Ok ok Im finally home and now I can explain my marathon to my fellow friends.  First of all, I remember last time Id run this marathon, there were very few porta potties along the way so I thought since it was a very cold morning that Id get away with not drinking anything before the start. I had a banana in the morning and that was it.  I started out feeling very good despite all the site seeing I had done on sat and sunday.  I actually should not have climbed the bunker hill stairs before because my calve muscles tightened up mega bad on sunday. I dont know why i had decided to do that at the time. I had to use my stick all night to work the knot i had in them. But while I was running in the race I felt really good and I knew not to push the pace like everyone around me was doing.  I felt like I kept myself back and my times were fairly decent and at mile 9 there was a little incline and about half way up it my right calve muscle tightened up like it was the last 3 miles of the race!  I thought that maybe i wasnt getting enough sodium intake and so at the next water stop I drank gatorade and after a mile or so my muscle stopped spasming and I felt good again. I got past the wellesley girls and up to then i was only doing gatorade at the stops. The sun was barining down pretty hard at that point and I felt myself sweating alot. There was a brisk head wind that was cool also so I think thats what gave me a sense of feeling alright.  I had to go to the bathroom at mile 14 or somewhere and there was one portapotti at the mile marker and someone was in it. I felt like I was going to lose my bladder so I went behind the porta potti  in the brush and while i was going a cop came over to me and disqualified me!  He tried ripping my number off my jersey and  I wouldnt let him so he wrote my number down and told me to quit.  I showed him that there were several other runners doing the same and when he turned around he went over to them and wrote their numbers down as well.  I didnt know what to do I was just standing there and a bystander told me to just run. So I ran and I heard the cop faintly telling me to come back.   I figured I would probably be yanked out of the race at some point after that and my whole experiance turned sour.  I started tightening up bad and realized I was dehhydrated.  I drank two cups of gatorade at a full stop and 1 cup of water.  my gut was slusshing the fluid around and I was screwed  and I think I was at the 19 mile mark at that point.  I tried to focus on one mile at a time and it was sooo hard.  My whole demeanor had changed and I got depressed. the crowd was freakin amazing and at that point I had a goal to just beat lance and I finished a couple of minutes before him.  I tried to walk after I crossed the finish and couldnt.  I was taken to the med tent and I had lost 8 pounds which for me was alot! they put an i v in my arm because I was going in and out of it. they put ice on my calves and it hurt but I know it helped.  Its the worst pain my body has been in since I got hit by a car and thats not kidding!  I can feel bone on bone in my knee and my I T band has been telling me what a jerk I was for neglecting it.  I will put this on my favorite spectator marathons, but my worst marathon after feeling like I was in a 2.30 zone from training so hard. Im upset, but happy to have done it at the same time! Its that after marathon feeling everyone goes through.  Im going to see if my knee gets better in a few days before I try even walking on it. I hope this wasnt too depressing for you all!

Walter-Let me be the first to say NO WAY! That is so ridiculous. I'm so glad you didn't just stop because that guy is an idiot. There is no way they will really disqualify you. Way to keep going and still beat Lance! I hope you still had a good trip!

From James on Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 23:24:15

Wow! That is quite the report and experience! You ran well through that first half. I heard you should just go do Boston for the experience, and if you race well it is a plus.

From Lybi on Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 23:26:44

Finally! I've been waiting for this race report and it was worth it. What a crazy marathon experience! If they don't have enough port a potties they just can't go around arresting people for using a bush. That guy must've been a real tight wad. Calf cramps, dehydration, fatigue--what a whopper. How can YOU loose 8 lbs.? Must've been all blood volume. Yikes! Great job beating Lance and persevering under those conditions! Hope you heal up quickly.

From Tracy1 on Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 23:33:26

Wow Walter! Despite all that you still did very well, that would be so hard!! Its not an easy marathon, is it...! Rest up and get well! Glad Lance kept you motivated-Yeah!!

From Cody on Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 23:36:26

Walter!

You survived! What an experience you had! I am sure you will remember this and get that shiver down the spine while recollecting the experience. Crazy. Live and learn. Chalk this up as what not to do during a marathon. #1 Don't pee next to a cop.

Get well and take it easy! No races for you until Ogden at the earliest!

From Jon on Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 23:41:18

I've been waiting every day for this report, and it didn't disappoint. Mean cops, outdoor pee stops, extreme dehydration, calf cramps, IT band and knee pain- wow, that all explains how your time slowed down so much. You still have your training behind you, so do a gradual build back and you will be fine for summer racing!

Are you doing the 30k or Ogden marathon?

From Jon on Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 23:51:35

Walter- would you say your slowdown the last 10k was due to hitting the wall, dehydration, or stress from the cop? Or cramping? Or some combination?

From Superfly on Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 10:33:09

Walt- Oh man I read this last night with my wife and didn't have time to respond... but now I just don't know what to say. Unbelievable! That's the first word that comes to my mind. Cops are such jerks most the time. Hopefully you had a good trip after the fact.

From KC on Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 11:45:14

Walter thanks for the comments. The race is always fun to watch but I can only imagine what a rush it must be to run it and complete it. Congrats on a good run!!!! I can't believe the cop was going to pull your bib!!! That's nuts! Maybe I will see you in the race next year. I won't be up front with you but I will try to get a number. Hope your knee feels better.. Oh, and yes we have some crazy fans around here we love our sports:)

From Craig on Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 13:27:24

Walter- man, that sucks. It is weird that you had such a bad race and I had such a good race, yet you still came in a minute before me. Was it just me, or did they say your name at the start? Was the guy with the gun named "Walter Brown"?

From Walter on Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 15:29:59

Mik'l--I was going to be arrested I guess from what he told me so who knows? maybe Ill get one of those appear in court tickets in the mail! I wont be able to show my face around boston again! lol

James--Thanks for the comments. I had fun out there.

Lybi-- my finish weight was 126! I weighed 134 at the start. I have never lost that much weight in a 3 hour period before. I was shredded!

Tracy1-- Thanks, it was a blast there.

Cody-- Man I should have looked around before I peed! That cop was a real winner! If there wasnt a thousand people around to distract him I would be in the clink right now!

Jon-- Im not trying to make excuses for my horrible last 10k it just wasnt my day! I actually kept hearing your voice in my head at the half way point saying, not yet, wait for the last 10k. The back of my knee is not good! Ive been limping since monday. I may go call dr. toronto and see if he can squeeze me in. He'll just tell me not to run! Are you kiddin me?

Clyde-- My pshychy was shot after I stopped on my pee break. I dont know if youve ever seen the tour de france but those cyclists always are getting the camera on them and you can see them do a pee break off the side of the road! I wasnt peeing in someones front yard! It was the brush from the woods!

KC--I had an unbelievable fun time there from friday to yesterday. I saw a ton of stuff and yes spent a ton of money. I did go to the sox game when they beat the angels in the 8th inning! Very fun! I will consider the marathon next year because now I have to punish that course like it punished me!

Craig-- I did hear my name at the starting line also! I think theres a wealthy guy named Walter Brown from there that is popular with some theory he has if you type in walter brown on google, he always comes up. You may even find me on the google search, but not from my money, just good looks!

From MarcieJ on Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 21:17:57

My friends all climbed those stairs the day before (I was the smart one of the group opted to wait at the bottam) but they were all feeling it during the race and regretted their decision. And oh my goodness that is quite the race experience. I cant believe the cop tried to rip your number off, thats crazy! Hope that knee gets better!

From Walter on Fri, Apr 25, 2008 at 00:06:28

Thanks marcie! I wish you were near me to coax me into not running up those stairs. My three girls, sarah, brookie, and bailey all ran up them and it was hard. 300 steps going in circles! I wonder what the fastest time up that is? They should do a competition! As for the cop, I guess i was in the wrong but you almost feel like you should be catered to a bit more. at the starting line there was a ton of people peeing in the road!

From josse on Fri, Apr 25, 2008 at 19:19:02

Man I will never pee in the bushes again. Wait I'm a girl and we have to squat so no one usuall see us. Man sorry about the bad experience. I hope you can go again and have a much better one.

From Walter on Fri, Apr 25, 2008 at 19:29:28

I dont know if youve done moab, but its even worse at the start there because they make you walk to the start and there are absolutely no portapottis there. I went up a hill behind a rock and while i was doing my business, a girl came over by me and squatted right next to me. I just laughed it off but what do you do? just hope you dont see them again i guess. Hey your the urinator i saw at the start! I will go to boston again and conquer!

From jtshad on Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 09:56:54

What a report and what an experience. Sorry to hear that a bozo kinda ruined your Boston experience and you had such bad problems during the race. You are a talented runner and will bounce back for your next race.

So obviously you did not get disqualified...what a blowhard. This is why I kinda like the smaller races better, no crowds means not as much need for portapotties (just a bush or two).

From Walter on Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 10:16:14

I know Jeff! Now I have another marathon that i have to conquer! Carlsbad, Deseret news, and Boston. all b word marathons! Im still planning on Ogden but my strategy will deffinately be differant for that race! How you feeling? I love that picture you have on your blog with that lighthouse style tower behind you. where is that?

From MichelleL on Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 11:28:38

So sorry you didn't do as well as you could have, but I think you hung in pretty tough given the circumstances. Any time you end up in the medic tent you know you've given what you had to give! So do you know if you are in the results? (Whether you were actually disqualified?)

From Adam RW on Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 11:47:07

Oh man!!! I don't know what else to say. That is a great report about a crazy race. Way to stick it out and I hope that the calf is fully recovered.

From Walter on Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 17:07:04

Thanks michelleL! No they didnt disqualify me as of yet. My overall place was 428 and it didnt have an asterick by it saying I used enhancement drugs or urinated in public!

From Walter on Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 17:11:14

Yeah thanks adam. I actually did a stretch session with a sports therapist today. She told me to try to track my acidic vs. alkaline diet. My calves will be better at the end of a marathon if I take in more vegtables and fruit. I told her how I didnt drink anything before the race. Big mistake!

From dave holt on Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 22:35:12

Walter - that is just flat out insane! Sorry things didn't work out perfect. It just takes that one thing to throw you off and a whole marathon can go sour after it. You'll hit an awesome one coming up. You are in 2:30 shape!

From Walter on Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 10:58:07

Its amazing how much the last 10k of a marathon is mental and how easy it is to get down on yourself. I have to break 2:40 in ogden.

From jtshad on Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 09:51:05

Don't let this race get you down for Ogden, just chalk it up to a bad race. Look forward to seeing you in Ogden!

BTW, my pic is from the Shamrock Sportsfest marathon in Virginia Beach, VA.
