I re-read my doctor's orders and was pleased to see that I am only restricted to 3 miles per day for the first 30 days (instead of 8 weeks - as I had previously thought) - so by the end of next week I can increase my mileage to 5 miles per day.

Ran the first 3 at a moderately high aerobic HR effort and then moved the speed to 6:47 for the 4th mile and then 6:31 for the 5th mile with the last half at 6:20 pace. Just to see how I would feel. All systems seemed to check out well. My HR was just slightly above threshold for the last little bit, but it felt good to see where I was fitnesswise. Yoga before work.

| AM - 5 miles with Finn. Hilly route - probably a bit more effort than I should have done on a couple of the hills, but I felt up to it. Yoga session after.
Per my doctor's permission - I ran 5 miles each day this week. This worked out to 35 miles for the week. I looked back at my log - it is the most miles that I have run in a week since early October. I did not realize it had been so long since I was running regularly without issues. I feel so much improved physically, that I have no doubt that I would have no problem putting more miles in. I have to keep it limited to 5 miles per day however until the first part of March per doctor's orders. I feel like this will be a restriction I wish I did not have, but at the same time, I am still recovering - so I need to respect that processs, plus it will probably help keep me from getting injured by doing too much too soon.

Unplanned workout really - until I just decided to do it when I got to the gym. Felt solid. With the restriction of just 5 miles per day during my recovery (hopefully only until next month) - I have been trying to do some tempo efforts and faster runs to mix things up a bit when I feel the urge. But I am not really doing anything with a plan or goal in mind. Just enjoying that I can do it.

| Race - 5k - Milton Mayor's Cup. Made a decision this morning with decent weather to do this race to get an idea of where I am fitnesswise. Reasonably pleased with the result and grateful to see where I am physically following the heart stent implant in December.
Small field, relatively flat course; cool but a little humid in the upper 40's to lower 50's. I was a bit cautious in the first half mile - not sure how things would feel, but it was more mental than physical. Three guys went out to the front, with one who looked to be in high school, running in long sweat pants, but he was legit (I think he won.) Once I got past the initial nerves, I moved up on the third place runner when the two front runners gapped him; I passed him just before the mile mark and stayed slightly ahead of him through 2 miles, when he came back by me early in mile 3. No one was close behind me, and I lost contact rather quickly, being satisfied where I was. Finished reasonably well for 4th place overall. Splits were 6:35, 6:28 and 6:46.
I looked back at my races from last year - and this was a nearly identical time to a 5k I did in January 2018. With limited/restricted (doctor's orders) volume in my training, and a few sporadic / occasional tempo efforts and a couple of workouts in the last 45 days - not a bad time - all things considered.

| AM - in LA on business yesterday with flight later this evening to Australia - I signed up for a 5k to occupy my time for the day. Very very small event in Long Beach. There were competing races/events going on. In fact in the same parking lot there was another 5k race, and a triathlon. In the general area there were several other races to chose from. My race had events from 5k through the marathon. I would estimate less than 25 people lined up for the race. It was quickly apparent that I was going to be running by myself - so it was more of a time trial than a race - which I think was measured a little short too. I think I won by over 2 mins. Nice day though and it was fun to get out and do a race out of town on the spur of the moment.

Heading home today. Flight connection in Brisbane Australia. When I leave there it will be 11 am Friday morning and when I arrive in LA it will be 7 am Friday morning. Time for second breakfast. #timetravel.

I had my 3 month check-up with the cardiologist this morning and I have been fully released to return to my normal training activity without restrictions. Also, got specific written permission to run a marathon in June, to share with my wife for proof. :)

| Cooper River Bridge Run - 10k Race - Charleston, SC . This is the second year I have done this event. Last year I had planned a weekend with my wife and do the race, but she could not make it at the last minute, and I just drove over the day before and drove back right afterwards - had a decent race but not stellar. This was a re-do - in which she got to make the trip this time, and I got to have really good effort and result. Very pleased with this race today.
For those unfamiliar with this event, it is a large 10k with an estimated 35,000 runners this year. It is a point to point race over an iconic bridge. The bridge is about 2.5 miles long and has a decent climb of maybe just less than a mile.
My recent heart procedure (arterial stent) in December has me feeling very good aerobically, but I really have had limited training until the last 2 weeks with doctor's restrictions of running no more than 3 miles per day for the first 30 days and then no more than 5 miles per day until mid to late March. My training has been mostly tempo or faster efforts on the roads. My longest long run was last weekend at 10 miles.
I went out somewhat conservatively wanting to not blow-up on the ascent up the bridge in the first part of the race and miles 1-3 were good at 6:38, 6:52, 6:52 for a 5k split of right at 21 mins or so. But I felt fantastic as I crested the middle of the bridge and maybe let some irrational exuberence allow me to crank the backside of the bridge a little too quickly at 6:08. We leveled off on mile 5 into town at 6:29 pace and that would have been a great place to finish for me because I was running on fumes for the last mile at 6:49. Managed to pip someone at the finish at 6:19 pace for the last 2 tenths of a mile.
My wife was at the finish and caught a good video of me on her phone as I ran by (maybe I did not catch that guy at the end??)
So - I had a negative split by about 30 seconds. I ran nearly 2.5 mins faster this year than last year (perhaps it helps to have full blood supply to one's heart being unblocked) and I finished in the top 300 of the event.
All in all, while I would have liked a better 6th mile and maybe liked to have been closer to going sub 40 minutes - I was really just so pumped on the top of that bridge, feeling so solid and so much depth to my fitness that I had not felt in quite some time, that I would have to say this was really a good day.

Finally researched and located a solution for the Apple Watch randomly stopping during runs...there is a lock feature (swipe right) that I was not previously aware of that can be engaged to prevent clothing, moisture, or other unintentional contact with the watch-face from switching off the chronograph. Brilliant.

Could be the treadmill is not calibrated well - but I kept my HR just below threshold and something interesting of note - when I slowed for the jogs and then for the cool down, my HR went down very quickly as one would expect. That was not always the case for me over the last few years, the HR would go down but would remain higher than expected when I was doing threshold or VO2 max workouts. In short, things seem to be functioning well now.

PM - treadmill workout at lunchtime. 3 x 1 mile @ HM pace / LT Heartrate - with a 400 rest. On Daniels Tables HM pace should have been around 6:47 for me right now based on my most recent 10k, or ~161 bpm HR - just below LT. So the treadmill I used at the gym was clearly not calibrated properly because that pace was not getting close to my HR desired range - so I gradually moved the pace/speed up in the first rep until I came close to hitting the target HR. Nailed it midway into the second rep and all of the third rep. 15 min warm up and about a mile cool down. Good workout. Right hamstring/groin had a light "dagger" of pain but nothing too serious. I thought about doing a 4th rep, but thought better of it.

Happened on this run - and so I am not quite sure how far I had gotten as I quickly reset to restart the machine. I get so irritated when that happens..."stupid treadmill" - when I really should be saying to myself - "run further back on the belt, and this would not happen..."

| PM - our cruise ship made port in Molde, Norway on a cold cloudy overcast day. I awoke a little late and Tracy and I decided to walk around the town of about 18,000; but strangely no one was out and the shops and restaurants were all closed. Turns out to have been a national holiday in Norway - Ascension Day. We made our way back to the ship and after lunch Tracy got a massage treatment whilst I ventured back off the ship to run up a somewhat steep hill /trail to a panoramic view of the area which is said to have 222 snow covered peaks. I did not begin to count them. Pretty view though and a solid effort of about 6 miles in total. I made my way down the trail which was rather steep and at times slippery as I got caught in a rain shower.
It is pretty far north here. In fact sun does not set officially until after 11:30 PM and then actually stays light for the most part until the official sunrise around 3:30 AM.

| PM - in Bergen Norway on our last port before heading back to Amsterdam. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway at nearly 220,000 in population. It is a pretty seaport town with a very clean picturesque cityscape against 7 hills. Evidently it rains here quite a bit- like over 280 days of rain per year. But we were fortunate because although it was quite cloudy and looked like it would rain - we escaped with no precipitation. Quite cold though for my taste at barely 50 degrees and windy. We wandered around the shops in town and took the funicular rail to the top of a hill and viewed the city and countryside below. I ended up just doing a few miles on the treadmill late in the day since - too lazy to figure out a run outdoors.

| Grandma's Marathon 2019. I had a good day. I had no reason to expect the result that I had, but I am very pleased with how I did and how things went.
I am 6 months - post-stent implant in the LAD (aka - "the widow maker" artery that supplies blood to the left ventrical) due to a 90% blockage. Today I ran faster in the marathon than I have in 6 years.
I had low expectations coming into this race even though I had a decent training period leading up to the race. In the last 4 weeks I was traveling for vacation internationally, and then traveling for business both internationally and domestically - and though I was getting daily runs in, I was not really training or running very far.
When I originally signed up for this race - I had two goals: 1. Finish (as a statement that I fully recovered from the heart issue in the Fall) and 2. Run a Boston Qualifier (3:25 for me at age 52) in order to run in 2020 where my middle daughter is in school.
But I had pretty much tossed Goal #2 out of the realm of possibilities - because I just was not feeling as though I was fit enough to expect it. My longest long run was just 17 miles and I did not have too many lengthy runs either. Plus I was anxious about my health - although I had run a couple of 5k races and a 10k, this was going to be signficantly longer, and I wondered if I would I have a problem with such a long race.
So my race plan today was go with whatever my body would give me and to be conservative. I was pleasantly surprised that the first mile which felt relatively easy was 7:39, and then I ran 7:20 and then 7:10 and thought to myself - ok, don't get greedy or too excited. Run the mile you are in, and keep your HR at a manageable high tempo level. If the pace slows, so be it. Well, it really stayed consistent after that. I ran between 7:10 and 7:20 per mile all the way until mile 17. I slowed slightly from there on in, but still kept things between 7:20 and 7:30 and finished the last .2 miles at 7:15 pace.
The weather was a huge bonus too. They had predicted rain earlier in the week, and this morning the forecast called for 95% cloud cover and temps in the mid 50's. Well, as it turned out, we got bright sunshine, temps in the mid to high 50's and blue skies with a nifty tailwind for most of the race. Could not have asked for better weather - which brought out way more spectators than last year's event.
So - in summary - I had a good day and I didn't die.

| AM - 2 mile walk with Finn. He came up lame Sunday afternoon after we had run in the morning. Left front paw was causing him to limp. Could not see any obvious injury and were advised to keep an eye on him for a few days. So I did not take him out Monday or Tuesday- and the limp is only showing up occasionally. Did not stop him from chasing and catching a bird in flight yesterday- so I decided to let him walk a bit. Seems fine. Won’t run him for a few more days.

| This was the 50th running of the Atlanta Peachtree Road Race. I first ran this race in 2014 when we moved to Atlanta. I have run it every year since then with the exception of 2015 when we were out of town. This was my fastest effort to date and my best since 2014 by nearly a minute.
It was expected to be very hot and humid - perhaps worse than some years - so I took things conservatively for the first couple of miles which are mostly downhill. We were fortunate with some good cloud cover which kept the heat from being a significant factor. I worked the uphills to try to keep an even pace - which in recent years has really been difficult. This year with clear blood vessels - it was refreshingly manageable. I slowed only slightly in the second 5k from the first and felt quite well after the race too.
My son in law, eldest daughter and wife each participated (wife walked it with daughter) as my other girls live out of state now and did not travel for the holiday. We all connected with each other at the finish and found another friend of ours. Went to breakfast at Maple Street Biscuits in Alpharetta and had a grand ole time.
Considering I just completed Grandmas marathon less than 2 weeks ago - even though this was not my fastest 10k this year - I was quite pleased with the result and grateful that I have the health to continue to do this. I think of this each time I line up for a race now. It was an especially moving moment for me and others as we stood at the start - staring up at the enormous American flag hanging from a crane over the starting line and a solo singer delivered a poignant rendition of our national anthem concluding with a low flyover of 3 F16’s thundering overhead.

A friend hooked me up with pre-game field passes and sweet seats in the grandstand lower level behind home plate. Great game and great memory.

| AM - I decided that I would prefer not to have the "discomfort" that I noticed in the top of the left foot advance/progress any worse - and honestly it is barely noticeable - but I have been down this road before with stress fractures; so I walked 2 miles with Finn this morning instead of running and then did some rowing and yoga thereafter. Will likely do some elliptical machine work at lunchtime.
Looked back at a similar issue I had in February/March 2018. Took about 10 days of cross-training to drop out of any mention in the day logs. My memory is that this is probably less severe than that, so I will plan to cross train for a few days or a week and gradually reintroduce some running as tolerated.
PM - 8 miles on the elliptical at an HR rate equivalent to a solid running effort (without the pounding). I don't particularly like ellipticals or cross training, but as I listened to the "Running to the Edge" book and the discussion about Meb - they mentioned that he would use elliptical machines and ellipti-go bikes as cross training to moderate the workload/pounding that running was putting on his aging body. It inspired me to keep at it.

Evidently the Dunedin pass on the north end no longer exists because my gps tells me I ran over it on to Caledesi Island but I never saw it.

| AM - in Chicago for business. Went out this morning and attempted to do a workout on the roads - 800's. Rainy and windy. Did 6 x 800 with a 400 rest. As best I could estimate, I hit most of them at 3:02 to 3:06 but not too sure on the last one which got delayed because of an stoplight/intersection. Pleased with the effort and that I was able to get a workout in. Last few weeks have been tough with lots of travel and achy foot issues and a crazy cervical/neck issue. Hope things start to improve here from this point forward.

I am scheduled to run the NYC marathon this weekend. My business travel all over creation has lead to some inconsistent training over the last 45 days or so; and likewise I have been dealing with a bit of an injury to my foot and some bizarre neck pain -- all of which set up for nice excuses if my race is mediocre. :)

| Ran my 10th NYC marathon today, and it was actually in the top 2 of my favorite races at this event. A friend of Richie's, a guy named Tommy who went to high school with him and whom I have met and run with a few times, was again at the race with a group that Richie assembled for his Team For Kids team. Richie donates every year to the charity and as a result of the size of his generosity, he is awarded with a handful of race bibs to assign. He generally tries to get friend, family, and old high school track and cross country teammates to run. I have been the beneficiary of a few of those race entries.
Anyway, Tommy asked me before the race this morning, if maybe we could run together as he was hoping to get a Boston Qualifier of 3:25. His best time was last year at 3:29. I really had no specific goals for the day, and decided in the moment, to pace him and as the day unfolded, I am so pleased that I did.
He wanted to be conservative and run 7:45's to 7:50's early-on, but the day was really favorable weather-wise, and we found ourselves running closer to 7:30-7:35 pace. Most of the time, I allowed him to sort of dictate the pace, and I mainly just tried to keep us steady - and encourage him along the way. The effort was completely manageble for me and my HR was in the mid to high 140's which told me I could have gone faster. I thought that perhaps if the pace turned out to be too much for him and he dropped or needed to really slow to a walk, I could possibly finish out going faster. But that never happened. And as the race went on, I was completely comitted to getting him across the finish line with his goal time or better.
Tommy was a grinder and stayed with it; a very tough runner. I was so impressed. He only had a couple of late miles that were closer to 8 mins - but never worse. When I was doing the math, I thought we had the chance of getting under 3:20 and really insuring that he would get into Boston with more than just the minium qualifying time. I never said anything to him but knew it was going to be really close at the end. I ended up crossing the finish line at 3:19:58 and was bit disappointed to find out that his time was 3:20:01. Nevertheless it was a PB for him of over 9 mins.
The pacing role I had today, really gave me purpose and was quite fulfilling to see how well he ran and that I played a part of it.
My daughter Riley also ran today - her second marathon - and though her training had some set backs - she had a decent race at least for the first 20 miles or so. The last 10k was a struggle, but I was equally impressed with her determination and resolve to finish on what turned out to be a tough day for her.
Finally, it was last year that I did this race and had a very difficult time that later likely turned out a couple of weeks later to have been as a result of a significant blockage in one of the key arteries to my heart. I ran 30 mins faster today and felt great. As we crossed the Veranzano Bright in the opening miles I really took in the views and reflected on what a difference a year has made and felt very blessed.

Atlanta Thanksgiving Day 5k- family tradition that my girls started with my family many years ago (and that I had with my parents when I was growing up) continues. Most years I choose to run with the girls and their spouses/boyfriends and other friends or family who come to town to stay with us. Every now and then I will take off and give it a go and meet them at the finish. This year was one of those years. Riley and Delaney were in town and my nephew and his wife were as well - none of them having run very much with the exception of Riley who is recovering from an injury.
Cold windy and hilly - I had a decent race. I was hoping to dip under 20 mins but the course was a little to unforgiving with the hills and a technical set of turns entering (and then the slick turf) at the Georgia State stadium - formerly the Braves' stadium now converted. Splits were 6:24, 6:14 and 6:33. A flat course may render a quicker time for me.
Thankful for my family and for being able to run as well as I have been running this past year This was my fastest 5k since 2013 according to Athlinks (shockingly).

A year ago today I had a coronary artery stent procedure done to remediate a 90% blockage in my Left Anterior Descending artery. Could have easily resulted in a heart attack if it had gotten any more blocked without being diagnosed or corrected - but I was fortunate enough to have some anginal type symptoms that I noticed when I was running - and I was persistent with my doctors and they were thorough in their efforts despite the seemingly contraindications of any issues (40+ years of running, no family history, non-smoker, good diet and cholesterol labs) aside from those complaints.
Within 24 hours of the procedure I felt incredibly improved and was permitted and encouraged to resume my running within a week and was back to full training after 90 days.
I would have been happy just to be able to run - but instead I have had a great experience this year, almost turning back the clock 6 years to times that I was running in 2013 - and I feel great.
What a difference a year has made. Feeling very blessed.

| AM - 5 frosty cold miles on some groomed trails across from the Canyons resort with Marcus and Riley. First experience with ice crystals forming on my eyelashes. Riley hair was frosted as was Marcus's beard. Enjoyed the run despite the chilly conditions.
