Easy 5 miles. Just got done with an old RCA set replacing paper capacitors and out of tolerance resistors.  Accurate alignment of the IF transformers is up.  This is my weird hobby.  And I love it! Keeps me from getting too crazy about other things including work and running.

Is this an old RCA TV you are talking about? If so, after you get it up and running, are you able to receive a signal with it since most TV signals are digital?

Eva, Its an old five tube radio from 1937. I do have an old Packard Bell television from 1950 though. And yes, it requires a converter box to change the signal from digital to analog.

Interesting..

There is a very small shop that I run past every day. I have never been inside the shop but it is a specialty electronics shop and in the shop window there are many old radios, TVs, vacuum tubes, etc.

How do you find the tubes etc. for the set? Do they even make those kinds of vacuum tubes anymore?

How is the sound quality of the radio after you get it working?

Sounds like a great hobby!

Eva, vacuum tubes were made in probably the order of millions back in the day. Some tubes are hard to find especially those that are the globe type made in the early 30s and pre-1930s. Ebay is an excellent resource along with other small companies which sell them.

Most commercial radio tubes from the 30s and 40s are not hard to find. There are some factories both in Russia and China which still make tubes, mainly audio amplifier types.

The sound quality is great. Tubes have a warmth and sound quality that isn't matched by modern technology..
