| Is is just me, or did it feel like an oven out there this morning? I have obviously forgotten what it's like to train in the summer, because it was only about 70 when I ran but it felt like 90. "Easy" run down to Highland High over to Stratford and back on 20th East. HR was 7-10 BPM higher than normal (my HR is always higher than everyone else's I know) for this pace and distance. Haven't slept well for the past 5 nights due to some back pain. Maybe that contributed to the problem. Some days you feel like a gazelle, others you feel like a manatee on land. Today was a manatee day.
Congrats to everyone from FRB who ran Ogden last Saturday. After being out of the loop for a year, I was amazed to see the dominance of the group.

Tried to work in a little tempo in the middle of an
easy 6, with the plan being to do mile 3 around 6:00-6:10. I have
apparently forgotten what 6-min pace feels like, because I hit 5:25
pace (didn't look at the Garmin to adjust my pace) for 1/2 mile with
AHR of 188 and MHR of 194 over that section, meaning that I was in VO2 Max mode. With my current level of fitness (or lack thereof), I couldn't keep up the
pace much longer, so I decided to call it good on my tempo work for the
day and finish at an easy pace. I'll shoot for a full mile next week
and will try to stay just under 6:00 to see what HR does there. Should have slowed down the easy miles by 30 sec/mile or so.
Good news is that achilles pain is minimal and only present in the very early going. Pace: 7:09 AHR/MHR: 175/194 |

| Sugarhouse loop. Consciously tried to keep pace
easy. Comfortable throughout, especially due to lower temp (around 50)
with light rain. Beautiful morning for a run. Very minimal AT pain in
early going. Pace: 7:26 AHR/MHR: 164/179

| Missed my workout today--had to get up early to review some pleadings that had to be filed today and had commitments until 10:30 tonight. Bummer. |

| Had to be on road at 6:30 for meetings in Beaver, so squeezed in a quick run before. First 3 were very easy, final mile was quicker at 6:34. Pace: 7:13 AHR/MHR: 164/181 |

| Met Heather, Ellen and Cherell at Davis Park and ran up Emigration Canyon. Easy, conversational pace all the way up, then picked it up after Ellen and Cherell turned around at 6 (Heather had turned around earlier--she had already run a few miles before meeting us at 6:30 because she had to be back by 7:45). Really enjoyed the company for the first half of the run--need to make a habit of that on long runs. Decided to work in a little tempo on the downhill section to see what the legs and heart could handle. Here are my splits for the tempo section, together with AHR for each mile:
Mile 8: 6:34/155 Mile 9: 6:26/165 Mile 10: 6:20/169 Mile 11: 6:19/171 Mile 12: 6:09/174 Mile 13: 5:48/180 Mile 14 (cooldown): 6:44/173 Very mild AT pain on much of the climbing section. Also felt it a little on final couple of faster miles. Iced afterward. Overall, it was a rejuvenating long run that got me excited to really start training again. Pace: 7:37 AHR/MHR: 162/183 |

Run 1: 4 miles. Wanted to get a few miles in before running
neighborhood 5k with Jacob. Very easy pace, but had some fatigue left
over from Saturday's run.
Pace: 7:29 AHR/MHR: 166/185 Run 2: 3.12 miles. Neighborhood Memorial Day 5k. Ran with Jacob to help him avoid the temptation to sprint for the first quarter mile and be miserable for the rest of the run. Time: 29:20. Jacob followed instructions, only had to walk once for about 100 feet, and beat his buddy Zach in a sprint finish, so it was a complete success.

| Very easy run to Sugarhouse and back. Took Maya along
and she wasn't overly cooperative, which slowed the pace down.
Very easy effort.

| Allergies have been going nuts over the past few days, so I started taking medication
yesterday. May have overdone it with both Benadryl (just before midnight) and Claritin,
because I felt like I was in a fog on the run. Kept pace slow, but it
still felt lousy, and HR was too high for such a slow effort. No matter how many times I go through allergy season,
it always seems to catch me off guard how bad I can feel until the
medication gets on top of things. Yuck.

Trail run with Black Sheep group. Lisa invited me to come along and it sounded like a good run in preparation for Wasatch Back, so I dragged myself out of bed at 5:30 am. Met at Cucina and, with group of 16, worked our way up to 11th Ave and down to City Creek, where we took off onto a trail that eventually connected up with Shoreline Trail. I stayed with the lead group for 3-4 miles until, on one of the steeper climbs, I looked down at my Garmin and saw that HR was closing in on 190. I backed off at that point and let my heart calm down. Felt fine after that. I was probably suffering a little more than usual due to my failure to run on Wednesday and Thursday. Need to be more consistent in the coming weeks as I try to get some fitness back. Overall, it was a great run with a fun group of fantastic runners. Pace: 8:32 AHR/MHR: 171/189 |
