I did run for 5 miles on the treadmill after coaching a split of girls basketball games last night.  It's always more turnovers than points.  Both daughters played hard and well, so that made me happy.

Outside again, this time with Jack in the stroller.  He's getting too big, but still liked coming.  We ran to the dead deer at the side of the road and back.  It is fairly well preserved in the snowbank just east of the tennis courts at smoot park.  Probably cleaned up by now.

So Monday I skiied with my son, egro, no running.  Tuesday my legs were so trashed, I skipped.  Wednesday I fell asleep at 8 o'clock, and never got to it.  Thursday my back was wigging out, and I was reminded of another reason why running is an imperative for me:  it keeps my spine from flaring up.  So it looks like 4 days is the maximum allowable interval between runs for back reasons, along with 36 hours as the optimal interval for mental health.

I like your scientific methods. I haven't quite figured out my necessary interval to preserve mental and physical health, but I know it's also less than 4 days. At present it's probably about 24-36 hours.

More on the treadmill, a bit faster than normal.  I finished 7 miles in just under 1 hour.  After that, another hour of up and down basketball with the old guys.  Wait, I'm the old guy; 20 years older than some of those punks.

Despite being 7 miles in, I outran all of the non-junior college players.

It's been a rough week.  I've had influenza, so not eating much and sleeping 14-18 hrs every day.  Starting to mend, still tired and headachey.  Being sick isn't too fun, but it's been nice to be home with the boys.  I'm glad I don't have a marathon training schedule to fret over.

I don't remember which shoes I wore.  I had a piece of toast at 6 am.  I ran over to the park, paid my $12, pinned my number on and went out for a bit more warming up.  Today would be an informative fitness test.

I nearly ditched the race, but couldn't think of a good enough excuse for breaking a streak of 8 years in a row.  Low tech in the extreme, with manual timing including stickers, bib stubs, and coat hangers to keep the finishing order straight, this little race brings the community together.

Pow.  The mayor fired the starting pistol.  Off we run, with lots of 10 year olds sprinting from the start, tripping over their feet while they gasp and wheeze.  After three quick right turns we start into a steady climb.  I didn't go out very fast, and I've no fitness to do anything besides keep pace.  I see Laura Gardner right ahead of me, and just like last year, I never catch her; never come close.

At one mile, there is usually a guy standing there yelling out splits.  I guess he overslept.  I don't have a watch, so I'm completely running by feel.  After another short rise, the course dips down for a while, and finishes flat.  At 1.5 miles, I feel good.  That nearly forgotten feeling of running pretty hard, and not dying, but actually feeling good, even slightly euphoric.  So despite my hot feet, dry mouth, and nearly irresistible yearning to run through the sprinklers, I stay on course and keep running.

With a mile to go, I catch one of my nephews.  "Keep going, Brandon."  With .5 miles to go, I catch his big brother.  "Is that you, Justin?"  "Go catch those red shirt guys.  Go! Go!"  I follow him in.  We both pick it up a bit; I see no reason to try to beat him.  Finish line.  Ahhh.  21:25.  7 minute pace.  I didn't know I had it in me, still.  Those are the first 7 minute miles I've run in a year.

Pass out 200+ bottles of water to the other finishers, then walk home to shower and zoom over to the parade start.  We ran out of candy to throw, and found another 5 gallon bucket of fruities when we got home.  Oops.  Just before we left, Brandon stoppped by with a $10 gift card to papa murphys and a red 2nd place ribbon for the old man.  Cool.  That brought the race cost down to $2.

Typical 10k nearly to farmington.  The night was cooler than expected.  Mosquito abatement was out killing, so there were lots of disabled dragonflies trilling their near lifeless wings on the sidewalks and road.  Still a few lingering fireworks displays.  I don't know how Utah concluded to make those aerial fireworks legal.  The other night, I watched one shoot across the street instead of up in the air.  It lit a bush on fire; luckily at that angle it was a bush, and not a recently restored home.

It has been a long time, Tara. My left knee has been bothersome for the past 3 months. I know of no acute injury, but it is stiff, sore and weak. I've been eating lots of ibuprofen, and in the last couple weeks it has settled down to uncomfortable, rather than painful. I'm only running 4-5 miles 3-4 times per week. I wish I could do more. Glad to hear your cracked knee is runable now.

From allie on Tue, Oct 04, 2016 at 16:05:12 from 24.99.46.55

Starting in June, my left knee started feeling stiff and swollen.  It was alternating between painful and uncomfortable.  Running didn't seem to hurt much, but it also didn't help.  I cut things back to give whatever is going on a chance to heal.  I am unaware of any injury; it just crept up on me over a period of months.  At it's worst, I'd abort runs after a 1/4 mile and walk home.

Currently it feels a bit uncomfortable for the first mile or so, but then it seems to warm up and feel fine by the end of a brief run.  The next morning it's more stiff, but not too bad.  It's affecting my running gait, and my right lower back gets sore when I run.  I don't have confidence in the knee.  I get up from the floor and out of a car like a man 20 years my senior.

Since I can't recall an injury, I'm not bothering with the doc yet.  "Rest, Ice, Ibuprophen, strengthen your core and quads."  Got it, Doc.  I hope it's fine to ski on all winter, since I already bought a season pass...

Well I'll be, a Kam sighting. Don't know how I missed this! Sorry to hear about the knee, didn't realize it was bothering you so much. Hope you can figure it out soon, as ski season is very important. We just started skiing a few years ago in my family and I snowboarded a few times and felt uncomfortable every time while my kids zoomed down the mountain. This year I bought skis when Sports Authority went out of business and I'm looking forward to gliding downhill like I did in my teens. No season pass, but I suspect we'll be at the mountain a fair bit.

Cool night runnings, and I didn't even have to wait till 10 or 11 for it to get dark.  Jack really wanted me to come cuddle with him, but I went for a run instead.

4 on the treadmill while the giants punked the mets in the top of the 9th.  Giants + postseason win = loathing and disgust

5 with stroller, 5 yr old and 17 yr old on bikes.  We stopped at 2 parks, and endured crying when it was time to leave.  My left knee is feeling less uncomfortable.  Strangely, I feel optimistic.

Awesome, optimism is a great start. And you really should stop crying when leaving parks, it's unbecoming of you.

Yah, we had to leave to be in time for showers and church.

This is the third day I've spent an hour plus on the blog. Maybe getting sucked in again....

I try to limit my public outbursts, but this park has a zipline feature. That's awfully hard to leave behind.

LOL! Yeah, those zip lines suck you in just like the blog. Wow, you've spent 3 days in a row on FRB? That's great news. The posts have really started dwindling from the regulars the past 12 months.

6 around town after dark.  And before dark playing monster on the playground with the boys while the mosquitos feasted.  Zika, anyone?

Knee feels okay this morning

Warm fall night.  In the park a lonely person sat motionless on the swing.

Cold water in the fountains, just for a few more days.

Left knee still sore.  It bothers me coming down stairs, climbing up from the floor or getting out of the car, and when Gabriel jumps off the day bed and lands on it.
