Went with Sasha and family to Hogle Zoo today. On the way we got out on the Des News Marathon route and ran two miles with the kids and then families continued on to the zoo and Sasha and I ran the rest of the way to the zoo through Emigration Canyon. The first mile was down followed by three miles of pretty steep climbing. At the 4 mile mark it was all down hill to the zoo. We were not running at marathon pace effort but we were moving along very nicely so I will give myself credit for some marathon pace miles anyway. Our average for the 8 mile down stretch was 6:22 with the following splits according to the GPS:

 6:46
 6:17
 6:26
 6:29
 6:28
 6:26
 6:20
 5:45

We had a very strong headwind and it was quite warm so it was not really a pure easy run but again it was not quite marathon pace effort either. We picked it up the last mile just for fun.

We then spent the afternoon at the zoo with the kids. Overall a good day and a good 12 mile run. James took it easy today and only did two miles as he has a track meet tomorrow with a 1500 and an 800. It will be fun to see how he does as he is pretty excited.

Planning on 15 miles tomorrow. I am trying to convince Sasha to run a 15 miler at Deer Creek Resevoir with me instead of doing the same old Provo River Trail. Wish me luck!

Total of 18 miles today.

Took James to the BYU track meet in the morning and did 1.3 miles of warm-up and cool-down with James. He ran the 1500 in 5:39. He was not really feeling that great today but still gave it what he had.

I then met with Sasha and headed out on the Provo River Trail. Sasha did his normal 10 mile tempo where as I just wanted an easy long run. Joined Sasha again after his tempo and added more miles. Ended up running 15.9 miles on the river at an average of 6:53 per mile. Felt ok and was starting to really feel the heat by the end. My car said it was 79'F at the end of the run.

Ran .8 more miles with James as his warm-up and cool-down for an 800 meter race this afternoon. It was 86'F! James won his age group and was 2nd overall in the 800 with a 2:43. He was tired again and said he just couldn't get moving.

I only had about 65 miles planned this week but ended up with 81.75 miles this week (6 days) which is the most in a week for me since I started running again.

Standard 10 mile route along Provo River with Sasha. Easy run at an average pace of 6:55. Second have under 6:40 pace. The run was easy but my right foot was killing me the entire way. The right arch is hurting pretty bad for some reason. It has been hurting all day as well. Back to the ice and ibuprofin routine I guess.

Met Sasha at 6:00am. Ended up running 15.55 miles along Provo River at an average pace of 6:32. The bad news is my right foot was killing me every step of the run. The good news is other than the foot I felt great and never pushed the pace. This felt like an easy run pace the whole time and was very relaxed. Towards the end I was hitting consistent 6:15-20 pace and it still felt very easy. Now I just need to figure out what is wrong with my right foot.

Ok, not a god day for running for me. My right foot was in extreme pain this morning and I had to call it quits and turn back. I have rarely ever had to do this. I am usually pretty stubborn and will run through almost any pain. However, this morning was unbearable. My right foot hurts with every step on the inside top portion of the foot up about an inch from the top inside ankle area. Hard to describe but it is a very sharp pain that I could not continue to run on. I hit the elliptical for 20 minutes and it does not hurt on the elliptical. I jogged a little and it does not hurt as bad as this morning but it is still there. I went to the doctor and they took an x-ray but did not really see anything but also said that it is hard to detect a stress fracture with just an x-ray. They will order further tests if it still bothers me after doing the ice and ibuprofin routine a little longer. They suggested taking some time off and seeing if it starts to feel better. I am not one for taking time off so this is really a bummer for me. As I said I usually can just run through most injuries and just deal with the pain. I will ice again tonight and continue ibuprofin and see how it feels in the morning. If it feels ok I will probably go ahead and run but if it is still bothering me I may take a few days off and just hit the elliptical. I really do not need this right now. It is depressing to think about not being able to run right now.

Well, good news is the foot felt a lot better this morning. I got up and jogged on it to see how it felt. It felt ok but still there. I really wanted to go run with Sasha but there was a real nagging in my mind that said I better not. It was hard to give in and not go run anyway. I know if it started to feel better after one day then there is a possibility that it will completely heal if I give it another day or two. As much as I want to get out the door and run I need to force myself to take a couple more days off to see if it can heal up completely. Another piece of good news is that I am really starting to get the desire to really train harder and take things more seriously. Up until now I did not seem to have the same desire I did in the past when I was training hard. I am itching to get going again which is a good sign.

Easy run today after 4 days off to try and let me foot heal. Felt ok today and did not really feel like I was pushing the pace at all. Ended up running 6:41 average pace for the 10 miles with 2.5 miles at 6:12 pace in the middle. Even the 6:12 pace felt easier than marathon pace. The good news is that my foot did not hurt very much. There is still some pain in the same area but it is much improved. I can still feel it on almost every step but it is definetly heading in the right direction. Hopefully it will not get any worse as I run this week. I will continue with easier runs this week and hope for the best.

Easy 6 miles at 7:14 average pace. However, the bad news is I only ran 6 miles because my foot was killing me again. Not as bad as when I had to stop last week but close especially the first 2-3 miles. I will try to run another easy run tomorrow and see if it continues to get worse or not. I am starting to think it is a tendon problem as I cannot flex my toes on the right foot at all when I try. The pain seems to be right at the point where the tendon from the shin area connects to the inside top of the foot. I think it may be anterior tibial tendonitis after doing some research on the internet. The symptoms I am describing fit almost exactly.

Ran easy with my son James this morning. Foot still hurts so I wanted to just run easy and see how things progress. If it feels ok I will do more tomorrow. Continuing with ice and ibuprofin.

10.600.000.000.000.000.000.0010.60

Easy 10.6 miles along the Provo River today at about 7:06 average pace. Bad news is that the foot still hurts. The good news is that it is not any worse and the pain may actually be slightly less today. Ice three times a day and ibuprofin overdoses seem to be helping for now. Tomorrow is my last day in Utah for the next 6 weeks. I am off to Fort Lewis, Washington for some sea level training.

Easy 10 miles with Sasha and Nick. Good news is the foot actually felt a little better today. It still hurts but I think it is healing. I will keep up the ice and ibuprofin routine until all of the pain goes away. Well, I will try and post my running on the blog as often as I can while I'm gone but I may only get around to it once every three or four days. Hopefully I will return a skinnier fitter version of myself in 7 weeks! I hit the road about 11:00 today for Fort Lewis, Washington.
