Not sure of my official time -- it never did show up on the computer.

Good character building stuff!!!! I think that is the best way to describe this race for me. Didn't do nearly as well as I thought I would have, but a great reality check! :) I have a list of what possibly went wrong, but they are just excuses. :) :) :)

I ran the race almost exactly as I planned through mile 20. Ran the tangents, felt strong. :) In fact, I distinctly remember virtually patting myself on the back at mile 20 telling myself how  incredibly awesome I was and that I had 3:27 in the bag and just might hit 3:25!!! OH HOW PRIDE PRECEDES THE FALL!!! Seriously within a couple of minutes of congratulating myself on my incredible fitness everything fell apart. I suddenly felt weak and exhausted. I decided to slow down a bit to re-energize but no matter what I did the feeling got worse and worse. At mile 23 I gave myself a good pep talk and was determined to reverse this trend. I knew if I could just gut it out for a few more miles that I could still hit 3:27. I gave it everything I had and ran that mile exactly at planned pace. After that the wheels completely came off. I lost a minute on mile 24, another on mile 25, another on mile 26 and then another with the course being long. I WAS SO MAD AND FRUSTRATED. I pointlessly tried to surge (my mind would attack but my body would not respond) as I watched 3 women pass me in the last mile. Very discouraging. Solid effort, just fell short.

BEST parts:

Hanging out with friends (esp. my SSF) before and after.

Feeling extremely cool to know so many elite runners and wishing them luck at the start! (I was worried about how Fritz would do after I saw the crazy huge deck burns on his leg ... but now I think he should pull a stunt like that before every race!!! WOW!!!!)

Meeting blogger friends that I had not met before :)

Misc. info for myself:

*don't get cocky

*3 gus might not be enough

*consider walking through aid stations to get more fluid

*re-evaluate training plan/schedule -- determine best plan for running while in PT school

*make nutrition and sleep more of a priority

*don't compare myself to others, just do my best and be okay with that :) :) :)

Your post sounds like a lot of ours from yesterday. Not a bad day, but something wasn't quite right - except for Fritz of course!I was 90% sure I was going to DNF at around 15 miles.

True all that stuff you wrote at the end. You learn something from every marathon.

What a crazy race! I'm sorry things didn't go quite as planned those last few miles, but I think you are good about looking at what you DID do and how amazing those first 20 felt and went. Conquering the marathon beast is a difficult thing. I always wonder if my body will ever get used to those miles and begin to understand and respond during them. Thanks for helping ME out so much this race! You are amazing.

Your training was great and you executed your race plan perfectly. You should be proud of how hard you battled at the end. Your misc. notes to self are very good. Other than the cocky part. There is a difference between being cocky and confident.

Teena, Ogden is not an easy course and I think you did awesome. I have heard a lot of stories about the wheels coming off during the race, so you deserve a pat on the back. I'm proud of you for sticking through to the end and trying to turn bad thoughts into positive thoughts. I also don't think you are or were cocky. Cocky people don't doubt their ability, and leading up to the race you had doubts. I am bummed out that I didn't get to see any of you finish.

Way to tough it out Teena. When I hit tough spot in a race I just think back to the 5 or 10 races where I know I felt a lot worse. Without those tough races what could we rely on to push us through? :) Now you have a good one in your back pocket.

I think my deck burns really helped out. Just not sure how I could replicate them for every race without seriously injuring myself.

I wish your entire race had gone as planned. Still, your performance is fantastic. I think you may be right...3 gus is not enough. You likely burned 3000 calories during the marathon, so replacing only 300 would leave you a little short at the end.

Sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I am doing. Is it better to run by feel? By plan? Train with a schedule? Train without a schedule? More miles, less intensity? Less miles, more intensity? All of these questions flooding my brain right now!!! YIKES!!! :)

I know you said yesterday that you can't use the PT school as an excuse for being tired and a bit unprepared for this race but I do think that the demands and stress of it all definetly have taken there toll whether you want to admit or not! I mean you are super woman but sometimes even super woman gets tired!!! You still kicked some major butt on that marathon Teen! Beat your course PR by 8 minutes!!! You will beat your overall PR before you know it!

You are awesome so don't linger on this one for too long! PR or not it was a succesful day of marthoning!!!

I think that a 3:31 is supburb! Way to go. I don't know much about marathoning at all (remember I've just run the one), but I do know that even I started to feel like those last few miles were a death march. They are hard and anybody that says that aren't is full of it. Your time is so great and your fitness is obvious. No worries Teena girl. :) what is next for you in regards to racing? I know you're in school so it's going to be tricky. I can't wait to meet you sometime.

We came in at about the same time!! Great race, It is funny how 3 minutes means a world of difference, when it comes down to it you ran a great race. You're race sounds a lot like my Ogden last year. I totally fell apart at mile 20 just when I thought I was going to do better than expected. You just never know if your body is going to hold together for you!

Seriously? Is that what you take? I really really really want to know. I hate gus but they are so convenient. I actually dropped one of mine during the race and so had to choke down some raspberry gel they were handing out. But I LOVE gummy bears!!! Especially the red and white ones. :)

I thought about you when I was trying to fight the demons. I tried to imagine myself eating a big snickers bar. Sadly, I don't think the virtual snickers has the same effect as the actual one! ;)

Teena, you did great! Wish I could have been there to see you finish. When you went by Marcie and me at the start I thought you were going fast enough to win the thing outright!!!!! I'm surly glad this was just a tune up marathon for the Utah Valley Marathon for you. You're really going to kick butt there?

The Ogden can be a very brutal and deceptive run especially with all that severe down hill running, much worse than St. George. Just chalk the day up to a great days training and get ready to BQ at UVM.......Congrats on a 3:31:xx on a hot day at the "Ogden"....

I think I ran your race in '07. The end of Ogden can be a grind. But you know what? If you plug Ogden's 3:31:06 into Sasha's race calculator, it gives 3:20:57 for St. George! Time to start training for that sub 3:20! :)
