Short-Term Running Goals:

I've been a very active runner since High School ( I usually run 5-6 days a week) but I have yet to run a Marathon or any other competitive race since then. I want to get back into competitive running and hopefully have similar results like in High School. Although, last January 09 I got shin splints really bad and it took a good 6 months of rest and rehab to finally get back in the groove. I would like to run a sub 8 minute mile on my first Marathon but maybe I should just worry about finishing it first?   

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

Personal:

I'm 42 years old and I'm married! I enjoy the outdoors (Hunting, Camping, Backpacking)

Overall time: 30:10. First run in about a month and a half. I felt ok for the most part. Towards the end I was definitely sucking in air. I think riding the bike at the gym for that month off kept me in decent shape. Hopefully the weather will stay good and I can continue to get back in shape. I did notice my ITB band was acting up a bit in my right leg. I thought for sure a month off would of healed it. Does anybody know if riding a stationary bike would cause issues with the ITB band? I'm even still doing exercises and stretches for it.

Riding a bike shouldn't be too impacting, now. It may just be a little tight. Make sure you are rolling it often. In fact, heat it up with a pad, roll it, then ice it. It'll get worked out quick. Welcome back.

After I ran on Monday I could hardly walk the next couple of days! My quads are sooo sore and tight. I think what happened was after I ran I stretched my quads really good and I did some excercises for my shin splints and ITB band. I honestly haven't done those exercises for a while. That may have caused the soreness but I don't know, I've never been this sore before. Maybe it is due to not running for a month or so but who knows. My quads feel better today but I think I'm going to lay off the running for a couple more days.

You are running very well. You can definitely finish a sub 8 marathon on your first try. Shoot for one in the fall to give yourself a few months of base building before you get into the marathon training grind. If you are at a base of 20-30 miles per week, you'd be right on track for your marathon goal.

Nope, no St George this year. Now my IT Band is giving me issues in both legs and that was due to Saturday's run. It seems the further I run the more I aggravate the issue. I'm going to try and really strengthen the hips and stretch like crazy.

Ya, the last couple of runs I've been pushing myself more than normal. I feel pretty good for the most part. My legs don't bother me that much if I keep it around 5 or 6 miles. Hopefully I can keep increasing my distance on Saturdays without having any major issues with my legs.
