Good luck with your training. It's nice to have another person from Arizona on the blog, even though I have no idea who you are or where you're from. You sound like you're pretty cool, and I bet you work at an office with the coolest guy in the world right next door to you, but that's just the vibe I'm getting. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Welcome aboard!! Now get Bethany to join :)

From walter on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 22:12:53

Welcome to the blog, was it Del Sol Relay that you ran? I did that one this past year and it is a great race.

From camilla on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 01:42:57

Welcome to the blog! I am pretty new too but I love this site, it is a good way to track your progress. I am also training for a half marathon in October and started on that not too long ago, so we are in the same boat! Good luck in your training and let me know how it is going :)

From Camille on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 14:23:18

Yes, Walter, it was the Del Sol I ran. It was awesome! Of course, I ran it quite slower than you did, but hey, I ran it!

From walter on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 14:59:01

You know its hot as hades right now there and you have to plan your runs accordingly but its opposite for us in the winter months. We have to plan our runs to combat the snow. So I am jealous of you runners down there during the cold times.

Del Sol is a great race and it doesnt matter that you ran it slower than me. I ended up running mostly in the dark anyway. But running that period is such a great challenge as well as fun. I would like to try the ones they have in the north west and oregon.

From Camille on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 15:08:30

Yes, I'm not jealous of your winter weather. I wish we had actual seasons here, but I'm not sad that it doesn't get miserably cold (that's for sure!). It looks like there are some good races coming up down here this winter. I'm really looking forward running in some of them.

From walter on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 15:28:15

I remember my first marathon I did in San Diego during the winter and it was 15 degrees with a horrible inversion in Salt Lake. I landed in S.D. and was blown away to see people out biking and running and rollerblading. I was soo freakin' jealous. Then I did R&R Arizona and loved it and Del Sol and I just love doing races down there and breaking away from the crap we have. Its almost impossible to run when it snows because the plows push it right to the white line and the drivers here suck. So You have to plan it out to run at 4am in 5 degree weather. Not fun! Lots of treadmill action

From Christina on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 12:21:29

Thanks for the comment yesterday! Good luck on the half marathon training--it was training for, and then running that race that got me hooked on the running bug again! Which one are you running?

Isnt it a great feeling when you have miles behind you early morning and dont have to dread the heat and other elements that get in the way the rest of the day? Nice job, so whats the temps in the morning there? like 90? our mornings are dipping down in the 50's and 60's right now. Its actually a little brisk at first.

From Camille on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 14:21:32

Yeah, it's in the 90's when I'm running (even at 4:30 am when I start). I'm looking forward to this fall when it cools down. I'm hoping that I will be able to run a little longer than. :o)

From walter on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 15:01:19

Thats why everyone and there dog has a pool down there! Its funny to fly into Pheonix and see so many pools! I admit Im envious when the weather breaks. Ill be down there running this winter, you mark my words.

From camilla on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 16:25:51

Too bad you didn't get a chance to serve! Those who want to go are usually the best missionaries we have! I got back in December of 2007 and I was in the spanish wards...wow they have some good food but it did major damage to my health. I have to lose about 20 lbs first to ever be competitive again in running. It will be interesting. But seriously, Sasha makes me feel like I can do it! Keep up the running! It took me 1 hour to run 5 miles last night, so don't feel too bad :)

From Matt on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 18:26:12

In that heat I think that is pretty respectable. Hopefully better weather is around the corner but personally I would be haeding for the treadmill

From Camille on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 19:19:02

I can't run on a treadmill. I have to be going somewhere. It seems I give up really easy if I'm on the machine.

From walter on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 20:25:12

Im with you there Camille! I have to put a towel over the mileage because its slower going. I actually dont mind doing a tempo run on them in the winter when I know I cant run fast outside.

Cross-training today on the bike.  I ride a mountain bike, so it takes quite a lot of effort to go fast.  Does that sound right, or am I just slow? (I was riding about 12 mph)

I went mountain biking for the first time a few weeks ago and it is so hard! I didn't think it was that hard, but it really is! Isn't it funny that people get us confused since I am Camilla and you are Camille? haha :)

From Camille on Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 13:32:41

It is definately harder than I thought it would be. I suppose I'll just have to keep at it and eventually I'll speed up. I think all these elite runners would fly past me on my bike like I were standing still. That's a little discouraging.

Yes, it is funny that people get us confused. Even worse, my dad re-married a woman named Camilla. It drives me crazy when they introduce me to people and they say, "oh, *you're* the other Camille". O-well. :o)

Get some mega doses of vitamin C going and hopefully you can shake it quickly. You know, you get extra points for running in AZ, imo. (Said she of cool, temperate Wash. state.) Take care.

From Camille on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 13:45:02

Thank you for the advice! Also, thank you for the extra points for running in Arizona. I just started running a month ago (in July), and was thinking (while running today) that hopefully this will get easier because eventually it won't be so hot! LOL.

From walter on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 23:43:59

gargle with salt water and call me in the morning! Extra points in the summer but we have to deduct all the quality miles you brag about in the winter. Dont want to hear it!

I need all the luck I can get at this point! I am taking 9 credits (until I get residency in the Spring) and have 2 jobs, plus running, plus anything else I have to do or want to do! Seriously you are doing great at running! Sasha is the one who inspires me to keep going, this morning I almost gave in to walking and there was a person in front of me who did and I thought "I can do more than her, I can train harder" and that kept me going and I did outrun her by a lot! So just keep going!! You are awesome!

good crud!!! There has to be something about Monday night to Tuesday early morning thart makes my little Melanie (8 month old) decide to keep me up.  I decided to go back to sleep when my alarm went off at 4:20 because I had been up since before 3 and have an important meeting to go to today.  Don't tell Sasha :o).  I can't run or bike after work because it's too hot to take Melanie out there, so I guess it's another cross-training Tuesday for me.

This morning there was a lightning storm, so I decided to hold off running until this evening.  I usually don't run at night, infact, I'm usually in bed by 8:30 pm, but couldn't run until Brandon (my husband) got home from mutual.  So, I left my house at 8:40 pm.  I ran 5.25 miles but made it home by 9:22pm.  I'm pretty proud of myself.  I knew I was doing good, but I didn't think I was going *that* fast.

Okay, off to bed!  Good night!!!

It was a little difficult getting out of bed this morning (since I went to bed about 1.5 hours later than I normally did last night, among other things), but I'm sure glad I did.  I did an 8.5 mile bike ride.  I was going to do 10 miles, but I got sick of sitting at a light and decided to turn rather than go straight.  I'm okay with that though.  :o).

This morning I decided to experiment with my gears a little to see if I could get in "the groove" while riding at a higher gear level, and I think I may have messed something up.  It's a good thing I'm married to a mechanic.  He might not be a bike mechanic, but that man can fix almost anything!  :o)

All in all, I think I kicked some tail. (LOL)  Now it's time to get ready for work.

You probably had your front gear in high and your back gear in low. You're not supposed to do that. The best thing is to keep your chain even so that it doesn't stretch it out.

From Camille on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 00:40:59

Okay, can you explain. Historically I have been riding with my left hand gear on 2 and then my right hand gear from 2 - 7 depending on what I'm doing (starting low and working my way up). So today I thought if I went to 3 on my left hand (which is the largest gear leve, on that hand), I would need to decrease my gears on the right hand to 1 and then move on up. Is that not right? My chain/gears were clicking. Not good. I can use all the help I can get.

From Burt on Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:02:20

If you hear clicking, that's bad. When your chain is on the largest gear in the front, you should keep them on the smaller gears in the back. See the following link:

http://bicycleuniverse.info/eqp/gears.html

(Link; no pun intended.)

Melanie and I went for a short run this morning.  It is a little hard to run with a jogging stroller, so I was slower than I normally am, but I'm okay with that.  (I think it added 2 mins to my time).  Melanie was a big hit when we ran past the local elementary school.  All the school children that were walking to school had to say hi to her.  I thought that was kind of fun.

The jogging stroller has a HUGE impact on pace for me, especially on the uphills! I can run a path 100 times by myself and think it is totally flat, and the first time I use a jogging stroller on it I notice tiny little hills EVERYWHERE! It takes a special kind of tough to run with a jogging stroller.

From Camille on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 22:53:49

Lybi,

You are totally right. I didn't realize how "hilly" my neighborhood was until I pushed that stroller. There are some good grade changes. It's hard to run one handed... I hadn't realized how much I needed to sway my hands when I run.

We went camping this weekend for my husband's birthday... but I still got my rear in gear and ran.  If we were in town, I would have ran close to 7 miles, but we were most definiately NOT in town.  I always knew that it would be harder running in higher elevations, but I didn't know it would kick my rear that much.  So, 4 miles it is.  And I'm lucky I could even do that.  It was definiately uphill... both ways... in the snow!!!

Today is my husband's 32nd birthday (happy birthday honey!) and to celebrate, we were still camping this morning.  He told me I better get up and go running or I'd be mad at myself later.  (He knows me so well!)  So, I did.  4 miles, 2 uphill, and then 2 down.  Man, uphill bites!  But uphill, in the mountains, in high elevation... yikes!  I'm pretty sure I'll be feeling that tomorrow.

I don't know if I was feeling "frisky" today, or the competitive nature in me jumped into gear, but I killed almost 15 mins off my time this morning.  Every time I bike I end up  sharing the road with two other bikers that always lose me :o(.  {They are on road bikes and I am on a mountain bike...  the physics just isn't on my side}.  Well this morning, one of the two bikers must have dropped something, so they both stopped, and I flew past them.  Then I spent the next 2.5 or 3 miles riding as fast as I could to keep my lead.  When I got to my turn, I looked back and saw them coming.  I turned and started heading up hill, and I got to a point where I thought I was going to have a heart attack (okay, maybe not that bad), so I looked back, and they were no where in sight.  I'm a dork, they must have turned the other direction, and here I was all parinoid that they were going to fly by me at anytime.   It's kind of funny, but I sure did get a good work out this morning.  :o)

It has been a heck of a day, to say the least.  My poor little girl woke me up moaning at midnight.  I didn't know that babies could moan like that.   Anyhow, she has the flu :o(.  No good!  So, I didn't run this morning, I spent all day with her.  I did do some kickboxing during one of her naps and cleaned my house  (it was pretty embarrasing).  After the hubby got home from mutual he took over and I went for my run.  (Melanie was already asleep, so he just "chilled").  He also timed me, and I'm proud to say that I ran my 3.1 miles in 25 minutes (give or take a few seconds because he forgot to hit the end button when I got back).  That's crazy!  And... i'm pretty sure I know what running on the sun feels like!  Yuck!  I can't handle the heat!  Back to morning running for me!

Wow nice times for a hot stroll in the desert! Not fun when your kids are sick! I remember the crupe, going outside and sitting on the patio in the porch swing and falling asleep. Our first daughter was always sick and had colic which I thought id never have another baby after her. It was difficult. Hope shes feeling better.

I ran later this morning than I normally do (leaving the house at 7).  I was actually surprised with myself for getting up.  My daughter is still really sick and spent all night last night crying in pain and throwing up.  It's aweful.  I don't there is anything worse than that helpless feeling when your kids are sick.  She is acting alittle better this morning, so hopefully she is getting better.

This morning's run felt really good.  I was going slow (about 9-1/2 min/mil), and I actually got passed by a little boy who was "cruising" to school on his bike.  That was kinda funny.  I'm glad I got up and ran.  There is something about running that makes you feel better about yourself.  :o)

Hey my sunny bunny friend! You are not supposed to let kids pass you on their bikes. Next time put a stick in their spokes. lol jk dont do that, you'll be in the papers for sure. Hope your little one is feeling on the up and up and its starting to warm up a little bit more here in coldville so I thought about you. Ill bet when its so hot out and you get a spell of rain and the temps drop to say 80, everyone gets a cold. Nice miles for today.

It is definately hot out there. The rain felt good... too bad it doesn't look like it's coming back right away!

From Lybi on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:29:56

What is your normal training pace? Now I am wondering if I can keep up with you. 9:30 is not slow to me!

You're totally right about running making you feel better about yourself. in College I remember seeing a study about people who were dieting alone and people who were combining diet AND exercise. Almost without exception the dieters only fell off their diets and the exercisers kept at it. Wonder if it is because of the endorphins.

From Walter on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:37:10

Back to running early again. I hate running in the rain, but if its hot out there I can imagine it would be nice.

Hey Piano lady, Im with you on that! I had mono a couple of years ago and just about got divorced because I was an honery A. If you can only imagine the exercise I was lacking. I got up to 140! Sheesh! Can you imagine? Everytime I saw someone out running I got mad and jealous and I would honk at them on purpose. Hey you jerk get off the road! lol Ok I didnt run them off the road but I wanted too.

From Camille on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:39:02

Aren't endorphins great?!?

Honestly, I train at whatever pace my body feels up to! LOL. I'm sure you would have no problem keeping up with me! So, I was thinking about you while I was running today. I was thinking that running barefoot probably helps with your pace when it's hot out. I was remember how when I was a kid we never wore shoes and would run as fast as possible from one grassy front yard to the next. LOL.

From Walter on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 13:41:55

Yeah Ill bet you guys got good at running from one yard to another. Feet of Steel!

From Camille on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 14:02:17

LOL Yeah. When I was a kid, I think I had hard feet. I walk through the small rocks in our front yard and it wouldn't phase me. It must have burnt all the feeling off them! I can't imagin going that now though...

From Camille on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 18:46:24

From Camille on Sat, Sep 06, 2008 at 19:34:54

Be careful what you ask for. This time last year, the principal of the local elementary school did just that. He went out for a run, everything was okay, and while he was untying (spelling?) his shoes, he passed away.

From Walter on Sun, Sep 07, 2008 at 23:47:40

I probably wont be so lucky to go out that way. But they better let him have those shoes. I told my wife to bury me in my PR shoes. That way I can come out running! lol

From Lybi on Mon, Sep 08, 2008 at 00:24:55

Bwahahaha! You guys are a hoot. I know I'LL be buried with my running shoes on because I run in my FEET! Fortunately, I don't have to risk the danger of bending over to untie my shoes though--so hopefully I'll be around to run a lot longer.

BTW, the sidewalk is cool during the early morning hours, but my treadmill gets HOT! Isn't that weird? I can't run more than 3 miles barefooted on the ol' treadmill because of it.

Thanks for the comments, I was just going crazy this week and I like to run, but school is and will always be my first priority since I need to get into law school after I get my bachelor's degree and Harvard doesn't give a degree in sprinting so I work hard on that too. Anyways, it looks like you had a great week! Sometimes I wish we could run together! It looks like we have almost the same times on races and stuff!

I live in Mesa, but I have seen some races on the events calendar that look good. I might take a trip down there. The race I want to do in February is the Sedona 1/2 marathon. I would like to do some others between now and then. I have a 5K next weekend and will be looking for more between now and then

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 16:41:48

I would recommend not altering your training at all prior to a race for the next 6 months at least. Otherwise racing becomes a form of untraining. Approach races as regular training runs. Your chances of injury on tired legs are often less than the other way around. You go out slower, there is less pounding, and your muscles remember how to deal with it from running earlier in the week. If you cut down, the muscles forget how to deal with pounding while your nervous system is fresh and anxious to push them into dangerous areas.

From Camille on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 16:47:47

Sasha - Thank you! I appreciate your help. Saturday is my first race for all (for the most part). I am curious what I should eat prior to the race (Night before or morning of) so I have fuel but don't get sick. Any advice?

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 18:16:50

Do not eat anything you normally would not. Eat something that has proven to give good results in training. Overall do not stress about the race. Think of it a regular training run with a crowd around you and a chance to meet people.

I had a great ride this morning.  It was just me and the rode... oh, and a few runners with dogs (that seems to be a fad).  I didn't see those two bicyclist this morning.  I like to think it's because I scared them away last week.  LOL  But it is more likely that I didn't see them because I was too slow to catch up.  (Darn!)

Can you say L-O-S-E-R?  I was up way too late last night and my body hurt way too much this morning, so I didn't get up.  Dang it!

I have my first race on Saturday, and next week I'm turning it on for the following 4 weeks because I'm going to run 100 miles in a month.  (I have a story behind it, if you are interested, let me know).  So, I guess I should run a few miles tonight to help me keep it going, but nothing too much, right?  How does that work?

Added...

I got out and ran tonight.  Brandon got home from work a little early to get his scout activity ready, so I was able to get out beforehe went to mutual (5:30).  It was a little warm, but not too bad.  I did learn a very valuable lesson though...  don't eat oreos withing 2 hours of running.  I almost tossed them a few times... bad!!!

I woke up a tiny bit late this morning, and so I shortened my bike route.  I thought I had shortened it by 4 miles (I typically ride 10 miles), and when I got home, I was so discouraged with my time.  35 minutes to ride 6 miles.  I was starting to think *I* could have run fast (not really... but it felt that way), but when I mapped it, it turned out that I had biked 7 miles.  5 minute mile.  It's still slow, but given the head wind I was fighting, and that I was on a mountain bike, I feel pretty good about it.  I hope everyone else had a good morning!

Okay, do I didn't take Melanie with me this morning, but this is a picture of my cute Melanie ready for a bike ride.  If that isn't inspirational, I don't know what is. :o)

***Added***

This afternoon (pre-dinner) Melanie and I decided to go for a short run.  I was inspired when I went out to get my mail (with Melanie in my arms) and she got super excited to be outside.  Since it isn't all that hot out, it was a good day for us to "hit the road".  Melanie clapped and gabbed the first two miles, but then started getting real tired.  That's when we decided to head home.

Well, it finally came... my first race!  I am pretty happy with the out come too!  So, here's the scoop.

I ran this race with a good friend (Bethany).  We were a little green around the ears, and put ourselves in a bad starting position (towards the back, in the middle).  We ended up having a pretty slow start because of it, but I think it was okay.  We talked the entire run (mainly about upcoming runs), so we probably could have run slightly faster, but given the course was pretty hilly, I don't think I would have run much faster.  Definately not without her there pushing me.  Bethany is awesome!  I really loved having her there.  At the end, she kicked it into gear and bolted to the finish line (she's a rock star).  I finished 4 seconds behind her.  I need to learn how to kick it up a knotch at the end like that.  I seem to have the opposite effect....  slow down approaching the finish line.  Bad Camille!

All in all, I feel really good.  Bring on the next race!

I remember my very first 15k I ran 5 years ago and I was so intimidated that I went back to the middle and I had to weave my way through the crowd and ended up in 20th place overall. Im pretty sure I wouldve done better. You did great! That is a good time. Pretty soon, youll be haveing goals like "Qualify for Boston, and top three in age" good job

We are going to run in the Rim County Challenge 1/2 marathon, in Payson. It's in 3 weeks. (yikes). I know I can finish it though. It's like Britta said, if I think I can do it, then I can.

From Camille on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 15:04:25

it isn't much time to prepare. that is why I was hesitant at first, but then I decided, why not? I have to up my mileage to get the 100 miles I need this month. I just need to make sure I don't injure myself. I was thinking maybe doing 8 miles in stead of 7 on Saturday to help prepare me for the 1/2 marathon. Any thoughts?

From Walter on Sun, Sep 14, 2008 at 18:29:26

Just try to not up your mileage more than 10-15% a week. Even I have fallen into the try and make up for lost time category and you get nasty nagging injuries.

Is that the same week as SGM?

Melanie and I were having a rough evening.  She refused to nap, and after listening to her cry for an hour, my patience was running thin... I let her play in the bath until she keep trying to stand up.  When I took her out, she was all tears and screams again.  so, I decided to take her for a walk and let her get outside.  Once outside, I changed my mind and decided to go for a jog instead.  It must have been an inspired idea, because as soon as we started moving, she was happy.  We did the 2.4 mile loop through the neighborhood/park, and then back to our house.  She was little Ms. Sunshine when we got home for at least on hour!  I should have done that hours ago!

I always am amazed at when I run with someone and tell them to keep running so I can do a potty break or what not and then try to catch them it takes almost a mile! Do you run with an Ipod or a getto blaster? lol

From Camille on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 21:34:27

LOL I don't think I followed your joke. Maybe I'm still slow.

From Walter on Mon, Sep 22, 2008 at 22:00:05

In the 80's a ghetto blaster was a portable tape player with large speakers that you could crank up and do your break dance moves! Yow! lol

From Camille on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 19:02:07

I remember those LOL... I guess it was the potty break thing that I didn't understand. But I listen to an Ipod (my b-day present from Brandon... so I'm still learning how to use it). And since we are on the subject of Music, I may have to take Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" off my play list because every time I get to that song, I whatever pains I have seem to be magnified. Apparently hearing "It burns burns burn" is not something you should hear while you are running. LOL

From Walter on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 22:20:49

That is funny! It burns it burns it burns. Youll have to sing that on your last few miles of the half marathon. I will try to remember to also in SGM! That is so hilarious.

From Camille on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 10:22:05

Thanks! I am still running in the 1/2 marathon. It's next weekend. I'm a little worried about the course, it's pretty hilly. I guess there is one aweful climb that lasts .5 miles, and then one downhill stretch that is equally as rough that lasts .67 miles. Yikes!

From Walter on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 17:39:02

Dang its the same time as SGM! I would come cheer you on if it were on a different day. Let me know if you need a place to stay! you can trash my house. Just leave money when done! lol

From Camille on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 18:59:10

Oops... I misspoke. (or misread really). My race is in Payson, ARizona, not in Utah. But I appreciate the offer. My husband was talking about the marathon in Saint George yesterday, but I informed him that I was already running in an event that same day.

From Walter on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 22:23:52

Well apparently they have two Payson's dont they! Lol See your husband is talking about SGM! You will run it next year. Registration is April 1st and thats not a joke! Remember my talk if you can run a 10k you can run a half marathon. Well if you can run a Half marathon, you can run a Marathon! See you in SGM next year baby! Rawesome!

From Camille on Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 10:47:13

April 1st. Wow, that must be a super popular race. I don't think I'll be participating though, as much as I'd love to. I'm hoping that by October of next year I'll be planning for a second Baby Smithson, and while I was pregnant with Melanie, the doctor did not allow me to run. :o(. Maybe this time will be different, but I guess it's always better to be safe rather than sorry.

From Walter on Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 20:30:29

Yeah, your pretty set when you find out your in that race. Its hard to get into. You know there is also the Canyonlands Moab half marathon in March that is popular but you have to register for it in November. Its on a lottery also and its scenic red rock canyon walls that you run through.

So your working on #2 already huh!? Nice, gives Melanie someone to beat up! lol

From camille on Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 22:51:15

Moab is a pretty area. There is a 1/2 marathon in Sedona, Arizona in February that is calling my name. That is a very pretty red rock area.

We aren't currently working on #2, but we thought that an early to mid 2010 baby would be nice. Me and my brother are 3-1/2 years apart and I think that is too far apart.

From Walter on Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 23:04:20

Isnt Sedona close to Del Sol relay? I havnt even looked at the date that Del sol is running. I am shooting for R&R in January though.

From camille on Wed, Sep 24, 2008 at 23:05:52

Yeah, it's 2 weeks before. I've been debating the R&R.

I didn't run at all yesterday, so I made sure I got up today.  I've noticed that in running, there are many opportunities to make decisions.  I can go left or right...  Today I choose what I like to pretend is the path less taken.  I chose to go the long way with every choice and it turned into 8 miles in the end.  I'm pretty happy with that.

Today I ran a new route.  I don't think I liked the route.  I doubt I'll be doing it again anytime soon (too dangerous, high traffic).  But, one thing I did like about the run today is there were some significant climbs.  I ran a little slower than I normally do, but it felt strong.

I'm now questioning if I should have ran so hard today with my race tomorrow (Lybi talked me into doing a 5K tomorrow...  okay, it wasn't too hard to talk me into it).

I forgot to post this yesterday...

From Camille on Sun, Sep 28, 2008 at 10:28:40

Montelepsy,

I'm running 100 miles in 4 weeks to raise money for my cousin. Her husband of 5 years was in an aweful car accident and passed away, leaving his 23 year old wife and 13 month old daughter. To make things even more sad, he had just finished serving in the army for the past 4 years (in Iraq and Afganistan), and she finally felt like he was safe. It's just aweful. Anyhow, I feel so helpless here, so I thought I'd do this to help her and Karlie out. So far I've had a really good response from everyone. And I'm thinking I may be able to get my 100 miles in 3 weeks, or 3-1/2 weeks.

Yesterday was a lot of fun. Not only did I get to run in the 5K, but I also got to meet Lybi and James, who are both wonderful people. James was extremely helpful getting me ready for the race, and Lybi was a total rockstar, both before the race coaching me, and during the race. (I think anyone who runs barefoot when everyone else is looking at her like she is crazy is awesome.) So, here is my run down of the race:

First, I have to admit, I was extremely late. I'm so happy I got there before the gun went off. I can't believe how late I was. Brandon, Melanie and I jumped into the car about 10 mins later than we planned on, with a map in hand, but unfortunately the map didn't account for road closures. :o(. Thank you James for giving us quick directions when we were close to the race. We appreciated it! I felt so guilty being late while Lybi was waiting for me. So embarrassing. Lybi, I PROMISE I will be on time next race.

Before the race, Lybi and I went for a run to warm up. I appreciated the warm up run because I had an awful pain in my right leg when I woke (to the extent that I was limping while getting ready in the morning) and I think the warm up run helped it. While warming up, Lybi asked me what my goal was. My only goal at that point was to finish faster than 29:30 (and beat out my last race). I told her my husband's goal for me (25 min... ha ha ha). And she said that she thought I could do it in 27. She told me to run as hard as I could at the start, and then when I got to mile 2, run faster. I've never had anyone coach me (ever) for a race, so I really appreciated it. (I told you she was a rockstar!).

When the gun went off, unfortunately, my music didn't start. I started running hard, pacing myself with Lybi, but it was hard without any music. (There is this nasty voice in my head that tells me I can't do it, or to slow down... I have to drown that voice out with music). I tried to hum my own music, but it didn't work very well. I slowed down and tried to fidget with my music to get it to work, with no luck. At that point, I paced myself with a woman that was running next to me.

At the 2 mile mark, my music finally clicked on. (Thank goodness), but at that point, I wasn't running as fast as I could have (sorry Lybi, I didn't follow your advice). I was being passed by everyone (even some girl that was using an inhaler). I just had to stop paying attention to everyone else and get past that finish line.

When I passed the finish line, I could hear Lybi screaming for me. That was awesome. I had to pass the finish line like I was the winner, with my arms in the air. Made me feel special.

I haven't had a chance to download my photos from the race, so if you want to see a before and after picture, you'll have to check out Lybi's blog (http://lybi.fastrunningblog.com). All in all, I finished in 27:23 (based on the chip). I'm very happy with my time, and I think I may be able to beat it in the future. We shall see.

Edited to add a picture!

Good morning everyone! :o).  Today the evil personality of my daughter woke me up.  (The one that screams bloody murder and is completely unconsolable).  Brandon (such a sweetheart) told me to go jogging and he would take care of her.  Wasn't that sweet?  So I set out for 5 miles, feeling pretty good (though a little sore).  About 3 miles into my run, the batteries on my music died (I'm not having good luck with music these last few days.)  Well, I just made my own music (thank goodness people can't hear me singing in my head.  LOL).

LOL They can, you are right. But I still had my earphones on, so maybe I didn't look so crazy. Who knows. I'm sure to some people, seeing someone running at 5 am *is* crazy.

I'd like to do one, eventually (though I'm afraid I may drown), but the reason I have this setup is because before I was running for my cousin, I was biking every other day, and I wanted to record my biking miles. :o)

What's your miles left count down for, (if you don't mind me asking?)

From Camille on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 10:42:24

Kim - Thank you! It was a fun race!

My count down is to a 100 miles because I'm donating 100 miles in 4 weeks for my cousin Nicole. See, her husband passed away after a car accident over Labor Day weekend, leaving her and her 13 month old daughter. It was really tradegic, unexpected, and not at all quick. She lives far away (Missouri) and I feel so helpless over here in Arizona, so I decided if I donated 100 miles to her and Karlie, and got pledges for my miles, I could raise money for her to help her get on her feet. That's my plan, and so far it's been really good.

Camille, one other tip for saturday when you get tired and feel like walking or slowing down. tell yourself you are a gazelle, or a cheetah and try to maintain a comfortable pace. Push yourself mentally. I have a huge problem with this and when my heads in the game its a whole lot better.

From marion on Tue, Sep 30, 2008 at 18:50:13

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles
13.500.000.00

Before anyone judges my time... I want to point out two things:  1st, this was my first ever 1/2 marathon, and 2nd, this is what it says as a description of the course (from the website)

"This Half Marathon course is not flat and fast so don’t expect to set any speed records.  It is called the Rim Country Challenge for that reason.  It starts and ends at Green Valley Park.

Due to the hilly terrain this race will challenge you as a runner.  It should be great training for marathons.

There are two significant hills. One is called “The Challenge"; Paysonites call it Airport Hill.  It is .45 mile long with an elevation gain of 165 feet.  The other is Vista Road with an elevation drop of 210 feet in .64 mile.

The majority of the course is undulating and runs its way through residential and scenic views of the Town of Payson."

Okay... now I feel justified in my 2:21:50 half marathon (which I'm sure is slower than some of your marathon times!).  Ready for the report?

I ran the race with my friends Bethany and Burt.  (Burt also has a blog on the fastrunningblog, you can find him in my favorite blog list).  Here we are feeling strong before the race.

Bethany and I stayed together for the entire race, but Burt left us like we were standing still.  We started with a solid 9:45 min/mil pace, which we kept for the first 4 or 5 miles.  The race started by going up hill...  and more up hill... and I'm not kidding by saying that the first 11 miles were predominately uphill.  There were some flat spots and the rare down hill... but mostly up.  By mile 11 I was starting to lose hope.  I couldn't understand how in heavens name we could start and stop in the same place if we don't go DOWN!  Finally we went down hill, and I think we did all the down in at once because we ended by going up hill.  I swear when I found out I had to go up another hill to finish I was going to scream.

Oh, side note, by mile 8 we could see Burt.  We had decided that if we caught up to him we were going to thank him for waiting for us.  In the end, he totally kicked our butts. :o)  It was neat that we came into the finish line in order though (Burt, me, Bethany!)

Here is an after shot!

Okay... now I have to tell you about my hero who also ran on Saturday, but in the 5K.  My husband is awesome!  He doesn't run.  No training of any kind.  Well, when I asked him if I could sign up for the 1/2 marathon (because I wanted his support), he asked me to also sign him up for the 5k so that he and Melanie would have something to do while we waited.  Well, he totally kicked butt in the 5K (which also was not flat or easy).  Pushing Melanie, he came in 9th overall and 2nd in his age group, finishing in 25:05.  Here is a picture of Melanie and Brandon getting their metal.

And finally, I have to give a special thank you out to my cheer team!  My Dad and his wife just moved to Payson and came to watch, along with Brandon, Melanie, and Bethany's husband Nate.  Thank you for coming!  You are all awesome!  Here's Melanie and my dad's wife (Cam).

Great job for your first half---you will get faster from here and that was an awesome start!

I love all of the pictures in the post, that is so much fun and helps to tell the story!

Look at that little pumpkin! Uber-cute!

What a tough race for your very first half, Camille! You are soooo awesome to even consider doing it for your first time. It is at altitude, it is hilly, and it's just plain a mean ol' course. Way to teach it a lesson.

Holy smokes about your husband. I told you he looked like a runner! And pushing a jogging stroller? Man, that makes the hills double! Tell that dude I told him to GET ON THE BLOG. He's a natural!

From Camille on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 10:16:47

Thank you!!! You guys are great! I don't think I could have done it without everyone's support. :o)

Lybi - I think my husband has sworn off running for a little while. He is in a lot of pain. He wants to do another one without pushing Melanie to see how he fast he could do it. He says maybe November or December. Do you have any racing plans coming up? You got Burt's email about the ragnar, right?

From walter on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 11:16:41

Very nice first half! Sounds very challenging. Good to see you accomplish so much in a sort time! You know the saying if you can run a half, you can run a full marathon?! lol So are you ready?

From Camille on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 19:20:31

Walter - It was a challenging course, but definitly fun. I'm so glad I did that. I'm ready to do another half, but I'm not sure about a full.

From walter on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 19:33:19

The Moab half is always fun and of coarse the R&R Arizona half is popular! Moab is in March.

From Camille on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 19:55:41

I have thought about the R&R, but I'm afraid to admit, I'm agoraphobic, and I'm afraid that the crowd may be too much for me. I have a neighbor that is thinking about doing it, and she may talk me into it. We will see.

Moab is dangerous because that means I'll be required to go 4-wheeling afterwards. There is no way that my husband will agree to go up there if I don't agree to explore afterwards. LOL. :o)

From walter on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 20:07:19

Isnt that when your afraid to go outside? lol I dont know. It is a fun run and though crowded, the atmosphere rocks!

You know every year we go to Moab with our atvs and spend the weekend there. Last year we took our neighbors who dont run at all but had their motorcycles and atvs ready to go the minute we crossed the finish line. When I crossed the finish line they were asking me when my wife was going to come through. When I told them in an hour or so they flipped! But were patient. Try going back to a hotel room after a half, showering and changing quickly to go exploring. It was actually fun. Very packed in two days.

From Camille on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 20:42:22

Over labor day weekend, my 23 yr old cousin (Nicole) last her husband in a tradegic car accident. It was pretty sudden and very sad. Western (her husband) not only left Nicole behind, but also his (then) 13 month old daughter. I felt aweful that I couldn't make the funneral or do anything to help her because she lives so far away. So, I decided to help her get on her feet, I would dedicate 100 miles (between Sept 15th and Oct 15th) to her and her daughter. During this time, I have been extremely lucky to get pledges on my miles to help her financially. I can't believe how supportive and generous people are. :o)

I got up this morning, heading out back... got all ready to ride my bike... jumped on and.................

FLAT TIRE!  Can you believe that?  I haven't touched my bike in 3 weeks. Go figure.  So, instead, I went for a run.  It was a great run too.  I pushed myself to go fast, but not too uncomfortable.  I'm pretty happy with it.

Anyone have any pointers on how to increase my 5K speed?  I'm running a 5K on November 8th and would love to cut my time by a minute or so.  My husband says he thinks I can do it in 25 minutes and it would be really cool if I could.  But I for sure want to run a sub 27.  Any advice?

I used the smartcoach tool from runnersworld.com to train for my marathon. You input a recent race time/distance; what you're training for; how many weeks you've got to train and the effort you want to put in.

It comes up with how fast (or in my case, how slow) to do your speedwork, tempo runs, long runs and easy runs. I was running 11 miles a week when I started and after sticking to the smartcoach program in 16 weeks I ran a marathon.

It had me run twice a week, with 21 miles being the most per week and the longest run being 15 miles.

I was pretty skeptical until it worked out.

From Teena on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 13:19:19

Camille, sounds like you had a GREAT run this morning and are on the right track. I am no expert on 5Ks (or anything else for that matter) but for me I like to push myself pretty hard at the tail end of a run one or two times a week. Sometimes that means running hard the last mile or so, but sometimes it was as simple as running the last 1/10th of a mile in "puke zone." Just find out what works for you. Are you keeping track of your pace at various distances throughout the week?

From Camille on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 13:36:25

Mike - I'll have to check out the smart coach... great idea. Thanks.

Teena - No, I'm a total loser and don't have a watch or anything to use to pace myself. I need to get on the ball and get one. I have been using the time on my ipod to get a rough idea of my time, but it's not that accurate (no seconds). I like your idea of running faster at the end of your runs. I have been practicing my kick (or speeding up to get to the finishline). I noticed today that I was running what felt like my original kick speed for the entire run. (Let's just say my original kick speed wasn't too fast). It's amazing how my body just knew to kick it at the 1/2 marathon last weekend. I didn't mentally tell myself to speed up, I just did.

From Camille on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 13:36:44

talk about rambling. I hope some of that made sense.

From kungfublonde on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 14:57:31

Camille, your "totaly loser" comment cracked me up because 1. no you're not! and 2. I feel the same way! I have a watch and have no idea how to use it. So what I've ended up doing is sending mmyself a text when I pass certain markers, so when I get home and map it I can see where I was at what time.

How's that for dorky approach?? Although I think I get at least 2 MacGuiver points for being creative :)

From Camille on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 14:58:51

I have two teenagers- I can text without looking, or even slowing down :)

From Lybi on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 15:23:46

Hey Camille--out there running already! Man you are tough.

You know what really helps me in a 5K is to wear a Garmin. (Do you have a Garmin? You can borrow mine if you need to for the race.) It has a function that tells you what your average pace is.

When I am going for a specific goal, I figure out what my average pace needs to be. Then when I'm running I check my watch every once in a while. If the pace ever gets above my goal pace, I pick it up! It's a great motivator for me. I really missed it this last race.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 16:37:05

I would recommend a $10 Walmart watch. In combination with the Course Tool on the blog, for $10 you can get more accurate numbers for your pace than with any other much more expensive but possible to run with device (short of running with a measuring wheel).

From Camille on Wed, Oct 08, 2008 at 19:07:42

Kungfublonde - hilarious! I have seen teens text with their phones in their pockets. It's crazy. I feel like an old woman while I'm trying to send a simple "Dinner's at 6" message to the hubby. It takes me forever.

Lybi - No, I don't have a Garmin, but that explains alot. At our race, I thought you were asking me if I had my garment. LOL I thought that was a weird question to ask someone. Speaking of races though, did you get my email about the 5K that I really want you to run with me? Also, did you get Burt's email about the Ragnar? I am so excited that you are running it with me!

Sasha - I must be missing something. I don't see the Course Tool. Does it have Arizona Courses in it?

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 14:42:58

Camille - you have to plot your own courses on the Course Tool. If you need help to figure it out, and do not have a resident geek, post on the forum.

Regarding increasing 5 K speed. Just keep running 6 days a week without skipping. You still have quite a bit of room for improvement in the aerobic department.

Kelli - 40 degrees doesn't even sound fun to me. But it's a trade off... we get miserable summers. It's just now starting to cool off.

From Kelli on Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 14:12:35

I could never do the summers there. NEVER!!! My sister lives in Phoenix and I just do not know how she does it!

Hey, we are coming in February to run the Ragnar Del Sol (somewhere in Mesa to somewhere in Phoenix, I think). How will the weather be then?

From Camille on Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 17:04:27

I am also running in the Ragnar! It should be a ton of fun! And we should have nice weather. The first year we had the Ragnar here, the did it the lastweekend of March and it was extremely hot. I'm glad they pushed it forward.

From Kelli on Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 17:12:12

Okay, then, we will have to meet up somewhere. The blog has a super fast team (they won last year) and then there is US. We have 1 fast runner, and the rest of us are in it for fun. My kids will be at my sisters, so we are making a family trip out of it.

Hey, I am van 2. Tell me which legs are easiest!!

From Camille on Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 17:18:41

I've only done it once (I just had Melanie before the race last year), so I've only ever been in van 1. I think I'm in van 2 this year, and I'm thinking runner 8 has it the easiest.

We will definately have to meet up. I think a post Del Sol party is a must. Our team is just doing it for fun. I know there is one guy that is extremely fast, and then everyone else is faster than me. I am definately the slowest person on the team. (I hope they don't vote me out because of that).

From Kelli on Fri, Oct 10, 2008 at 17:20:08

I think you HAVE to do this race for fun---otherwise it STINKS!!!! Literally.

What is the Ragnar?

From Camille on Sat, Oct 11, 2008 at 10:03:28

It's a big relay race. 181.7 miles, 12 people, 24 hours. The 12 people drive in 2 vans. Each person has 3 legs of the race varying in miles and difficulty bettween 2 - 8 miles. The race doesn't stop, so you pretty much don't get any sleep.

I'm a LOVING the weather!  For everyone that has enjoyed great weather for the last few months and want it back, forget it... LOL  I'm being selffish and don't want to give it back.  It was nice to have my window open today :o).  Okay, I'm done rubbing it in!

I went for a long run today, and after 8 miles, I ran past a friend's house.  This particular friend has been really busy and hard to pin down, so when I saw her out front gardening, I decided to stop and talk to her.  She is pregnant with number 5 and has been sick, so I like to check up on her.  (Plus, I don't have too many friends... definately not enough to start "miss placing" them).  So, I sacrificed the other 3 miles I was going to run, but in the end, it was worth it.

Oh, and today my mom taught me how to sew as we were sewing Melanie's Halloween costume.  We have one more thing to sew (the hat).  She is going to be the cutest Strawberry Shortcake ever.  Sewing is actually fun.  Maybe I'm going domestic. :o)

I didn't get much sleep last night.  Someone, who shall remain name less but is roughly 27" tall and weighs approximently 17 pounds, woke up at 11:53pm and cried for 20 before I decided to go get her.  (she usually goes back to sleep).  I rocked her back to being calm (which was nice because I got to snuggle with her, and those momments are far in between since she has been able to move) and then put her back into bed.  Then she decided to cry for an additional hour before she ended up in mom and dad's bed.  Yep... Its funny, they had some good runners from Bingham High School last year who werent even in the stake and I thought they were going to waste me so I started out as fast as I could, my first mile was 4:50 and I knew I couldnt hold that pace but I wanted to see if they would burn out before me and they did. I beat the fastest one by 12 seconds. He faded worse then me. I did a 5:45 2nd mile and then a 6:15 3rd mile. Funny huh? If I would have paced off of them they would have creamed me.

Good morning!  It is beautiful out today.  I was watching the news this morning though, and they predict it will be in the 90's this weekend.  So much for my beautiful weather.  I hope that means my friends in Utah will have some good weather though. :o)

I almost didn't get up this morning.  I could have used the cute baby up at midnight excuse again, but I decided that would be lame to pull that twice in one week.  Plus, in a way, it was my fault she was up at midnight.  So, instead I decided to get out of my bed and hit the pavement.  I did 5 miles because of time.  When I told my husband I ran 5 miles he said I'm getting faster.  That made me feel good. :o)

I'm slightly concerned that I'm not eating enough to compensate for my running and for nursing (I'm still nursing my little girl and plan to for another 2 months).  Anyone have any advice as to how much of what I should be eating.  I think I've lost too much weight too fast.  If I weren't nursing, I wouldn't be complaining... but I'm concerned about Melanie.

Melanie is probably fine. She is ready for solid foods and nursing is still very important but not her only source of nutrients. In a couple of months she may be only nursing morning and night for comfort and a snack. You are a good Mom..just watch and see if she seems hungry or grouchy and then you'll know she may need more from you.

I always lose a lot of weight around 9 months. As long as you aren't starving yourself or anything crazy like that you are probably fine.

From Camille on Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 11:55:28

Thanks Sarah. That makes me feel a little better. She is eating solids, so I know that she isn't starving. I'm just one of those overly concerned first time mommys.

From Snoqualmie on Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 12:11:19

Hi Camille,

I think you get extra points for running in Arizona. Hats off to you. I like cold myself, so I'm amazed when I hear about folks who run year round in temperatures I find intolerable. Bravo!

I just want to give you any encouragement I can to nurse as long as you can. It is so wonderful in so many ways! I'm sure you already know that, but there isn't a lot of encouragement in the main stream so I'll put mine in where I can. You are her hero every day by continuing to nurse!

If you feel you need to eat more, I'd concentrate on protein and veggies. That will keep you both healthier without some of the damaging effects of too much simple sugars. I know the typical runner's diet is carbs, carbs, carbs, but I am living proof that this is not necessarily the right way to eat. When I switched to a more produce-dominated diet I was able to raise my mileage to the 50's (miles per week) and had much better energy throughout the day. A good book for eating this way is The Garden of Eating by Matesz. (http://www.thegardenofeatingdiet.com/) Just my 2c but I feel great since I've made the switch. For carbs, I rely mostly on fruit (dried and fresh) and root vegetables.

Good luck with your little angel and your running. :)

From sarah on Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 12:39:07

I'll second the vote to nurse a long time..I stop when I'm pregnant with the next baby joy. I'll also second the protein vote. I need meat, dairy and legumes and love them..yum!

I think you are a wonderful first time Mommy. I used to worry about everything too and I think that's normal..it gets you curious and interested in learning what's best for your child. Who complains about losing too much weight too fast? WOW!!! You are a good mommy! I would be kidding that nursing baby every second for the weight loss help!

My 2 cents, according to weight watchers rules, is that a 5 mile run might mean you need about 200 more calories is all. An extra snack or two! Add a nice smoothie---protein and fruit in one.

I woke up with an aweful pain in my calf.  It feels like it's tight, not like I pulled anything.  I think I'll run this afternoon (after work).  I'm hoping that all the walking around I do at work will help loosen it up.  Does this happen to anyone else?  What do you do?

All I know is that my daughter had a really tight calf muscle from ballet over the summer, and it ended up leading to a serious ankle injury. I can't explain this very well, but your ankle receives a lot of support from your calf muscles (it has to do with the way they attach and stabilize your ankle), and when that support is compromised, you are more susceptible to an ankle injury. So no trail running until your calf feels better!

From Camille on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:02:44

That is very good to know. I was thinking of places to run this weekend (Friday and Saturday) and some trails were coming to mind. I'm glad that you gave me that warning. Hmm... should I be stretching it better? (my calf). I'm nervious now.

From kungfublonde on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 12:16:07

Maybe some real runners will chime in and give you more knowledgeable advice, but I wouldn't worry. Just stretch and do easy runs until it feels better. Or bike?

From Lybi on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 14:42:59

My hubby gets tight calves ALL the time to the point of not being able to run, and it is usually up to me to fix it. (He has stretched and stretched, and it has never done anything to make it better.) 2 Things that DO work: scraping and releasing.

First try releasing (you might want to have your hubby do this). You massage the calf until you locate the absolutely most tender spot--usually it feels like a lump. Sometimes the pain of it when you press on it feels like it radiates up your leg, or down to your foot. That's good. That means you are in the right spot. So the goal is to press straight down on the most tender spot and hold it for about 30 seconds. While you are going crazy and trying not to scream about it, flex your toes up (this will be difficult). This will stretch the calf and force the knot to release. Then let go and find the 2nd most tender spot and do the same thing to it. Etc. etc. It sounds brutal, I know--but it is very effective. If you only have 10 min. you can make a BIG difference with this stuff. I can show you on Sat. before we run. Scraping is...dah, it takes too long to type. I'll show you.

OH! AND James and I can NOT run that race on Nov. 8th. I knew there was something...my oldest's son's baptism! This is a big deal to us and family is coming from out of town and everything, so it's a no-go. So sorry!

From kungfublonde on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 14:47:24

The releasing thing is exactly what Amanda's physical therapist was doing. The best I could think to say was "massage it." Der.

Go Lybi!

From Camille on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 14:49:27

Lybi - That sounds painful... but I'm sure it's worth it. :o(

You are hilarious. Yes, your son's baptism is a BIG deal. You have no reason to be sorry... there will be more races, but he only gets baptised once (hopefully). Have fun that day with your family and friends. I'm trying to think if I know any good cakes to make for a baptism. (sorry, cake decorating brain at work). Are you guys doing a family get together, dinner thing afterwards?

From Camille on Thu, Oct 16, 2008 at 14:52:23

oh hey, Lybi... my friend Bethany (who is running the Ragnar with us) wants to go running with us Saturday morning. Is that okay with you?

From Teena on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 00:15:03

Camille --

Sorry to hear about your calves. Hope that the walking, etc. helped.

I'm anxious to hear how the scraping and releasing works for you.

Hope you are having a wonderful night!

From montelepsy on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 00:30:40

You may have muscle imbalance, so another thing you might try is getting the opposing muscle group to your calves stronger.

Try standing with your feet shoulder width apart, then place one foot about a half step forward. Lean forward and place your hands on your forward knee and tap your foot for 30 sec. Switch. This also prevents shin splints.

Brandon was a sweetheart last night and rubbed my calves.  He must not have been as hard as I thought he would be because I feel asleep :o).  This morning they felt much better.  They are still a little swore, but nothing like yesterday.  Thank you everyone for all your advice.  I'll have to do some of the exercizes that everyone reccomended yesterday to help prevent further pain.

This morning I hit the pavement and went 7.25 miles.  The first 1/2 mile was very awkward.  I don't know why, but I felt like my stride was not right.  After that 1/2 mile it felt great.  Brandon says I'm getting faster.  I'm still slower than most of the other people on this blog, but I ran my 7.25 miles at a 9:30 min/mile pace.  He is so sweet for telling me that I'm getting faster.  It made me feel like I was accomplishing something.

Okay, quick story:

While we were visiting my dad, Melanie was playing with this blocks.  My dad decided to take a nap on the living room floor.  He was sawing some serious logs and scared Melanie.  Melanie decided to investigate the noise, and crawled up to my dad.  She looked at him, looked at Brandon, looked around, and then looked back to her Grandpa.  It looked like she was going to claw his face or something.  Then all the sudden she pulls out a block that apparently she had carried over with her, and shoves it in Grandpa's mouth.  Smart girl, she stopped the scary noise instantly. LOL

From montelepsy on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 11:03:49

It'll take more than a block. Maybe a brick will work. Or a backrub. A backrub would definitely make me stop snoring. And brownies.

Melanie's super cute.

My calf is doing much better. It was killing me on Saturday (after we met) and Sunday, but yesterday it felt a ton better. But... I think I have either pinched a nerve or thrown my shoulder out! OUCH!!! My right shoulder/arm is in serious pain... as is my neck and head.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

No running for me this morning.  I'm planning on taking Melanie this afternoon.  I have either pinched a nasty nerve in my right shoulder/arm/neck/head (all of those are killing me), or I have dislocated it (the shoulder).  I haven't been able to kick this headache for the last 24 hours.  But, on a positive note, Melanie must have realized my head hurt because she was an angel last night.  :o)

*** Added:  Melanie and I just finished 3.5 miles.  We ran to Red Mountain Park, ran around it 3 times (sharing the park with the Red Mtn HS Cross Country Team), and then ran home.  It was freaking HOT.  90 degrees! yuck!  I had to come home, it wasn't fair to Melanie to stay out much longer.  But she did have fun.  She was clapping and making happy noises.

How did you hurt yourself? Did you dislocate your shoulder in an arm wrestling competition; swinging on vines like Tarzan or tossing and turning in bed?

From Lybi on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:03:14

Oh I am so sorry! Yeeouch! Are you going to be able to get to the Dr. today? I was thinking of asking you for Bethany's chiropractor's number because I had a kinda similar thing happen on Sunday. REALLY tight and painful shoulder, neck, and probably the worst headache I've ever had in my life. (Are we just really in synch, or are headaches contagious?)

Rubbing it out and releasing the tight knots has helped. My poor hubby has been spending at least half an hour on it every day.

BTW I can tell you now that the Sat. long run is not going to happen for me this week. I've hurt my foot somehow and it is REALLY sore, even if I just walk on it.

From Camille on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:09:59

I have no clue how I hurt myself. Maybe I slept on it funny. Brandon thinks it's from holding Melanie. I usually hold her with my left arm though. I do hold her with my right arm if she is in her carseat/carrier thingy, but that's maybe once a day for me (picking her up from the sitters). The Tarzan thing sounds like more fun.

Brandon cracked my back (gently) yesterday in hopes that he could remedy the problem. It helped a little bit, my back felt better (I didn't even know it hurt until then), but not my shoulder. I hadn't thought about going to a dr. though. I'm a Dr. whimp.

From marion on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:57:09

For that type of thing, I used to NEVER go to the Dr. until I "broke" ny neck in Yoga one day. I went to the chiropractor and I was better SO fast- like hours. I really recommend it! It's not from holding the baby :) GEt brave and go. You'll be glad you did. :)

From kungfublonde on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:59:11

From marion on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 12:21:33

The first time I went it made me sick too. Now I love it, but I go for specific injuries. If you can find a good sports medicine chiro, you will be VERY happy! Take Rachels advise- don't wait too long. ;)

From Camille on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 14:55:32

Marion - I hate to say "I'm glad you got sick from the chiro", but I am happy that I'm not the only one who has had that experience. It makes me feel a little more normal. Brandon has promised me a massage from a local massage theorpy place that I (for reasons that I can't explain) haven't taken him up on yet. Perhaps I'll take him up on it now and see if that helps.

From marion on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 15:11:47

Hello Everyone! So, I was really bad and didn't run at all today.  I got up a little late (5:30 am), and felt like someone took a bat to my body.  I think my arm and shoulder actually hurt more today after my appointment than yesterday.  Not good.  I heard a loud pop earlier today, and it's been really bad ever since.

When I got home, I made these (for a church fall festival):

Last year I didn't do anything special with my cupcakes, just vanilla frosting on top, and not a single one was eaten.  This year, they were gone in 5 minutes.  Picky kids. :o)  Actually, it's probably a good thing there weren't any left for me.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:13:56

I am, but those cupcakes will not be good by then! You will have to make some new ones.

BTW, when I hurt my heels (blisters usually) I just wear a very cushiony bandaid and it usually is okay to run. OWY, though!

From Camille on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:30:52

These cupcakes didn't make it to today. Unfortunately, I didn't even get to try one. But, I was thinking that if we had a post Ragnar Party, I might make some goodies (depending on how much time I had leading up to the Ragnar).

Yeah, I have a pretty cushiony bandaid on right now. What you don't see (because I didn't take a picture of it, is that I cut up both of my big toes (really bad) and it pretty much hurts to stand. I'm being a baby though and will be back on the pavement in no time.

From montelepsy on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:36:32

How'd you get all your cuts? Is there something we don't know about you? Is Brandon a circus knife thrower and you are his lovely target? Were you kickboxing dagger wielding bandits? Are you chapped because you forgot to moisturize?

From Camille on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:38:43

I like the Kickboxing dagger wielding bandits. I'll go with that!

From Camille on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:41:25

But the honest reason. I am barefoot at home 99.9% of the time, and we are renovating our garage into a room. Anyhow, I went into the garage to put the lovely cupcakes you see above into the fridge (we have a fridge loaded with Brandon's year supply of sodas in our garage), and stepped on a screw and cut my heel on the door. It was lovely. We had just cleaned up in there that morning, so it was kinda of a freak accident.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:46:13

I was wondering if I had missed the story on how it happened! I never wear shoes, either, but I am less accident prone! ;o) My neighbors love when I run out to the mailbox in the snow in bare feet becasue I am too lazy to put on shoes! But my feet make such cute prints in the snow.

From Camille on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:49:20

I figured since everyone else had their gorey pictures on their blogs, I needed mine to! LOL. But you did hit the nail on the head, I am pretty accident prone.

I also run out to get the mail barefoot, and in the summer, when the pavement is about 120 (+) degrees, that could be considered out right stupid. And it doesn't make cute foot prints.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:53:31

You could try letting your feet MELT into the pavement?!?

From Camille on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 13:55:01

LOL. I think you can get 3rd degree burns if you stand in one spot for more then 10 seconds. You have to move quick. This is why I was amazed when I found out that Lybi runs barefoot! That pavement it hot, even at night.

Ok, I'm probably going to die from all that cuteness. The giant hat is PERFECT.

Dress her that way every day, not just for Halloween!

One year Amanda went as Little Bo Peep and Madeline was her sheep (lamb). They were 4 and 1. I'll have to show you the pictures. I wanted to make Amanda wear dresses like that all the time.

That is the cutest baby costume I have ever seen though. Ever.

I just read the first part of your blog (I'm recovering from the cuteness overdose), and Maddy had that when she was 3, I think. It was awful, and the symptoms lasted over a month :(

I hope Melanie does better than Madeline did. She looks very happy in those pictures, so hopefully she's on her way to a quick recovery... Hang in there, I know sick babies break your heart.

From Camille on Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 18:20:04

Rachel - Thanks for the compliments. Brandon had suggested in August that Melanie should be Strawberry Shortcake because she is such a red head. I looked around for a costume and everything was for the new Strawberry Shortcake. I like the original better. So I had my mom teach me how to sew so I could make her costume. It turned out really cute.

I think she was extra happy in those pictures because Grandpa Smithson had just stopped by. She has a special place in her heart for her Grandpa. It's too cute!

I would love to see Amanda and Maddy as Little Bo Peep and the Sheep. Too Cute. When me and my brother were younger, mom made us matching costumes all the time. He was Peter Pan, and I was Tinkerbell once. And Once he was a Magician and I was a rabbit jumping out of a hat. I hope I'm that creative when I have more than one baby.

Back in the Saddle Again!  After a whole week of slacking off, I decided I better run this morning.  I did 5.1 miles in 45 mins.  It left really nice out!!!

Good morning everyone!

***Added***

Tonight I convinced my husband to do a short run with me.  We did 2.52 miles in 22 minutes. :o)  I wore him out.  The first mile he was running faster then slower and acting goofy.  By mile 2 he was quite and breathing really hard.  At the end, we had a good laugh at ourselves.

After you have a break from running you get that guilty uneasy feeling huh!? I wont be able to run for a while but Ill keep bugging you guys that can! lol

From Camille on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 09:56:28

Oh yes... the guilt definitely set in. But, Melanie was nasty sick this weekend, so it was better that I spend time with her. Please, bug away. It keeps me going!

Hey, I have a 5-K coming up on November 8th. What do you think is a realistic goal for me?

From walter on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 10:40:30

You should set a goal for 30 seconds off your pr and if you can remember your mile split times, try running 10 seconds per mile faster. You can do it!

From Camille on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 11:14:18

I have no idea what my splits are because I don't run with a watch. I swear I need to get one. If I get a watch, will I run the risk of becoming even more of an adict?

From montelepsy on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 12:13:26

What are you using for time? An hourglass, a sundial? Do you ask strangers?

You're running sub-9s for 5. You should definitely make your sub 27:00 5k now!

From Camille on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 12:17:08

a giant hour glass :o) Like the one in Wizard of Oz!

Actually, I look at the clock on my way our the door and then again when I get back home. It's not the most accurate thing in the world, but it gives me a good idea of my time. So, my time can be off as much as a minute. I know I need to get a watch, but it really hasn't been the highest priority. Maybe I'll ask Santa for one.

From marion on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 14:12:23

Nice miles and pace! Whooo Hoo!

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 17:40:45

AWESOME!!! Great pace, girlie!

From walter on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 20:23:43

Just a cheap stop watch wrist watch will work Camille! Try running a solid but lighter than all out first mile, then try to maintain that pace for the second and then all out on the third mile.

From marion on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 20:31:15

That does not sound like fun WAlter! Hey- I need some training tips! I am getting slower and slower and slower.

From walter on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 08:41:56

I know Marion, sometimes a second opinion makes me look back and say oh my gosh! What am I doing!? lol Ok Camille, just run a nice fun run and dont think about pain, or hurting just think good thoughts and youll do fine.

From Camille on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 09:12:35

Marion and Kelli - Thank you! It was a nice pace! :o)

Walter - Thank you for the advice. It sounds a lot like what Lybi told me after our 5K. I remember her saying afterward that I didn't look too exhausted so she thought I had more in me. This is probably true, but I've never been a runner before and don't fully understand the idea of running in the puke zone to win a race. hmmm....

From walter on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 09:23:25

Yeah, my coach in H.S. used to say no one has ever died on me from running. But alot of us puked on him!

From Camille on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 09:25:13

and he probably deserved it! I don't know why, because I'm not typically competitive like this, but I want to do really well.

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:23:05

I do not believe in running in the PUKE zone until you can see the finish line!

From Camille on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:27:12

Kelli - I think I agree with that. Yuck! I hate throwing up!

From walter on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 12:52:03

Ran a slow but difficult 4 miles. I call it difficult because I was pushing Melanie... and it's HOT outside.  I know I'm complaining, but it is 94 out there... and we are in the last week of October.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  Nor should I be pushing my baby in a stoller in the heat.  This is why I didn't run for too long.  When I got her home, she drank her glass of water like *she* had been the one running.  She is too cute.

Update on my Husband from yesterday's run.  I think I killed him.  He is in quite a bit of pain today.  :o(  I like playing the nurse when he isn't feeling well, or is in pain, but I hate to see him like this.

Hey! I've been off the blog for a week and I'm just catching up on yours...

First of all, I'm so sorry your little one had HFM disease. I HATE HATE HATE that one. That is one of the worst ones my kids have ever had. They are so miserable, and there's nothing you can do that really helps. SO sorry.

Cute cupcakes! What a great idea!

ADORABLE ADORABLE costume for your little girl. Hehehe. It is the kind of thing that makes me laugh with delight.

Hope you hubby recovers well. I think I've been in his shoes once or twice trying to run with MY hubby, so I can relate! You're just so dang fit!

From Camille on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 18:49:23

I'll tell you what... when I wasn't in shape and we'd go walking/jogging together, he use to tick me off. Once (pre-melanie) I was running and he started doing cartwheels next to me because I was too slow. I'm just glad that I'm able to keep up with him. :o)

From Camille on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 15:55:21

From kungfublonde on Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 15:59:33

your kung fu is strong, young one. That's how you ran circles around him when he was dying from only two miles!

Ok, I seriously have to go see what I can find from the 80's. If I post one of Mike, I have to post one of me too, and mine are HORRIBLE.

I didn't run today, but I did want to participate in the 80's competition.  These aren't the best pictures, but they are the only ones that I didn't have to scan in.  In all three of these pictures, you'll see my cousin (Nicole), whom I ran to help between September 15th and October 15th.  I'm going to visit her for Thanksgiving and I can't wait!

Enjoy!

I'm the tall one.  That is my brother next to me, and of course, Nicole on the right.  Can you tell we aren't pleased with the torture they were putting us through in those outfits?

Okay, Here is me, in poka dots and my cousin Nicole.

And in the spirit of Halloween...

My brother is a Magician and I'm the Bunny jumping out of a Top Hat.  :o)

I have more 80's pictures that would make you laugh, but I'd have to pull them out.  I hope you enjoyed these ones!

That reminds me... if we do a 70's show and tell, Mike had a powder blue suit he still hasn't forgiven his mother for...

I'll try to find something good for this 80's thing and post it tomorrow. If the contest is for cuteness, you just won it Camille. And Marion won for coolest.

Can you fly up to Utah for our run Camille? Why is it mothers do that to their sons?? hehehe, I think I am guilty of it too!

From Camille on Thu, Oct 30, 2008 at 08:37:57

Thank you girls! I was born in the 80's (early 80's) so, yes, I was a baby. But at my house, the 80's lasted til about 95. That's when I graduated elementary school, started highschool, and realized ratting my bangs and wearing leggins with hot pink socks gathered over them was NOT cool. :o).

Well, I'm in PAIN!!!  I don't know what happened.  I was running, and got 3 miles away from my house and started feeling serious pain.  I pushed through it for another mile and got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore.  Then I found the only business that I had seen open my entire run (an AutoZone), and called my husband to come get me.  I was 4 miles away from my house (at the half way point of my run), and there was no way I was going to be able to walk home.  Note to self... Self, start carrying your cell phone!  Now I'm limping around like a painful fool.  I hope I'm better by next Saturday (my race)

Maybe I should patent that idea. It's just so good.

From Camille on Fri, Oct 31, 2008 at 14:08:14

LOL If you are going to go through all the process of patenting that idea, you may want to see if there is a way you can make a depends heating diaper as well. (for injuries that need a heat press rather than a cold press). Just an idea. (Now I get a cut of your Proceeds)

It'd be oodles more fun with you. Hey, I have to warn you...everything I've ever read about groin injuries has been that they can become VERY problematic and can last forever. Please don't try to run if it hurts!!! It is uber important to not injure it furthur! You may have to let the FBI win this one. You'll get 'em next time!

From walter on Tue, Nov 04, 2008 at 18:10:17

From Camille on Tue, Nov 04, 2008 at 18:17:52

Lybi - we SHOULD go walking together. That would be good. Brandon would be excited to get me out of the house and around other female adults. This injury (and a few other things) have put me into a little bit of a depression. I think Brandon would push me out the door if he knew that we were going to do something.

In the meanwhile, my slave driver of a co-worker has *forced* me to go up and down the stairs today about 100 times.  Burt.... you are so evil!!!  LOL  This morning my leg didn't hurt, but it does now.  I can definitely feel it.  Maybe that's good though... From Camille on Sat, Nov 08, 2008 at 17:32:53

I *HAD* shoes... but the evil person that he is... he stole them. Saying something about pregnant woman needing to be barefoot. Totally joking. Though Burt *May* say something like that, he normally wouldn't mean it. (though I have a feeling I may be in for it when I get back to the office)

From Burt on Sat, Nov 08, 2008 at 21:14:30

I once told her, and this is no lie, that when a woman gets pregnant, her hips spread to open up the birth canal, and they never go back. Of course that was right when I found at she was pregnant. But right before that she had lost a lot of "butterball" weight. Funny how women get pregnant when they lose weight.

From camille on Sat, Nov 08, 2008 at 21:19:12

Race: Outrun the FBI (5 K) (3.1 Miles) 00:26:57, Place overall: 64, Place in age division: 2
Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles
3.300.000.00

Well, I did it!!!  I'm very happy with myself.  I ran the race, PR'ed, and miracle of miracles, placed for my age divison.  I know I'm not a FBR, but I'm pretty happy with myself.

Here's the scope (complete with pictures!):

Brandon,  Melanie and I met up with my mom and her boyfriend before the race.  We registered, stretched, did some walking around to check out some of the FBI exhibits (way cool, by the way).  I was feeling alright.  I was a little sore, but nothing really to write home about.  Here we are pre-race.  Notice that Brandon dressed Melanie for the occasion.  She is wearing a jogging outfit and "running shoes".

This is me and my mom (who was so kind to come and support us) and Yes, Burt, I am taller than someone! :o)

So the idea was to outrun some of the FBI agents.  They got a 30 second lead (which I thought was a little cheap).  If you passed one, you were suppose to tap them on the shoulder and they were to give you a sticker to put on your racing number.  Out of the 6 of them, Brandon passed 4 (pushing Melanie!)  I did not pass any of them.  I came really close, but then we had to run through some extremely tall grass... and it definitely slowed me down.  I did come really close though, so I'm pretty happy about that.  And the guy looked like Michael Clark Duncan.  O-well.  Close is really only good in horse shoes and hand grenades, right?  I was pretty happy that I passed people and never saw them again.  That felt good.

Here is Brandon passing an FBI agent:

After I hit the grass, I was feeling the pain.  I kept on.  I tell you, one thing that helped me out was I have an ipod, and paid 30 bucks last week for the nike+ chip to put on my foot.  I pushed a button on my Ipod, and it told me my distance, my time, and my current pace, in my ear.  I didn't have to read.  So after I passed the grass, I pushed the button, and it said 2.3 miles, time 18:12 sec, current pace, 8:52.   I was so excited, I think it kept me going.  Then I hit this freaking HILL in the GRASS.  I decided that the hill was not going to defeat me, so I ran up and it back down.  THAT'S when the pain really hit in.  I had .5 miles to go, and I wasn't going to give up... so I just kept trucking along.  I finish in 26:46 (I think, because they didn't give us our results and that is a few seconds behind the last number I remember seeing).  I'll re-report when I get the results.  Okay, results are in and they say I did it in 26:57.  I don't think that's 100% correct because I know that it didn't take me 10 seconds to past that finish line from where I was looking at the clock, but o-well.  I still PR'ed and still medaled, right?

Anyhow, I stayed around for the awards ceremony because Brandon was suppost to get something for passing the FBI agents.  Low and behold, some how...  I placed 2nd in my age divison.  I don't know the 1st place girls time, but I'm dying to see what it was.  Anyhow, I was surprised, and pretty close to tears.  It was definitely an exciting moment for me.  Here is me and Melanie with our medal.

Okay, now here is the fun facts that I now can get (thanks to my nike+).  My first mile was a 7:41" mile :o)  Yep... I did that!!!  (I don't know how, and I definitely can't do it now!)  Here's to a speedy recovery so I can hit the pavement again!

Thanks!

Camille,

You stinkin' owned that race!!! 2nd place!!! Holy smoke girl. And way to go on such awesome splits. I hope you are still feeling the love because you are a ROCKSTAR!! Seriously, a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am so so so happy for you. I just want to say, AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME over and over and over and over ...

Speedy split! Great PR! Healed groin! Great things!

I wasn't going to even say anything about your mom.... come on! I figured she was standing in a hole, but now that I know the truth, dang! Does dwarfism run in your family?

Seriously, though, great job. You're coming a long way from that girl who walked all three of her legs at Ragnar. :)

Great race and nice medal! SWEET! Your baby is so cute. Racers beware of the guy with the stroller!

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 15:36:38

GREAT JOB CAMILLE!!! I am so glad that you were not only able to RUN instead of hobble, but that you also placed and PR'd!! Now, imagine the next race when you are not injured---you will kick some tail!

You guys are so darn cute, by the way!

So, what did Brandon get for passing the FBI dude? That sounds like a totally fun race, I would probably kill myself trying to pass them! And the picture of your hubby passing one while pushing the stroller is GREAT!

From Camille on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 16:13:10

Thanks everyone for the great comments. I'm a little prideful today. Walking around, and telling myself (in my head, of course) that I'm awesome. I'm still a little shocked that I placed, even if it was for my age group. I am anxious for the official results.

Burt - we aren't dwarfs... repeat after me Petite!!! :o)

Kelli and April - it is funny to see Brandon passing the FBI guy pushing the stroller. And those FBI agents had 30 seconds on us. I swear I almost passed one. I'm a little upset for myself for whimping out and not passing him. I was in pain, but I think it would have been worth it. Maybe not. Brandon just told me that if I almost passed the one that I remember gaining on, that means I *did* pass an FBI agent. There was a female agent that I guess wasn't very fast. O-well. They got FBI ski caps. Brandon didn't get his though because he was tired of waiting around for it and we were on our way to the truck when they annouced it. It wasn't the more organized event. (it was their first time, so I give them a little bit of slack).

From Kelli on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 16:23:06

What do you need a skip cap for in AZ anyway???

And your husband is right, they had 30 seconds on you, so you were faster!!!

P.S. I didn't walk ALL of my 3 legs at the Ragnar. I do get credit for some running, right?

Good Heavens Camille!!! I thought you were going to WALK this puppy, especially with the pain you've been having. You are an ANIMAL! But I am super proud of you! Congrats on the AD placing! I hope you got a cool looking medal. How could you do this injured? Man oh man, I hope you are taking ice baths and stuff to recover. Hope you don't feel too sore today!

From Lybi on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 17:19:48

OK, I just saw the medal. It IS cool, and you definitely deserve it!

From Camille on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 22:01:06

Lybi,

I also thought I was going to walk this puppy. Then I decided I'd start off running and if it hurt too much, cool it. Then, at some point, I decided to just do it. I'm pretty sore today, but nothing like last night. I don't do pain very well, and last night I was in so much pain, I was nasty sick. I couldn't walk very well, and for sure couldn't hold Melanie. Brandon put me to bed with tylenol and an ice pack at 7:30 and I woke up feeling much better. not 100%, but at least I can walk without clenching my teeth. I think I'll do the ice pack again tonight and I should be much better soon.

From Camille on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 09:57:59

I pulled a few muscles. One in my back, and one real nasty one in my leg. I'm walking funny, but at least I can walk now. I couldn't walk Saturday night. I don't do pain well, and it made me so sick. :o( It's nothing like the pain you are in though, so I'll stop complaining.

From walter on Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 19:59:06

Be careful, those back strains are ugly. Ive had a nice painful day today thanks to my truck breaking down about 2 miles from my home. No one to pick me up. So I sat in the parking lot for 3 hours until my wife got off work. At least it was at the Cafe Rio parking lot. That took a good hour out of it. Sucks I cant walk at all.

Zero running... so depressing.  I'm starting to think that my injury is more than a pulled muscle and am contemplating going to the doctor.  How does a doctor check something like that?  Anyhow, what have I been up to in the meantime???

Working!   Here is a picture of Burt and I hard at work LOL.  (Can you tell we are working hard).  Okay, we were on a site visit, checking out different design constraints for a proposal that I'm writing... and at the tail end of the project, there is a lake (owned by our client) to hold the water at the end of the irrigation system.  We were checking out the potiential impacts of the project on the lake, when Burt decided to take a group shot.  So, though it doesn't look like it, we truely *were* working.  (I have some good blackmale pictures of Burt from that site visit...  I'll have to remember to post them later)

Okay... here is a picture, pre Melanie, of me doing something I love to do, but haven't been able to do since I decided to hurt myself...  Hiking.  I'm trying to cheer myself up, can you tell?  It's hard to be positive when I can't hold my daughter and walk at the same time... but I *can* still play with her on the floor.  Anyhow, this picture below is of me on top of Camelback Mountain.  It's ironic and fun because I've been called Camel for most of my life, so It's a Camel on a Camel's Back.  Okay, that was pretty lame, wasn't it?

The following picture is from one of the happiest days of my life (Having Melanie is good competition for the Happiest Day, so I can't really pick just one).  The goofy guy to my right is my brother (Christopher).  As you can tell, the short gene runs in my family!  (Poor guy!).  Our anniversary is next Saturday!  Doesn't Brandon look Handsome!!!

So, as you can tell, it's been a hard week (In several different ways)  But, I'll be okay :o)

Here is a picture of Burt, preforming the all time favorite "I'm a Little Teapot"

Hopefully there isn't anything worse going on. Did I do this to myself, or does it just happen? I probably could learn to swim, that would be good... only I'm too cheap to join a gym.

From Teena on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 10:23:24

Camille,

Stink!! I am so so so so so sorry!!

As much as I hate it, I think that injuries are just a part of the game when you push yourself. (Unfortunately.)

It is definitely frustrating when you feel like you are on top of the world and that things are really going your way to find yourself injured all of a sudden.

When is your next x-ray?

Stay positive ... it's obvious that you are a fighter and will get this thing taken care of and behind you. Wish I had some advice on what type(s) of crosstraining you could do.

Sending you lots of positive healing vibes.

From Camille on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 11:00:10

Teena,

My xray is on Monday. I haven't been able to schedule it yet, because they have been closed since my doctor's appointment. So, on the discussion board, someone said it took them 4 months to heal. If that's the case, I may be out of commission for the Ragnar. :o(

Burt - If you read this... do you think I could still be on the team, and if I'm not able to run, I can walk my legs? Man...

Maybe I'm gettin ahead of myself.

Do you think Pilatees is safe to do?

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 15:07:50

Oh Camille that STINKS! I hope you keep blogging with your cross-training while it heals--that will probably help keep you sane! Maybe the x-ray will show that it is not too bad....

From Nevels on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 17:06:29

I had a stress fracture in my foot several years ago that sidelined me for a couple of months, and the way I tried to stay in shape was by doing a fair amount of swimming and a lot of core work. Best of luck!

From Burt on Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 21:26:19

Well, my husband is just awesome, trying to make me feel better.  He is cute.  He put together a list of things that I can do to get points (I know, very elementary school, but it somehow cheered me up).  Once I get 25 points, he'll get me a price (a book or pj bottoms).  Anyhow, this morning I did 50 crunchies... earning me 1 point.  And it didn't hurt my leg.

Is it bad that I need a rewards system?

Teena - thanks!

when I started running in July, we did the same thing. I just needed the extra something to keep me going after week one or two when people who normally don't run give up. For running, I got 1 point for every 1/4 mile (which was far for me at the time) and biking - 1 point every 1/2 mile. After 100 points, I could cash it in for a book, and 400 points would give me a massage. But after I got over that hump, I never claimed my prizes (okay, I finally claimed my message, hello, I'm not stupid). I just enjoyed running

From Kelli on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 15:16:18

From Camille on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 15:37:03

he offered a dozen chippers from Paradise, but I had to turn that down. I decided that it would defeat the purpose. Though, maybe if I actually stopped eating sweets it would be worth as a reward. I'm bad!

From kungfublonde on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 15:43:12

For the reward to work for me it would have to be something I couldn't just go out and get myself anytime I want. And then it would be REALLY effective! I've been thinking about it since you first posted the idea; about what would motivate me as far as rewards go. It's a tough one...

From Camille on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 15:45:15

I dont' think the reward it self is what modivates me... but that "all about me" momment when we go pick out my reward. I'm totally lame, I know.

Okay... I am the world's worst mother!!! Melanie was moaning in her sleep, but I decided not to go in there because I thought if I went in there, it would wake her up, and then she would be up for hours before going back to sleep. So I didn't. This morning, I go to get her, and there was something on her cheek. I realized it was dried snot. I scrubbed it off and then noticed dried up snot on her ear. Thinking that she must of wiped her nose to her ear, I went to wipe it off and got a bunch of wet snot stuff on my hand. I then took her into the light and noticed her ear was oozing the green stuff. I have never seen anything like that before. I feel awful. So, needless to say, we are taking her to the doctor as soon as they open.

Poor Melanie is stuck with me as a Mommy...

*** Sick Baby Update ***

We took Ms. Melanie to the doctor, and he gave us 2 antibiodics (one topical, and one oral).  When we gave them to her last night, she was OUT!  She is still pretty misearable, but there is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel!  Oh, and the doctor also confirmed my theory that she is teething.  Until now, Melanie has only had two bottom teeth.  Now she is getting her two top teeth.  It may be the end of nursing. From Kelli on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:43:49

We have all done it, it is part of being a mother---and a good one!!

I hope she is feeling better quick. That is nasty!

From montelepsy on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:47:37

Poor Melanie! I have no idea what that could be.

Don't beat yourself up. You didn't know she was in that state. Hope she feels better soon.

From Michelle N. on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 09:51:22

You are a terrible mother! J/K Last night my 9 year old was complaining that his stomach hurt and I just told him to go to bed. And if it makes you feel better, my 11 year olds ear drum ruptured when he was little because of an ear infection I let go to long.

From Camille on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:06:39

Michelle,

When it ruptured, was it all green and gooky? Melanie has been sick for a little over a week, but Brandon and I thought it was a cold and teething. She hadn't been pulling on her ears, so I never really guessed ear infection. I hadn't taken her to the doctor because the last two times I took her, it was a cold and there was nothing that they could do for her. I just assumed. Now I'm worried that it was an ear infection the whole time, and I let it go too long. bad Camille

From Kelli on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:14:23

If that is what happened, it is not a huge ordeal. And I would have thought she would have been screaming, I know mine was when that happened!!

You are a good mommy! Take her to the doctor today and do not give it another thought!

To make you feel better, my 10 year old was an angel baby. When he was 18 months old, I had another baby who was not so good! I was so tired all of the time. At about 20 months, the now 10 year old cried one night for about an hour. I did check on him once at the beginning, then I just figured he needed to cry it out and go to sleep (I dunno why, he never cried, I should have known something was up!) Anyway, he finally stopped and I finally fell asleep. In the morning I went in his room and it smelled so bad I figured he had pooped. But no, he had PUKED all over himself and the bed, and then slept in it all night long. POOR BABY! Now, that is a bad and lazy mom!

From Lucia on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 10:37:58

Ohhh poor Melanie! I hope she gets better soon. You're still a better mom than my mother - you wouldn't give Melanie cow's brains to eat, would you? :)

From kungfublonde on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:22:04

All the best moms have stories of honest mistakes they've made. It's the worst feeling, I know. Amanda got a second degree burn and didn't even cry so I thought it maybe wasn't too big of a deal (she was 3). I finally took her to the doctor the next day when it was a huge blister. All she ever said was that it is itchy. They totally thought I was lying when I took her in, and even did this little test to see if she had other signs of abuse. I will never forget how awful that felt! She still has very high pain tolerance to this day- both my girls do. So by the time I know they are sick, they are usually VERY sick.

I hope everything goes ok at the doctor's, and that she will be better soon!

From Camille on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:29:09

Thanks everyone. Brandon has her at the doctor's office right now. As soon as the appointment is over, I'm goign to go home and cuddle my poor girl. I knew she didn't feel good last night. All she wanted was to sit on my lap and hug me for hours. That's definitely not normal. (but I enjoyed it).

From Jim on Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 09:37:56

Just because you missed an ear infection doesn't make you a bad Mommy. Our daughter had one every 3 weeks it seemed when she was that age. she grew up to be just fine in spite of our best efforts;-)

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 10:09:14

Teething was the end of nursing for my daughter! She just refused to nurse one day when she was 8 months old. I tried and tried for 3 days but she continued to refuse. I finally gave up and that was the end of that. :( I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon--sick babies are no fun!

Happy Anniversary to Brandon and I :o)  I'll be back later to report

*** Added  ***  First, I have to add that I did my abs and yoga today. :o)  Brandon was "sleeping" on the couch while I was doing the yoga... but what I really think was happening is that we was pretending to sleep and sneaking peaks.  I swear I heard him chuckle once.  Good thing I love him.

Brandon and I have been married for 5 years.  He got me two books for our anniversary: Hello, Cupcake, and Fudge Cupcake Murder.  I got him some new bike gloves, a funny bike horn (which will probably go in Melanie's buggy so she can tell him to speed up, a reflector for his bike, and a light).  He really enjoys riding his bike and pulling Melanie in her buggy, so I thought he would like those things.  Tonight we are going to dinner, which I'm excited about.  I'm going to wear a dress that I wore to the lunch the day we were married.  I really haven't worn it much since then, so I'm hoping that it will suprise him.

abs!  Tried Yoga.  It's pretty difficult with a 11 month old who thinks that mom is a playground.  I swear... the table and plank are much more difficult with 17 extra pounds hanging on!  LOL

I got a call from the Dr's office telling me that my xray looked pretty good, but they want to do a bone scan. :o(  I keep thinking it feels good, but then there are moments where it HURTS!  I'm going to give it another week or two and then try easing back into my running routine.

Okay... I have figured out why people say babies are expensive.  It's because all the things they make for babies are freaking adorable, you can't help yourself.  For example, today I stopped by Walmart to buy diapers.  What do I find near the diapers?  A beautiful Christmas dress.  She NEEDS a Christmas Dress, right?  And if she gets a Christmas Dress, she needs shoes to match them.  So, I grab the dress and the diapers, and make my way to the shoes.  (passing the movie section, where I have to admitt, I picked up Get Smart to surprise my husband).  Okay...  I find the most adorable black shoes to match her amazing dress... and what do they have next to the shoes... the cutest slippers ever.  I couldn't resist.  This is coming from ME!  I HATE shopping.  (I know you can't tell by this story, but believe me.  And if you don't believe, ask my husband!).  Okay.  I couldn't resist the slippers, and once you see them, you won't be able to resist them either.

This is why people can't get out of Walmart with just one item!

Tables are nigh impossible for me. My arms don't bend back enough.

I bet the added challenge of the Melanie weight is good for you. And as you get better she gets heavier. In a decade you'll be able do planks with you 5th grader standing on your back. Cool beans!

From Camille on Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 11:55:52

Teena - yes. They called today to schedule the bone scan. It's not for 3 weeks :o( Talk about drawn out!!!

Rachel - oh, I bought them. She will leave them on, but isn't too sure about walking in them. I guess she isn't use to having the ground being so squishy.

Mike - I finally found something that I can do and you can't. (It's probably the only thing). Yeah, I'm not sure if I'll ever be strong enough for a 5th grader to stand on me while I do the plank, but it's something to espire to :o)

Walk / jogged 2 miles.  Melanie and I decided to go to the park.  I was just going to walk to the park, but got a little frisky.  It was a little tight and a little sore, so I didn't push myself too much.  I'm a little sore now too.

The imagining place just called and I scheduled the bone scan.  The soonest they could get me in was December 18th.  That feels like forever away.  O-well.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve.  So, I haven't done anything productive today (as working out goes).  I think I'm starting to get sot around the middle (though my scale says I'm the same, I don't feel the same).

I wanted to give everyone a sneak peak at the cake I made for Thanksgiving.  Dad asked me to make a cake that looked like Thanksgiving.  It's a spice cake with apple filling.  I made everything you see, and everything is edible.  (Yum!)  I hope Dad likes it.  I just found out that I'll be making more than the cake.  Apparently he wants me to show up early so I can make dinner as he "helps" me.  What a comedian!

***Added: Did my yoga (without the help of my 11 month old this time :o) ), and decided to do a little assessment of my own (copying Mike).  I gave myself 2 minutes...

70 crunchies (I can't do a full situp)

21 girlie pushups.  (That's 20 more than I actually thought I could do...)

I also did my ab workout.  :o)  I'm missing running.  Everytime I see someone out side running, I get a little sad.  I'm thinking next week maybe.  Maybe 2 miles, at a slow pace, like Teena is?

***Added more...  14.1 miles on my dad's exercize bike.  I think that's the most action that bike has seen.  Totally joking (or am I?)

Beautiful cake!! I love making cakes. There are usually more pictures of the cake than the birthday girl every year... (I'm getting better about that...)

Good idea on the test you gave yourself. I'm going to copy you. I wish I had done that when I first got into all my push ups and sit ups. I know I can do more now. It didn't occur to me to do it, even though I knew Mike was. For some reason things he does just automatically seem too hard to me, you know? He's so far ahead of me on this stuff, I don't even try to copy him. But then you did it and all of a sudden I think I should give it a try! Are you going to get a KB next...?

I went on my first bike ride in a while.  It was super nice out.  I love this weather!!!  I passed a guy who was also riding his bike.  At first I felt personal triumph... until I realized the guy was smoking while riding.  Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of riding your bike?  You aren't getting the health benefits for riding if your smoking... and you sure as heck aren't enjoying the fresh air.  O-well.

I did my own version of circuit training.  I set a timer to 2 mins and every two mintues changed from one exercize to another (2 mins of situps, 2 mins pushups, etc. etc.) and repeated the whole thing 3 times.  My abs were feeling pretty sore by the end :o)

I was a total loser though... I had set my alarm clock for 4:10am to go for a bike ride.  But when it went off, I got up, started getting dressed and to head out the door, but my head started hurting, so I went back to bed.  Bad Camille.  That dang headache lasted all day.  I'm sure if I had gone biking, the fresh air would have helped.  Sometimes I just don't think about that.  see... total loser!

I need advice on my workout today (when I get home from work):

  1. How many situps does it take to work off 3 Otter Pops?  My throat has been a little sore (Burt can testify to that since he has been listening to me cough through the wall) and I've been sucking on Otter Pops to cool it.  Yummy!
  2. I haven't ran in weeks (4 weeks, maybe 5... I'll have to check).  Except for one short little run last week.  I'm not in too much pain.  Actually, I'm not in any pain until I move "just right", and then I feel it.  Is it too early to go running?  What do you guys reccomend?

How many situps does it take to work off 3 Otter Pops? I just found out there are 15 Calories in an Otter Pop.  Not too shabby.  I can burn that off going down stairs at the end of the day. :o)

***Added***

I did 2.11 miles.  I know you girls told me to only do one mile, but I wasn't really paying attention to my distance until I was atleast 1 mile out, so I turned back.  Anyhow, my average pace was 9:25/mile.  I didn't think I was going that fast.

Okay, here's the scope (so you guys can give me advice).  While running, I had pain at about a 2/10, maybe a 3.5/10 at the small hill that I should admitt to running up.  I'll report the pain after a few hours.  We will see what you think.

Thanks for the advice!!!

Okay... later that night, the pain level got to 5/10, but this morning I don't feel any pain.

From marion on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 15:20:31

1 mile- if NO problems at all try 1.5 the next day. Proceed in tiny incriments and STOP if there is ANY pain. Life would be great to run even a mile a day for a bit ;)

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 15:24:07

If you have access to a treadmill you might want to run on it first for a slow short run--it has a little more give than the ground and might lessen the impact a bit.

From Camille on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 15:28:50

Thanks girls. 1 mile it is. I don't have a tread mill nor a membership to any gym, so I will try running in my neighborhood today. If it hurts too much, I will see about going to the local rec. center.

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 15:35:34

When I rolled my ankle a month ago for some reason I could run on the treadmill after a while, but running overground was excruciating and impossible. I don't know exactly why the treadmill was so much more tolerable.

From Lybi on Wed, Dec 03, 2008 at 14:56:38

Camille! I'm so sorry you have been so injured for so long! But puuuu-lease do not run yet. A little patience now will bring bring dividends later. Reinjury is often worse that the original injury, and takes longer to heal. :( Water jogging or swimming might be a good alternative for you.

From Teena on Wed, Dec 03, 2008 at 18:37:04

Camille,

If the pain is gone the following morning, but was present during and after the run my sports doc usually tells me this: take one or two days off and then try again. Only run ONE MILE this time though.

Although you definitely can not go wrong with Lybi's advice. It is the safest, especially if you don't have a race that you NEED to be ready for. My sport doc knows that I will always push the limits and so he tries to get me running as soon as possible (but at a minimum) in hopes that that will satisfy me somewhat.

Keep us up to date!!

From Camille on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 09:19:30

Well, I didn't run last night... and it is bothering me today. I was hoping I could run in the London's Run in January, but didn't sign up because I didn't know if I'd be healed in time, and if running in London's run effects my ability to run in the Ragnar, then I didn't want to chance it. From montelepsy on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 14:14:11

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Dec 04, 2008 at 14:18:52

Oh boo I am so sorry that it hurts again today. Are you able to walk without pain? If you can stand to bear weight an elliptical trainer can help you maintain aerobic fitness without the impact--it is hard to find time to do that with kids though! Hopefully the doc has some good ideas and input.

The coughing pain level is more like a 6/10.  Not cool.  I finally went to the doc (after a month), and he listened.  Then he had me to a breathing treatment, gave me an xray, and drew blood.  The xray showed that my lounges are super agrivated (I guess there's a lot of water in there)... and I could potientally get pnoemia (spelling?)  He can't treat me though, because I am nursing.  All he could do is give me an inhalor to help me open my lounges until I have weened Melanie.  :o( It may go away on it's own, but doc seemed doubtful.

Oh no! YIKES! I hope you are able to avoid getting pneumonia! Gosh, what to do? I had a friend with cystic fibrosis (which leads to a lot of bouts with pneumonia) who walked vigorously for 30 every day, even when she was so sick. She said it helped bring up all the gunk.

I am so sorry you are having to deal with all this. Hopefully you are going to get all the injury stuff over with at the same time, so when you start up again you will be good to go for a LONG time sans injury!

How's Melanie?

From walter on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 09:41:30

Wow, you are going through alot. I didnt catch you were that sick. How the weather holding up for you? It got down to 25 this morning and Im glad Im not running in it. The thing that sucks is when I can run again, it will be down in the teens. Get those vitamins in you. Lots of C!

From Teena on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 11:20:49

Camille,

Sorry about the lungs, that stinks!! Don't be afraid to use the inhaler (btw, which inhaler did he put you on?). The inhaler will actually help you cough up all the gunk and get rid of it faster. Good luck! Heal quickly my friend.

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 11:24:50

What a bummer! Hopefully the inhaler helps and you can get all that crud out. Then you can start running again on a pain-free leg and clear lungs.

From Kelli on Fri, Dec 05, 2008 at 18:05:49

I'm back from the dead.... kinda!  I'm sorry I've been MIA.  I got super yucky sick this weekend off the cough syrup medicine that my doctor prescribed me for night time.  Such a bummer.  So... in retro-spect, I feel much better, even though I feel EXACTLY like I did before I took it.  Funny how that works.

So, this morning, as I was getting ready for work, it dawned on me that I haven't done any type of exercizes since Tuesday? of last week.  That's a whole week of nothing.  I'm a total loser.  Need to get back on the ball.  But, on the postive side... I haven't done anything that could re-injure my leg.  Yeah me!

From Camille on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 10:08:25

Walter - I hope you don't get it! Not fun. I hate the whole "there is nothing we can give you to make you better, and hopefully you don't get pneumonia" thing the doctor has told me. I feel like I have my hands tied. Sorry... random venting.

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 12:19:57

From kungfublonde on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 15:46:17

Yay, I have a friend in the loser club! Both girls took turns with a stomach virus, and then I got it for two days. Other than that I've been doing my random workouts. But I still feel pretty worthless. I decided to get back to the blog to pull myself out of this funk. Because the only thing worse than being a loser is being a funky loser :(

I'm glad you got the rest you needed. What are you going to do first to get back into the swing of things?

From Camille on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 15:49:07

Mike - Yes... he is a slave driver... meanie! :o)

Burt - so you mean if I'm dead... I get the day off! :o)

Rachel - I don't know. Tonight isn't looking too promising because I have scheduled Board of Reviews (scouts) from 6 until 8:45. (anything after 8 is considered late for me). Maybe some yoga. What are you planning on doing?

From kungfublonde on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 15:54:15

Tonight both girls dance at the same time for an hour and a half, so I am going to the gym for that time. I am going to bike then do weights. I am determined. The girls are in a carpool now, so I don't have to wait until they are done at dance. The temptation is there to just come home, put on jammies and fold laundry. But I am determined to hit the gym for at least an hour today!

From kungfublonde on Tue, Dec 09, 2008 at 18:48:54

Don't forget, even 30 to 45 minutes of stretching is a great workout. When I get home at night and I'm super tired, I try to stretch for at least a half hour. It's a lovely, lazy way to be productive :)

Well...  I am still a total loser.  I did some stretching (thank you Rachel! :o)  )  Tuesday was super busy with church meetings, and I didn't get home until super late.  Last night was busy with more church stuff and baking.  I know this isn't the "Fastbaking Blog"; however, I have yet another cake picture.  I made this cake last night as a going away gift to a friend and co-worker who thinks she is allowed to move to Washington. :o(

I was also attempting at baking the cakes for Melanie's first birthday (I'm having a little party for her on Saturday).  It was a disaster.  I measured the batter exactly as the cake pan said, and somehow it over topped... burning on the bottom of the oven and ruining both that cake and the other cake that was in the oven.  I will have to attempt it again tonight so that I can decorate the cakes tomorrow.  Don't worry...  I will post pictures (not that you were worried.  I'm sure all of you are sick of seeing my cakes on here).

I hope everyong is having a great Thursday!

That cake is beautiful!

Losers are people who have nothing to do and do nothing. That is NOT the case for you. You have a life, and that is very non-loser of you :)

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 11:34:33

From Camille on Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 12:30:21

You both are so sweet! I couldn't start a "fast"baking blog though... because it turns out that baking in a hurry is NEVER a good idea. LOL

Rachel - Thank you. As you can tell, I like to call myself a loser a lot. I just feel so guilty for not doing any sort of exercizing this last month. I'm afraid I'll get in a rut and not start up again. I need to get well. Being sick bites!

April - Thank you! Melanie's birthday is Monday. I can't believe my baby is a whole year old. I will definitely post a birthday cake picture (and an after picture of Melanie)

From kungfublonde on Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 14:01:47

Being sick DOES bite, I totally agree. And when it passes it's tough to get back into the swing of things (no matter how easy Marion makes it look!) I try not to obsess over the progress I'm afraid I've lost. Eating right and getting good sleep and stretching are part of staying fit, and you can do them when you don't feel well.

I can't wait to see Malanie's cake and birthday pictures!!

Of course, it is all Strawberry Shortcake because of Melanie's red hair.

Okay, here she is digging in.

Here is Melanie upset after mommy washed her face off.

Here she is with her new toy from Papa Terry

Walter - Thank you! I don't think Melanie felt bad about diggin in as soon as she tasted the frosting. LOL. She was so tired though, she didn't do as much damage as I thought she would. She didn't have it in her hair or on her clothes... nor did she get it all over the floor. It was fun though.

Teena - Thank you for the compliment. I'm not necessarily a fun mom... more like a funny looking mommy. LOL I still feel sick, but it's just that time of the year, you know? Melanie is just barely 1 year (Monday was her birthday). It's time, I know that... and I was actually in the process, but now it's like cold turkey.

From marion on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 22:37:09

I nursed my babies until between 15-22 months, so you are just fine. It is time to quit, when it is time to quit. People always asked me when I knew it was time to quit. My answer is, that it is time to quit when the next person who goes for my breasts is going to get knocked upside the head! ;) I always used to wonder how those doggy mommies could just get up and walk off while their puppies were nursing. Once I was a nursing mom, I knew exactly how she felt! Hang tough honey- she'll be fine and you'll be GREAT! :D

From Camille on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 22:42:24

Marion - You crack me up! That's hilarious. I decided it was time to start weaning once she got top teeth to match the bottom teeth she has. I'm pretty sure baby teeth are razor sharp! I had weaned her from day time nursing (no more worrying about milk while working), so it really shouldn't be a problem cutting her off all together. But, lets just say this wasn't my plan...

From walter on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 22:57:40

From marion on Fri, Dec 19, 2008 at 00:21:28

You are back and running FASTER! My daughter weaned herself unexpectedly at 8 months old--refused to nurse! It surprised me and I was sad. I tried for 3 days to get her to nurse before giving up.She was a regular barracuda and loved to nurse so it was odd to get rejected so suddenly. You and Melanie will be okay! Rocking chair sessions with her on my shoulder and me singing helped me feel better. I still rock her to sleep for naptime and every once in a while at night when she wakes up from a bad dream!(she is 19 months old now!)

Aah, so what is going on Camille? I haven't been on the blog for a while. I hope everything is okay.

From camille on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:42:37

Kelli - Thanks! I thought it would be cool to see Melanie glow in the dark too. LOL But, then I decided that might be a bad idea. She is officially a big girl that drinks big girl milk from a cow. I'm a little depressed by it. I feel like she doesn't need mommy anymore.

Michelle - Oh, I have a stress fracture. It doesn't really hurt any more though, just every once in a while. The doctor wanted me to get a bone scan, and I scheduled it while I was in a ton of pain. I almost canceled the appointment (since I'm not hurting so much anymore), but my hsuband convinced me to keep the appointment just to be sure that there isn't anything serious going on that I need to be aware of. I've really been holding off signing up for any races until I get the results and the doctor's opinions. Is it bad that I blindly trust mine and Melanie's doctors. I hope they are the good, honest men I think they are.

From walter on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:46:21

Camille, I have a great Doc also but she like messin' with me. When I got Mono a few years ago she laughed when she told me I was not able to run at all for 2-3 months. I told her I wasnt leaving her office till she apologized. lol

From camille on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 12:49:48

Walter - That is hilarious. My doctor is a older, over weight man. When I told him what I was doing when I started feeling the pain (which was running), he jokingly said that *that* was the problem, and why would I do something that stupid. LOL

From walter on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 13:08:41

Did you tell him he's old! that'll get him! ha ha My doc is from Boston and knows what a big deal running is. She just loves to push my buttons. She told me to quit running this year when I found I had a double hernia. I told her I needed a second opinion just to mess with her. lol

From camille on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 13:12:18

Oh, I remember you saying that on the blog. She sounds like she has quite the personality.

No, I didn't tell my doctor that he is old, but I'm sure he knows that without me telling him. I was one of his first patients... and I was a new born. So, I'm sure just coming into the office is a reminder of how old he has gotten.

It's a sick day.  My poor daughter woke up with a really high fever, and just misearable.  I decided that what she needs is momma to stay home and take care of her.  We have been total couch potatoes, and snuggled on the couch for the first 3 hours of the day.  She is currently taken a nap, and I'm on here confessing that I feel like a total slacker.  I'm planning on running this afternoon, assuming that Melanie is feeling a little better, or tonight when Brandon gets home from work.  If I don't...  I need one of you to kick me in the rear! (That's a joke Burt...)

***ADDED well...  I didm't go.  Melanie was miserably sick all day.  It was awful.  When Brandon got home, he brought pouring rain, so we all stayed in, read children's books, and finished sewing christmas presents (I prefer handmade gifts, don't you?)  Melanie's fever was gone this morning, so hopefully she is all better.

I am a selfish Mom in that sometimes I LOVE it when my kids are just a tiny bit sick ... not as sick as your baby, but just enough that they want to snuggle all day. I'll take snuggling any day over running!! They grow up way too fast. Tried to snuggle with my oldest daughter the other day when she was sick ... she mostly just wanted me to rub her back and play with her hair. That was fun too! Enjoy the snuggling! Worry about the running later.

From Kelli on Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 14:24:42

Enjoy your sick day and I hope she feels better soon! Poor thing has been sick a bunch lately. Babies, I tell ya!

Good luck on that run later, you will get 'er done!

...as if!!

From Camille on Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 15:24:20

Teena and Kelli - Thank you for the well wishes for Melanie. Her fever finally broke and I think she is feeling much better. I'd like to think her new desire to through mini temper tangents is due to the illness... but it's more likely that it's because she is no longer my little baby, but my little toddler... with a firery additude to make her red hair.

Burt - whatever!

4.32 miles in 36'48".  My left calf is a little tight, but other than that, I feel pretty good.  Pain level at about 1.5/10.

My baby is feeling much better today.  :o)  She and daddy have decided to take a trip to the store to finish up their Christmas shopping so mommy can run and then relax.  Isn't that sweet!  :o)  I hope everyone is having a great day!

Glad baby is better! What a relief. You are really zipping along on your pace these days!

From Camille on Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 19:16:34

I know. I didn't keep an eye on my pace until I was done. I probably should slow done. I was just going with what I thought felt comfortable.

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 19:21:36

It comes out to 8:31/mile pace. Awesome for you if that feels comfortable! Maybe your body needed a break and now that it got one you are just speedier now!

From Camille on Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 19:24:17

It's crazy to think I actually ran that fast. LOL

Merry Christmas Camille!

From Kelli on Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 10:48:01

Oh, man, she is so cute!!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS in warm AZ! It is a blizzard here, we will not be going to grandmas for quite a while!

From Burt on Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 12:32:52

Merry Christmas! Did the doctor ever give you a recommendation on when to start running?

From Camille on Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 20:51:03

Teena and Kelli - Merry Christmas. I hope you both are having a wonderful day with your families!

Burt - Merry Christmas! No, my doctor didn't give me any reccomendations. The bone scan showed that I had fractured my pelvis and that it is healing. The nurse I talked to on the phone says that it will heal on it's own. I'm just running short distances and listening to my body. Hopefully I'm not being *too* ignorant.

Merry Christmas Everyone!  It rained all day, but this evening the rain subsided and it was beautiful.  I was able to hit the pavement, sporting a new running shirt (thanks to my wonderful husband).

I hope everyone has a chance to celebrate this wonderful holiday and to remember what it is truely about!

You ran!!! I am so jealous! it has been a blizzard here, and we have not even shoveled the snow. No way am I running in that mess, I would for sure get hit by a car!

Hope the day was great! My sister and her family are here from AZ and they have about had it with the snow. They are ready to go home!

From seeaprilrun on Thu, Dec 25, 2008 at 22:53:05

I have a running skirt and I love it! They are so very comfortable and I like how they look--I feel too self-conscious in running shorts and they always ride up between my thighs! Merry Christmas!

From Camille on Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 07:54:29

Kelli - I guess it snowed up north here. The news says it was the first time it snowed in Arizona in 20 years. We are going north to visit my dad today and I'm sure we will be seeing some snow. I'll think of you! :o)

April - I've never ran with a running skirt. How does that work? I always wear 3/4 pants.

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 12:37:18

oops Camille I misread your entry--it said running SHIRT from your husband, not running SKIRT--that's why I was blabbing about my running skirt--assuming you like yours too! Anyways the running skirt I have has compression shorts underneath and then the skirt is over the shorts. The shorts keep my thighs from rubbing and then the skirt covers the shorts so nobody can see my thighs in skin-tight shorts!

From Burt on Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 01:27:33

Camille, I'm not sure who your sources are, but they aren't very reliable. Pretty sure there's been snow in Arizona at least once during these last 20 years.

From Camille on Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 22:56:20

Burt - First time it's snowed in Arizona on Christmas Day in the last 20 years. I learned that on the news.

I ran absolutely NO miles yesterday... :o)  And for some reason, I'm okay with that.  I had intended on going running with Melanie after work, but when I picked her up, I found out she had had an accident and split her lip/gum (in the front).  My poor little girl was just miserable.  Instead of running, I took her home and snuggled and played...  It was nice.  Then, after she went to bed, I ventured out for some much needed girls night with Lybi!  We went to the Cheesecake Factory.  Before anyone gives me a hard time... I must tell you that Lybi and I resisted the temptation of ordering one of their oh so evil... but oh so yummy deserts.  It was lettus wraps for us!  Yum!

So, even though I wouldn't call my day productive on a physical level... it definitely ended well.  (Thanks Lybi, for meeting up with me!  We are DEFINITELY doing that again) :o)

How fun! I love Cheescake factory, that huge menu never ends! And good idea to stay with your girl after a traumatic day, sometimes you just have to make those choices (though Sasha may disagree) :)

From Camille on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 10:51:35

That's because Sasha isn't mommy. :o) I was pretty tramatized myself, really. She had blood all over. Granted it was because it was a mouth injury, but still. I don't like to see my baby in pain.

From seeaprilrun on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:35:09

Oh poor baby she definitely needed some cuddle with mommy time! Girls night out sounds great--I think I'm going to arrange one of those for myself sometime soon!

From Burt on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:41:03

Why wasn't I invited? Am I not girly enough for you?

From Camille on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:47:06

April - If you lived closer... I'd do a girls night out with you! :o) It is very theoraputic (spelling?)

Burt - Oh, you are girly enough... LOL. But would your wife approve of you going to dinner with one gorgeous woman... and me. I doubt it.

From Burt on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 13:14:59

I'm not mad that I didn't get invited. I'm just mad that you didn't even tell me. That means you must've been saying hurtful things about me the whole time.

From Camille on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 13:16:52

Thanks for the spelling.

And no, we didn't talk about you the entire time. We did talk about the Ragnar for a few momments, so I'd be lying if I said you didn't come up. But it wasn't hurtful. I promise.

Sounds like a great decision to me Camille!!

From Jeremy on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 21:09:31

Hi Camille,

Thanks for welcoming me to the blog. I just finished six miles with my daughter in the stroller a couple hours ago. She loved it too! She kept yelling, "faster, faster!". Which is exactly what I used to say at Disney Land when I was younger. She had a blast though.

From Camille on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 21:20:50

Jeremy - That's awesome! :o) Melanie doesn't speak yet, but will clap and scream. I think it will be fun when she can say "faster"

I assume recovery pace means 11 minute miles.

From Camille on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 13:14:57

Whatever... it felt like a recovery pace.

From seeaprilrun on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 at 14:02:24

If it felt like a recovery pace then it was a recovery pace! I avoid timing myself on recovery runs because it might be too tempting to speed up since I'm on the clock!

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

Painful 1.52 miles.  I spent about 1.5 hours walking up and down my friend's neighborhood passing out flyers for her child care, came home, and then ran.  I'm wondering if I had pushed it already by doing all the walking.  I started okay, but by the first half mile, my pelvis started hurting.  I went a little further, wondering if it would go away, and then I turned around and headed home.  I'll have to play it by ear and see how it feels tomorrow.

On another note... if anyone lives in Mesa, Arizona and is looking for good, reasonabily priced child care, please private message me. (Yes... slameless plug, but I'm assisting her in the expansion of her in-home child care, and I really want to see it succeed)

I hope you all have an awesome night!  Happy New Year!
