AM - 8.25 miles with Dan and Greg with their dogs.  Kept Finn home to give his injury a little more rest.   I felt like I would run easy and maybe shorter than what the guys had in mind - but it was a nice day and my body seemed to recover from whatever had me down yesterday.  Perhaps it was something that I had eaten that didn't agree with me.   Hope that I don't regret it later.

AM - 6.5 miles with Dan and his dog as I kept Finn inside today again.   He's having some type of problem physically not during but sometime later after a run where he seems to have an injury such as a strained muscle - last week it seemed to be in his left hind quarter - but this week it appears to be either his ear or perhaps a toothache?  He will cry out as if in pain suddenly when he repositions himself on the floor - very abruptly and then is fine.  Seems to go away if I give him a few days off of running.

Very shocking and disappointing day we witnessed yesterday in this country.   Dan and I certainly had a lot to discuss on our run.

PM - completely unplanned tempo effort 10 miles with Finn on the Forsyth Greenway trail.  Temps in the mid-40's with very little wind; I started off the run not realizing that my pace was already under eight minutes per mile at mile 2 and then was surprised to notice that I was running seven minute pace when I made the turn around. I increased the pace slightly to just around 6:50 per mile and finished  the last mile at 6:38 for an avg of 7:05 pace for the full run.  This was just one of those days where things just felt very good and I decided to take advantage of it.

Noon - ran with Finn along the Alpharetta Greenway - started on Windward to explore the latest construction of the trail to ultimately connect it with the Forsyth trail.   They still have some work to do - but they were actually doing quite a bit of work even today.  Ran very even splits - just about 7:45 pace each mile - the whole way from start to finish - the trail is nearly flat so there were no significant hills to influence the pace except at the end.   I should have been pleased with the run, but the weather was overcast and cold and I was not feeling all that great for some reason - so the last few miles were more of a grind than usual.

AM - 6 miles in the rain with Finn before work.   This marks exactly 1 year - 365 days of running without a day off.   I have run at least 3 miles per day since March 1 of last year.   Pleased that I have been blessed with the good health and time, to be able to do this everyday. Certainly one benefit of the pandemic is the elimination of international travel from my schedule and not having to otherwise commute to an office.

PM - 3 miles with Dan and the dogs after work and then 2000 meters on the indoor rowing machine.

AM - 9 miles with the guys and the dogs on the Forsyth trail - with crisp temps in the upper 30's.   Was suprised to learn that a friend of mine participated in the Barkley Marathon this week - evidently when you are selected to do the race, it is an unwritten rule not to make it known to too many people.    He completed the first loop and had to stop in the second loop when it was clear he was not going to make the cut-off.   One of the last books he had to locate was entitled "It wasn't always easy, but I sure had fun" - which is what he entitled his Strava entry.   He wore orange and blue including a Florida Gator's visor.  Of course only 2 runners even completed the "Fun Run" this year of 3 loops.   Well done, Chris Hanlon.

Update- I had not realized Karen McNeany - also was a participant in the Barkley race   She and Chris met when he crewed for Amelia Boone in 2018 and have been a couple for nearly since that time.   Karen finished the first loop outside of the cutoff time but had the distinction of having bib#1 in this years race.  Congratulations to Karen as well.

AM - 5.75 miles with Dan and the dogs.  It had rained and stormed overnight, including some hail, but it was warm enough that I went shirtless the second half of the run.  Coincidentally, I think it was last year to the day, that I put in the blog that it was the first day of the year for shirtless running.

Dan had taken his dog, Rosie, off the leash when we were running on the golf course.   She inadvertently clipped my heel from behind when we were running on the cart path and took me down like a cornerback making a great open field tackle.   Scraped up my leg and knees, and Dan was overly apologetic and Rosie came over to offer her sympathies as well.  No real harm done - it looked worse than it actually was.

PM - 4 shirtless miles with Finn after work

Not sure the cornerback/open field tackle analogy works for a guy barely cracking 130 lbs soaking wet... how bout a cheetah taking down a juvenile gazelle... hyena cross checking a baby antelope. Sorry, maybe I got too caught up in your story ;-)

Registered for the Boston Marathon for October.  Have to wait to see if it will be accepted.  My age in October will be 55 which moves me to a standard "BQ" qualifying time of 3:35.    I submitted my Grandma's marathon effort from 2019 of 3:13.   Hopefully that will be sufficiently under the standard for my age-group to get me in.    Although I have officially run the race 6 times - I have been trying to run it for the last 3 years since my daughter started law school in Boston and actually lives on Commonwealth Ave - but with a heart issue in 2018, and then all of the disruptions of Covid - the opportunity never came.  Now, she will actually graduate this May - before I get the chance to possibly run!

I guy I used to work for used to tell of how he was out west somewhere in the army and his superior office would shout "it's [whatever temperature] in the shade and their ain't no [expletive] shade!" I do like low humidity, which for Bret might be in the 70s? and for you, Rob, in the low teens? Lower? It was in the 50% range here (glorious), though it has been a very mild summer in Michigan so far. Upper 40s tonight! (Well below normal).

Peachtree Road Race - 10K.   - originally the plan was for Richie to make a trip from Florida to run together- but his plans changed last minute - and he could not make it.   As it happened I had picked up his race number - and Dan did not have a race entry - so he ran with Richie's number.

Dan has been nursing a calf problem - so he did not want to push too hard and seeing as we only have a few weeks before he relocates to Virginia - we decided not to race but to run it with a decent but conservative effort.   Had a great time   We were conversational most of the whole course.   Very small spectating crowd from a normal Peachtree race - and much smaller field - though this was the first of 2 race days - to accommodate for Covid.

I think we averaged just over 7:15 pace and in the last .2 miles we ran sub 6 mins for fun.   Really enjoyed this one.

Nice racing to you as well. We had 10000 in our race - but compared to a normal year of 50000 it was a noticeably smaller crowd.

AM -  6 miles with Dan and Finn - we finished up on the former golf course behind my property which is finally being converted to a passive park with trails - contractors are out there setting up to remove the old concrete cart paths - and to install a different type of walking / running / hiking path, with crushed granite.   Look forward to them getting this project finished so that I can resume use of the park which is currently closed to the public.  It is still very overgrown and we passed over some poison ivy and I picked up at least one tick on my leg that I noticed during my post run stretching.

AM - 14 miles with Greg on the Alpharetta Greenway before sunrise.  Whenever I run with him - it ends up being much faster than if I ran solo particularly on long runs. I think we averaged under 8 min miles for the first 10 until t declared that my HR was much closer to a tempo effort in the warm extreme humidity than a long run pace.   But perhaps this is a good training approach - we shall see.

It's funny, sometimes it's great with training partners but sometimes it's detrimental (as many things in life it goes a few ways). I follow the Hanson runners on Strava and I think some of the women just get pushed too hard when they aren't ready on longer runs (coming back from injury).

I do miss training partners for a few runs a week though even though I'm mostly solo to the bone. My first trainer partners had easy paces of about 6:30 pace and the other around 7:30 pace. I never ran easy runs much faster than 8:00-8:30 even though I was capable of it. Long runs were always interesting, especially when they would want to run at reasonable adult hours :-)

That humidity is a killer though. You can feel great until you don't. It's been extremely mild in Michigan this summer, though we don't have anything close to what you have even in the worst of times.

From Bret on Wed, Aug 18, 2021 at 11:52:54 from 99.1.32.252

Yeah Jason - I know the prescription / and intended purpose of the long run is time on your feet at an aerobic effort - and clearly today I was pressing the envelope. But at the same time, perhaps because of my age and wanting to be able to get to the starting line uninjured, I have not done any mid-week workouts such as tempo or speed. So....in a way - I feel as though if I alternate long runs at aerobic effort with long-ish runs at tempo effort every other week, it may have a good training affect.

We shall see.

Yikes. What does that mean for a recovery time?

From Bret on Wed, Sep 29, 2021 at 06:26:22 from 99.1.32.252

Mike - the doctor's said - "hey you can walk jog even tomorrow and resume with moderate running within a week if you feel up to it...just no heavy lifting with the right arm where the inserted the catheter through the artery for the procedure."

Boston is less than 2 weeks away. They did not rule out that I could even do that if I kept the effort reasonable.

So I walked and jogged 3 miles this morning less than 24 hours after the procedure.

Pretty amazing right?

125th Boston Marathon.

Less than 2 weeks ago I had to have a stent implanted in the left anterior descending artery - the second such implant in less than 3 years for a recurrent signficant blockage.   At the time, I was quite disappointed and frustrated that it would probably mean that it would not be recommended that I consider running this event so soon after the procedure.   The first time around they recommended no running for 7 days and then only permitted 3 miles per day for 6 weeks.  But much to my surprise, both of my cardiologists said that with as much running as they were aware that I have been doing - they said that as long as I was feeling up to it, they saw no undue risk in my participation in the Boston Marathon.

Honestly I was a little bit nervous about how I would be feeling and frankly whenever I told people that I was running so soon after the procedure, they were understandibly either surprised that my doctors were onboard with it, amazed that I would be able to recover so quickly, or questioned whether it would be too risky.  But I did see my cardiologist on Friday who confirmed the "green light" to participate and wished me good luck.

Each day of running post procedure has been an incremental improvement.  However, I could feel that I was not fully there yet to how I would normally feel, fitnesswise a few days before race.   In fact on Saturday morning - in an "easy" run of about 4 miles - I was running about 8:45 pace - but my HR was proably a good 15 bpm faster than I would normal see on that type of an effort a few days before the event.   It was way better than it was 5 days earlier, but I expected to have a difficult time running any type of pace below 8 mins per mile on race day without my HR being near threshold.  And I really did not want to push myself into anaerobic HR - which for me is around 161-163 bpm, so soon after the procedure - at least not for any signficant period of time in the race (e.g. like maybe in the last few hundred yards or on the hills of Newton).

In any event, things turned out a bit better for much of the race than I had expected.

Due to COVID - the race directors set up some new protocols.  Everyone was required to have proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID test in order to pick up a race number.   A wrist band was affixed and was required to be worn the whole weekend until after the race as confirmation of the above.   Aside from the elite competitions, the remainder of the participants would not have a traditional corrall/wave line up at the start.  Everyone was assigned a bus pick-up time from Boston Common - and then when your bus arrived at Hopkinton - you were shuttled about a mile to the starting area, and told that you could begin when you were ready - in a rolling start fashion after the elite competitors' races had all commenced.

I arrived about 15 mins early for my bus pick up time, and ended up loading onto a bus with folks who were in the bus pick up wave ahead of my schedule - each of them having red bib numbers and mine was white.   The bib numbers and colors were to correspond to the qualifying times - with the faster qualifiers being given early pick up times.   So, when I got to the starting area - the men's elite race was just about to start, and then the volunteers asked that the red bib numbers be allowed to roll into their starts, before the white bibs.   I probably had about 10 mins standing to the side before we were permitted to begin.

In a way, I kind of liked that approach.   No lengthy time congregating at the middle school track infield, no standing in corrals until the race gun goes off, no long speeches or instructions.   I did however miss chatting in the corrals to runners around me, and listening to the national anthem and generally getting excited for the race to start.

Once I was underway, I ran completely by feel for the first few miles - as my garmin watch was not synced well with the mile markers for autolapping at every mile - (in some places it was as much as .40 miles behind) all I used the watch for was to check on my HR.   Unfortunately because I kind of started with the faster qualifiers, I really did not have the opportunity to latch onto a group of runners to settle into a pace.   I felt like I was being passed by runners or being left in the dust by those in front of me.  So that meant I just had to run my own race.

I knew that I was running sub 8 min pace early and I did my best to keep the HR at or sliightly above 150.  But I was so excited to be there and was really enjoying how well I was feeling - that I allowed myself to just run at a perceived comfortable effort - and if on occassion it felt a little uncomfortable, I would check the watch and generally it would show my HR creeping up close to 157 or 158 and I would back-off for a few minutes.

There was some drizzle before the start and low cloud cover for the early part of the race, but it was humid and in the low to mid 60's with forecasts to bring in some sun and clouds and low 70's.   As a result I knew I would likely pay for my early exhuberance when I had to start climbing the hills after mile 16 and the temperatures would begin to rise.

As I had expected, but had optimistically hoped would not happen, my efforts up the hills, though measured and conservative, caused my HR to push all the way up to 163 and by the time I crested Heartbreak at Boston College, the sun was out and I was a bit cooked.   At that point I had 5 or so miles left, and decided to back-off partly because I really was starting to feel the wheels coming off (and it was less of a choice) and partly because I was concerned about putting too much pressure on my cardio system.   So when I got to perhaps mile 23, I even walked a little bit to allow the HR to drop down and then I did so again at least 2 more times before the finish.

With less than a mile to go, I heard my daughter Riley call out my name as we went under the tunnel/overpass just before the turn onto Hereford Street and looked up to see my wife and waved to her as well.   I soaked in the last half mile down Boylston at a pedestrian effort - but happy to see the finish finally in sight.

With the exception of feeling a little rough over the last few miles and slowing a bit, and given the circumstances of the recent medical procedure - was quite pleased with the result.  Interestingly, I just missed a qualifying time by 31 seconds.

Thanks guys. I had not made the number correlation with Brady's TD pass record - but actually was watching that game when Evans inadvertently gave the ball to a fan in the stands after scoring - and then later watching his face with realization of what he'd done when he was told, and then the efforts to relieve the ball by negotiating with the guy. Very entertaining.

2021 New York City Marathon -  This race was not on my radar two weeks ago - but Richie who I have known now for nearly 20 years and have run literally all over the world with in races and training runs reached out to me as a long time donor for Team for Kids and offered me a spot in the event along with several other of his friends who were running as well.  He's very generous and keeps people connected and over the years from time to time, he's gotten either me or my daughter into the race (which is difficult to do under the lottery system).  He's also very sentimental and wants get folks together to enjoy the race weekend.  Some years it is his old high school cross country team friends and other years it is coworkers or friends from his neighborhood.

This year was particularly special because one of Richie's old high school runner teammates, Anthony - who I got to meet and run a few times with, tragically was killed in a cycling accident late this summer.   Richie was very close to him, and his family who live in Pennsylvania.   At the funeral, Anthony's son, Danny who is a senior at UVA and a very good runner in his own right - told Richie that he wanted to run a marathon in his Dad's memory.   So Richie had a part in making that happen at NY this year.

We all met on Saturday evening for a big family style dinner at an Italian restaurant in NYC and I got to meet Danny and to reconnect with Richie's old high school friends, several of whom I have run with in the past - but who were not running this year.  It was the nice to meet Danny - talk to him about his dad and to connect with a few other new participants in this year's event.

Because of Richie's long time donor status, he was invited to a shakeout run with Meb Keflezighi - on Friday morning before the race.  We've each met and talked to Meb before, but because of the small group who were invited to the shakeout run, Richie got to spend some time talking to Meb - and the even exchanged phone numbers.  Turns out Meb moved to the Tampa area where Richie is located.

On the morning of the race as we were exiting the Team for Kids tent, Meb who had given a short speech to the runners a little earlier, walked over to Richie calling him by name, to wish him good luck in the race - which prompted Richie to introduce everyone to Meb including Danny - and he told Meb the story of Danny and of the loss of his father.   Meb was so moved by the story - he leaned in for a hug with Danny and told him that when he was running today, to think of his dad and how proud he would be.   You could not have scripted it better - and certainly you could have orchestrated that meeting, but it was completely unplanned and so authentic - and emotional.

Danny had a great day - and ran 2:58 in his debut marathon.  Yes, I am certain that his dad would have been very proud.

Anyway....My race - which was less important in my view, was decent, with a little trouble in the second half due to dehydration.  Richie and I tried to run with each other.  And we were feeling very good at about 7:50 pace for the first half - some miles faster than that, some a bit slower.  We enjoyed the scene over the bridge and the crowds in Brooklyn.  The day was cool at the start, but there was bright sunshine.

My youngest daughter lives in Brooklyn now, and the race course literally goes along the cross street (Bedford) to her apartment just about mile 11.   My middle daughter from Boston, travelled down and they were assembled to cheer for us as we got to her neighborhood.   Richie deposited a hooded sweatshirt with them, as they were planning to hop on the subway and meet us at the finish.

Shortly after we arrived at the halfway mark, my heart-rate shot up to 168 going over the Pulaski Bridge and I got concerned, and told Richie I needed to back off the pace a bit.   We slowed to a little over 8 min pace, and then as we started up the 59th Street Bridge at mile 15 - we fist bumped and he took off - hoping to run a BQ which we were slightly slower than he needed at that point.

My pace up 1st Avenue was around 8:15 to 8:20 but when I got to mile 20 and the Willis Ave Bridge, my HR hit 170 and I think that's when I started having trouble with leg cramps.   Dehydration perhaps from the bright sunshine, and not taking in enough fluids on the cool day, resulted in leg spasms that would cause me to stop and walk to keep the cramps from locking up. The last 10k was pretty much stop and start running/walking to manage the cramping.   Not very enjoyable.  But I persevered and made it across the finish for the 11th time in NYC.

Sorry for the struggles with your race, but what an experience - thanks for sharing, Bret.

That was great Bret. It didn't even occur to me that you might be running New York. I'm thinking maybe just you and Shalane Flanagan did Boston and New York this year!

I've run with Richie quite a few times! Small world. That is a wonderful story, and thank you for sharing! That's a special son to do something like that. He'll never forget that moment with Meb I bet. I am impressed you were able to run another marathon so quickly. I hope you all had a fun time in NYC, even if the logistics to get to the start line are tough. :)

From Mark on Tue, Nov 09, 2021 at 16:43:14 from 108.191.16.124

Congratulations on another good marathon even if there were some struggles, sounds like overall much more good than bad that day. I'd love to go back and try NYC again, didn't go so well for me in 2017 but still look back at it fondly. My brother and his daughter got to meet Meb in Corning NY when they were there for the Wineglass Marathon. He always seems willing and eager to interact, really gives back to the running community.

I always think of you when I think of the NYC marathon, Bret. I remember you sitting in the airport when it was canceled due to Sandy (I think I might have been traveling to Philly to see Megan at the time). A fantastic writeup and glad Richie got to run in his Dad's memory. That's a great way to remember someone.

From Bret on Thu, Nov 11, 2021 at 07:59:28 from 99.1.32.252

Thanks everyone...it was a good experience and it was not just about the run.

Mike, it is a small world indeed, I suspected that you and Richie may have crossed paths in St. Pete at some point in time.

Rob - lol! Shalane is amazing - she averaged in the 2:30's for all of those majors this Fall!

Mark - Meb is a true ambassador for the sport in the way Bill Rodgers was back in the day - and not only that - he just seems like a good person, sharing positive vibes with everyone he encounters.

Jason - you have a long memory! NYC has been my most frequently run marathon by far - and it is a special event. I would encourage anyone to give it a try if you have the opportunity - it is unlike any other.

AM - just 4 this morning with Finn - temps right around freezing - went to the Falcons Thursday night game and got in a little later (but not too late, as there was no need to stay much past half-time).   Left hamstring is still tight and a bit painful if I open up with any type of real pace - so I have been keeping the effort light and doing lots of stretching and yoga.   I suspect I am a little dinged-up as a result of 2 marathons in 4 weeks.

AM - 5k run with my family and Finn around the neighborhood - only 3 of us decided to go this year and we opted not to awake super early to do the Atlanta Thanksgiving day 5k.   But we had a nice relaxed pace and conversation.  Riley's recovery from a foot stress fracture is coming along well with no symptoms today in her new Hokas.  Delaney was in much better fitness than she expected - but she lives in Brooklyn now and is walking much more having sold her car and she's been playing soccer with a local coed league.  I made cinnamon rolls and maple rolls for breakfast afterward and enjoyed coffee with the rest of our house guests watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

Happy Thanksgiving!

AM - 6 miles with Finn before sunrise.   Ran slightly faster and had slightly less discomfort in the hamstrings.   Did less "extra" strengthening exercise yesterday - as I think some of them that I did on the weekend, may have fatigued the muscles a bit.

Went to PT this morning following my run - and interestingly, there was little to not pain on the insertion point (proximal tendon) but some tightness in the belly of the hamstring.   The physical therapist thought that was a little unusual too...in any event, she did some dry needling of the tight spots and some massage - and we went through a few new exercises to strengthen the muscle and tendon.   I expect this to be a lengthy process with some gains and losses day by day.

AM - Went to the trails to do a walk run with Finn, but got a text from Greg just as I got started to see if anyone want to run - so I did a mile easy with Finn as a warm-up of sorts and then when Greg arrived we ended up running fairly well with my hamstring not giving me too much trouble for the first 5-6 miles - which were just under 8 min pace - and then we stopped for his dog to jump in the creek and when we resumed the hamstring kinda tightened up and either it was fatigued or the stop/start thing had an impact - but it became apparent that the pain level went from a 2 to a 6 or 7 and I needed to back off the pace.   After one or two starts and stops to walk, I bid Greg a Happy New Year and he took off and I finished with a jog back to my vehicle the short way around - and called it a day.   Somewhat crestfallen with how well I was running to sort of have the wheels come off at the end.  If I had just finished the run at 5 miles I would have been very pleased with the day and the progress.  Anyway - I expect to have a number of these set backs - and will take it all in stride.   Happy New Year.

This was day 670 on my run streak.
