Found my mojo again this week!  Today's run felt good. :)  I figured I had lost all "umph" for running (or moving in general) for the next 4 months.  Last week all I felt like doing was sitting on the couch and eating.  It got so bad that even James said a couple times, "Hon, don't you need to go workout??"  He has never once had to say that!  Haha. :)  Well it turns out someone was just having a little growth spurt!

Weight update!  Things are cookin' now. ;)  There are many times I find myself wanting to EEEAAAATTT lots of junk food.  I know everyone wants to do that, but this is serious stuff I'm fighting against you guys!  Hahaha. :)  Here are my numbers so far and my goal for the next 4 months...

  • Best running weight so far: 125 lbs (2010)
  • Starting pregnancy weight: 145 lbs
  • Total pregnancy weight gain: 10 lbs
  • Current weight: 155 lbs
  • Goal preg weight gain: 20-25 lbs* (165-175 lbs total)
  • Weeks left: 17

I'll try and stick to the goal weight gain as long as baby girl is progressing well; I won't freak out too much if I go over.  And I'm not going to count my calories.  I'll just eat when I'm hungry, but try to get the highest nutrition possible. I want to at least try for the low end since technically, being only 5'4", I was "overweight" according to the BMI scale when I became pregnant (!!!).  Definitely not the weight I am proud of, but maybe it helped us get pregnant easier??  Who knows.  I can definitely feel the 30 extra pounds when I run.  It will be nice to be at 125 again, whenever I can get to that!  Just think of all the strength training my legs are getting with each step right now! =0)  Oh how nice it would be to just use the excuse of pregnancy to be lazy and eat!  That would be fun! :)

NICE goal weight gain! I gained 40 lbs with one of my babies...the weight came off slowly but the stretch marks are horrid and permanent! :) :) :) With my 4'11" frame, I was one big rolly polly ball...the baby took up residency of every single inch of my belly. I could not breath no less run.

Sorry to ramble on...:) :) :) I think you are the cutest pregnant running girl EVER!!! You are doing everything right! Keep it up!!!!

Thanks Teena! :) Oh my gosh Smooth!!!! Are you OK? Hopefully you didn't get too hurt. :( You know, it's funny you say this, because my midwife told me she doesn't want me running outside anymore because of potential ice...treadmill only. I know that's true, but the thing is, I feel MUCH more stable outside than on a fast moving machine! They make me nervous! So don't tell her, but I still run outside. =0) Anyway, hope you're OK.

No 5 miler...:( Turned into a 5th shift in a row! Can't wait to go for a nice, rejuvenating run on Monday! Not a fun running week, but feeling very blessed to have an opportunity to make some extra money while we can. Apparently babies are coming in droves across the valley and all NICU's and labor & delivery units are swamped! LOL We are almost double our normal census. So we all try to help out when it gets busy and then are rewarded with big fat checks. Something I could not keep up like some nurses do. I love my job though and it helped that James had a big homework project this week/weekend anyway. And now I'm going to rest for the next 3 days. :)

Today we walked around again and went to the Jabbawockeez.  We also had free vouchers for restaurants so we went to a really nice steakhouse.  The waiter was NOT pleased to have us at his table since we didn't drink lots of wine, gamble, eat a lot of food and desserts...etc.  Hahaha, it was funny!  We saw the bus boy more than him.  He was also very offended when I asked "what comes with the steaks?"  Apparently, when you eat at $60+ per plate restaurants, "everything on the menu is ala carte...Ma'am."  (making it $80+ per person) Well excuse me!

We were beat by the time we got back to our hotel around midnight.  We used the rest of our vouchers for a breakfast buffet at "Le Village Buffet" at the Paris Hotel the next morning before driving home.  It was so yummy!  Made to order crepes and omeletes, food everywhere and the hotel looks like you're walking in a Paris village (with a blue sky, clouds, trees and everything).

It was a lot of fun, but we both agree...we're Las Vegas'd out for a very long time!  You can only stand so much smoke and junk for so long.  Now we're back to reality and wish we could still be gone somewhere. :)

Man, gotta love people that think we all eat and drink at hundered $/ plate restaurants all the time. Nice. Hopefully, at least the food was good.

Do you have a belly support band? If not, you may want to get one. It will help the ligament pain that you will continue to encounter. It was the only way I could run. Otherwise I felt like my baby was going to fall out :)

sorry about your hip/pelvis. hope it's okay...

regarding the restaurant -- you should have ordered a pb&j (no crust!) just to see his reaction.

Bought a maternity band today.  I'm just going to hold off on cardio until I can get it in the mail because the ligaments are still pretty sore/tender to touch.  In the meantime, I'm enjoying the extra energy from not exercising and not being as tired at work at 4am....and....I feel like I'm getting squishier by the minute! ;)  Hahaha...except for my belly, that's nice and tight from the s t r e t c h i n g.  She is getting big and moving my whole stomach now and gets the hiccups everyday.  I'm loving every minute of it and I wish she would move all day!  Makes the extra pudgy packs I'm finding all over my body totally worth it. :)  3 months left!

I find myself getting more and more nervous at how long it's going to take to get back to normal running and a normal weight, especially with a new baby, so I'm trying to just relax and remember that I'll just need to go at my own pace and keep a good balance with everything and enjoy it!  I guess it's not like I'm missing out on any big 1st place award checks or anything. =0)

Needed to get outside for fresh air and exercise, did 3.6 miles of walking (with about 1.5 miles of running).  Ligaments hurt later in the night, so I'll for sure just be taking it easy for a few days.  Guess I had to be sure it really was hurt...haha. :)  Not being able to run right now is coming as somewhat of a relief, unlike the deep depression during injuries in the past!  I need more energy to get some things done on my days off work, so it's working out well.

Take the time you need and when you feel like you are ready to jump back in you'll have your band and it won't be so bad.

Don't worry about jumping back in either. Just like you need energy now, you'll need it then and not having to feel like you need to jump right back in will be a relief. You'll be able to run for pleasure again and you'll love it!! Then the weight will fall off naturally and the speed will come back.

  • 30 minutes elliptical & weightlifting at the gym with my sister AND my mom

After several days of no exercising, my ligament has finally healed!  The 2 miles of joy I got from running last time was NOT worth the painful and incapacitaded pelvic girdle the rest of that night.  OUCH.  So...I'm nervous to try running at all for the next 2.5 months.

Felt good to exercise again tonight...it really helps my lower back feel better and stronger, along with all the other great benefits.

Glad you're able to do other exercises to keep you healthy and baby-growing-business happy!

AS a nurse I'm sure you know very well how hormones during pregnancy affect the ligaments which must take on the stress of a growing uterus. You're smart to pay attention to the demands pregnancy take on your body and doing everything right to stay healthy and strong! :)

GOOD JOB! So happy your sister and mother were able to join you in the gym...makes it less lonely! I answered your questions about documentaries on my blog. :)

I thought this post was neat.  Aaron is married to Nan Kennard who ran the Boston Marathon last year and did really well (she is a good friend of my good friend and grew up in Utah).  She would have done better, but became injured during the race (but kept running anyway).  I followed Aaron's blog as he trained for his first off-road marathon (and first marathon at that I believe).  I am going to put up a picture of a cool looking girl runner when I start running again.  I did this while training for SGM in 2010 and I felt like it helped me focus. :)

From watchmerun on Wed, Mar 21, 2012 at 23:21:35 from 166.70.212.36

The sole of my left foot is sore, maybe a touch of plantar fasciitis. So, I'm taking the week off. Is it due to minimal shoes? Maybe.

From glidergirl on Thu, Mar 22, 2012 at 17:21:18 from 155.100.9.11

Either way, it's never fun to have to take the week off! I hope it heals up fast. I wore some braces at night when I had something like that. They seemed to loosen my calves up at night and it went away. I'll try and find out what they're called and let you know in case it gets worse.

Hi Teena! :) How are you??

I went with something else that was more like a brace (I'm not at home now so I can't see the name) because the reviews didn't seem too great for the sock type ones, but I've never used them myself so I can't say for sure.

From Teena Marie on Thu, Mar 22, 2012 at 19:19:39 from 174.27.199.63

How are you feeling?

No exercise...again!  For the first time in a few years here at work we have had record number of babies several times over since December!  It's crazy.  So instead of structured exercise on the elliptical, I've just been working a lot (a lot) in the past 2 weeks.  I feel like I'm getting lots of exercise, so I guess that's good!  Need to pad the bank account for our spring chick coming in 7 weeks. :)  Every time I come into work I pass by the streets I used to run on in Salt Lake and it always gets me excited to start running again!  Having said that, it surprises me at how content I am to not run until after May.  I thought I would be devastated. =0)  I guess having a protruding stomach changes things a bit...

We bought a 2nd car last night after 8 years of only one car, which will greatly improve my running options and my gym time...I'm really excited!  REALLY excited!!  Oh, and we bought an awesome jogger off KSL a few weeks ago.  Planning to take baby girl on some fun runs on Bountiful Blvd this fall.

The house is clean and I've finished sewing the curtains for our windows.  They are up now.  My nest is ready.  Baby can come any time. ;)

Contractions for about 5 hours yesterday, but like before...they whimpered out.  The darn things.  I guess I'm 8 days out so we'll give it a break for now.

All the women in my family who have had babies before were really excited for me last night while this was going on and James finally said "the word excitement does NOT come to mind...more like NERVOUSNESS" hahaha. :)

Here's what she looked liked 6 days ago...she's maybe gained 1/2 pound since then.  Grow baby grow!  We're so excited to meet her!

Still here, still pregnant.  We're going on a really long walk on the Boulevard when James gets off work tonight!  I'm feeling waaaay too good to supposedly be due in 1.5 days!  Besides some heartburn and maybe a few other small complaints here and there, I'm really not that uncomfortable. It's not that I don't want her to come on her own time (and I know first babies sometimes go over), it's just that my last day of work is tomorrow night and I'd really like my 12 weeks of FMLA to include her and not waiting around. =0)

We watched some childbirth shows and videos the other day.  I couldn't stop watching James' face, it was hilarious!  I've seen my share of births because of school and work, but he really hasn't seen anything at all.  Afterwards I thought he would be totally scared, but he is now ready to tackle this thing head-on!  Guess that's what he needed! :)

Feeling good and having extra energy is a good sign. My first baby was 12 days overdue. She was born on the day of my State Board Exam. Incidently she is now a nurse practitioner. I guess she was going to nursing school in vetro! Hehe! :) I know that anxious feeling, wanting to spend every precious day of the 12 weeks FMLA with your sweet baby instead of waiting!

Glad to know the daddy-to-be is all psyched up for the occasion. You're great at prepping him. :)

Any day now, baby girl! Can't wait to hear of her safe and happy arrival! :)

Smooth, that is CRAZY! 12 days over AND it happened to be right on the day of boards! I bet you were going crazy. That's cute she became a NP. Good for her! :) Funny thing about James is he's the one that says "we need to watch some videos or something" haha. He's really excited to meet her, just nervous about everything surrounding the birth. I don't blame him, I kind am, too!

Teena, I will let you guys know as soon as she decides to have her birthday! :) :)

You are SO good and patient. With my first my husband and I both were laughing at the birth videos...yeah, we were young and immature! :) I don't think the labor and birth ever get easy to think about, always scary.

From glidergirl on Tue, May 15, 2012 at 13:08:08 from 71.35.231.152

Rachel - I'm trying to be patient....my patience is really running thin though (actually, James would probably say it was gone a week ago LOL). It's hard to know if I should just wait it out or get induced at 41 weeks (this thursday). I would REALLY like my body to say when it's time though! Ugh! More is happening today, so hopefully we're getting somewhere. "action" like this has happened and then stopped though, so it's hard to not be discouraged! Oh well. Like my mother-in-law said, she's never known any woman to be pregnant forever...which is very comforting to think about because I feel like I will be! Good think I'm not too uncomfortable. (PS - just wanted you to know I purposefully didn't comment on your blog or FB because of your latest post so you wouldn't feel obligated to write back... but as for that, I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's nice to stay connected to the outside world when you're home with kids all day! You're a great mom so don't even worry about getting on to blog or FB :) )

Another 3 mile walk on the boulevard today! I sure like that route.

41 weeks tomorrow.  We decided to wait till the weekend to re-evaluate what to do.  We could have gone in tonight to get things started, but I figured every woman who has been "started" against their wishes would have said I was crazy to go in willingly even though my blood pressure is fine, the amniotic fluid is fine, she passed her non-stress test with flying colors today, I'm not uncomfortable, I'm changing on my own (very slowly)....soooo.....we canceled the induction appointment tonight and we'll just keep waiting.  My doctor won't go more than next Thursday (42 weeks), but I sure hope she comes on her own before then!  I don't think I'm OK with waiting that long.  I'm scared of that darn pitocin though. :)  I'm sad tonight knowing I could have just gone in and probably had a baby in my arms tomorrow.  Trying to be patient and wade through the waiting and boredom!!

Forgot my Garmin, but I'm pretty sure we walked 3 miles (my sister came with me).  I tried to keep the pace up...it felt like a good workout.  It was her first stroller ride and I think she liked it.  I tried out the jogger to see how she would fit, but she is WAY too small!  Oh well, I'll just do treadmill until she can fit. :)  She's too young anyway to be jostled around that much I'm sure!

I tried on some shoes yesterday!  I ended up ordering them online since I can't run yet anyway and they were cheaper, but I can't wait to try them out.  I can tell I need a couple weeks before I run, but I feel like walking and maybe the elliptical, stairclimber and some aerobics will be OK to do each day.  Feels good to get outside in the sunshine!

  • 2 miles of running! It went like this:
  • 1 mile run @ 5.5mph, .5 mile walk, 1 mile run @ 6.0mph....cue hungry baby screaming on monitor...at which point I had to get of the TM, but maybe that was a good thing so I don't overdue it :)

Happy National Running Day!  To celebrate, I decided to bite the bullet and run on the treadmill, thanks to my good friend who said she only waited 13 days post-baby, that's all I needed to hear!  I'm 19 days post-baby.  I haven't run since Feb 22nd and the month of running leading up to that wasn't all that pleasant...felt like running through tar, my feet hurt, my pregnant ligaments felt like they were going to tear off...yada yada yada.  I was nervous for my post-baby, inaugural run today because I figured I would feel awful and blubbery.  But it was GREAT!  It felt SO GOOD!  My conclusion is this:  it's much easier to run without a baby in your belly.  Go figure. :)

After feeding the baby and putting her back to sleep, I realized that if I hurried, I could do my run outside instead of on the TM today.  It was a lot of fun!  I was a little too zealous and excited at first (and worried I would make James late for work), so I went out too fast and got winded, but I found a good groove after about 1.25 miles.

Here's what I have so far for "ease back into half marathon running."  It's extremely tentative.  I may do less or I may do more, all I care about is that I don't get injured because I did too much too soon!  I just need to keep focusing on what I can do right now and not what I used to do or what others can do!  Hopefully I can be wise with this thing. :)

  • 50 minutes spinning
  • strength training circuit (arms, obliques, quads)

Needed a good workout to keep up the conditioning effort, but I wanted to rest my running muscles so I don't buildup the mileage too fast and get injured.  There wasn't a spinning class when I could go this morning and I canNOT for the life of me workout hard on a stationary bike by myself like some of you crazies, so I found this recording of a live cycling class online.  I went into the empty spinning room and used one of the bikes.  It was actually a pretty good workout!

Avg HR 150 (I got it up to 172 during some of the sprints)

http://archive.org/details/FreeIndoorCyclingWorkout33

There is just music for awhile at the beginning, but eventually you hear talking.  It's easier to understand as time goes on.  I'm glad I found this so I have something to fall back on when I can't make it to spinning!

HA! Well, I left out the part that I've been trying to finish a book that I've renewed 3 times and can't online anymore...and is now racking up fines (because I'm too lazy to take it in and renew it...just finish the darn thing!) So, I was motivated to just sit there, spin, sweat and read :)

  • 2200 meters row machine @ level 8 for 11 minutes total.  Worked really hard to keep the pace at 2:30 minutes per 500 meters.  Tough workout, my back and arms are tired!

Allie's Wedding Bells 5K tomorrow!  My plan is to avoid going out at the start as if I'm still in 2010 and 20 lbs lighter so I don't embarrass myself and get too winded to finish at a decent pace. :)  I'll probably shoot for about 9:30 AP.  It's sad that I'm that slow right now!  Maybe I'll surprise myself and be faster --or slower- ...we will see!

I had so much fun at the 5K today!  Thanks Allie and James for putting that on.  It was fun to celebrate your special day with you!  It was also great to meet so many FRB runners in person.  I met Allie, Bonnie, Tara, Kam, Kelli, Catherine, Eric (facelessghost), Andrea, Jake K, Carina, James (fiddy) and the entire Sasha Pachev family!  I also saw RAD after her awesome 1:30 AF Half finish time!  Today was really inspiring.  It was great to be surrounded by so many runners who work hard each week and are dedicated to such a positive activity.  I think the most inspiring part of today was watching all those Pachev kids kick some major trash!  They are incredible.  It was fun to watch Jake and Andrea's team fly around the track, too.

Anyway, here is my race report: I've got my work cut out for me.  I could pretty much stop there. :)  I wanted to get a good baseline, so it was nice to have this flat 5K today.  And let me tell you, we're starting pretty low here folks.  But I guess that's too be expected since it's only been 5 weeks since baby girl came.  It's been about 1.5 years since I've been where I want to be running wise, but now I can start working on it again and I'm happy about that.

This run has a steady incline for 1 mile and then a decline for 1 mile and then I turn around and do the exact route back. I try to keep the ups and downs the same pace or better on the way back.  The last time I did this run, my AP was 10:10 so I was glad to end with a sub 10 AP today, although I did not like the effort it took!  Feels like it should have been a lot lower.  My legs are either still tired from the week or I'm still really out of shape...probably both!  But, dang it, I'm going to keep putting these slow AP's on this blog even if it kills me so I can see how far I've come! ;)  8 weeks postpartum today.  But really, I haven't been in good running shape since Dec 2010 because of an achilles injury and then nursing school got intense there at the end with full-time work at the same time and then I got pregnant....(yada yada yada)...it's nice to be getting somewhere now!  As of today I'm 4 lbs away from pre-pregnancy weight (145) and 24 lbs from what has been my best racing weight so far (125).  So I basically gained 20 pounds in a matter of months, I'm not even joking.  The last 2 semesters of nursing school while not being able to run to keep sane was a personal you know what that pretty much did me in!  I need my running!

Oh, I decided to not do the 2-3 miles yesterday so I could try doing an almost long run tomorrow (8 miles).  I'll cut it to 6 if it's not working.  Excited for my Saturday "long" run on the boulevard!

3 miles on pure fumes.  I've bonked before, but this was a BONK!  About 0.2 miles into the run (that ended in a walk) I started mentally scanning our entire fridge and pantry. After I came to the conclusion that nothing would satiate, I spent the remaining crawl to the car daydreaming about which restaurant we would go to for breakfast after I got home to drag James out of bed. CLEARLY I was hungry. I should have known better...we had a fun BBQ with friends last night and although the food was delicious (juicy cobobs, fresh fruit, crisp cabbage salad...yummy!!) this lactating runner needs more than a couple flecks of meat.  Great, now no one on this blog is going to invite us to dinner for fear of dissapointing, but if you do... I beg of you, give me a huge slab of chicken breast or something!!

This is one of my favorite races.  My goal going into this race was to run smart: start out at a good pace while still using the downhill in my favor and then step up the effort when my lungs and body were ready to run closer to VO2 Max.  It took longer than I expected and what I used to be able to do (around mile 3.5).  But I was able to hold a nice steady pace and keep it under 9:00 AP without falling apart, so it was enjoyably uncomfortable if that makes sense.  The flat 5K that I ran on July 4th was 8:59 AP, so with this race being aided, my goal was to get 9:00 AP.  I ended up doing 8:53 AP and felt really good about it.

I went away from this race feeling ready to do more tempo runs so I can keep getting that AP down.  My running appetite wants to do 1 a week, but I just have to base it off what my body can do (this lactation thing really takes a lot of resources, doesn't it?!...wow).  We'll see what happens and take it as it comes. :)

I stayed after the race and had a fun time chatting with Catherine and her hubby Facelessghost (and their cute baby) while we waited to watch Fritz and Allie finish the marathon.  They are amazing runners!!

Thanks for the positive vibes gg! You are coming back strong after having your baby. Yes, nursing (and having a little one) does take a lot of energy and I think it is smart that you are listening to your body. Great job!

Followed it with a green smoothie: kale, collard, spinach, 1 apple, blueberries, marion berries, 1 peach yogurt and some vanilla soy milk...yummy!  I have a lot more energy and I'm recovering quicker this week compared to last, so it must have just been a fluke...I was really dragging from 2 Saturdays ago up until this Monday.  I almost didn't run today because I assumed it was the same, but today's run felt great and it worked out any remaining soreness from the race.  Hoping to try again for 25 miles this week. :)  If not, then at least 20!  Surely I can do at least 20!

I'm working hard to break through some mental barriers after 1.5 years of sub-par running and I think I conquered a couple of them today!  (i.e. It's too hard to get back to where I was before, I don't have enough time/energy now with a baby, I'm going to get injured again, I'm too tired and sore-I'll try again next week....)  I started the run feeling sluggish and tired and ended it feeling empowered and energized. :)  Trying to make it normal again in my brain to run 35-45 miles per week with a tempo run.

Progressive run as I got more warmed up and confident (I haven't ran 5 days in row in a very long time).  The route is front-loaded with a hill and then an incline, the remaining has either slight declines, flat or a couple inclines:

    • 1.5 mile warm up
    • 2.5 mile tempo @ 8:34 AP!
    • 1.5 mile cool down
  • abs w/ 3 x 1 min planks

I wanted to do a tempo run today and try to maintain my 5K and 10K AP's that I got on the 4th and 24th of this month (8:59 and 8:53). I was able to maintain 8:30's and it felt so good!  So this tells me (1) I should have warmed up more for the races (2) my lungs are getting more conditioned each week and (3) I had a little too much kick in me at the end and could have gone a bit faster during the races.  I was too nervous, though, because it's hard to know what you really can do when you first come back and I didn't want to fall apart during the race.  Now I know I need to push it harder and need to shoot for at least 8:30's AP during my tempo runs for the upcoming weeks.  I want to work up to 10K tempos as well.  I was planning to do a 5K today, but my Garmin totally froze right at 2.5 miles into it, so I decided to just stop the tempo pace and cool down.  The watch eventually came back to life 1.5 hours after the run, but it's still finicky and has been for about a month now.  I need it to last a little longer, though...we can't buy anything extra right now until I start work again. =0)  Stay with me Garmin, stay with me!!

Bear Lake today, family reunion at a cabin this weekend.  We runners should get a medal for our great time management skills in order to get all our miles in. :)  Hoping to do 27 miles this week, so I went easy today in order to do a longer run tomorrow or Saturday depending on baby's schedule.  Hailey is sleeping through the night longer and longer each morning, which is great (yay!), but I miss my little 5am alarm clock (aka hungry baby) which gave me enough time to get her back to bed and run outside before James needs to go to work.  Now we both wake up too late so the treadmill it is!

Decided to set my alarm so I could run 7 miles here at home and outside instead of by myself in the woods tomorrow when we go to the reunion.  (Turns out my baby slept till AFTER I got home...12 hours straight! Woot woot! And I was out running and missed the exciting extra sleep I hear other moms talk about hahaha. :) )  I fell back asleep after the alarm went off and woke in a panic and had to rush out the door so I could be back for James to go to work (makes for a great motivation to keep up the pace during a run!).  I was still in rush mode the first few miles so I worked on relaxing everything so I could run more efficiently and enjoy it.  The last few miles were great because I pushed myself to get my AP below 10:00 and I wanted to have that "I ran hard this morning" sort of tired/satisfaction today. Each day I'm feeling less and less like I ran earlier in the day, so that tells me I can keep pushing it harder, which is really great.  I keep expecting to bonk again, but I just feel stronger each day instead.  My garmin died at 6.10 miles, but I have learned my lesson and kept checking it.  It said 10:05 AP and at the rate I was running I'm pretty sure I got it down below 10:00 by the time I got home.  It was hard for me to get even 10:30 AP and eek out a 5.5 mile run just a couple weeks ago. I'm hoping to have most of my runs under 10:00 from now on, unless there are lots of hills or I'm really tired.  Not sure what to do about the Garmin situation.  I could beg my husband for a loan...he saves all of his personal money and has who knows how much racked up in his personal account.  Me?  Running is my pimp, I am its "b" and I spend every DIME on it. :)

Carina, have you tried Babywise? That's what I did. I didn't follow it exactly, but close enough. I worked on the day routine starting right away (nap -> eat -> playtime -> nap) and then worked on the night time starting at about 6 weeks all because I was so nervous that she would still wake up a ton during the night when I had to come back to work (I work nights) leaving James without sleep all night and all day since he has to work M-F 8-5. I did have to let her cry it out sometimes or use a binkie to trick her into thinking she was being fed and then she would fall asleep...stuff like that LOL. I also made sure she got a few really solid feedings during the day and before bed by pumping so I could see exactly how much she was eating. I really hope it clicks for him soon so you can get some SLEEP!!

First night back at work last night and another one tonight with no babysitter inbetween to get solid sleep.  I'm sure it will take me a week or two to get used to this whole back to working nights dynamic.  So far it's going better than I thought. Got home from the night shift at 8am, slept 3 hours thanks to Grandma. :)  Wanted to get my run in so I hurried down to the TM.  It started out a little rough, but I ALWAYS feel better if I run after a night shift. Then about 2.3 miles into it, baby girl woke up early from her nap.  So I went and got her and her play mat with a piano at her feet and hanging toys and that enabled me to finish the run...whoever designed that thing is my hero! :) Things were much better for the last 3.7 miles.

I'm making progress!  The two 5K's I did in June and July were 30:08 and 27:42.  Today wasn't full out and it was still faster.  I think I used to do too many miles at too fast of a pace back when I did tempo runs before because I would dread them more than I do now.   Starting out at a manageable distance and a doable speed works out much better for sure!  I really like these 5K tempo runs.  I want to eventually work up to a weekly 10K.  I also think I can start pushing the pace a little.  I get nervous to go faster than I did today, but by the time I'm home I feel totally fine which tells me I could have tried harder.  Just gotta get up the courage. =0)

I meant to just do 9.5 today, but it turned out the loop was longer than I thought, oops!  But it felt great to run long and I feel really good about my AP!  Last week I did 8.6 miles at 9:45 AP.  Today didn't seem harder, I just paid attention to my pace more often and picked it up if I needed to.  I am also happy with my efforts...I tend to slow down on the way back home because there is a slight incline and my mentality wanes a little.  So today I did some strides to counteract that and it really worked.  Well, I think I did what all of you call strides. :)  Is it just where you pick up the pace (to about marathon or tempo pace) for a little bit?  How long do you guys do your strides for?  I did 3 and they were .1 to .2 miles long.  It helped get my legs moving faster again.  Made a yummy recovery green smoothie afterwards (tons of spinach, a banana, some frozen strawberries, a small apple, a yogurt, 5 ice cubes and a little water).  We love those things here.  Which is good because we wouldn't get enough greens otherwise.

Thanks Allie and Scott! Scott, I can never taste the spinach! Maybe I'm just used to it. I can kinda taste kale and definitely collards, so we just don't pack it with those like we do spinach. We put like 2-3 cups at least! If you don't mind the green or brown color, it's an easy way to get greens. My hubby HATES when turns out brown. The other day we put carrots, too (couldn't really taste them) and it came out a butterscotch color and he was grossed out hahaha.

So I'm taking it easy this week.  For the past few weeks I've had a really sore spot on my left tibial tuberosity.  It doesn't ever hurt when I run, but it hurts really bad when I touch it or kneel down and my knee gives out easily when I bend it and it hurts when that happens...I'm not sure if that is caused by the sore spot on my tibia because I'm not sure they are exactly connected that way (Teena? :) ), but they started at the same time.  I've never had problems there or with my knee so I'm going to be proactive and stop running for a bit so it can heal.  I would MUCH rather sit it out because I choose to than be forced to rest because something bad happens.

I haven't ran since Friday and I'm already super bored and antsy to get back to it.

Okay, it's been awhile. What pain? Also, I guess your number was not set up on that auto text afterall. I guess she is only allowed so many people in her group texts or something weird like that without having to manually text the message. I can always forward the text to you however when I get them. Send me your number one more time.

Tara, no problem on the text thing, thanks for trying! I still don't have very much flexibility in the mornings because of baby, so I'll just wait a little longer and then get back to you on that. Thanks! :)

My knee doesn't give out quite as much and it's not quite as tender to the touch on my tibial tuberosity.  So hopefully it just eventually goes away!

My tibial tuberosity was tender to touch last winter when I did lots of TM running.

I wonder if your knee giving out may be due to ligament adjusting to hormonal changes? Just a wild guess.

From glidergirl on Fri, Aug 31, 2012 at 13:05:00 from 75.165.248.137

Hmmm...that makes sense, I didn't think of the treadmill! I've never had this problem before, but I've also never ran this much on the treadmill. Thanks for the insight! Yah, that may be it on the hormones... hopefully it goes away soon!

Interesting experience...I couldn't get out for a run until 9:45am and I actually felt more like just going down on the TM do get my run in!  That's never happened before. =0)  Looks like me and the TM have come to terms with each other.  But I made myself go outside since Saturdays are one of the few days I can do that and I'm glad I did, it was a good run.  It was beautiful outside and my legs felt really strong and springy so I decided to go fast.  I got my speed down to 6:50's on the downhills and tried to keep the flats under 9:00 and then power up the hills as best as I could.

Excited to read the reports for Top of Utah!  Hope everyone had a good time.

My little alarm clock woke up (starving!) a few hours earlier than normal so I was able to easily run outside before James needed to leave.  This loop at that AP used to be harder than it was this morning.  What used to be a hard effort to get under 10:00 is now an easy run.  I can tell my base mileage is finally paying off!  And I never have to worry about seeing 10:00 AP anymore (unless I'm really tired).  Looking forward to having 8:00's AP being the new norm, but that may take awhile.  Now that I've been back to work just over a month, I can see that the lack of sleep from the night shift is slowing my progress a bit (I had to cut back on the longer runs for now), but we're getting there!

I went into this race thinking I would just run as much as I could and walk if I needed to, but once I started running, I realized I could probably run the whole thing at a decent pace and shoot for sub 2 hours because my very first half was a 1:54:28 (Moab Canyonlands) so I figured if I could get close to that I would feel good about it considering my very sub-par training right now.  I got 1:55:22! :)  The longest I've ran post baby was 10.54 miles back on Aug 17th, so I was crossing my fingers that I wouldn't fall apart a the end.  But I just kept getting more warmed up so I was able to keep up the pace.  It was fairly easy to keep up the pace since it was so aided. I really think I could have gone faster if I was more aware of my fitness level and had more courage.  I look forward to getting back to running half marathons with lots of speed with my heart and lungs wide open feeling the fire and then feel so great afterwards!

The course was VERY steep at some parts and the roads were cantered for most of it, so I didn't really like that. My toes aren't going to be happy (from hitting the tops of my shoes most of the way) as well as my quads and probably other random muscles thrown in there.  And I got blisters on the outsides of my feet by about 6 miles!  Pansy feet!  They are way too pampered right now and are not used to the longer distances.  I feel more haggered and sore in my feet and soleus muscles and shins than I know I would have if I had more long runs under my belt.  My feet/legs felt at mile 7-9 how they do at mile 18-21 during a marathon.

I stayed afterwards to see the marathon winner come in.  It's camdog from the blog (I'm assuming that is how it is spelled).  I congratulated him and asked him if he was on the blog.  He was happy to have won his first marathon!  Great job!

The scenery was gorgeous.  There was one spot in particular with a patch flaming red trees, it was so pretty!  There were lots of other fall colors, too.  I felt like this was a very organized race, I think they'll do a great job in the years to come with it.

Finally got my garmin sync working again: (mile 5 had a potty break, hence the slow time....I had to wait in line for the POP!)

  • 3 miles on the Blvd with our new jogger!  She loved it as much as I did. :)

Got it in the mail from Amazon today, it's always fun getting a package on the doorstep!  It's the BOB Revolution. The old used one I bought from KSL ended up being a hassle with things you just never know until you're actually using it consistently.  Two big annoyances: the alignment pulled to the right constantly, so much that my hand would get really tired from pulling it back all the time...I couldn't even let it go for a few steps before it went really hard to the right.  And then it didn't fit in our trunk because the back tires were too big so I had to take it all apart and take the front wheel off and squeeze in in through the back and it was really long, so it was jammed up in the front seat as well.  Just to take it anywhere took 25 minutes to put it in and then take it out and put it back together, etc.  So I ended up never wanting to use it even though there were lots of times I wanted to take her outside for a run.  Anyway!  The new one is GREAT!  Huge reviews on Amazon and I have to say I agree with all of them.   It rides great, has a lever to correct the alignment easily, it folds up quickly AND fits into our trunk without having to take off any wheels.  Oh!  And the shade cover goes down really far so baby girl never gets sun in her eyes.

Yes that is the plan. Rachel needs to be done by 9am because here kids are running the 5k. I on the other hand just have to be done running by the time my brother gets to town at noon. :) My only goal is to finish before Allie and Jake finish the 5k.

Good luck with that big hill tomorrow. I hope the weather is not too wet and freezing, looks less then optimal right now. I have not done a race in so long I'm having some silly nerves and pre-race jitters. Wishing you a good nights sleep.

Gonna throw all modesty out the window here....I am so proud of myself right now, woot woot!  I just beat the downhill half from 3 weeks ago by 41 seconds!  I wasn't going to do this race because of those huge hills (I shy away from those kinds of races), but I couldn't pass up RAD's coupon for $10 bucks.  I would have never known that I could actually do a race with hills. :)  Last night I estimated my pace at each mile of the race based on  the elevation map and realized that I could maybe beat 2 hours if I tried hard.  So that was my goal and I was a little nervous because it seemed lofty, but I'm hungry to get back to where I was two years ago and then get even faster so I was going to go for it dang it!

I started out at a decent pace, not going too fast so I could get in a groove and not even a mile later we started the climb.  And we climbed and climbed.  Up until a year ago we lived up by the U so I'm familiar with those climbs. I'm glad I learned that although they are hard, steep hills actually help you run faster once you get past them...whether it's because the flats seem easier or because they condition your cardiovascular system so you're more efficient or both.  Either way, it helped me not hate the hills so much because I knew it would open my lungs up. I felt like I was going dog slow on the steep parts, but I kept running!  When there were less steep parts, I would try to slightly increase my speed.  I knew I couldn't go fast, but I could increase my speed a little at a time so that's what I did.  I did this "incremental increase" strategy throughout a lot of this race, even on the flats and downhills and I think it really makes a difference.  At around 4.5 miles we were done with the bulk of the elevation gain and I felt like I could trust my cardio system, so I put down the first "hammer" LOL.  I was able to really pick up the pace and not worry that I would fall apart.  I love it when it gets to that point.  You feel like a well oiled machine, all systems are a go and you can just step it up and feel free.  Aahhhh. :)  And that's when I started having LOTS of fun. :)  We would get to some downhill parts and I just let it fly.  I got my pace down to 6:29 and that was fun.  I stayed on my forefoot instead of going on my heels for stability so I was flying.  Then we'd get to some flat parts and some hills so I would just try to keep it up.  I could feel my energy reserves get a little low around mile 7 so I was glad they had GU's (I had 2 total); the snack at 5:15am was wearing off.  I threw another hammer down around 9.5 miles because I knew there was less than 4 miles left and I realized that I could actually beat my time from the Big Cottonwood Half 3 weeks ago!  Holy cow!  I thought beating 2 hrs was good, but beating 1:55 would be a-mazing.  I would need an avg pace of 8:47 or lower for that, I was at 8:49.  Then I got cocky and thought I could maybe even get to 8:30 because I thought the rest was downhill and I was still in the mood to fly.  Come to mile 10.5 and we had to go back up hill!  Agghh!  I was not happy about that.  My avg pace went back up to 8:51 so I knew I had to push it in order to get those 2 seconds back and then beat 8:47.  I just went for it and decided that it's about time I start getting out of my comfort zone.  I did NOT want anything left in me at the end of this race.  It's hard to do that, but it's so rewarding and you realize it's worth it and really not that hard to just step it up.  We finally finished the uphill and it was flat with some downhill the rest of the way so I just tried to keep up the pace.  I was so freaking happy when I saw "1:54:xx" on the clock as I came into the finish line!!  I think I maybe could have gone a little faster, but I was almost wheezing once I stopped so I that was a good sign.  After getting some water, a banana and an orange, I went to the finish line and watched Jake K and Allie finish the 5K after just finishing the half!  Awesome!  I think Jake won the 5K and they didn't even realize he was a 5K finisher because it wasn't until about a minute or so later they announced "and here are the first 5K finishers coming in" LOL.  The race was well organized, had lots of POP's and good fuel stations and volunteers.

For some reason I am still struggling with some mental barriers, so this helped me break through a few of them.  Part of it is that I am still out of shape and I do have extra weight still to lose (+/- 20 lbs to get to my previous ideal running weight), but 80% of it is from me thinking I'm not able to step it up yet for various reasons.  But I want to be faster so I've got to just figure this thing out!  Yes, I need to give it time to get back into shape and loose the weight, but what I need even more is to just get out of my comfort zone more often and get more quality runs in!

Another fun running day for the books, I love running!

Hey Brooke, great job! You make some good points in here about going incrementally faster, I think I will try that in some races where I don't feel up to a full surge. My first marathon cycle I lost about 20 lbs from the beginning to end, so I know how that feels, but yes be patient and if you are mentally there your body will get there too.

Who kills their downhill on an uphill course?!? Oh, just superwoman! Nice job out there Brooke! I still wish I would've found you :(

You should be proud of this race and all the hard work you've put in to accomplish it. No one handed it to you, you've earned it! Who cares about those 20 pounds, just keep doing what you're doing and it will all come together soon enough. When we stress over stuff like that (and those mental games we play on ourselves) it just makes it harder and less rewarding. Forget it! Sit back, relax and enjoy the fruit of your labors!!!

Ahhhh...back to normal running, life is good!  I hated last week so bad.  I needed today's run.  I really pushed myself because I know I'm better than 9's on the treadmill.  I know this because everyday I run these past couple of months I feel pretty much normal that night.  I mean, I feel it, but I want to feeeeeel it.  I don't want to FEEL it, because I can't workout that hard all the time, but you know what I mean...I just want to feeeeel it. :)  Honestly, this run was thanks to all you runner friends and bloggers who I know push past the mental barriers and valid excuses and feeling crappy or tired or whatever.  It helps me just suck it up and get it done.

Just for reference, my fastest AP ever on the TM is 8:44 (I just started using the TM for all types of runs this summer out of necessity :)  oh and that AP also tells you how much I have hated the TM...but we are figuring each other out!)

1:44:18, AP 7:55

I did it!  I beat 1:45!  Thanks to Rachelle.  I was thinking 1:50 would be pushing it, but earlier this week Rachelle said she thought I could do 1:45.  At first I was like "you're adorable for suggesting that."  I got a 1:40 on this course when I was in pretty good shape 2 years ago, so 1:45 seemed too lofty right now.  I just got 1:55 in the Big Cottonwood Half 6 weeks ago and 1:54 in the Utah Half 3 weeks ago.  But then on Monday I started thinking maybe I could do it. Then after that I decided I would start with Rachelle and hang with her as long as I could. I thought for sure I'd have to pull away eventually...just didn't think I had the depth yet.

I met Teena at the buses and got to ride up with her, that was a lot of fun. :)  I had wanted to warm up for at least a few miles so I could be ready to start faster than I normally do, but by the time we got up there there was only about 15 minutes. I ran a little bit and then I started getting really nervous since I didn't warm up very much.  I thought maybe I would just bag the pace thing and do what I was used to and run by myself (I've never ran a race with a pacer before!)  I had to talk myself into finding Rachelle. =0)  I found her and it was so nice to meet her in person!  I love meeting FRB'ers!  So we started out and I fully expected to have a hard time but it didn't seem too bad.  -Still faster than I would have gone on my own, but I wasn't breathing too hard.  I was even able to talk a little bit.  It was so fun running with Rachelle and the other pacer Jorge and the others in the group!  I will definitely run with a pacer again.  Rachelle does SUCH a great job!  I really appreciate elite runners like her who take the time to help other runners do better than they could on their own.

The miles went much faster than I thought they would until mile 8 when I had my first mental breakdown.  I got a few steps behind Rachelle and I was really tempted to fall back.  Like....really tempted.  So I thought to myself "Will I be mad after the race is over that I lost my 1:45 at this point?"  Since I wasn't dying I knew I could hang on a least a little longer.  Soon after I felt better so I was glad I didn't fall back.  This same thing happened about 6 more times.  And each time I told myself I could keep going even though it was uncomfortable because I really wanted to get 1:45 since it had once seemed so lofty.  My feet hurt, I had blisters, my left ankle hurt and I was on the verge of some GI issues.  Once I got to mile 11 and 12 I knew I was OK.  I was even able to go ahead of the group with a half mile to go.  When I got to the track I felt like puking and was really glad to see the finish line!  I saw my family (we're all down here for a family vacation...it has been so fun!) and I waved because I knew they would know I was making my lofty goal and they would be so proud. :)  Best feeling in the world!

I knew I gave it my all because of the puking feeling and I had no interest in the treats.  I need to feel that way after a race more often!  Now I know that I need to go faster in my non-easy runs and my races.  No excuses now!  My plan is to keep building up my mileage 10% each week and get a good base so I can start training for Ogden in May.  Hoping to BQ next year (and more!)

Thanks for pacing me Rachelle! :)  I had so much fun!

Such an AWESOME race report Brooke! Yahooooo for you! Running is such a mental sport! Way to push through the pukes and hang on until the end! Good things are coming for 2013!!!

From RachelT on Sat, Nov 03, 2012 at 22:35:38 from 24.10.224.129

What an amazing job you did, I'm just so excited for you. What a huge time improvement in the 1/2 in only 3 weeks, just incredible. I need to find some of that mental stamina you have, just reading your race report inspires me.

From MichelleL on Sat, Nov 03, 2012 at 22:43:09 from 168.70.21.27

Way to be brave! Great race. I would be careful with the mileage build up. 10% per week can be aggressive, but you can do it if you listen to your body and it responds well to the increases, and also add cut back weeks to give yourself breathers. There's my unsolicited advice :D

From Brooke on Sat, Nov 03, 2012 at 22:48:46 from 74.211.26.22

Thanks Toby, Rachel and Michelle! :)

Michelle, you can give unsolicited advice anytime! Please do. What would you do for buildup at this point? And what would you say is a good base to keep up until it gets closer to marathon training for Ogden in May?

From Tara on Sat, Nov 03, 2012 at 23:07:36 from 69.171.178.11

Brooke! I'm so impressed with you, your time and your dedication. By May you will be on fire!

From MichelleL on Sun, Nov 04, 2012 at 01:29:14 from 168.70.21.27

Brooke, I do think that 10% increases at your current mileage is fine so long you have cut back weeks. I would also use cross training (like vigorous walks with the jogger) to burn steam when you are feeling the fire but have run out of miles.

Awesome job! Way to push and really go for it. Its crazy how much power your mind has over your ability to run fast. You can totally do it. Way to smash your old times!

  • Insanity Fit Test for 35-ish minutes - hard workout!

I got a laptop for Christmas!  Funny thing is I gave one to James, too, without knowing his plans so now we will ALWAYS have a laptop around, yay!  Heaven forbid we have to walk downstairs to our desktop!

So my goals have changed a little and will be this way until I can work less night shifts.  Not what I prefer, but I know I will have many many years of running to my heart's content and will never have these baby years again...so I am enjoying them as much as I can and will run more later. :)  I need the mornings before Hailey wakes up and the naptimes to make up sleep since I work through the night 3 times a week and get up with her (if needed) the other 4.  What I have found works best is to do some kind of video on our main floor where she can watch me and practice her mobility skills and play with her toys (or "exercise" in her jumperoo...she loves to think she is copying me, it's so cute).  And I'll throw in some treadmill runs or outside runs when I can (the treadmill is in our office so it's pretty cramped...not enough room for toys and rolling around while still being a safe distance away from the treadmill).

My goal is to work on my 5K time.  My best is 23:37 (2010) when I was in much better shape.  Well I'm already at 24:59 on the treadmill so I have high hopes.  It's kind of fun working towards beating a PR!  It makes me feel like I'm still in the game a little. :)  Can't wait to get it close to 20:00 and then get sub 20:00!

Anyway, the cool thing is I just started doing the Insanity DVD's and it's a hard workout!  I'll blog more from now on even if it's just the Insanity workout so you can see my awesome progress LOL. :)

Hope you are all enjoying the holidays and happy running to you!
