After we returned from the cabin, I took a short run on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, up to the 7 way intersection.  After feeling like the floor of a taxicab for several days, the run seemed like one bright spot.

AM-Radda run. It was a light crew, just 4 of us. I wasn't feeling great, only managed 7 miles. Had a good time talking with Casey after the run.

PM--A day of work and lots of tea seemed to help improve things.  I ran home from work for the first time this year, taking an extended route up Memory Grove to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, the Meadow, and then nose dived down through the Avenues to get home.  5.5 miles.

Still dealing with the cold/sore throat/chest thing that has bothered me all week.

We ran from Foothill with a hardy group of six or seven. It was raining extremely hard and we were all thoroughly soaked within five minutes. Casey and I managed to extend the run to the firehouse on 11th Ave. What the run lacked in length it made up for in precipitation. It was snowing by the end.

Well, I managed 25 miles for the week--a long time low. The illness took a lot out of me.

Feeling much better today.  All I could think about were hills as I was waking up, so I ran up the hilly streets in in the Avenues and Federal Heights until there were no more streets to run.  Popped out at the little trail that accesses the cement U and then connected with the Bonneville Shoreline trail for a bit before heading home through the University. Finally felt like a runner for the first time this year on the last, slightly downhill mile.

AM: A cold 18 degrees this morning, and icy.  Once again feeling much better and more recovered from the recent illness.  I planned to run the Ensign Elem loop, but missed a turn without thinking. So I ran a research park/guardsman loop.  A lot of traffic, stoplights, and ice, but I made the most of it.

PM:  I ran home from work, 2.25 miles.

AM:  fun "workout" with the Black Sheep.  We ran over to the golf course at the U and did surges on each fairway through the snow.  It's tough but invigorating. Then we played a big game of gang tag, which was definitely one of the more aerobically taxing things I have done in a long time.  All that added up to just four miles, so I added some extra at the end with a few folks.

AM:  8.25 miles with Josh, Megan and Amy in the snow.  We had about three inches of fresh snow, I would guess.  We ran up into City Creek, which was quiet and very pleasant.  On our way down memory grove, Josh and I were passed by a runner neither of us recognized (partially at least because he was wearing a balaklava).  We were just running easy pace, so no big deal, but that doesn't happen very often and we joked about it for a while.

PM:  I ran home 5 miles from Sugarhouse after work. I had to handle some car issues and it was easiest to run home.  Listened to the Bill Moyers conversations with Joseph Campbell on Lil' Trooper II.

AM:  Radda run.  The conditions were fairly good--still pretty cold. Kim, Lisa and myself ran a loop up through the school field to get some snowy running in--it wasn't easy. Lisa and I did a little surge at the end of our run and I am impressed with her speed.  She is planning to run Ogden and should run well if she trains consistently.

PM:  Ran home from work, stopped at Hatch Family Chocolates on 4th Avenue and E Street and bought two dark chocolate turtles for our dessert.

Heather and I were flying out of town early so I ran on my own this morning--I ran an icy loop out to Sugarhouse Park and back via the Country Club and Foothill Blvd.

Powell, Wyoming. We were visiting Heather's grandparents who had not yet met the baby.  They have about 80 acres of land and I ran around that, scaring a bunch of cattle along the way.

Out and back from the grandparents' house along a lonely road amidst virtually nothing.  It was as good as it could have been.

No time for speedwork with the Black Sheep this morning.  I ran the Ensign Elem. route, with 4 surges of between .5 and 1 mile, 6 min pace or faster.

Ensign elementary loop in 12 degree weather.  I was a little overdressed and overheated a bit.  Easy pace, that's all.

Easy run through the Avenues with Heather and Jack.  It was warmer, 32 degrees or so, and Jack enjoyed it (so did we).

AM:  woke up to a bunch of snow on the ground. I had planned to get in a decent run, i.e,  more than 8 miles, but after helping a woman try to get her car out of a snowbank, and generally trudging more than running in the snow, I had to cut it short.  I dipped down through the cemetery off of 11th Avenue. I came across two small deer herds, each about 9-11 deer.  I can't say I "chased" them, but I did sort of follow them around as I weaved my way down through the cemetery to 4th Ave. that was the highlight of the run.  Shoveled snow three times from the driveway before leaving for work.

Though an easy pace run, the run wasn't very easy; I was jumping snowbanks, dodging traffic, taking VPB stops, etc etc.  Oh, and it was really cold at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. However, that was my favorite part of the run.

Colder this morning, 12 degrees.  I have this Asics Thermopolis top--a light performance fleece with spandex underarms--that I picked up through St. George Running Center and it works great under my jacket; my core stays warm without overheating. Two layers of gloves, headband under hat, etc. One pair of tights is enough, though, my legs don't get very cold while running.

I ran around the U and then up past Ensign school, decided to detour briefly up onto the Shoreline trail for a visit to the meadow.  So I climbed and climbed and then ran a half mile or so on the snow,  with a great view, mostly quiet.

Back with the Radda crew for the first time in a couple of weeks. A few of us braved the canal route, which was kind of an adventure, but not too bad.  On Wander, Lisa M. and I ran a couple of spicy miles. She's training for Ogden and I'm trying to convince her that tempo runs are the key to success (as well as blogging, but she's not taken me up on that yet . . . ).

I'm leaving town this afternoon for the weekend so I wanted to run slightly longer today.  Twelve miles is slightly longer than 8 or 9, so that's what I did.  I don't know how much I'll get to run this weekend.

Anyway, it was an eventful run. While I was getting ready to head out the door I saw a deer walking down the sidewalk across the street (a fugitive from the cemetery herd no doubt).  While running, within the span of 3 minutes, I thought I had an achilles tear, turned my ankle, and fell to the ground after slipping on some black ice. I believe I don't have to worry too much about any of these, but we'll see.

I ran up into Emigration canyon. On my way down, I saw a huge buck elk with a big rack of antlers perched on the hillside. We waved at each other, said hello, etc.

The return run to home actually felt really good. For the first time in weeks and weeks I felt like I have some hope of regaining actual fitness at some point.

Ensign Elementary loop.  The temperature was great (almost 40), but the wind made it feel quite cool. I was dressed for 25 degree weather and felt fine. Aside from a few patches of ice, the conditions were very good. Nice to see some clear skies.

No running. Monday night I experienced a vicious battle with stomach flu/gastroenteritis.  It was ugly.  Didn't go to work Tuesday.

I felt good enough this morning that I thought I might try running again.  It was cold, 15 degrees, but clear and quite a beautiful morning.  For most of the run I felt pretty sluggish. I think my body is still only about 65%-70% recovered from the stomach flu.  The major stuff is over, but it seems like it's taking a few days to bounce back.
