I have not checked in for a bit and you are up to 3! YEAH! Hope everything is feeling good and healing up well.

Funny story: today at the gym, my friend and I were headed over to the treadmills and this other group of people we know (they work out together every day, there are 3 of them) said something to us. I immediately stopped and said, "Did you just ask if I wanted a cookie????" Nope. They asked if they looked clique-ie (not sure how you would spell that word!) My mind had to go to cookie. Now they will make fun of me forever. ;o)

From Dan on Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 22:40:29 from 24.209.83.20

Funny!! Our brains are wired the same that way. Oh two things 1) I dunno how to spell that either and 2) I see you may want to do a half marathon this summer-ish? I know a few in Ohio (and surrounding areas)...hehe

That is great Dan, take it slow & be smart about it! Don't underestimate the value of running 20 ... in 2010 I only ran over 20 8 times, and only went over 30 2 of those times! Glad you are getting some movement in again ... pain free! :)

4 Mile.  Nice 43 degrees. Overall decent feeling. I notice I am running a bit stiff - almost waiting for that severe pain to hit. Bit chilly. 17 w/6 degree wind chill. Run felt 'ok' and honestly that is to goal for now. My therapist gave me the 'ok' to increase my mileage some so that is great news.

On a side note, she video taped me running and reviewed it with some people. They said I was running VERY stiff. I watched it and agreed, the problem was fear. I am afraid to loosen up because I am waiting for it to hurt. That is something I need to get over. They also said I was heel striking and wanted me to consider changing that. I honestly have never been a fan of changing my gait but maybe should, but when? I want to build my base back, and quickly get ready for Boston. Honestly I am not even sure how to go about it, I mean I have already read tons about it, but I have no desire to run barefoot (yes that is extreme).

From derhammer on Sat, Jan 14, 2012 at 22:52:26 from 70.113.125.159

Dan, glad to hear you are on the mend. Gait - don't know about that - maybe try some barefoot running on grass. When I changed shoes that helped me, but I see you are already running in some minimal shoes.

From Steam8 on Sat, Jan 14, 2012 at 23:28:33 from 166.70.55.77

I was so happy to see a 7!! yay!! They watched me run too. I also heel strike and I don't lift my legs far enough behind me. I have really been working on changing my gait. I notice that when I am tired, I am running like my old self again. It is hard to do. I hope it helps me to not get reinjured! I'm so excited that you are getting ready for Boston! It will be fun to see you! I better make your avocado pie this week to celebrate!

From Dan on Sun, Jan 15, 2012 at 00:04:54 from 24.209.83.20

Thanks Allie, is good news. Tell me about those 3's!

Burt- I am waiting to hear just that!

DH- yeah I love the lighter shoes. I do not think I can run barefoot in the snow (grass is covered). You owned Newtons, think that would help?

Steam- SO true, when I get tired, its over. I do love my pie! lol

From allie on Sun, Jan 15, 2012 at 11:04:11 from 97.117.82.156

well, i have only worn the 3s once, but so far i really like them. as i mentioned yesterday, they are designed to be a bit more narrow than the other versions, and they definitely fit tighter around the midfoot and offer less wiggle room in the toe box than the 2s. this is not necessarily a bad thing though -- they are still very comfortable and lightweight, and the ride is smooth. i actually like shoes that are a bit tighter around my feet. i love the 2s but i always felt they were just a bit too "pillowy", if that makes sense. i have to review them in detail on weeks 3 and 6 of the test, so i will let you know when i do that.

hi burt.

hi steam.

hi hammer.

From Dan on Sun, Jan 15, 2012 at 20:44:07 from 24.209.83.20

Thanks Allie- I really enjoyed my Kinvara 1's (600 miles on 'em) and the 2's are nice, but if I had a complaint it would be the too soft feeling. That is a very minor complaint, but it seems like the 3's might address that- I look forward to your review.

From derhammer on Sun, Jan 15, 2012 at 20:54:46 from 70.113.125.159

Wow - Kinvaras too soft? Maybe you should tie boards to your feet! lol

I don't really like Newtons since there are so many alternatives out there right now. I guess they served their purpose at the time, though.

roadrunnersports.com will let you try shoes for 90 days and return them if you don't like them, so you could go that route. I have returned shoes a couple times with them and not had a problem.

From Dan on Sun, Jan 15, 2012 at 21:01:03 from 24.209.83.20

DH- well maybe soft is the wrong word. Maybe squishy? Just up front. I dunno.

I really don't want Newtons, I just thought if I was going to try and change my gait this summer- it could be an option. I normally thrive in change, but in this area, Id rather not.

Flat- Great question. I have lingering pain in foot or quad at times - both related to the nerve, but overall I feel 'ok' Not good really, but certainly not bad and since I am able to run now that makes it better. Honestly, I am afraid really. That one of these steps will bring that sharp pain back. I hope the legs hold up and as I enter more training that will disappear from the mind.

From Hamdog Alum on Sat, Feb 11, 2012 at 23:53:03 from 24.240.65.116

Just keep that base building going, let the speed come to the legs when you're good and healthy. If you don't get much speed in for Boston you're previous fitness and experience will do more for you than you know. #1 goal is to make it to that start line.

26- cold... very cold and brisk windchill in the single digits, and kinda painful feeling it.  All the same I enjoyed getting out and getting in a decent run. I ran two miles sub marathon pace (Mile 15 was one of them). I figured out I can get to my pace and hold it, just not going to be able to hold it for 26.2 at this time in my running. I did not eat anything weird, but I did have two cups of coffee and I usually do not drink it so that must have been in. There just is no cool way to walk out the woods and back on the path is there? They should invest in porta potties. Oh well, felt better after that.

Decent run, quad started to bother me after mile 14, but not dreadful. MP-ish miles 5 (7:10), 10 (7:21) and 15.

I figure I just want to get to that starting line again and whether I run a 7:15 pace or a 9:30 pace I am not sure it is going to matter. I did take some Vitamin1 before the run and it felt alright. I agree on your comments, it is all about getting the miles in. And, on race day, it only matters if you finish! Heck, sometimes that does not even matter! All that matters is that you start.

Felt sore- slow run, easy 5.

Adidas Adizero Boston2 Miles: 5.00
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

So I started today wanting to run 20, but this would be the 4th straight 20 miler on Sat. Normally when I am logging big miles I wouldn't think to much about it, but I was sore yesterday and if I am trying to run by feel (pfeel?) - I better give what the body can take... or is that take what it can give. Either way. So I decided on 16 today. I was trying to figure out what would be a 'realistic' goal for Boston. I just want to enjoy it, but I am a competitor. I figure if I can get under 3:30 for a recovery I would be more than satisfied. I set the Garmin for 8 minute miles. Yeah a year ago that would be easy, but now it is tough for me to hold that long term

Hour before the run I had my bang bang (dynamite-spicy) shrimp. I did not know if that was smart or not, but it worked out well enough. 16 Miles, AP 7:52, splits 7:59, 7:53, 7:57, 7:52, 7:45, 7:48, 7:51, 7:51, 7:59, 7:58, 7:50, 7:55, 7:52, 7:53, 7:58, 7:27. Some of these were on hills and a pretty constant head wind so I was happy to keep it even. The last mile I sped it up to my old MP and had plenty in the tank at the end so a good run. Finish off with one of my non-dairy, coconut water based fruit smoothies. Yum-o!

Nice workout Dan. Those 1st few marathon workouts always seem hard. I think you'll find you're more ready than you think. Most of the time we don't realize how good of shape we're in when trying to log the miles. It takes a little taper to let the fitness come to the surface. Nice work recognizing the right amount of volume and intensity.

Back home- that and great running weather make me happy. Nice, crisp 48 degrees to run in. I was really debating what to run today. I ended up deciding on a 'quick' or quicker than last Saturday 13 miles + warmup/cool down. Run was good, have to cross the pre-run pizza off the list though. I also did this without any Advil (I was taking on my long runs). Splits 7:55, 7:56, 7:19, 7:44, 7:19, 7:59, 7:29, 7:56, 7:22, 7:52, 7:55, 7:54, 7:53

Overall I was good with these. These match my Indy training of 18 months ago, so I am getting some fitness back without any big workouts. Let's see how the body fairs during and after Boston. AP 7:44

Hey if it's the same Indy as your profile pic, that 3:19 would be a pretty solid time to be able to run at Boston given what you've been through. Little tailwind and downhill might even push you close to a PR...?

Yes, relax! It is such a pretty town, I wish I had been able to see more of it!

My BEST advice: walk the freedom trail the day after, eat lunch and get delicious treats at Faneuil Hall, finish up with a RUN up the stairs at the Bunker Hill Monument (just 294 stairs). It will take the soreness right out of your legs.

And on one of your nights there (Sunday?), the North End is the place to be! Best Italian food AND cannoli and gelato....NUMMY!

We decided to make the trip to Boston a two day affair and get a room in NY about 4 hours away. This was so we could surprise the girls with a stop off at Niagara Falls. They had no clue we were going and even after seeing some signs saying the falls were the ‘same direction’ figured there was no way we were stopping since we were clear that we would do some sight seeing in Boston while I was there to run. They really enjoyed that stop and took many a picture. My oldest daughter graduates this year (time… it just vanishes) and she is very much into photography. She is very good with Photoshop and is helping do wedding pictures this fall. Maybe I will post some Falls pics with race ones she took. So what about the younger? Well the way into Boston Saturday was the stop at the American Doll shop. Yes, I was patient with many other dads and then off to the hotel.

The Marriott downtown was nice, but wow is the cost of everything in Boston high. I actually booked a hotel out of town, but mom had a surprise call and helped us get a room down town. Very cool.

Sunday was full, started out catching the 5K with Erik (Hamdog) – It was good to meet him and is a pretty darn nice guy (and he doesn’t finish last). I was happy to meet his family and we watched Andrea finish the 5K. She had a great race – mid 17’s well on her way to sub 17. Shortly there after I got me meet Jon (JG), Amy (Steam), Jake, Andrea and Rachelle – everyone was as nice as they are on here if not more so. We went for a few mile run to be loose for Monday (cept Amy, she had that shot in her knee, but at least she got to experience the marathon and I was thrilled for that). It was really good to talk to everyone. I am holding Jake to his training tips, but he is making me get on the track…

Monday was the moment. I knew it was a long road back from injury (or at least it seemed so) but going into the weekend I thought I had a shot at a PR if we had a tailwind. Then the heat forecast came out. Then it kept getting worse. I am sure everyone is well aware of the heat – that was the topic of the marathon. So the plan? Start out strong, but controlled, if the heat did not bother me I would go for it, if not just enjoy the ride.

Here is how it went down… er at least what I recall …

Miles 1-2 7:39, 7:37 I felt really good. Paces right were I wanted them with almost no effort, ready to kick it down if I kept feeling this way. I was also very loose and keeping it ‘light’ with the runners around me.

Mile 3. 7:53 This is where I actually felt the heat a bit. I figured I still wanted a good race, but I better back it off for the next several miles and see how she went. The mood was still light and fun though and I took the time to high 5 all the little kids out there.

Mile 4. 7:50 This was not on the ‘things to see’ in Boston. So we all know people have to ‘go’ at moments there are no available bathrooms. Usually not a problem as people run off the course a bit and take care of needs. So less that a few feet off the course a lady decided she had to go and dropped it all. A full moon was not on my list for Boston, but we sure got it. Seriously?

Miles 5-6 7:59, 7:47 The miles were not peeling off anymore.. It was certainly warm, but manageable I thought. I still was joking around, but I noticed others were starting to labor. It was awfully early in the race for so many people around me to be working this hard.

Mile 7 7:58 Most of the people I kinda paced with early on had fallen off. At mile 7!? I believe this was the first of many road signs they had up that said HOT HOT HOT, at first I took it as a compliment, but then I realized they wanted to remind us of what we already knew… IT WAS HOT…duh…

Mile 8. 8:10 I staggered back my pace some. I was feeling it a bit and did not want to crash. I marked this as the ‘let’s forget the Garmin and soak in the event’ mile.

Mile 9-11 8:26, 8:07, 8:42 Some up and downs as Boston is full of, but I was enjoying the people and fun times here. The families with sprinklers, a guy racing as ‘Waldo’ and kids with squirt guns abound! The support was second to none.

Mile 12-13. 8:29, 8:25 Wellesley. They did not disappoint. I was happy to see a Republican, a Baseball Fan and a Time Lord in the mix.

Mile 14. 8:26 Halfway , I felt okay, but the heat was even affecting even my sense of humor. I still went out of my way high 5 kids, but I was very happy to see the fire department open some hydrants.

Mile 15-16 8:35, 8:36 Mellow miles, convincing myself that the good news is the humidity was low. Oh and another big fat sign telling us it was hot and to hydrate. Thanks.

Mile 17 9:06 bathroom stop. Every marathon so far I have one and just one potty break. This killed me. Why? That porta potty. Sure I was only in there for 20 seconds, but the temperature in that thing was at least 20 degrees warmer. For the first time, I felt sick from the heat. I got back on the road and trotted for a few.

Mile 18 9:27 The first half mile here I was trotting trying to get that sick feeling to pass.

Mile 19-20 8:46, 9:17 I started to feel better after getting sprayed off and more fluids, but I am not sure I ever was 100% back after that stop.

Mile 21 9:37 Paul said Heatbreak Hill was for tourists… well on this day, I was a tourist. The heat made that more difficult that it should have been.

Mile 22-23 8:43 The down hills following. I walked as I drank my cups of water/Gatorade here on out.

Mile 23-24 9:15, 9:11 The crowd was great through out, but as we got to these last 4 miles it was incredible support. Here is where high 5’ing the kids cost me. I saw some little ones and made sure I got them… well then there was a wall of them so I kept going. I swear there was over a half mile of kids to high 5 and I got them all. I was beat after that all joking aside. I could not wait to grab some water.

Mile 25 9:39 I was getting my ‘almost done’ feeling when I saw these very cool flaming shorts. I though, hey a guy on our blog wears shorts like that. As I went to pass him I was like… wait… that is Mike (rt). He did not look well, I stopped and introduced myself but I am still not sure he knew who the heck I was. He told me he did not wear the matching shirt, but the heat was brutal. I told him I was the idiot who wore all black.

Mile 26 9:25 The family was yelling at shouting, it was funny because they were between a family from Canada and a family from Mexico who helped them yell. They were afraid I would not see them in the crowd and honestly in my daze I am glad they got some help shouting. I stopped for a second to hug the girls and finish up.

Mile  .2 7:58 (pace) That gave me to break I needed to finish up running stronger.

Horrible heat, but would I do it again? You bet I would. I know this was not a great event for many and I am now pretty positive I could have finished at least 35-30 minutes faster on a cool day, but I don’t care really, it does not make it a bad marathon. I honestly enjoyed the experience.

That night we walked all over and yes I wore the medal. The people were really nice and supportive. I enjoyed the Commons and Gardens. That night I woke up twice breaking a fever. After a little research - could have been slight dehydration, but who knows. I feel fine nowJ. Anyone who read all of that… sorry! And sorry x2 as I typing this on the road… who knows the errors it may contain!

Dan you ran a great race. It sounds like you are proud of your effort and you should be! You had to overcome a lot of obstacles in your training to get to the starting line and through it all you stayed the course. That's not an easy thing to do when the chips are down. Many runners never make it past a year or two running because of injury. You're a great inspiration to all beginners.

1 Timothy 4

6-10 You've been raised on the Message of the faith and have followed sound teaching. Now pass on this counsel to the followers of Jesus there, and you'll be a good servant of Jesus. Stay clear of silly stories that get dressed up as religion. Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this. Take it to heart. This is why we've thrown ourselves into this venture so totally. We're banking on the living God, Savior of all men and women, especially believers.

Today my 11 year old ran her first 5K. It was part of a street festival. Our church has a parade we are apart of and we run the 5K before. She really did not prepare fully for it, but I have been making time to run with her all the same. I was not sure she really could run the whole thing since she never made it 3 miles (at once) in our running together.

So we made it out on a little chilly morning  (40)with  some cold drizzle to boot. I am thrilled to say I paced her all the way start to finish and she never gave up! She ran the whole distance and I was one very proud dad. Un-importantly she was 7th (of 14) in her age group. She was very excited about this and now claims she is going to run every day and see what she can accomplish. (I believe the awards the others got was motivation).  I would love it if she keeps with it from this age, but even if she doesn't this has been a great day!

Congratulations to your daughter Dan, that is totally awesome! I remembered when Alex ran his first, he was 13 & ran a 26:?? ... time did not matter, I was so happy & proud because a few months before I could not have paid him to run a mile! 18 months later he broke 19 minutes ... it is amazing what a little training can do!

Went to a new doc today. He came highly recommended and has helped people like Arnold S(however you spell his name) when he was on his fitness tours as well as countless runners. Problem? He is expensive. We did some joint adjustments in the pelvic area and lower back. Also used a cool laser (not like neat, actually cool as is cold) on my aductor area as after much prodding and tweaking there was much scar tissue here.

1 Week no running. Bummer. Many treatments coming... says his goal is getting me running in just over a week. I am cautiously optimistic, but he has all kinds of little tools (he says European athletes use, but stateside insurance wont cover of course).

Anyway, not real happy, but don't worry about me, go check on Steam!

From Dan on Fri, May 04, 2012 at 20:58:02 from 24.209.83.20

Steam- Yes I believe he does, he seems very sharp. He agreed for the most part with my PT, but feels the joint still needed adjusted or it would not heal right. So since I was not healed completely there is still scar tissue built up there... Hope you are ok!

Ham- Yes I think so, thanks

Joe- Me too- at least the set back is now and not a few weeks from a big race. I cancelled my early June 5k and I am debating canceling a half marathon... neither are key races for me, just part of my summer training plan. So a week off is not good, but really the timing is better than it could be

IJR- No, I don't think its either. I knew I was not 100% going into Boston preparation, but did not want to miss it so I did everything I could to make it. I think my body just wasn't ready for full bore training and this step is just necessary. I pray it is short though :)

3rd visit to the doc. I can run two miles and bring it up from here. As long as I keep it slow until next wed. After many adjustments, workouts, stretches, cool laser treatments, x-rays and overall poking he is convinced that the nerve area is no longer a problem (at least not much of one). The remaining injury is the pectineus muscle and still adductor area. So far treatment has been good, but without pushing the miles or speed I am unsure of total progress.

The cause? Always a mystery but during all the testing he was very surprised/impressed how strong my muscle areas were for having that much pain manifest itself in the quad area... until... my hamstrings. He told me my flexibility in my hamstrings were like a 90 year old man.  He asked me what I was doing to correct this... and well... hey are we suppose to stretch those?? He thinks this has thrown my running form off and bunch of other big terms causing the injury. For the past week I have been learning how to really stretch that area and wow am I tight there. This will be a daily stretching routine as I get my miles back. I am not bothered too much since I do not have have a focus race until fall. I wanted to set some June 5k/10k PR's , but that will have to wait. I just want to run without discomfort and then really push myself to my limits.

Yikes -- sorry to hear about this Dan. You need to come out here and visit with our ART guy John. Seriously. Although it is really really hot right now, it would still be nice ;-).

Even two miles is a blessing sometimes! Big hugs (after you shower all that sweat off).

From Hamdog Alum on Sat, May 12, 2012 at 20:41:25 from 71.82.247.163

All that makes a lot of sense and I'm glad you have a direction of action now to deal with the pain. It sounds like you've got a good doctor to work with. Hamstring flexibility is a big problem for a lot of runners. Start subbing some of run time right now for massages in the hamstrings. You'll make really fast progress combined with a good stretching routine of 2-3 times a day. I'd shoot for 1 massage a week, try to find someone that does a half hour and can just focus on the hamstrings. Maybe you can get a package deal of 5-10 massages at a cheap rate.

From Dan on Sun, May 13, 2012 at 17:18:01 from 24.209.83.20

Bon- I would love to visit ... what does ART stand for? I am taking any and all hugs I can get... keeps ya from going insane :)

Erik- I really do like this doctor. One of my problems is the money I have already spent on my first doc and then 16 weeks of PT rehab ($) and now this guy is so highly recommended - he is not cheap. I know I rushed my PT and she knew it so I could run Boston, but I really want to get healthy. The massages are a good idea, I am going to see what the price packages are. I am also working on changing my stride- yet I heel strike in everything, even Newtons. I am looking to try some Hattori and see if that can help me while I keep my miles low.

nice job. interesting to read about your visit to the doc -- i have been plagued with tight hamstrings my whole life (i think maybe i was born without them?) i definitely have to take extra care to keep them loose and healthy or my lower legs start going haywire as a result. i hope this is the fix you need. good luck.

also, i like your new pic! it's been awhile since i made my rounds on the blog -- surprises everywhere!

From Dan on Sun, May 13, 2012 at 17:13:06 from 24.209.83.20

Joe- I was very bad at not stretching. I would work out my other areas, but it seems that not stretching was a bad idea for me.... you are still a young pup, when you hit near 40, start :)

Allie- Thanks for the like :) Hey you said you take extra care, I am doing like 6 different stretches or workouts for the hamstring area. Do you have anything you love?- I am always up for integrating something that works

From allie on Sun, May 13, 2012 at 21:16:58 from 174.23.153.13

1. the stick

2. lie down in front of a wall and put your legs up on the wall with your back and head on the ground (you will be shaped like an 'L'). scoot as close to the wall as you can. slowly lift your head and neck off the ground until you feel the hamstring stretch -- it's very strong! don't go too fast and don't hold the stretch for too long (i usually do 5 to 10 sets of 8 seconds each).

3. hamstring curls on a weight machine -- go with a very light weight and lift one leg at a time, very slowly, three sets of 10, continuous, alternating left and right legs.

this is what has been working for me -- and just general care like stretching, icing, rubbing out knots (with a tennis ball) and just doing everything i can to stay as loose as possible (like taking short walking breaks at work).

Doc visit today. Had me all over the place stretching and working out. Put me on TM  and I had my phone in my pocket. So I hit start and then stop, but hopped off it to empty my pockets. He said "you didn't just do that right in front of me??" He told me to stop doing things like that or I would aggravate my injury. So I ran on the TM for just under 10 mins... it was funny... he said "you make that look so easy". Here I am just trying to land on my forefoot and keep my knees up. Anyway, after a long visit, he will see me again a week from Friday but gave me the green light to move up to 5 mile runs and even add a little speed in later :) Happy  news for me! He said if Friday goes well I can move up to 10 miles. I am hoping!!

He also said don't be a knucklehead.. hummm...

What have you done now? You are injured about as much as I am. At least your latest won't keep you from running. You make it look so easy because you are so stinking fast and a natural running. Lucky!

From Dan on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 22:54:15 from 24.209.83.20

Something we talked about to change where my body is being stressed during speed work. I think I have poor form anyway, so I wanted to give it a go since I was rebuilding anyway. I am not sure I can get it to stick though.

Taylorsville trails and then some bike path. Very nice morning to run. There is mental aspect of increasing mileage that triggers in me. Hard to explain. When I cant run at all, and then can run even just a few miles it is frustrating yet nice to be able to just run- even if a little. Then getting to bump that up does something mentally that I like.... so I'm mental.

From Dan on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 15:59:11 from 24.209.83.20

Joe- they are the lightest shoes I own, almost half of the racing flats. They do help, but I am so lazy at times I lose focus and I am sure I am hitting heel... Keep those knees up I tell myself.

I was going to run early, but I ended up staying up way to late with our church have a set of revival meetings and getting ready for my Sunday lesson. I knew it was going to get warm later, but I figured it was only 5 miles so I will just run in the afternoon.

Ran down to the local high school track (about a mile) and wanted to get a little track work in. The doc said I could do a little speed work and he stressed that, leaving me the famous works of 'don't be a knuckle head'  (and Kelli and Preston reminded me of that very same thing). SO what is safe? I figured just 4x400 repeats with 200 jogs would be fair enough. I knew I didn't want to go all out, but maybe just below 5k pace since I am sure my fitness is not where it was or I want it. Ok it was hot- 88 degrees and humid. Blah, and on the track I could feel the heat on my feet through my shoes. Splits 1:28, 1:29, 1:30, 1:30 and I am sure I could have thrown a few more in, however, mission accomplished and I feel for the most part fine. I really want that feeling to stay the same.

Another Sunday where I did not get up early... sooner or later I will have to learn this lesson. Hot, 94 and steamy. Did the half trail and half bike path again. My oldest daughter graduated yesterday. I had trouble when the video of the old pictures went by. I am very proud of her and she is a GREAT kid. adult. Kid. Yes kid. We have a wonderful relationship and never suffered any of the 'teen' issues most people complain about. I believe this is because of the relationship with God she has and partly the home school development. There were 37 home school kids at the graduation ceremony, it was quite moving. These are the most outgoing kids you will see... so much for stereotypes.

So yeah, I spent my run in the heat, sweating... yet just lost in thought... it was good.

How you liking those Hattori's? Carefull not to run too many miles in them even if they feel good. I think they were the leading cause of my worn out achilles. Now that's not blazing by any means but over a minute faster than feel with no effort. I would love to harness that. Maybe it was the fact that national running day falls on my birthday... Who knows.

Yeah, let's all pressure Dan since he lives in a swing state and his vote actually counts.

Good idea about entering a race. You could get a good feel as to where you're at. I haven't run one since May, mostly because SW Oklahoma is not really into running. If I was a noodler, then I'd have some competitions to talk about. In conclusion, vote for Burt for President!

So yes, I will be voting for Romney. Ohio is key... So many factors if you want to hear it, believe me I will share- It is critical that we spread the word as to why we need to vote.

So... It has been a bit of a roller coaster for me. I have been a horrible blogger. It is true that I have been extremely busy with work and was in Mexico for a work retreat the last 4 days, but just got home, but I have not been blogging or running like I should have been.

The reason is partly being down and not motivated. This is odd for me since I am an optimist by nature and I am used to lifting others up.  I cannot seem to get this quad area 100% healthy and it messes with my body and mind. I look at the past year and the 3 doctors, physical therapists that I have seen. Sure they have helped some, but bottom line it still bugs me (the injury). It has derailed many goals and races. I get sick at the amount of money I have spent on this treatment and yet still here it is. I have decided to push through it for now. I want to get the joy of running back. I figure if I just run and not focus on 'the next race' maybe that will help to just soak in runs and enjoy the trails. Then maybe I can get a running base back despite the pain that does re-occur. Don't get me wrong, it is no where as bad as a year ago or even 6 months ago, but still it hurts. I figure I will just have to deal with it or not run. I do not like the second option.

So there you have the basics of it, I fully plan on getting back on here and catching up. First let me get back and see my family when I get in :)

Your injury reminds me of Paul's "thorn in the flesh", it continually distracted him. He prayed that it would be taken away. Maybe this verse will help you:

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Ijr, Joe, thanks for the encouragement, and we share similar thoughts in overcoming. You guys are great!

From Hamdog Alum on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 17:16:20 from 71.87.124.223

I know what it's like to have nagging injuries. I ran through mine this year, but it was tough to deal with. I just took what the body would give and not fight it too much. Some days were better than others, but when it came down to it running with nagging injuries makes running A LOT harder. With that said, I will say that sometimes very light running can actually help heal injuries better than time off with no running. My theory is that the increased blood flow helps the injured area heal faster.

From Dan on Sat, Oct 27, 2012 at 08:44:09 from 24.209.83.20

Erik, it's tough. Thanks for the thoughts. I do agree active recovery ids almost always better than passive. It's just been a year and takes the wind out of you. I'm home, so hopefully I can recovery without a doctor since they haven't helped me get over this one yet.

Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving Dan! I recently bought the book ' Anatomy for Runners', you may want to check it out. While i have not been disciplined in applying the principles i am learning yet, it provides a great overview on mechanics of running & the stretching we need to do to stay injury free.

I am just now trying to get consistent again with my running, so today is the day I start implementing the the PF suggestions it offers ... Heres to hoping it helps ... I am quite sure it will with a better understanding of the dynamics @ work. Not the funnest reading, but lots of pics for when,my A.D.D. sets in! :)

Heres to a Happy & Healthy Holiday Season!

Yep, nice to see you logging some miles. Hopefully you can take advantage of the good days you get until that leg heals.

From Dan on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 10:56:53 from 24.209.83.20

Thanks guys- my miles wont be consistent, right now my goal is to just get out and run consistent even if the miles are not there. I do not know if it will ever go away, but for know I will take what the body will give.

OH, you KNOW I ate more than you. In fact, as disgusting as this is to admit, I weigh 9 pounds more than I did when i got up this morning. 9!!!!

I hope that you had a very Merry Christmas and I am glad that you are doing "better."

From Dan on Tue, Dec 25, 2012 at 20:12:46 from 24.209.83.20

Lol now that made me laugh. You got me by 3. Thanks for that and Christmas was indeed very merry. Missed our eating banter Kelli, hope you and the family are great!

From Kelli on Tue, Dec 25, 2012 at 20:32:30 from 67.172.235.55

Yeah, I do not blog much, work and life keeps me busy lately! And next year will be full time instead of part time so who knows when i will even run! But, no worries, I WILL find time to eat.

How is the injury coming along? For some reason I thought you were better. Was there a set back?

From Dan on Tue, Dec 25, 2012 at 20:46:24 from 24.209.83.20

Wow, full time, congrats! I know you though, you always find time to run :-) yeah, the quad area just won't heal right. At the point where I need an MRI, but just can't swallow the cost so I'm just running in pain/ache/annoyance/fine depending on the day.

Funny though, I still eat like I run :-)

From Kelli on Tue, Dec 25, 2012 at 20:57:37 from 67.172.235.55

The eating never stops.

I am sorry it is still bothering you. That is not fun at all. MRI's are ridiculously expensive! My husband had one to confirm his hamstring tear (or something like that) and i was VERY annoyed!!!!

From Dan on Tue, Dec 25, 2012 at 21:01:31 from 24.209.83.20

Thanks. I get annoyed because other than right after a marathon, I never got sick when I ran heavy miles. I've been sick twice this winter and bad flu once. I know if I was running like before I'd be fine. That's okay though, I know I'm very blessed and there is a reason behind it :-)

From SlowJoe on Wed, Dec 26, 2012 at 19:10:38 from 69.131.141.92

Dan, good to se you are to somewhat keep up the running. You definitely deserve some instant healing! Hope you had a merry Christmas.
