Russian champion tries Crocs, commits to racing a marathon in them

Nikolay Chavkin in the video below did 3x1000, first two in Adidas carbon-fiber models, the last one in Crocs. Surprised by the result (2:52, 2:52, 2:50) with the fastest interval done in Crocs, he committed to racing a marathon in Crocs if the video gets 42K likes and 195 comments (for 42 km 195 m, the marathon distance). Nikolay's current marathon PR is 2:14:00. The video was created by a Russian sporting goods store chain. Averaged a 7:02 mile pace. This one was a bit faster, I ran solo. I had to focus on staying relaxed and I had to focus a lot on my breathing to keep it balanced and steady. It felt good to open up more though. Followed with 8 minutes of core.

Faster than I thought I would be able to go. Need to be more careful in the future so I'm not jumping in workouts but just running steady.

2 mile warm up and 4.5 mile cool down. my legs felt great before the race. My splits were 5:30, 5:34, 5:33, 5:36, 6:08, 6:01. Felt good through the first 2 miles but the hardest part of this race was just that I hadn't raced in so long it was hard for me to understand how I should be feeling at certain parts of the race, I thought I was pacing it well but once I hit 4 miles it got real tough. I was hoping it would be a lot faster, the effort was there but I just didn't feel like I could lock in to a higher gear. A little frustrating but it was okay. This run was bad. I felt fine before the run but as soon as it started I could tell something was up with my stomach. I felt like I fatigued pretty easily too and by 4 miles I was feeling really out of it. I turned around at 4 and the way back was really slow. I got back feeling pretty dehydrated and drank a lot of water but I didn't quite space it out enough and I felt pretty off the rest of the day.

I warmed up for the workout with the team and ended up just running the warm up loop 3 more times, then ran back to my apartment from there after I got tested. I felt good the first 3 miles and then felt like I was fatiguing more easily and took it slow.

Saturday workout. Mile splits were 5:12, 5:10, 5:33 and then ended at 3.6ish miles. Honestly the first mile I felt great. It started hurting gradually more throughout the second mile and by the 2 mile mark I was feeling it pretty good. I feel like my endurance is there but my strength isn't.I think it will come with more workouts. It did feel good to open up and now I can focus on small improvements every day/week. Today was very motivating for me. 

I will start putting my heart rate on in the morning on next weeks logs.

Today was another rough afternoon run. My stomach was feeling off and I could tell as soon as we started moving on the warm up exercises. I just felt pretty out of it and low on energy on the run and around 7 miles it was just trying to hang on and finish. Today honestly felt like a workout mentally wise in terms of staying in the moment. I definitely need to fuel differently because something's not working. 7:29 pace, 161 avg hr.

The first 5 or 6 miles today I actually felt a lot like my normal self. After that it got a little tough again but I think it was a good sign. I tried eating more before the run today and that was a  good move.

Workout at Mantua. My first mile was a 4:49 and it basically crashed a little after that. Today was honestly pretty discouraging. My summer 10k was a lot better than that and I know I am more fit now than I was then. I just feel like there are a few things that are off and I haven't fully felt like myself lately. The meeting with Natalie was good today and I learned some things from that that should help.

Some of these runs have been frustrating with how I"m feeling but today I felt very good and it was a good gift from God!

It was a little tricky trying to fuel right because the race started so late but I think I fueled well. I actually had a great start and got in great position. We went out in a 4:45 and honestly I wish I didn't hear them calling that split because my first thought after that was that it was gonna be real hard not to fall off. I felt good a mile in, but around a mile and a half I think i started to fall off the front group. I tried going with Ethan for a little and he dropped me too. Honestly after that I feel like I got stuck at around an 80 percent effort. I didn't give up, but I had an extra gear I just didn't drive into. I'm a little disappointed about that. I feel like I'm in better shape than my time showed today. But I will just have to be better in workouts about holding on for longer and longer, and also having secondary goals that keep me locked in and giving my very best when and if  I do fall off. I need to want it more. I see how bad Justin Hartshorn hurt after today and it showed me that even though I was hurting at the end of the race, there's more pain that can be endured than I did today. So I wasn't happy with today but it was a good learning experience for me that will help me run faster in the future.

The race was good! 15:35 5k. The pack went through the 2 mile at a 9:25. I had fallen off a little on lap 7 so I was probably more like 9:30-9:35ish through two miles. My high school 2 mile pr is 9:27 so that was good. The last mile was really tough. I wish my legs and energy felt a little better today but I was very happy with my mental game today. Around 3 laps in it was already starting to burn and I felt like I did a good job of cutting it into shorter pieces and staying in the moment and forcing myself to hang on and just be fine with it hurting a lot. I do wish I was a little more committed on staying with Justin the last few laps but I did try my very best to stay mentally checked in and go as fast as I could. 

Around a 7 mile cool down and I was pretty tired but it was good to do a good distance run while I was feeling pretty fatigued. I felt like that was good for building up my strength.

Honestly today I felt like my mental game was strong but for whatever reason I felt like my body didn't have as much to give as I hoped. The tempo left me feeling more tired than I thought I should have and so the hill reps were rough! The 3rd rep I fell off really bad from the leaders. I sat out then ext one then came back in and fell of a little at the end of the 4th rep. The 5th rep hurt really bad but I found it in me to not fall off. 

I felt like my lungs weren't super strong today. On the downhills I couldn't breathe at all but I didn't have enough energy to put in the effort to slow down. I actually was happy with my mental game but today is another reminder to be more diligent on the little things so I can get myself in better shape physically. Today was the hardest workout for me since school statrted.

7k race in 22:26 (5:10 mile pace), no idea on the splits. 

The first mile I felt relaxed and I think around the mile mark the front group got a little on me and Mark and Justin. I was okay with it because I knew Mark and Justin would help push me, and I felt like I was still in a good spot. Kept our eyes on Bridger, I thought he was gonna come back to us for a minute there. Looking back I wish I had surged to get up to him. On the 2nd uphill part it hurt alot. There were a few times I wanted to fall off during the 2nd half of the race and I surged when I felt that to keep myself locked in. Honestly I kind of just let Mark and Justin go with 1k or 1.5 k left. I was happy with today but not super happy. Honestly I think if I wanted it enough I could have stayed with Mark and Justin the whole way. 

This race was a lot better than CSI so that was good. I feel like my mental game from then to now is night and day difference. 

But I still feel like I overthink races and can get more out of myself even when it hurts really bad.I just need to want it more. I need to do a better job at making more surges and doing them at the right times. I have it in me, sometimes I just decide it hurts too much.  I'm happy to have a week off, more for the mental aspect than the physical part of it. I want to be top 7 but I know I am going to have to do some things differently to get there.

Today was tough. It wasn't the pace, but it was the second day that my stomach was really bothering me. The first 2 miles were really hard and in the middle it subsided a little. It was still there but not as bad. Then the last 2 got really hard again and I was really glad when I was done. I think I am not eating enough or drinking enough right now. I need to bump that back up as my mileage is going back up. This reminds me of the runs at the beginning of this semester where I was feeling off, and I think the answer is just better nutrition. My thighs were also pretty sore today but I'm not worried about that it's just my first week back up. I'm rolling them out as well.
