| Day off surrounded by sick kids. I waited till the temperature peaked, and left for an open ended run. I felt pretty good, running the first 2 miles around 7 min. pace. Then I walked enough to make an 8 min 3rd mile. The following 5 miles were 6:45-7:00 pace, including some good climbs. I guess I was thinking about marathon training too much and got a bit carried away. I was talking with my wife last night about the race, and going big. I could go two ways on it; higher mileage or more speed stuff. I watched pretty closely the results Christi got with lower volume/high intensity training, and that seems to fit my schedule better. But I'm a wuss, and don't always want to work that hard. She's got game, too. I don't know if I have enough heart to show up and gut it out like that. In any case, I've got to go beyond what I did for TOU. I have a solid base, I'm healthy, and not burned out at this time. |

Biggest Loser progression run. I started at 6.8 mph. Every commercial break I added .2 mph. Last couple miles were 7 min pace. I've given up the battle with my incline motor. I'm better at cutting pieces of wood and propping up the front or back end than I am at making the actual repair. I guess when I want some hills, I'll go outside. My son told me the gym was wall-to-wall today, and I'm lucky to have my own treadmill. He's right, even though it is a noisy POS. Oh yeah. For my birthday a few weeks ago, my mom gave me a trip to the running lab. That's Thursday morning. I'll be interested in what they have to say/suggest. When I started running in 2008 the shoe store guy put me in a big clunky motion control shoe. I'm a firm believer in the adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" so I've kept with the Saucony Omni series. But, having run 400 miles in crocs in the last 4 months without injury, I'd say the need for such a shoe is past. That said, I think I'd do well to find something in between. My feet get sore from the little perforations on the crocs on runs over 8 miles, and I do think some impact absorption is a good shoe function. But I think I can get away with a much lighter shoe without so much molded crap added to the heels and sides. |

| Running lab morning. I hadn't seen that side of 6 a.m. on purpose in quite a long time. I had a piece of toast, and got there by 6:15. There were three stations; an agility/flexibility/core station with a physical therapist, lactate threshold with a tech and gait analysis with a tech and doc. The agility/flexibility/core was helpful, and highlighted tightness in my shoulders, hamstrings and deep calfs. Everything else was good. The lactate threshold consisted of progression running on the treadmill. After running at 6.5 mph for 3 minutes, she measured heartrate and lactic acid level in the blood thru a pinprick in the earlobe. The stick took 10-20 seconds, then speed up .5 mph, and continue until the lactic acid level really starts to climb. At 8 mph she said, "Probably a couple more." At 8.5 mph, she said, "Probably a couple more." At 9 mph she said, "Probably 2 or 3 more." At 9.5 mph she said, "You know, in fit people, the climb isn't as sudden..." At 10 mph I was getting pretty tired. At 10.5 mph, ran for a couple minutes and told her "I don't have another 40 seconds of this. I'm gonna puke." Her response was to encourage me to finish. I finished, and stayed just on the right side of the puke line. I overheard the doc getting after her as I went to the bathroom. "You aren't supposed to run them till they throw up!" Finally, the gait analysis. They had me run barefoot for a while with front, side and rear cameras. They let me run in my regular shoes and crocs. This was much shorter and easier than the lactate threshold. At least I had a good warmup. Overall, I was working with them for 90 minutes. They said it would take them a few days to compile all the results into a report, so I'm still waiting for that. Until I take a look at that, or talk with the doctor again, I won't be sure how useful the trip was. The only immediate feedback I got was from the PT about having a good core and some stretching advice. I felt sick all day after doing that speed work. Also, I was unable to resist showing off the difficult core pushups for my wife, (hands shoulder wide at the level of your forehead) and I feel like I tore something in my abs. It's better today, but it hurt all day yesterday. |

After shoveling driveways for 4 hours in the morning, I was feeling a bit tired. The only reason this run happened is cuz I got on the blog and read about Andy and Melody's workouts. They are both Boston-bound, and better runners than me, so I couldn't let them gap me in training... So the slugfest lasted just over 2 hrs. Very uninspired pace, but it was all my bag of bones could muster. |

I'm not really sure how the miles work out, but it's close. I warmed up for a mile, then did 2 min @ 6:40 followed by 2 min @ 8:30, repeated enough times to get 8.4 miles. I liked this workout. It didn't kill me, but gave me some time at faster speeds. Overall time was 64 minutes. I still need to buy some new shoes, and if this keeps up, a gym membership or replacement treadmill. Squeak, rattle, bang. Anybody interested in a long run on Saturday in Davis County? I don't want to drive to SLC and make a time consuming commitment take even longer... |

| Biggest Loser progression run lite. I started at 7 mph and finished at 7.8 mph. Overall pace 7:50. I hope Mike gets things sorted out. I liked the challenge, and can't believe how stupid the girls played the bet. I don't like how they are playing up this Bob/Dolvett rivalry. So Boston trip planning is getting me excited. This year we are flying into Buffalo to check out Niagara Falls, Palmyra and Cooperstown before heading into MASS. My 16 and 14 year old are coming, maybe my 12 year old. It's going to be a great trip... |

| My car was out of gas at city hall, so before work I jogged over there with a gas can--0.5 miles. After work, 8 slow, gruesome treadmill miles. My pre-run fajitas, while tasty, didn't make a great contribution to this effort. Nevertheless, I got the time in. I suppose at least half the marathon will feel like that gut-bomb, so it was good practice. Unfortunately, the pace languished around 8:20. |

I met up with Andy and Tara for the long run. We took LPT to State Street Farmington, then home on Main. It was 19 degrees when I left; 2 shirts and a jacket were sufficient, although it took my hands two miles to overcome the numbness. The miles sure go by quicker when you have some company! We scared all the ducks overnighting in non-frozen water, and the sunrise was quite pretty. I feel okay after this run, and very hungry. The long runs seem to target my hips, upper quads and core That was my longest run since TOU. So next Sat, we are going to do a "little big" workout. 14 miles, with 8 slow, then 2 miles at 6:45ish, 1 mile recovery x2. It's going to be a lot of fun, so don't forget to sign up early.

Alien Resurrection; a stinkfest. My rt knee has been sore in the aftermath of Saturday's long run, like a bruise underneath the cap. It doesn't hurt to touch or move the cap around, but it stiffens when I sit for a while. I started running tonight and I could feel the soreness, but it wasn't anything much, so I stuck with the plan. 2 mile warmup, 6 @ 7:30, 1 cooldown. My knee feels fine now; I iced it for 15 seconds when I went to get something out of the garage. It's really cold in there. Legit snow today, very light and powdery. Since the boys were off school, I left it to them, and went to real work. I love when that happens. I heard a good song today: Sweet Sour. "Sour by the minute, but you're sweeter by the hour." I think the artist is talking about running. The sour is the lactic acid buildup when you are running hard and fast. The sweetness is, well, it's an hour+ run with all the endorphins. Correct me if I'm wrong.

| New shoes! Kinvaras arrived; not the fancy 3's allie is wear testing, just some outdated 2's. To celebrate, I repeated the Biggest Loser Progression run. I commenced at 7 mph and bumped .2 for each commercial break. By the end I was pretty tired, and skipped one bump during the elimination phase. (that sounds really gross) Max speed was 8.6, then cooled down for a couple minutes at 7. I can't believe how dumb the red team is to send home one of their strongest players. Don't they want to win any challenges and prizes? My knee is sketchy, but it doesn't bother me much. Just enough to pitch little nagging thoughts in my brain. My shoe review is: they are shoes. They look cool. They feel fine. The left shoe seems to have a bulge on the medial left arch that is absent on the right. Perhaps my foot is deformed, beyond the Morton's toe, I mean. One 10 mile run is a pretty good test run with no problems to report. |

| New shoes. I really like the mirage, maybe even better than the kinvaras. My son had a b-ball game. I wore my tights under my pants, so after they emerged victorious, I ran on home. It was after 10, so nice, dark and quiet. I had to make a pit stop at the rec center, however, and cutting across the grass was a dumb idea, since it was like running over a soaked sponge. I enjoy running in the middle of the street, and I encountered only 10 or so cars. A few observations; bbq beef isn't a great pre-run meal. Also, after logging many treadmill miles, my stabilizer muscles and kinetic visual awareness are not so great. I watch tv, and don't pay attention to the belt. But running over uneven, wet, icy pavement with curb cuts, sidewalks, and slopes is very different, especially in the dark. Having largely forsaken my prior habits of outdoor nighttime ramblings, I was reminded of a few pleasures of being outside late at night, including waving at cops and wildlife sightings. I was startled by 4 deer right by the post office. I guess they had mail to drop off. A good run. No garmin, no iPod. Just my breathing, slapping and a headwind. |

| Nice run with a large contingent. The weather was spotty for parts of the run, but we enjoyed nice conditions for 7 miles. We headed into the wind so we could enjoy tailwind benefits for the faster miles. I took up a strategic position in the rear, enjoying the drafting. In reality, I just can't run fast enough to be up front. The linkup between LPT and JRP is complete now. We turned around somewhere on the golf course. The the first 2 tempo miles were un-flat, the last 2 were mostly flat. The rain was really coming down, conjuring good memories of TOU 2011. Splits for the faster miles were 6:50, 6:42, 6:42 and 6:30. Afterward, we went to my house for waffles with Jake, Andrea, Tara and Emily. Everyone else had chores and kids... Like on day of the running lab, I spent the day sick to my stomach. I don't think the waffles were poisoned; I'm just not responding well to higher intensity, yet. Rt knee is bugging, but fine with motrin. I guess I'm in the groove and popping pills. As always, it's fun to put faces with names. The group dynamic was good, and I really got pulled along. I would be hard pressed to work that hard on my own. I'm sure I could have hit those splits, but the warmup would have been much more gentle, and the recovery miles much slower. |

| I tried out my sick and sore knee. I've been a little sick several times over the last 3 years, and I've never felt worse for running. Any thoughts on running while under the weather? Does it hinder a quick recovery, or merely provide an excuse for skipping a workout? How much running is too much running when ill? The irony is the Saturday workout in the rain is likely what pushed me over the edge of wellness... Catch-22 |

| Illness day from regular work, but I still had to shovel many driveways. Afterward, the afternoon was so clear and enticing, I put on my shoes and gaiters to see if I could make first tracks on BST. Mission accomplished. The views, conditions, and experience were all top-notch. I'm SOOO glad I went. However, I underestimated the effort level required to run in the 8-12" of snow. This run, while worthwhile, completely wiped me out. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. |

Slow treadmill miles. Consistency narrowly defeated rest/recovery. By the time I ran 4 miles, I felt pretty good; I could have run 8-10, but figured that would be over the edge. I got off, ate some cooca puffs and ice cream (separately, but reused the bowl) and went to sleep. I watched biggest loser. Horrible. Too bad they couldn't find some real contestants this year, and that Bob acts like a teeny tiny baby when he loses.

| After logging 9 weeks in 2 years with mileage over 50, I have 50+ in six of the last eight. Boston is 11 weeks away, and I still don't have a training plan I am following, other than running 5-6 days a week, and long on the weekend. I really should rectify this, but I'm enjoying the "disciplined flexibility" of running almost every day, and having freedom to go hard or easy, hill or flat, trails or treadmill. My wife says all I do is run. She's mostly right, and I appreciate her good sportsmanship. As far as coming up with a plan-- maybe I'll look on runners world. I would also appreciate any suggestions. | |

At the same time, I was glad when the episode ended and I could slow down. I'll add some time, and work up to 7-8 miles at that faster than marathon pace. I may have to find something else to watch. They keep voting off the positive people, and keep all the trash around. I could feel soreness in my ankle and knee by the end of the run. I kinda like doing these tempos- good for my confidence. | A repeat of yesterday, but in 8 fewer minutes. I feel a lot better. I finally printed out a marathon training plan. I think I'll just use the weekly number of miles and the speed/tempo workouts and forget about the rest. It's not much different than what I've been doing for 2 months. Peak mileage is 62, which is uncharted territory. The winter series begins tomorrow. I'll do another 9-10 tonight, take Friday off for a taper, and run a hilly 5k on Saturday. This week will be a planned step back week; I'll be under 50 miles on purpose, unless I decide to run quite a bit more after the race. My rt knee tendinitis seems to be resolved (knock on wood). The ache hasn't decided where to settle yet, but I'm predicting a hip pointer before the marathon. I'm giving some thought to improving my poor diet habits. I eat a lot of candy, and not many fruits and vegetables. How many minutes is that worth in a marathon? I wonder. Or could I be the guy that runs a sub-3 with crappy eating habits? |

You feel me? I glanced through an article about crossfit. The writer said all the "recovery" runs just keep you tired and un-recovered. Part of that tickles my ears, but it seems like there is a pretty tried and true formula for distance running success, and it doesn't necessarily involve kettle-bell swings and explosives bouts of intervals. Today is day 1 of my unpaid internship. |

Ah, Striders. I think what happened was this. A race director went to bed after a spicy meal and strenuous argument with his spouse. He awoke in the night with horrible indigestion and lingering bitterness over harsh words. In this state of mind, he brooded on a 5k course that mirrored his sour, resentment; thus the Striders 5k was born, complete with taxing uphills, too-steep descents, and an uphill finish to boot. In a final expression of anger, he staged the race in the dead of winter. But 400+ people show up for this thing. I forgot how fun it is to pull up and see all the runners at a race beginning. People pinning bibs and securing chips and stretching and pounding energy drinks and spitting and striding. There are only a handful of runners there with a lick of talent, but the rest of us grind out our miles and come tackle the course. The race started on time. The first half mile was okay; it's pretty flat. .5-1.5 is a steady climb. My pace drifted up over 8mm, breathing was very difficult. Running all winter on a treadmill with broken incline hasn't done my hill running any favors. I was very close to taking a brief walking break as I neared the top of this hill, but it would be to embarrassing, so I kept running. The downhill was a nice respite, but way too short and steep. Minutes later the climbing resumed. I must have gone out too fast, as I got passed 4-5 times in the last .75. I nearly walked again (so weak in the brain) but I looked over my shoulder and saw that 5 people would have passed me so I kept going. When we entered the parking lot the 1st place girl passed me, but long legs on the uphill finish prevailed. I came in at 20:30, a 1 minute improvement from last year. I'm very excited about that. My one day taper really did the trick. That's a 5% improvement from last year. If I apply that to my most recent marathon, that's 10 minutes...Encouraging.

| I am missing a shoe. I have a dozen pair of shoes lying about; some my son took to mow lawns in, some I mow lawns in, 4 pair are currently rotating and running, but one of those 8 shoes is missing. I really want to squeeze another 100 miles out of that pair... 8 miles, 67 minutes. 2 warmup, then three in the middle at 7:30 pace. It didn't feel great. This treadmill festival of running wasn't the greatest. Having to stop in the middle to serve/eat dinner didn't help much. The last three after beans, homemade french bread and meatballs were somewhat pedestrian. Maybe tonight's Biggest Loser run will go better. Since we already got all the romance of V-day out of the way last night by going to the tax prep lady, tonight I'll run through BL while my wife watches upstairs. 16 miler on Saturday...I hope Firebreak Road will be dry enough to do some on the hillside. If I was wearing $120 cvx tights on Saturday I'm sure I wouldn't have been chipped by .7 seconds by the 1st place female, and that I could have made up the 7 seconds between 3rd and 1st place in my age division. ha ha ha |

Biggest Loser progression run, Valentines edition. I put red hearts, white lacy and pink cupids all over the treadmill. After grandma went home, I got the girls back to bed and fired up the machine. I started at 7 mph and added .3 mph at every commercial break. Top speed was a meager 8.8. I hit my planned mileage with quite a bit of show left, so cooled down for a mile. It's crazy how much better today felt than yesterday. My legs were definitely a bit beat up from the steep downhills on Saturday. 61 minutes For Valentines, I got a special present from my wife; 2 glass 9x13 pans. Obviously, I've still got it. Nothing says I love you quite like kitchen-ware.

| 7 more, 57 minutes. After running, I did some planking and such. Later, I checked my physique in the mirror and couldn't see any difference. How disappointing. I've been pondering a philosophical question. If I run and don't enter it into this blog, did it really happen? I will be home from work tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to a mid-day, high-sun trail run. That should get me nice and tired for a longish, little big workout on Saturday. Tonight, however, will be the treadmill as usual. |

| On the treadmill again. I watched the mentalist for the first, and likely only time. What a dumb show. When I got done, my wife said, "Wow, that was fast." What she didn't know is that I did less miles than usual. Afterward, I did some more planking and such. My daughter joined me. She's a dancer with great balance and core strength. After that, I got looking at my r2 toe. The nail has never really been normal since I lost it a couple years ago. It grows in 2-3 removable layers. I decided a fresh start would be good, and just ripped it all out. It only hurt a little bit. Out with the old and in with the new. |

| Morning run outside. We had a big lunch meeting at work, so I had to finish in time for that. I announced "Mandatory Family Run" and got 3 of the bigger kids to run 1 mile. The little girls rode their bikes. The sun wasn't exactly shining, and the day wasn't exactly warm, but it was nice to be outside. My 12 year old runs like a duck. My 16 year old goes too fast and makes herself very uncomfortable. I didn't get to observe my 14 year old. My 17 year old refused to participate. Tomorrow is a 16-18 miler, little big workout. I'm planning on 4 zig-zags after 10-11 miles. These are .5 mile ascents up the switchback trail at Freedom Hills park. Tara and Andy can attest that it's a rugged 800 meters. The unpaid internship continues. Fingers crossed. I'm too old for a job like this. |

I met up with Andy. We looped from my house to LPT, east on Farmington State Street to Freedom Hills. I had quick drink, and we tackled the switchbacks 4x. It was tough; 270' of climb in .5 miles. The final 3 miles were considerably more challenging than usual. Total climb for the run was 2800'. I may have crossed the line between fitness deposit into withdrawal territory today. It was a good thing to have Andy along; sharing the mental fatigue makes a huge difference. Total time was 2:24, we did 8 minute pace on the flat stuff, much slower on the switchbacks. In hindsight, I wish I wore my heartrate monitor. Other than the workout, it was a perfect morning; cold, but not too cold, with sunshine and blue skies.

| Another week begins with a 7 mile run, very slow. Rt. calf is locked up from Saturday, rt. knee tendonitis as well. I don't regard either of these as very serious, just noting them in case they don't go away. I really should go after the calf with a tennis ball, but I resist for some reason. So the series 10k is Saturday in Ogden, and I need to have a total run of 18. On a scale of 1-10, how important is it that the 18 miles be run continuously? As a part of the marvelous holiday, I took the girls to the CROWDED rec center. It's an okay place to visit, but I'm glad I don't live there. |

Biggest Loser progression run. I was lazy and increased in .2 mph increments. I made it to 7:11 pace by the end, so that was okay. The only bad thing was getting such a late start; we were busy with kid commitments till 9:30. It's hard to wind down and get to sleep after a run; luckily my son was working on scholarship applications and definitely needed some help and input. It's a good thing for the last minute, or nothing would get done. Oh yeah, post-run I did some planks and such.

New crocs for $10 at a podiatrist office. It is nice to have them back. Other than that, this run was pretty blah. Afterward, I was sneaking a chocolate shake around so I didn't have to make 6 more and run out of ice cream. I was stunned at the temperature, and felt very sheepish that the run took place inside instead of out in the warm wind. Oh yeah, a couple more planks. 2:30 and 2:00 after the run. I perspired more in the 2.5 minute plank than in the 57 minute run.

One of the neighbor boys suddenly decided to work on an Eagle project, so I have to push the long run to Sunday. I'll still be racing, but racing only. This isn't my preference, but it'll have to do this week. I'm already dreading the 18 miler the day after a hard 10k. Oh well. If I don't beat myself up too much, it should be helpful. |

| I fell asleep last night around 9:30, so it wasn't surprising when I started waking up in the 4's. My alarm was set for 6:30, so I stayed in bed sleeping off and on until then. Only one nightmare visitor to crowd the bed. I had a single bowl of oatmeal. Spencer and I got to the race in time for a brief warmup. I thought I'd like more than a little, since it's been taking me 4-5 miles to feel like I'm going lately. I got almost 2. I saw Tara just before the start; she had a killer's eye. She asked me my goal, which was modest; stay under a 7 minute pace. The siren sounded, and we were off. Immediately I rebelled against the pace. People were passing me left and right while I faded in mile 1. Oh well. I needed some hard tempo miles for this week, and I was going to get them. After an initial hill, the first 1/2 of this race is downhill or flat. At the turnaround I was at 20:20, and the fun was over. We were headwinding all the way back, and had to climb back up the hills we dashed down. I passed 7 or 8 people in the second half, including a brief walk after the steepest up. (I can't believe I walked. I felt like I broke the code. Someone needs to revoke my runner card) My breathing was horrible. I had been following a lady the whole race, and thought, "I might catch her. She's got to be feeling about as lousy as me." We arrived at the final downhill, and I couldn't close on her, but when we turned into the parking lot, I found a little more, and caught up. She probably chipped me anyway, but this is a series, so all the seconds count. After the 5k, I'm 8 seconds out of first place for my age; I hope I made up some time. Splits: 6:45, 6:18, 6:41, 7:00, 7:45, 7:14. .2 was around 45 seconds. Spencer came in under 48, which was great. I had to rush home to help with an Eagle project, so no cooldown. 18 miles tomorrow. Dread. This was 2 minutes faster than last year, another good harbinger. (this may be the only time "harbinger" appears on the blog) |

After my regular job, some snow customers called, so I spent an hour+ on core and upper body, and actually earned some $$$ for the day. As for the run, 8 miles, peak pace was 8.2 mph, 62 minutes, felt pretty good. A lot of these "easy" miles I'm doing are at last year's marathon pace, so that's encouraging. Finally, a decent episode of Biggest Loser. 18 days off the ranch seemed to help the contestants and producers find their humanity. |

I made it home in time to run on a beautiful afternoon as the sun was setting. I wasn't sneaky enough to leave the house without three little ones in tow; 2 on bikes, 1 in the stroller. We slowly made our way over to the dinosaur park they like (2 miles). I dropped them off at the play equipment and ran laps with Jack. The first one I noticed a strong south wind, and knew it was going to take forever to get home. I ran 3.5 at the park, then collected the girls, and herded cats home into the wind. They whined. They complained. They were tired. We made 12 minute miles. It was getting dark fast, and we didn't have any evening gear to enhance visibility, so each street crossing was nerve-wracking. Jack sat silent and motionless in the stroller until the last mile, when he started shaking his bowling-ball head "NO" back and forth. My rt knee felt a bit sore, tendinitis kind of sore. Or maybe it's the shoes? I feel about 85% recovered from this cold. The extra sleep has been nice; I need to get to bed earlier. I'm loving the daylight in the morning, for just a few more days before it all gets tacked on to the end of the day.

I'm vexed by the sore rt knee. I'll have to consume some vitamin I today. On a separate topic, I think it's pretty dumb that spelling the letters out counts as words in scrabble. 8 more on the treadmill. The day after a harder effort is never very good, and tonight was no exception. But I completed the run. Mentally, my training is lagging a bit... "Race" on Saturday. I say "race" because I need to just incorporate that into my 20 miler. I plan to arrive early enough to do a 5 mile warmup, then the race with a 5 mile add-on afterward. Last year I bumped along for 7:23 pace. I guess my goal will be to beat that, maybe keep it to sub-7 pace for the 10 miles. With all the hills, and before & after miles, that'll be ambitious.

Today's race served a two-fold purpose; a race and training run. The upcoming marathon is much more important than the winter series, but I still limp away feeling like a chump for giving up a lot of time this morning. Spencer graciously consented to hang out in the parking lot for an hour so I could get some miles in pre-race. I started around 7:10, planning to do 5 before and 5 after. I got "misdirected" on my out and back warmup, and ended up with 6 before, and came within 30 seconds of missing the start. Also, there is nowhere flat to run around Weber State. The warmup, "easy" miles were more taxing than necessary, esp. since I was pushing to get back in time for the start. (It was chip timed...why do I care when I cross the mat?) The course mirrors the 10k, which is reasonable until mile 4, which commences a hellacious 1.5 mile climb, then some downhill and rollers till 6.5, then another steady 1.5 mile climb, followed by a nice 1.5 mile coast downhill, then final steep section at mile 9.25. I held on pretty well until the steep at mile 5, (which was mile 11 for me) and walked a bit. Once the dam started to leak, I didn't keep my finger in the hole, and made a pretty good living of walking up portions of a lot of the hills. It was 20 seconds at a time, but WAY too many times. I found myself in the no mans land between the good runners and the pretty good runners, though, so I wasn't losing placing. But it's a series, and I lost around 5 minutes. Needless to say, I didn't turn in a great time; a minute slower than last year. I blame that on a variety of factors; I was running miles 7-16, not 1-10, I needed some immodium, and had extra miles to do afterward, so rationalizations and excuses were plentiful. But the one I can take responsibility for is that I was a wuss and walked too much. So anyway, after the finish, Tara, who beat me by 5 minutes on a bum ankle came with me for the final 4. We were pretty slow, barely eking out 10 minute miles on winding BST and Mt. Ogden Golf Course. Did I mention there is nowhere flat to run? That sure didn't help. The main take-home from today is I HAVE GOT TO WORK OUT A FUELING STRATEGY. Oh yeah, and toughen up the old brain. After a Frosty at Wendy's and a very frosty ice-bath (15 minutes) followed by a 20 minute hot shower, I feel okay. My legs are pretty tired, and I want to puke, but other than that, it's a typical Saturday in March.

Also, at work I threw down a 6 minute plank. That's right, 6 continuous minutes, a new PR. | I didn't get home till after 10, and still needed to run. I hopped on for an easy 10k. I know I'm in full marathon mode when all the runs feel lousy until mile 4 or 5. When things finally started to click, my time was up. I went upstairs and found that everyone had gone to bed...I could have put in more miles after all. I was so late getting home because of an informational meeting on refinery expansion. Currently 2 of the 5 refineries in Salt Lake and Bountiful are considering expansion. They haven't applied for permits, but the writing is on the wall. This is a horrifying possibility in terms of air quality. Some of you may have gathered that this is a pet issue, but after 2+ hours of listening to specialty physicians describe the effects of PM 2.5 and aromatic hydrocarbon pollution on vessels and arteries everywhere in your body; heart, lungs, brains, eyes, developing infants, placentas, etc... Well, needless to say, there are ample reasons this is my pet issue. I've even given serious thought to moving away. Bottom line, There isn't a soul along the Wasatch Front that isn't being poisoned by these industrial pollutants. Every time there is reduction in air quality, there are both chronic and acute health problems noted by doctors. It makes me sick to think about all the workouts I've completed while breathing in this gunk, not to mention all the other breaths, all day every day. Check out this link for current action items, including refinery expansion and Rio Tinto expansion. Your health can't take any more of this!!! http://www.uphe.org/priority-issues/air-quality |

Long run with Tara and Andy. Last time we ran together it was 35 degrees cooler. Tara tried to kill us by adding in some hills. At one point she remarked, "You'll thank me for this later." It was currently taking much self restraint to not punch her in the face, but she's probably right. When we dropped her at her house, we had done 4 uphill miles out of 12. That left Andy and I with 8 to go, pretty much already trashed. We gu'ed up, and headed to the edge of Farmington and back to my house, with a detour for me to change shoes. Andy drove me to the brink of collapse, but we finished. I don't know which hat I'm going to pull another 10k out of. (sentence ending in a preposition) It seems a bit much to ask of taper magic, sea-level bump and race day adrenaline. As I spent the last hour of the run gamely trying not to puke it occurred to me over and over and over again that this really isn't necessary. Just because one time I wrote down sub-3 marathon as a goal doesn't mean I am strictly required to spend all this time, effort and money in pursuit. "Controlled and strong" got me through 3-4 miles at the end. It's funny the lies we tell ourselves to try to drown out the ugly truths that flow so easily from the subconscious mind at the end of a sustained effort. Obviously, it's getting near the end of a marathon cycle. After picking up my car, I went to my Dad's and changed out 5 exterior light fixtures. 3 hours after the run, I feel all right (Thanks, Rumbi Island Grill and 3 cans of Dew). I'm looking at my 57.4 miles per week and thinking about getting in 2.6 more tonight. Sick, sick, sick. I may never take a stab at 60 in a week again. p.m. 3.2 miles at sunset with Jens to finish off the week, very slow.

After two nights of bumping along, it felt great to get on top of things, and run a little harder/sweatier. 3 older kids joined me for "24" viewing. Several head-shots later, I wish they hadn't. I tried Jake's mtn dew concoction, minus the electrolyte plus the fizz. It tasted great, and was my first dew since Sunday. I didn't have any fancy bottles though, just an ugly, restaurant-grade tumbler from Bintz. So far, they have proven indestructible, but the kids have still lost a few of them. I'm soliciting recommendations for books that are set in or about New England. I'm set with John Adams, but I need some stuff for the younger readers (13-18). | 2 miles warmup, then 8 @ 8 mph. For some reason, 8 mph seems faster than 7:30 pace even though they are the same. I think it's the higher digit. Strangely, 9 mph doesn't seem faster than 6:45 pace. I'm not as familiar with these numbers as I should be, what, with my aspirations. I guess they were more wishful thinking this time around. Still, it's been a good training cycle. I'm going to wonder what to do with my hard-earned 50 mpw habit when there's no marathon on the horizon. Honestly, it's getting time for the pendulum to swing back. If I was going to write a poem on my blog, it probably wouldn't rhyme. There might be punctuation issues, meter would be absent, and like as not it would be ironic, in a half-smile, half-frown kind of way. I wish Bam was still making entries about leprehcauns. How do you spell that word anyway? |

She came 2.5 weeks early, although the midwife had her arrival pegged. Jack seems huge by comparison. After holding baby girl for 20 minutes and eating a huge bakery chocolate chip cookie, I came home. It's so tempting to go all out when you only have to run five; no need to save anything for 7-10. |

Warmup, then 3x1 @ 6:30 pace with .5 miles in between. It was sweaty. That's a pretty hard effort, and I didn't notice much sea level bump. Good to know. Other than a couple 4 milers, that's the end. I'm blogging this run on Friday morning before we head to the baseball hall of fame. 3 days more... |

4 miles on a tm in Auburn, MA. We drove in from Cooperstown, after a full day at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Awesome. I'm not very happy to see a forecast high of 86 for Monday. Oh well. I can't worry about things out of my control. Water stops are every mile so it shouldn't be a problem, right? Plus with all the community support, people passing out oranges and popsicles, this should be a breeze. A breeze...would that be too much to hope for? |

After an eventful week of sight-seeing, it was finally time to get to work. I've been watching the weather with consternation for a week; there was no relief when I checked it yesterday. Resolved to the hot conditions, I decided to dial things back at the start and set my A goal to finish safely. My dad dropped me and my Mom off at Hopkinton, and we caught the bus up to the start. At 9:30 they were announcing temps of 80. We didn't go to the athlete village, since we didn't have any extra clothes to drop. Andy dropped back 4 corrals and met me in #7. 5 minutes after the elites left, we passed the start line. Whatever it takes, participating in a Boston Marathon is worth the sacrifice. Running is generally a pretty lonely pursuit, lacking in glamour, but at Boston, you are a ROCKSTAR!!! This year I didn't even wear an iPod, after learning last year you can't hear your own music over the yelling of the spectators. Scattered over the entire course, there's less than a mile of solitary running without legions of screaming spectators, kids gingerly holding out their hands for high-fives, passing out oranges, water, otter pops, ice, wet towels, sponges, etc. 5k: 22:50 Andy and I ran together, easy, holding back. I was very confused by the 1km marker; I didn't notice the km part and wondered how the course markers could be off by that much. These miles were pretty effortless. 10k: 23:01 More of the same. At mile 5 I had a curry flavored orange. It was pretty gross. Andy and I stayed together. It's pretty hot. I look at Andy's soaked shirt, and realize I look the same. I am dumping 2 cups of water on my head every mile, and taking on extra water wherever possible at impromptu water stops. (thanks, little kids) 15k: 22:59 At this point, I'm past the 6 mile warmup point, and feeling pretty good. The sea level running is very nice. At mile 7 I lost Andy at a water stop. I thought he went ahead, so I tried to pick things up a little bit to catch him. I never saw him again. 20k: 23:15 Things are holding up nicely, but I'm not even halfway done. I dug into my new utility belt (just like Batman, but with less compartments) and ate some Smarties. Yum. I've been pounding oranges, and taking otter pops as well. I am not feeling waterlogged, and have no struggles with gu-gut, because I'm not eating any gu. Half: 1:37:02 This is just a number. 25k: 24:10 A bit of slowing, but I'm passing people fairly regularly. The heat is taking it's toll, with more and more people walking. I'm locked in with a guy from Canada, hearing lots of shouts "Go, Canada!" The scream wall at Wellesley was awesome. I didn't kiss a single girl. In this leg, I spotted Andrea. She gave me a great boost when I really needed something. Thanks! 30k: 24:40 A bit more slowing. The hills are looming, and did I mention it's pretty hot? It's getting late enough to start counting down miles. Under 10...9.... 35k: 26:31 Ugh. I slowed to down a 5 hour energy, and walked some. The crowd is fantastic, and it's demoralizing how many people are passing me when I'm walking, so I run some more. I'm not going to stop any more. 40k: 24:25 I guess the caffeine kicked in, or I was able to make something of the downhills. I'm stunned to see 6's on my garmin when I look down once in a while. My quads are crampy, and my hands are tingling. I'm skipping drinks, but still dumping water over my head. The fire hydrants, hoses, and water from spectators are cold while the water stops are lukewarm. The crowd noise and encouragement are a huge boost. It hurts more to walk than run, so I run. It's pretty hot. 42.16k: 10:25 On to the finish. I cross the line at 3:22:13. I'm dizzy, my hands are numb. I like to lay down after a race, but they tell me to keep walking. People are staggering all over the place. I get caught up in that, and go to the med-tent. The best thing about it is being out of the sun, and getting some gatorade without disgusting protein. My quads are really jacked up, but I feel fine considering. My kids spot me, and we wait for a couple hours for my Mom to finish. She made it under 5 hours, taking 10th in her age group. It was a tough, tough day. I slowed, but that's okay. I found a groove again after losing a groove, which is encouraging. I moved up 4400 places from my seed, which is better than last year. Tonight I'm not too beat up. No blisters, a tiny bit of sunburn, tired legs, but nothing a few days off won't solve. Maybe I can make a run at 3 hrs @ UVM.

| I took the three little ones for a shakeout. The stroller and 2 bikes tend to enforce going slow. We went to the Ricks creek waterfall, then the girls wanted to play at the park. Jack was asleep by then, so I sat on the bench and watched them for a while. Before coming back, Anna walked into the unlocked bathroom to take care of business. She saw it was a robot toilet and decided she could wait till she got home. It's funny how kids hate auto-flush. She also complained it smelled like dead bugs in there. I thought it smelled like poop, but that's just me. I know the run was helpful to me mentally. I'm not sure about physical benefits. My rt ankle really tightened up since, and it wasn't bothering me before. My legs feel pretty normal, but the left calf is still a bit tight. I might have to pay for a massage. Boston was fantastic. I'm so pleased with how the trip went. The kids all claim they had a great time; I know I did. Of course it would be nice to have run a faster marathon, but given the conditions, I'm satisfied with that outcome as well. |

a.m. 10k Jack woke up at 6. Tami said he woke her at 2. That made it my turn. When I got him out of his crib, lo and behold Ashlei was sitting on the couch playing a draw game on the iPad. I had some oatmeal, fed Jack and bribed Ash to join us on a run with a donut. We went to Farmington and back, stopping at Fresh Market for her donut. Jack fell asleep before the turnaround. Temps were perfect. p.m. 6m Just after sunset, Tami and I ran on BST almost to Ricks Creek, before coming down Oakridge. We ran into a night running woman who was happy to join us; it was pretty dark and she was pretty nervous. (She spoke of a 3:18 marathon at Desnews. I'll have to get her on the blog.) We ran her home, then dropped Tami home and ran the uphill mile to pick up the car. It was a bit warm. I need to talk her into running in the morning. Congrats to everyone who ran SL marathon events today. Bloggers made some cash, baby. I was thinking about mile 24 of the marathon today. At that stage, I was feeling pretty done; my quads were really tight, my hands numb and my head was getting a bit dizzy. Just on this side of walking, I noticed a guy ahead with Phillipians 4:13 on the back of his singlet. That verse is pretty popular with several fellow bloggers. I read it, and ran the rest of the way in. This is the only marathon with no walking spikes on my pace graph after mile 23. "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."

| BST to Freedom Hills. I ran pretty hard the whole time. I left a bit too late for the light remaining, and got off the trails just before visibility was very sketchy. It's hard to comprehend these temperatures in April. Last night it didn't even drop below 70. Who traded April for July? I spent the whole run thinking about transcending pain. I don't spend enough time in pain to learn how to compartmentalize it, or embrace it and run along with it. I think good runners are able to shut it out or work with it somehow, like a woman in labor. At Boston, I spent a mile behind a guy with a tank that said "Trained on speed and LSD." I'm embarrassed that it took me around 10 minutes to figure out what it meant. I need a shirt that says "Smack me hard if I'm walking." I looked at my garmin for the first time, and my race report isn't strictly accurate, it appears. The lowlight includes a 9:42 mile. I should have checked it out sooner when correlating stages and places were fresh in my mind. A week later, the entire marathon is just a sweaty, pleasant smear in my mind. |

| After dropping the van off for some work, I unloaded the stroller and Jack and we went for our longest run ever. I need to cut down the straps, because they are too loose, and the little wiggle-worm was thrashing all around, flipping over, and standing up backwards looking at me while I'm running down Legacy. He's so cute. Between that and him throwing toys out, we had a pretty slow go until he fell asleep 5 miles in. But then it was time to head south into the wind with the stroller that acts like a sail. Dinner wasn't sitting very well either, so the miles were pretty slow. That's all right, I need to get in lots of LSD. I think the omnis are bothering my rt ankle. It was stiff last night and this morning. I wonder what has changed. I've been running in that model shoe for 2+ years without any ill effects, but the last two times... I don't mind getting out of that shoe, except the miles are still low. It's a good thing I got them on clearance, or my price per mile would be unreasonably high. I imagine they'll be fine for lawns or hiking. |

| I was not primed and ready for this race. Sleep has been horrible, allergies problematic, and a cold struck Friday afternoon. The only thing I did properly was eat a ton on Friday. The company provided Rumbi for lunch and my niece's 4th birthday party featured spaghetti. Spencer and I drove up, arriving 10 minutes before the start. It was 30 degrees, so I had on too many clothes. I needlessly gave away my age group placement running a slow half the week before Boston, but I wanted to see what I could make up. My legs are still sluggish, so instead of going all out from the start, I started off easy, planning to pick things up for the last 5 or 6 miles. Mile 1: I ran with Amber, a blog newbie. 8:02 Mile 2-12 I ran with Spencer, and a bunch of other guys. We had a group of 6 or 7 guys all clumped together bsing about marathons, OV50, and other race plans. The miles ticked off pretty easy, but by mile 9 it was starting to feel like work. Most of these miles were in the neighborhood of 7:40. At this point, I had a 5 hour energy and started the tempo portion. I didn't wear a garmin, but my effort was pretty steady. I ended up finishing right at 2:19, so the pace was just under 7:00 for the last 6.7 miles. Like last year, this was plenty. I was very wiped out after finishing, and couldn't even accompany Tara and Mark for a full cooldown. Racing 30k 12 days post marathon is not something I am in shape for. But it was a good workout. I did manage to climb back into third place in the age group for the series. Striders does a fantastic job with these races. The courses are well supported, organized, scenic, and start on time. The finisher prize this year was a wicking hat, besides medals for the half and series. 5 races for $100 (if you sign up early) is tough to beat, and it's a nice way to stay motivated through the winter's dark days. Congrats to Ben VanBeekum and Mark P for 1st and 2nd overall, and Tara for 3rd overall in the women. |

They were blocking off intersections and trying to get a guy to come out of his house. I ran past, then stopped to watch, and a bunch of cops that were hiding yelled at us to get out of there. I don't know if they got anybody, but they had a cruiser on the lawn, lights flashing and yelling over the loudspeaker from Kevin somebody to come out. It was pretty intense. After that, it was a quiet run to Legacy, then north until it turns east, then over both overpasses home. I worked in a couple of pickups just to show off for Jens. |

I ran a sub 10 minute mile to BST (400' of climb) , then 4 miles north to Farmington. The view of the valley with new-leafed trees and the setting sun was GORGEOUS. My timing was perfect in that I ran out of light at the same time as I ran out of trail. I ran home in the mostly dark along Main Street, sometimes enjoying the middle stripe in the road when no cars were coming. I brought along a belt with chomps, smarties a cell phone and powerbar. I didn't use any of them. With a couple miles to go, I was still feeling pretty good, so I picked up the pace. I just checked the pace. 7:28 and 7:09. Huh. It felt like I was going faster. Tonight I joined the varsity scouts for a hike to the rope swing by Deuel Creek. We had a party of six, with one other adult. 4 of us made it to the swing easily, while 2 lagged behind. I got some running in shuttling back and forth between the groups, since I wasn't familiar with our destination. When the slower two were making the final leg, I ran ahead to see how far the trail went before dwindling away. My son met me (and startled me brilliantly) when I was coming back with news that one of the boys had fallen off the swing and hurt himself. Sure enough, he had banged his right shin pretty hard, and couldn't put any weight on it. We tried helping him hop to no avail. We were around 2 miles away from the car, but this kid was big, probably 150 lbs. Me and Kevin (the other adult) ended up carrying him down on our backs. Kevin probably did 70%. It turns out I'm not very good at carrying my body weight. Anyhow, we got him down just as it was getting dark. His parents took him straight to the instacare; I don't know the results yet. Hopefully he's all right. I found some new muscles tonight trying to decelerate over 300 lbs coming down a hill. I'll have to retrace our steps tomorrow with the GPS. It'll be worth knowing real distances. This is one of those stories that'll get better with each retelling, I would imagine.

I ran with watermelon chomps, venus, bugs, cool breezes, Muse, Vampire Weekend, Radiohead and my thoughts. This week has been crazy busy. I'm very glad to get this one in. Next week's long run will be on the Ogden Marathon course. I'm going to meet friends at mile 7, and run them to the dam, then loop back around to my car. 4 weeks till UVM. At one time I thought I'd be able to give this race a shot, and now it looks more like a throwaway. My spring schedule isn't very conducive to dedicated hard training. I'm lucky to get the miles in, to say nothing of adequate sleep. I really need a sponsor. It's too bad for me that shoe companies and foundations don't sponsor mediocre, past their prime runners. |

Lately miles have been hard to come by. Work is crazy busy at both jobs. I looked at my weekly graph, and guffawed at my hubris of paying for UVM when this is my training volume. I gotta hit 50-55 this week and 55-65 next week to be legit, I think. IDK. That might help, or it's too late to do any good. Reasonable long runs might be my only saving grace. Anyhow, this morning Ash joined me for 10k on her bike. She was all bundled up with double pants and a sweater while I ran shirtless. I added on while she finished her breakfast and played at a park for a while. It was so nice to have her along. May mornings in the 50s are incomparable. p.m. My neighbor Travis is beginning to run. I joined him on his ladder workout; he runs a modest distance north, then returns home running up and down every cross street. He didn't like that I wasn't breathing heavy. When he spends the next 4 years running consistently, he won't breathe heavily at that pace either.

Tonight's 10k started much later than I would prefer, but the cloudy, moonless darkness, along with the late hour, made for a quiet run. There were only 2-3 cars the entire run, so I was enjoying the middle stripe of the road, rather than stumbling along the shoulder and gutter. Medium-hard effort tonight, with a pause at 4 so soak my head and get a drink. I startled the amorous couple on the swings who were also enjoying the moonless darkness. My friend Nate and his sister Liz were running the Ogden marathon, and I got to pace. I planned to meet them around mile 8, just after the turn to run around the lake, but I saw Kelli running down, so I tagged along with her for a couple miles. She ran well! Shortly after getting dropped, I saw Amber, and ran with her for a mile or so. She PRed by a long ways. It was fun to see waves of runners coming along, with clusters around the pace groups. I heard the 3:35 pacer quit at the half, leaving the course, tossing the balloons and signs in the trash and disappearing into the crowd. It would be pretty discouraging to be part of THAT pace group. I saw several other neighbors and friends, before finally spotting Nate and Liz. We ran from 9-19. Liz was doing her 1st marathon. She was having a tough go, more mental than physical, so we did all we could to keep her distracted and moving along. I laughed at one point she said, "I thought this was going to be fun." She mostly held on to 10 minute pace, so it was easy to keep up an endless stream of prattle to keep her distracted. At the parting of the ways I was tempted to continue along with them, but logistically, it wouldn't have worked out very well to collect the car parked in Huntsville. So I turned around at mile 19 and headed back up the canyon. I wanted to run 20ish miles, and pick things up at the end. My final miles were considerably faster, but not as quick as the couple I ran with Kelli. My garmin is giving up the ghost, so I can't get any numbers, but I stuck pretty close to 7:20 mm. I'm making long run plans for 5/26, pondering an up-down on skyline drive, or some BST nonsense, shooting for 17-20 miles, depending on difficulty of the trail. Company would be welcome!

| Hiked to the rope swing with my 6, 8, 12 and 14 year old. Everybody made it back without a broken leg. Unfortunately, the clouds blocked our mountain view of the eclipse. Anna and I spotted a rattlesnake after it buzzed at us and slithered away. Fortunately, it headed in the opposite direction instead of striking. The older 3 kids walked right by it. By the time we came along, I guess it had lost patience. Talk about a rush of blood to the head. That's my 3rd rattlesnake ever. So both the little girls are on board with going camping for a month in the canyon. I doubt my employer will be as enthusiastic. It's probably for the best, as I'm pretty sure I'd miss Jack, and the rest of them. | |

a.m. I don't know what happened. I was going to get up and go for 11 this morning, but at 3:30 I woke up and puked my guts out. I don't have a fever, so I must have got some bad food, or my wife or kids are trying to poison me. Weird. I'll have to run tonight, which is too bad; temps would have been so much better this morning. But when the alarm rang at 5:30, I couldn't force myself to get up and eat bile-flavoured oatmeal and head out the door. p.m. After finishing up flag responsibilities for the scouts, I left at 9:30. It was dark, cloudy and somewhat cool. I ran from park to park for drinks, and was disappointed that the municipality of Farmington still hasn't activated their fountains. What the #$#? Traffic was pretty quiet, so I got some line running in, with pickups here and there, and fartleks past the churches. 77 minutes overall, which isn't bad. Whenever I get to exhaling every 4 steps, that's my top sustainable effort. (5:50-6:20 pace) My garmin 305 still keeps track of stuff, but the mode button doesn't work, so I can't see workout data unless I hook it up to the computer, and cannot change any settings. I got three years out of it, better than any other Father's day gift I can remember. I love that thing except for 2 items; I'm not all that impressed with it's water resistance, and the wristband size was exactly wrong, in that one hold was too big, and the next tighter one was too tight. This sounds like an obituary. |

After doing the dishes I put Jack in his strap in seat at the counter, loaded up Baby Einstein on youtube, and left the 6 year old sister "tending" while they watched. What could go wrong? I did 1m warmup, then 3@6:40, downhill. I paused to come upstairs and check on the kids. They were watching teletubbies in french. Whatever. 3 more @6:40, then .5m cooldown. | 6:30-8:30 a.m. BST to Farmington pond, home via Lagoon trails and 106. Great run with Andy. The trails were nice, other than a rolled left ankle. (it matches the one I rolled on a rock last Saturday) Stupid Farmington doesn't have a single outdoor fountain turned on. Maybe they are doing Memorial Day to Labor Day. 2 packs of Smarties for a 15 miler might be too little, but I ate oatmeal, 2 toast and choc milk for breakfast, so I couldn't have been too low. The last few miles Andy must have felt peppy; he picked it up, then we took turns creeping the pace faster and faster. He got me exhaling every 6 steps, then down to every 4 steps, and held it for the last 4 miles, so that was a bonus- kind of an inadvertent "little big". After the run, I pulled two 7 gallon buckets of weeds. Hung out with the baby and Tami for a while, then got really hungry. Nena and I went for lunch. We stopped at Wendy's for frosties and fries, then went to In and Out for burgers, and took all the food to Carl's Jr. to eat it. Next time we'll get Frosties, Carl's Jr. fries, In and Out burgers, and eat them at McDonalds. Then it stopped raining and we went and mowed a couple lawns the boys missed this week. My mower didn't have self-propel, so I am very tired. Good Saturday! |

Andy told me about this free 5k. I registered Sunday night, and showed up at 6:40 for the 7 a.m. start. 12ish extended family members also ran, but my kids layed an egg. My 15 year old nephew threw down, so I knew this was going to be an unpleasant, tough run trying to not let him beat me. He's a swimmer, but not a runner. I thought that might help me turn back the clock. When I saw him, I asked if he warmed up. He thought he had, but I convinced him to come run with me. If there had been more time, I could have tired him out, but we only got in a mile or so. We got lined up at the start. I hung back a couple rows, but Josh was right up front. Somebody randomly shot a pistol, and we took off. I immediately lost sight of him, but expected that to happen. This course is full of turns and double backs. All the turning was tedious within the first mile. I think there are 27 turns total, so staying in rhythm was tough. I didn't have a watch, and miles weren't marked, so I ran blindly hard. Around 1.5 I saw Josh ahead. He came back to me bit by bit, and then held a 5-10 second lead. I knew I could reel him in, but didn't really care if he beat me. (or so I thought) I was happy to get some puke zone miles in. We finally worked our way to the last turn, so I thought, but there was one more. At this point, I was feeling pretty bad, and went into float mode, rather than push mode. Nobody up front was gapping me, so it didn't seem so horrible. We made 6 more turns, and were finally in the final .1. I ran in pretty hard, with a sharp left at the very end. A man called out the times: Josh 18:58, Kam 19:04. So what kills me is the slow start, the float mode, and the lack of a final push. I had no idea I would run a time like that on a maze course. 2 sec pr, but better than that, a good confidence boost. On a normal course without 27 turns, a "no float" effort, solid warmup and more than a 12 hour taper, I'm sure I could drop that time considerably. Everybody else finished 5-10 minutes later. Two of my nephews cheated and skipped some of the distance. My 10 year old niece dragged her parents across in 27ish minutes. Grandma couldn't quite keep up with her and was 30 seconds back. There was free breakfast for race participants afterward, but we had to jet to do our traditional NSL to City Creek hike and picnic. I got 7 more slow walking miles in with my little ones, plus 4 hours of paying yard work. All told, it was a long, solid memorial day without a second spent in a cemetery. Maybe some other year.

Sprinklers and drinks at one park near the turnaround were the highlight. After being disappointed in Farmington with no water, I went south instead, and was happy to find that NSL is capable of providing culinary water in public parks. Friday
afternoon I drove with my little-A girls to Springville. We stayed with a friend and spent the
afternoon picking strawberries, playing with little kids, and watching
movies. We had the obligatory
spaghetti dinner, and retired around 10.
For the
first time in 3 marathons, my sleep was horrible. I know I slept some, but never deeply or in such a way to be
refreshed. No matter; I never plan
on sleeping well the night before, and try to make up for it by sleeping extra
the week preceding a race. At 2:10
I was wide awake. I lay there for
a time, thinking about the race, trying to come up with a plan that had thus
far eluded me. Still nothing. I got up and ate oatmeal with Nate and
Liz, plus 4 pieces of toast. We
got all our items gathered and left for the buses around 3.
The bus was
unusually warm, which was strange.
The heater wasn’t on. I
lowered the window, and was surprised at the warm air blowing in. Even as we climbed up to Wallsburg, the
temp didn’t drop much. It was
around 55 at the start; I wish it was 10 degrees cooler. I managed 2 POP stops, including one at
5:58. I made it to the line just
in time for the cannon shot, and we were off.
Miles 1-5 I ran with
a guy named Ben. He was a marathon
rookie with big plans for a 6:50 pace.
At mile 3 he bumped into me.
A few minutes later I checked my watch. It had turned off, and I lost three minutes. No big deal. At this stage I’m still running without a plan, so having an
accurate Garmin didn’t matter. He
was more conversational than I was, and we ran side by side until he noticed
the pace drifting in the 7’s. He
asked if I wanted to come along, and I told him good luck. I figured (incorrectly) he’d come back
to me in the end. I wasn’t feeling
ready to take my perceived effort level any higher. It ends up he executed pretty well--I saw him in the
finisher’s area and he came in at 3:04.
These miles felt fine; not effortless, but not hard at all.
Miles 6-11
I don’t
know the exact moment we picked up the wind, but during these miles it became
very noticeable, then troublesome, then discouraging. Combined with the sustained climbing sections, things slowed
down quite a bit. I was also
noticing some stomach issues that seemed to manifest themselves a few minutes
after passing each aid station. It
wasn’t too serious, at least not as serious as the woman who “hid” behind a
telephone pole and took care of business.
I guess she figured all the runners were too focused on hitting their
splits they wouldn’t pay her much mind. At one point, I considered leaving the course and
bushwacking down to an outhouse, but just kept running. I had a 5 hr energy at mile 9, and
gagged down one Gu chomp.
The wind
blew. It shifted in inopportune
ways, staying a headwind, no matter which way the road turned. The canyon was funneling the breeze
right at the runners. I finally
got smart and tucked in behind a tall guy. As we passed other runners I told them to tuck in. We got a group of 7-8 together and took
turns pulling against the wind.
This helped a lot, mentally if little else. At least we weren’t running alone. I remember being “knocked” off balance once by a cross breeze,
so this wasn’t an insignificant factor.
I’d guess it was sustained 20-25 mph for at least 10 miles in the
canyon, and still a headwind on University, but less intense. I kept hoping the canyon walls would
shield us, but with rare exceptions, it blew in my face from the highway to the
finish.
Miles 12-18
As I neared
the half, I was still with a group, a bit ahead of the 3:05 pacer. My gut was really complaining, and I
ducked into a POP at mile 13. (1.5
minutes) No joy. That excuse gone for good, I crossed
the half at 1:32 on neighboring Garmins, but 1:35 on the clock. Still running without a plan, one began
to take shape. I didn’t figure I’d
negative split the marathon. Let
me put it another way. My chances
of negative split were zero, unless I got a ride. But 3:0x was definitely in sight. I knew the wind was taking a toll, and although I’d reached
the halfway point, the work wasn’t half done. So 3:0x it was.
My watch was screwed up with mile markers, so I had stopped checking it,
except for pace. My POP stop lost
me my group, but I soon found others of their ilk, and we continued down the
canyon, sometimes drafting, running horrible tangents while the traffic raced
by. An iPod might have helped
during these miles, but probably not, as the noise from the cars and trucks,
not to mention the whistling wind would have made listening a chore
itself.
Miles 19-23
The
character revealing miles. “I’ve
run 19 miles. I’ve gone pretty
fast. It’s &#*@ windy. My stomach hurts. I need to puke. This sucks. I’m not going to be able to stay at this pace.” While bombarding myself with these
positive affirmations, the 3:05 guy passed me. “No problem.
3:05 would be nice, but for you, today, that wasn’t in the cards.” It was actually kind of encouraging. That doesn’t make any sense, but it did
at the time. I felt encouraged
that the 3:05 guy was dropping me like a bad habit. Maybe I should have eaten more. At this point I had 50 calories of chomps, two 5 hour energy
and a few oz of powerade. My gut
felt horrible. I thought, “If I
can just puke my guts out, I’ll feel better.” My effort level felt really high, but the pace wasn’t there. At this point, I saw Tara. She ran with me for a mile, and was
very encouraging. She helped me
hold off the walking demon an extra mile.
After she left, I ran on until she went by me in her car. Once she was out of sight, I could walk
without shame; and I did, except for the sign I put on my back that said “Smack
me if I’m walking.” Instead of
smacks, I got a few pats on the back, and some encouragement. I have 7 separate minute-ish,
embarrassing walking spikes on my graph.
“You are giving away too many seconds. You have to keep running! Run! Run, you
lazy &&#@! You didn’t do all
this training to walk in another one!” I tried to screw my courage to the sticking place and
PERSIST! but each time my gut would respond unfavorably. For shame.
To the end
By now I
was close enough to the finish to smell the barn. I regrouped a bit, and ran the last 5k in 23 minutes,
including a 6:50 final mile. At
that point in the race, I guess I finally believed I could go hard for that
many more minutes, whereas at mile 19, there was too much distance remaining
for me to be able to convince myself.
Also, when the 3:10 pacer went by me by himself, I thought, “No.
Freaking. Way.” I latched on to
him, following for a mile. He
seemed to be rasping and struggling, so I passed him and ran on, gaining speed,
watching the big blue arch get closer.
Tara appeared again, and encouraged me to greater effort, pointing out
three runners for me to catch.
Thanks, Tara, I caught
them.
The time
when I crossed was 3 minutes off, just like at the half. ???? I entered my bib at a tent, and was rewarded with a 3:10:16. Results still aren’t online, but I hope
my official time is lower. I beat
the 3:10 guy, after all…shouldn’t that translate to a 3:0x?
At the finish,
I saw my parents, ate some Creamies, had a Dew, and watched the other
finishers. Nate’s parents took us
back to his house, where we fed the kids, got cleaned up, and came on
home. The girls watched Wallace
and Grommit while I drove, trying to keep my knee from locking up. Traffic was great. I set the cruise control in the carpool
lane, and never did anything except follow the road.
By 5 p.m.,
my appetite returned. Luckily, I
was at Mandarin at the time. I
left before dessert; my legs would not tolerate sitting anymore. The 1.2 mile walk home seemed like a
good idea. Today I’m very sore,
but nothing a week won’t cure.
Great sleep last night, that’s for sure.
I know this
is long, but marathons give me a lot to think about. Life is full of ups and downs, steady times, and grueling
moments. I had it all today. I’m not ecstatic about the result, but
I recognize how fortunate I am to be able to toe the line and run as well as I
can, AS WELL AS I CAN. I think I
gave 95% today. It wasn’t the
full-final, but it was a reasonable effort. Today it was a headwind that dampened my spirits, and added a
level of challenge beyond just the distance.
Life presents
a variety of obstacles that deter us from finishing well. I love what the marathon is teaching me
about overcoming myself AND enduring on the way to a strong finish.

8:15 p.m. BST with Kurt. We went to school together from 4th grade on. He did ragnar over the weekend, so we just banged out the miles and visited, easy pace. Saw a dead snake on the sidewalk rather than the trail. No rattle, but it still gave me the willies. Serpents are strange creatures. So I've been thinking about UVM. Regardless of the wind this year, I think the canyon section of that course is horrible. I hate running on concrete in any circumstance, and having rumble strips to trip over made it even worse. The traffic noise was anything but soothing, and of course there aren't any spectators to speak of during this stretch. Two other quibbles, one at the start and finish. At the start, it would be nice to stand in a portapotty line without being soaked by sprinklers. Perhaps in future years they could persuade the rancher to irrigate some other time. Finally, the race information distributed at the expo indicated there would be ice baths at the race's end. I guess they got held up in traffic or something, because there were none. Other than this, the race seemed well organized, and it's a great event for Provo, but I have very little interest in returning. I must be feeling back to normal if I'm complaining...

We did the usual trip to Farmington and back, with the backyard up to Main Street. Ash wanted some apricots, so we had to take that route. Since most of them are falling on the ground, I figure it's okay to grab a couple off the tree, right? Jack didn't like apricots. He squooshed it but didn't eat any, and got mad when I took it away from him. So, I guess he liked apricots, but not eating them. We enjoyed chocolate shakes when we got home. | I set my alarm for a 5:45 breakfast etc. It didn't work. Luckily I woke on my own just after 6, downed some oatmeal and jogged to the start to register. It was $15 with no shirt, which was lucky. The guy at the adjacent table got charged $25. I ran around and back home to use the bathroom and pin my bib, arrived at the start with 2.5 miles of warmup and 10 minutes to spare. I got a spot near the front with some really fast people and some really slow people, including 7 year olds. They really should seed this start, as it's quite congested with two early turns on clogged, narrow streets. The gun went off, away we ran. Around 50 people passed me, which was fine. I didn't want a jackrabbit start or to step on anybody. Sorry to the lady I hip-checked--it was an accident. After getting around the corners, I began picking off the rabbits. The third turn heads east up a hill, where I moved into the top 20. Mile 1 split was 6:14, including the start and hill, so I felt good about that. Mile 2 is rolling. I looked down at my new watch for a split, but I hadn't started it. In the 3rd mile, I was trying to keep everyone behind me. I picked off two runners by the finish, and as I turned the corner into the final straightaway, I couldn't see what the clock said because I didn't want my spectacles bouncing up and down. I don't know how girls stand it. As I got closer (to puking) I could see 18:xx, and knew I would p.r. by a bit. I crossed at 18:44, shaving 20 seconds off the memorial day race. During the downhill sections, I remember telling myself to not coast, and keep pushing, I would want the seconds. It was nice to pick them up. I nearly puked a couple times at the finish, but managed to keep it down. 1st and 2nd came in at 15:07 and 15:14. I wish I could have watched them race. Afterward I did a 3 mile cooldown, followed by breakfast and a typically lame parade, aside from the Veterans, Flags, Marching bands and flyby. For a final sentence fragment I choose...An exhilarating morning. |

8 p.m. 7 of us left for a 2 mile run; 4 on foot, 2 on bikes and 1 in the stroller. At the turnaround, Tami took the other runners home, and I took the little ones to Freedom Hills. After talking to one homeowner, we enjoyed more apricots on the way. So now it's legit. We are no longer eating purloined fruit. The girls played at the park while Jack and I ran laps. There was a hopping jr high party going on, and the kids were mock cheering for me as I circled. On the second lap, I invited them to join me. 4 show-off boys came along. 2 dropped within 50 meters, but the other 2 completed the .6 mile circuit. I asked them to come for another, but they were too tired. On the way home, some freak drove by yelling f-bombs. Who yells f-bombs at someone pushing a jogging stroller with two little girls on bikes in tow? Seriously, those are some issues. Hopefully he'll be arrested soon. The sky was amazing. It looked like what Thomas Kincaid always failed to portray in his paintings.

| 6:15 a.m. Met up with Russ and Twinkies. We had a great run and chat across BST and Lincoln Highway. My sole lament is that it can't cool off enough at night. Would it be too much to ask for nighttime lows in the 50's? Fortunately, enough people were watering that I could hose down in sprinklers pretty regularly. Matt had to get back, but afterwards, Tami made waffles, this time with fresh picked raspberries on top. It was great to see Russ again this summer. Last year we made a wander up City Creek. It was good of him to come all the way from Montana to go on a Saturday morning run. |

| 9:45 p.m. 85 degrees, blast furnace wind. I ran with a heightened sense of hearing, listening for the clicks or whooshes of high volume sprinklers. At least every mile I stopped and soaked myself from head to toe. So surprisingly, this run was somewhat pleasant. I came home and had a zero hot water shower and chocolate shake to recover. It was quite an effort to get out the door, but I'm glad I went. I think the sprinklers shorted out my butt light.

I feel like a chump that it took me till I was 40 years old to get up there. It was unbelievable. The flowers, rocksand views were... Seriously, I felt like I was in God's cupped hand, it was so beautiful. We managed to glissade the snow field without incident, but I don't think it saved any miles, just a lot of unsure steps. So besides the 2 running miles, we walked another 15-16. |

6:45 a.m. Cramming for the 10k tomorrow. Herding cats run with Anna, Ash and Jack. Jack is 1 today. What a great year we've enjoyed with him around. We crossed paths with the Viewmont xcountry team. He was waving and saying "hi" as they all passed. We stopped at Dicks for a yummy cake donut. Anna is mad at me because I was telling her to keep up. I'm such a turd dad. My expectations for tomorrow are pretty low; maybe the off-week last week will work in my favor. Funny how it matters for some reason; it's not like I'm a talented runner or anything... Still, I'm hoping for a pr, but there is nothing in my training since UVM that indicates one will be forthcoming. The speedyish 5k 3 weeks ago feels like a distant memory. In any case, the Desnews 10k is a top-notch event. I hope to go find some marathon friends to run in and just enjoy the crowd and heat.

My mom called at 4 a.m. to tell me she was sick all night and wouldn't be coming to race...That got me out of bed for the usual pre-race oatmeal and toast. I left around 5 a.m. to go to my sister's house and get a warm up in before the start. We ended up running around Ft. Douglas and research park for a bit. Mile 1 and 2 were screaming down the hills, both were 5:55. I knew this wouldn't last as the course headed north. Mile 3 was 6:12, Mile 4 was 6:15ish, and I ran right past the mile 5 marker and aid station. I was more interested in sprinklers on the other side of the street. I haven't run this race since 2008, and the course changed a bit. I didn't know how the finish went, so I just kept running, pushing as hard as I could. I felt a bit dizzy in the last mile, and one guy, the other placer in my age division not named Walter, probably passed me. He only had me by 7 seconds, while Walter had 7 minutes. I came through the finish, immediately went to the temporary fencing, and puked my guts out. I won't trouble you about the color and consistency, but I hadn't eaten anything green, so it must have been all bile mixed with wheat toast and oatmeal. While sorting myself out, I missed seeing my sister come in at 41:30, then walked back down the course and watched my BIL finish strong, and a nephew win the 11 and under age group. I had a creamie, visited with JD, and headed for the shuttle, where I ran into my sister. We discussed the race and got up to Research Park, but not in time to see Fritz. A little while later, allie came by, and I ran by her for a mile, but being a true sport, she refused to let that continue. I watched the runners come by for an hour, feeling the pain of the final 10k of a marathon. I saw lots of bloggers, and even recognized a few. I ran into the finish with Amber, then walk/ran back to my car in Federal Heights. Today I'm a bit sore, but not too much. The race was a full effort, and I'm pleased with the outcome. Hobblecreek Half is next on the list, and as yet I remain unregistered for a fall marathon. I thought my mojo was missing last week when I missed all those days for a scout trip, and the thought crossed my mind that I could just quit running, but it appears to be intact.

7 a.m. 2 slow miles with Grace for tri training. She is a dancer, so is accustomed to stopping after going for 3-4 minutes. She did the first mile faster than usual (9:30) but slowed enough in the second to hit her typical 10 minute average. We have 5 weeks to go... I dropped her home and took Jack and Ash on a bike to Freedom Hills. On the way, I began to wonder if these meandering ponderous miles herding cats are really doing much good, or if I'm fooling myself as to their benefit. Everyone says recovery miles can't be too slow, but I wonder if I've crossed that threshold. I'm always glad to have children along, but if the training benefit is negligible, then why don't I just stay home with them and play the Wii? Anyhow, feeling guilty about running so lazily, I did one up-down on the switchback trail pushing Jack. At least I got 6.5 minutes of high heart-rate. I need to make a marathon training plan for Huntsville. Cart before horse; I need to register...

6 a.m. Jack and I ran to Freedom Hills, somewhat more quickly than usual; I was minus one or two cats. @ the park 2 trips up and down the switchbacks with the jogging stroller. 1st one was 6:25. Despite going much harder and negotiating the turns better, the second one was also 6:25. I love how the sand grabs at the wheels and my feet. My crocs got a little full from the lean over the stroller shuffle. Jack liked singing along with the bumps. I wonder what he thinks about running. Then we came home on a sultry, sunless morning. I estimate if I run 100 switchbacks between now and a marathon, that would be quite beneficial. I'm including the one from Saturday. I shall also mix in 100 6:40 miles. That should get me out of the "marathon shuffle". 3/100

9:30 p.m. Jens rode with me to Freedom Hills. He ran around the park while I did two switchbacks, then joined me for a third. He almost kept up, so I was impressed. The moon was full, so the headlamp was mostly unnecessary. Then we ran/rode home, with numerous detours to get soaked by high powered sprinklers. My shoes were soaked for the last couple miles. Chest area is nearly fully recovered from the muggy 10k plus 8 miles on the 24th. Also, used a garmin for the first time since UVM. Am I really that slow? I may have spoke out of turn yesterday about getting in 100 switchbacks and 100 tempo miles. I think I can do the switchbacks, but might need to scale back the tempo. 6/100, 0/100

My knee and seat area don't agree with cycling. I dismounted and did four straight zig-zags. It was tough, but each one felt better than the first one. I dropped her and Jack home and did 4 laps on the soccer field. The first one soaked my shoes, so I took them off for the remaining three. Football players on the west end and soccer girls on the east kept me going a bit faster than I would have with no audience. From just those couple miles barefoot, my feet feel....not normal. | Longest run ever with Jack. I fooled myself into thinking that things cooled off enough last night to make this run ideal. It was cooler, but not quite enough. Inexplicably, Jack awoke at 5:50 a.m. After a bit of a snack, we headed for destinations unknown. He was pretty happy about the run for the first 7 miles, then finally fell asleep, slumped over folded in half. I fixed him up so he was reclining, and he slept for 5 or 6 miles, and was awake for the warm, sun in your eyes jaunt up Pages Lane. We ran a bit on the half marathon course today with the back of the pack. Some ladies that passed us exclaimed, "Oh, isn't he the cutest thing ever?!" I'll allow for the minute possibility they were talking about Jack, not me. I estimate pushing him added 5% effort. I was tired at the end. Big shock. Showered quickly upon return, and left to golf with my family one last time before my parents fly to Melbourne this evening for 18 months. Bittersweet. |

9:15 p.m. Late start because we were busy with Max's Eagle Court of Honor. Tami and Jens were going to play tennis, so they dropped me at Smoot. I ran 1 mile to Freedom Hills. By now it was completely dark. On the way, Tami got me worried about snakes on the trail. I ran 4 switchbacks worrying about serpents biting my ankle. But none did. I haven't seen any rattlers on the trails since May. I think it's safe before 10 and after dark. After FH, I ran back to Smoot fast to catch a ride home. They weren't there. I was so mad they ditched me, I ran home fast, too. The fast running dissipated my anger. I don't know that 100 is going to happen in the next 6 weeks. Maybe it's one of those goals that was a good idea at the time, but not very realistic. Or it's one of those goals that if I stretched and worked to achieve it, it would be a worthy accomplishment I remain undecided about Huntsville, pending Hobblecreek. If I can't come in between 1:23 & 1:25, I don't think there's much point in going for broke at the end of September. And if there's not much point in going for broke, I'm not all that interested in running another 3:12ish marathon; been there done that. 18/100

We looped back to the car, and I headed back for 4 more on the Blvd. My internal GPS works pretty well; I was only off by .1 on my turnaround for 2 miles. Coming back to the car for the second time I dropped a 6:50 mile, which was nice to do 17 miles into the run. We had good chats about racing and race day psychology and mental preparation. More than ever before, I'm locked into finishing the switchbacks by marathon day. When I got back to the car for the second time, I went to the creek and made a sufficiently deep wallow to sit in the cooling and soothing waters of Mill Stream. I've never felt this okay after a long run. That's a good sign... I can't wait for the TOU half reports to start rolling in.

I have a fast group and less fast group going. Let me know if you want to be involved. 51/100 |

| 5 more switchbacks, then laps around the park, grownup running through the sprinklers before the crack of dawn. It was a cloudy sky all over this morning. Very nice. My recovery Dew is in the freezer getting cold right now. I wish it was the marathon already. Things are looking nice for Saturday's run on the Huntsville course. I'm still working out the details, but tentatively hoping to be running by 6:30 or 7 at the latest. 56/100 |

Long, faster than expected run with Matt and Angie. A thunderclap that sounded like a bomb woke me up at 2:15. Only Jack cried, which was surprising. I got up after 3 more hours of listening to the rain and thunder. Breakfast was oatmeal and PBH sandwich. We met and headed 20 miles up the road from Huntsville, placing drinks every 5 miles. I wanted 4 mile stops, but I didn't want to seem like a baby. All the bathrooms were locked at the top, but runners are good at improvisation. So the plan was to run 12-15 miles easy down the hill, then pick it up at the end for some marathon pace. Matt missed the memorandum though, and we took off running crazy, 6:40 pace from go. There was no letting up, as this course is pretty steep. We were so dialed in, we ran right past our 5 mile water stop. At mile 10 I had a flat Dew (bad idea) while the others GUed. We commented how fast we were going, but nobody seemed capable of holding back. We got onto the familiar miles of the Ogden Marathon and Striders Half marathon course, and the fast miles just kept coming. I figured we'd end up dying at the end, but we just kept pushing, finishing up with 6:50 miles for 18-20. Once we got to the park, my feet were cooked. We got a drink, chatted with Jake and Andrea, then slowly (finally) ran another couple miles. My only regret of the run was that the Chevron was sold out of chocolate milk. Today my legs feel tired, but not beat up. That run was more than I bargained for, but I'm glad of it. Matt and Angie are tough runners. Angie dragged me along through some gut-wrenching miles at 16-17. I was glad to have pushed through, cuz the rest of them felt better. I'll take all those data points I can get. |

| a.m. A mile plus of running around with my kids on their sprint tri. Both of them won in the 12-14 age divisions. Regrettably, the division was broken down as 18 and under. I'm really happy for both of them. The goody bag had registration cards for a 10k on Thanksgiving; Jens already paid for his own entry, and Grace asked me to sign her card. Good stuff. In the p.m. We went to Freedom Hills for a Labor Day picnic following a day full of yard work and cleaning. Of course the switchbacks beckoned. I completed four with my left morton toe throbbing and my blistered right instep refilling. Afterward, I rooted around the valve boxes in the park and turned on some sprinklers to run through and play frisbee. Most of us got all the way wet. Jack got a few drops and didn't like it. He said quite a lot of stern gibberish, so I got him out of the wet zone. It was a great send off to summer vacation. 5 kids back to school all day tomorrow. 60/100 |

He would answer me in his guttural, glottal talk, and we'd visit for a while. He went to sleep nicely when we returned home, thank goodness. I hate listening to the baby "cry it out". I barely kept going after I got the bills dropped off, one mile in. I felt SO sluggish. I've been staying up late watching baseball, and it caught up to me. I promised myself a big chocolate shake if I endured the run. I must be in full marathon mode, because by mile 4 or 5 things felt pretty good. It's weird how it can take so long to warm up. Due to a last minute camping trip, I missed going long Saturday morning. After spending the day working around the house, I knew I needed to get some work in, so off to Freedom Hills, just after sunset. I knew the darkness would limit my number, but I can't fall behind. On the third trip down the switchback trail, I rolled my rt ankle so far that I felt it up to my knee. I'm lucky I'm small, and don't put that much weight. I foolishly persisted, and did two more, descending much more slowly and carefully. There's a certain spot on the trail where I heard some critter hissing at me each time I went by. By the 7th time by, I decided it was some reedy plant scraping on a rock in the wind. But it hissed at me on my final climb; I remain unsure what the noise is. In any case, I was glad to finish. Afterward, I went and got scraped around the tennis court by my son. He's quite a player, whereas I haven't played much tennis. It's too much like pulling weeds; most of what you do is pick green things off the ground. Good times, though. 77/100.

Turns out it was AngieB and Jasmine Sessions. I ran with them (at a much faster than recovery pace) for the next 7 or 8 miles. Great talk about racing and the upcoming marathon- 3 weeks to go! Some alarm went off in my brain as we approached the Farmington cemetery. Jasmine said it was 8:11. I had 49 minutes to get home, clean up and make it to church. No problem, hahaha. I got those last 4 miles done, came through the door at 8:42, and only missed an opening song. Great run, not exactly "easy miles". I love fitting everything in. |

I ran to chase the sunset, like an inverted lava flow, fiery orange cooling to smoky grey. The wind kept company, and distracted all the bugs. As the cloudy sky darkened, the foothills dimly glowed in the foreground of black peaks. 5 hr. at mile 15 and 21, Smarties till then. That's the long and short of it. I ran into Jasmine at about 5 miles. She had 20 planned so we ran the next 9 or so together. We took the switchback trail up to BST and ran to 1300 east in Bountiful. These were tough miles with lots of climb. I had no fuel, which is becoming thematic. . I turned for home just after rocket park. Following the run I spent 6 hours helping the boys catch up on the lawns. My arms got as tired as my legs. Again, no food from 10:30 till 4:30. Next week's long run will be 75 minutes. I'm jealous of everyone who ran TOU yesterday. I wish my marathon was complete. I felt really stale. I'm sure/I hope all the walking had something to do with it. I am remembering the 20 mile tempo run with Matt and Angi, and the 97 switchbacks. I've put in the quality. Rise at 6, eat, POP, get ready. I carpooled at 7:00 with Dave, Spencer and Tami. Spencer is a grizzled marathon vet, but Tami (my wife) and Dave (my brother in law) were running their first marathons. We got to Huntsville, and found a bus for the long ride up to the start. We joked and had a good time for the drive, and immediately joined the lengthy POP line. Lots of people have complained about the late start, but I was glad to be doing all this stuff at a normal time in the daylight. I remember starting Layton marathon a couple years ago and running for 7 miles in blackness, never seeing anything or recognizing a face. The scenery was beautiful, and it was great to see all the people and feel the unmistakable energy of runners milling about preparing to do battle. I've been targeting this race, expecting to run 2:55-3:05. I rested well all week, ate and drank big on Thursday, then went back to normal routine on Friday. For breakfast I had oatmeal, 2 toasts, and ate a sandwich and donut holes on the bus and waiting for the start, plus 20 oz powerade. I was topped off, more fueled up than for any other race. My Smarties and 5 hr energy strategy was in place, except for one thing; I neglected to remove my utility belt before I threw my bag on the trailer. Luckily, I located my bag in a sea of identical drops just before they pulled away. The temp at the top was pleasant, but not cool enough. When the race started it was probably 60. I left Tami and Dave, and headed up for the front to run with Angi and Josse (good to meet her in person). They were both gunning for sub-3. Right on time a weak-sauce siren sounded. Nobody started until the race director frantically waved everyone on. The first 18 miles of this course average 3-4% grade. The miles rolled by with seemingly little effort. I ran with Angi and Josse for the first 4 miles, then Josse dropped back a bit. We settled in around 20-25th place, and just rolled down the mountain. The aspens were gorgeous. I noted clouds, and willed them to move south to block the sun. Alas, they dissipated, and we ran the whole race in full sun. I was surprised at a straight section around mile 6 to see a glimpse of the lead motorcycle. That's by far the longest I've ever stayed near the front. Everybody held position till around mile 5. From there to 18 we would come on a runner or two every mile, and pass them. We ran through all the aid stations, taking what we could on the go. Angi was 1st female, of course, so she got lots of cheers. These miles were unremarkable from a racing standpoint; we just rolled. Splits for 1-13: 6:36, 6:41, 6:33, 6:38, 6:34, 6:34, 6:36, 6:34, 6:40, 6:35, 6:36, 6:33, 6:29. The half time was 1:26:12. I had planned on 1:26 or 1:27 to leave a reasonable shot at sub 3, so we were right on track. Through this point, I had eaten 150 calories of smarties, had a tiny bit of gatorade, and dumped lots of water on myself. I ditched my shirt at mile 9; it was already becoming uncomfortably warm. The halfway point of the marathon is triumphant and demoralizing. I was happy to be on track, but cowed at the task which remained. I had run 13 of the 18 "easy" miles. I had spent most, if not all my stored energy. The work was only beginning. At this point, Angi plugged into her music. Within moments she gapped me. I closed it and she encouraged me to follow suit; the music was pumping her up. I got mine on, and we continued down the course together, but running solo. The temperature was rising, and stirring up a dreaded headwind. It was drowning out my music, so I know it was a stiff breeze. We dealt with it for the last half of the race. Thinking back to UVM, I tried to draft and get Angi to draft, but I gotta be honest, neither one of us make a very good wind shield. We probably could have worked together a little better; it might have made a difference in the end. Mile 14: 6:35-- Still rolling along, enjoying the aided grade Mile 15: 6:35-- drank a 5 hr. Mile 16: 6:33-- Feeling good, although my right glute is getting a bit tight. Mile 17: 6:09-- This freaked me out! The caffeine must have really kicked in. Mile 18: 7:43-- Oh. I see. The marker wasn't placed correctly. I'm using a Timex watch, so marker placement actually matters. Angi's Garmin beeped 50 meters in advance of every marker, and this was the only one that was way off. At this point, I'm cloudy enough mentally that I can't figure out the real average of those two miles. So I didn't know I was in trouble until 2 miles after the trouble began. Corrected splits average 6:51. I am running out of grade and dropping 20 seconds per mile. Mile 19: 7:00-- Huh. A legit mile in the 7s. 3-4% grade has turned into .5-1%. This is really starting to feel like work. It's been 4-5 miles since I ate anything. I still don't eat anything, though 8 packs of Smarties remain in my belt. (That's 120 smartie discs) Mile 20: 7:15-- I'm not stopping the bleeding. Angi and I are running our own races now. I know Tara is coming to run at mile 21, and I'm holding on for that. I was at 2:12 at this point. "A 48 minute 10k. I should be able to do that. 7:30 pace is 45 minutes, leaving 3 minutes for .2 miles. Okay, I can keep it under 7:30's for the rest of the way. I don't want this to be close." Mile 21: 7:16-- Tara arrives. I take another 5 hr. This is really hard. She is encouraging, going back and forth between Angi and me. Angi has picked up a bike pacer, who gives me some water that is cold. I drink a little and squirt the rest all over me; I feel much cooler. We have turned off the highway on to the windy (in both pronunciations of the word) road past the monastery. Tara points out a red shirt guy. She says he's 2nd place. I tell her, "No way. There's another 10 or 15 guys up there." I can't believe five miles remain. I ran this last week with Dave, and we've got a long way to go. Mile 22: 7:35-- Wow. This is hard. I'm getting dizzy. I try to surge, to keep pace, but when I go a little harder, the dizziness slows me down. I keep the effort steady. Angi is still right there; we can still make sub 3. The margin is super close, though. Mile 23: 7:35-- Angi walks a bit. Does that mean I get to walk? "Oh no you don't, Kam. Not today. Not on my watch." Tara is relentless. "I feel so dizzy." "I don't care. Run till you fall down. Keep running." I keep running. I pass the red shirt guy while he is walking. Mile 24: 7:56-- Oh no. That's a lot of seconds over 7:30 pace. Surge...dizzy...slow down. "Don't you dare walk. You ran those workouts. You ran those switchbacks. Earn it. Go." Still moving, NOT walking. Mile 25: 7:43-- That's a little better, but not enough. To the finish: 9:00, 7:30 pace-- We are back to 500 S., heading toward the park. One mile straight, then a final turn into the finish. Rollers, up and over the highway. A policeman is holding up traffic. I wish I had to wait for the cars. Switchbacks kick in. Tara, lying through her teeth, "Wow. Who does that? You are picking it up on the hills." I'll take any encouragement. Sweet mother, this finish is going to be close. I didn't want to be this close. The road to the park is lined with US flags. I run by the 26 mile marker, and turn right. "Take the tangent! Go, Kam. That's the finish. Everything...go, go, go!!" Tara drops away. I'm going as hard as I can. I look at my watch. I can't make out the numbers. I hear the announcer guy, "And our second place finisher from Centerville, Utah, Kam Fillmore!!" I cross the line. My 6 year old says I collapsed, but I prefer to say I lay down abruptly. The volunteer says, "Okay, you need to get up." "In a few minutes." Oh the drama. They wheel me into a tent. I lie for a while with ice bags dripping sweet coolness all over my head, neck, shoulders, stuffed in my shorts. Revival. Oranges, grapes, creamies, water, smiley kids, elation. 3:00:34. I delude myself into thinking that clock is synced to the half marathon start. No such luck. It's official. I'm 35 seconds away from being legit. Sigh. I don't feel great, but we have other work to do. There are still family members on the course, so we head back to that final turn to wait for Tami. We are having a great time passing out ice cubes to tired, hot, thirsty people at mile 24.5, trying to coax and encourage them to the finish. Tami comes. She's plugging along, grinding them out. I joined her for the last 1.5 (bonus miles!) She's so great. I'm so proud of her, making it through her marathon without her shins exploding. Dave comes in as well, so we all made it. Unexpectedly, we hung around for awards. The had a trophy with a couple Snowbasin ski passes. 1st place was 90 seconds ahead. I didn't have another 35 seconds in me, let alone 90. Angi won, of course, but they had the female winners all messed up, somehow, so she didn't get the adulation she deserved. The runners all knew who won, even if the RD didn't. Man, this is long. So looking things over, I have a couple thoughts. I should have kept better contact with Angi. We could have worked together for a few more miles. Tara, bless her, was good for at least 3-6 minutes faster finishing time. She lived up to her assurance that there would be no walking this day. I wonder about the 5 hr. I never stacked 2 that close, and I wonder if the dizziness had anything to do with it, or if it was just the heat and exertion. Hmmm. I should have eaten stuff after mile 13. I could analyze this to death. The bottom line, though, Saturday was an incredible day.

My legs feel some semblance of normal today. Perhaps a 3-4 miler after work. Each day it's like a layer of soreness is removed to reveal a new uncomfortable area. My mood needs to go for a run. I got out with my son. To Smoot Park and back. The drinking fountain wasn't cold, but it's still on. My right lateral glute is sore. Everything else loosened up in a mile or so. I think reports that the Huntsville Marathon is a body masher are overstated. Any marathon at race pace is a body masher.

My back was killing me, so I needed to run to. I managed to move the soreness to my legs. Jens came again, but he wanted to do 2 tempo miles. He's not being very nice to his old man. We walked out the door and ran the first mile around 7:40. Not too tough. At the turnaround he decided to pick it up a bit. I let him go, but kept him close enough. He ran pretty hard for .6 and started to fade. I passed him on a hill, leaving us .25 of flat straight to get home. At this point I ran out of my croc. I had to go get it, and he passed me back and gapped me. I decided to let him win. It's probably even money that I could have caught him. That second mile was 6:40. He was pretty gassed and glad to go inside. I ran four additional pedestrian miles, more suited to post marathon recovery.

Jack and I tried out the BST. It's too bumpy. I've already ruined one stroller up there, so I better just leave him home on these runs. We got up, went over to Cheese park and got back on the road to 500 S, then returned home. My legs felt excited for about 2 miles. Then they felt trashed. I'm getting there...

This is so funny: Runners World: Why now for your first attempt at the distance? Pete Magill: I could give you an idealistic answer about climbing every mountain. But the truth is, after six national masters cross country titles, and numerous American age-group records, I get tired of people suggesting I’m not a real distance runner because I haven’t run a marathon. The chairman of U.S. Masters Long Distance Running holds this belief. Even the magazine I write for, Running Times—maybe you’ve heard of it?—last year didn’t include me in its age-group rankings, even though I had the fastest 50-plus 5K and 10K times ever for an American in the age division. I consider it my duty to show we 5K/10K and cross country runners can run marathons if we choose to. I’m really tired of my neighbor, who’s run 5:30 or 6:00 for the marathon, telling me that if I trained harder I could do marathons. This evening my daughter's choir concert induced a brooding melancholy. Before I started running I was pretty involved w/ choral music, and it has completely fallen by the wayside. There simply isn't time to do it all. So I hopped on the TM and dripped away my sorrows with 7 miles and the NLCS.

After a delightful day of employment, I returned home in time for a bit of a run before rushing off to see The Scarlet Pimpernel. Early evening runs in October are delightful. 3 weeks post marathon I am rudderless. The only goal I have come up with for the rest of the year is to top 2000 miles. This is a sleepy goal, requiring little effort; a scant 28 mpw. My legs have no spring. My rt ankle is irritated. A tempo run might help, but I can't force one out of myself.

Jack wasn't very sure about the reduced metal decking, but he did like to go down the slide feet first on his belly. After we returned, Jens and Grace joined for 4 miles. It was a bit rainy, so I stayed inside to watch NFL. It's getting to be the time of year to become acquainted with the new TM. I did 7-8-7-9-7-8-7 mph each for 1 mile. The faster miles felt good. My legs haven't done that for nearly 4 weeks. One of the disadvantages to running inside is not having anywhere to blow my nose. The world is my Kleenex, but not inside the house. I had to stop once to track down some TP. All that remained was the square with glue on it at the very end of the roll. I ended up washing my face. My old TM is for sale on KSL for $100. My daughter is selling it, cuz she doesn't have any money. 5 people have called, but nobody has come to pick it up yet. I just checked my shoe manager, and I am incredulous that I ran 1090 miles on that thing. It doesn't seem possible. The more I think about it, I guess it's possible. 5 seasons of 24, 2 of Prison Break, lots of Survivor, Amazing Race and NFL. I guess the bulk of my winter training for 2 Boston Marathons was on that noisy beast. So the new mill set me back 700 clams. Currently, that's $15/mile. Ouch. I know Tami and the kids have put in a few miles, so that might bring that number down a bit. At least we cancelled the Rec Center membership, so not having that monthly charge for 15 months will pay for the mill. Gosh, this is a long entry. Maybe I'll label it as a race report...

Jens came with, and ran 10k for the first time ever-- 53ish minutes. Of course we were going much easier than he plans to do the race, but a good confidence builder for him to go the distance. Baseball is over. Is there anything else worth watching? It's going to be a long 5 months until April. I can already sense that lots of neglected house chores will be completed over the winter. There must be a correlation between being inside and seeing all the stuff that needs to be buttoned up and actually doing it. |

| Happy Halloween. After inspecting my girls' loot from trick or treating, Jens and I ran to Fresh Market to scope out the leftover candy. They didn't have much. During the run he told me running wasn't his thing. He'd given it enough of a try. I told him fine. You gotta run your own race. .25 miles from home, with an uphill finish, I told Jens he wouldn't be sprinting ahead and beating me home tonight. Despite my 93.2% effort, he matched me. That kid has more spit in him than I thought. Too bad running is so boring. He went in to eat his Halloween candy, and Tami met us at the door. I asked her if she wanted to go for a run. She did. I recovered on the porch while she changed, and we headed north instead of south. It was a perfect night, with moon, and still. We didn't leave till almost 10, so the roads were pretty quiet. We had a nice visit, and to my surprise, she wanted to do 6. I was pretty tired, and dinner wasn't agreeing with me by the end; I thought I'd be up all night and missing work today with flu. To no avail, thank goodness, although I wouldn't have minded missing work. If a perfect night to run 11 miles exists, last night was it. |

I got him cleaned up, and ran out to the garbage can to dispose of the evidence. It was surprisingly temperate. I grabbed a shirt, spurned the treadmill and finished the run outside. 'Twas a beautiful, clear morning. I visited Ricks Creek, drawing strength from the water spirit of melting snow. Then I came home to chase the girls off to school, split a bowl of oatmeal with Jack, shower, and leave for work. (allie's oxford comma) These morning runs make me pretty sluggish, and it's a long-lasting effect. I think I prefer running in the evening and going to bed, waking up all recovered. I knew I didn't want to get up in the morning on Friday so I went for a while tonight. 1.5 on the TM. It was way too hot, so I finished outside, hoping to run through the enchanted Christmas light forest. But it wasn't foggy, and lots of homes are sans lights. Headwind out, which was quite cold, then a pleasant return. I had a chocolate shake when I got home, which made me so cold I had to chase it with hot chocolate.
