Woke up with a ridiculous cold today. It's been a long time since I had one of these. That means I can't go to work, bummer. I'm going to head south for Lake Powell then for a few days. Should be warmer running down there.

Tried to burn it out, I seem to have fair luck with that. Spit run at the gym today with Brett. 10 tempo at 6min pace, 500 swim, 6easy.

I camped at the lake and ran 24 miles into Buckskin Gulch, Lake Powell and still didn't reach the end of this incredible slot canyon reported to be the longest in the world.  I think I was within a mile or two though.  Incredible running at 50 degrees up along the rock rim and down through the slot.  With temps like this I was able to run this light today with only a Mt Dew and some Fig Newtons.  Kept it slow and just took it all in.  This has to be one of the top five trails I've ever ran.  Tonight I'm going to try and sneak down to the Res and do a night run through Antelope Canyon.  No idea what the Navahos do if they catch you at that.  Might have to go to work tomorrow night which would mean catching a flight out of Page so I have to get in here what I can.  I took some video today running the terraces and the canyon.  Can't wait to see it.

Spent the day boating along the Wawheap area of Powell and getting the boat into storage. Afternoon I took the kayak out heading South. Not a boat on the lake tonight which I have never experienced, water was glass. I did the longest kayak trip I have ever done, 11 miles past Glenn Canyon through Antelope down into Navajo. Had to portage the kayak six times, once over a mile and a half As exhausted as I can ever remember being. It was warm at first but after 11pm the temp dropped fast and the water spraying over the front was freezing on my face and hands. A few hours later I was covered in a coat of ice but loving every minute. Just unreal experience. Seven hours as hard as I could go.

Supposed to be off in Texas today running a cool trail race but family things kept me home. On the flip side it meant a much more relaxed few days with the kids. We spent four hours in the Layton wave pool last night.

Good V02 max workout today with 6X1miles and 8X100s for a little speedwork. I am continually amazed this year how far out if shape I have allowed myself to get.

Spent the afternoon at the high school open meet at Utah State hanging out with the Mantzes. Claire got fourth in the 1600 with a great start and Conner ran an awesome 1600 taking first. Wished I had had time to hang out through the rest of the day to watch. I had time to catch up with Corbin Tally and Bill Cobler. The Alta coach and his team were probably sleeping in, or spending the day reading weekend obituaries.

Being rather tired of hating the cold and fearing a good run in it, I left the kids at my parents tonight for a few hours and did a long night run. 12 degrees, hot hand packets gripped in my gloves, and I froze. Eyelashes freezing together, face numb, back of my jacket frozen into a solid sweat shield by the end. But I made it.

Thanks! I'm pretty much just running what I feel is fun every week. Next race will be the 50k in Moab. First Ultra and I'd rather not run it looking like a dork. It's a very competitive trail race. I'd like to enjoy it but still be able to run it decent.

From Superfly on Thu, Jan 23, 2014 at 09:39:01 from 74.211.21.81

I ran that race a few years back. Loved it... but I took several wrong turns and it cost me the win. So pay close attention to the trail. I just had my head down running hard... then was 1.5 miles off the race trail.

But I love Moab and that course is super pretty. If I wasn't running PHX marathon March 1st I'd be tempted to come do Moab again.

From Steve on Thu, Jan 23, 2014 at 15:54:59 from 66.87.112.49

I didn't know you ran that. That must have been in one of it's first years. It has grown pretty popular now. Mackey will be running this year (North Face runner who holds R2R2R record) as well as a couple Wasatch 100 winners. I did a wrong turn in the trail championships in Moab a few months ago too. Throws off your whole game.

From Steve on Thu, Jan 23, 2014 at 16:07:41 from 66.87.112.49

I just looked up your race report. What a bummer. They have a new course now. It's funny when I look at some of you guys's race reports that you have more race experience than I have. I've only ran since turning 40. I always think of you as the young guys.

First Circuit race of the year and I had a good time with this one.  We were staying with the Murphys this weekend and this gave me a chance to catch up on old times with Rob and get in this race.  I knew that I would get a good butt kicking since I haven't done any real training yet and haven't felt that old energy for the road racing, but today brought a lot of that back.  Time to set aside some of the trail fun and get training.  This will be the best year for Masters on the Circuit ever.

5 mile warm up.  The race felt really fast for me, seeing over 17 at the finish line was a surprise.  But that's to be expected seeing how the first mile was faster than I have ran since the Alta race last Fall.  It was a ton of fun and I'm excited to have something to push hard for now.  The Masters are competitive this year!  Rob ran a great 5k, pulling a 17:50 out of nowhere.  Steve Ash looked way smooth.  He's going to have a good year.  Sasha is as steady as a rock, the usual.  Walter is pretty much the man at the longer distance stuff.  Dennis can come out 50 and still show us all who's boss.  Scott is going to have to be the target.  :-)  He's in a league of his own right now.

3.8 at lunch taping video with the Boston crowd.

Cold run in Trenton, New Jersey. Not going to be much time for running this week. My grandfather had a stroke Friday and has steadily been getting worse. I was the last person who had a conversation with him. The man lived a life of spirit, a construction explosives expert, a logger, a small business owner, a guy who defined every bit of who I decided I wanted to be. I really have no idea what life will feel like if he won't be around any more.

My grandfather might make it through this stroke. Probably not leave a wheelchair again and with half his body paralyzed life has changed. Had a two hour break today from sitting with him at the hospital and went down to the Oval for a workout. What a strange feeling that was, to leave there and go run intervals. It will be a while before I complain about how slow I am again.

Yasso 800s tonight. Time to begin shaking off the long, fun running I've been doing and work on some turn over. Also need a benchmark of where I stand. 2 mile warm up, 10X800 2:43 to 2:47, identical rest between, two mile cool down. Steady run and according to the calculator that puts me about 2:48 marathon shape. I'm guessing that's about right.

Yeah, I forgot to include him above. Last week Walter asked me what I thought guys would be running and I told him Tracy would run a 1:10 or 1:11. He ended up running a 1:11 and he is legit. Trains like crazy and well respected.

I think the only way to clean this stuff up is test the top 5 in every championship until it's cleaned up. One of my friends in Dallas working in sports medical says they are dealing with all kinds issues with guys trying to handle the side effects of these drugs. Recreational over 40 athletes. Women our age don't seem to have the same problem.

I got your message, I'll give you a call later. I'm working through the afternoon late today. I am planning on that race still. It would be fun to spend some time with you there.

Most of the people on that list are just plain stupid (for getting caught). The best way to make/keep things clean is

1) Test all the top finishers at championships and prize money events, like you said

2) Biological passport w/ out of competition testing

Unfortunately those things cost $$$ (esp the passport system) which would take away from prize money, and potentially would deter events from wanting to host championships.

Its a tough situation and there aren't easy solutions.

From Steve on Mon, Feb 03, 2014 at 15:15:18 from 66.87.82.212

Yep, test them all. It's pretty cheap. EPO is the biggest cheat right now and easy to test. Publish results so race directors don't have to give them money. I'm tested every six months as a pilot. Not a big deal and cheap to do. I'm not sure what the biological passport is. I'm going to look at that.

From Steve on Mon, Feb 03, 2014 at 15:28:06 from 66.87.83.155

Just checked that out. What a great idea! I just think athletes should pay for it. Kind of like a professional license. If you are interested in collecting money or in national titles you hold the license. Years back I started flying for a company out of Chicago. In order to fly in and out of that airport I had to agree to pay for certification badge. That badge had a background check, fingerprinting, and drug tests. I had to carry the cost if I wanted to make money there. I don't work there any more but the program still operates.

From Jake K on Mon, Feb 03, 2014 at 15:32:27 from 199.190.170.22

I don't necessarily think its THAT cheap to test. Maybe relative to bigtime pro sports, but it would take a chunk out of a running event's budget. You're probably talking a couple thousand dollars to test the Top 5 M/W at a race, plus you need coordination w/ a local lab.

Now if USATF/USADA partnered w/ some central mainstream laboratory in a situation like you suggested, I bet the price could drop exponentially.

But that's not going to happen. I don't think anyone wants to blow the system up. Tyson Gay was banned almost a year ago... we still don't know what for.

Steve, saw this article and it made me worry about expeditions like yours last year where you took a huge group across the Grand Canyon. Might want to avoid big, inexperienced groups in the future or all of us may be shut out. Goal number one: minimize impact, don't attract attention.

Jeff, I hadn't heard that. That's sad. I deleted most of my comments on this master's drug thing because there's just too many uncertainties and you can cause too much hate even by pointing a finger, but it's a serious mess.

Jon, that's an interesting article. We do have to be careful how we use these lands. I have a lot of problems with this thing though. Those lands, like all national parks, belong to the people. Park services have ran into a lot of problems restricting these parks which they have no right to do. It's not an exaggeration to say that a lot of park service people would like to restrict the entire canyon so that you could just look down into it from the rim. I've talked to some of those.

I also have seen none of the things described by the negative comments. Runners are not sleeping on benches, mobbing Phantom Ranch, pushing hikers off trails, leaving trash, and being rude. I have seen a lot of what was described by the other paragraph, hikers high fiving you, increased attention and respect for national parks, rangers helping us with RV repairs and even free camping.

I also think there is a push from NPS for extra staffing and some of their publicity about runners is to get staffing back and start pouring some money into the corridor. That would be a good thing.

From Steve on Tue, Feb 04, 2014 at 11:56:17 from 66.87.65.142

I've been thinking about this canyon thing through the morning. When we do run this again this article is something we will all read and talk about. I think two things that made a big difference with our group run was letting the Park Service know we were going to be there, involving them in our planning, and cutting out runners quick who couldn't make it.

A natural human trend when you have something neat is to hide it or posses it. I'm not into that, I hate it. If I had the ability I would get every American I could off their asses and video games and into our National Parks. We need to teach our kids how to respect them and use our schools to teach them the history of them. Every person in that group now has a better understanding of how amazing that canyon is. They will be involved in defending and protecting it. They'll take their kids to it. It's one more step away from the live in your living room, buy and throw away, Wal-Mart mentality in our country. I hope to get a group to run East to West this year.

From Jon on Tue, Feb 04, 2014 at 17:00:50 from 65.207.165.18

Steve,

I completely agree that more people should be doing these activities, not fewer. And technically, it is "our" land. That being said, as Death Valley just showed, one ticked off government bureaucrat or park worker can shut down the whole thing. Very selfish and stupid to shut people out, but they can do it. And that makes it so all future runners can't do the Big Ditch.

Glad to hear you'll be going again. Per the above link, hopefully your group doesn't get too big and unwieldy. I don't think I'd do the run in a group bigger than 4 and really keep our impact to a minimum.

Last thought- you said last time you guys coordinated your RV parking with the rangers and had their numbers in case of problems. My thought is that even talking to them before attracts attention, not sure if good or not. And while they let you park against normal rules (as dumb as I think those rules are), I could imagine the park chief showing up and being annoyed, not knowing you arranged it, and making some impactful new rules. Not trying to get anyone upset, just sharing my perspective and fears. We all want to keep the GC open so we can keep running it. My view is small groups of experienced runners who don't attract any attention is the best way to do that. Not sure if big groups with quite a few runners who don't make it fits the bill.

Anyways, my two cents. Your thoughts?

Enjoy.

From Steve on Tue, Feb 04, 2014 at 20:04:29 from 66.87.79.129

I love this kind stuff, I could talk about it all day. :-) I get the opportunity to run in a lot of strange places. I consider it "other people's land". If you take the chance to talk to them beforehand and you are well prepared, things go much smoother. I think the problem of national parks right now is that even though the sedentary population is growing larger, more people do nothing than ever before, the percentage of people who are extremely fit is growing. The amount of people who are out there in the wilderness doing freaky cool stuff is growing. The Park Service can handle visitors, gawkers, the ones who look from the railing and then go to the gift shop. Now they are dealing with runners who travel farther and faster in their own parks than they do. Nearly all are in better shape than they are and have more experience on trails and survival than they do. It's incredibly hard for a person in that situation to admit they have to step up their game. The natural instinct is to fight back, to find fault in what they are doing. When I first ran in the canyon my reaction was to fight back. You can see that in my first R2R2R report. I've since come to the belief that you can get the rangers interested in what you're doing. You find they are more interested in working with people who can read topo maps, know the weather, and are prepared physically than another set of tourists. In fact this Spring a ranger will be running with us on our R2R2R, off the clock of course.

As far as camping and rules go, there was no other solution on that trip. PS is trying different options for North Rim management. This Fall they closed the campgrounds but kept the gift shop open. Since camping is only permitted in campgrounds that shut down all overnight hikers and runners. Nobody was happy with it. The rangers thought it was stupid. The best route was talking to the rangers about what we were doing. I think as PS gets more exposure to this canyon running they will support it more. I hope maybe by working with them they understand us more.

I don't believe in controlling impact by limiting use of public lands. I don't think we touch the trails enough. When I lived in Switzerland I discovered the Swiss hiking. Families hiked every evening and weekends as groups. I have pictures of hikes we did as groups of fifty. It's no surprise to me that when you get deep into the canyon it's Germans and Swiss you run into. They love the land. The future of our land use comes from more exposure to the trails, not in controlling them. Just my two cents.

But I'm learning lots right now with all this. In a few weeks I'll be running my first ultra, well, kind of-a 50k. It's along the trails in Moab that I've done since I was a little kid, Gemini Bridges, Poison Spider, and Pritchett. I don't know if I'll love it or not. But Moabs one of those places that has shown it can take almost every kind of land abuse and survive.

From Walter on Wed, Feb 05, 2014 at 00:10:20 from 97.36.254.190

I agree with Jake. I think they should test the top 5 finishers that are in the money. I won $600.00 for 5th so I told the Race director I would be happy to do a post race test ASAP at a fair testing center if he made the other 4 in front of me test. Then I can feel better against watching Kevin run the way he did. I have never run a half marathon where the leader had a 30 second lead on me at mile one. My first mile was 5:13. The guy is on something! Those aren't 40 year old legs. Lol

First trail running overnight in a while. I slept on the side of the trail using my large camp blanket wrapped around me like a cacoon. I'd like to do a couple of long trail runs this summer that require overnights on the trail and I gotta get used to what this takes. Left an airhole on the end, but you gotta wonder what the CO2 is like through the night doing this. It hit maybe 38 in the night so I was pretty warm. I've used this before in my Jeep to make it through -28 nights in Colorado and it works great. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep since I was huddled in there typing a few responses back to some runners upset about a R2R2R that we are looking at running as a group again this Spring. Next time I gotta leave the phone. Got up this morning and ran back down to the hotel with just a few minutes to spare to get to work.

Too many Robs. :-) Almost as many as Steve. Still love to catch a run there with you. Jeff, I understand their position. Walter caused a ruckus by the invite amount, not intentional. I also cannot agree though with anyone's position that they can run a trail but some other person can't. If anyone is the least bit honest in this, that's what it's about.

From Rob on Thu, Feb 13, 2014 at 08:58:18 from 63.235.131.194

I initially thought they were legitimate concerns but it started becoming apparent that it really was just a power struggle. They really feel entitled and don't want to share it with everyone. I think they feel it will somehow diminish their achievement if "everyone" else goes and does it.

From Steve on Thu, Feb 13, 2014 at 23:44:29 from 66.87.126.217

A group of guys running the Canyon is a trail run like any other. There's always risk. You don't do anything significant without occasionally getting close to the edge. I don't mind advice, or even someone telling me I'm not good enough for something, but I'm not keen on sitting on my butt while things degrade into name calling and folks getting angry because they can't control someone else. You start posting stuff that isn't true and belittling others, I think it's gone too far. If standing up against that pisses some off, so be it. This is just running.

The funny thing about it is how they seem to think only the super human elite can go jog down a dirt trail. It's not a race, when you get tired stop, when you get thirsty drink. I realize this is a technical challenging course but it's not like you invited a group of cub scouts. Everyone on the list is an experienced runner. It turned into a really weird thing, are these people just anti Walter?

From Steve on Fri, Feb 14, 2014 at 08:05:55 from 66.87.127.172

Or if you get stuck you spend the night. It's not a life or death thing. Everyone already knows this. You might be right about Walter stirring it up. Running is a place where all that can be set aside. Doesn't matter who you are running with, or what your differences are. It's one of the few places you just leave it all.

From Steve on Fri, Feb 14, 2014 at 08:14:08 from 66.87.127.172

As far as Walter goes, he gets a lot of flak. Maybe even a lot from me in the past. I'll tell you what, he has a heart of gold. I've watched him set his entire life aside to help a beginning runner. Over months of time. He's driven up several times from Salt Lake and stocked up my fridge unasked when he knew I was getting home from a trip and would be picking up my kids. He has a genuine interest in other people's lives which is beyond rare. He enjoys people's company just for the base sake of it. I've learned a lot from him. We also differ a great deal in our views or how we approach life and joke about that a lot.

I'll just throw in my two cents. I don't really give a damn one way or another - but I think what ticked a lot of people off is that the facebook post was like an advertisement for a keg party at a frat house. Its obvious to me that you guys know what you are doing and are going to have a 99% chance of success... but the invite didn't come off that way. And that is probably what set off the subsequent discussion (which in a lot of ways, when the extreme viewpoints were eliminated, was a good discussion).

From Steve on Fri, Feb 14, 2014 at 10:19:09 from 66.87.127.120

Yep, I think that's right. I invited about ten people, and maybe a couple of those would actually do it. The others just like to follow or catch up with me on some of these adventures so I include them. I don't know 500 people if I counted all their relatives, neighbors, and dogs. Last time the basic idea was inviting people to the run with a very basic amount of info, then working through it on the details with the small actual group interested. After that came calling up those who I didn't feel could do it and telling them no. I hated that. This time it came across like you said, a frat party invasion.

I felt within minutes of the event posting it should be taken down and approached in a different way. Walter felt he wanted to leave it up and air things out both sides. Probably good since I learned a lot. He pulled it off this morning and we'll see how we approach it in the future. But yeah, I agree with you, there were some good discussions mixed in there.

Every once in a jillion years you just get a perfect day. I had registered for the Moab 55k but when I got home late Thursday and picked them up I could tell they needed a different weekend than a long ultra run in Moab would let me give them. We headed south Friday with the kayaks and camped on the bluff above Lake Powell. In the morning I woke up the kids filling up our friends hot air balloon and they sat on the Jeep watching the set up. I don't think they breathed. After that morning we headed south to the Indian trading posts and National Parks between Flagstaff and Phoenix. All parks are free through Monday and we hit four of them. Tonight we ended with a night hike in the Superstition mountains East of Phoenix, 85 degrees.

I seriously think sometimes the most rewarding thing to experience in life is holding your kids attention for an entire day. I know it's like getting hit by a meteor though. The only thing more impossible than it happening is that is ever happens again.

Thanks Christie. Sometimes this whole running thing seems to fall short of the sacrifice it takes in family or relationship time. This weekend I let the run go that I really wanted to do, but it worked out. Honestly though, most other times I've let the family suffer.

Last night heading up on our night hike I noticed a race crew setting up on the trailhead and remembered that President's weekend is always the Lost Dutchman Marathon. So when we got back I caught some sleep and headed up to the bus pick up to beg an entry. The race director was more than willing, a ton of marathoners had changed to the half because of the high temp forecast. He also said he had flown in a few Kenyans to break the record and drop the Leaderboard times a little. LDM has a rep as being a way friendly group but a slow course. Eight miles of trail, rolling hills along Apache Junction, and some suburb running with a 180 around a cone.

I had no goals for the race although a few weeks ago I did a Yasso 800 predictor set which came out indicating I could do a 2:47. So that's what I shot for. The pace went out slow, I didn't have a Garmin on today but it felt good. The lead guys started picking it and left me. They were gone. I then ran with a group of trail runners from Boston and North Carolina. Pretty neat guys heading up after the race for a R2R2R Tuesday. I could feel the heat a bit by five miles, not a good sign, and prepared for a long morning. By thirteen miles the pack fell apart and I ran with one of the ultra runners from New England until mile 18. We were totally alone and talked mostly the whole time about all the Canyon running stuff that I've been thinking about the past two weeks. The hills hit hard though at mile 19 and he pulled ahead. I was worried a lot about bonking with the heat and that I had no marathon training essentially, and was slowing way down to work the hills and pouring water on my head. I was regaining some energy though by the end and am so happy to have a decent race again in the pathetic shape I'm in!

Mokono Lamech was the Kenyan who won, now a US citizen with Phoenix as a home. He was the winner of Grandmas Marathon 2012 in 2:13 and Victoria in 2:12. He barely got the record running a 2:18. Just a way nice guy and I spent a few hours talking to him, and the two ultra runners that sandwiched me, Eric Ahorn and Robert Shaffer. Mocono's main goal this year is the course record at Grandmas, so I look forward to watching that race again. The record is 2:09.

Stoked by this run. In the groove and on pace. Good idea where I stand and how to improve. Not a squeak at all from the knee which I attribute to strengthened hips, glutes and core from snowshoeing.

And it is cool to get a third with a slow 2:50. :-)

The kids and I then spent the afternoon kayaking the Salt River, Tonto National Park.

I think it might as a long run for me, one of those "fast finish" training ones guys are talking about. I was thinking today maybe run 18 at 7:30 pace, then pick up for 6-8. Long range temp forecast is 15 degrees cooler than this weekend was.

No running unless you count about six miles of hiking and three hours of kayaking. Kayaked the Salt River north of Phoenix with the kids and headed up to Flagstaff. Hiked the North and South Lava Trails in Sunset Crater Volcano National Park, then visited Wupatki National Park to hike the various Pueblo Indian ruins. These are incredible sites and I had a hard time getting the kids away from each one. They don't affect me as much as the ancient ruins east of Moab, or the Grand Canyon. We then headed up to Lake Powell and kayaked Antelope Canyon up to the Petroglyphs. After that we loaded back up and rode horses from Lone Rock to Big Water.

That is all.

We came within 27 miles of the South Rim visitors center. I could not figure out how to fit it in.

Quick report, more details later. Took a Cessna down to Grand Canyon Airport and joined a group of five for a canyon run. So nice to be there in two hours instead of seven. Low, cold overcast and had to do an instrument approach but the weather was showing consistent temps and clouds breaking up.

We ran from South Rim, Bright Angel Trail, the group was going R2R2R but I wanted a look at the section of Tonto towards Hermit so we split up at Indian Gardens. Very neat group and experienced. I took several ideas including carrying coconut water which one of them said helped stomach problems. Used a Camelback again and required no water stops from Indian Gardens back along the Tonto. Average temp though seemed around 52 degrees.

Rough climb back up with ridiculous sore quads from the marathon Saturday. Walked a few sections. Flew back, stopping only in Ceder City for a huge, greasy cheeseburger. Between Saturday and this morning I now only have one toenail left that is not black or in the process of falling off.

Spaghetti legs today. Good start but after a few miles had to back it off. Quickly discovered I could run about 6:05 today, any faster I started to crash, the legs just hurt. If I slowed down to 6:20 or so they recovered quick, so I tucked in just above 6 and waited for the finish. Rob passed me at 7 miles and wouldn't slow down to talk. Kassi chicked me. James flew by me. Great races today by Rob M and James Moore. Good to see Dennis pulling back from an injury too. I'm betting he will be setting a few new records by Fall. I had to bust out after the race quick to get my kids, not much time to say hi to anyone afterwards.

Trying to be careful with this race and not repeat 2012. Aimed to stay conservative on as near 6:20 as I could hold.

Awesome seeing everyone at the start! It started raining 6 minutes before the gun and didn't stop until 5 miles in. I had visions of last year's Ogden Marathon but it stopped as soon as it soaked my shoes completely. I spent six miles weaving through the most people who started fast that I have seen in a marathon. I should have placed a better start.

I felt great today. Probably could have pushed it harder but with a marathon two weeks ago and being out of shape, I was pretty nervous. From mile 8 on I was completely alone. The Utah guys were way ahead, nobody was behind me. I just tried to stick on as close to 6:20 pace as I could. Eight Utah guys in the top seventeen. Me being the slow one as usual.

Intense run today.  After waking up in the hostel I checked Intellicast for weather and watched the Central American radar for a few minutes.  I was a bit worried about temperatures at altitude and what to wear.  Summit temps showed 3C so I felt it would be fairly warm.  All in all, it was a perfect day to do this!  Had a great breakfast with a lot of Costa Rican hikers.  They were all hiking to base camp at 11,200 feet and staying overnight to summit the next day.  If you live at sea level a hike to 12,500 is something to think about.  I was most worried mosst about my fitness since I'd ran a marathon three days ago, getting lost, and what to wear.  I had about 8,000 feet to climb in 12 miles, and then back down.

The run up was awesome.  Costa Ricans are by far the fittest people in Central or South America, certainly Mexico.  On the trail they were fast and very well equiped.  I saw no Europeans or Americans at all today.  I really got my butt kicked today the entire time above 10,000 feet.  That's not that high!  I was dying and it took a lot of work especially above 11,000.  It may have been a combination of legs and altitude.  I ran through base camp about 2.5 hours and headed up.  The sun was blazing on top.  I could write so much about a trail run like this.  It's incredible.  But I'm so tired tonight.  This took me just over 6 hours to complete and I killed myself to even do that.  I ran out of water with 6k left.  A 60 ounce camelback is just not enough for six hours of running.

I learn a little bit more on every long run. This one pushed my limits. I don't know if it was just a tough one or what I've ran lately, but it took 100%.

Jeff, I'm slow this year. But way better than last year. I'm crawling back. Expect to kick my trash. Like Rob did a few weeks ago.

Went down to Moab for a weekend of trails, Jeeping, and a chance to spend a few days with Walter Brown's pacer group. For anyone who isn't familiar with pacers, these folks are seriously cool. For literally no return at all they nail pace times from 1:30 to 3:15 on a Half. They are some fit folks and I watched a ton of people profusely thanking them after the race. The more I see of these guys the more I believe they bring to the distance races.

I was going to pace the 1:30 but Walter found a guy last minute to do it so I just ran. I figured I could run at least 6 pace today for my first Tempo run since the marathon but just couldn't turn them over fast enough today. This was the windiest race I have ever ran too. Just a head down, gut it out morning. Really good races again by Josh and James.

Walter beat me simply because his frontal area is a third of mine.

I've been reading your blog. What kind of marathon training are you doing man? Surfing? Snowshoeing? Wake up and smell the coffee! You've got to run! I was a miler back in the 60s and 70s and I averaged 100/week.

We're talking about a MARATHON here. Have you ever run one?

Medium distance run average 6:53 pace.  Today I got my scoped again since it's been almost a year since the ACL.  The doc says it's perfect and can't believe the change.  What's this mean?  A year ago with a torn ACL, the medical solution was surgery.  Knee surgery is pretty controversial though, even for severe tears.  Deciding not to do it was tough and meant a big change in running and some frustrating time doing things that I'd rather spend time running.  But it worked.  I also think the year has shown me that as you get older you cannot just run to stay fit.  You have to pay attention to strength training and keep your body balanced.  Stretching is important no matter what the latest studies show.

Good day.

I had a Salt Lake overnight Friday for work and I wanted a medium distance run at 7 min pace so I agreed to run as a pacer for the 1:30 time for American Flyers.  This was the first time ever running as a pacer for me, I've hung out with the group before, and I enjoyed it.  Their pace strategy is computer generated and takes into account uphills and downs.  Basically the idea is that an average runner is going to take the hit on an uphill and speed up a little on the down.  It was a bit harder for me this morning because you tend to train this out of yourself as you get faster.  But it was awesome running a race relaxed and at a pace backed off from usual.  With all the hills on this course there were some 6:35s and a few over 7, and these paces are on a pace band that you wear.  With a smaller race like this it's possible nobody will run a 1:30 so I didn't know how it would go.  About three of us held in a group through mile 6.  Walter was just itching to bust out a fast race and I kept telling him to run the 1:30 pace and take off for 3 good miles at the end.  It's too close to Boston.  The lead woman ran with me until about 8 and then faded at the hills.  At mile 11 the guy in third place was walking up the big hill but fell in again immediately behind me.  We crossed the finish just a second under time.

Ran an easy 5 tonight in the warm sun in Phoenix.

ice run in Denver before class. Four days ago I was awarded promotion to Captain with my airline. Pilots work their life basically to get to this point. Great news except testing for it is today through next Friday. Right through Boston Monday. I worked every angle on delay. No luck. Finally, today meeting with program directors they told me I could accept on this date or not upgrade. So I'll miss Boston. Last time an airline told me a similar thing I walked out and picked up a job with Frontier. It was the best choice I made career wise, so I'm thinking this through a lot today. It's not that it's a race, it's that when you start making decisions based on priorities, you generally start a path that governs what your life is. I don't like a job that becomes your life. Thats why I fly in the first place.

Pretty depressing day.

Intense run today. I've been wanting to run the east face of the Wellsvilles for some time, ever since I read in Utah Trailguides that the ascent is inaccessible. Went straight up from the Honeyville gravel pit up the ridgeline south of Coldwater Canyon to Stuart Pass and south up Cone. I packed snowshoes which I only had to use above 8,500 feet. This is one of the most beautiful climbs on any range I've been on. Six mile round trip took almost three hours.

Since I will be sitting on call in Chicago 10 days each month this summer and probably won't work much more than an hour or two every couple days, I've been looking for a project. Flew down to Texas today and picked up an old Chris Craft woody boat to restore. Also gave me the chance to run Texas's Grand Canyon, Palo Verde for three hours on the way back.

I've reserved a KOA campground on a small lake near Chicago for 3 months to park it on. Now I'm ready for summer.

Race: Ogden Marathon (26.22 Miles) 02:47:17
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
1.5026.220.000.0027.72

Supposed to be working this weekend but Friday afternoon I got a call that I'd be off until Tuesday. Great news since I was given an entry last year to Ogden. I dropped the kids off at four am at the neighbor's and barely caught the 5am VIP bus. Pretty cool to talk to Fritz and Bryant on the way up, even though I fell asleep for about the whole ride.

I had no idea how to run this. Been buried at work for 5 weeks and nothing resembling training. With a lot of mountain time I figured I'd be strong but slow. Pretty much how it was. At least I know I've kept a fair fitness base. I ran with Curtis Epply through mile 13. Curtis and I have ran Ogden the last five years and I usually catch him about mile 20. He's been dying for a master's win and today he was much quicker. We came through the halfway at 1:18 and some change. I hit kind of a wall very quick and walked through the mile 14 aid station. I put some serious thought into waiting for the Sub 3 group of twelve who were shooting for a three hour today. But I caught my wind almost immediately and so I backed off to a 6:40 for a few miles. I still had visions of crashing though, I have not ran any long runs at pace. Curtis and I had been trading off and it was good to have someone to talk to for most the race. At 18 he said he was going to put in a few fast downhill miles. I was more than happy surviving where I was at. At 23 I could feel it coming back but just didn't have the time to catch back up to Curtis.

Kind of surprised by surviving this race. I think the hiking and trail time have held a base for me.

It's amazing how sometimes the body can hang onto it's training base with other activities. I had that happen years ago when I worked at UPS and Albertsons. Not much time for training or recovery at the time but still very physically active. Glad you had a good race and some good circuit points.

From Steve on Mon, May 19, 2014 at 08:49:23 from 66.87.126.233

Thanks guys. I think you're right, a marathon is more dependant on a base level of strength fitness than other taces. I really hope to get the chance now to start training again and catch back up with ya'll.

Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?

Alice Cooper: Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee certainly has had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers were coming here as early as the late 1600s to trade with the Native Americans.

Pete: In fact, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?

Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-gue" which is Algonquin for "the good land".

Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that!

I can only do hard runs every 3 or 4 days now.

From Steve on Mon, Jul 07, 2014 at 14:44:44 from 66.87.77.254

These are a different kind of run. I'm not training, just enjoying the time. Slow enough to watch the grass grow.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Jul 07, 2014 at 14:56:09 from 24.10.247.181

Still, a 13 mile walk up 14,000 foot peaks would kill me. But I'm adjusting. I really only need to do one hard day/week to run some decent times as long as I keep my mileage consistent.

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 08, 2014 at 11:21:31 from 199.190.170.31

I know you probably like the Decalibron loop b/c of it's proximity to Denver, but if you ever get a little extra free time, you should head a little further west and tag some of the peaks between Leadville and Buena Vists (Elbert, Massive, Huron, Yale, etc). They're gentle enough that you could run them (less chossy than the Decalibron peaks, too) and I think the views into the Sawatch and Elk Mountains from those summits might even be a step up from the Tenmile range.

Some of that still looks ski-able!

From Steve on Tue, Jul 08, 2014 at 12:11:19 from 66.87.127.23

Decalibron is actually almost two hours out of Denver. Long ways for me while at work. I picked that loop really because it's actually an altitude run without just nonstop climbing. Also I predicted that I could run the 13 miles in close to two hours which made four sunsets a possibility. It's interesting that the FKT for the Decalibron Loop (upper 7.5 miles of this course I ran) is just under two hours! I cut nearly 30 minutes off that. It must not be really contested. Your idea is awesome. I will google earth those today. I want Elbert and Massive on a single run.

From Jake K on Tue, Jul 08, 2014 at 12:40:45 from 199.190.170.31

Denver is so far away from EVERYTHING in Colorado.

They do a race on that loop, although I assume they don't hit the top of Mt Bross since that is private property.

You'd like the Sawatch peaks. Most of them start in the forest for a while and before you break above treeline, which is nice variety.

People run Belford / Oxford in one shot. I've done it on skis. That might be an even more fun duo than Massive/Elbert.

From Steve on Wed, Jul 09, 2014 at 20:31:12 from 66.87.127.242

That is so true. I have never liked Denver and kind of judged Colorado by it. When I started getting into the mountain towns East, it was like a whole new world. Problem is, the traffic to go East is beyond insane.

Nobody took anything serious and some couldn't run at all. On August 22 Walter and I are running Hood to Coast with the Almost Dead Jocks Master team. It's the best team they've ever put together for masters and they are the longest running team in history. I'm stoked to see how it goes.

Too many runs lately at trail pace and needing one without severe uphills so I had my son drive Walter Brown and me up to about the 8,500 level on Mt Logan in the afternoon. We ran to Right Hand Fork and over to Crimson Trail, hooking up with Logan River Trail to come out the canyon, and up to my house. Nice gradual downhill and we averaged 6:07 miles through the first 6. Much faster than anything I have done in a while and it felt good. Super hot coming into the Logan Canyon trails though and we kept stopping briefly to hold our heads in the river. I was happy to see 6:30 average through 17 miles. Downhill but on trail. The last four killed us. Just could not keep up with water trying to run fast. Two of these miles were over 8 min pace.

Maybe just preference. On long, hot runs I can't handle constant sugar. Seems like I can't absorb water as fast if it has sugar. I am really starting to believe in the system of avoiding all calories in what you drink while running. Drink water or diet drinks and take in solid calories.

Coldwater Canyon above my house climbing up to the 8,700 level.

An interesting day to say the least. About a year ago I noticed a dramatic decrease in my ability to train any speed. Actually in my ability to recover from hard training. I pretty much attributed it to overtraining. I just shifted gears into some other things like more trail running and picked up surfing. Really didn't miss the road stuff that much, there was just so much else to do. In March I had a series of blood work done for a new life insurance policy. The tests came back with some issues, markers I guess for bacterial infections in the blood. White count through the roof. So over the last several months when I had a spare hour, I've been back in for more tests. Hate doctors and stuff. Last week I got a call from the specialist that they had a fairly good idea it was Lyme disease. What? Sure enough today results were back and it's a 99.9% So I'm on some kind of antibiotic from hell now, along with a few other things.

I've no idea if this affected my running. But I do know that as serious runners we tend to know our bodies better than the average person. If you know something is off, you better get it checked out. This process of getting rid of this from my system will take a few months. Would have been much quicker a year ago.

Sorry to hear about the Lyme Disease issue. There is a good article about Lyme Disease in the last issue of Runner's World (July issue I think). It goes into some detail about the treatment and prognosis that should get you thinking.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Jul 22, 2014 at 15:31:28 from 24.10.247.181

Andy had Lyme's a couple years ago and they proscribed prednisone which makes you bloated and fat and jacks your appetite through the roof. It took the doctor's here a long time to diagnose it because we don't see it too much because of our lack of ticks.

I'm guessing you got it trail running in a Central American jungle of something like that.

And yet with the lack of speed you still managed to beat me by over 2 minutes on the downhill dash!?!?

From Steve on Tue, Jul 22, 2014 at 15:44:52 from 66.87.127.99

That's one of my prescriptions, great...

I'm skeptical about it actually affecting my running. But it definitely affected fatigue levels.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Jul 22, 2014 at 15:53:16 from 24.10.247.181

"I'm skeptical about it actually affecting my running. But it definitely affected fatigue levels."

I think running performance and fatigue are pretty highly correlated :-)

I've heard anecdotes of people really struggling w/ running for a long time (just feeling "off") and then eventually getting tested for Lyme's and that being the problem.

Prednisone sucks but you gotta get it treated somehow.

From Steve on Tue, Jul 22, 2014 at 17:46:06 from 66.87.127.99

The change I noticed last year was a complete lack of ability to recover from any faster training. 80 could leave me flay for a week. A 50 could change how I felt for a month. But that's what overtraining does too. Nervous system as well as anything physical. I really don't know, there's a lot of speculation by doctors about any of Lyme ' s effects. This is what they call long term stage 3, where they can suspect nervous system issues. When I say I don't know if it affected my running, I mean the racing part. I'm fairly certain it changed my training. That then, would affect racing. It's interesting that I can pick up a prescription in Mexico, an actual vaccination against future problems, which the US will not approve. I could get it this weekend while in Cabo. But in any case it's kind of a good lesson. If something is up with your training don't just ignore it. Take the time to figure out what it is.

From Steve on Tue, Jul 22, 2014 at 17:48:40 from 66.87.127.99

Got to work this morning and my flight was canceled. So I headed down to Provo to attempt running up to Cascade Peak from Provo canyon and the ridgeline all the way to Hobble Creek. From Vivian Park I ran through South Fork and up Bunnell Basin. A complete Bushwack jumping logs and crawling through dense brush. The worst I have ever done. Took nearly 2.5 hours to create Cascade Peak and head to Lightning Peak. On Lightning I noticed some developing storm clouds and sat out a squall for an hour under a ledge. By now I called off the run and turned around. It actually seemed slower going down than up and somehow I ended up taking the wrong canyon down towards Provo Canyon ending up on a huge cliff. So I had to climb back up and by now had a headlamp on. It just got too dangerous by now and I dug a bed and settled in for the night. Very cold and long night, first time stuck on a mountain for a while.

Another one of those sweet long runs on the Des Plains River Trail. I ran into a herd of five deer tonight. Running into the wind, came around a corner and right into them. Could have touched several as they scattered around me.

Deer do not usually travel in herds unlike their Elk cousins. They tend to be more solitary like the moose.

True. They also don't collect in herds just male. I got a picture of five bucks just enjoying their evening meal together.

You need to stop being so wimpy and start running in some of Chicago's more homicidal neighborhoods. Great way to get in a good fartlek.

226 murders so far this year in Chicago.

This city is pretty cool, but it scares me. I have been board paddling on Montrose Beach but last week a guy got shot just 100 yards from me. Last night there was a shooting as I was driving to the airport. The animosity towards you as a runner in some neighborhoods is staggering. I pay attention to everything.

Not kidding, the most dangerous place to run I've ever been.

Race: R2R2R (49.41 Miles) 10:20:37
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
49.410.000.000.0049.41

Not a race, but when one of us on FRB gets a chance to run a R2R2R in the Grand Canyon we usually post it as such since it's a better way to share the experience.  I've always kind of felt I was cheating the Canyon a little by running the R2R2R in early Spring, late Fall, or at night.  Today I ended up with a day off without kids which is unusual so I took the chance to run the canyon.

This run was from the Grand Canyon North Rim campground, North Rim to the South Rim via Bright Angel and back.  Full sun all day but with a great temp/dew point spread which really helped.  In a change from previous years I started the descent down the North Rim slow, just below 10 minute pace.  In the canyon base coming through Cottonwood the temps were already noticably different from previous years.  Forcasts were 78 F at the Noth Rim, 103 F at Phantom Ranch, and 85 at the South Rim.  They didn't dissapoint.  Phantom Ranch was 94 F on the first pass through and 104 F coming back.  I stayed soaked as much as I could but it would pretty much evaporate in 15 minutes.  Up the South Rim via Bright Angel and still going fairly conservative.  I reached the Rim in 5:12 including breaks to refill water four times.  The trip back was hot as I expected and I ran carefully.  My stomach was having difficulty taking in enough water to stay hydrated.  Went through some pretty queasy miles in the heat.  But my pace stayed pretty much the same mostly because I was running so slow to begin with.  Reaching Cottonwood I knew the hardest part was ahead and jumped in the swimming hole in the river.  I will never run across the canyon again without doing this.  Incredible deep pool.  I soaked until I was shivering and my legs were numb.  I knew it was a sure way to get my core temps down quick.  The climb up the North Rim kicked by butt completely.  It always has.  One day I will be in shape to just run up this thing instead of a total suffer fest.  I had a 100 ounce Camelbak and was soaking myself completly every chance I had.  I basically never ran dry on the run back.  Came up the North Rim and ran the last mile to the campground.  The first R2R2R that I have ever ran faster on the way back than the way over.

Insane fun day of running!  Couple of notes on the run today.  There were 4 emergency evacuations today, one helicopter one our of Phantom ranch that happened while I was there.  The hikers up the South Rim were shot.  I could have spent the day helping people try to get up and sharing my water.  I have never witnessed so many people just crashing.  The caution signs all over on the South Rim make a lot more sense now.  I never saw a single runner in the canyon either way, a first in my experience.  In the middle cooridor I only ran into three groups of hikers the entire day.  Last, at the trailhead on the North Rim a ranger came up to me as I was prepping for start and asked about the run.  He gave me a high five and was really excited with a lot of questions.  Talked through the water stops and asked if I needed anything.

Total stats from Garmin GPS:  49.4 miles, 15,330 feet elevation gain, 15, 427 feet elevation lost.  Net elevation during run 30,757 feet.

Jon ' s right. It's gas money. The only way to get trail experience is to get out on them. I don't spend much time on the roads anymore. It bores me to tears. I love the racing though so I'll train on them when I must, but I barely can take a 15 mile road run anymore. I wouldn't run at all if it had to be on a treadmill. I'd be surfing or something real.

This week I saw 14 deer, 3 skunks, 4 new spotted fawns, one elk herd, 4 buck deer grazing together, and I ran right into a group of pure white mountain goats today on top of Ben Lomond Peak.

I guess today up there for a few minutes I "got it".

What a beautiful trail today.  Walter B wanted to get some trail and mountain time in this weekend so I told him to meet me in Ogden and we ran the Skyline Trail up to Ben Lomond peak.  9,700 feet but a gradual long trail.  I didn't want to climb 3,500 feet in three miles after a R2R2R a few days ago.  We passed a lot of bikers today on the trail and saw some mt goats.  We blazed it down hitting one 5:41 mile but mostly around 6-7.  I was wearing Hokas which have to be the biggest POS shoe on the planet.

Yep, I asked last night for a late entry and the director gave me one. I'm not in shape yet for trail racing but I really want to try it out. Saw you ran a 3:24 on that course. Insane. I ran over Ben Lomond last week and that's a tough trail.

From Steve Shepherd on Fri, Aug 15, 2014 at 09:44:15 from 168.180.136.164

Nope I only ran a 3:35 when I ran it 2 years ago, but I'm in much better shape now than I was then and I am hoping to run under that this year. Nathan Peters ran a 3:24 last year. I think you will like the race. It's a very difficult course, particularly the climb from mile 12.5 to 15.5 or so. You wouldn't have run on that section last week if you stayed on the Ben Lomond side of the North Ogden Divide.

Mountain/trail training today with DNR, Forest Service, and Cache Search and Rescue. A last minute exceptional opportunity to run trails and practice speed assist with the special teams in Forest Services. There are an intense upper level of guys that I never knew existed. Today I met the park ranger who holds the FKT on Longs, Grays, and Grand Teton. It was good to shoot a few ideas by about our summit of the Grand tomorrow from Jenny Lake and over to Table Rock.

Everyone likes to find a niche in running where they can give back a little. I'm hoping this will be one of mine. I've joined Cache and Wasatch Search and Rescue trail response team. A new idea of OSSR with all the increase of trail runners.

We ran today on North Fork out of Mantua up to Willard Peak and back down.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance

Today was about pushing the limits and could be the hardest single day run effort I've ever done.  While running the Skyline Trail last week over Ben Lomond Peak I noticed a trail race sign at the North Ogden Divide.  I contacted the race director Friday since the race was already closed and the race was in the morning.  In total opposition from usual trail/ultra races he got me an entry.  I felt it would be a great opportunity to run a single track race on mountains, gaining over 5,000 feet, with some of the best trail racers out there.  I knew Steve S is in awesome shape right now, Nathan P had just won the Wasatch and Jupiter Steeplechases, Pablo G had won this race three times already, a group of ultra guys including Shane M would be there, and the serious local guys.  It would not be the backyard easy run.  Historically my weak points have been heat running and anything with hills, and I have been focusing on those as I slowly crawl back into shape.  But I also knew that we were running a 23 mile attempt late afternoon of the Grand Teton which was honestly on the edge of my ability.  If we hauled butt, it would just all fit in...

Starting line of the marathon I had some decisions to make.  Most runners had serious gear, Camelbacks, fuel, etc.  The race director had sent us an email the night before that the trail was now .4 miles longer and aid stations few and far between.  But when Steve S stepped up to say Hi he only had a hand held water bottle and regular running gear so I made the choice to run with just a 20 ounce bottle of water and a good size bag of gummi bears.  Hopefully I'd hit the aid stations.  I got off quick right behind the lead pack as the race hit the single track straight up the switchbacks up the mountain.  Right away the 6-7 guys were going much faster than I wanted, or probably was capable of.  I just got my head down and dug in since I knew we had 3,000 feet to climb.  I was already exhausted since I'd been up until 2am waiting for my son to get home from a date.  I was cussing him the whole way up.  I hit the small aid station at 9,000 feet and asked the crew how far behind the lead pack I was.  Three minutes behind one group and over six behind the leaders.  In seven miles.  So I knew they were climbing today over a minute faster per mile than I could.  I had averaged just over 10 minute pace coming up.  So I hauled down the hills to the next climb.  Very rocky and narrow and I found that I couldn't go as fast as I wanted.  I was limited by technical ability/trail instead of fitness.  Not what I expected and a good lesson from the day.  The trail forked all over and was marked at those forks by a yellow ribbon on the right trail.  Very difficult to see at six minute pace with your head focused on the trail.  Coming out in Ogden divide and crossing the highway I made a bad mistake.  Looking across the road there were three trails, one had a yellow ribbon on it and a volunteer who I yelled at which trail to take.  She pointed at the one climbing up and I simply started up it.  It shortly turned and began going down and soon I knew that wasn't right because we had a 2,000 foot climb up to the next ridgeline.  I turned around and ran back.  The volunteer was freaking out  she was getting cussed out by the race folks.  Apparently they had stepped away to stock the aid station and left her there.  (Found this out after the race)  It was a sucker punch and as anyone knows who races, going off course can wreck a race for you if you let it. I didn't want that to happen.  I had a hard time getting back in the game.  It was now mile 13 and my next mile climbing up was 17 minutes!  Crap.  Once again I had to get my head down and just focus on turnover.  My next climb miles were 13 and 11, and I was getting stronger.  Pretty cool to experience.  As I crested the saddle I could see a pack of guys ahead climbing Lewis Peak (I believe).  I hit the aid station and started the downhills again.  No more hills to do.  Sweet.  It started coming back and miles 18, 19, 20, 21 were at 5:53 pace.  I felt pretty good.  This was just a different kind of race to run.  I could tell my feet were blistered up and tried to just ignore it.  I passed three guys ahead of my now and dozens of weekend trail runners going down.  Lots of cheering and high fives from local runners who stepped aside for us.  Very cool.  I also began weaving around half marathoners and bikers.  Two miles along the lake and it was over.  I thanked the race director and talked to the guys who kicked my butt for a while about how the &%$# they could run up hills that fast.  I think Steve S would have won the race had he taken that first climb just a notch back.  Then I had to bust out of there for my drive to Jackson Hole.  Long race report today but I want to remember the feeling of this race.  The first 100% effort trail run I have ever done.  Lessons; You cannot gain time back if you are not conditioned enough to run fast uphill.  You simply cannot go fast enough downhill on narrow, rocky, single track.  Also, know the trail.  Read the maps and know where you are going.  Run it beforehand if you can.  Good experience for me and even though I could not keep up with the fastest guys, I was encouraged that I was getting stronger and negative split a mountain, trail  marathon.

My son picked me up and had three cheeseburgers ready.  We drove fast up to Idaho Falls and picked up my brother and a few of his older kids.  We drove to Jenny Lake, Jackson packing and planning along the way.  I knew it was a singular day for an afternoon attempt at the Grand.  High pressure system and clear radar meant a significant chance of missing the afternoon thunderstorms that are the norm in the Tetons.  We were running west across the range from the Wyoming side to the Idaho side.  But looking at the time we changed plans and nixed the climb up the Grand, accepting that we would run across Hurricane Pass 10,700 feet through Cascade Canyon instead.  I didn't want any risk of staying the night along the trail.  The kids dropped us off and we took the ferry across to hit the trailhead.  They drove around to Tablerock Trailhead on the other side of the range to meet us.  Incredible trail.  Impossible to describe.  We stopped as ran eating handfulls of huckleberries the entire run up.  I had some serious rubber legs and was getting very nervous about a 4,000 foot climb and 20 miles.  I was eating the whole way up now, sweeping the Huckleberry bushes and drinking from the glacier waterfalls.  Five miles in I was starving anyways and had to ask my brother to stop running and speed hike for awhile so I could down a few packs of peanut MMs.  Very surprised when it all came back and we ran right up through the 8,9, and 10,000 foot levels.  Super cold above 10,000 feet and my bro was very dizzy now and had tingly, numb hands from the altitude.  The wind was roaring through Hurricane Pass above 30knts and we just had to push it fast through.  We stoped once we hit the sun going down the other side so I could ductape all my toes and the blisters from the morning.  But man we were loving it.  What mountains!  Every now and then going down we would swing by small campsites and say a quick Hi to the campers.  Soon it was headlamp time and I discovered that my headlamp batteries were dead.  How stupid could I be?  Very technical trail down following my bro ahead?  Jello legs as well?  Luckily I had my cell phone, turned the light on and taped it to my hand.  We had to drop pace significantly because I just couldn't see the trail.  Neither of us cared about that by this point.  Five miles from from the trailhead we met my son running up.  What a cool feeling!  The plan had worked and he was having a blast.  He had lost his headlamp coming up and was on an adrenaline high.  Just as it was getting dark he had jumped a pair of bears on the trail a few miles below us and was a bit freaked.  He had ran in the dark after that two more miles up until seeing our lights, sure that they were chasing him down.  Those last five miles were some of the best runnign miles that I can remember, the three of us running down, sharing the light, talking and singing as loud as we could so those bears would stay away.  My brother would stop us every now and then to show us fresh bear tracks in the trail and a few mountain lion tracks.  Bear were all over and I was glad to have a very familiar trail guy along.  We finally reached the trailhead at 10pm and had to hop in for the drive back.  This was an unreal day.

Huge day. Seems like one you'll remember and be talking about for a while. Those Tetons are just amazing on so many levels. Smart call on not chasing the Grand with a late start. The route you did was about as good of a constellation prize as you can get and sharing that with family had to make it extra special.

I'm not at a level for a 100 Jon. Maybe someday but it won't be until I'm trained enough. BTW, your name came up with some trail guys yesterday after the race talking about the downhills. Seems you're legendary on the technical downhill speed.

Jake, the Grand makes me nervous. Too much exposure. I won't complete that summit until everything lines up, and I won't do it free. We have a skeleton rack and light rope. I know my route and so far the risk every time has been too high.

What you accomplished Saturday is mind boggling to me and incredible! I could not believe it when you told me after the race that you were going up to run Grand Teton. There is no way I could have even run another 3 miles on the trails after that race. That sucks big time that you got some bad directions and made a wrong turn. That is such a huge blow mentally that it is impressive that you came back from it so well. I appreciate you saying you think I could have won, but I don't think it mattered what I did there was no way I was going to beat Nathan Peters. I'm sure I could have run a few minutes faster had I not ran up that first climb so fast, but it wouldn't have made a big enough difference to beat Nathan. Great race, great run following a great race, and I'm sure a lot of great memories made!

What did you not like about the Hokas?

Stability was the biggest issue. The side rotation is just too big. It feels like in order to correct the inherent instability the shoe was built with hard plastic sides around and behind the ankle. These plastic sides just tear up the skin around my ankles and on the achilles. When I cut down the sides and back they seem to work great on flat long trails. But I still think they just isolate your feet too much from the trail. I like to feel the trail with my toes.

Pavement running today. 7 miles in the morning in Trenton then off to work. 8 miles easy in the afternoon after work. Six weeks on meds, actually the first prescription meds in my life, and it's over this Friday. So excited to be done with this.

After prepping for weeks to run with Almost Dead Jocks at Hood to Coast, I have to stay in Logan for family reasons. Every time I plan something out months ahead something happens that makes it impossible. I'm going to stick with jumping into things the night before.

Ran 20 miles of the 66 miles of the Raraitan Canal south out of Trenton towards New York.  Great day to run, one of many this summer that just seem to be flowing for me.  Brought back memories of a good TED article a friend sent me a few years ago about "flow".

The best race for me in a year and a half. I couldn't make it to Hood to Coast as planned this weekend buy since I would be in Logan I might as well run the Half. The kids and I got home at 3:30am and I caught an hour nap before heading down to see if I could get an entry. Up at the start I ran a few miles for warmup and was as exhausted as I could ever remember being at the start of a race. But once we got going I relaxed and had a good time. My legs were pretty dead today but if I slowed back to 5:45 they would recover fairly quick so I ended up surging a lot, just being limited by tired legs. But they held up! Pretty stoked about a good run on dead legs today and training is right where I need it to be. Awesome morning talking to Sasha, Fritz, Matt, Steve, Jaren, Mel, and other runners I haven't seen for a while. I always leave these races feeling like I have a months worth of new knowledge to sort through.

The training the last two weeks and especially Sunday cost me about three minutes today, I guess roughly. I'm trying to get my base for an October marathon and in the past I've always cut miles after races. It's just a cycle that keeps me from ever getting ready for a good marathon. Either I stop racing and train or run through it and have slow races. I don't have the opportunity anyway to run the circuit this year. Who knows, maybe I won't get there, but this Fall I'm keeping those miles up no matter what.

The most spectacular mountain running day of my life. At least so far. The perfect un-storm in Colorado created a dry line through the Rockies which looked to last two days. Basically, perfect dry sunshine with pretty much zero chance of any clouds, lightning, or afternoon thundercells.

Starting at 3:30am I ran Mt Sheridan, then Sherman. Drove 30 minutes to Kite Lake Trailhead and summited Democrat, Lincoln, Cameron, and Bross. Got a quick breakfast in Alma and drove 30 minutes to Quandary. Ran the summit trail to Quandary, my new favorite 14er in Colorado. Had lunch in Breckenridge and summited Grays and Torrys, drove 30 minutes to Guanella Pass to try and summit Bierstadt and Evans but ran out of time since I had to catch an 8pm flight home so I could only do one more.

I trail ran eight 14,000 foot peaks and three 13,000 foot in a day. Over 42 miles of pure elevation running, nearly all above 12,500. Climbed just over 17,000 feet doing it. Wish I had more time to wrote about this incredible experience. I ran this day as fast as I could, max effort on the ascents and using the short car time as rests.

I'm ramping up to it. I'm going to run Nolans 14. I just had a friend fail finishing that one. I needed a taste of multiple ascents, and the planning that goes into running the 14ers is time consuming. If another window opens up before October 15th I'll go for it. Anton K only got through seven of those. I'm not incredibly fast but the altitude doesn't seem to affect me like most. My splits are the same above 13,000.

Bucket list 18 mile trail run/clim/rapell up th Grand and Middle Tetons, Jackson Hole WY.  9,300 feet climbed, three rapells, one stupid galcier travers, over 7 hours as hard as I could go.

Short report:  Left Lupine Meadows 6,300 feet elevation at 8am.  Carried a light climbing rack, rope, and no water.  Plenty on the mountains.  Ran past Surprise Lake up Garnet Canyon.  Got to the 11,300 foot Saddle/Base Camp between the Tetons in just over two hours after making the mistake of taking a shortcut across the upper glacier.  Just over 8 miles to this point.  Talked for a few minutes with a climbing guide with Exum Guide Services at the Base Hut with four clients who said that they were not summited Grand because of snow and ice.  I put on warmer gear and headed up the Grand through the South/West climb.  At Upper Saddle, 13,000 met a group of three climbers coming down who had called it off before the technical climb.  I roped in and started up.  Over 2,000 feet of drop on the North side, the most I have ever experienced.  I took the Owens/Spaulding route passing through the Belly Crawl, up the Chimney and through the Chute.  Very slow going with non stop ice.  It began to snow lightly and I was starting to shake from the cold.  I finally got stuck on the last climb, just 120 feet below the summit, on an ice field.  Couldn't find any handholds and after cussing and changing my mind numerous times, called it off.  I was the only climber on Grand today above 13,000 feet.  I climbed back down to the Upper Saddle and decided to rapell off down the South Face rather than the way I came up.  So much freakin fun!  It took three rapell sets to descend the South Face and I dropped right onto the Lower Saddle above Base Camp.  By now I had finally acclimatized to the elevation and felt great.  I took off to the sister mountain, Middle and free climbed via the North Route.  Much easier than Grand and minimal ice.  Sun was shining by now and I headed down through Garnet canyon.  I was drinking from the glacier water all the way down and by now I was really hurting.  None of the Fourteeners in Colorado that I have done had this kind of verticle or the climb.  7,000 feet of climb just up the Grand.  Mostly boulder hopping all day.  I failed the summit on the Grand, barely, so that's one to save for next year.  Summited the Middle though.

My entire body hurts after this.  Probably the most intense full body workout I've ever tried.

Almost nailed it - but you gotta live to climb another day. The Middle is a great consolation prize.

You can drive 80% of the way up most of the 14ers :-) ... the Tetons make you really WORK for it, and you have to know what you are doing - route-finding, climbing skills, etc.

Impressive outing.

I was thinking about doing Capital. Guys say thats the hardest 14er. But the weather looked great in Jackson. I didn't know that the Tetons got snow on the 4th...

Capitol is easier than the Grand, for sure. I did it solo with a bottle of water and a sandwich. But compared to a lot of the walk-up 14ers, it's a lot more fun!

Crestones, Maroon Bells, Pyramid, Wilson Group... those ones will get your heart racing a little more. But still probably not on the Teton level.

Kick in the pants today. Sasha stayed with us last night for the race and I didn't know if I would have the morning off to run. I ran the race with my phone snd just hoped it didn't ring. :-) I ran kind of a heavy week especially the Teton run, but couldn't set a whole week aside for a taper for a race I probably couldn't do. I had to be happy with whatever my legs had left. Turns out it wasn't much.

Lots of fun through mile 7 running with Sasha and Nate. I wasn't feeling the pace at all but seeing the first seven go by at average of 5:35 wasn't good. I dropped back and let the group go. Came through the half exactly 1:18 and it felt like a 2:38 could be in the cards. Then my legs just got worse and worse. Mark passed me looking great and probably three others in the next 10 miles. I just had to hold on. Thought quite a few times about dnfing but I'm not going to experience that again. I could hold on to 7:30 and that's what I did. Hiked the afternoon with the kids in Peter Sinks looking for a long lost cave. We found it which was the highlight of the day.

I'm becoming a great mediocre marathoner.

Easy 8 road miles. I always love this week after a marathon. All the time spent usually running can be used for all my other hobbies.

Been on call this month with Frontier's new Salt Lake routes and so far worked 9 hours in the month. Best September ever. Met with Dr Liddell at Utah State yesterday an expert climber/caver who works with Search and Rescue in Utah. We spent two hours on cave climbing techniques in prep for tonight's expedition into Polygamy Cave. Also Tuesday while running the ridge above Tony Grove I found three cave entrances which I marked on the topo. I rappelled 200 feet into one which may be an undiscovered. To date 67 caves have been mapped in the Dolomite above Tony Grove at about the 8,700 foot line. Amazing area.

Hanging out in Lake City CO for the morning while on call, hoping to get the afternoon off for some rock climbing. Released at 9am though so headed home to make an attempt at London Spire above Willard,Utah. The trail is 50 to 65 degree climb up continuous boulders. Reminded me of the Tetons. Seven waterfalls on the way up. At 7,000 feet the Spire begins and it's a 2,000 foot 5.8 climb. One of the biggest rock faces in Utah and not well known. I made it 3/4 the way up free climbing and ran out of time since I did not want to work my way down in the dark. At one point a mountain goat was climbing directly above me and knocked a rock off that passed within 20 feet. Love this run/climb and looking forward to trying it again with a rack before snow hits. This took 4 hours and very close to 100% effort.

Worked all day.  The solution for Chicago's air traffic control system being broken almost indefinetely by the fireman who doused the whole center with water last week is to direct all aircraft flying through most of the central US, underneath Chicago Center's airspace so they fly in local air traffic control systems.  Now half the US air traffic flies every day in the middle of thunderstorms instead of over them, fuel burn is triple normal amount, and everybody flies where the general aviation aircraft are.  Unimaginable mess.

Today was a trail run up to Jardine Juniper with my son to see how his progression for a R2R November 8th is going.  10 to 12 min pace up and blasted down at 6:27 average.  Very cold at 27 degrees, 9am.  On Friday he surprised me with a 17 mile trail run on his own with a headlamup from West temple Fork to Mt Naomi.  Good run, but even better, a sign that he could have the mental toughness needed for the canyon.  Few trail runners can run alone comfortably.

This past week was a tough one for me.  I've always wanted to run the Chicago Marathon and had an entry since last year for the American Development Program.  I ended up with the kids for the weekend and just didn't feel like leaving them.  We tried for flights Friday and Saturday morning and they were just too full to get them on.  So we changed plans and headed to Moab for a few days.  Much more fun anyways.  This latest experience has convinced me that it's time to take a break from road racing and spend more time with my kids who are interested in the trails and climbing.  Very hard decision since I'm absolutely injury free right now.  But weekends like we just had in Moab with my kids 100% engaged in life are far more important than a run could be.

I'm finding it impossible lately to keep up my entries on FRB, just too much going on.

Four days flying Apple Vacation charters to Punta Cana. Long overnights at a huge beach resort. One of the most difficult or uncomfortable places I've stayed. This is an opulent all inclusive resort with unlimited food. All that people do is eat all day and line the sides of the pool digesting. Kayaks, sailboats, surfboards, and dive gear sits stacked on the beach free to use. The average size of people is at least 250 lbs. This has never bothered me before, but this place is so extreme that it's almost made me physically ill. I've just had to get out on long runs on the beaches to get away.

Race: R2R2R Grand Canyon Double Crossing (48 Miles) 15:20:00
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
48.000.000.000.0048.00

This wasn't a race, but another group trail run across the Grand Canyon.  This time there were eight runners.  Having experience with this run before, we again used a safety runner.  Since we are all from up north we start at the North Rim and head south, then come back, using the Bright Angel trail both directions.  My son Bently was the safety runner.  His job was to run with the group down to Roaring Springs off the North Rim, 5.5 miles, then head back up with any gear that wasn't needed or any runner that wanted to call it off then.  He then chilled out at the North Rim where he had cell reception and each runner was required to check in with him reaching the South Rim.  Depending on condition of the group and the time estimated at that point to make the return trip, he would run down the North Rim again to Roaring Springs and meet each runner as they started up the North Rim climb.  This position takes 22 miles of running with 11,700 feet of climb and a heavy pack so it's a tough job and a busy one.

Me, Bethany Ericksen, Walter Brown, Zac Zimmerman, Bill Hiatt, Rachel Moody, Bently, and Mark Payne ran this one.  At least double that amount dropped out for various reasons before the start which is usually the first slimming that the R2R2R does.  It's tough to make the sacrifices the logistics of this run require.  Pretty great group this year, and strong.  I learned a lot of new things this time.

Weather was the most perfect that I have ever seen at the Canyon.  High pressure system, 30.34", meant a cloudless sky and more consistent temperature swings.  38 degrees at 6:30am at the North Rim start, no snow.  70 degrees at Phantom Ranch.  57 degrees at the South Rim.  16% humidity.  I knew the weather had already solved half my potential problems.  Nearly derailed at the start by an engine light on the RV which could not be solved.  This meant we arrived at the North Rim Kaibab Trailhead at 2am.  Ouch.  Most of the group got sleep on the way down, but we pushed back the start until 6:30am.  I was a bit wound up from the drive and the worries of the next day so I only got two hours of restless sleep.  When we started the run this was my biggest concern by far.  A group run in this canyon could easily turn into a triple crossing, up for 24 hours or more.  We started down the North Rim and the group took it very easy, running 10 minute pace all the way to Roaring Springs.  For the first time that I've seen, everyone ran together so I got a lot of footage of runners going through the canyon together which I never have before.  We passed a lot of hikers and two groups goings one way, R2R, on the way down.  At Roaring Springs Bently picked up coats and gear that anyone didn't want and headed back up to the RV.  Nobody joined him to return.  For some reason the water was turned off at Cottonwood which I took note of for the return.  Running through the Canyon the group traded off lead numerous times and we reached Phantom Ranch as a group.   It was just a fun run, nobody was interested in a fast time and it was a solid group of runners.  Gaps opened up as we began the climb south, runners staying with those who ran the hills at more of their pace.  We began to leave a few runners and I'd head back down along the trail and run with each for a bit as we went along, then go back to the lead group.  At Indian Gardens Bill wasn't sure about the climb up the South Rim.  His calves had been bothering him.  He decided to head back to the North Rim taking it slowly.  Tough decision since he was only 4 or 5 miles from the South Rim.  The rest continued on and split up into groups of two.  Rachel insisted on power hiking the hills instead of running which meant that she would fall behind often.  Zac and Mark were feeling great and shot up the south rim.  I was really feeling the lack of sleep now and was yawning every 5 minutes while climbing and just took it slow.  I eventually caught up to Mark and we were able to keep Zac in sight until just a mile or so below the rim.  At the South Rim I was encouraged to see Rachel had actually caught up to Walter and Bethany by power hiking the climb, and they reached the South Rim together.  Time running at this point was 5:40, total time including breaks and yakking with people in the canyon made this crossing 6:45.

The restaraunt was crazy busy so lunch took an hour and twenty minutes.  We did our phone check ins with Bently on the North Rim and planned his start time down to meet us.  Zac was feeling great and headed back early.  I came alive with a great lunch and all tiredness dissapeared.  Awesome!  I knew I wasn't in the best shape this year but if I took it slow I'd make it.  One of the best parts of the day happened 3/4 mile down the trail from the visitor's center.  two ladies were walking and yelled at Rachel as we ran past, "Pick up your knees!", clearly disturbed by her form.  Yep, two ladies telling a trail runner how to run who has already run 25 miles in the canyon while they have stumbled almost one.

Reaching Indian Gardens again I knew that each runner would be bonking at different times.  This is always a challenge when getting a group across because if you wait for each one, you run out of time.  But there are some tricks.  The most effective is just to slow down through the 30 to 40 mile point so that everyone's digestion keeps up.  A R2R2R is not so much an endurance run as just a long day of eating.  Walter, the most talented runner of us, always has issues eating and running after 8 hours on the trail so we were going to avoid that this year.  If we could.  I bonked just after Phantom Ranch for a while and went back to hike with Rachel until my strength returned.  Rachel said that she was tired enough that running wasn't going to be an option any more.  I was worried because the run doesn't really start until then.  That's just too long to hike.  But we had made excellent time coming down, just over an hour into Indian Gardens, the last stop.  Mark and Zac were now well ahead.  I told Rachel that if she kept up the even pace we would soon catch back up to Walter and Bethany since they would be hitting their rough patch.  Sure enough we came around a bend an hour later and Walter was puking on the side of the trail.  Bethany and Rachel had brought tons of food and shared with us the whole way back.  Just awesome since Phantom Ranch closed early.  Two miles later, Rachel was now bonking and laid on her back at Cottonwood Campgrounds trying to recover.  She was eating great though so it was only a question of time to finish. I made some trekking poles for her so she could take some climb off her legs and we headed up to Roaring Springs.  Bently was there doing his homework and had cold sodas, jackets, and food for everyone.  He told us where each person or our group ahead of us were so I knew where everyone was.  He had given food, water, ibuprofin, or clothing to each one as they had passed him.  It was a tremendous difference to have him at that point.  Anyone who has run  R2R2R knows that Roaring Springs is desolation for you on the return.  You are hurting, tired, and have 5.5 miles and almost 6,000 feet to climb.  It's not uncommon for a R2R2R runner to take four hours from this point.  We started up the North Rim climb and I was surprised by now that Rachel had not slowed at all through the day.  She was going to take this climb at the same pace that she went across the canyon floor.  So we started catching the others in the group that were going faster, and ended the run pretty much together except for Zac, Mark, and Bill who had got back early.  It was the first time that I had ever climbed the North Rim enjoying the experience.  :-)

Total elapsed time for the last runner was 15:20, run time 13:45.  Respectable.

XC skiing is actually harder than running. You should count the mileage.

Day of long call for work meant heading to the mountains. I ran a good portion of the lower trail up K2 west of Denver hitting deep snow about the 12,000 foot level but in blue skies and 50 degrees. Then summited Capitol which took seven pitches with a 150 foot rope. Couldn't even run the ridge without laying rope. Intensely beautiful day.

Got a call to fly to Salt Lake and then was released so I headed up Mt Olympus with Walter. Some hikers coming down told us we wouldn't make it without crampons and ice gear and it was close. Very cool night run.

Wow - that's a huge climb on Capitol. Way to take advantage of the weather window. I thought that was a precarious climb in dry conditions without ropes... but even WITH gear, doing that in winter takes some patience, skill, and persistence. Nice job Steve.
