Short-Term Running Goals:

I've been a very active runner since High School ( I usually run 5-6 days a week) but I have yet to run a Marathon or any other competitive race since then. I want to get back into competitive running and hopefully have similar results like in High School. Although, last January 09 I got shin splints really bad and it took a good 6 months of rest and rehab to finally get back in the groove. I would like to run a sub 8 minute mile on my first Marathon but maybe I should just worry about finishing it first?   

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

I'm 42 years old and I'm married! I enjoy the outdoors (Hunting, Camping, Backpacking)

Holy crap. I'm excited you are here.

This place will be a big help to you.

To get your pace/mile, you need to go to the course tool and create a course. Once saved you can go back in and Analyze it. At the bottom of the page you just type in your time and whatever else you want and it will tell you your average pace and splits (sort of).

We need to hook up this summer when I don't have to take the kidlets to day care and run a few times a week together.

Today wasn't to bad of a run. It was a bit chilly but not too bad. I was hoping to run longer but it took a while to get my legs loosened up. I'm still having problems with shin splints and it definitely slows you down. I have a Doctor's appointment on Monday and hopefully that will help.

Way to get after it. Did you head down to the Jordan River Trail? You should try it. So pretty and makes for a very diverse run.

Well, I went to the Doctor today and I have Posterior Tibia Dysfunction.......something (a good case of Shin Splints) Thanks to the Treadmill! He said I need to take it easy for about 3 weeks if not I could end up with Stress Fractures. He recommends doing some Physical Therapy and cutting back on my miles and doing some Cross Training instead.  I may need Orthotics buy my Super Feet are good for now. If anybody has any suggestions that would be great! I don't want to be down for too long.

Definitely take it easy fella. Better to keep it simple for now and build back up then to find yourself out of commission for longer.

If it is similar to shin splints I do have a very good therapy for you that will help recover and strengthen them. We should meet up soon and I'll tell you about it.

It's really a resistance exercise. Point your toe and have someone hold it while you flex it forward (your leg should be out strait). They shouldn't stop you from flexing it but should make it kind of difficult. Then reverse the exercise and have them push on your foot as you try to point it (you'll have to sit against a wall for this one).

My good friend is a Physical Therapist and told me about this exercise. It has worked better than just about anything else I've tried.

If you buy an exercise band you can do this yourself too. Just an FYI. That way Annie doesn't have to be your physical therapy nurse.

Thanks for the advice. I will give it a try. I really want to run farther than my current measly runs, but I am always afraid my shins will get worse.

Well...I didn't run at all last week due to my dumb injury (shin splints) but I did however go to Physical Therapy yesterday. It was really good! I did it over at TOSH. The Pysical Therapist that I saw is a Marathon Runner and he ran some in college. He knows exactly what I'm going through. Unfortunately, he said I need to lay off of it for at least another 2 weeks and then ease back into it. It's going to be tough, I want to ge out there run now! But, the exercises he gave me should help a lot and I should get over the injury.

Well....I went to Physical Therapy this week and the Doctor thought I could try to see how I would feel running. My legs have been feeling great and I haven't felt any pain for about a week or so but I was kinda hesitant to run. I was glad I did. It felt pretty good. I didn't feel any pain in my legs, I was just sore and I felt out of shape. It's funny how your body reacts when you take off 3 weeks and you don't exercise.

I found out today that I got into the St. George Marathon! I'm pretty stoked but I'm worried about my Shin Splints coming back. I had a bone scan done last week. My doctor wanted to make sure I don't have any Stess Fractures. Luckily it came back negative. I've been taking it easy lately trying to get over it completely. I'm not sure what's going to happen now that I have to start training hard. I have about 20 weeks until the race. Does anybody have a good Marathon Training Schedule? Since I've been having problems with my legs I probably should follow an easier schedule.

The shins are feeling not too bad right now. I bought a sleeve for both of my legs and I think it's helping. Thanks for the book! Ya we need to do some long runs. Hopefully soon but it depends how fast I can get back into shape and not get to tired on my long runs.

My shins felt pretty good on Saturday. I just felt out of shape more than anything. I felt like I couldn't get going but the rest of the week went good. I haven't had much pain while I'm running, it's usually the day after that I notice pain. I just hope when I'm increasing my mileage every week that the pain doesn't get a whole lot worse. The foot doctor gave me a anti-inflammatory for my legs a couple of months ago. I've already used up one bottle's worth. I haven't used any for about a month now. I'm wondering if I should just keep using it until I'm done with my marathon? I've heard that they can cause stomach bleeding if you use it to long.

Well.....today was a bad day overall. I ran 4 miles and my shins were killing me. I haven't felt this way since January. I had to walk towards the end, my legs were throbbing.  I also went to a sports medicine  doctor today and he looked at the bone scan and didn't find a stress fracture but he said my shins are inflamed and recommended that I take at least 3 months off for my legs to heal. Unfortunately, It's a no go for the St. George Marathon.

Man, what a raw deal! I just called them and the registration fee is non-refundable and you can't transfer it to someone else. I guess in years past if you cancelled you had a guaranteed spot for the following year but they stopped doing that this year. I'm just out of luck. Oh well....I'll just try again next year.

Crap! When I called they asked me for my information and they took me off the list. I did that assuming I would be re-imbursed or could transfer my spot or have a spot in next year's race but they don't do either of those options. What a crappy deal. So I guess anytime you plan on running the St. George Marathon you have to look in the crystal ball ahead of time and make sure you'll be there on race day.

It has been a while and hopefully I do it right this time. I've been doing exercises and going to physical therapy and it has definitely helped. The Therapist gave me a nice easy running schedule to follow and it will take some time to get back 100% but it will be worth the wait. I don't want anymore setbacks with my shins.

Have you tried using KT Tape yet? I wonder if that would help. I see a lot of stuff about it, but I'm not sure how well it really works. Emily is using it as we speak. I'll ask her when she gets home if it is helping with her runners knee.

Ya, things are feeling better. I've been following this schedule that the Physical Therapist gave me and it's been working so far. I've been doing 3 miles every other day or so and doing some tempo running as well. I love the Garmin I have because it helps me keep my pace and is a big help when I'm doing the tempo running. I've been cross training on the off days and that seems to be helping as well.

Well...I've been feeling pretty good lately. The physical therapist suggests that I add 10% a week. So, it will probably take some time but I don't want to rush things again. Hopefully things will continue smoothly.

Yep, I can feel a difference. Breathing is easier. However, the humidity is a killer! I went out twice this week in the morning and it feels like a sauna.

This week has been awesome running! I haven't felt this good in months. My legs haven't given me any problems and I've finally been able to run back to back days. I ran 4 miles yesterday just under 29 minutes and my last mile was around 6:50. Today I ran 5 miles in 36.30. I haven't done that in quite a while. Every 3rd run has been a tempo run, I've been doing tempo running for about a month and a half now and it definitely has helped with my pace and endurance. Hopefully I'll keep improving and stay injury free.

Hey, just lurking at the end of a long day at work and bumped into your page. Judging from your recent workouts, my guess is that you may want to revise your goals for your first marathon. You're a lot faster than a 3:30 marathoner. If you inject some speed work into your marathon program, my bet is that you'll BQ your first time out with time to spare. Enjoy the return to competitive running!

Well, my legs seem to feel better. I saw the physical therapist on Friday and he definately thinks it's the ITB. He told me I need to stretch it and do exercises to strength it. I forgot to buy that foam roller over the weekend. I need to get it for sure. He said I can still run but make sure it's not getting any worse while I run. I ran Friday and it felt ok but I was sore after.
