| Wellsville Ridge XC ski today. Probably last day of the year for it, pretty wet snow. I registered a running club up here in Logan with USATF looking to get some others interested in running together more. We have a small little group and get a few good trail runs in here and there, but it would be nice to get some people to push each other. Anyhow, I registered four Boston Marathon Teams and with the help of some FRB folks we have some pretty good teams for this race.

| Medium distance run average 6:53 pace. Today I got my scoped again since it's been almost a year since the ACL. The doc says it's perfect and can't believe the change. What's this mean? A year ago with a torn ACL, the medical solution was surgery. Knee surgery is pretty controversial though, even for severe tears. Deciding not to do it was tough and meant a big change in running and some frustrating time doing things that I'd rather spend time running. But it worked. I also think the year has shown me that as you get older you cannot just run to stay fit. You have to pay attention to strength training and keep your body balanced. Stretching is important no matter what the latest studies show.

| I had a Salt Lake overnight Friday for work and I wanted a medium distance run at 7 min pace so I agreed to run as a pacer for the 1:30 time for American Flyers. This was the first time ever running as a pacer for me, I've hung out with the group before, and I enjoyed it. Their pace strategy is computer generated and takes into account uphills and downs. Basically the idea is that an average runner is going to take the hit on an uphill and speed up a little on the down. It was a bit harder for me this morning because you tend to train this out of yourself as you get faster. But it was awesome running a race relaxed and at a pace backed off from usual. With all the hills on this course there were some 6:35s and a few over 7, and these paces are on a pace band that you wear. With a smaller race like this it's possible nobody will run a 1:30 so I didn't know how it would go. About three of us held in a group through mile 6. Walter was just itching to bust out a fast race and I kept telling him to run the 1:30 pace and take off for 3 good miles at the end. It's too close to Boston. The lead woman ran with me until about 8 and then faded at the hills. At mile 11 the guy in third place was walking up the big hill but fell in again immediately behind me. We crossed the finish just a second under time.
Ran an easy 5 tonight in the warm sun in Phoenix.

| ice run in Denver before class. Four days ago I was awarded promotion to Captain with my airline. Pilots work their life basically to get to this point. Great news except testing for it is today through next Friday. Right through Boston Monday. I worked every angle on delay. No luck. Finally, today meeting with program directors they told me I could accept on this date or not upgrade. So I'll miss Boston. Last time an airline told me a similar thing I walked out and picked up a job with Frontier. It was the best choice I made career wise, so I'm thinking this through a lot today. It's not that it's a race, it's that when you start making decisions based on priorities, you generally start a path that governs what your life is. I don't like a job that becomes your life. Thats why I fly in the first place. Pretty depressing day. |

| I spent an awesome Sunday with the kids until about 10pm which meant I had to drive to Denver through the night since I missed the last flight. I made it to school 30 minutes before class started and spent most of the class morning following Boston through the text apps in between taking tests. Super busy day. Headed out for a run about 7pm but the tank was empty and I made it a short effort. |
