14 Mile Hike, Timpooneke.. Trail is still covered with snow. We made it to the saddle, but no one wanted to go further. But a great workout... good times.

2.9 miles with Smeagol. I struggled mightily today mostly because of a stiff left calf. I didn't notice it until I started picking up the pace. It caused me to stop and stretch a lot and walk part of the course. I must have strained it during the hike yesterday. I consentrated on running in such a way that that calf got stretched on each step -- seemed to help.

I hope it get better quick. I spent a little extra time stretching after the run.

I tried to run 14 miles but ran into a couple of problems.

1) American Fork canyon is just not good for running: not enough shoulder and too many fast cars and bicycles. After getting about 1 mile away from the visitor center (6 miles away from home) I dodged a fast bicycle and decided it was enough and turned around.

 2) My left calf stiffened up and my right hip started causing me a lot of pain. So I had to walk (actually limp) the last 3 miles home. It's a little discouraging wondering how I'm ever going to finish the half marathon, let alone a full marathon next year.

The calf should heal up with more time, but the hip has bothered me for years so I don't know how it's ever going to get better.

I'll just keep running and hope for the best. I know everyone else struggles with pains now and then.
