Thanks! Possibly Ogden, but I have kind of a busy schedule this year so if it happens it would be last minute. It's one of the best marathons out there. Love to see some of you fast guys (and get my butt kicked by you)

Good run. Does 5:45 mean the pace or the time of day?

I see that you are planning the Melbourne Beaches HM for the Master's championship...cool! I was ready to do that one as well but my schedule and family commitments just did not allow for it. Good luck against some tough competiion (I have run with some of those fellas and they are strong and fast!).

From Steve on Tue, Jan 12, 2010 at 16:54:43 from 12.111.245.2

5:45 pace. But it was on a treadmill and I think that's a bit faster isn't it? No wind resistance.

Yeah, I'm nervous about the Masters stuff. Those guys are way faster than I am. I think the Austin Half actually attracts faster Masters than The USATF. Several of them go below 1:08 each year.

This year both are sponsored races for me which is a totally new thing. Have you had any luck with Master's sponsoring? It would be cool to get some more ideas.

Last question, have you ever done the Hood to Coast Relay? I have a team asking me to join.

From Steve on Tue, Jan 12, 2010 at 20:21:52 from 12.111.245.2

I would be happy with 1:15 or so. I don't think I'll run any faster than I practice this year. There's only so fast I can nget going!

From Benny's on Tue, Jan 12, 2010 at 22:57:46 from 24.174.249.108

Austin 3M half marathon.  1:12:38 finish.  The race was delayed one hour for high winds.  What a hard race.  I wasn't really there mentally with a lot going on at home.  Just could not get into the mental focus to run, didn't even want to start, I wanted to just stay in bed!

I had the best time going to the elite dinner and meeting sponsors and the Elite teams from Ethiopia, Kenya and Russia.  The Russian team was very cool, way better trained than I was!  I was totally out of my league at this race..

Good course, but I never felt the supposed downhills!  I still can't figure out how to take any food in on a half marathon.  I only had two drinks of gatorade during the race and I guess it got me through.  The course turned a lot and each time we headed into the wind I tried to hang behind someone else but everybody else had the same idea I think because we kept running into each other.  It was a hard race for me mentally, I pretty much gave up a few times but held on to the end.  Now I have to decide if I feel like running Melbourne in a week!

Awesome time, especially with the wind and the issues they had with the race. To be that unmotivated and throw down a 1:12 is amazing. Great job.

From Jon on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 22:56:36 from 75.169.137.238

1:12 is a great time, especially since you didn't feel great.

By the way, you should go into the calendar and check the box that this is a Race Report. Then it will be flagged for everyone to see, and you can put your time/place.

I know that feeling of wanting to stay in bed. I struggle with that every morning. Way to tough it out on a tough race and finish in 1:12. Next week you should do a run that is just for fun. That should help you get your motivation back.

From Steve on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 12:48:06 from 75.146.90.170

I don't think I'm going to run it this year. I have a lot going on this weekend and honestly I don't feel I'm in shape to run with those guys yet. I feel like I need to do a few fun races and back off my schedule for a bit until it's all just fun again. You ever get that way?

From jtshad on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 12:51:37 from 204.134.132.225

I thought about running the race this year but couldn't get it all worked out. I have played with idea of the Space Coast Marathon the past 2 years but again couldn't get schedules/travel to work. I am again considering that race this November.

We love Florida for vacations...we went 3 times in the last 2 years and are likely heading down there again in April for a friend's wedding (in Melbourne area).

I just got invited to run this two weeks ago by the race director and felt a marathon would be a good break.  I have been training for half marathons wchich included occasional semi long runs but mostly fast Tempo runs so I was kind of curious anyway how this training would work for a marathon.

I was lucky enough to get an overnight with work in Phoenix so it kind of worked out.  It was such a pretty night I left the hotel Saturday night with a sleeping bag from the manager.  I camped out on the ground and slept like a baby until 5am.  The morning was awesome!  What a cool place to start a race.  The scenery was incredible, up at the base of the mountains in Apache Junction.  Lots of warming fires and a lot of fun.  Only 600 runners in the marathon. They seemed very serious and fit, but having a good time.

I had heard it was a hard course.  The masters record was only 2:47.  It started out downhill, kind of..with rolling hills on a dirt road for the first 8 miles or so.  I had no idea how to pace since I had no real long run experience yet this year but there were 4 of us doing about 6 minute pace and it felt all right so I stuck with it.  The hills started about mile 10 so I knew the pain would be starting soon.  I came through the13 mile point right at 1:18 so still sticking to 6 minute pace.  I felt a bit intimidated at this pace since I knew I had 13 still to go so I backed off a bit to around a 6:13 pace.  The scenery was so cool honestly I lost track of the miles a few times, after all I'm used to running in the snow right now.  After mile 20 the hills begun again and i think I lost about another 10 seconds a mile from there to the finish.  I was real happy with the time and how good I felt the whole race.  I did beat the masters course record by 4 minutes and then bumped into the guy in front of me in the corral and he was a masters runner from Boulder that kept that 6 minute pace we started with almost to mile 22!  I'd have never caught him, even if I'd have known he was a master.  It really turned out to be a masters race with 6 of the top ten guys being over 40!  Not particularly fast but well worth it.

All in all a fun run.  I took out of this one that I believe the fast Tempo runs medium distance at 30 sec per mile faster than marathon pace can really help.  For the first time in a marathon for me the pace felt slow, it's just the distance that sucked..

How awesome!! I like it a lot, it is not very often that you have so many good masters runners to run with!

The pace you have been training at really seemed to have set you up well for a good marathon. It will be interesting to see how Ogden goes after some specific marathon long runs, you certainly are fit!

From Steve on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 23:10:10 from 12.28.97.2

Yep, the times were off. When I was stumbling around at the finish line after the race, the guys ahead of me were arguing with the timers because the clock showed two minutes slow. My GPS was about exactly that also, so I know they were off.

I don't know if they got it fixed at that time or not. I didn't really care because I was just happy to have run a marathon! Honestly it was fun. i think the half marathons are harder because you have to run so dang fast.

Great job Steve. I saw your name in the race results, and I thought, "Who is this guy from Logan?" Certainly the guys up north must know who he is. And even though I've commented on your blog before, I didn't make the connection. I also saw Mark's name and didn't realize that he was the famous MarkP from the blog. My neighbor Bruce RUN2DAY (Washko) ran the race. He's 54 and capable of sub 3's, but he was using this as a training run and got dehydrated.

Hey Steve, got your message. Congrats on the 2:42 on no marathon training.I'm actually ahead of where I was last year at this time, but it looks like you've improved even more. I plan to do the SLTC 15k a week from this Saturday, then the Leopards 5k. I'll either do the Salt Lake Half or the Striders Half and then the Ogden Marathon where, of course, I finished second to you last year. You are looking hard to beat, but I'm putting a lot of thought into my training and maybe I can be within shouting distance of you once or twice!

Hey Steve. Based on your last entry and some others I've read, I have to recommend that you read George Sheehan's "Running and Being". It's my favorite book ever written on running. But I think you have to be the sort of runner that does things that appear - to non runners at least - a little odd. I think it's out of print, so you may have to find a used copy. I read it over and over again and it makes me feel good about my insanity.

From Steve on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 16:41:37 from 68.28.83.123

I know. It's a challenge to be safe with this hobby sometimes. I had a favorite course out of the hotel in Chicago I always ran that took me over to the south end of the lake until one day a car pulls over and an undercover police officer asks me what the heck I was doing. He just shook his head and said that even the cops drove unmarked cars through there.

Rob, I'm going to check out that book. Thanks for the idea. I'm always on the look for something to read.

Fun race!  I had decided to just take it easy today and have a good time with the run since it was a hilly run and I had no time to see the course.  I'm not a very good hill runner, just have not trained for them so I have no confidence when it comes to these kind of races.  I started out slow and after a mile or two I decided I better pick up the pace.  Walter and Ben were way out front.  It looked like they were half a mile ahead but it felt so good to just be tooling along and enjoying it.  When the downhill stretch came along at around two miles picked it up enough to catch up at least to Walter.  Then Bastard Hill came along, on the 10K it just kicked my butt, today it didn't seem that bad.  Maybe some of these runs have been paying off or maybe it's just not running the course after a marathon.  I thought someone would pass me for sure on the hills so I let it go each time I went down to at least keep some kind of a good pace up.  I wanted to run an average of 5:45 on this course but just settled for a 6:00 pace and just enjoyed the run.

Great race Steve. I almost went up this morning to test myself on that tough course.Opted for a workout instead. I'm really looking forward to the Salt Lake Half and hope to see you there. I don't think I'll be at Ogden - state track meet that day. I'm looking at the Minneapolis Marathon the first week in June instead.

Nice job, Steve, with the 2nd place finish. That's a fun, yet tough course. 5:45 would be very difficult, too.

From Steve on Sat, Mar 13, 2010 at 16:01:55 from 68.28.51.113

Thanks guys. Whoever put that course together was insane. Rob, we'll miss you at Ogden this year is going to be a competitive one for masters. I know some guys are comming down from Boulder, CO to run it. Is the Minneapolis the USATF Championship again? Paul, love to carpool with ya. Let's hookup. Maybe I can slip something in your drink on the way down to slow you a bit..

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Mar 13, 2010 at 16:22:33 from 98.202.182.29

I think you're confusing the Minneapolis Marathon in June with the much older and more famous Twin Cities Marathon in October. Minneapolis is just a second year race. Out and back course along the Mississippi River south to Fort Snelling State Park and back.A 41 year-old won it last year in 2:42. So who knows, could be fun. There is a half as well - maybe you'll be in MSP that wekend?

Nice run. I didn't think it was possible to take it easy on this route. Not running a marathon the week before made it easier to go up all the hills.

From Jon on Sat, Mar 13, 2010 at 17:15:54 from 75.169.152.81

Steve- don't put something in Paul's drink to slow him down. Put something in his drink to knock him out for 4 hours!

Those courses are great. They sure are a "training series". You won't set any PR's, but they certainly toughen you up for the summer.

You blasted on the down parts! Everytime I got to striking distance you gained another 200 yards! The next two races are a lot better!

First 11 miles just under a 7 min pace, then didn't find any water so I had to drop of 20 seconds a mile just to get it done.  That left a mark..

Started out on a Tempo run in Las Vegas this afternoon.  The traffic was crazy and I was being pretty careful.  At about 8 miles I got hit by truck.  It was a guy talking on his cell phone that pulled up to the sidewalk and slowed. As I passed around the front he suddenly gunned it to jump out into traffic between the cars.  I barely saw it out of the corner of my eye and was able to jump up enough so he hit me hard on the hip and I rolled over the top and behind the truck.  I lay there on the road and couldn't believe how lucky I was.  The driver was bawling but still wouldn't get out of his truck and some lady in another car was screaming at 911 on her cell phone.  But when I picked myself up aside from road rash all over I felt fine so I took off running again since I had a flight to do back to Denver in two hours.  When I walked in the lobby of the hotel the concierge just freaked out with all the blood and talked me into going to the hospital so I got removed from my trip a day early and spent the evening in a Vegas hospital.  Still can't believe how lucky I was!  Everyone be careful out there with cell phones, texting and busy people!

Leopards 5K in Salt Lake.  I barely made it up to the starting line in time because I was trying to get a warm up in this morning.  But a very fun course!  I took about 4 Motrins before the race hoping to deaden out the accident from Thursday and thankfully didn't even feel it!  Since some of the race was downhill I ran in my "Fat Man" shoes, Assics Gel Kayanos.  First time I ran a 5K in shoes that heavy but I didn't want to hit downhills today in flats.  The first mile went pretty fast, I was stuck in a large group of people I was trying to get around though.  I knew I had to try and catch Rob who I knew would be running somewhere around a 5 minute pace, but I never saw him.  I tried to catch the 4 guys ahead but they took off on the last mile and left me.

Beautiful run out in Nibley.  I had to do a tempo run tonight but still worried about the hit on my hip and running a downhill race Saturday.  Also I can't figure out how to marathon train through this week with a half marathon Saturday and the next as well.  I have to do a long run in the morning and don't think I can recover by Sat!

Great church meetings today in a new ward and I'm going to love it.  The girls and I had a great weekend.  I started out my run tonight and ran for a mile with a road biker who slowed down enough to talk to me for a mile or so.  He made me laugh when he said I had the funniest stride he'd ever seen because that's what my high school track coach had told me.  It reminded me of the afternoon at the Nationals when my coach said he didn't think I had a lick of talent, I was just missing the part of my brain that registered pain..

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 14:03:13 from 205.127.70.66

Steve, I too worry about racing too much. It definitely does interfere with your training. Although I think half marathons are a definite benefit in marathon prep. Just do a mile warm up and three or four miles after and you have yourself a long run. But they definitely take time to recover from.

Nice! 10 miles in 1:02.

From Steve on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 16:00:39 from 68.28.51.119

Problem is I want to use two training concepts this year more. One is the long fast run which is consistant runs over 10 miles at close to half marathon pace. I guess a few half marathons would count for that. The other is long runs over marathon distance. That's hard to work in with half training because they wear you down!

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 16:18:28 from 205.127.70.66

Those are both good ideas. When you are preparing to race distances of different lengths you have to think in terms of workouts that will give you more bang for your buck. Here's a workout I do that you might want to try.

65 minutes on a treadmill

2 minutes at 7.5 mph

2 minutes at 8.5 mph

2 minutes at 9.5 mph

4 minutes at 10.5 mph

2 minutes at 7.5 mph

2 minutes at 8.5 mph

and so on...

each cycle from 7 to 10 lasts 10 minutes. Repeat 6 times. Cool down for 5 minutes. Great run. It requires real mental focus and is great for everything from the 5k to the marathon. If you do it, I'd love to know how it goes.

Flew into SLC about 10:30 pm Friday and decided I was too tired to drive up to Logan and back down so I just drove up and slept a few hours at the start.  That was fun..

It was so cold at the start that I could't believe everyone had showed up.  Windy as heck with snow blowing everywhere.  It looked like January.  On the bus ride up the driver had a hard time once or twice keeping the bus on the road with the wind and kept telling us how nuts this was.  At the top the roads were so slushy that there was no way I wanted to warm up, my shoes were already getting soaked.  So I just tried to stay a bit warm until we could get running.  The start seemed a bit slow and I settled in behind Ben and Teren running about a 5:25 pace.  I felt pretty comfortable aiming for a 5:30 pace for the half and knew the first 5 miles were downhill.  We ran the first 5K in 16:32 and hit the 10K at 33:12 so right on pace and it felt good.  The wind wasn't so bad, just the usual up the canyon.  When we came to about 7.5 miles the wind hit hard.  Teren had by now worked up to a 200 yard lead and it took some work to reel him in.  Ben and I started working together to cut the wind and ran the next 3-4 miles trading off lead.  Each time I was in the lead it felt like I was partway bent over just to go forward with the wind and even though we were blocking for each other we lost about a minute a mile.  Ben said so much for a PR day and I just laughed.  Teren was long gone.  At 10 miles or so I hit a water stop and just about lost Ben and had to work hard to catch back up.  From then on I drafted more than helped!  It felt pretty good from then on.  Until Ken flew by us at 12.5 miles and I had to settle for fourth.  Man he had a kick today!  It was a really fun race, even though my time was way off what I've been training for.  I couldn't stop grinning after.   I was actually excited to feel so good after the race.  I've been sore all week and felt this was way too much running lately so it was a relief to feel like the legs were fresh.  I've had to run slow all week with training

If I do it will be last moment and just for fun. but 50 bucks is a lot for a 5K since I am not pre-registered. let me know if you make it (send private message) and I may come do it just to watch you win the masters race. I am pretty sure you will win if you do it-hope you can make it. if you cant run and are preregistered i could pick up your packet for you. and then run as you and make you look really bad with my slow time.

Scott, sounds like a great time but probably crazy at spring break. I just got back from Powell and it was nuts. I dropped a lot of my run schedule and swapped it for junk food too!

I won't be running Carlsbad. I just can't fit it in this year. It sure would have been fun. I have run with those guys before and had a great time! No way I could win this year. Pete Mcgill and Christian Cushing Murry will probably do sub 15s. Also Dennis Simonatis is having a stellar year so far and I hope he shows up there. I barely jog compared to those guys.

I have never run 28 miles in my life. great job!

if you need a shuttle to the starting line saturday let me know. I will be down there with a friend from SLC, we will park one car at the bottom and one at the top and will be happy to give you a ride up.

also, when you finish your race, if you need a cooldown come back up the course and pace me in!

Steve, it is point to point, starting up by the U of U and ending by the gateway mall. Runners can take the trax up in the morning, there are no buses. My friend and I will spot a car at the end, then drive one to the race start to save time over trax. I will let you know where we will be at what time to catch a ride with us. Would help to get your cell phone number. See you saturday.

Salt Lake half marathon yesterday.  It's been a busy week and still looking forward to Ogden marathon in four weeks so I didn't know how to pace this run.  I was worried about the effects of a long run I did on Monday but I'm way under my goal mileage needed for marathon training so I had to just see how it goes.  My uncle is Lieutenant Ewell, who is the police officer who runs the command center that organizes all the police coverage for these races (also the USATF Masters Chair).  He had got me a comp entry to the race and told the race director I'd run it as fast as the other masters so I had to hit it fairly hard.

I met up with Scott and friends for a ride up to the start.  Thanks guys!  Then attempted to find a porta potty in 15 minutes along with some 20,000 other people.  That didn't work so I had to hydrate a tree on the University campus and run to the start as fast as I could.  When I got to the start it was amazing.  There was no way to get any where near the start and so I jumped the rail tracks to climb the fence over and got yelled at by the police.  Finally I had to settle with pushing my way through a thousand runners to find the start.  I spoke with Rob and Nathan at the start for a few minutes which was great.

The race seemed to start downhill slightly for the first few miles and just clipped by.  I hung on Nathan H. and Danny for about 5 miles with Albert Wint.  They all run with strides that look like an easy jog and there I am clomping along.  My GPS started and then stopped so I had to start it again, but Albert tracked our miles.  5:04 mile 1, 5:08 mile 2, 5:07 mile 3.  Albert and I were talking about the Ogden half last week and he looked at the splits and says crap, we gotta slow down and so we tried.  I think I added about 5-6 seconds a mile from that point but I knew I had to take advantage of the downhill and pay the price later on the climbs.  I got passed by a runner in one of those triathlon outfits that I can't believe a man can bring himself to go out the door in.  He kept going at the marathon turn so I've been wondering how he did and who he was since he was running at a 5:06 pace or so.

The race was a ton of work at the end.  I took a wrong turn by going straight at Liberty park instead of turning in it, thankfully an officer yelled at me and I turned back around.  There just wasn't anyone around until outside of Libery park and then you had to weave in and out of walkers the whole way in.  I had my pace figured at about 15 seconds a mile fast at mile 9 so I felt I could slow it up that much for the last 4 and be on goal.  I think Albert and Rob were catching up to me through theses miles.

I had some bad blisters from this one.  My feet were so hot when I took my shoes off it amazed me.  I'm sure the blisters were just from the heat.  The bottoms of my feet felt like they were burned.  This is the second race in these Nike Lunar racers and although I like how they feel I can't use them if they keep doing this to me!

Steve, I did the same thing with the trees- no way we would have made it with those porta a potty lines. And then I got yelled at by the police too for crossing the trax lines with a train coming about a half mile away. give me a break.. The starting line was a disaster. Interesting your feet felt hot- I had the same problem, must be that downhill, and got the blisters too. I wasn't running anywhere near as fast as you though. great job 3rd overall and first over forty, awesome job!!

Last race of the Strider circuit.  I had a hard week of training and needed a fast long run so this fit right in to Ogden training.  My feet were still torn up pretty bad from the Salt Lake half marathon Saturday with those Lunar Racers so I had to run in my "fat man" shoes with a zillion bandaids on my feet.  Ben took right off at the start and I figured he was doing around 5:35 pace which was way faster than I felt like going today! He has a good chance of winning Ogden marathon in three weeks I think.  We both missed Walter today.  He would have pushed both of us.

I wanted around a 6 min pace for the run but was doing around 5:47 pace up to 9 miles, then the leg fatigue really hit which was perfect for training because that's what I wanted for a long fast run, but bad for a race!  I had absolutely no leg strength left after the last few weeks and just coasted the rest of the way.  Beautiful morning for a race.  I still had to run 5 miles after the race to get my mileage in and that was no fun!  It was fun to sit in the sun and talk to Matt and the other runners for an hour or son until the circuit results were done.

This was the hardest circuit I have done, lots of hills and freakin cold.  I took second place overall for the circuit.

I was not looking forward to this run.  Today was a "fuel" run.  A long training run with no food.  I am hoping to learn a bit more about how I feel at the Bonk stage and how to deal with it.  I skipped breakfast and headed out the hotel towards the beach. It was hard to start a long run starving and knowing that all I could get was water.  By mile 10 I could feel the effects.  I ran from Balboa beach up to Newport and a bit farther north.

I felt exhausted from about mile 13 on but I knew it was more from the need for energy than being tired so I hung on to it and it actually got easier by mile 18.  Kind of a cool training run and one I'm going to have to try again.  Average 7:03 pace

I needed a "loosen up" run in the dreaded taper time before Ogden so I ran the Health days for the first time since High School.  It was a lot bigger than I remembered it.  This year there was over 600 runners the director said, confirming my belief that running is really in a massive resurgence this year all over the country.

I wanted to hold about 5:30s today so I started up the canyon about that pace and soon it kicked my butt.  I thought the canyon would never end.  I was keeping contact with two runners going up the canyon together and got passed by another right before the turn around.  The two guys were obviously fit runners and started to pull away pretty good a few miles up as I slowed to probably 6:30 to 7 min pace up the hills.  Going down was sweet so I decided to catch the lead pack and had to run 2 miles right on 5 min pace to close back in.  I passed the two leaders with about 3/4 a mile to go and one of them, Carson it turn out, fell right in at the pace.  He was just out for a nice morning jog..

Fun race, and a fast finish (with a slow time).  The best part was talking with the other guys at the finish and meeting some fellow Bloggers.

conquer the canyon- I like that! I agree the best part is hanging with the local runners. great group here in Cache Valley.

Trevor Ball is a former USU track runner, extremely fast, and usually destroys the field in any race he runs as he is very competitive. great job reeling him in and passing him at the end!

Good race.

Trevor has a 10K PR right around 29:00. One of the best runners to come out of Utah State.

I'm not sure how to feel about this race.   I ended up about 5 minutes slower than a goal pace I've been chasing but on the other hand I cut over ten minutes off my time last year.

Great start to the race, riding up with Keith Anderson and hearing his war stories.  I met a lot of friends at the start which was pretty cool.  I still can't decide if all that smoke inhalation around the bonfires is good for you before a race.

The race started out pretty normal.  It was nice running with Ben (thanks for the draft again!) and Jeff.  The downhill start felt pretty good and I knew I was comfortable with a 5:45 pace.  I really had no strategy as I have not tried running a marathon this close to threshold before.  I knew that my threshold this year was about 5:35, any faster than that and things catch up pretty fast.  The pace felt fine for the first 6 miles somewhere around 5:35.  Since it was downhill and I knew the race leveled out in the valley I decided to stick with it and shoot for a 1:15 half.  We dropped off two runners through the half point and I crossed the half at 1:14:35 but was feeling it.  My wind was great but the legs were pretty dead, maybe not enough taper this week.  By mile 16 I was dead and started losing 20 seconds a mile but still held visual contact with Ben.  I lost him and the other runners completely around 18 miles and hit it pretty hard at 20.  It was all I could do to not stop and walk through an aid station.   I knew it was one of the worst paced marathons I've ran.  But you never know how to pace a race with a lot of downhill sections.  I just focused on keeping 6 minute miles from there on.  I was as tired as I've ever been from a marathon, but strangly enough had no soreness at all.  I was able to go on a run with my family tonight and that never happens!  Makes no sense.

I learned a lot from this race so from that standpoint it was one of the most valuable.  It gave me a lot to think about for a couple of weeks.

Really nice talking to everyone after the race!  Jeff, you're awesome and hope to run with you again!  There is such a fun group of guys running this year!  Also a great race by the Clydsdale (207lbs) just over 3 hours from Smithfield and his son ran a 2:19 half marathon at 13 years old.

This Marathon is very hard on me. I even had a hard time finishing the last 3 miles with only 10 miles behind me and it was difficult. Its really hard to get your pace going with the woopdie doos and sharp turns and running into half marathoners. You did great!

Steve, awesome time and great job on the Master's win! It was great talking with you and I hope to run with you again soon. You guys took off and I knew that pace would kill me so I just eased back. You had 3 minutes on me by the half so you were smokin'! It sounds like the second half hurt everyone up front a bit, I'm glad it was not just me! Keep running strong.

Fritz, I just run so much slower than you that 12 miles doesn't do anything!

Walter, I had slowed to a 6 pace at 20 so the tunnels were kind of fun. But man there were a lot of half marathoners to dodge this year!

Burt, I was a blogger at that time for about a month. I was just excited to read race reports from some serious runners like you guys. I've learned a lot from this blog.

Rob, we missed ya, nuff said..I don't think Grandmas is a course to bounce back on though, is it?

Scott, I rode up with Keith and he said he had a pulled calf muscle to start a marathon on thanks to trying to outsprint the fast Prof. and getting his butt kicked.

I ran the first mile just above a 5 min pace and then it hurt so bad I didn't pay attention to it again!  I think the average was just about a 5:20 but it felt like a 7 min pace.  Fun course and cool to do something shorter!

5 easy miles in Denver followed by some weight training.  This has been a hard week.  I have work until Friday night with no way of getting out of it and a marathon on Saturday morning in Duluth.  I have spent the week trying to decide if I can even run the marathon since I just can't seem to get the kick back into my legs.  Probably too much mileage after Ogden last month, I don't know.  This week has been simply recovery runs and 12 hour days at work.  I don't seem to have it physically and mentally together for this marathon.

Good luck whatever you decide Steve. Marathons are definitely easier if you are 100% physically ready and mentally committed. I'm wrapping up my vacation today - I think I've gained 5 pounds of flab this week with vacation eating coupled with the post marathon recovery week.

Crash and burn..First experience with not being able to finish a race, so a pretty disappointing day.

I was on call for work Friday in Denver so I wasn't sure I would make it to the race. But as luck would have it I got released early and hopped on a jumpseat to Duluth. I got there about 10pm and since I had chosen a host family over the hotel, I met up with them and we toured the city until midnight. I never get more than 4 or 5 hours sleep night before anyways. They were a great family and it was a highlight of the trip.

In the morning I was picked up by the van and spent the ride up talking to the Japanese team, very cool.

I was a bit apprehensive about running today because of a sore tendon and lingering leg fatigue but everything kind of fell together for it so I went for it. The pace felt great and I fell into a perfect group running a 5:45 pace which was exactly my goal. But around mile 8 I already could feel that Achilles tendon and calf tightening up. I hung with the group through mile 11 and had to stop and try to stretch it out. I started again but coming through the half it became obvious it could be serious. I sat at a medical tent for two minutes watching runners go by and decided to just finish the race so I started again. I only hit mile 16 until I knew it was a day. Crap.

What a downer. Dropping out of a race is the exact opposite feeling of finishing one well..

The EMT at the elite tent took some time with my ankle and insists it's a partial tendon tear, but I think I dropped out early enough that damage is minimal. The next few days will tell.

Huge bummer, sorry to hear about the injury and DNF. Hope its nothing major and the recovery is quick.

Looks like you've had a pretty full year of races already with awesome performances...sounds like your body might be looking for a bit more rest between the really hard efforts. (I could be way off there, just an observation from an onlooker)

Welcome back Steve.I've been in the same boat. Really sore left achilles. No running, only cross training.

From Steve on Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 13:36:01 from 72.165.228.4

It's no fun, it's my left as well and it's like a golfball sized bump now on the tendon. I think it's just some separation so I'll be swimming for a while. You better go run Murray days on the 4th, some money and circuit points.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Jun 30, 2010 at 16:05:03 from 76.27.120.29

I won't be doing Murray (first time in 8 years I've missed it). It's just not worth it for a little 5k even if it is a circuit race. I've decided to de-emphasize the circuit anyway. I think racing every couple weeks can be detrimental to your long term development and also cause you to make poor training decisions.

I'm gonna stay off the achilles until I can run pain free. I've read too much about how it can take MONTHS to heal if you do anything stupid.

I'd like to know your thinking on the subject.

From Steve on Thu, Jul 01, 2010 at 15:19:40 from 75.165.235.39

I think you are right about the circuits. It really messes up my training for the important races.

Seems there are two opinions about the achilles tendon thing. One is to stay off it until it better. That of course works. The other is what I used last year and that is consistent long slow running with stretching and area massage. Of course it was not as bad as this time. Right now I have a lot of swelling. But I did have total recovery.

I had a Salt Lake overnight for work this weekend so I got up and decided to try a 5K.  Enough time with that stupid tendon!  I was kind of curious how swimming affected my running for the last four weeks.

There was a fast field that showed up so I was excited to get a good run in.  Everyone started out pretty fast with around a 5:10 pace and I was shooting for about 5:30 so it took a while to catch the group.  It felt great and the pace was right on for me, a guy I didn't recognize passed me at 2.5 miles and felt good enough to hang on until about the 3 mile point to kick it in a bit and pass him back.  That felt a bit like racing again!  Best news is that I have the tendon strength, I believe, so it's time to start training again!

Not too shabby Steve. I'm curious to know how much pain you are experiencing in the achilles? Interesting you should mention Des News next week. I went to Liberty Park today to run. Did 6 miles with a fair amound of pain, but around 3 miles I just sort of forgot about it and noticed it wasn't getting any worse. So I've decided to give the 10k a shot.

Not sure of the race time or place. I have not seen results posted for this one. Still attempting to run with this tendon problem, but facing the obvious-you end up racing like you train so if you can't train you are slow! I couldn't miss this one though. It is such a fun course. The first mile went by pretty fast at 4:43 and the next mark I looked at was the 5k at 15:07 so it was a fast course. I felt great but kept getting sharp pains shooting up my calf from the tendon so I walked it for half a mile or so. It felt like it was doable around mile 4 and come on, it's downhill! So I gave it a shot again and caught back up to Rob. That was fun but I kept getting visions of something bad happening so I walked it some more. I think my time was about 34:40 I'll have to check it out when results are posted. This is the third messed up race in a row, so it's time off for a bit.

I've been swimming a lot due to a partially torn achilles tendon so I was excited to finally go run again.  The last three races have been total disasters with walks in two of them so I did not know what to expect.  I have been training long slow runs for two weeks mixed in with the swimming, iron supplements and plain time off and have recovered pretty fast.

I ran a three mile warmup to feel things out a bit and felt almost normal for the first time in two months.  I decided to start out slow and see how it felt.  The cannon start sent the entire front line two feet in the air which was pretty funny and I almost forget to start running.  I settled into a comfortable pace and after a bit noticed Rob and Neil ahead so I ran with them for a little while.  The pace was pretty relaxed so I tried relaxing the legs a little and opened my stride.  My Garmin said 5:15 for the first mile.  It was cool to just run without the constant pain and I just enjoyed the race until the 2 mile marker when I noticed my Garmin said 1.8 miles so I shut it off since it's been doing that lately.  Turns out Demetrio, who was driving out front took one turn early to help with the next aid station and the police pace car followed him so the course was cut a bit.  I was real happy to run for the first time at pace in two months without the leg pain.  I'm pretty sure I've been low on iron as well since my legs have gained back so much since paying attenetion to the diet.  Twinkies and gas station hotdogs must eventually take a toll on your body..

I had to rush to the airport for a flight and missed the awards and talking to the guys.  Ran 6 miles in the evening out of Denver airport in between flights, so much nicer than sitting in the plane waiting for people!  Now to start training for the Hood to Coast in two weeks and Top of Utah!

This blog got deleted somehow so I'm entering it again.  I was pretty bummed this weekend to not be running the TOU half and had a great entry for the Hood to Coast relay but had to withdraw for family reasons.  So it was a hard weekend.

I had to fly a family member into Baylor Medical Center in Dallas and had the morning off so I looked up the race schedule and hit this 5K.  I just had time to run down to the park and run back, 6.5 mile round trip.  I think the warmup really helped as it was my fastest 5 K this summer.  Fun race!

After the game I headed out for a long run. I am trying to decide if I want to try the TOU marathon since I have an entry from the director, but it's been a battle just to get in the miles the past few months. It's going to be a last minute decision if it happens.

OKC is not a runner friendly city so it was a long hard run, but I did it! Right about 8 minute pace, so pretty slow.

Just did my long run this weekend so I was hurting! I've been excited to just get the distance in lately. My pace has been so slow I knew I had to mix in a race or two to keep from getting the "marathon shuffle".

I showed up at the race pretty late since it was so early..It was 38 degrees this morning! Nuts! I made it up to the starting line just moments before the race started and had time to talk to my neighbors and their kids running the race.

I wanted to pace at 5:45 for the 6 miles and started out a bit fast which is usual for me. I saw Scott and said Hi for a minute and then just enjoyed the first downhill bit. It was hard to run a pace when I have been just jogging lately but at least the tendon wasn't bothering me. I fell in behind the first two guys and pretty much finished on the pace I wanted. Great workout!

This is the absolute funnest race of the season, so I knew I couldn't miss it inspite of a tendon issue, anyways how can you get injured running downhill anyways?

There was a lot of fun people at the start so the race was turning into a good time even before it started.  There was a pretty good wind comming up the canyon we would have to run into so I was pretty sure times would be a bit off from last year.  Also the starting line seemed to have been moved up the canyon higher.  I had on my "Fat Man" shoes, 15 ounce Kayanos since this is so steep of a course.  No way my calfs can handle any kind of flats this year in any race, let alone this one.  We started off on a pretty good downhill and I was just looking for someone to use as a windblock for a mile or two but Moody is running so well this year he was just too fast.  Also I knew Rob Murphy was going to be passing me soon since he beat me good at the Deseret News 10K so I had to get going.  Nothing is like this race, you really just have to do all you can to slow down as you run.  I felt like my arms were windmills on the sides of my body and my form was ridiculous.

The first mile was 4:31 and the second was about the same.  I could not close the gap on Teren and Patric but was able to catch up to Moody and used him as a windblock for the third mile and rested a bit, which I'm sure annoyed him since I run like a three legged camel on this course.  Mile 3 was a bit slower at around 4:37 and I thought I had about a mile and a half left.  I tried to figure out the math on what an 8K would be, but only about three brain cells were functioning so I just guessed it would be about 5 miles so I better figure out how to breath.  I just could not get any air about mile 4.  But right then we came up to one of those downhill warning signs with a picture of a truck on it and a 9% grade!  I knew I could survive a mile at that kind of downhill so I relaxed again and that was my fastest mile at about 4:27.

We had a great evening with the Murphys at the barbeque and I met a few fellow bloggers which is always fun.  The kids and I splashed all the water out of the hot tubs.  We went on a hike Sunday morning since we were all too sore to run one of those trails again and had just a great time.

It's definetly time to take some time off from running after this run today.  We had great race prep the night before, we were waterskiing until 10pm!  It really did help to loosen up the legs.

It was a great morning before the start.  I sat with my cousin for a while and talked to a bunch of friends, Keith A, Scott E, Ben V, Burns and my high school coach who got me into the race last minute.  It was a reminder why I love running so much, such a beautiful morning.  Scott E invited me to run with them because they where shooting for a 2:50 today, but I really had no idea if I how or what pace to attempt, just too many injuries this summer.  I set in with a few guys keeping an even 6:10 pace and it felt pretty smooth.  For some reason my feet blistered at mile 4 and I knew 22 more miles would rip them up, but I've dealt with that before.

The first 7 miles just eased by.  We slowed down to around 6:20 pace for a bit and I was surprised when the halfway point came by at about 1:20.  It was the slowest halfway point for me in three years and I knew it wasn't going to get any faster today.  I could actually feel the muscle pain in my legs which was a first.  At 14 miles a master runner from Billings passed me and so I dropped to a 5:47 pace for the next 4 miles to see how it felt.  This is usually a pace that I am most comfortable at and I didn't tire out but I could just feel pain in my quads.  At mile 20 I think I could feel every muscle in my leg with each step.  I'm pretty sure it's just burnout this season and that Alta race sure impacted harder than I thought it would.  It just hurt to run. I decided to walk at each aid station, at least the next three and that made it possible to finish.  I lost about 5-6 minutes on those.  Allie blew by me at 25 and a half miles so I had to at least pick it up enough to pass her to the finish.

Slowest marathon in a few years but lots of fun!  My socks and shoes were bloody from torn blisters in the arches but at leats that got me a good recliner for a while in the first aid tent.  Keith A had a great race, right on my tail.  I didn't get to talk to Scott E at the finish, but I think he was pretty close to that 2:50.  Talked with a bit to quit a few bloggers which is always pretty fun.  I got harrassed by my old coach for running such a stupid schedule this summer and spent a few minutes talking to Paul P who looked like he had just strolled down the block after pacing someone to a sub 3 hour finish.  He also said it's been a lot of races this summer for me, so maybe everyone is just a lot smarter than me.  Obviously I am just getting slower this summer. :) I don't think Sammy beat Paul's time from last year so that's sweet.  The nicest thing today was that I had no pain at all from the torn achilles tendon, so I've done the right things there.  It was swollen up a bit.  My girls got in a fight and tears over who got the medal so I had to go beg for a second one!  They just love those moose medals.  I also had a chance to talk with Sasha P for a while although I was pretty dead by then.  He had a great race today and is pretty cool to talk too, lots of running knowledge.  We probably talked more about airplanes though.

good to see you and run with you a bit Steve, great time for fighting the injury and blisters. I think a great way to recover from a marathon is to go water skiing. I am here for you if you need an extra body. I even have my own ski and a dry suit so I am good to go into October. Well, just a shameless attempt to get myself an invite...

From Steve on Sun, Sep 19, 2010 at 19:57:28 from 173.127.123.97

You guys crack me up. This race would have been depressing this year for me if it hadn't been so much fun to run and talk to everyone!

Allie, that was fun getting passed by you at the end and having to kick it in to finish ahead of you. I was worried that last block about blocking your tape moment! I have a good story about that kind of finish..

My senior year in high school I went to the San Diego marathon with my track coach. He ran a pretty good race and was really into the zone at the end. At the end he was just ahead of the first female finisher and a photographer pushed him aside 50 feet from the finish line to get a better picture of her. He tripped and fell but got up and finished! In those years he was a 2:23 marathoner. That was Bob Henke, the TOU race director.

The girls wanted to do a race this morning so even though it was one week after the marathon I took them up to Smithfield and we ran a 5K.  It was a pretty small race and dang cold!  I got the kids in the stroller and we ran for 2 miles to warm up.  Natalie, the 8 year old, really wanted to do the race with her bike so I got her out of the double stroller and got her bike ready.  They were so excited this morning!

The race started up the canyon and we were pretty slow going up.  Natalie died on her bike about 1 mile up the canyon and I had her hold on the stroller with one hand so she could get towed up to the turn around.  They were both pretty upset I wasn't catching the two lead guys..Shelby, my 5 year old stood up in the stroller and said, "Dad, come on, I know you can run faster than this.  This is ridiculous!"  Natalie took off downhill at the turnaround and I didn't see her again until the end, but she was just glowing because she got "first".  Shelby and I cruised the downhill with the stroller and almost caught the first guy which redeemed me a bit in their eyes.

I went down to do a workout at the gym and a friend asked me to run a trail race with her tonight.  I would just have to do a 5 mile leg so I said sure.

The race course ended up being backwards along the Bonneville shoreline trail from Smithfield and ending up old main hill, so it was a ridiculous course!  My relay partner decided not to run it so I signed up for the full 10 miles.  Three other guys showed up that had run TOU so I knew I'd be in similar company with the wobbly legs!  We headed out towards Green Canyon and the pace was pretty slow, probably all of us were hurting.  The fastest guys were on the relay teams since the prizes were Ipads.  I saw Patric Rotich there so the pace had to be around a 5 min mile.  They started them 5 minutes after us so I kept looking over my shoulder to see if he was catching me!  I got into the lead about a mile into it with Jesse Dunn right behind me.  He passed me going up the canyon and I was tired enough to not care.  As we got along the rolling hills of the trail I noticed that I was catching back up and my legs felt all right so I passed him around mile 4.  When we hit the trail along Canyon Road he passed me again and I was dead.  I think I dropped back to around a 7 min pace and just held on.  Another Utah State runner passed me going up Old Main Hill to the finish and it was over.  I was pretty stoked my legs held up after the marathon, but overall got my butt kicked.

Beautiful long easy run out in the bayou, Lake Charles.  3rd run into my easy mileage weeks.  easing into 3 weeks of 80 mile target, long and easy baby!  Then it's time to hit it again.

Really tickled today that the downhill 8K at Alta before the marathon with Rob and others has perturbed some "Brooks athletes" on our sponsor list.  Apparently Brooks ranks their sponsored athletes and even though I have been so slow this fall a 23 minute 8K bumps me into 4th nationally and some guys complained!  I have no idea what the "assisted" or "hard" courses are, most of this is for fun.  It's just cool to see a race we go to for the barbeque and company get some feathers ruffled!

Hey Steve - I committed to doing a Grand Canyon rim to rim run with Jon Allen and a couple other guys next Monday. Close to 50 miles. I told them I was basically a road wunner who has never run over a marathon, but they seem willing to drag me along. What do you think - slightly crazy or completely insane?

I was down in Salt lake with my son for the weekend so this race fit in perfect before he got out of bed Saturday morning!  I was looking forward to seeing how my recovery was going and if the longer runs of the week had left a mark.  I thought this was a downhill course until I talked to my uncle, a police officer running security for the race, where the course was and he laughed.  It was one of the hilliest courses I have run for a bit!

We started out pretty slow and I was enjoying it since I didn't have a watch on.  But then it turned up the hills into the Avenues and started getting fun.  As we came back and started up the hill, a guy passed me and said something to the effect of, "come on you can make it, don't give up yet, keep it up".  That was it.  Just not cool to say that to an old guy.  It took me nearly a half a mile to pass him and put a gap between us.  :)

The ramp up to mileage has not seemed to affect that tandon so it's time to start getting some miles in again, yes!

Glad to hear you enjoyed my Grand Canyon story. It was definitely the most awesome thin I've ever done running wise. Next year we'll take some more time and either stay at the lodge or PARTY in your RV afterwards rather than drive six hours home. I'm pretty sure Jeff Shadley wants to go, so we'll have a great group.

First 5 miles averaging 7:30 pace, then I felt great both legs and wind so I decided to get a tempo workout in.  Perfect flat dirt roads for it and a sunny 58 degree day.  10 miles at 5:49 pace, fastest tempo since spring for me.  With a current weight of 163 and no speed work in the last 6 weeks, I figure this is about 95% effort for me.  I'm going to feel this tomorrow..

Lunch at Roosters with family today, the best cheeseburger on the planet.  I would have done nothing today but Rob called me up this week and asked if I'd get a long run in with him of 24 miles or so.

What a cool run, and great company.  I don't get the chance to run a lot with someone else so I love a change of pace.  I could feel that burger the whole way though and Rob is obviously in better shape right now than I am, so I felt it!

And then Rob's wife made us steak for dinner.  Can life get much better?  :)

I got back to the house with the kids and still needed that mileage so I hit a really slow 4 miler at 11pm.

After a long day starting out in New York with a broken airplane about 3am, I ended up in Salt Lake City and met up with Rob for a long run.  We headed up Emigration Canyon with light snow flurries.  I was worried about the weather since I havn't done much cold weather running and the warm front was sitting right over the range.  It turned out to be about perfect and a great run.  I can't believe how much quicker a long run goes when you have some company.  The cold hit my hands pretty hard.  I couldn't feel my fingers at all after 11 miles.  I could feel the altitude as well, just seemed like it was shorter breathes than I was used to.  According to the Garmin around 7:30 average pace, which felt about right.

I took in one Power Bar drink at about mile 10 with Rob and that was it for food intake on the run, consistent with what I have been trying this year, plenty of water but limited calorie intake on the long runs.

It has not been easy...I don't exactly love running in the cold.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
13.300.000.000.0013.30

13.3 miles late morning through the Bend river trail up to first dam and along Logan River trail.  I had no motivation to run at all today, I knew I had to basically run a half marathon to reach my goal.  The kids were having so much fun and there was so much to do with them, but I knew this was my last chance to try and get a 100 mile week.  I also knew it would be a hard run since the day before was a 15 miler.  Surprisingly, I was strong and had to hold back to stay on goal at a 7 minute pace.

I need that 1:12 for the second time running the Austin Half Marathon in four weeks and so I'm taking stock today of where I stand this year.

1.  I am slower than last spring when I was doing faster Tempo runs.  I have been doing more long recovery runs for a few months.  Any way to get that speed?  Quick?

2.  I am stronger, no injuries at all.  The long slow distance has done the job in that regard.  I just completed two 100 mile weeks and have no soreness at all.  That's a good sign.

3.  I am 6 lbs overweight at 156.  That's not good, but it would take liposuction this year to get off those last 6.  How the hell do you run 100 miles a week and not trim up?  On the flip side, that's free speed if I lose it by January 30.

4.  Now to find the time to get started on training.  I need four 10 mile runs at very close to race pace.  I need 4 track workouts around 10 mile distance with repeats at 10 seconds faster than race pace.  I need 3 long runs.  I need three 12 mile Fartlek runs.  The rest is fluff.  I'll probably get about 60% of this done.  But it's a goal at least..

Tempo run today.  I needed to get an idea of baseline to start some work on speed training.  Too much snow outside to run fast so I had to stay on the treadmill.  Pretty happy since this is the fastest I have run on a training run in 6 months.  I just started it up and kept at it.  No warmup..Probably suffer later for it.

10 miles at 10.5 miles per hour. 5:45 pace

Real happy to get this run in.  I have had this on my schedule for several weeks, but no time to get it in.  I needed an endurance baseline.  Last run of the year and the longest one, I think!  I aimed for 20, but at the 10 mile turn around felt great so I kept going.  I was worried about the pace, especially since it was on my mind how long it took me when I was starting marathoning to hit the 3 hour marathon, the 7 min pace.  It was a neat experience today to run through the 26.2 mark at just under 3 hours and feel great.  I slowed up after that 15 seconds a mile for the rest.  Two Mt. Dews on the run and a package of peanut butter crackers.
