Hello, I am heading down to Salt Lake next week for a surgical consultation for my labral tear with impingement in my hip. I am excited to read about your recovery and progress! I am struggling with keeping a positive attitude so your strength and spirit are definitely an example to me.

My appointment is with Dr. Aoki at the University of Utah. Because I live in Idaho, I don't know any other surgeons that specialize in this type of arthroscopic hip surgery. Any advice or suggestion on a doc for a second opinion would be great. Thank you and happy recovery,

Shelley Bernstein

Hi Shelley - I am sorry that you have also been dealing with this hip crap. Aoki did both my surgeries and I also saw Dr. West at TOSH for another opinion before each of my surgeries. As far as I know, Aoki and West are the only surgeons that do arthroscopic hip in this area. I went with Aoki because he had the most experience, but I did really like Dr. West too.

Feel free to send me a direct message if you want to talk more after you see Aoki. My only advice is to be up front with him on what your goals are after surgery. I don't think I was very clear with mine because he told me "I would do awesome," but apparently awesome didn't include running because now he is advising me to stop running :(

I won't lie. The recovery is a super long haul and to be honest I am not sure if I would do it if I had to do it all over again. I wish I would have found a great PT and exhausted all of my options before having the surgery.
