Went up to Eden to run this beautiful race.  Very cold it was! (Yoda) and I ran in a singlet and shorts! It was about 30 something at the start and When I started the race I felt like I could stick with Logan and company but I backed off because I knew I couldnt finish a race the way those guys start out.  I warmed up quick and then the canyon headwind started. It wasnt too bad at first but after we got out of the canyon and onto the flat land up there, I was wishing someone would pass me so I could get a break.  I ended up running all by my self the whole way which doesnt bother me at all because I like to try to concentrate on myself without the distractions.  I felt really good and had a plan to try to pick my pace up at mile 9 but by the time I got there the wind and a bit of incline kept me from trying to have a strong finish. After I finished I was astounded to find out that Dark Horse came in behind me. I didnt even stop my watch or look at the time when I came in so Im guessing my time to be in the 1:15 range again.  Ill have to see when its posted.  By the way Steve Ashbaker ran off the course thats why I was ahead of him.  I had a moment for a couple of seconds till I found that out!  Still let this race be known as the race I beat Steve Ashbaker.  Sorry Steve, just let me have my glory till next race okay?  Also that stupid chip card you put on your shoes rubbed the top of my toes till they bled. I asked someone at the second aid station if they would cut it off but they didnt have anything.  I stopped for a couple of seconds to try and rip it off but it started to crack so I grimmaced and bore it!  I wanted to run with team St. George/Fast Running Blog after but I had to get my Taxes done today so dont think im snubbing you alright?  My next race is Boston and after today Ive got a bit more confidence to try for a 2:35.  We will see! By the way my number for Boston is 1234 if anyone wants to track me on the 21st.

Way to go Walter - great race. Boston is going to be super for you. By the way that might have been my number for Boston last year (or something very close, I'll have to look and see)!

From Walter on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 12:46:47

Hey Dave, you'll have to let me know if that was your number. It may just be a lucky number huh? Be glad you didnt come up for this cold weather run! I could tell Clyde and mik'l were definately out of their element!

From Adam RW on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 13:09:05

Walter, way to race and on your own. Sorry about the timing card rubbing your foot raw just get some antibiotics and Vaseline on it so it will be 100% for your real race in a couple weeks.

Walt, It's ok I'm just embarassed that I did that. Nice to meet your wife today and hope to see you at Ogden?

From Steve Hooper on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 14:25:37

Great Race Walter! I'm really excited for you. You're having a great year. Keep it up and good luck at Boston.

From Cody on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 15:11:01

Walter!

Man I continue to be impressed with your racing. You are looking good and still improving. You will do great at Boston. I will be watching/cheering....

From James on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 16:39:03

Good race again! Hopefully I can get back to running with you guys in the near future.

From Superfly on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 19:30:11

Good race Walter. Your going to tear it up in Boston. You've had great races all year and it's looking better all the time.

From Chad on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 22:39:58

I had a great race watching you from behind the whole race today. You were in the 'zone' as near as I could tell. A zone that I couldn't quite catch up with.

From Mik'L on Sat, Apr 05, 2008 at 22:53:39

Great job today. Clyde and I were talking about how well you have been racing this year. Keep it up! Good luck at Boston. I will have to follow you while I'm at work...it will be the first time in two years that I haven't been there! Good to see you again.

BTW, it was so cute when your daughter ran up to you after the race! I wish I would have had that on tape.

Great race, especially running solo for so long in the wind! Great tuneup for Boston!

From Walter on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 10:04:37

Steve Ashbaker-- I did a race down in st. george and I was right behind Steve Olsen and went off the course on a round a bout turn and lost 3 minutes and it sucked! You still did great on that race. Im so impressed with you and sasha's performances. It gives me hope.

Steve Hooper--Thanks for the encouragement! It was good to see some warm runners battling out the cold with us!

Cody--Your running is just as good as mine! I wish I could have finnished without that crappy headwind! Didnt the last turn to the finish feel like a million bucks, with that wind finally pushing you!?

James-- I thought for sure Id see you up there! How are you doing? Did you race this weekend

From Jon on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 10:10:43

Walter, buddy, you choose a heck of a hard day to finally beat me! Nice job- I think that is an amazing time given the conditions!

You'll do great at Boston. Just start out slow at it, though- the second half is tougher than the first, and it's a lot funner to be passing people at the end!

Your training is really paying off. Are you doing the 30k, too?

From Walter on Sun, Apr 06, 2008 at 10:40:32

Clyde-- I was glad to see you up there gutting it out with us snow runners. What a heck of a wind huh?

Chad--I am just as amazed of your running as you are of mine. You have come a long way since Ive known you.

Mik'l-- I was surprised to see your tan butt up there in siberia! You people make me sick!! just kidding you dont. I had to bribe my kids yesterday because I made them wait for hours the week before when I did the Timp Triathlon. They are definately my support team.

Jeff--I hope boston doesnt have a headwind. I would rather it rain! oops I didnt say that! I hope the weather doesnt read this blog!

Jon-- I did finally get to put a W notch on my Jon vs. Walter wall of shame. If thats what it takes jon then I think ive worked out my strategy against you! jk let me know your next race and Ill see how you feel closer to it before I decide to run. Ha ha As far as I know Im not sure about the 30k. Ill be coming back on Wednesday night and Ill just have to play it by ear.
