4 miles

So ... long story sorta short:

SGM: I had a really good first half (much better than I expected) and then around the halfway mark the pain in my left leg began to intensify significantly. I had been dealing with pain there for quite some time and had just figured that the meds had worn off and that I was running harder than normally. After that, the rest of the marathon pretty much stunk!

I took a week off, and then began adding short runs in. I was happy because I was running all of them without any meds and the pain seemed to be lessening. My only concern was what I thought was a ganglion cyst that I thought needed to be drained.

Today I went to see the doctor to see if he could drain it. He had me run 4 miles to see if we could aggravate the cyst enough to really make it stand out so that when he poked it he could be spot on. I ran, the cyst acted up, but as the doctor was palpating the area he pushed on a spot on my tibia that put me through the roof! He put the needle down and said we needed to do a set of x-rays. Result: stress fracture. :( :( :(

Positive side: it isn't that big and unlike many tibial stress fractures it is not horizontal, but mostly vertical (which is good since fractures that stay out in the cortex area and don't penetrate the core of the bone heal much quicker). It looks almost like when you shred a small portion of the outside of a twig a bit. Know what I mean? Sigh. It is already in the healing process and if I am a good girl it should hypothetically heal somewhere between 2-4 weeks from now.

Anyway, enough said.

Peace! :)

Dang!!! I'm sorry, Teena. Well, now you can rest for a while.

From Tom Slick on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 21:26:10 from 69.171.160.194

sounds like you've got it under control, do the right things and you'll be back afterr it in no time.

Dale~

I am not going to run, but I am not going to rest!!! :) :) :) How are you doing?

Slick~

Yep, under control with plenty of time to train for a killer Boston. Hey, speaking of Boston, when is the best time to purchase airline tickets? Have you purchased yours yet?

From DaleG on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 22:00:08 from 70.0.38.137

I am doing pretty good, thanks for asking.

From DaleG on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 at 23:56:51 from 70.0.38.137

I read your update. Is this the injury you got during the Spartan Race?

From Teena Marie on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 00:33:14 from 174.27.200.245

Dale~

Glad you are doing well!! :)

Yes. Although I remember have minor pains a few days before as well.

From RAD on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 00:51:36 from 98.202.23.178

oh Teena, I have no idea what to say. Sounds like things are going in the right direction though and that you are going to be good and smart - again :(

My love to you as you tackle this one. I know you are concentrating more on school, but when you CANT run - well, it usually makes us a little perturbed. Happy Healing and keep us updated on life and x-training!! We all need to know the best kind for when we inevitably end up in your footsteps :)

From DaleG on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 00:55:06 from 152.216.11.5

Teena, I know you will not be like me and sit on your butt while the stress fracture heals. That was a huge mistake on my part. Now I'm way out of shape and it's not coming back easily.

From Tom on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 11:57:45 from 137.65.56.2

Sorry to hear about the SF. Hope the recovery is quick and you can get all healed up.

BTW it was great to have your in-laws stay at our place for the S-Games. Hope they had a great stay and a great Games! Thanks for steering them our way!

From Kathie on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 18:55:07 from 12.202.17.130

sorry to hear about this new injury Teena. I am sure you will work this one out just like the others. You should be called the queen of healing!

From allie on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 22:10:20 from 24.10.191.18

sorry teena. :( not fun. i'm glad the healing process has already begun though -- and good news that the healing time is pretty short. i know you will be good to it and hopefully you will be back on track soon. take care.

Rachel~

No need to say anything. :) It is what it is. :)

Dale~

It'll come back! Just keep at it. :)

Tom~

My in-laws LOVED your place!!! They couldn't say enough wonderful things about it!!! :) :) :)

Kathie~

Hopefully I will soon be disciplined enough not to get injured so often. :)

Allie~

Thank you for the kind words. I have thought about you a lot lately. Where exactly was your stress fracture in your tibia? How are you feeling now? :)

From allie on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 23:23:15 from 24.10.191.18

my SF was on my lower left tibia, about 2 inches above my ankle bone on the inside of my leg -- i don't know the fancy PT terminology :)

when i first went in for an x-ray the doc said that it was already healing -- and the bone made TONS of progress in the first two weeks while i was on crutches. i went from not being able to put weight on it to jogging 20-30 minutes in just three weeks. the doctor said the fracture was "low risk" so i could run while it healed with the proper equipment (air cast, compression sleeve, goggles). the scariest part about resuming running was the risk of a re-fracture. i felt a slight pain/twinge on that leg all the way up to top of utah. it always made me nervous, but i was pretty convinced it was fully healed because i could hop on it and press on it without feeling any pain. when it was still broken i would have laughed if you told me to hop, and pressing on it caused the worst pain ever (that deep bone pain that put you through the rough). this new pain was different -- it felt like something was "tugging" on the bone, but it wasn't something that was actually painful to run on. it was mostly just naggy and annoying, and it weighed on my mind a lot because i was trying to get ready for a marathon. in hindsight i had nothing to worry about, but obviously it's something that you have to be careful with. i was lucky that it was minor and healed so quickly, and i will say the air cast worked WONDERS. i also wore compression sleeves for about 4-5 weeks after that. now i can press where the fracture was and there is a nice hard bump there -- it's a super bone!! :)

Thanks for the quick response, Allie! :)

That gives me MUCH hope!!! I REALLY appreciate it!! :) :) :)

Oh, THAT stress fracture...:( :( I guess I didn't realize what you were talking about. Oh my gosh! Why do there have to be injuries! You are doing all the right things and you are kicking some swimming trash!! Can't wait till you are all healed up so we can run again. :)

From Lily on Sat, Oct 22, 2011 at 16:58:59 from 67.199.178.210

Teena I am so sorry. But I like what Allie has to say. It can turn into a super bone. I hope so! Eat your greek yogurt and drink your milk :)

Oh SSF!!! I can't believe this! You ran SGM with a stress fracture?!!! You are too tough for your own good.

I am so so so so so so sorry! I feel like I've abandoned you in your hour of needs. What can I do to help? More yogurt? muscle mile? movie night? massage? calcium rich OJ? anything at all? :) :) :)

From Teena Marie on Tue, Oct 25, 2011 at 22:51:01 from 174.27.200.245

SSF~

You did NOT abandon me!!! :) :) :) I am doing great so NO worries!!! :) :) :)

I ran SGM fully realizing that I was taking a pretty big risk. My eyes were wide open. :)

I am enjoying the swimming and look forward to coming back strong and healthy. :)

Yes SSF! You will be back soon running stronger, healthier and smarter than ever! I am glad you're able to find time to swim. You are an excellent swimmer. Love you! : :) :)

From fly on the Wall on Wed, Oct 26, 2011 at 12:09:22 from 204.113.19.47

Bummer. But you're on the road to recovery. That's much better than the road to nowhere. Perhaps this is empathy training for PT?

Was the "ganglion cyst" swelling from the stress fracture? Or did you have both? I've had a ganglion cyst in my wrist for ~30 years. It is tender and annoying but it doesn't hurt enough to go get it drained. I've also had 6 broken bones (that I know of). Unlike the cyst, they all healed.

From Teena Marie on Thu, Oct 27, 2011 at 01:33:07 from 174.27.200.245

Fly~

Yep, I am recovering nicely!!! :)

There is still a ganglion cyst. But ... since all the pain is greatly decreasing (as of late) I am guessing that it was not the issue!!! :) :) :)
