Steve you had better run without me tonight. I've got to run right after school, so I have some time to work on the house tonight. I've got to finish tile and painting before Saturday. This remodel has been pretty time consuming. Good thing I am backing down a little this week and next, otherwise I don't know where I would have time to run. I'm planning on Saturday though.

Ran with the guys (Bill, Dave and Clyde, Dustin is still having wart issues) and did the Bloomington loop up to Bloomington hills and back to the convention center.

The pace was pretty solid the whole way, it took me about 2 miles to feel warmed up. I think we kept a 6:30-6:40 pace through Bloomington but, by the time we reached Bingham Rd. hill I lost motivation and Clyde and Dave pulled away. So, being the cheap runner I am, I took a short cut through the Elementary school and was able to gain about 300M from where I was at, putting me about 150M in front of Clyde and Dave (back where I should be :-).

Our pace stayed the same until we got down to the river and I think we dropped it down into the low 6 min mile pace and then the last 1.5 miles I think we were a little below 6 min pace.

Overall it was a pretty good run, It's always fun getting killed by Dave and Clyde.

Steve good run this morning. I think that's as good of a run as I've seen you run in a long time. You really pushed it all the way. I was hangin by a thread down by River Road and could feel you and Holt running away from me so I somehow finished hard. Keep it up and you'll be lookin good come April.

Woke up early and went to the spin class at the spin class at the gym.  I really have been feeling like I need a little more cross training in my work-out schedule. It pretty much kicked my butt.  We were out of the saddle pretty much the whole work-out. Because of the intensity I'm calling it 5 miles on the blog.

After the class I did 5 miles on the treadmill. Then did some weights.

7. 5 on the treadmill. I tried Dave's interval work-out, but I didn't get too far. However, I did have a pretty good work-out - sweat flying all over the place, my poor treadmill needed a good hosing after I was done.

After warming-up for the first 3 miles I decided to start my 5 min/mile intervals. I thought if Dave can do it, I can do it.  Sure enough, I took it up to 5min/ mile pace and felt like I was cruising in place. My first quarter was fine, second quarter was fine, but my third quarter I felt the treadmill handle moving further away, luckily I was able to save myself seconds before flying off the back by jumping to the side rails of the machine. After eating a piece of humble pie I decided to keep it at 5:30 pace and that felt much better.

Was getting ready to head out on a run this morning and remembered I had a massage.  Worked a ton on my lower back, stomach, hips and hams. Looking forward to speed tonight at 5:15 at the Snow Canyon Track.

Had a good speed work-out at the track. 200,400, 800,1200,1200,800,400,and 200. Felt good and smooth. Didn't over push it, a little faster than 5k pace. I forgot my watch so I don't have any times for the day. I expect the splits would have been FASTER if I had a watch.

I think including warm-up, cooldowns total miles of 6.625 to be exact.

Yes, I almost always have it at an incline. The reason is because as I researched the pros and cons of treadmills, I encountered a few people saying the way to combat the lack of wind resistance and the ease of the treamill was to just have it set with some incline.

Wasn't extreamly happy with the speed work-out tonight.  I ended-up getting there late due to getting stuck at the store.  Then Isabel (my little girl) started getting cold, so I decided it was time to go.

I did manage to get 2 mile repeats in with Clyde. 1st mile - 5:17, 2nd mile - 5:20, was thinking about doing another one but by that time Isabell was compalining about the cold. Did a quick cool down and went home.

We just worked a little longer to try and get some things done so I can bail out early today. If Mik'L didn't say- We are going up north and I will be gone on Saturday. I guess I'll try and run with Sasha up there in the cold.

Did you call Runners Corner about the shoes? I'll give you a call later today. We may get up there tonight in time to stop in.

1.5 Warm-up

1. 4:46 - Extreme Down Hill, Thought I would go out with the leaders and hold it as long as I could.

2. 5:48 (10:43)- More Down Hill Plus we turned onto a gravel road and started heading uphill the last 1/2 mile.

3. 6:07 (16:41)- Started to feel the effects of the gravel, uphill and starting off fast.

4. 5:49 (22:30)- Much happier, Back down hill on the Gravel and paved bike trail.

5. 5:43 (28:13)- Felt good, just coasting down the bike trail, starting to get tired of going fast.

6. 6:25 (34:39)- Pretty spent. Started to hear Dustin behind me and thought, "I'm Toast".

6.2 1:17 (35:56)- Dustin Passed me, I started sprinting, I passed him, Then I couldn't hold the sprint and he kicked my toast.

Overall I am really happy with the race. My training hasn't really been too intense and I was able to improve by 3 min from last year. I'm also excited for how well everyone on the Race Team and Club did. I think we are all off to a great start for 2007.

Good job getting out this morning. Sorry I missed you guys Saturday, I've been feeling a little sick. Have you had time to read any of the blogs about the relay race? Any thoughts about putting a team together. I see on the wasatch website they have a division for running stores to compete against each other. I think we could field a pretty good team from St. George. I plan on training quite a bit harder this month.

Hey, I just realized that I meant to buy mid-distance spikes from you, not distance spikes. Do you have any MD spikes that I can exchange the Sauconys for? Also, I'm looking for XC spikes for next year, so if you have those, that could be good.

Met Paul and Bill over at SCHS Track only to discover there was another soccer practice going on.  So, we ran on over to the Middle School and and ran on their paved  1/4 mile track.

1.5 Mile Warm-up.

1st mile - 6:00

2st mile - 6:00

3rd mile - 6:19 ( got pricker in shoes and had to stop and pull it out)

4th mile - 6:22

The workout wasn't extremely fast, however I wasn't sore this morning and wasn't fatigued after as well. We started off wanting to run 6's for the first three and 6:40 for the 4th.  I think I'm finally starting to get a sense of pace and being able to choose a pace and keep it there.

After the repeats we ran about 600M barefoot.

I soon remembered I hadn't had any food or water since before our repeats last night - not too smart. However, when I got home I did put myself on the scale and I was down to 164 (a new low since 2001).

Sasha, my healthy college weight was 154 if I went below 152 I remember starting to feel weak. When I hit my PR in the mile at 16 in high school I was 163.

I think I currently have a significant muscle density discrepancy compared to my college fitness level. I think my overall muscle balance and tone was much better than it is now.

I was 146 last night when I got home from my run, then 149 this morning. I want to be down to at least 140 at some point this summer.

...and you got me thinking. it really is sad how expensive massage is, especially for runners who really need it. jared's going to kill me (IF he finds out;) but for any runners referred by you, i'll bring my table to their house for $40. so if you hand out any more of my cards, tell them to call my cell #. i've had a lot of people ask me to do that anyway, but never thought seriously about it until we were talking about it. i just know how vital massage is for runners- they are my favorite clients & i want to make it more available for them.

Ran the Run 4 Kids - Pretty happy with the results, mostly happy I'm not sore this morning. I'm not sure what my splits are because I haven't had a chance to take them off my Garmin.  They are pretty close to Dustin Ence's splits except for the last three mile.

I wanted to start the race off a little slower than I have the last couple races and control my pace a little.  I've been getting to the end and finding myself dead and not able to maintain a reasonable pace the last couple miles. I think the strategy payed off, however I think I had a little too much left at the end because I noticed I was sub 5 for the last portion of the race (down hill).

I'm glad we're running another 10k this coming weekend just to get used to racing again, and running at faster speeds.  I also think it will help with my overall strength as well. I would like to get back down to running 10K in the low 5min pace.

Morning Run - Desert Reserve - They fenced me off my favorite access trail into the reserve.  I was pretty ticked.  All for a stupid tortoise I've never even seen and that's not even native to S. Utah.

Ran up to the end of the Paradise Rim Trail.  When I got to my turn-around point a MT. Bike guy pulled up on his $4G bike and started talking to me about how he used to run but stopped because Mt. Biking is faster.  Anyways, to make a long story short I started to head down the trail and he said, to let him go first so he wouldn't "run me down" on the trail. So, I let him go first and just held to his rear tire .5 miles down the trail then passed him.  I must say he was pretty surprised that I was still with him and kicking his butt on the downhill.

Looking Forward to Speed this evening at the Dixie College Track.

Ran with Clyde and "The Girls" at the track this evening. Clyde and I decided to do 10x400M with a 200M recovery. I kept them all at 1:20 or below.  We got a little faster at the end. The last lap was 1:09 for me and 1:04 for Clyde. I really liked the workout, I wouldn't mind doing Sasha's 20x400M on a non-race week.  I think its good training for focusing on form and leg turn-over at higher speeds.

I really didn't do a very good job at updating my blog this week due to time. Sorry about that.

The Hurricane Half ended-up being a pretty good race for me on Sat. I went into it not expecting much, but hoping I would do well. Sounds weird, but I'm sure 90% of you know what I mean. Dustin Ence and I ran most of the race together, until he slowly tapered off and had some MP3 issues on the downhill into LaVirkin. However, another mile or two and he probably would have kicked my toast. To get a play by play on the race, just check out  Dustin's Blog on the Hurricane Half.  The Garmin said 13 miles but I think that's because we cut corners every chance we got.  The actual course is actually pretty accurate I think.

Today (Sunday) I'm feeling pretty tight from the race.

Steve good job today. Push it out the rest of the week and try to hit 60. I may not make it tonight. But let's do a good long run on Saturday morning.

Steve, good to see you feeling a little better. Track is ending and it is time to step up the training, so get feeling better. I need a rejuvination in my running (that means I need a little Steve!).

Steve I'll be there tonight so let's do a fun run. Also if your going to be in town on Sat let's come up with something outside the regular to do for that workout.

See ya tonight

7.5 - ran with Dustin Clyde and Bill down to Worthen Park.  We ran Barefoot on the grass for about 1.5 miles working on form and foot strength. Then headed back to the store. Started feeling pretty tired - probably still recovering from being sick last week.

I hate running sick or injured. Take it easy and don't over do it. Your body will let you know when it's time to pick it up again.

By the way, I really like my sacony triumphs(not sure on the spelling) that you sold me. I feel like I'm running on marsh mellows, a little too heavy to race in. I've been racing in some lighter worn out shoes that I have and I think they gave me shin splint. I should know better. Next time I'm in St. George, I'm going to have to swing by and buy me some 7 oz racing shoes. I've always ran in the shoes I've trained in, but its time to try some lighter shoes for race day.

Clyde and I decided to go and "easy" 20 towards Pine Valley Mt. I was a little reluctant to do twenty with not having built up to it. However, it worked out great. Got pretty depleted at the end and Clyde had to pull me along. Take a look at Clyde's blog for a detail of the run.

Did the black hill loop through Green Valley and back up Main St. to the Diagonal. I was surprised I wasn't sore yesterday and today from Sat.'s 20 miler. I really think taking the protein shake right after the long run help with the recovery and contributed to not being sore.  Also, taking it a little easier on the run helped as well.

I'm hoping to get in an easy 5 tonight in the reserve.

- Didn't end up getting out again. Came home from the store, had dinner and lost all motivation.

Got up and did track work with the morning group. 8x400 at 6 min pace.

Looking forward to more 400 tonight at Dixie College. 7:15 pm for whoever want to go!

Ran 15x400 with a 200M recovery at the Dixie College track tonight with Clyde and Eric. Started off wanting to run 20 but as the workout went along I realized it probably would be smarter to just do 15. I was able to keep all 15 at 1:20 or below. Running with Eric and Clyde really help the workout move along.  I think in a couple weeks I'll feel ready to add 5 more 400's to the workout.

Planning on going to the track this evening and helping Kendra out with her workout. I'll probably get in another 7.

Went over to the Dixie College track with Kendra and helped her with her speed work-out. I was pretty impressed when was able to get one of her quarters down to 6:40 pace. I ended up doing an easy 7 miles with a pace between 6:30 and 7:30.  The last mile I did barefoot on the AstroTurf and track.

Over all I was really happy about the work out. However, I felt like my hip flexors never really loosened up and my hips were twisting/ catching with almost every stride.  I just need to spend some time stretching them out or just get a massage.

Got up and ran an easy 3.5 this morning.  Still feeling some of the effects from yesterday's speed workout.  I hope to get another 1.5 in on the treadmill at the store before our club run tonight.

Didn't end up putting any miles on the treadmill.

Club Run: Dave, Dustin, Clyde and Myself ran from the store at 7pm this evening. Down Sunset to Dixie Dr. over to Sunriver and up, up, up to the top of this "little" mesa. Ran around on the course with a mixture of cement and grass, over toward SHAC and back up Sunset to The St George Running Center.

Take a look at the my mile splits, map, etc. by clicking here. (My garmin got started a mile late and got left on at the end. The run ended at 7.62 on the Garmin which was really 8.62 from the store)

Decent run, I felt pretty good coming back up Sunset. It's always nice to know the run is almost over. Tried focusing on my form most of the run - being relaxed in the shoulders and proper arm swing.

Great run with the club this morning.  Dave Holt, Dustin Ence, Clyde Behunin, Bill Campbell and myself. Started at the old Brentwood Bowling Alley and circled around the Sand Hallow Reservior/ State Park.

Pace was steady and easy the first half then got picked up the last half on the downhill back to the Bowling Alley. Dave H. stopped at the Park entrance to meet his family for a day in the sun while we all hammered ourselves back to the cars. Clyde took on the role as the rabbit while we all chased him down the hill. Steve O. was also looking pretty strong and gained a good 200M on me.

I'm starting to feel a little stronger, however I think I was slightly feeling the effects of increasing my miles this week.  Looking forward to another week of 60-65 miles and continuing to build a more solid mileage base.

Ran from the store to Snow Cayon Prkwy, up Snow Canyon State Park to RT 18 and back down to the store.  I started off pretty dehydrated and had some serious issues until we got to the top of the park and drank some water and sports drink. Bill was nice enough to wait for me at the top.  Finally started to feel better on the way back down to the store.

Over all I'm really happy about the week. I can't remember the last time I put in a 70 mile week.  It's probably been 7 years.

Desert reserve morning run - 7 miles easy.

This evening we met at the St. George Acceleration Ctr. for a lecture on nutrition and training.  We ended up leaving early to get our run in. 8 miles - Bloomington Loop.  After about  2 miles in we picked the pace up a little but, after about 3 miles my Burrito from lunch started trying to get out of my system (if you know what I mean).  So, I pulled off the trail while Clyde watched for people - and I took care of business. After that I felt much better and we just cruised back to the cars.

Great run this morning with Bill, Dave and Steve O. Ran from the Veyo Store down to the running store. Took a while to warm up but once we started going I felt great.  Dave decided he wanted to drop 3 miles at 5:20-5:30 pace and stupid me tried to keep up.  I think it really effected my run the rest of the way.  I've noticed I don't handle speed changes very well in the middle of a long run.  Overall I was really happy with the run and I'm noticing improvements.

Steve good job with the run. Sorry I didn't make it over this morning, I wasn't feeling very good yesterday afternoon and evening, and decided I needed a little more rest and recovery this morning. I think it is a combination of allergies, heat, and some fatigue from my week of training why I haven't been feeling too good. I'm still hoping to get in a run, but now it will have to be this afternoon on the treadmill or tonight after the sun goes down.

7 miles easy this morning from the house down into town and back. Really humid out.

7 miles on the treadmill - evening

Also, I just posted my Bryce Half Splits.

Last Fri I went over to Desert Palms Fitness Center and got my metabolic rate and Vo2Max testing done. I found that my training needs to be a little different than I originally thought. I thought I needed more speed and tempo work - the test told me I needed more time in Zone 1 and 2. Zone 1 for me is between 155-161, Zone 2 between 161-167. Basically it's saying I need to do more base.

I was really surprised that my Vo2Max read at 86.1.  However, it really doesn't mean much if I don't have the right training behind it.  It said my Max HR was 181.  I think that might be a little off - I'm pretty sure I've had it higher than that before.  However, at the time I thought I was going to shoot off the back of the treadmill. I'll have to scan my reports and post them on the blog.

I was really impressed with everyone over at Desert Palms. They really took time to explain the system and the data the test printed out for me to follow. If your interested in doing the test just give me a call at the store.

How did they measure your VO2 max? If it is indeed 86, it means that you run like an elephant, and a really big and clumsy one too. Compared to you, I would be an antelope, if that test was right.

They tested me on the New Leaf System:

http://www.newleaffitness.com/

I'm not sure how you're coming up with the above assumption? Please explain more. . . I'm curious.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 18:40:32

Ed Eyestone was one of the most inefficient runners, and with the VO2 Max of around 85 he ran 13:32 5 K. Right now you are probably around 17:00-17:30 for a 5 K. Your VO2 Max according to the measurement is higher than that of Ed Eyestone. Granted that your running economy right now may not be ideal, but I seriously doubt it is that bad.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 18:46:47

If they did not actually measure the amount of oxygen going in and coming out (you need a special mouth piece for that) while you were running all out, this is only a very rough estimate, which sounds like it is much worse that one could get just from your races and workouts. Your VO2 Max is probably somewhere between 55 and 65.

From Steve Hooper on Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 19:27:16

Well, at first I thought either the test was flawed or I'm running way below my potential. Possibly a mixture of both.

However, After reading a bit on VO2 Testing - I'm beginning to think it's not a perfect indicator of how "elite" a runner/athlete is or the potential.

For example you can't say you have a 76, I have a 86 VO2Max therefore I'm going to be faster than you. There's too many other variables.

I'm planning on getting re-tested in about 6 weeks and see how my metabolic rate has changed. The test was set up with "the mouthpiece" and seemed to follow the protocol for a typical VO2 test.

I keep wondering if it would be better for an athlete who does most of their training off of a treadmill to do be tested out on the track or trail with a mobile system (ie you're still running with the mask, but its attached to the system on a cart or is free and radio transmitts the data).

Do you think you would have performed better out on a track or do you think it wouldn't of made much of a difference? (disregarding the 86 score)

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Aug 01, 2007 at 14:17:11

There is a lot of variation in the marathon performance for the people with the same VO2 Max, but there is much less in a 5 K. I would say for somebody with a VO2 Max of 86 measured while running to be a 17:00 5 K runner is exceptionally unusual, especially if that person runs regularly. If I were you, I would ask them to double-check their equipment.

From James on Wed, Aug 01, 2007 at 14:36:22

I have done a lot of VO2 max testing in the Ex. phys. lab up here at Utah State with Trever Ball. I am pretty sure that some calculations were done wrong, because you would have the highest VO2 max out of any person that I have ever met! Lance Armstrong and Paul Tergat have a VO2 max around 84-85.

You are right about other variables though. For example, Alberto Salazar only had a VO2 max of 71 and was able to run 2:08? in the marathon. Part of the reason was because his Lactate Threshold was extremely high and made up for what he wasn’t able to consume and utilize with oxygen. VO2 max only tells some of the tail. I would guess your VO2 max is probably in the mid 60s though.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Aug 01, 2007 at 14:55:04

James - do you still have access to the lab? If yes, can we have the Fast Running Blog VO2 Max test party sometime?

From Steve Hooper on Wed, Aug 01, 2007 at 18:23:00

Since posting yesterday I've continued to do some reading. I think you guys are right - The test must have been done wrong or the reading somehow got botched. a 86 Vo2 Max is even higher that Ryan Hall. It just wouldn't make sense that I would be that high. 60's would be a little more accurate.

From James on Wed, Aug 01, 2007 at 20:26:48

Sasha,

I do have some access to the lab and it wouldn't be hard to do it this fall. I don't know if Trever is still the lab assistant or not, so I can find out. If someone really wanted to do a V02 max test we could arrange it. I offered it to the guys up here last spring but no one seemed interested. Those tests are not very fun to do, but they are interesting.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Aug 02, 2007 at 14:04:18

James - I'd like to do one next time I am in Logan, which would probably be the day before TOU. 400 meters at VO2 Max should be a nice pre-race stride.

See if you can get the Logan chapter of Fast Running Blog to do it. My predictions: Paul - 68, Cody and Logan - 65, you and Jon - 63, Dan - 60.

From James on Thu, Aug 02, 2007 at 17:42:12

Sasha,

Remind me in a month and I'll see what I can do. You are almost right on with mine (66), but I bet Paul has one a bit higher or his LT is higher than I think it is.

From Cody on Thu, Aug 02, 2007 at 19:08:56

I think James' would be higher than mine. I would predict low 60's for me. Closer to what Jon's would read.

I am curious to how you came up with my prediction Sasha. Should I be faster than I am? Do I run like an elephant too?

From Jon on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 00:16:58

James- when did you offer it to us? I think I would have done it...

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 12:37:49

Cody - your form does look rather inefficient. To back up the visual clues, you struggle with a 32 second 200. Your legs look too powerful to have to struggle to run that if you had decent biomechanical economy. James visually does not appear inefficient. I did wonder, though, why he had to work so hard to run a 76 quarter and a 33 200 in a workout. With his VO2 Max being as high as 66, that now explains it. There is something not so easily seen with a naked eye in his form. With Jon, the way he ran the uphills in Del Sol while still being out of shape aerobically and even a few pounds overweight suggests to me that he is on the efficient side, although still not as efficient as Paul. I anticipate that Paul will be the most efficient of all of you by far. He looks perfect visually, and has very good top speed even though his legs do not appear particularly powerful.

From Cody on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 12:57:23

Very interesting Sasha-

I think you may be on to something. I agree that Paul does has the most efficient form and probably the highest VO2 Max. I do think that Jon may be more efficient as well as he seems to hardly work when we run together.

I feel slow and my 200/400 times prove it. What I wonder is whether its lack of fast twitch muscles or poor form keeping me from running sub 30 seconds on a 200. I would say that it is poor form, but I can't pin-point what it is that is wrong with it. Do you know? Do the Logan guys know? They have run with me lots. One thing I do notice is that even with me in pretty good shape right now, I still seem to be working harder than everyone else (in Logan) during our runs and races. My HR is high, my breathing is heavy, and I feel like I am going to die any second (most of the time). I at first thought it was from lack of fitness, but I dont think that as much anymore and now this form question may answer that.

Thanks Steve for letting us take over your blog....

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 13:54:54

Cody - even a really slow twitch guy should be able to do 12x200 with 200 rest in 29-30 seconds if he is biomechanically OK. Also, if you have very little fast twitch fibers, and can run even one 200 in 32 even it is 100% all out, you would be able to run at least 4:40 for the mile, and you should be able to do 3x1 mile in 4:50 each. I would argue that your hold-back is of a structural nature. In fact, I would argue that almost any male runner that cannot break 27 in a 200 is structurally impaired. Maybe there is a leg length difference, bowed bones, damaged disks in the lower back, etc. But it is not power. Power comes into play when you try to run sub-24. Of course, it is possible for somebody with a lot of power to be stuck at 25 because he is structurally impaired. But I would say 27 is the slowest you can go if you are structurally OK and do not suffer from muscular dystrophy or some other similar disease regardless of your fast/slow twitch composition.

The fix for that is difficult, and in most cases not known to science, or at least not any science that I am familiar with. I do have a goal/dream of developing a science of understanding and eventually fixing structural impairments in runners, though. I am currently looking for somebody with the right equipment/background/desire/interest to help me.

I don't know. I just run.

From Cody on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 14:12:58

Paul, if you weren't so busy winning all the time, you would have more time to ponder why you are not winning.

Sasha, why is there never an easy fix? I have followed all that you have tried to do to help your form and have been amazed at your persistence. Now I understand why. It is frustrating to not be able to fix a problem so you just keep at it until you finally do come to a solution.

I need to hit the track and see what I can do all-out one day to give you more accurate data to analyze. It has been a while since I did that.

Is this the most comments ever on a thread?

I agree with Paul- I don't know, I just run.

From James on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 14:51:00

Form is a very interesting subject. Cody- I think if you could figure out if there is something wrong with your form (and this goes for all of us) it would help to some degree. But running fast is more than VO2 max and form, there is so many other factors and genetics that come into play, it is hard to really pin point things. I think all of us Logan guys have stuff that we can work on, but we are really not too bad.

Sasha- Steve and I have always said that if you weren't always putting on the brakes by sitting back so much you would be freaky fast! I do think if you could learn to run on you toes a little more and push forward with your stride instead of pulling back you would see quite a bit of time come off of your marathons. None the less, you are still very good the way you run, better than me. Form is a relative things, and who is to say exactly how we should run. Running, for the most part, should be as natural as possible, although sometimes we need a bit of help. Michael Johnson is the fastest man ever(that is something that should never even be argued) and everyone always told him he had bad form. But look at what he did, and I have never seen anyone look more relaxed for having the wrong form.

When I measure my VO2 max it was in March when I was just getting into shape, so could even be a bit higher now. I think in an all out sprint I could still run a 26-27 second 200. Back in the day I could run around 24 flat, not bad for a distance kid! I know that my form is decent, but I can work on it. I definitly don't have the spring in my step, or get up on my toes like I did 6-7 years ago. I know that my fastwitch count is about zero right now too, and that has a lot to do with it. I used to be able to dunk a mini ball(never got a big one down) and now I bet I can't get halfway up the net. Everything I do now is completely slowtwitch recuiting.

Steve has just won the prize for the most long and boring comments ever in Fast running blog history!!! Things like this are kind of fun to analyze though, and we all have things that we can do to get a little better, but none of us are genetic freaks that will be setting world records either!

From Jon on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 15:04:15

James, what is it that I need to work on in your opinion?

Cody, you can have your form analyzed for $75 at the Logan Hospital- they have an awesome setup there with some special computer software, treadmill, etc.

From James on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 15:45:00

Jon,

I don't really know because I never pay attention that much, unless it is blatantly obvious or Sasha pricks my interest with his analytical mind. Besides, I am not an expert on biomechanics, I have only had a few classes. I'll tell you tomorrow when I am following you in the 10K.

From steve on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 17:20:59

OK - with all this being said about our VO2 Max. Where does this put us?

I obviously don't have a 86 VO2 Max - but am I wasting my time - thinking in the back of my head that if I keep with it - In a year or two I might be able to bring it down to the mid 2:20's in the marathon? Are my goals realistic to my potential? That's what I ultimately would like to know.

From Wildbull on Fri, Aug 03, 2007 at 17:26:02

You never know what tomorrow will bring. But if you keep at it. chanches are, you will have success!

some one kill this blog already!!!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Aug 06, 2007 at 12:52:24

James - I have tried every possible reasonable suggestion with my changing my form, including trying to get up on my toes, with absolutely no improvement. I can fake the looks, but I cannot fake the efficiency. I believe the beast is hiding somewhere in the pelvic bones and/or the lower back. I know what a good push off is supposed feel like. I get it when bounding. I also remember what running felt like at 13, and how much worse it felt at 15.

James - if you can indeed hit 26-27 in an all out 200, I would say that your fast twitch count is pretty good. If you were predominantly slow twitch, and you could go that fast at all, with your current training you would have run the DesNews 10 K under 32:00. I think you've lost something biomechanically since college, although it may not be visible in the form.

Jon - I think you need to work on your aerobic endurance for a couple of years very consistently, then you'll be smelling the Trial's qualifier.

Steve - I would more specific ideas if we could measure your VO2 Max correctly, and if we could time you in an all out 100 or 200. It would also help if you raced an honest properly measured 5 K. However, assuming the biomechanical damage since your glory days is either non-existent or still repairable, I think sub-2:20 is a very realistic goal. My intuition does tell me, though, that some damage has happened - with your training you would be running faster by now otherwise.

Great run with the club. We had some traffic issues crossing Snow Canyon - other than that it was great.  Dave put the moves of going back to the store so I tried holding on for as long as I could and decided I better hold back for Hayden. And that fact I thought my insides were in a rice cooker.

Ruth was a little behind Hayden, Dave and Clyde because her knee was acting up. She eneded up turning around when they all crossed the road. I ended up catching up to them when I got the the Entrada Golf Course.

Hayden held his own really well - He dropped off the back a little on the way back - Pretty good considering he did speed in the morning.

I agree with you about needing to be more carefull crossing the roads. We also should try to keep the pace at 7:30 for atleast the first 1.5 - 2 miles.

Hey Steve

I won't be there tomorrow morning. As you know school starts tomorrow and I'm supposed to be to the school by 7:15 every morning. That is already going to be a challenge for me, especially when I'm trying to get a run in before work. I am going to try to get over to Hurricane High and do some speed. I tried to do an all out mile last night, but the results weren't too pleasing. I've been kind of down on myself lately with my training, but as I've gone back and looked at some of my workouts last year compared to where I'm at right now. I actually think I'm pretty close and should be able to run a faster marathon time than last year, if I can finish off August in good shape and have a few good weeks in September.

Hey Steve

I'm sorry the race didn't turn out like planned. I thought we were moving ok through the first 7 or 8 miles. It didn't really show that you weren't feeling that great.

Anyway, I know you're upset with how your race turned out, but I really want to thank you for all that you have done to help the rest of us. Without your support and encouragement I don't know if we would have the strong running club that we do. I know Clyde and Dave are the fast guys and kind of the leaders on most of the runs, but you do so much to get everything organized and put together, thanks.

I'm glad you guys had a successful time at the expo and the store is doing good. I think once you guys get into your house maybe things will slow down a little and your training can pick back up again. Don't get to down on yourself, you've had some really good races this year. We just have to keep training and working to get better.

Good job getting out, I'm still taking some time off, but I should probably try a little harder to get a run in. So far this week has been crazy and it is only Tuesday

Great run today. Felt really good - a little tired the last min though.  Ran from Diamond Valley down to the turkey farm rd to the T-Bone trail and back to the store. Bill, Dave, Mike, Clyde, Bruce and Myself.  We dropped in down to the low 6's for most of the last half of the run.

Rumor has it that you are making the "fast running chicks'" T-shirts. Please make one of them a small for me. I would love to have one, but don't like to wear things that are too big. Thanks.

Great 10.5 mile run this morning.  It's amazing how exciting it was watching, looking at pictures and reading about the Trials this weekend.

Went out this afternoon for an easy 4.25 around the store.

Great run with the St. George Running Club last night from the running store. Did the Sunbrook course with the extension over to Snow Canyon Prkwy.  We had a few High School guys who really pushed the pace from the very beginning.  I was happy that the first 2.5 miles were down hill so I could get warmed up a little.  My lower abdominal have really been bugging me and it takes about 2-3 miles before they stop aching.  Nice steady pace the whole way.  Dave and I picked it up a little at the end until my Bajio Lunch decided to say -"HELLO"!

Hi Steve,

We still haven't met but I look forward to running with you sometime down the road. For the link to your store, I can get there but I can't navigate on it? Is it up and running or still just a template? Have a asked you this before. I'm having the strangest sense of déjà vu while I type this.

Later, Adam

From steve hooper on Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 18:11:26

Christi,

The girls shirts should be in tomorrow. We have singlets and T's. Let me know what you would like and we'll get one to you. In the next few day's they should be posted on the website.

From Christi on Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 19:34:19

Cool- I'll just wait to see them on the website. I'm not sure if I want a T or singlet. I guess you'll have them at the store also- to look at?

Nice to be feeling better again.  After Getting strep throat in Tuscon right before the marathon, moving the week after that then coming down with strep throat again the following week - it's nice to be back to "normal". I think I only got in 4 runs this month so far. So anyways....

I had a great run today - 9.25 miles out in the fields toward the beaver dam rd.  I'm excited about exploring all these new roads around our new house.

Ran the Sunbrook Loop with the club at 5pm.  Mike, Allen, Ruth, Hyden and Myself.  Took off pretty good clip down to the golf course low to mid 6's.  Then up the Sunbrook Course Hill - Which never seems to stop.  Got a little wet going over the Santa Clara River, then back to the store.  Hyden and I picked it up going back up Sunset dropped it down into the mid 5's - However I couldn't hold on to him all the way up the hill.

Great Run!

Great run this morning - a little cold.  Mike, Allen, Bill and Myself showed and a couple that decided they didn't want to run 14 miles.  We ended up doing the Bloomington Loop from the store - nice drop in the beginning of the run and a good climb at the end on the way back.

Felt pretty good.  I was still feeling some of the aftermath from Thurs. run and pushing it with Hyaden towards the end.  So I'm glad we just took it easy and steady. Bill had to turn back - he hadn't run very much this week due to injury issues. Mike and Allen did really well and continue to improve.

Good Job Steve. I've still been having some hip issues, so I took this past week off. I guess I should try a massage, I'll have to get the info from you about the guy you go to. I would really like to get over this injury and get back to training. I need to work off some extra weight I packed on the last few weeks.

From Mike Warren on Sun, Dec 30, 2007 at 14:10:13

Dustin, Steve Starley is the guy we get the massages from, his phone number is 632-2035. I had never had a massage in my life and didn't want to start. Hooper convinced me to give it a try with my knee and shin issues. It has made a world of diffrence, Thanks for the advice Steve and thanks for organizing the runs, I appreciate all you do for us.

Happy New Year.

Any word on the running jackets? I am heading down to PF Chang's in Phoenix on Jan. 9 and plan on wearing the singlet and it would be great to have the warmup jacket to help advertise as well. Just thought I would check.

Keep on running strong.

Jeff, I talked to the embroidering company before Christmas and he said they should be done by New Years. So, I'll call on Wed when I get back to the store. What are you shooting for at PF Chang's?

From jtshad on Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 16:00:57

Thanks...I indicated a 2:35 on my registration. Hopefully coming off my sickness and a light week won't hurt me too bad. With it being relatively flant and lower elevation, I think I can achieve this. Goals: Gold - 2:35, Silver - 2:38, Bronze - 2:40ish.

From steve on Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 16:48:49

Jeff, Those are some pretty exciting times, I think they are realistic goals as well. That should put you somewhere in the top 20 in that marathon! Keep it up!
