7 Miles on TM; tired after mentally exhausting day and only about 45 minutes to run, so I planned an easy progressive, starting at 7:30 pace and working down at 15 second increments. Problem was the severe side stitch that developed near end of Mile 4 (6:45 pace). I don't know if it was the lack of energy, stress, insufficient warm-up, or some combination thereof, but I actually had to stop completely. After a couple of minutes, I managed the final 3 Mile at 8:30 pace.

17 Miles on the beautiful, snow-covered streets of Little Rock. Ran 1.5 Miles to LR Marathon Mile Marker 16, then ran the course in reverse to Mile Marker 9, and back. This section of the race, which I will be running for the fifth time on March 2, passes the State Capitol, Little Rock Central High School, and the Governor's Mansion. I actually saw the Governor's limo and his state police escort twice near Central High. I'm thinking he was probably out with the First Lady taking in the snowy scenery.

Today, I paced the twelfth running of my hometown race, the Little Rock Marathon, in light rain and cool temps. This was my fifth finish at Little Rock, my tenth marathon overall, and my first time pacing (any race). There was another first for me during this race, when, at the unsanctioned Mile Marker 24.5 "aid station", I stopped to enjoy a cold brew.

I finished comfortably in 3:09 and change (3:10 Pace Group), sending ahead the two gentlemen (Tony and Gareth) who stuck with me from start to finish.

Thanks to my wife, Diana, for the support and kiss near our old apartment in downtown LR (near Mile Marker 10 and Governor's Mansion), and to my parents and kids, Max and Sophia, for the support and hugs at Mile Marker 16.

From Rob Murphy on Thu, May 01, 2014 at 14:31:19 from 163.248.33.220

Wyandotte is one of the "grittier", more working class suburbs of Detroit as compared to the much more affluent Oakland County.

6 Miles in 41:49 (6:58) from my house to Max and Sophia's soccer practice at 5:15pm at North Little Rock's Burns Park Soccer Complex; then, after two hours of chasing Max, Soph, and their friends around, ran the 6 Miles back to my house in 46:11 (7:42).

During rush hour, I can actually run the hilly, six-mile trek - through Camack Village, over the Big Dam Bridge crossing the Arkansas River, and along the Arkansas Trail on the north side of the river to Burns Park - faster than I can drive the 15 miles or so in my car. So running there allowed me to do two of the things I love most: running and being efficient.

On the return run, which includes a .75 Mile steep climb up Overlook, I ran the first 3 Miles (including half the climb) in 21 minutes, and I even passed a cyclist (which is also on my list of favorite things). But the climb took a lot out of me, particularly after a long day of traveling back from Michigan.

Nice warm and humid night for the MacArthur Park 5K in downtown Little Rock. My company's (Entergy, the largest public utility in Arkansas) four-person team won the "Corporate Cup" and took home the hardware, a pretty awesome statute of General Douglass MacArthur, who was born in Arkansas.

In addition to winning the team competition with a cumulative time of 88 minutes, Dave finished first in the 55-59 age group, Dad finished third in the 55-59 age group, Heather (another co-worker and the mandatory female member of our team) finished first in the 31-35 age group, and I finished second overall.

MacArthur is one of those rare historical figures that I have a hard time figuring out. Too many conflicting character traits going on there.

From Glory in the long run on Sat, May 10, 2014 at 09:22:01 from 24.151.171.49

Nice race, were you close to 1st place?

Ditto MacArthur's ambivalence. I feel he was a good military guy who got pulled into the fray and was unfortunately on the wrong side of genocide, but his arrogance consumed him? Possibly not genocidal, but was part of the machinations of a gov't struggling with caring for a society and encountering new lands and cultures.

You know, I was just pondering your 100 miler last year. That was a pretty incredible bit of sustained focus and motivation for an entire year. Pretty amazing considering you have a job and had a lot of other big things going on in your life.

Any plans for an encore anytime soon?

From Wesley Hunt on Tue, May 27, 2014 at 18:46:05 from 74.82.64.144

You know, Rob, I could come at this question from a lot of angles, but I guess I'll start with unfiltered honesty...

I would love to run another 100 (or several over a 3-5 year period) to do what I love most, which is to challenge myself to discover my absolute limitations physically and mentally (mental part is much more interesting). Now, I will be the first to admit that an ultra - or any running event, and particularly a race - is not the only way to push myself in this way. But it's the best way I know how to do so, and it may very well be the thing I love doing most outside of spending time with my family. Family, and the guilt associated with the absence therefrom, is where this gets really hard for me.

On one hand, I feel that I'm doing myself a disservice my not pushing myself to the absolute threshhold by maximizing whatever modest ability I do have. On the other hand, I just want to be with my beautiful wife and kids every single day.

I can never do another 100 unless my family is 100 percent behind me. Absent that, I will look for new ways to challenge myself through running. Perhaps I have a couple more descent marathons in me, and I certainly would enjoy going back to Boston one more time at some point...

Thanks, as always, for forcing me to thoughtfully consider all of this. As rediculous as it sounds, I've actually been struggling with this recently.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, May 28, 2014 at 12:45:05 from 163.248.33.220

I've wrestled with every one of those questions over the years Wesley. Can't say I have the answers except to say that 3 am runs usually avoid family conflicts.

Yep. Feeling good after stringing together a few weeks of higher mileage. Mostly slow stuff but I mix in gradual inclines and typically try to finish fast(ish). I was pleased with my short tempo yesterday.

Contemplating running the Arkansas Traveler 100 again the first weekend in October. Just doesn't sit right with me that I came up a minute short of winning my first ultra. It's a beautiful run 45 mins from my doorstep in the Ouachita National Forest.

Western States 100 on bucket list, and lottery chances are better every consecutive year you qualify.

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Aug 04, 2014 at 20:45:20 from 162.192.68.81

The TVs in our small, Company gym are set to ABC, ESPNU, and CNN...I try to time my runs with "The Herd", which airs locally from 9am-12pm on ESPNU, and periodically switch over to pop or classic rock radio (local stations). I like the "double shot" lunch on our local classic rock station from 12pm-1pm (back-to-back songs by same artists). In the afternoons, I switch between CNN and radio.

Actually Sunday was sort of a planned day off...walked a couple Miles with my dog and baby. More often than not, though, they just sort of happen based on (life) circumstances outside of my control. This is often frustrating, but I have to be honest with myself and admit I occasionally "steal" shortish runs on what should be a day off (planned or due to, again, life).

I think you might be the Buddy Edelin of ultra training. Buddy and his coach, Fred Wilt, probably invented modern marathon training in the late 50s and early 60s.

I'm going to withhold my verdict until after your next 100, but I think you may have stumbled, accidentally or on purpose, onto the truth of ultra training.

From Wesley Hunt on Tue, Aug 19, 2014 at 06:51:38 from 70.215.132.169

I read a little about Edelin online last night, including a pretty good essay at the link below:

Anyway, thanks, Rob, because that's high praise. Have you read Murphy's "A Cold, Clear Day"?Would welcome your suggestions on recommended reading any time (not just Edelin-related).

Beautiful morning on top of Mt. Nebo in Arkansas' Mt. Nebo State Park. Drove the family up last night, watched the sunset from outside our cabin nest Sunset Point, and woke up early for the Mt. Nebo Trails Run, a "fun run" (aren't they all?) and Race #2 in the 2014-2015 Arkansas Ultra Running Association ("AURA") Ultra Trail Series ( "UTS").

Unique course with which I was not familiar, but this didn't stop me from crashing down the mountain like a crazy road-runner, which, in hindsight, was the right strategy with Arkansas ultra-running legend Robert "PoDog" Vogler on my heals, only a minute or so back when we reached the bottom at Mile 11. From that point, we climbed straight up, approximately 2,000 ft., on the paved highway of switchbacks up the mountain.

Garmin had just over 13.5 Miles in 1:37:46 (7:14/mile).  Roughly half the course on runnable mountain bike trails and half on paved roads.

There's a Mt Nebo race in Utah - of course it's a marathon that drops 5000 feet (not kidding). Your Nebo race sounds better!

Congrats on the win.

Nice job!

I saw the race name and was going to invite you over for dinner.

I googled Mt. Nebo Ark. and Mt. Nebo Ut. Yours is cute.

8.75 Miles in 61:30 on a hot morning, already around 85 degrees at 8:30 am.; ran 1.75 Miles to Scott Field Track, where I rattled off 10X400m Repeats between 87 and 81 seconds with 400m jogging recovery around 8:00 pace; first 2 in 87, next 4 in 83-84, and final 4 in 81-82; during my cool-down home, I went ahead and ran 2 more .25 Garmin Repeats in sub-90 seconds, so I actually ended up running 12 total, or approximately 3 Miles at or near VO2 Max.  The last 2 repeats on the track were pretty hard after yesterday's downhill/uphill race and because I carried no fluid.

Congratulations on a great run at Mt. Nebo. It was a hot morning today. I mowed the lawn this morning, and underground weather said the temp around 9:00 was 90 degrees with a heat index of 102. Challenging conditions for repeats at Scott Field. ...Dave

AM: 40 Miles in 5:33 (8:20) on a descent morning given it's August in Arkansas.  Never stopped Garmin, so actual running pace was a bit faster.

Out the door at 3:30 am with a Gatorade, bottled water, and two gels for an 18.5 Mile loop downtown to State Capitol, to Clinton Library, over Clinton Bridge into NLR, then following North River Trail from start approximately 7 Miles (west) to Big Dam Bridge.  Crossing over BDB back into LR, I hit Mile 15, and climbed up Overlook and through Camack Village for 3.5 Miles back home.  After an approximately three-minute stop at house to change (shorts/hat) and refuel (Cliff Bar, Banana, and water), I grabbed two more Gatorades and headed back downtown to State Capitol, where I met Dave at 6:30 am.

From the Capitol, Dave and I took Cross Street back over to the River Trail, this time starting from the LR side, and ran to BDB, crossing over into Little Rock, and then the approximately 7 Miles back to Clinton Bridge in the opposite direction (east) from what I had run alone earlier this morning.  From Clinton Library, now back in LR, I weaved through MacArthur Park and by the Arkansas Arts Center, down Rock Street, ultimately cutting over on various side streets back to my office building to round out my 40-miler.  Dave ran a solid 17 on a humid morning with the temperature rising to 80 degrees by the time we finished.

A Couple Hours Later: 4 Miles in 31 mins on TM; 4 striders.

Total: 45 Miles including a mile or so of walking.

Beautiful day for the 24th running of the Arkansas Traveler 100 in the Ouachita National Forest.

6:00 am start at 48 degrees; peaking around 71 degrees in the afternoon; comfortable, early fall breeze all day long.

Miles 1 - 60 at 9:00/mile; Miles 61 - 100 at 10:00/mile.

17 GU Roctane Gels; 6 bags of GU Chomps; 13 20 oz. Gatorades; 3 peanut butter-and-honey sandwiches.

Ran alone from start to Mile 83.9 (Lake Winona) where I picked up my brother, Luke, as a pacer for the only stretch of night running. Running as much of the race as possible in daylight was part of my race strategy, and, in fact, I didn't even carry a flashlight/headlamp as an incentive to push hard for the 16-mile stretch between crew locations from Mile 68 (Powerline inbound) to Mile 83.9 (Lake Winona).

Third fastest time in race history, 22 minutes off course record.

Stayed clean (no falls) and kept my wits.

Stayed present, focused, and did my best, just as I had committed to do when talking to my son, Max, the night before the race. He believed in me. My wife, Diana, believed in and supported me throughout the process.

The efficiency and effectiveness of my two-man crew (my father, Mark, and Luke) was the envy of other runners. We crushed it, and there's no way sub-16 would have even been in the discussion without a near professional operation (approximately 7 minutes in 5 crew locations/aid stations).

My Granddad, who passed away Friday morning, was watching over me.

Man, oh man! Congratulations, Wesley. That's a crazy course improvement from last year.

Sorry to hear about your granddad. May he rest in peace.

Amazing race and spectacular time! You trained hard for this one and it paid off.

Sorry about your grandfather, he was there with you! I remember in 2008 I ran the TCM with the memory and in honor of a very dear friend who had just passed. Great way to honor your grandfather with the effort.

Congratulations Wesley - well done - you really put in the miles and they paid off. My condolences to you on the passing of your grandfather - I am sure it helped inspire you during the race to think he was watching over you.

Sorry about your grandfather. Heal-up buddy.

Congrats Wesley. You definitely put in the miles this summer, so it's great to see it pay off like that. Just knocking 2 hours or so off last year's time :-)

Re: the aid station efficiency. I've been following Ted Mahon's blog (mainly from a skiing perspective) but that's something I always see him stress in his running race reports - he's not always the fastest guy, but he gains a lot of ground by not wasting any time at all with aid stations. In and out quickly.

What's next for you?

From Wesley Hunt on Sat, Oct 18, 2014 at 19:59:19 from 162.192.68.81

Second consecutive year in Western States lottery. So now I have something like a 10% chance of getting in...of course, that would be next summer, but perfect for me because I like longish training cycles with slow steady build-up for target race. No strong desire to race often and not realistic anyway. LR Marathon has asked me to pace the 3:05 group and my wife's cousins in Chicago want me to run that Marathon next October, but I'm undecided (even about pacing) and on the fence about how hard I want to push at the faster stuff. I ran 2:45 in October 2012, and that feels like a decade ago.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Oct 18, 2014 at 20:21:07 from 24.10.247.181

If you get into Western States you should come out here and do a week of training in the Wasatch.

A lot of treadmill miles--do you generally run these at any kind of incline?

From Wesley Hunt on Sun, Nov 16, 2014 at 18:57:44 from 162.192.68.81

I run a lot of miles at a 1.0 incline and a lot at no incline. Right now, because I'm just doing maintenance, I'm not as focused on my mileage, incline, etc. But when training and building up for a race, I do the majority of my quality miles at a 1.0 incline.

Sounds like a day off?

Question. What's the purpose of the one mile treadmill walk?

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Nov 24, 2014 at 15:23:33 from 70.215.128.182

Nope. I drafted a motion to waive an administrative hearing, thereby reducing costs, thereby generating shareholder value no doubt...

When I was trading for the 100 and doing high mileage, including my marathon TM workouts, I periodically used these walks (4mph and at least 2.0 incline) to recover and simulate the race. Today, I was just checking email and finishing up a panel discussion on CNN regarding the Michael Brown shooting.

Hope you are well, Rob. Enjoy the holidays.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Nov 24, 2014 at 17:18:33 from 24.10.247.181

I seriously figured it was something like that.

So, it sounds like you're working in the private sector? Your profile is a little vague. I'm sensing something less than enthusiasm in the first paragraph there. Or was that light-hearted sarcasm.

Just as long as you don't bill me for this exchange.

We have some unorthodox Thanksgiving plans that I'll blog about. Should be fun.

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Nov 24, 2014 at 17:52:01 from 162.192.68.81

All of the above...it was true, less than enthusiastic, and ripe with light-hearted sarcasm.

I work as regulatory counsel for Entergy, a large public utility in this part of the country. It's a good Company, based in New Orleans, promotes diversity, relatively socially responsible. I'm very fortunate...started 2 days after I graduated from law school nearly 7 years ago.

Great, well-organized race(s) on awesome trails, including quiet a bit of single track. Offerings include the 10K, a 4-Miler, and a 2.5 Mile hike.

Ran pretty well and thoroughly enjoyed myself, finishing 2nd overall in 40:56 (6:36/mile).

From my house, cutover to H Street, to Kavanaugh, then Markham toward downtown; at roughly Mile 4, turned north on Park Street, followed by a quick crossing of Cantrell to Riverdale; stayed on Riverdale/River Trail for 3+ Miles, then up Overlook at approximately Mile 9, and through Camack Village to Heights; Taylor Street to Country Club to Kavanaugh, to Hughes, where I crossed back over Cantrell toward home.

Great day for a run...and an afternoon walk!

14.25 Total Miles.

Amazing! Don't know how you handle this much treadmill work. Gym? Home? Do your kids yell at you? I'm inspired...looking at my treadmill with more hope every day. If you can run this much on a treadmill, it prove all us crazy busy people can.

When are you going to grow a shaggy, ultra trail runner type beard?

From Wesley Hunt on Thu, Dec 18, 2014 at 21:17:54 from 162.192.68.81

Dude, I had a gnarley beard until about a week before the first 100 miler in October 2013...and then I wore a hat in the race.

This year...well, I looked like a clean cut road runner who thought the whole trail thing looked kind of fun.

11 Miles untimed on a cool morning around 41 degrees in Luttle Rock.

Enjoyable pace along one of my favorite, hilly runs; H Street to Kavanaugh, down Lookout to River Trail, then up Overlook and back home through Camack Village.

Off to folks' house near Malvern for the first of several family get-togethers over the holidays. My brother's family made it in from Virginia yesterday.

Couldn't sleep...so hopped out of bed for 19.25 Miles in 2:28 on a nice morning around 41 degrees. Ran the BIG loop downtown past State Capitol, then to Clinton Library and over Clinton Bridge, next picking up the Arkansas River Trail back west through North Little Rock for 7+ Miles, and finally, over Big Dam Bridge back into Little Rock, up Overlook and through Camack Village and the Heights via University back home.

Mark me down for a smooth 20 because I plan to take my dog for a walk at the park later.

12 Miles in 1:23:43 (6:59) on a coldish, overcast day around 40 degrees.

From my parents house, I ran north on Hwy.171 for 4 Miles, then west on Hwy. 290 for 2 Miles toward Hot Springs (and past my old Methodist summer camp, Camp Tanako) before turning around and heading back. Big negative split because it took me a while to get warmed-up (and motivated).
