Went to the Olympic Oval this morning right at 5:30 and did my very boring but not as boring as a treadmill run! I ran 26 laps which equals near 7.25  miles. Each lap is 480 yards long or maybe its 440 yards. I know its 40 yards longer than a normal track. So 10 laps is adding an extra .25 mile or something like that. Its confusing but so is my thinking.

That would make it 440 if it takes 10 laps to add an extra 1/4. I think the regular track is 400. Or is a regular track 440 and you add the extra 40 for that one? I don't know. It is 40 yards more regardless.

From walter on Wed, Jan 07, 2009 at 11:04:28

Yeah Im pretty sure that they told me its 10 yards per turn more and the straight parts are 10 yards more. Its confusing when you want to do interval running because you have to start 40 yards ahead per lap. Did I just get more confusing?

From Kelli on Wed, Jan 07, 2009 at 15:04:56

We figured 3 laps was .99 of a mile based on what they told us. (.33 for every lap) How far off is that?

From walter on Wed, Jan 07, 2009 at 15:10:41

That sounds like too much Kelli. I dont think its that far, but who knows, could be wrong. I know if you run a quarter mile you have to start on the first turn which was about 40 yards when I paced it. Ill have to ask them because if you think about it each lane is several yards more so the outside lane could be .33 per lap. If thats the case I ran alot further than 7.25 this morning.

That's why I don't run at the Oval. I can't figure out how it all works. I need simplicity.

From walter on Wed, Jan 07, 2009 at 22:32:00

Ill find out what the heck the distance is. I know at one point last year they had tape marks where you would start the 400, the 800 and 1200 and mile. The mile start was clear on the other side of the track about right in the middle where the zamboni comes in and out. Is that more simple for you Cheryl? haha
