TURKEY TROT DAY!!! After the last race, I was extremely nervous that someone fast would show up to the 5K and earn my turkey. I had also promised I would make a turkey for the Thanksgiving festivities at this upcoming T-day, so the pressure was on. Warmed up with David and he gave me some great 5K strategies. 1. Stay with or behind the person that is in your running area that you want to beat. 2. Listen to their breathing. If they are working hard and you are chill, you will surely be able to pass them up. 3. Save some room for a kick at the end of the race. Off we went down the streets of Laughlin and the first mile a cross country chick totally passed me up. I started to stress a little but I knew if she won, I could still get my turkey (for my age group). I let her go and relaxed into a nice pace behind some men. The winds really blow on the base, so I used the group of men as my shield. I could still see my husband up ahead in second place, taking it easy at this point, he looked strong. Mile 2 is a hill and I knew I could regain the lead for the ladies. (Del Rio runners don't run too many hills). I passed the group of men, the girl up ahead, and now I was in third, after my husband. Coming down the hill I ripped into a good stride. Last mile is uphill and I kept the lead. Ran into the finish at 20:40, a definite course PR. I was SUPER proud of my performance. David won as well!! On the last quarter mile, he caught the fast cross country boy and flew in to the finish. The Sondrups brought not only 1 turkey home, but 2!!! Yahoo! We had a lot of fun this morning. :)
