17 Miles in just over two hours.  Beautiful morning for a run following church, but the wind off the Arkansas River along the Little Rock / North Little Rock River Trail was pretty brutal.  Good start to 2012.

Still waiting on those New Year's Resolutions 1-10.

Since I didn't make any myself I thought I might steal one of yours.

From Wesley Hunt on Tue, Jan 03, 2012 at 17:18:43 from 198.8.4.11

Wesley Hunt 2012 Resolutions:

1. M-F: Up at 4:00am every morning to run, then read, in that order. Life's too short to sleep.[As an aside, I just finished Brutal Journey about the Narvaez Expedition across North America in the early 16th Century (not great), and I'm currently halfway through Undaunted Courage (very good) by Stephen Ambrose; many others on my radar, and I'm also open to suggestions].

2. On weekends, make an effort to run at River Parks, on trails, or some other location not my neighborhood.

3. Attend 8:30am Worship Service to supplement 9:30am Sunday School. A very thoughtful, academic, and engaging pastor recently came to Little Rock, and he's excellent; multiple Chronicles of Narnia references this past Sunday. Of course, I'm biased, because he conducted my wedding ceremony.

4. No beer until I cross the finish line at Boston; then, lots of it.

5. Pass along my love of America's Pastime to Max as he plays tee ball for the first time this Spring.

6. Make good decisions (or at least better ones).

7. Talk less and shave more (per my wife).

8. Forgive Albert Puljols and forget Tony Romo.

9. Continue writing in my journal, at least weekly, and preferably more.

10. Put one foot in front of the other and see what happens (per brother). If racing goals not achieved, life goes on. Family still happy and healthy, beer still tastes good, Hogs' spring practice still starts in August, etc.

11. Stay within 10 minutes of Rob Murphy at Bston.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Jan 03, 2012 at 21:09:41 from 76.27.122.13

You were serious!

I'll have to respond in more detail later but for now let me say that #4 is a big mistake. "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy".

Rob - Agreed. Let's scratch #4. Overly ambitious anyway...replace it with "Train like John Landy."

Out the door at 4:30am (2012 Resolution #1) for 10 Miles on a frigid morning well below freezing in my neighborhood.  After a warm-up mile that didn't warm me up, I ran 6 Miles at 6:55/Mile, an easy mile, and 10X200m striders with 200m recovery between striders.

Do I get credit if I felt like I was going faster than 6:55?  In little Rock, anything in the 20s is cold, and I was fightin' it.

Committed a cardinal sin yesterday...skipped my long run.  And frankly, I didn't do much today to make up for it.  10 Miles on the treadmill in 85 minutes.

I'm trying to stay positive, and I've continued to train through it, but my left foot is really bothering me.  The bone running along the outside of my foot hurts (particularly in the morning and after running), and I have what I think is a stone bruise on my heel.

Need to keep an eye out for possible stress fractures with foot pain. Pain on the top of the foot is an early indicator of that in my experience ( having had 2 sfx's in my running years).

Sounds similar to what I've been struggling with. I hope it heals quickly for you, riding a stationary bike at around 90 rpms is a decent way to maintain fitness while resting your foot. You likely already know that. Best of luck!

Thanks, Rob. Tried to identify the most intense workout that I could complete with the least effort and strain...so I chose quarters (I hope that makes sense).

I'm having a really hard time running fast miles right now. Foot is sore, but I'm hanging in there.

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 23:58:08 from 76.27.122.13

With marathon prep logging consistently high mileage is the most important thing. A little goes a long way when it comes to speed - don't force it. All the long, aerobic miles you put in now will benefit you in April. I like throwing in a few fast quarters when I don't have the mental energy to do anything longer. Makes me feel fast without wearing me out.

Don't be afraid to take a couple days off. And remember to ice your food for 15 minutes or so a couple times a day.

16 Miles in right at 1:52:00 on a cold morning of 31 degrees...down by the river.

Great run this morning, crossing over the Two Rivers Bridge into the North Little Rock side of Two Rivers Park; followed River Trail west to exit of park, then north briefly past some beautiful horse farms to Pinnacle Valley Rd.; west on Pinnacle Valley Rd to the back entrance of Pinnacle Valley State Park, where I climbed for about a mile to a beautiful, scenic overlook.  Turned around and headed back along the same route.

Four-Mile pace splits were 7:05/mile, 7:14/mile (uphill), 6:54/mile (downhill), and 6:47.  Felt pretty good about the negative splits.

Looking forward to a nice, easy 18-miler tomorrow with my father, Mark, who's training his tail off for Boston (he's never run a marathon where he didn't set a PR...okay, so he's only run two, but that's still pretty impressive).

8 Miles, untimed, on a cold morning in my Little Rock neighborhood.  Opting against a long run this week because of my foot, which remains an issue (some are days worse than others). Overall, I've had good, consistent mileage, and looking forward, I plan to get in a couple of 20-milers over the next couple of weeks.

Ended the run with a few sets of pull-ups and push-ups at the neighborhood park, which is about a quarter mile from my house.

I want to share an "In the news" brief from the Arkansas Democrat Gazette

David Doty, superintendent of the Canyons School DIstrict in suburban Salt Lake City, said the district decided against using "Cougars" as a mascot for a new high school in part because some see the word cougar as carrying a "negative double entendre."

To my SLC friends and fellow bloggers...Seriously???

As to my running, today's workout include 8 Miles in 1:01:30 with my coworker, Dave, along the North Little Rock River Trail, and 3 Miles on the treadmill--including 4X.25 Mile Repeats at 5K pace--after returning from the outdoor portion of the run.

Ya'll are just lucky the "cougar" story was picked up from the AP Wire rather than being written by a local, Arkansas writer. The opportunities are endless. For example, consider the following rewrite:

"David Doty, superintendent of the Canyons School DIstrict in suburban Salt Lake City, said the district decided against using "Cougars" as a mascot for a new high school because round here, that's a dirty word--it means someone's callin' your Grandma pretty and that Granny likes it."

Why don't they have a track or cross country team?

That's a great question that I'm going to look into. High school track and cross country isn't much to write home about in Arkansas...ironic because of our success at the collegiate level.

Rob, I did some digging and it appears that LR Central High does have both boys and girls track and cross country. At least the school's AD has declared for these sports throught the Arkansas Athletic Association.

I just noticed that they had sports schedules listed for everything but those two. Good detective work.

I know that there are some areas of the South where running is considered an offbeat activity. I used to go running in my mom's hometown of Ripley Mississippi and i'd get lots of puzzled looks.

Okay, so fellow blogger Rob Murphy's "Bonus VO2 Max" workout that includes incorporating 0.5 Mile Repeats at 5K pace into the latter half of a medium-long run...on a treadmill no less...is pretty freaking tough.  I only managed 4X0.5 Mile Repeats, with half-mile jogs to recover, starting at Mile 9, and I was spent.

Managed to run 3 Easy Miles following the repeats for 15 Total Miles.  With the exception of the two-miles of recovery jogs, and a very slow Mile 13, I ran the remainder of the workout between 7:47 and 7:09, averaging just under 7:30/mile for 10 Aerobic Miles (1-8, 14, and 15).

22.25 Miles in 2:34:52 (6:58) on a cool, overcast day in Little Rock.  Ran from the base of Two Rivers Bridge on the Little Rock side of the River Trail, across the Big Damn Bridge onto the North Little Rock side of the River Trail, and followed the trail just past the 11 mile mark at the Junction Bridge that connects to the Clinton Presidential Center and Park in downtown Little Rock; turned around and ran back.

Recorded 7-Mile Splits for no particular reason:

Miles 1-7:  7:01/mile

Miles 8-14:  6:55/mile

Miles 15-21:  7:01/mile

Last 1.25:  6:35 pace

Felt very comfortable throughout, which was the plan going into today's run, and other than a couple of gels, I didn't hydrate because several of the water fountains on the River Trail were not working (perhaps they shut them off in the winter?).  This was a slow MP run, but after last week's fast MP run (18.25 at 6:31/mile), this is exactly what I needed. Distance was key today.

Very impressive. Are you going to revise your Boston goal in light of this?

From Wesley Hunt on Fri, Feb 03, 2012 at 23:03:57 from 99.25.245.254

Seriously? I think I'll stick with 2:50... I've run one sub-3:00, a 3:04, and a 3:05. Sure, I'm still learning a lot about race strategy, etc., but running a PR by nearly 5 minutes at the Mecca of distance running is going to be hard enough.

By the way, would you have any reservations about running a marathon on March 4, 2012, 6 weeks prior to Boston? As I mentioned previously, I'm still contemplating whether I should run Little Rock as a confidence boosting (hopefully) training run of sorts.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Feb 04, 2012 at 09:35:36 from 76.27.122.13

I'd probably stick with the 2:50. But don't be surprised if you go faster.

I know, it's hard to resist the hometown race but I think that's a little too close to Boston if Boston is the priority. It's a perfect time for a half though. Does the LRM have a half?

Hey Wesley. I'm watching the new American Experience episode on Bill Clinton. Pretty good stuff in my opinion.

I could get sad about our current state of political affairs if I spent too much time reflecting on it.

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 22:47:26 from 99.25.245.254

I have not watched it (recording), but from everything I've read and heard, PBS does a good job capturing President Clinton's essence as a living contradiction, a man struggling with his own potential and desire to do "good" and be "great" despite personal demons that he could not and did not defeat. The popular trend today is to talk about what Clinton did not accomplish rather than judging him on those things he did. Deeply rooted, moral shortcomings--imperfection--made him more human, and at least for me, greater still.

I am not a Clinton apologist. He failed. Apologized. Failed again. At least once, probably more...but in the end, he suppressed those demons. And the works and accomplishments of his post-Presidency reflect an inner joy and peace he was never able to find in the White House.

Redemption is tricky. Though available to each of us, we must be willing to give up control and trust in something greater than ourselves.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 10:16:00 from 205.127.70.66

Good thoughts.

I think the tendency to judge him by what he did not accomplish is a natural one. We probably have never had a president who spent more time thinking about what he would do as president before achieving it than Bill Clinton did.

I'd be interested in your thoughts once you do watch it. Part II is on tonight I think.

I'm a sucker for my hometown race.  The 10th anniversary of the Little Rock Marathon was this morning, and it was a beautiful day for racing.  Race start temperatures were in the low 40s, but the temperature rose quickly to near 60 by the time I finished 19th overall, the 17th male and first in my age division.  Other than a pretty strong headwind during Miles 18 - 21 heading west along the Little Rock River Trail, there was very little to complain about today.  This was just what I needed heading into Boston in 6 weeks.

Miles 19 - 24: 40:06 (6:41/mile)

Last 2.5 Miles: 16:34 (6:40/mile)

Pretty tough racing starting at Mile 18, passing two solid runners during the most mentally, if not also physically, challenging part of the race out and back along the Little Rock River trail.

I just woke up from a short nap with my son, Max, and I'm looking forward to a fun afternoon at the neighborhood park with my kids before heading to dinner with my wife's folks who live nearby in Little Rock.

1 Mile at 7:30 to warm-up followed by 2 Miles at 6:31/mile, 1 Mile at 6:15, and 1 Mile at 6:11; so, I was tired and had to use the bathroom, which I did.  But to my credit (I think), I jumped back on the treadmill for 8X200m repeats at 5:49 pace with 1 minute of easy jogging between repeats.

Frankly, I didn't have much time today, and I didn't feel great, but I ended up getting in a pretty solid 7 Miles.

My wife made chicken enchiladas tonight, and I dominated.

Challenging, exhillarating, painful, joyful, frustrating, beautiful...

Eternally grateful to my amazing wife, Isabel, for her support along my journey over the last 18 months (5 Marathons); my brother, Luke, and his wife, Melissa, for taking the time and making the sacrifice to come to Boston for an anxiety-filled weekend; and to my mother, Phyllis, and father, Mark, who have supported me, forgiven me, and loved me every day of my 29 years on this planet.

Jeff - Your effort on Monday was super-human and inspiring. Thanks for including me at dinner. You have a lovely family, and I enjoyed meeting all of you.

Steve - That's a very nice thing to say, particularly given my performance on Monday. But alas, as they say, if it was easy everyone would do it. Really enjoyed meeting you, Walter, and Rob as well. Rob is one of the key reasons that I've been able to run sub-3:00 twice over the last 18 months.

6.5 Miles in 49 minutes on the treadmill set to 1.0 incline.  So, if my math is right, I've ran 33 Miles this month, including today's 6-miler.  At any point now, I'm expecting to be kicked off the blog.  Remind me to never play in charity basketball tournaments...organize them, support them, raise money to support the cause, BUT DON'T PLAY.

Left knee still sore from sprain on April 28.  Had two good runs last week, but I pushed a little too hard on Monday. Anything approaching MP hurts.

Need an escape from reality, and fortunately, I get one this weekend when I meet up with my brother, Luke, in Detroit for our first in a series of "Best of [insert U.S. City]" weekend trips that targets untraditional travel destinations, i.e., Detroit.  Should be fun, and interesting, no doubt.

Returned from Detroit yesterday after an excellent weekend with my brother, Luke.  Caught a Tigers' game on Saturday afternoon noon after spending a few hours in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.  Sunday, we were very impressed with the world class art collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Detroit Eastern Market weekend farmers' market, which was celebrating its annual Flowers Day, with nearly 200,000 in attendance.  Good times, and I made it back to Little Rock in time to read my beautiful kids bedtime stories!

am:  8 Easy Miles on a gorgeous morning in my West Little Rock neighborhood; humidity down, shirt off, feeling better as we look toward June. If I can get my knee right, I'm planning to take the sage advice of my friend and fellow blogger, Rob, who suggsted that I consider focusing on my speed for several months (he actually used the word "year", but let's not get crazy). I began considering this prior to Boston, and a poor performance there confirmed what I know to be true. I need a change of pace--to motivate me, to discipline me, to give me the competitive edge I have begun to carve out over the last 18 months. Of course, the end-game is still the Marathon. What else?

If there was a trail, dirt or rock path, I went down it.

If there was a creek, I jumped in it.

If there was a hill, I climbed it.

Wore my Merrell Trail Gloves, which were nice, and a good change in pace with my calves feeling the brunt of the workload.

8 Miles on a nice morning in my neighborhood. I mean, to be honest, it was pretty freaking hot, particularly given it was 5:00 am. But then again, it's all relative when you're locked into heat index running for the next three months--and at least the humidity was down a little.

Calves a little tight after yesterday barefoot trail glove running experiment, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I also was proud of the blisters on my forefoot, which provide evidence that the barefoot trail gloves were going their job.

AM:  8 Miles in just under an hour on the treadmill; ran the final mile at sub-7:00 (for no other reason than to finish my workout in under an hour).

Too much basketball on SportsCenter. Don't get me wrong, it's been a descent NBA Playoffs, particularly the Eastern and Western Semis, but I don't need to hear everyone's perspective the morning after. Just show me Russell Westbrook dunking on Tim Duncan and Paul Pierce giving King James a facial, and I'm good.  Stick with the highlights, brother.  Save the commentary for the afternoon/evening when I can get a little Wilbon and Magic pre-game analysis.  When do the Olympics start anyway?

PM:  4 Miles in 29:15, including a 200m strider at the end of each mile, on the treadmill.

TOTAL:  12 Miles.

8 Miles in 63 minutes on a great morning, 65 degrees, in lovely downtown Little Rock.  Headed south this morning from my office down Scott Street all the way to Roosevelt, where I slipped under the Interstate, ran through the Little Rock National Cemetery, and headed back North up Confederate Blvd., and then College (I think), before getting my bearings at the 4 Mile mark and entering the Heifer International Global Village (and International HQ) from the south entrance.  Jogged along the path behind Heiffer and the Clinton Presidential Library, crossed over the old Rock Island (Clinton) pedestrian bridge, reconnected with the River Trail in North Little Rock, and headed back east.  Crossed back over the Junction bridge, another of Little Rock's pedestrian bridges crossin the Arkansas River, and "toured" he Riverfront Sculpture Garden behind the Peabody Hotel, which is near the finish line of my hometown race, the Little Rock Marathon.

Very urban, gritty, fulfilling, and insightful run.  Little Rock/North Little Rock has a lot to offer, and unfortunately, many of its residents know nothing about such opportunities.  For example, who knew that Little Rock had a well-endowed and vibrant public arts committee contributing to the quality of life of the City's residents.  In October, the Sculpture in the River Market Committee will host the sixth annual Sculpture in the River Market event, featuring local and national artists, public and private showings, and a public art competition with the winner awarded a $60,000 commission to instal a work in Riverfront Park (along the Arkansas River).  Check out the link below if you want more information:

  http://www.sculptureattherivermarket.com/

Finally, Little Rock features a number of sculptures tied to Arkansas historical events, individuals, etc., including the Little Rock Nine sculpture, Testament, which was dedicated to the Little Rock Nine on the eve of the 50th Anniversary of the Central High Crisis.  The installment of this piece received national press, such as the USA Today article at the link below:

            http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-08-29-Littlerock_N.htm

It's sort of like my recent trip to Detroit, which was excellent.  People often have preconceived notions about a place despite having never been there.  They judge it based on a snapshot of what they see on the news or hear third-hand from someone who was there for a two-hour business trip.  There are some great U.S. Cities out there that do not receive enought credit and/or get a bad rap based on infamous, historical events.  Respect the history...but focus on the present.

My brother will appreciate today's run. Every time he's back home in Arkansas, Luke loves hitting the trails at Lake Catherine State Park, which is only a few miles from my parents' home between Malvern and Hot Springs, Arkansas.

First 4 Miles were rugged and steep single track trails; took Falls Branch Trail to the Waterfall, then headed straight up for over a mile on Mountain Dam Trail; after taking in some truly breathtaking views of Lake Catherine and the State Park, I headed back down and reconnected with Falls Branch.  I topped off a great effort, on little sleep, with 3.5 Miles on the pavement around the campgrounds.

Trails Miles at 9:14/mile; Road Miles at 7:26/mile; 7.5 Total Miles in 1:02:47.

Tough running today.  As the old Hogs' B-Ball Coach, Nolan Richardson, was fond of saying, "If you ever see me in a fight with a bear...worry about the damn bear."  I felt the same way after today's run.  15 days and counting.

Great workout! That is a good question about the endorphins...our world would be better off if more folks actually took the time to exercise and get this kind of high instead of the bad type (external induced).

Hope you had a good time with your Dad...the best kind of Father's Day present is just spending quality time.

I couldn't agree more, Jeff. It's stronger than caffeine and a heck of a lot healthier than alcohol, etc. Distance running and heavy mileage is not for everyone, but making health and fitness a priority has so many tangible and intangible benefits.

And thanks for saying that about Father's Day. My son, Dad, Grandfather, and I had a great time at an Arkansas Travelers Minor League ballgame.

12 Miles in 1:49 with my co-worker and fellow FRB'r, Dave, on a hot, hot, hot Monday in Little Rock.  We're looking at triple digit heat with a 110 Heat Index today.  And people actually question why Dave, Kevin, and I get up so early?  Self preservation.

I have discovered my true love--a love that may have existed before I was even aware of it:  heavy, consistent mileage, growing stronger each mile (and each day).  And I was surprised by joy, if you will.  I've always embraced the discipline necessary to be a committed distance runner, but the passion was and is missing at the shorter distances.  Even the shorter training runs...but the rhythm, energy, and spiritual connection I feel when going long...makes me strong.  And gives me peace.

Really happy my old man, Mark, dragged me to the Firecracker Fast 5K this morning.  One of the bigger 5Ks in Arkansas, with a rich history, this year's race was the 36th annual running.  Two things are fairly unique about this race.  First, with the exception of a half-mile climb during Mile 3 near the Little Rock Zoo, this race is almost entirely downhill, hence the name, Firecracker "Fast" 5K.  The second unique feature is the awards.  Because of the size of the field (nearly 1500 runners), only the first 100 males and first 100 females receive trophies shaped like afirecracker (or piece of dynamite on a trophy base!).  No age groups.

I am very proud of my Dad for his final kick, which placed him 96th overall, good enough for a top 100 firecracker trophy!  He ran 21:00 even (6:47), and I came in at 17:19 (5:35) for 13th overall.

After the race, we ran the course in reverse, uphill, for a three-mile cool-down.  So, including my two-mile warm-up, I got in 8.1 Total Miles.

Finally, Dad and I topped off our morning with a great breakfast at the home of a coworker who lives nearby the race start.  All the Entergy runners were in attendance, and we very much enjoyed ourselves as we stuffed our faces with fresh fruit and avocado, eggs, bacon, and cinnamon bread.

Happy 4th to all.  Eat a hot dog!  And don't feel guilty about it!

15 Miles in 1:56:10, starting at 3:00 pm with heat index hovering around 105.  Headed west on Hwy. 171 from my parents house with a bottle of water, then turned south toward Hot Springs at Mile 4; not my typical medium-long run route when in Malvern/Hot Springs, but it did take me by my old stomping grounds, Camp Tanako--a United Methodist Youth Summer Camp--where among other things I (1) Performed "You are my fire" by the Backstreet Boys, along with 3 friends, at the Camp Talent Show; (2) Wrote and distributed an anonymous essay entitled "Camp Love" that really sent the female campers (not to mention the counselers) over the edge (as I inteded); and (3) Became a stronger Christian, man, and human committed to helping those less fortunate than myself.

Thanks to the fireman, Paul, at the County Fire Station, for being kind enough to give me a bottled water.  This allowed me to finish today's run with minimal stoppage time.

AM:  2 Easy Miles followed by approximately 1 Mile at 6:15 and approximately 1 Mile at 6:00.  Why were Miles 3 and 4 approximate you ask?  Well, the treadmill shorted out, ironic given it's in a gym owned and operated by a public utility.  So I switched outlets, only to have it die on me again as I was hammering away at a 6 minute mile.  I may have hit--rather, lightly struck--the treadmill at this point, and I do recall considering how good it would feel to throw the treadmill out the 28th floor window...otherwise, that part of my workout was excellent.

After the second breakdown, I went outside and ran 2 Miles pretty hard, probably around MP, settling for 6 Total Miles before running to a 1:00 pm meeting.

Frustrating, but I'm down from the bridge.  Feeling too strong to let it get me down.

PM:  Half-mile down the drive, 8 Miles in 59:41 on the dirt/grass shoulder along Hwy. 171; half-mile up the drive; jumped on the pavement and ran timed Mile 8 right at 6 minutes.

I needed this run to clear my head.  Locked back in.

Total:  15 Miles.  Interesting day.

A public utility? See that's your problem right there! As any good Republican would tell you, the private sector could deliver the same treadmill services cheaper and more efficiently.

From Wesley Hunt on Thu, Jul 12, 2012 at 08:15:33 from 198.8.4.10

Pseudo "public utility", recognized as such by the Arkansas statutes. As such, the Supreme Court recognizes our "right" (but certainly not "guarantee") to earn a fair rate of return for investors. Entergy Corp. (ETR) is publicly traded and heavily regulated at both the state and federal level. And I'm quiet certain I rank as one of the most liberal public utility employees in the United States. Thankfully, I have been pleased with our current executives committment to environmental (and social) responsibility. For example, our CEO was out in front of cap and trade, and regardless of what you thought of the various proposals, he was one of the few utility sector leaders to go there.

16 Miles in 2:11:58 on a warm and muggy afternoon in the Ouachita National Forest about 35 miles west of Little Rock.  Parked at the Lake Winona Spillway and ran an out-and-back on Forest Service Road 114, carring only a 16 oz bottled water; rolling hills with several tough climbs; deer to human ratio was about 20 to 1.

No doubt, this was a tough run, particularly given my poor planning with respect to fuel and a relatively low energy level.  That  said, ask and ye shall receive...at Mile 14, battling borderline dehydration, I prayed for rain.  Honestly, I shouted to the heavens, and not 10 minutes later, the heavens parted and emptied a perfect, beautiful shower on my head for the remainder of my run, cleansing my mind, body, and soul.

Sure was good that it rained. You might consider using a hydration pack. I use a Camelbak Rogue (45 oz). Lake Winona is part of the course of the Arkansas Traveler 100 mile ultra held on the first weekend of October.

You are right, Dave. I was fortunate today, but not very smart. The Camelbak or a couple of handhelds seem essential for running in a remote location like that. Really no way to stage the course. I very much enjoyed myself, though.

Picking up some good mileage over the last few weeks, and I plan to continue the trend, targeting 80 miles/week to see how my legs handle the load.  Need to do a little better job with my diet and a lot better job with my hydration on longer runs in the summer heat.  I am sticking with my plan to forego racing this summer (with the exception being the July 4 5k I ran with my Dad after some prodding on his part), and with this in mind, I'm starting to consider my fall/winter race calendar.  A couple trail ultras seem promising, and I would like to work in one road marathon in as well.  Boston 2013 is in the back of my mind because of last year's massacre...but no firm decision on that front.

In my haste to make an 8:00 am meeting at my office building in Little Rock (I had dinner and stayed with my parents in Hot Springs), I ended up running shoeless.  So, I took my medicine and ran barefoot (actually in socks) for 12 Miles in 94 minutes on the treadmill.  The thing is, the only time previously that I have run barefoot was for a couple of miles on the shoreline at the beach.  And that doesn't count...so I think tonight, why not give it a shot, and in the process, turn a negative into a new and poaitive experience.

I know what most of you eliters, road warriors, and seasoned marathoners are thinking:  naive, wreckless, and well, stupid come to mind.  And while it's true my feet are beat up and hurt like hell, I got my 12 Miles in...

Appreciated the critter inventory. Here in our desert climate we have way fewer critters than you do down south.

Of course that means way less road kill too.

I cannot decide if your previous email was making fun of the South, e.g.," more roadkill to eat," or simply envious, e.g., "wish we had more roadkill to eat!". Given your southern connections and appreciation of southern culture, surely the latter, eh?

From Rob Murphy on Wed, Aug 08, 2012 at 18:02:02 from 24.10.249.165

Just a simple observation.

Back when I used to live in Florida and did a lot of cycling, this would present me with a dilemma. I'd be out riding on these suicidal roads with no shoulder or bike lane and dump trucks and semis roaring by me at seventy mph on my left. Then I'd encounter a dead armadillo or possum perfectly positioned in my path. Couldn't go right, couldn't go left, so it was right over the critter. Fun hosing the chunks out of my chain and spokes afterwards.

Jake / Bret - Thanks, gentlemen.

Rob - How can you make fun of my picture without knowing the specific look that I was trying to achieve? It's the "yes, I'm wearing a fishnet hat and not taking this silly 5K that I really didn't want to run seriously.". Does that help?

As to my expression, that's fierce determination, brother!

From Wesley Hunt on Wed, Aug 29, 2012 at 16:22:31 from 74.82.64.160

Thanks, Jeff. I'm ramping up the mileage in preparation for the Sleeping Bear Marathon outside of Traverse City in Mighican. Very scenic, running up to the sand dunes and overlooking the Manitou Islands...

And I'm sort of getting the itch to return to Boston given last year's circumstances.

16.5 Miles in 1:55 on TM set to 1.0 incline; first 12.5 Miles in 83 minutes (6:40 pace with a fast half-mile to close it out) and last 4 Miles in 32 minutes.

So, it's the appropriate time for a self-assessment.  I ran lots of aerobic miles this week, and today, the first 9.5-10 Miles at MP felt pretty good. It was pretty tough from that point foward, though.  Even the easy miles at 8:00 pace felt like work.  But I take solace in the fact that the high mileage, draining as it is, will pay dividends this fall.

Nice work Wesley. The thing about an aerobic build up -to truly get its full benefit at least in my experience, is to lay off the anaerobic effort because it will be counter productive to the purpose of the aerobic running - capillarization and mitochondria creation. Anaerobic efforts introduce acidosis which stunts those processes. If you felt like the "easy" miles were "work" - then you may want to consider several days of aerobic running with a few very easy regenerative efforts - that'll reset the blood ph and put you back on course. Just a thought...

17 Miles in 2:17 in triple digit heat in Malvern.

After my paternal grandmother's funeral in Malvern, I joined my extended family for a huge meal at my Granddad's house; meal included about half of a coconut pie, which was so good...

After visiting for a couple of hours, I fought off a nap and opted for a long run in some smokin' heat. Ran 8.5 Miles to my maternal grandfather's house on the outskirts of Malvern. This is my Mom's father, and though surprised to see me, he greeted me with homemade lemonade and Arkansas spring water. After cooling off with my very cool Granddaddy, who invited me to go dancing with him tonight, I ran another 8.5 Miles back into Malvern, passed my grandmother's cemetery, and back to my Granddad's house.

Great dinner of leftovers while discussing politics with the few remaining family members who hung around.

I'm tired.

Not exactly. Several members of my family are walking Fox News talk points. I have trouble controlling my utter disgust with their lack of empathy or concern for the large chunk of the human race who is (1) less fortunate than them, despite (2) having the unfortunate luck of being born into conditions making success and achievement of the "American Dream" far less likely. I'm equally disappointed in their apparent inability (or lack of desire) to think for themselves.

One mile warm-up followed by 4X800m Repeats at 2:55/repeat (give or take a couple of seconds); very low energy this afternoon despite a day off yesterday, AND I got a bad side stitch after the fourrh repeat! Jogged a couple of miles really easy before resuming my workout with 2 more Repeats at 3:00/repeat.

Including the half-mile recovery jogs, I ran 7.5 Total Miles.

I find, and have found with the runners I coach, that a hard interval workout after a day off is a challenge. Best to do some easy miles and some fast striders and then the intervals the next day.

From Wesley Hunt on Tue, Sep 25, 2012 at 08:24:26 from 198.8.4.10

As usual, this is great advice, Rob. I was very tight, and I didn't do myself any favors doing intervals...in the afternoon...on 4 hours of sleep.

I recalibrated my legs with a medium-long aerobic run this morning. Great weather here in the mornings these days.

Empire, Mighigan, 41 degrees, intermittent hail.

One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

The inaugural Sleeping Bear Marathon featured an out-and-back course along the scenic drive overlooking Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, which I will be climbing this afternoon with my fiance, Diana, who has been an amazing tour guide all weekend.

I ran with the pace cyclist from start to finish, and we very much enjoyed ourselves.  My time of 2:45:42 bests my previous PR (March 2012 LR Marathon) by over 6 minutes.  Of course, it being the inaugural race, I now hold the course record (at least for a year)!

As I lay in the Empire B&B eating chex mix and drinking a Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat, I am relaxed and perfectly content.

A good morning, and a great afternoon to come.

21 Miles with Dave on a beautiful day along the Arkansas River.

Our run took us west on the River Trail through Burns Park and over the Big Dam Bridge to Little Rock, where we continued west for two miles before turning around at the Two Rivers Bridge parking lot.

Because of 20-25 gusts of wind in our face, we averaged 8:12/mile for the first 10 Miles; after turning around, with the wind gods at our back, we ran in the 7:30 - 7:50 pace range.  We tacked on an additional mile through downtown North Little Rock and back over the Junction Bridge into the River Market for no other reason than because we were feeling good and enjoying ourselves.  Including the half-mile trot to and from my aprtment, I decided to take credit for 22 Miles today.

Dave's ready to smash his PR and qualify for Boston at the St. Jude's Memphis Marathon the first weekend of December.  And he still has 6 weeks to fine tune his fitness and race strategy!

I like to think that I can self-motivate through my pure love of running, but since my last race, I've struggled to enjoy a single mile.  And that race was a PR!  I love to train, the discipline that it entails, the goal always in sight, but I cannot always train...particularly since I do not LOVE racing.

Thanks, Bec. Good luck to your and your husband with the move...running nowhere is sometimes the best place to go. Get off the base and go for it.

Rob-The thing about pole barns is that the wooden beams supporting the tin roof are the perfect height for pull-ups.

The thing about beer is that it's good.

Merry Christmas, Rob. Have a great one, brother.

Just check weather.com.

A workout on Christmas? My only running streak is that I've run every single Christmas day since 1979. But never mile repeats!

I love the Christmas run though. It's like your the only person alive.
