Yet another personal distance record. Probably ran a little harder than I should have - 58:39 (8:23 pace) - since I was feeling the legs burn in the last mile or two. The long runs should probably be 9-minute pace for me (or slower) but I can't stand seeing the slow splits as I pass by my landmarks. Got an 8-miler and a 9-miler planned over the next 2 weeks to work on it.

| 36:20 (9:05 pace). Purposefully slow to test a couple of things. First, I wanted to see what a 9-minute pace felt like because I think that may be closer to my target pace for weekend long runs when I get there. Second I wanted to see what my heart rate would be at the end. It was 152 immediatelay after I stopped. So I have to guess it was in the 140s most of the time which is low 60s%. So I'm thinking maybe an 8:45 pace for long runs is more appropriate. I'll shoot for that on my 8-mile next weekend. |

Ran at lunch on base on the 1-mile track. Felt like going fast so the plan was to run 1 easy, 1 quicker, 1 at max speed and 1 recovery. I only managed a half-mile at max speed - got a side stich but mostly I was just plain winded. Good confirmation that I need to be concentrating on endurance at this point. It played out like this:
8:34 - warm-up
7:41 - felt ok after this one, so let 'er rip
3:33 - half-mile crushed me (7:06 pace)
13:08 - jogged the last 1.5 at an 8:45 pace
Overall 8:14 pace and the realization I'm still not in great shape yet - back to adding mileage! |

We'll call it an "moderate aerobic" 6.0 on base on the 1-mile loop. Wind is worth noting - 20-25 mph steady, gusting to 35. I wonder what effect that ultimately has if the course is a loop? I know it hurts overall since the headwind hurts more than the tailwind helps. Who knows...
Negative split was 25:23, 24:59 for a 50:22 overall (8:24 pace). Definitely some good effort the last 2 miles. |

Yet another milestone - my first run of over an hour, though I hit the 1-hour mark before mile 7 this time. A nice quiet tailwind going out and an irritating, loud headwind coming back was too tough to negative split but the effort was definitely stronger on the way home. 34:10 and 34:55 were the two 4-mile splits (1:09:05 total, 8:38 pace overall). Final mile was 8:05 into the teeth of the wind. Pretty happy with it overall.

AM - Did a somewhat unexpected PT test, which includes a 1.5 mile run. I ended up running 10 seconds slower (10:40) than last month. Granted, the run comes right after max effort pushups and situps so you're breathing hard at the starting line, but still disappointing. Last month I started too fast - 90 seconds at the first quarter mile and 3:10 at the half-mile point, then a highly-labored 7:20 mile. This time I started slow and had too much energy at the end, actually negative-splitting which seems stupid for such a short race. I think after my 10K trail race I'll mix in a day of speed work each week so I get used to running fast more often, but still stick with the 10% mileage buildup rule.
PM - Did a 4.0 in 33:06 (8:16 pace). The silver lining to today was that I was ready to run 7 hours later with no effects from the PT test (other than the pushups and situps). It was like I hadn't run at all this morning. I have to guess that's from the increased mileage lately, so it's nice to see myself recover so quickly. Think I'll still do an easy effort tommorow though. |

| Ran a very even-paced 6.0 on the one-mile track in 50:34 (8:26 pace). No mile split varied more than 5 seconds from the average pace. Then, as I crossed the line for 6 miles, I sped up to simulate the finish of my upcoming 10K. I sprinted to the quarter-mile post and made it there by 51:54 for a 1:20 quarter-mile. About what I expected but it's really humbling considering some people on this blog can hold my quarter-mile pace for a half-marathon or more. Wow... Still, a feel-good workout for me and I'll get tomorrow off. |

Tried to get a feel for what my 10k pace would be so I started out the first 3 miles at what felt like a pace that I could hold for 6.2. Turned out to be a 23:47 (7:56 pace) and I felt just fine the whole time, and that I could probably speed it up a little if I needed to. Then a cool-down of 8:25 to finish the run.
So if the 10K was on the roads, I'd say a good goal would be sub-49:00. But, not knowing what to expect from the trail, we'll call the goal sub-50:00. Hopefully the ground and hills won't drain all my energy and 48-something will be possible, we'll see. |

Overall 1:14:56 (8:20 pace). We got a family Garmin (the 405 to "fit" my wife better) so of course I tested it out for her this morning. Pretty cool. My landmarks were actually pretty accurate. My miles were: 8:36, 8:27, 8:36, 8:36, 8:30, 8:21, 7:47, 7:29 and 8:29. I threw 2 tempo miles in there (couldn't resist). I had to try to impress the watch so it got a good first impression. Anyway, another successful mileage building week. Next week I'll be doing more easy runs to get ready for my race.

Just a little jog to get the blood flowing a bit before the race tomorrow...seemed like the right thing to do. 9:37 pace. Got a little preview of warm weather running as it was somehow 77 degrees already. Didn't like it. Three or four weeks ago we saw a wind chill of 3 degrees and now it's almost 80? Pretty soon, I'm gonna start having to wake up early to run.
Race weather looks like it'll be a bit windy and overnight rain should make the course nice and muddy....sweet. |

Whew, having never run on a trail, I must first admit that I severely underestimated the difficulty that it added. It rained the entire race too which would have been fine on roads but made it muddy and slick on the trail.
The first half-mile was nice and open as we headed for the rugged hills. Checked the Garmin and it had a 7:30 pace which felt 10K-ish and just fine. Then we entered the trail part...
It was very rocky and narrow. When it went uphill, it really went steeply uphill. The downhills you had to go even slower because of hairpin turns, rocky terrain, steep hills and bad slippery footing. You have to concentrate with every step and even so I rolled my ankle a couple of times (minor rolls). The first mile ended up being 8:10 and it became clear this wouldn't be about time, just survival! The next 4 or 5 miles were a blur of sharp turns and crooked terrain. I glanced at the Garmin a couple of times and saw 8:20s for a pace. At first I thought it was because of all the 180 turns and maybe the signal was getting blocked by the hills and trees (it felt like 7:30 pace) but then realized that it was accurate and that's all I was gonna get on this trail. The GPS track on Google Earth looks like a bowl of spaghetti!
Once I accepted that, I had fun and just made sure I kept a good, even effort and got a great workout. I even went the wrong way once and had to double back a little (the pack of 5 I was leading all passed me)! Pretty fun little race though, with some cool views on some of the ridges. They admitted it was more like 9.8K and the Garmin agreed. Ended up with an 8:19 pace for the whole thing but I know I gave 100% effort so it was a great workout. Looking forward to the road 10K in April to see what I can do. |

My first early-morning run. Didn't like it. But the run went ok in spite of the cold, dark tiredness. Did 7 miles with 2 slow, 3 fast, and 2 slow:
2 in 17:35 (8:47 avg)
3 in 23:06 (7:48, 7:40, 7:38)
2 in 18:23 (9:12 avg, I was tired!)
Overall 8:28 pace. That should be enough fast miles for the week, I say. |

| Well, the ankle was uncomfortable this morning. I started my run and only made it a few houses down. This was supposed to be my first 10-mile run but it'll have to wait. I guess it's a minor sprain from rolling it at the trail race but it's weird that is wasn't this bad earlier in the week (I've obviously run on it a few times since rolling it). Guess it needs time to heal up? My mistake was not icing it right away after the race, but it just didn't seem bad at the time. Anyway, will ice it today and probably end up giving it a few days rest, we'll see. Bummer. |

I'd call the ankle 95% now - I'll assume it can heal the rest of the way while I run through it (even though I know nothing about running and injuries). It must be the most minor of sprains according to anonymous random internet websites. Good enough for me. |

Just as I was about to call the ankle fully healed, it pulls a fast one on me again. Felt fine all day, then 30 seconds into my run tonight it starts hurting. By 1 minute it's too painful to run on again, just like Saturday. I really don't get it, it sems to be completely random. I've been icing it when I can, even when it didn't hurt. Most of what I read said it's ok to run on a sprain if you can do it without pain so I wouldn't think I've been reaggravating it (running Monday and Tuesday), but tonight would suggest otherwise. My plan is to try again tomorrow. If that fails I'll take a week off, then go to the doctor if it's still not good after a week. Very confused.... |

AM - My wife slept in through her 5am fitness boot camp thing so I had a rare unplanned opportunity to run. I got up and there was no pain in the ankle at all so I did what any over-eager newbie would do and put on my shoes for a run. I felt it a little on the first couple of miles (pain was a 1 on a scale from 0-10) but then it went away completely. Finished the 4.0 mile run with an 8:34 overall pace. Iced the ankle and it still feels good. So weird. Maybe I'm stepping on it weird or there's some kind of problem with my form on the days when it hurts.
PM - Ok, another 4 miles. Ankle started out about a 2-2.5 out of 10 then went to a 1 after a mile, and completely painless by three miles. I made it an up-tempo run (8:00-8:05 pace for the first three miles). Then I threw in a 3:20 half mile followed by a half-mile recovery. 7:54 overall pace for the entire 4. The legs just wanted to go tonight so I let them. Iced the ankle and it's doing fine. |

| 4 more @ 8:10 pace. Ankle remained predictable - slight dull ache for the first 2 miles only. Hopefully good to go for my first 10-miler tomorrow. I think I might have been babying it too much before. Now I'm exercising it at work all day with ankle circles, etc. |

Finally got in the big ten miler. Laps were 8:05, 8:20, 8:25, 8:27, 8:24, 8:22, 8:19, 8:13, 8:19, 8:31. 8:20 average. I wasn't shooting for a pace really, just whatever felt right. By mile 8 I was starting to feel the burn and I could feel my form getting worse. I'm starting to get the point of these long runs - mile 10 was sloppy and I just wanted to finish. Hopefully I'll be able to keep it together for longer as I progress.
The left ankle, which was my problem ankle, felt fine after 2 miles again. Now the right ankle, which I also rolled 2 weeks ago, started aching a little after mile 6 or so. Sheez... So I iced the right one first when I finished. I definitely won't be entering anymore trail races again; I'm just too clutzy.

Normally I take Monday out but Danielle is going out of town and I'll have the kids to myself so I'll take Tuesday or Wednesday off.
My ankle is 99% now and the entire run was pain free so I decided I'd throw in a sprint mile. I picked mile 4 because it climbs 50 ft uphill and I don't want to go around overestimating my speed (although, crap, I realize now there was a 10mph tailwind). Anyway, I did the first 3 at an 8:27 pace, then broke into a nice 1-mile sprint. The climb all comes in the first half-mile and I was right at a 6:40 pace at the top after 0.5. Then I started working it down as the terrain flattened out to finish at a 6:28 for the mile. So maybe a little faster than I expected, which was cool. Last mile was an 8:51 cooldown for an 8:09 overall pace.
If I put 6:28 for a mile into some of the predictor calculators out there, it says my 10k and HM paces should be faster than I know I can hold for those distances, so there's further confirmation I'm not in shape yet. For example, 7:55/mile for the half is hilariously beyond my ability, so I think I'm doing the right thing trying to add a few miles each week. |

My most hated wind, the south wind, was whipping around today. We live in a subdivision on the south end of a highway, so I always run north to a lake which starts about 4.5 miles to the north. The south wind means I get thrashed by a headwind all the way home when I'm most tired. I did good today though, it was a great run. I almost went down some east-west dirt roads but they were a little too muddy from the melted snow so I pressed north to explore some more of the lake. My splits were 8:22, 8:24, 8:28, 8:35, 8:17, 8:31, 8:26, 8:19, 8:16, 8:09, 7:40. 1:31:35 total, average 8:19. I'm pretty proud of the last 4 into a 10-15 mph headwind. Mile 6 had a closed-off road (hard to tell that from satellite imagery) that caused me to go trail running for about a minute, and I had to leap some cacti and duck under mesquite branches. My right kneecap didn't appreciate the maneuvering as I'm starting to get a very mild case of runner's knee. Not enough to bother me during a run though.
One thing I did different today was to pop 200mg of caffeine as I walked out the door. It gave me a great burst of energy around an hour into the run (right as I was starting those last 4 miles). I don't feel bad about it at all, I think it really helped! Next week I'm gonna try taking a gu at some point. At some point, I'm gonna have to figure out a way to hydrate during the run.

My 3-mile time of 21:46 today beat my 3-mile actual race time from November by over 40 seconds, and I didn't sprint it out or anything today. Finally, crystal-clear proof of definite improvement! Got the knee twinge after I slowed it down for mile 5 and it's still here now, so this might be something I just deal with until I'm ready to take a week off. Still hoping it goes away on its own but I didn't feel it at all during the tempo portion so, whatever, I'm running on it for now. |

Ahh, my first interval experience at the track. I found out it's almost exactly 2 miles to the ACU track from my house so I did 2 warm up miles, then 3 at the track, then 2 easy back home. The warmup miles were 8:20s.
The first track mile was 2 quick 400s with an easy one after each. The fast ones were 1:36 and 1:32. Some of the track team was there so I went a few lanes outside as they blew by me often.
The second mile I did 4 quick 200s with an easy 200 after each. The fast ones were 38, 40, 45 and 44. As you can see I was not doing well toward the end of those! My easy jogs were getting close to walks.
The third mile I had planned to do 4 100s and jog the rest of the lap. I only did 2 because my knee was starting to hurt. It didn't like the speedy runs at all. But I was also wiped out so I caught my breath for the last 2 laps around the track and jogged home. I think the 100 times were about 18 seconds but I don't really know where the start and finish for those were supposed to be. I don't know my way around the track at all; I was a swimmer back in high school. In fact, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to use the inside lanes to get the right distances in turns. Is is measured from the middle or inside? I guessed inside.
I babied my knees on the way home 8:30s pace. 8:30 overall for the 7 miles. Hope I didn't too much damage to my knee; it feels ok now, just not great. Will hold off on the track workouts until they feel better, I think. |

I got my first introduction to "The Wall" today. For starters, there was a 15-20 mph south wind, gusting to 30. So I knew they way back home would be brutal, but it turned out to be the least of my worries. The problem was I didn't fuel up before I left at about 11. I got up early, went to my daughter's soccer game, and all I had was a piece of toast....dumb! Probably didn't hydrate well either.
So I took off at normal-feeling pace, but had a huge tailwind so the splits were a bit low. Here's the first 6 miles: 8:11, 8:09, 8:23, 8:24, 8:27, 8:34. Perfectly normal long-run splits for me considering the first 2 were hugely aided and the next 4 were slightly aided.
Now coming back: 8:50, 9:10, 9:11, 9:24, 13:13, 11:12. So I was fighting the wind on the way back and at first attributed the slowness to that. Nope. Completely ran out of fuel. My legs felt like they were made of lead. The odd thing was that I was breathing easy, probably a decently low heart rate but zero use of my muscles. Felt pretty dehydrated too. At the 10.5 mark, I started walking and my legs were wobbly. At this point I would have called my wife for a ride home...if I brought my cellphone (lesson learned). Walked a half mile, then tried to run the final mile home. I managed to "run" it all and could only do it in 11 minutes! Wow, how am I ever gonna do a marathon, or even a half!?
Time to take it easy this next week and hopefully I learned my lesson about fueling/hydrating. Very humbling day after last weekend's long run went so great. Gave me more respect for the distance as well. I will start slower no matter what next time.

| Calling off my run today, and probably tomorrow. I think I did some additional damage to my knees yesterday (now they're both bad)! So a recovery week this week, even if that means only running 2-3 times, then easier miles the next week when I start building again. When I think about it, I had only been running 12-14 miles/week a couple months ago, now I'm trying to do 12 mile runs. Gonna try that "listening to my body" thing and not force it so much. |

| We got another 4 inches of snow today/last night. The fact that snow is almost normal now is scary. Anyway, went with the treadmill since the knee could probably use the extra shock absorption. Did 30 minutes at easy speeds with only minor discomfort that went away after a mile. I think this scale-back week will be just what the doctor ordered. |

| Early morning run outside, 8:30 pace, 24 degrees F. That was very cold for me, I think this is about my lower limit unless I get some good gloves and warmer underwear. Boxers did not cut it today. Anyway, this time the left knee did great and the right ached just a little more, probably because of running on the hard surfaces vs. the TM from yesterday. Weird how it switches like that; at least it's even. Still, they're feeling pretty good now. |

Winds today were from the south at 26 mph gusting to 36. And I thought I'd go ahead and run on my north-south highway...I may not do that again.
So the fist 3 miles (going north) I almost felt like I was walking, my effort was so low. I could feel the wind picking me up and it felt like I was being carried down the road. Averaged 8:22.
I knew it would be bad coming back, so I set 9:00/mile as a goal and managed to average 8:51 coming back. Those were probably almost tempo pace effort, no kidding. The gusts would actually knock me back on my heels a bit. Judging by my breathing, I was definitly giving huge effort. So much for taking it easy this week - I shoulda just kept the same effort and run 10-minute miles since my knee started complaining about the hard effort I gave coming home but I couldn't stand not meeting the arbitrary goal I set. Anyway, the knees are doing ok now so no damage done I think. |

6 early-morning miles (caffeine aided this time, so much more energy). Averaged 8:09 with the last mile in 7:28. Felt great, I think my knees have turned a corner and I'm on the downhill portion of recovery.
Tomorrow would be a beautiful day for a long run (perfect weather) but my wife is going to Fort Worth to run Cowtown so I'll be watching the kids. Maybe I'll get in a short evening run to cap off my recovery week. |

I wound up having time for 5 before dark so I decided to go at my half-marathon goal pace (8:00) to see how tough it would be. Splits were 8:03, 7:57, 8:03, 7:50, 7:54 (7:57 avg). I was definitely working harder than normal but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too bad at all. I could have kept going a few more for sure, though I'm pretty sure I could not have done 8 more like that.

Day off today, which works out since it's raining.
I think I may have found a half-marathon to try - Oklahoma City on April 25. It's a 4-hour drive, but it'll be my last chance before it gets too hot for a race like that. I think I can get in a few decent long runs by then including a couple 13-milers. Cons are that it's 2 weeks after my 10k, and it starts at 6:30 am but I really don't want to wait until October (7+ months) to run my first HM. Don't know if I'll be ready for 1:45 yet but it's worth a try, right?
**Did some research - one of the few cities that averages more wind than we get here...Oklahoma City! Apparently it was brutal last year and the 5 miles coming back are usually into the wind. I hate wind! I wouldn't decide based on that, but maybe temper my expectations. |

Early morning run, but I felt good today so maybe I'm getting used to running right after waking up. Usually I'm dying by the time I get 3 houses down. Did an 8:20 warmup followed by 3 @ HMGP (23:50/7:57 avg).
Oh, forgot to mention I'm officially signed up for the OKC HM (thus the focus on goal pace miles). Got the hotel too, and now my wife might run it (her first HM too) while we leave the kids with her parents - sounds almost too good to be true! She'll decide this month as she tries some longer runs. |

Plan walking out the door was 1 easy, 3 @ HMGP and 1 easy. Splits were 8:23, 7:44, 7:32, 7:37, 8:24. I started out too fast and didn't feel like slowing it down so I held pace...why not. 7:56 overall for the run.
I looked at some half-marathon training plans to get an idea of what to do but I think the best thing is to keep slowly stepping up my long run distance and weekly mileage while throwing in more HMGP miles to get used to that pace. |

My 4th super-early run this week. I'll quit mentioning it after this, I'm just so surprised I've been consistently doing it, so to speak. Anyway, 4 miles @ 8:24 pace, all easy miles for the first time since Sunday.
Tomorrow I get revenge on the 12-miler that crushed me 2 weeks ago. I'm dorking it up and bringing a hydration belt w/ Gatorade and a Gu, as well as carb loading today. You can lauugh, I know it's overkill for 12 miles but I'm paranoid now. |

I managed to even the score today against the 12-miler with all my fuel (although I forgot caffeine!) Conditions were pretty good, overcast, about 55 degrees and a south wind steady around 10-12 mph which is about as calm as it gets here mid-morning. So miles 1,2,3 and 7 were a tailwind; 5, 10, 11 and 12 were a headwind and the rest were a mixed bag. Splits: 8:16, 8:14, 8:25, 8:32, 8:46, 8:37, 8:11, 8:26, 8:26, 8:24, 8:09, 7:56. Overall pace - 8:22. Obviously I stepped on the gas a bit into the wind for the last 3 and actually started fading pretty fast on the last half-mile. I watched my mile 12 pace slide from 7:30s to 7:59 and had to dig a little to keep it under 8. I'm limping around a bit but I'm pretty pleased overall, so I'll allow myself to try the half-marathon distance next weekend.

My legs were fresh off the rest day and I was feeling as injury-free as I have in awhile so I figured it was time for some light abuse. I'm planning on running a local 5k on the 20th this month to check my speed and I estimated 7:00-7:10 pace should be about what I can do. So with that in mind I wanted to do 4 x 800 repeats at that pace (3:30). So the workout would be 2 easy miles to the university track, then the 800s with a slow 400 in between each, then 2 easy miles home. It was already windy (15-18 mph by 5:30 am) but I figured that wouldn't matter much at the track.
2 miles to the track @ 8:57 pace
800s were 3:24, 3:19, 3:17, 3:17.
2 miles back home: 8:30, 7:54 (HMGP on the last)
Overall pace for the 7 miles: 8:04
Obviously overshot the pace a little on the 800s but I held up ok, though I started losing my form a bit on the last 400. It was kinda funny because the girls' track team was there doing 800s as well and although they stopped to rest after each one, they all crushed me pretty bad even though I was doing great by my standards. Overall, I'm quite happy with the workout and my knees are no worse for it. |

I probably was looking at my watch too much to tinker with and manage the pace but it was fun and it kept me engaged and focused the entire run, which was a nice change. I decided around mile 5 that I'd burn off the 0.21 miles at the end to hit a full 10K. Splits were 8:32, 8:18, 8:06, 7:54, 7:41, 7:07, 1:19 (for the last fraction of a mile). Overall 7:53 pace (48:59). I think I should be able to shave a couple minutes off that total to hit my goal when I race this next month. |

Off to the in-laws' this afternoon, about a 5 hour drive. I'll get to do my long run tomorrow (13 mi) on a nice paved running trail they have there that's about 2.5 miles long and just go out and back a few times. They don't really have anything like that here. |

It turned out to be a great day for running in Longview, without the nasty winds that we get in the western part of the state. A nice 45-50 degrees or so at the start. The trail I was running on had some nice hills too, steeper than the highways I've been running on, but only 20-30 foot climbs/descents for the most part. I took along 20 oz. of Powerade, and tried out a Gu and a Clif shot in miles 5 and 9.
Splits - 8:18, 8:20, 8:32, 8:22, 8:25, 8:23, 8:21, 8:26, 8:26, 8:22, 8:15, 8:09, 7:53 and 31 sec. Avearge mile 8:19, total 1:48:45. Garmin measured .07 miles for the last chunk. The trail is marked every quarter-mile and was pretty accurate but I was running an extra .01 or so every mile for the first few. So I practiced runing the tangents and actually made up ground which is why I got 13.07 miles on the watch - pretty cool.
Anyway, it was a nice confidence builder, although I'm fairly sure I'm going faster than I'm supposed to for a casual long run. I'm always pretty wasted at the end. Hopefully I can shave off 20 seconds per mile on race day!

| I took Sunday off instead of the usual Monday so I could go fishing with my father-in-law. This morning I did 5 more on the running trail @ 8:20 pace before we drove home. My left knee stung a bit through the whole run this time; they usually calm down after a couple miles (and it's usually my right knee). I think it's the steeper hills on that trail, coupled with the fact that I'd never done 13 miles before. So I'm really thinking the knees just need a week of complete rest to heal, and they will get it - in May when I'm done racing for awhile. For now, I'll scale it back to 30 or so miles this week and keep the pace slower until the 5k. |

I love running in the afternoon - first, I get to spend the day dreaming up a workout but mostly I'm just plain faster later in the day. My knees were feeling great - not saying I could go do wall sits but I knew my easy-run-plan for this week was out the window. I have no self-control. The workout I decided on was a pyramid - 1 mile each @ HMGP, 10KGP, 5KGP, 10KGP and HMGP. So after a 1-mile warmup it should look something like 8, 7:30, 7, 7:30, 8 for the pace.
Splits: 8:14 warmup, then 7:54, 7:29, 6:44, 7:09, 7:43. Average was 7:33 for the entire 6.
I was nervous about even being able to hit the planned splits so it was a nice surprise. The final 10k mile was a bit of a breakthrough because I should have been wiped out after the sub-7 mile and the last 10k mile was uphill but my breathing was actually recovering. The last mile felt easy. I should do more of these target-pace runs because they really keep me interested and engaged - and I go faster. But only in the afternoon! |

Also, I checked the weather forecast at racetime for my 5K on Saturday - looks like 22mph steady winds, 28 degree wind chill and 40% chance of showers. Great. The half is still my focus though, so no big deal; it just would've been nice to have more comfortable conditions. |

The weather ended up being 31 degrees, winds 22 gusting to 35 from the north, ~18 degree wind chill. But I already paid, and I've never run an actual 5K so I never thought about skipping it.
The race started out going north so the first mile was almost all direct headwind, the second mile was about neutral overall and the last was a tailwind. I was happy at first that we would get the brutal headwind mile out of the way first but it ended up being my undoing. Splits were 7:09, 7:24, 7:20, then I never stopped the watch.
The race was small (guessing 50 people or so). After a minute or so, I was in 4th place, where I would stay the entire time (like I said, small race). I knew I needed 7:05s to break 22 but I shouldn't have tried to get it on that first mile into gale-force winds! Anyway I was jelly after that. The last two-thirds were total misery but I still gave it everything. I remember taking my gloves off and holding them in the last mile and it felt like my hands barely had the strength to grasp them! I'm not sure what kind of effort that 7:09 was worth into that wind but it was obviously more than my fitness allowed - I guess it was like sprinting a mile and then expecting to race 2 more right afterward. I've run 3-mile tempos at a faster overall pace than my race today - oh well, lesson learned!
I don't even know if they're even going to have official results online but if they do I'll update; I think I got 1st or 2nd in my age group but I didn't hang around; it was a bit cold anyway.
**Right after lunch (ouch) I did 2 lazy TM miles to get to 30 for the week. Still kind of disappointed about that time but now that I've thought about it maybe it was just dumb racing instead of bad fitness. I shouldn't have tried to stay on goal pace running into a brick wall of wind and expect to recover. Ah well... I'll be smarter for the 10K next month.
***Last update - they posted results and the 22:32 was correct. I was #1 in my AG...out of 2 total! #4 of 44 racing that day. There were 21 no-shows, maybe the horizontal sleet scared people away. |

Stamina day. 2 mile warmup, 4 tempo miles @ 7:30 target (10KGP), 1 cooldown mile. Thought it would be tougher as I haven't done 4 miles @ tempo before but it was fine. Splits were 8:28, 8:33, 7:28, 7:17, 7:17, 7:00, 7:47. 7:15 average for the tempo, 7:41 for the whole run. I didn't notice I had a chance to break 7 in the last mile until there was only .05 left so I took off but it was too late to get it. Also, it was unplanned, but I ended up doing the cooldown @ HMGP to simulate mile 10 or 11 of the half.
So, yeah, the pace was faster in my 4 mile tempo today than in my 5k race...what a dummy. Today the wind was from the south @ 15mph. So I paid close attention to the pace on each leg around my university loops and tried to maintain an even effort. Going south I was running 7:45s and going north 6:55s. The crosswind legs were about 7:10. So, doing the math I came up with an approximation of the effect of wind on distance running. Looks like +2 sec/mile for every 1 mph of direct headwind, and -1 sec/mile for every 1 mph of direct tailwind. So for example, if you're running directly into a 10mph head wind, your pace will be 20 sec/mile slower. Let me know what y'all think of the accuracy of that with your experience. My guess is that there is not an exact linear relationship like that formula would imply; it's probably somewhat exponential, similar to a gas mileage curve which shows you getting dramatically worse gas mileage after 50 mph or so. But my brain isn't big enough to work that into a formula for running.
Applying that linear relationship to my Saturday disaster, my first mile would've been in the 6:20-6:30 range with no wind, probably close to a 1-mile PR for me. Makes sense that I was unable to move it for the last 2 miles of the race. Now that I feel like a complete nerd, I'll end the entry. |

Couldn't come up with anything interesting so I decided to do 3 fast half-miles at the end of miles 2, 3 and 4. I figured out how to set the Garmin auto lap to 0.5 mi which was a feat for me (it still took me 5 minutes to find that option). Anyway, the fast half-miles were 3:27, 3:13 and 3:06. The first was into a headwind and the other two were tailwinds. The rest of the run was 8:40s pace and the average for the entire 5.0 was 8:06.
I'm always surprised at how long a half mile is, and in each one I had to slow down because I was tired. Still need to build a lot more stamina. |

According to Weather.com, the winds were from the west, 24-39 mph, though it didn't feel quite that bad. Temperature was 60 when I left and 69 by the end. The good news was that I could use my favorite north-south highway to the lake and hopefully get mostly crosswinds. My splits were 8:21, 8:08, 8:21, 8:18, 8:18, 8:18, 8:37, 8:14, 8:26, 8:23, 8:28, 8:28, 8:40, 8:39. I hit the HM in 1:49:4x and total time running was 1:57:39 (8:24 avg).
I don't know why I can't start these runs a little slower. I should probably be doing them at 9:00 pace so I wouldn't be so wasted at the end. For the very last mile, I tried to speed it up to 8:00 (HMGP) but at 13.5 the needle went to empty and I crashed to almost 10:00 pace for the last half mile. Whoops. I'm starting to get too familiar with that feeling. Next week I gotta slow down a bit so I can finish stronger. This time I think dehydration played a role too; 20 oz must not be enough for me to do a 2-hour run when it's almost 70 degrees because my pee was an interesting color. But I probably wouldn't have sweated so much if I had gone slower at first. What feels like an easy long-run shuffle at mile 2 is an impossible sprint at mile 12.
Anyway, I think I got good training out of the run but it's a step backwards in my confidence level at breaking 1:45 next month. Next week I'll focus on longer mid-week runs and only go 13 on Saturday, at a slower pace hopefully.

This run was basically the same as 1 week ago with an extra HMGP mile at the end. It was a bit windier which might be why I couldn't quite equal the tempo times from last week (could not even manage 8:00 pace into the headwind this time), but I still hit the overall targets there. I also did not quite meet the HMGP on mile 7 as I was pretty wiped out, but managed to make up for it on the last mile to average out to sub-8 recovery miles. I was definitely relieved to hear the beep at 8 miles today, so I know I got good training. |

Got that 7:00 goal mile by the skin of my teeth. The first 0.3 or so was right into the 20mph wind and kicked my butt to the point where I kind of mentally gave up for a bit during the next 0.3, which was crosswind. But, I found a finishing kick for the last 0.4 with the tailwind. I brought the mile pace from 7:33 to 6:59 in the last 0.4 miles. I thought the graph of that mile was cool, but I'm apparently too dumb to figure out how to paste it in, sorry. Ctrl-c and ctrl-v no worky. Anyway, I actually had to walk for a good 10-15 seconds afterward before I could started slowly shuffling home.
I actually started feeling some decent fatigue in my legs today. I've been hitting it pretty hard lately so I'll take that as a good thing, but for next Thusday before the 10K I'll dial it back a bit to give myself a shot at a good time. |

Absolutely perfect weather - 40 degrees at the start, warmed up to 50 by the end, and less than 5 mph wind! My new long-run strategy: start slow and get faster. I played a little game trying to improve each mile a few seconds from the previous one. By the end I was getting pretty good at it by just staying close to what I wanted for most of the mile, then fine-tuning the last 0.1 or so. Garmins are fun.
Splits were 8:45, 8:43, 8:40, 8:37, 9:02, 8:33, 8:31, 8:29, 8:27, 8:21, 8:06, 7:52, 6:48, 0:55 (7:47 pace for 0.12). Overall pace 8:22. 1:49:53 total.
I got basically the same overall pace as last week but this run was fun and I felt great the whole time. Last week I felt like crap for the last 6 miles. In mile 5, I dropped my cell phone trying to grab a Gu so that's the reason for the 9:02. It broke into about 3 pieces and I had to fumble around forever trying to get everything back in its pouch - stupid fuel belt. I was pretty annoyed that it ruined my little game. In the last mile I was just trying to go a smooth tempo pace but I kept noticing the pace drop - it really felt great so I decided to murder the last third of a mile or so and got a great 1-mile split (6:48) for me, especially given that it was mile 13. Then jogged in the stub to make it about a HM.
This run was pure enjoyment - I know I'll probably never get weather like that again but I'm hoping that I can have that much fun in windier conditions as long as I take it easy at first like I did today. In other words hopefully the strategy, not the conditions, made it fun. By the way, thanks for the advice last week, everyone. I also feel 100% better physically after today's run versus last week where I limped around all day. Ok, enough words.

I woke up to howling wind again, this time supposedly 20-30 mph from the south. It definitely felt every bit of that. I decided against the tempo since I didn't feel like running a third of it against the wind. I went with a plan to do 6 x 800s at 3:30 pace thinking it would be do-able and I'd only have to fight the wind 100m at a time (the track runs north/south). I planned an easy 400 between each.
Did 2 miles warmup to the track in about 8:40 pace. Then started my first 800. I noted the first tailwind 200 was about a 48, and felt easy since the wind was practically carrying me. The next 200 into the wall of wind was a 57 and I barely arrived at the 400 on pace (1:45). So that's how it was gonna be... I increased my effort a bit and finished the first one in 3:24. From there it got worse. Next was a 3:27, then a 3:31 after which I felt like I needed to walk, and did so for about 5 seconds. I shuffled my easy 400 and jogged right out of the field! I was done, and figured I'd just do an easy loop around the university instead. I saw the girls track team as I left (they were noticeably absent from the track for the first time this morning). They were doing their intervals on the east/west path that goes around the school. That made me feel a little better, that they didn't feel like dealing with that headwind either. But I still regretted not slogging through the last 3 800s, even if I had to do them at 3:40 or 3:50.
On the way home I decided to do a HMGP mile for mile 7 and got a huge side cramp halfway...come on. I almost never get those, but this one was especially debilitating. Fought through it and managed to eke out a 7:52 after which my legs were heavy and full of acid. Come on, really? Managed a 9:15 mile to close it out. What a day. 8 miserable miles in 1:07. I guess some days you just don't have it... |

The wind was down today so I had to take advantage. Plan was 2 warmup, 3 @ 10KGP (7:30), 1 cooldown. I won't have the Garmin at the 10K on Sunday (my wife is using it) so I practiced trying to hit 7:30 by feel, only looking at my watch after each mile. I assume they will have mile markers at the race (it's a big one). Splits were 8:20, 8:32, 7:18, 7:07, 7:20, 8:15. Average 7:48.
Pretty happy with it. It was a relief to see that first 7:18 - I was dreading that it would say 8:00 when I finally looked. The 7:07 was on a downhill mile that usually goes 10 seconds faster and the 7:20 was on a slight uphill. My honest assessment is that I could've definitely done another 1.5 or so at that effort but 3.2 more would be iffy. The good news is I can easily hit my goal of 47 with 7:30/mile so if I can stay controlled in the first couple of miles on Sunday I should be fine. Hopefully this race-day magic I've been hearing about will take care of the rest. |

Pretty good weather for this one - 60 degrees, almost no wind and overcast. It was pretty humid and drizzling a bit but no impact to my race.
I lined up in the middle of my designated colored group - they did a good job keeping everyone with their own bib colors. There were about 8,000 in the timed division, and the announcer said 20,000 runners/walkers overall which seemed unreal but maybe so. My wife used the Garmin and I don't have a memory on my watch but the splits were mostly all easy to remember.
Mile 1 - 7:15. The first 2.5 miles were very hilly, and generally uphill. Bigger hills than I'm used to. I thought I was taking it easy here but thought that was a pretty realistic pace.
Mile 2 - 6:45. Whoops. Another uphill mile and I was wondering why I was gassed already. I couldn't believe I had 4 more miles based on the pain. Then I saw the mile 2 marker and I was at 14:00 exactly - now it makes sense. Garmin would've helped there, but I'm obviously WAY too dependent on it for pacing
Mile 3 - 7:45. My worst mile, and the first part of it had a horrific uphill climb. It barely felt like I was moving and people were passing me like crazy. At this point I thought I had porked the whole race again and even thought of how I'd word this failure on the blog. Still, when I hit the mile 3 marker at 21:45, I knew I was near the highest point on the course and was still on a great pace so I got kind of a second wind.
Mile 4 - 7:15. Mostly a gentle downhill. Started feeling good again, and hit the mile 4 marker at 29:00 exactly - see, easy to remember splits.
Mile 5 - 7:23. Started to push too early because I knew I had a shot at 45. Nope, not today. I started really dying aerobically in the middle of this mile.
Mile 6 - 7:30-ish. Making weird noises now. It felt like when I was on the 7th grade swim team and it was Water Polo Friday and the 8th graders spent the whole game trying to dunk/drown us instead of scoring goals. I was gasping for air just like that. My brain was scrambled enough that I thought I just ran an 8:30 mile instead of 7:30.
Last bit - 1:30-ish. I really really tried to sprint here but I felt like an old lady in the fast lane as people were whizzing by me on both sides. My limbs were flailing, probably in a hilarous way to everyone but me.
Anyway, 45:25 is a great time for me. Could I have run smarter? Yeah, but I really can't argue with the results. I'm really looking forward to this half marathon where we won't have the kids. I love 'em but it'll be nice to be able to relax and get some good sleep and enjoy the time with my wife. She was reduced to walking for a bit this time, after that big hill in mile 3 so no PR for her today but she's still in good spirits about the half. It'll be the first for both of us - guaranteed PRs! |

Yet another day off. I know I had a race but not running on 2 of the last 3 days actually makes me uncomfortable now...weird.

| My legs are still a bit sore from the race. I'm almost certain it's due to the hills from the race - I'm just not used to them. I really should do hill training one day. I decided to forego Tempo Tuesday and did 3 middle miles at HMGP instead. They ended up being in the high 7:40s and the warmup and cooldown ended up being in the 8:10s. The average for the run was 8:01. So the fact that the "easy" miles are starting to come down closer to 8:00 pace is a good sign, I think. This run was done later in the morning though, so that could be the difference too. |

This morning looked ok, so I went for my last long run before the race. Temperature in the low 60s and really humid. It reminded me of a Houston morning (sorry Flatlander). Winds were only 5-10 mph from the east. I actually looked forward to the headwind parts for some cooling breeze.
I took the advice y'all gave me and my goal was 10 easy miles, then 3 @ HMGP (sub-8) followed by one at 10K pace (sub-7:20).
10 easy miles: 8:35 average. Then 7:50, 7:46, 7:41, 7:13. I passed the HM point in 1:49-something again and finished the run with an 8:18 average.
I know I won't have that kind of energy at the end of the actual race but it sure felt nice today. No hint of a bonk or running out of fuel, so I think those couple of long runs that I had where I ran out of gas taught my body to make up for it. As long as I take a few Gu's and drink gatorade there shouldn't be any issues there. Just gotta survive aerobically now, which means NOT STARTING TOO FAST. |

| 5 recovery miles - 8:35 pace. It was raining today but it was still more enjoyable than the TM would've been so I put on some old shoes and hit the road. The only annoying part was the 18-wheelers coming down the highway and the 60 mph blast of water and dirt they threw at me; I could never quite avoid it, even at the extreme end of the shoulder. I almost crossed to run with traffic but I figured getting hit by a car from behind would've been a little worse than that. |

My left hip flexor has been weird this week - when I sit down for awhile and then get up, it has weird twinges until I walk around for a minute. When I start running it's completely fine after 30 seconds - 1 minute of jogging but very awkward until then. Anyway, because of that I decided to go easy today and just do a couple at goal pace.
But it was one of those days where you just keep noticing the pace drop, feeling great, and don't want to slow down. Oh well - here's what ended up happening: 8:42, 8:11, 8:02, 7:50, 7:37, 7:33, 7:28, 6:47. Average mile - 7:46. I really only sped up purposefully on the last half mile to get the sub-7, the rest is just what the legs wanted to do. My breathing was nice and easy, too ('til the last 0.5), which I'll take as a promising sign. Hip isn't any worse either, probably just something to keep an eye on.
If I end up running the race next weekend without the Garmin again, I really gotta watch out for this tendency and reel it back if I see anything below 7:40 or so early on.

6 @ 7:57 pace. Legs and lungs felt like it was 8:20s. Promising...
Less-than-promising is my stupid hip. It stops hurting when I run or sit down. Walking around, it acts weird. I have no idea, even with all my Googling, what it is. Anything from hip flexor strain, to IT band, to snapping hip (it only snaps in the morning a couple times). Anyway, whatever it is, it feels better after a minute of walking or jogging. Also found out it goes away with ibuprofen. So I won't worry about it for the race - probably just paranoia at this point. |

Weather is looking pretty decent for OKC. Maybe a 10-12 mph wind but nice temperature, and it's looking like it may even be a crosswind for most of the course. If my hip will just continue to do ok once I get it moving, that 1:45 should be mine... |

8:04 average pace, most of it begrudgingly. The last 4 or so were HMP but it took a lot more effort today in the early-morning hours. Finally felt like running around mile 5.
With the race at 6:30 on Sunday morning, I've decided I'll wake up early, at 4:30 or so, to trick my body into thinking it's 8:30 at racetime. Might even do that Saturday morning too so I'm nice and tired Saturday evening. Faster paces seem to come so much easier after I've been up a couple hours and my rhythms are more in sync.
No real change in my hip. Almost thinking it's my upper thigh now but I can't find any good info either way. Oh well, like I said - no pain once it gets warmed up. Will figure it out after the race.
Wind forecast for OKC keeps increasing. Pretty sure it'll be in the teens now but still WNW means mostly crosswind for the course. |

The 5K mile ended up being 6:32, then followed it up with a 7:52 HM mile (7:57 avg pace for the entire run). I'm pretty sure I oversped the 5K pace but it felt really smooth and relaxed - it also dropped in elevation 40 ft or so, but hey I'm trying to build my confidence here. By the end of the fast mile I knew it probably wan't 5K pace, more like 2-mile pace but whatever, still felt really great. Takin' it easy the rest of the week. |

5 @ 8:16 pace. Middle mile was a blind race pace mile (not looking at Garmin) at 7:54, so I think I'll be fine without GPS.
Wind forecast looks a little more reasonable now for OKC - maybe 10-12 mph at racetime. It looks like it might work out to be a headwind on the first half which has some downhill and a tailwind on the second half which has 3 tough uphill miles (9, 10 and 11). I think that's probably the ideal wind direction. |

Wind forecast for racetime hours in OKC -- NW @ 14 mph, so a definite headwind on the first half of the race. We'll see what happens but I'll try not to get bent out of shape over 8:00+ miles into the wind and just try to make it up later.

I had a near-perfect race today! The winds were saying 17 gusting to 24 before we left the hotel but they did not feel that tough most of the time. Temperature was perfect. I wanted to get in a half-mile warmup for my hip but we didn't have time after waiting in lines for the PoP and gear check. Figured it was a 13-mile race anyway so I'd get my warmup. Ran without Garmin but I have a good idea of most splits.
Miles 1-2 - 7:55 pace. Nice and slow. I was getting stuck behind people but went with the flow and it helped keep me at warmup pace. I bumped into the 1:45 pace group in mile 2 and ran with them for a few minutes but it was too comfortable so I sped up.
3,4 - 7:25, 7:45. Sped up too much, then found a nice pace. 31:00 exactly at the 4 mile mark, so 7:45 pace so far.
5,6 - ~7:30 pace. Just felt great here, and I was right around 2 minutes ahead of the invisible 8-minute pace runner at the 6-mile mark. Crossed the 10K at 47:50. The results say 46-something but they're all off a minute (Danielle's showed a minute fast too). Anyway I was happy I had banked 2 minutes already.
7,8,9,10 - ~7:45 pace. We turned around mile 8-ish as the marathon people kept plodding along into the wind. I was happy to turn. This is the stretch with the 1% uphill for about 3 miles straight but the headwind turned into a tailwind so it kind of evened it out. I was at 1:17:00 exactly at the 10 mile mark. With 5K left, I saw that a 23:00 would really make things interesting so I started pushing, though I knew that was asking a lot at this point.
Last 5K - 23:04 (7:26 pace)! I don't remember the individual mile splits but they were a lot faster than I had been going. Of course I'm left wondering if I could've sprinted it out earlier to get those last 5 seconds and the sub-1:40, but right now I'm still happy about the 1:40.
Really pumped that I ran a smart race and I don't think I could've gone any faster or tried any harder (well, maybe 5 seconds...dummy). A month ago, I thought 1:45 was way out of reach! Thanks fellow FRB'ers - I actually thought about y'all as I passed the 1:45 pace group at mile 2 so who knows if I would've done that if no one suggested I could go faster. Just another example of how helpful this blog is, and the people that make it work.
Ok, next HM will be October, most likely so plenty of time to improve. Then my first marathon in January! Lots of miles to do until then. |

EZ 4 - 8:11 pace.
My legs aren't sore at all, probably because the OKC course was a lot less hilly than my 10K, but my hip is slightly worse - it took a quarter mile of awkward shuffling to warm it up this time (instead of the usual 30 seconds or so). I think whatever the issue is, the root problem is muscle imbalance/weakness so I'll work on that right away and do my best to go easy on it running-wise but that never seems to happen. |

Sigh...went to the pool today at the gym on base. Did a mile in 4 x 400m with a minute rest between each 400. The whole thing took 28 minutes; I can remember doing a mile in 18 minutes in high school. I guess 13 years of not swimming makes you slower. Finished with 2 x 50m sprint in 38 each to get the heart rate going. I had to ask a couple of pool/gym employees to make sure the pool was meters and not yards (a lot of short-course pools in the U.S. tend to be yards). Thankfully it was meters...good ol' military sticks to what they know I guess.
There was zero impact to my bad hip in the pool, so maybe I'll swim every other day and try the...sigh...elliptical machine if I can figure it out tomorrow. I see the doctor on Thursday morning. |

The doctor visit went about like you would think - he did a few tests and concluded it was the hip flexor and didn't want to do any imaging on it, then wrote a rx for aleve or something like it and told me to not run for a few weeks. He seemed sure, but I will keep the sfx possibility in my mind, especially since the article I read said that FNSFs are misdiagnosed as hip flexor problems all the time, but you need an MRI to tell. I'm not ready to run yet anyway but I'll be taking no less than another week off, probably more. My plan is to wait until I can't feel it anymore while walking, then test it jogging on the treadmill a little at a time. I don't want to go backwards if it is a sfx. He also suggested physical therapy at the wellness center for exercises but I think the elliptical is taking care of that just fine.
Swam a mile (1600m) today in ~27 minutes, so a little better. I did a progressive effort for the last 300m or so. Then 2 x 50m sprints in 38 and 37. I wish the pool was yards since that's what I remember from HS. I can recall doing 50yd sprint repeats from the wall consistently in 26 each back in the day which would be about 29 seconds in meters. So that's how slow I've gotten. Oh well, the pool is closed all next week anyway, then hopefully I'm close to being able to run a little. |

I'm sure I was doing the machine all wrong and favoring my hip because it's my left calf; I probably was unconsciously making it do all the work. I don't really have time for anything today anyway so I'll try maybe the stationaly bike, cycle, whatever it's called on Monday. Have a nice weekend all! |

More good news yesterday - my marathon plans are on hold and Houston is out. I'm being deployed again, this time to beautiful sunny Iraq. Leave in July, back in January or early Feb. Here we go again... Not sure if I'll be able to keep up consistent training but I think I will still be able to run some, depending on where I go. Either way, Houston in January is out, so maybe I can do OKC in April 2011. I'm pretty sure I'll still be able to get on the blog overseas, but we'll see.
I think my hip is getting a lot better so I might try an easy mile on the TM toward the end of next week. |

| Did some walking and stretching, then tried a few minutes at 5 and 6 mph on the TM. Definitely better than last week by quite a bit, although I was on Aleve when I did it this time. Even so, I felt it there so I'll wait to try again Wednesday w/o the nsaid. I really can't rush it now because I have to be healthy for a physical readiness test next month. |

| 30 minutes on the bike at the gym. It was easier to figure out than the elliptical, apparently you just sit there and pedal. Anyway I increased the resistance and pedaled fast until it was hard to do - I just can't make myself spend more than 30 minutes on these machines though. |

Barely felt my hip all day (without nsaids) so after work I walked bit, stretched, and hit the TM. Slowly increased to 6 mph the first quarter-mile, then ran the second quarter mile at 7 mph (about my old easy-run speed). I felt the injury there, but wouldn't really classify it as pain, just a tightness or something. Maybe I'll run a full mile on Friday.
I just wish I knew if I'm supposed to wait until there's zero indication of an injury, or if a little tweakiness is ok. The doctor, after his 5-minute diagnosis, said take a "few" weeks off running. Well, if I count the week before I saw him which I sat out, then the week after I saw him, I'm at 2 weeks of not running; 2 is a few.
I did 25 minutes on the elliptical after the TM test. |

5 and 6 mph on the treadmill - I definitely could have kept going but called it quits after the 3rd lap because I perceived the hip soreness getting slightly worse as I went. I wouldn't say it hurts at all, just a dull soreness when running and after I'm done. After my race a few weeks ago, there was actual pain that made me limp/hobble so this is better. Still, seems ever so slightly better than Wednesday's run. I'll give it total rest this weekend and play it by feel on Monday. |

Weird injury - my hip has actually been more sore on the side the past couple days so I didn't hold out much hope for today's TM run but it went ok. At first I didn't feel it at all but the soreness crept in after a few minutes. Now it really feels like a muscle or tendon and it's even a little tender to the touch for the first time; before, I could never touch the pain if that makes any sense. So I don't know if it's just healing in different places or what, it's just weird.
But, I think it felt a little better than Friday...slow progress, but progress nonetheless. |

| Never thought I would be excited about a 1.5 mile TM run that took 14 minutes, but I am. The hip was the best it has felt in a long time. It also got better as the jog progressed instead of worse. The left still felt different than the right so there is some healing left, but definite improvement this time. Just some mild soreness afterward which now, an hour later, is gone. I think I'll be running outside in a week or so. |

| I forgot my workout clothes today so couldn't go to the gym at work. So when I got home I went ahead and did a TM run - a full 2 miles this time in about 19 min. Toward the end I had a weird urge to just go 10mph as long as I could to make my lungs burn and feel some pain. I resisted... The run felt ok - about like yesterday, with my hip feeling better after a mile or so. Then I remembered that that's sort of how it was when this injury started, except the pain was stabbing before and just dull/sore now. That made me a bit nervous so I'll bike or swim Friday, take the weekend off, and my hip will have 3 full days off before I start up again. |

There's still some healing left to do in my bad hip, but I would have barely noticed the difference between the two if I wasn't hyper-aware of every twinge down there. Still got a bit of soreness right afterward but feels pretty strong now. Planning on 1 more TM run on Wednesday (3-4 miles) to make sure it recovered well from today, then I'll move back outside. |

So, no cardio yet again but soon it will not matter as long as tomorrow's TM run goes well because I'll be running again. From that point on I'll run outside but easy runs for as long as I can stand it, which we all know will not be long but I'll try. |

Nice to be running again, winds were low and it was about 70F. Ran 4.0 in 8:13 pace, which was probably too fast for injury recovery but felt good and easy at first. Then I saw how out-of-shape I'd gotten after 3 weeks. It felt like the me-from-3-months-ago. Hopefully you can regain fitness faster than it takes to build it up in the first place. Anyway, I'm thankful the injury seems to be behind me. I guess 3 weeks ago it wasn't this hot either, plus I had White Rabbit stuck in my head the whole time for some reason. That's a weird song to be running to. |

So I had to pay a little for it but they do have internet in the bunks here. I ran at 4pm and it was only 72 degrees, nice and overcast and a bit breezy. The elevation here is 4400 so about a half-mile higher than home but I didn't notice much of a difference while running. Anyway I think I ran everywhere I could, but it's a small camp; I called it good enough at 4.80 once it started sprinkling on me. 8:02 pace.
I might try to run in the morning but we have pretty early starts here and some other complicating factors so we'll see. |

The training I'm doing here involves a lot of running around, crawling, etc with heavy gear and equipment on so I can tell it's taking a bit of a toll on my hip each day. So I'm still running but am ready to call it quits if I feel it getting worse. As for my run...
8:11 avg pace. I sped up to HMP (7:38) for a mere half-mile to see what it was like. Oh man, it felt like 5K pace. I sure hope altitude at least has a little to do with that. Not that I expected to be in the same shape as I was for my race, but it was eye-opening nevertheless. It's too bad I can only find time to run in the evenings here; it's only 5 degrees cooler than the early mornings in Abilene. Thankfully, it's also overcast here all the time so still an improvement. |

Average pace was 8:15. |

Long day at work today but a thunderstorm came through afterward and the rest recharged me and made it nice and cool by the time I went out for my run. It ended up being a great evening for a run: upper 60s and breezy, but the breeze felt nice and cool.
Felt so great the first 3 miles so I couldn't stop myself from doing a short 2-mile tempo in mile 4 and 5. Those were 7:05 and 7:17. Avg pace was 7:51 for the entire 6. What a difference a day makes. Feels like I went from 50% of my pre-injury fitness to maybe 85% in one day.
No run tomorrow but there will be a lot of hiking up hills and stuff so a day off is probably a good thing. I think I'll make it another 5-run week since I'll be traveling back home all day Friday.
And, in other news, I finially finished my MBA. That's a big monkey off my back that's been there for 2+ years, I'm dun with edumacation for awhile. |

| Just happy to get in the miles today. I sort of set myself up for a bad one. After some decently strenuous activity in the field I had to eat and then run almost right afterward if I was going to get it in. Didn't have time to properly rehydrate from the field exercises. So I plodded/shuffled around until I got to 6. I'm not sure how, but I ended up with an 8:22 pace though I had to work pretty hard to get it (felt like 7:45 pace or so). Like I said, happy to just get in the miles. |

| My hip is still messed up, either from training last week or from coming back too fast. Either way, I'm sitting out until Tuesday, when I have a PFT (will have to run 1.5). So the goal now is to make it to that, then just stop running until my hip is better. Maybe a week, maybe a month. I just don't want to keep playing this game where it gets worse every time I try to run a decent mileage and then keep having to sit out. So in the meantime I'll make a half-hearted effort at some cardio. |

My PFT was today so I had to run, and it's not in me to take it easy and run the minimums so I ate a handful of ibuprofen and left for the gym.
I did the pushups and situps (I always max out situps but actually did not get max points for pushups this time; I usually do) then got in a quick warmup and ran the 1.5 miles on the indoor track since it was raining. I hate the indoor track because it's 3 laps for every quarter mile and you're almost constantly in a turn. Anyway, I knew I was out of shape but thought 10:00 might be possible (6:40 pace). I ran a 10:08 (laps 1:39, 1:43, 1:43, 1:45 [6:50 at the mile], 1:42, 1:36. So, maybe saved a little too much for the end but I did pretty good for the shape I was in. I think I'm about a 9:45 runner when in the shape I was in for my half-marathon.
My hip actually feels ok with the 800mg of nsaid working on it. We'll see about this afternoon. |

Guess that run yesterday didn't do any damage because my hip feels about the same as it did beforehand. Good to know it can handle 6:45 pace, because I don't think I'll need to go any faster than that for quite awhile. I feel like I could start running again now, but I'm going to be smarter this time and wait until there is no discomfort whatsoever (there would be a little now). No more starting and stopping!
Another bad news/good news item - my deployment keeps getting pushed up, so I have to leave sooner, but that also means I'll be back sooner - almost definitely in time for Houston so I will probably enter the lotto for it, as long as I know I can accomplish marathon training while in Iraq (pretty likely). |

My hip has been feeling just fine the last couple days, no noticeable symptoms. So I took a test run here in east TX (we're at my in-laws').
It was 77 degrees and 90% humidity at 6:30am (yuck). Ran 8:57 pace on the running trail here, getting slower each mile. Ugly run, but I never felt my hip act up. I can feel a difference when I stretch it, but that's it. Still planning on a day off tomorrow to ease back in. I kept my stride really short today which is a help, I think. Well, a help with the bad hip, not running fast but that's not the aim right now. Happy to be running. |

I tried running without a shirt to beat the heat a little this morning. I think it may have helped a little. Don't think I caused any major accidents by blinding oncoming traffic with my ghostly torso, but I did run into a cluster of gnats at some point. They stuck to me. |

Also, there was a nice headwind coming home which was nice. It was 78 degrees so the wind was like a fan, not an a/c, but still nice. We're in San Antonio, taking the kids to Sea World. Before we left this morning, I snuck out of the hotel for a run in the barrio. It was ok, 8:51 pace and even that was labored. I thought I was going to get lost at one point since I forgot what street I came from but then I saw the big Virgin Mary display in someone's lawn that I had passed earlier. Hail Mary, full of grace! This thing took up almost half the front yard, was enclosed in glass and then had bars around it, presumably so it wouldn't get vandalized. That, along with the numerous fat guys sitting on their porch giving me the evil eye made the hot humid run go by a little quicker.
Sea World was fun too, the girls made it through 8 hours in the heat at the park with no huge tantrums. |

Back in Abilene, I ran in the evening - it was 85 degrees but with the sun hidden behind clouds (possibly for the first time in the history of this town), and a perfect 10 mph breeze, it actually felt ok as I went shirtless again. Equivalent to a 75 degree, sunny, windless morning maybe. I ran an 8:10 average pace, so not bad at all. Afternoon and evening runs always go much better for me.
I think my hip injury (strain) is healed, I'm just gonna have to deal with tight hip flexors, I think. Weak butt muscles are a contributing factor to that and my injury, according to Dr. Internet. I've been able to lay with a baseball in certain spots and work out some stiffness along with lots of stretching. In the meantime, anyone have any favorite glute exercises? |

73 degrees, ran before the sun came up.
I want to start running a lot of 7:15 miles since that is my BQ pace. I'm realistically at least a couple years away from being able to hold that pace for a marathon but I figure it's 10K pace now, and maybe HM pace by the end of the year if I can keep running uninjured. So I set out to do just 2 today and failed already! I could tell by my out-of-breath warmup miles it wasn't my day, but I still gave it a go and started to lose my form around 1.2. The old me would've pushed through it but the new me now knows that running like that causes injuries. That, and I'm lazier. Anyway my stamina is clearly in the toilet after the injury layoff so back to the grind of easy miles for awhile. Overall pace 8:23 for the 6 miles. |

Didn't feel too bad considering the lack of sleep I've gotten the past few days. I guess I'll be makng friends with the cardio room; they can't cool it down quite enough, but it beats running outside for now. I only hope I can stomach longer distances on it - I think the 5 today was a record for me but I'd like to eventually do 7 or 8 a day until I can start running outside in a couple months. |

Felt brutal the whole time...I need to run outside - is it October yet? If I have the same problem on a different TM, I guess I'm gonna have to slow it down to get in the miles. I finaly had to hit stop and start it from scratch to make it hold speed. Now I'm pretty sure I just got a fast TM yesterday unless I was really having a bad day. Anyway I found out they have races here - a lot of them. Of course they all start around 5am because of the heat but there are plenty of 5 and 10Ks. I'm thinking about doing a 10K as just a training run, maybe a bit faster than my TM jogging pace. Out of curiosity I checked what the temp is tomorrow at 5am - it's 97F (ouch). So I'd be doing it less for the race aspect, and more just to say I did it. We'll see, I'm not committed to that idea either; plus it could be trumped by my work schedule on many days, so I'd have to get lucky that my dynamic work schedule pops out a late show on race day. |

I walked to the gym at 4pm today (it's a half mile from my room) and it was the hottest day since I've been here: 122 (in the shade) when I left. We have a thermometer sitting in the sun that said 136. It feels like when you open the oven to get out the food you cooked, and that blast of hot air hits you. Only with a little breeze it's constant.
On to the running: I did 3@8:41, 2@7:30 and 1@8:57. The last cool down mile was actually the hardest part as I never felt I caught my breath, though the 2-mile tempo got my lungs moving up and down pretty good as well. It was pretty tough getting through it on a TM for me. On the walk back, the wind had kicked up enough to get the sand and dust blowing so it was actually almost like shade, and a nice relief; I could barely see my shadow.
I signed up for a 10K on Friday morning at 5:30. Whether I will make it or not depends on my schedule; I won't know if I'm running it until Thursday. But it's free to sign up so why not? |

6 @ 8:34 avg. I found the treadmills that don't shut off after 30 minutes so I'm happy about that. It still sucks trying to get through 6 miles though. I just get so stuffy and hot. I'll probably keep it at 6 for a couple weeks, then try 7, and so on...
It's looking like Friday's 10K will be a no-go for me as I'll probably have to be at work before the race even starts. I think the stars would really have to align for me to get free one morning that happened to have a race, but I'm ok with that. Base building is what I need now anyway.
Tomorrow, I'll rest as this was my 4th day in a row. Next comes 5 days in a row, then 6, and I'll be back to running 6 days a week. Feeling pretty good about my plan and feeling good physically, so I will definitely be entering the lotto for Houston when it opens. |

She loves sending me all the stuff I forget to bring every deployment. |

Started at 6.8mph (8:49) and added 0.2 after each mile with the last at 7.8 (7:41). Average came out to 8:13. Changing things up a little (something different every mile) helps me get through the 6 TM miles easier, I think. Soon I will be up to 7...soon...
The Army guys at the gym (I'm at an Army camp) all seem to like to hop on the TM, sprint until they're red in the face for 10-15 minutes, then get off. I had like 3 of em use the TM to my right in the 50 or so minutes I was on. I think they probably like to show the slow Air Force guy how it's done - we have to wear PT clothes that represent our branch so I stick out a bit. |

Felt good again today - I definitely run hot and cold a lot lately and never know how I'll feel until a couple miles in. Maybe it's mental? Anyway AP was 8:10 today. Last mile was 7:10 (0.75@8.0mph and the last quarter-mile at 9.5mph). I figure I'll keep taking advantage of the good days with speed, and just chug slowly through the bad ones instead of planning out specific speed days like I did before (and then forcing things when it clearly wasn't my day). Maybe things will dampen out a bit after I get a solid base under me. |

Guess what, I ran on the treadmill today. I'm willing to run outside in mid-upper 80s in the morning but I have to be at work too early. You can't really run here before the sun comes up because nothing is really lighted; it's pitch black and I would definitely fall down a lot considering I'm already a clutz and don't know where I'm going anyway. The good news is I think I'll be changing jobs in a month or so and could show up a couple hours later, we'll see.
For my run I did 3.5 mile warmup @ 8:39 avg pace. Then a tempo, 2.5 miles @ 7:12 avg pace. The tempo was broken down into 1.5 @ 8.0mph; 0.75 @ 8.6mph; 0.25 @ 9.5mph. The whole run averaged to somewhere around 8:00 pace. Crunching the numbers, the last mile was 6:48. |

AP was 8:14 for this run. Started at 7 mph and started increasing it bit by bit after about 3 miles, out of boredom. Last mile @ 7:30 (which I'll arbitrarily log as "fast") included a quarter-mile with 3% incline.
Another 36-mile week in the bag, so I'll start sprinkling in some 7-milers next week. |

| Another impatient get-it-over-with, speed-it-up TM run, but 7 miles this time! I got bored with about 2 to go and started adding speed every half mile. The last mile came out to 6:58 thanks to a quarter mile finish at 10.1mph (5:56 pace). I have to admit that toying with the fast speeds like that is kind of fun. At some point I'll increase it too much and be flung backwards from the TM in a comical fashion but until then I'll keep playing with it. AP = 8:11. |

Kept it steady at 7.0mph (8:34) the whole time but to spice things up, I ran the last quarter of each mile uphill in increasing increments starting with 2% and finishing with 8%. The 8% was probably the hardest I've worked thus far. I liked that workout because my lungs had plenty of time to recover and I was ready to attack the steep inclines when it was time. Good one to do right before a day off, I think. It's flat as a pancake here, so when I start runing outside I might have to duck into the gym every once and awhile for some mill-hills. I'll give myself 1 fast mile for those last 4 quarters between 5% and 8%.
I actually have a chance to run in the early morning tomorrow but will opt out since it's time for my day off, and it's still going to be 93 degrees at sunrise. A bit unlucky, since we've been seeing lows in the upper-80s lately. Anyway...I wimped out, so what? |

86 degrees today...in the gym. I've noticed when the days get to around 120/90 for the high and low, the gym itself is in the mid 80s in the afternoon (there are thermometers everywhere). We had a stretch of days where it was around 110/85 and the gym was about 80. 4pm is just the best time to run with my schedule right now though. Today I lucked out and got a TM with the fan pointing in its general direction so it was ok.
I did a marathon-pace run, sorta, for 5 miles. I have no idea what my MP is. Based on my HM, most calculators say it's around 8:00/mile. So, figure I'll get a little faster by January and we'll call it 7:50 for now. Can always adjust it later.
I did 1 @ 8:34; 5 @ 7:53; and 1 @ 7:04. AP 7:52. I was pleased that mile 5 was just as easy as mile 1. As I go, I'll just keep doing more and more at MP and throw them into long runs. |

All the TMs here shut off after 1 hour as they do at most gyms. That's ok for 7 miles but, for me, not ok for 8. So, I went online and found the manual for the one I run on, and figured out the convoluted way to hack into the manager's configuration screen. From there, I was able to increase the max-time setting so that I could run 8 miles at once next week without it shutting down. I feel pretty good about my first computer hack job. |

| EZ 7 @ 8:30 avg. 87 degrees inside the stupid gym and all the TMs with the fan pointing at them were taken. Lungs felt like they were working way to hard as well, for the speeds I was going. I tried running with no boxers today; don't worry the PT shorts have a liner, so really I was doing the normal thing. Anyway, I didn't like it because the shorts got completely saturated and were dripping on my legs as I hit the last couple miles. I was leaving a trail of sweat dots on the gym floor as I left. Plus I had 1 little bean burrito at lunch today and it was quite the troublemaker. People kept using the TMs next to me so I didn't really want to let 'em fly - I usually do if there is a 1-TM buffer between me and the next person. Kind of had one annoying thing after another today. But no matter, got in the miles which is all I care about right now. |

They actually had sports on the TVs in front of the machines today (50 greatest baseball moments) so it helped a lot. Last time they had a show on about frumpy women getting a makeover which was not so helpful. Anyway, feeling pretty good about the run. | EZ 8 @ 8:34. Not so easy though, as I had a late lunch and had just eaten some nasty fish an hour prior. Should have known better. The TV in front of the TMs had Oprah on it - seriously. Now I hate Oprah as much as the next person but they had people on that had lost hundreds of pounds so I though maybe that could inspire me just a little. It was fine until a guy that had lost 500 pounds shed his shirt for the camera to reveal all his excess skin. Then I thought of the nasty fish I ate and how it still had skin on it too. The last few miles I struggled to keep it down and had nasty fish burps the whole time. |

| 8:00 AP - I planned to do 6.5 at MGP today but threw in the towel after 4. Then committed the big sin by not finishing the mileage for the day. Part of the problem was I had to work through lunch again, ate late, and this time waited 90 minutes before running. Still a little too close for me apparently, the way I stuff myself. I just felt my stomach expand and couldn't burp it out kind of like the fish run yesterday. Still, pretty weak on my part to quit - the big red STOP button was too enticing today. That's another thing I miss about running outside - I always set it up to where I had to finish the planned mileage or I wouldn't make it home (out and back). Maybe I'll do a few days of easy runs before I speed it up again...maybe. |

I decided to continue my weekly quarter-mile-sprint-to-failure test today. Did 7.75 miles at 8:27 AP, then 11.5 mph (5:13 pace) for the last quarter mile. Felt pretty much like 11 mph did last week, no issues. The TMs go up to 14 mph so I'm confident I will get flung off at some point, just hasn't happened yet. Next week, 12.0.
The exciting piece of news for the day was that Danielle and I were selected in the Houston lottery - so I will be doing a full marathon on January 30 and she's doing the half. It's now setting in that I haven't run more than 8 miles at once since my HM in April. Scary... |

It's supposed to be in the mid 90s around sunrise but I gotta suck it up and take what I can get. I'll just push my rest day back one and jog slowly since there will only be 12 hours separation between this run and tomorrow morning. I'm still hoping that I switch shifts at work in about a week so I'll be able to run in the mornings more often. It's still about 110 in the evenings so I'm not ready to take that on yet... |

| I did get to run outside this morning: 9:05 pace, felt like death. It was 88 degrees, so not terrible, but my pace was bad yet it felt almost like a tempo; I even cut it short. I'm hoping it has more to do with the fact that I just ran 12 hours ago, and not that I have somehow adapted to the TM and "learned" how to go faster on it. If it's the latter I might be in trouble. It wasn't a good sample though (short rest, 7th running day in a row, 1st morning run in 6 weeks, 1st outside run in 6 weeks, etc) so I won't draw conclusions yet, based just on that 1 run. |

Another outside run - it felt like a nice cool morning. I checked later and the airport tower (which is a couple miles away) was reporting 86, so I guess 86 is cool now.
I found out one loop around Lost Lake (I think that's what it's called) plus one loop of Z-lake, then back home gives me 8 miles. This run was a lot better - 8:20 AP. I definitely would not call it easy though. I think I pushed a little since the difficult 9:00 pace the other day scared me. By the end of this run I was definitely huffing and puffing. My upper quads were sore all day yesterday, so I'm pretty sure at this point that I run differently on the treadmill than outside. Either that, or the hard-surfaced roads make you work differently. Hopefully I will get used to it quickly and 8:20 will feel a lot easier than it did today. I'll definitely back off the pace a little until I get used to it.
Having said that, I will be stuck with the TM the next couple days since I have to be at work early. It's probably not a bad idea to ease my way outdoors anyway. |

It was nice running with other people, and it kept me going. Once we hit 8 miles (my max so far since April) I started dying and we all sort of split up around mile 9. 4:30 am, 90 F. Recovery miles, 9:03 AP. Even that felt a little tough at the end; this transition from TM to outside has not been kind to me. It's hard to believe that I ran 6-7 hard weeks on the TM and somehow got slower. Hopefully there is a payoff at some point.
On the plus side, I had been getting a little PF on my right foot. It had been getting slowly worse over the last month but never affected my running. Now after running a few days outside, it's pretty much gone, just like that. My hip also feels better than it has in awhile. Maybe it's the slower paces, but I thought it usually worked the opposite way (TM being better for injuries). |

I had one good sprint (the first) then 9 painful efforts watching Mike and Antonio from behind. I'm not smart enough to figure out the avg paces, but the points along the graph show everything from 3:52 pace at the beginning of the 1st one to 7:04 pace toward the end of #8. Guess that data isn't too useful, other than to show my inconsistency and maybe some sandbagging toward the end. Good workout for sure - Mike's a little sadistic I think, which is probably a good thing for running. |

Thankfully, a day off. Yesterday I used muscles that apparently have not been used since the 1990s because I am sore. Butt, hips and upper quads, in that order, are most sore.

86 F, 5:30am. I worked night shift last night but got off early enough to go do this race. 2.4 mile warmup jog to get there @ 8:47 pace. I was still sore but it wasn't really affecting me while running so I decided to actually race it.
My splits were 7:08, 7:06, 6:56, and the last .14 at a 6:15 pace. Mike was there, and he passed me right before mile 1, calling me a sandbagger again. He stayed about 5-10 seconds in front of me after he passed by, and I could never seem to quite catch up as he stayed the same distance in front. We both passed a lot of people toward the end.
Anyway, I improved my 5K time, soft as it was, by almost 30 seconds yet once again fell 5 seconds short of cracking a barrier, just like the HM I ran in April. There should be plenty more 5Ks here where I can improve further when the temps go down and where maybe I will have slept sometime in the past 24 hours. Stupid night shift.

| A bone-chilling 77F! Ran with Mike and Antonio at 4:30am. It felt so nice outside that I didn't complain when Antonio continually sped up in our "easy" run. AP was 8:00. Last full mile was 7:35, then the last 0.62 was at 6:50 pace and included a 50 foot climb up Signal Hill, where we stopped at the top. Walked back down and did a cooldown mile. |

4:30am, 81F. Did 10 miles today, all between 8:00 and 8:30. AP 8:16. I'm noticing I don't really catch my breath until mile 4 in the morning, but then it starts really getting smooth and easy and I have to hold back so as to keep it "easy." That's the improvement I've been waiting for, I think. It's how I felt right before I ran a good HM in April.
As I was turning on to the crazy bat stretch, a guy coming the other way (who had just run the gauntlet) told me not to look at them, they're crazy today. So I stared at the ground again and still had a couple fly right in front of my face. I guess if I ever get hit by one, I'll find an alternate route. |

84F, 4:30am. Today was hill sprints day (10 x 200m) with the running group. First, 3.5 warmup @ 8:39. The stats on my uphill sprints were 1.26 miles in 6:41 (5:19 avg pace) with walking recoveries back down the hill. Compared to the 5:27 avg pace from last week, a definite improvement. The long lost muscles I haven't used in 13 years must be waking up just a little. I still couldn't quite keep up with Mike but was closer. Shuffled home on marshmellow legs - 3.3 @ 9:11 pace.
On the way back to my base I landed funny and rolled my ankle. Managed to jog the last mile or two back but had to modify the way I was landing a bit, more heel to toe, to keep from aggravating it. I think it'll be ok for running though, we'll see. Doesn't hurt while walking normally. |

84F, 5am. The ankle was a non-issue, so I went ahead with a long run. First 9 miles were in the 8:30s and 8:40s. Last 4 were 8:11, 7:52, 7:35, 7:22. AP for the entire run was 8:20. Pretty happy with it, given the heat.
On my other foot, another painful spot has cropped up. The heel bone is tender and sore, mostly on the inside, not underneath where PF would be. I started feeling it on my run today and can even feel it walking a little. Hoping it's not a "Calcaneal Stress fracture" which is the closest thing I can match to it right now, although it's definitely runnable at the moment. I'm thinking if it was a stress fracture it would feel a lot worse. |

| No run today, thought I would wait and see if my heel got any better, and I think it did, a little. It's not as painful when I squeeze the heel bone (calcaneus) and I'm not feeling it while walking. Might go for an easy run in the morning after work; I'm on night shift permanently now which ensures I'm able to run in the morning lows without having to worry about getting to work late, which is nice. |

5am, 81F. I didn't really get any questions answered about my heel yet. It's now a little worse than it was before my run - pretty much regressed to Friday. Definitely runnable, but will I make a small injury into a big one by continuing? Who knows... We'll see how it feels in 24 hours, I guess, and evaluate it then. Run was 8:24 pace.
Update - 14 hours later it's much better, as good as it's felt in days. I took ibuprofen and elevated the foot end of my mattress and it is now only very slightly tender to the touch. Weird. But also makes me think it's not a stress fracture if quickly feels better like that. But I'm also pretty sure I don't know what I'm talking about. Either way I'm probably running in the morning. |

| 5am, 83F. 8:02 AP. It was dark for the first few miles and I started a bit too fast since I couldn't see my watch (except when it lit up each mile), then decided I didn't feel like slowing down. Last mile a 7:37 - HM pace - is my arbitrary "fast mile" threshold so I'll tally 1 fast mile. The Garmin 405 doesn't like getting sweat on it; if I don't lock the bezel by the 3rd mile, it starts going nuts (I guess sweat gets in there) and I can't manipulate it.
As far as my heel, I guess it was a little better today, if anything. Pain never exceeded a 3 or so and it's better than yesterday post-run. I took ibuprofen 7 hours beforehand so I don't think that would have been a factor in making it feel better. |

| Tried to do an easy run in the morning and couldn't - too much of a hobble and pain from my right foot. Knowing it gets worse as the run goes on, I called it off. I don't think it's a stress fracture since the impact on the ground doesn't hurt; it's right before I push off, when the angle from foot to shin is sharpest. More research led me toward tendonitis - posterior tibial tendonitis or anterior, depending on which random website I go by. Either way I'm supposed to rest it to fix it. Having said that, there is a 10k on Friday that I'd like to try so I might rest until then, warmup a few miles without NSAIDs to test it, them maybe run it. Sound dumb enough? |

| The last 2 mornings I've definitely felt like I could've run and the tendonitis, or whatever it is, is basically gone when I'm walking. So I'm gonna try a nice easy 2 miles (at the most) after work on Sat. morning. The ibuprofen and rest have been doing it good. We'll see how it goes! |

Zilch. I knew after the first few steps it probably wasn't gonna happen, but I went to a quarter mile to make sure. I guess having my foot feel good with ibuprofen while walking doesn't necessarily translate into ready-to-run. I walked straight to the gym after I realized I wouldn't be running and went at the elliptical pretty hard for 30 min; my legs were wobbly and shaking afterward. Good. That cheered me up a little. I'll go longer and slower, so to speak, next time but I had some frustration to take out this morning.
I see the doc on Monday and I doubt I'll be running the rest of the month, at least, based on the lack of progress after 5 days rest. Depending on when I can come back to running, I might try to switch to the half in January. I rerally don't want to enter my first marathon untrained. My wife and I are tentatively planning to do OKC in April anyway. But it's obviously too early to push the panic button yet; I'll continue to use the torture machines in the gym for now. |

40 min. on the elliptical. I can't last much longer on that machine - I'm sure I'm doing it all wrong but my back starts aching on it. I jogged a few yards on the way to the gym and my foot feels a little better, about like it felt on my last run - not comfortable, but runnable. Of course running on it when it feels like that leads to bad things. So I'll wait. The med clinic opens in about an hour so I'll go see what they have to say.
The Longhorns and the Texans both staying undefeated in tough games this weekend has made a lot of the hurt go away I think...mental and physical maybe.
**Update - I went to the "doctor's" office, but when I saw the lieutenant rank on the guy I knew I wouldn't be seeing an actual doctor. He did his best though. Anyway, didn't get my questions answered on which tendon, or what kind of remedies would prevent it (other than stretching, duh). He could really only speak in generalities and didn't have the knowledge that I needed. He did give me a rx NSAID though - meloxicam - so we'll see what that does. I looked it up and it seems legit, although it was invented for arthritis. We'll see what a week or two of that does. |

45 minutes on the elliptical this morning while MNF was on. So, yeah... 5 additional minutes.
After reading a little more about meloxicam I cut the dosage in half to 7.5 instead of 15mg which is usually reserved for people with crippling arthritis....sheez. It makes my foot feel a lot better, but I'd hate to re-injure it by running on pain that's being masked by NSAIDs. I jogged about 200m on the way to the gym and it felt like just a hotspot on my heel, but definitely still nagging there (of course that was within 24 hours of popping 15mg of meloxicam). I'm hoping to be able to get back into running by the start of October, which would give me almost 4 months to train before the marathon. Hopefully that's enough if I stay uninjured. |

Nothing yesterday (apathy) and this morning I jogged most of the way to the gym, probably 1/3 mile total and it felt really good. So, I'll do a full mile on the TM this morning unless it starts hurting. This when-to-start-running-again decision always torments me after each injury, trying to balance waiting long enough so the injury won't come back and waiting so long I'm out of shape again. I think it's time though...
Oh yeah, did the elliptical for 30 min this morning, high level of resistance though so my HR got up there a lot quicker. |

Jogged most of the way to the gym then did a 9:05 mile on the TM. Followed that up with 30 min. on the bike. I absent-mindedly picked a different bike (the kind with the real bike seat instead of the chair with a back that I'd used before) and my butt couldn't last any longer than 30 min. I actually felt violated afterward but I'll deal with those feelings another time.
More importantly, running felt pretty good. I don't like that I can tell a difference between the two feet, but it really is minor at this point. If it's tendonitis though, I won't know if I've won the war for awhile, I think. Up next is a 2-mile slow jog tomorrow morning as long as my foot doesn't regress at all as a result of the run today; I don't think it has so far. |

But, it didn't matter - my 2 miles went great. 8:24 pace was faster than I was shooting for but I don't think it hurt anything. No gym afterward, I just didn't feel like it. Hopefully I'm done with the gym now. Starting Monday, I'm gonna cut my NSAID in half again to ease off it. |

4:30am 84F. Two loops around Lost Lake, 8:05 AP (whoops). Can't seem to quiet down my legs, who have missed running; I intended to do the first week back at 9:00 pace but I don't think it's doing any damage at 8. I even missed the creepiness of running Lost Lake in the dark - the Arab guy wailing out morning prayer from the mosque loudspeakers on the other side of the wall, the bombed out buildings...feels like I'm in an Indiana Jones movie.
Injury-wise, I'm pretty happy. Feels like there's no pain where the tendon is; the only oddball thing is that I feel like maybe I'm unconsciously landing a little differently on my foot. The effect makes it feel like my right shoe has half the sole of the left and doesn't absorb as much. But I'm being picky, it's a minor thing to complain about.
Horrible football weekend though with Texas (NCAA) and Houston (NFL) losing. |

5am, 85F. 8:17 AP. I finally ran long enough to be able to tell that I lost a bit of cardio from the 2-week layoff, for sure. Hopefully it'll come back in a week or two. Some lower temperatures might be nice too, if I'm getting really greedy.
I'll take tomorrow off as a precautionary move for my foot, and to let some soreness from my hip flexors and quads subside. Same soreness I got when I switched from TM to outside running awhile back; just gotta get used to running again is all. |

5am, 82F. Ran a lot more evenly-paced today, 8:30 avg. No mile was more than 5 seconds off the average.
It took until the 5th mile today for that weird heel thing to crop up, where it feels like the bottom of my heel is taking a pounding - like there's not enough cushioning. Feels completely unrelated and unlike the injured tendon, but same foot. Gotta be landing differently or something...ah well, it'll work itself out.
I worked up a general plan of how my training will go for the marathon, mileage-wise, in Excel (nerd). I'll max out at a 20-mile long run, and do that 3 times; the first will come in early December. Max weekly mileage of 62 on the weeks where I do 20 (hope I make it). I think I'm just going to do easy runs and 1-2 tempos/week, no speed work except for the occasional 5K races they have here. Does that sound about right? |

5am, 80F. I looked up last year's temperatures to see when they were going to come down, and last year they had already had a few days with lows in the upper 60s. So I guess this year is just hot. This is clearly the work of global warming cooling warming climate disruption.
The run was good. 8:18 AP and less perceived effort than yesterday, so my legs and lungs are coming back to me.
My foot/ankle/heel/whatever felt a little better today too. It's like it's just weak around that area or something; maybe it needs to take a beating. I'm going to quit the anti-inflammatory now instead of finishing the 2-week course. Maybe that'll help it strengthen up. I was only taking a kid-size dose anyway. They gave me like 2 months worth of pills for some reason. If I get into trouble close to the marathon they can be my little lifesavers. |

Still pretty dusty though, my face felt like it was caked in a nice sand-sweat mixture. Not feeling it on the run either, sore legs + stomach cramps + sore foot + out of breath at mile 1... I cut it short and will take a day off tomorrow. 4 days in a row is pretty good for my first week back. Should be refreshed on Tuesday morning. Avg pace was 8:30. |

5am, 83F. EZ 5, then 2 at MGP (7:54, 7:55). 8:16 avg. My goal is a 3:30 marathon, even if that is a stretch right now. I will have to get way faster, but why not just train for it and see what happens. So 8:00 will be my goal pace.
My heel is still getting sore and I'm getting suspicious of the tendon again. I ordered some firm arch supports today to take some pressure off of what I believe is the injured tendon (posterior tibial). Most websites recommend arch supports for that problem and that info is backed up by what I've noticed in my runs - that if I use mostly the inside of the foot, which is natural for me the faster I go, I can feel it tugging a bit on what I think is that bad tendon. When I consciously use the outside, it tugs less but gives my foot a pounding. It seems right that some extra support in the arch would alleviate it, so I'll give it a try. |

5am, 72F!! Where did that cool air come from? My target was 8:30s today, but the temperature was so nice I just ran easy and let the splits fall where they may...an evenly-paced 8:09 avg. Coolest temps in months for me. I actually had more energy after this run than any of my previous runs since the layoff. Stiil, I will try to slow it down in the future until I start doing MP/tempo runs. There are a couple 5Ks this weekend; I think I will do at least one and get the sub-22 that I should've gotten awhile ago. There's one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Strategy will be to not accept anything slower than 6:59 for miles 1 and 2. The rest should take care of itself.
My new theory on my heel is that it isn't the tendon this time (although it was before). This is a good thing, I think. Now the discomfort comes when my foot hits the ground, and it's more the back of the heel, right below the heel bone. Calcaneal bursitis is the only thing my googling found that makes sense. Hopefully, it's just a bruise though - that is what it feels like. It's totally runnable, just feels like a hotspot back there, and really it depends how I land. I might never figure it out. I vow that this is my last entry complaining about it unless it gets too bad to run on. |

Think I will take a day off tomorrow, but not sure yet. I was going to take Saturday off but there are races Saturday and Sunday. Sunday's race has free t-shirts so I can't skip that one! |

5:30am, 73F. My strategy for this (to ensure sub-22) was to force myself to run the first 2 miles under 7:00, and it paid off to push the pace early; I finally got a 5K time I'm happy with. I jogged 2.55 miles to the starting line as warmup, then:
Mile 1 - 6:43. Surprisingly comfortable.
Mile 2 - 6:49. Kinda hawked the Garmin here to make sure I stuck to the strategy.
Mile 3 - 6:59. I really battled to keep it under 7. The pace would keep bleeding back into the 7s and I'd surge. Definitely struggling (gasping for air!) but it was awesome to look down and see 6-something when it beeped at the 3.0 mark (even if it was by a fraction of a second).
The last 0.13 was 49s (6:14 pace). Afterward I saw Antonio who now runs in the evenings (when it's well over 90 degrees); he beat me by a little over a minute. I slowly jogged 2.32 back home - coincidentally it worked out to exactly 8 miles for the day. |

5:15am, 71F. I was going to run Sunday morning, but my foot apparently didn't appreciate my all-out effort in the 5K. It hurt too much to even run on it. So, I dug out my stash of magic pills (meloxicam) and took one, went to bed, and when I woke up Sunday evening it felt pretty good again. So I ran an easy 8 today, 8:17 AP, and only felt a dull ache back there. I realize it was a drug-induced absence of pain but I will slowly wean myself again and hope for the best. I figure if I'm really not supposed to run on it, it'll hurt me bad enough even with an anti-inflammitory working on it. If I'm wrong then, ok, I learned a lesson the hard way. I'll take off every 3rd or 4th day for a "healing day" and my arch supports will hopefully be here within a week to help me out too.
Congrats to my wife Danielle who just PR'd in the half marathon on Sunday! |

These 2 dudes joined the trail about 100m behind me in mile 5 and were catching up so I had to speed up. I HAD to. Not sure why I'm not mature enough to just run my own pace, I'm just not. 5:15am, 73F. That sure was a nice 2 days in the low 60s last week, but I guess summer is back - it hit 100 yesterday afternoon. Still, I'll take low 70s any day.
Picked up the pace a little today, 7:56 avg. Last mile 7:32 to make sure the 8-minute guy lost for once. I was hoping 8:00 would feel like a nice long-sustainable cruising speed so that maybe in January I could do 26.2 miles at that pace. But it still gets the lungs/heart working a bit too much for now. Still got time to work on that though.
This was my first run on a half-dose of NSAID and my foot felt decent enough so I'll continue on half a pill for a few more days before trying to run without it. |

My arch supports finally came in the mail, but the instructions say not to use them for "athletics" until you've walked around in them for a few days. I did run up and down the street to test them and other than feeling like there's a bubble under my arch, they felt good. I'm definitely not positive that it's the right solution, but seems like they might help me out once I get used to them. |

5:15am, 73F. Plan was for 4 warmup, 3 @ 7:20 (new tempo pace), 1 cooldown.
The 4 warmup miles were @ 8:33 avg. I always see the exact same people on the first few miles around Lost Lake. My nemesis, Jingle Keys, was giving me a run for my money today. I can always hear him from about 50m away. Anyway, the tempo portion was 7:18, 7:17, 7:17. Then I cooled down with an 8:28. I haven't done much stamina work lately so this kicked my butt today; I would not have wanted to do another mile like that. Gotta get used to feeling the pain again!
I also wore my arch supports today. No issues with them. It was interesting though, the insert really felt like a big bubble under my right arch - the semi-injured foot (getting better and better by the way), but the left foot felt like the arch support wasn't even there most of the time. So maybe I really need them. Who knows. |

| 5:15am, 64F. 8:18 pace. Same course, same time of day, same pace as yesterday but half the effort. Gotta be the awesome temperature this morning, although I had the shoes I prefer today too. And there was a nice breeze that made it feel even cooler. I fought the urge to just rip off an 8-mile tempo, and held back since I'm planning on a 14-miler tomorrow. Should have nice temps for that too. It will tie my record for longest run ever, set about 6 months ago. |

| 5am, 64F. It went pretty good - AP was 8:19. First 8 were easy (averaged 8:32), then 8:21, 8:14, 8:09, 7:59, 7:49, 7:48. I was pretty spent after that. I should have been doing more long runs. The thought of running 12.2 more miles makes me want to puke all over my laptop. But I only have 1 laptop and I need it, so I'll try not to think about it. |

5:30am, 70F. Plan was 4 warmup, then 3-4 tempo miles (based on how I felt). My mistake was giving myself the option. But, I managed to push a little longer and do 3.5 tempo, so I can say I improved from last week's 3.0.
Easy 4 avg 8:29. Then, 7:18, 7:16, 7:14, 3:34. 7:15 AP for the tempo. Then a half-mile cooldown @ 8:50 pace.
I started to get sloppy with form, and my legs started that warm, "lactate-y" feeling (I knew exactly what you were talking about Flatlander) a half-mile later this time. So maybe some improvement. My target is 7:20 on these tempos, so it's weird that I panic when I see 7:20 on the watch and speed up. But if I could slow 'er down and average 7:20 I think that would help too.
I saw lows in the 50s on the forecast for next week. 50s! There were also these white puffy things in the sky today that I remember from back in the states. Forgot what they were called, but the weather is showing signs of changing at least. Summer is almost over. |

5:30am, 66F. Easy 8, 8:17 avg.
They were running a satellite race of the Marine Corps Marathon here this morning. Apparently I started my run 20-25 minutes after this race started and was unknowingly following its routing. The first water station I saw offered me some water, but I said, "no thanks, I'm not in the race." It was too dark to see I didn't have a bib. Then around mile 3, there was a guy clapping for me and pointing me in the direction of the race. I told him thanks, but that I wasn't in the race. Finally around mile 4 there was an aid station with about a dozen people hanging out. I overheard someone say something to the effect of "hey, here comes someone else, let's really cheer him on..." I was running all by my lonesome and had to have still been at least 10 min behind everyone else, so they were definitely pity-cheering. This time I just raised my hand up, gave a few fist pumps and a "woohoo" and kept going. Someone told me (kinda like you would tell a 4-year-old) "YOU are doing a GREAT job!" It made me feel good in a pitiful sort of way. Shortly after that I must have split off from the race route because I didn't receive anymore ill-gotten cheers. |

5:30am, 52F. With the crazy temperature drop, my plans quickly changed from easy run to tempo run. 4 ez, followed by 4 tempo.
4 warmup miles, 8:16 avg. 4 tempo miles, 7:07 avg (7:15, 7:16, 7:08, 6:49). Ahhh. Went ahead and emptied the tank on the last mile. At the end I was covered with snot and saliva and it felt great. 7:41 AP for all 8. I knew temperature was important but this is my proof, I guess.
My reward for suffering through the summer should be absolutely perfect running weather for marathon training these next 2 months. This really is the perfect winter running destination, low wind, temps should be 40s and 50s, flat terrain, only occasional mortar attacks. Looking forward to starting official marathon training next week! |

5am, 57F. New distance-PR, 15 miles. I did 10 easy, followed by 5 MGP.
10 easy averaged 8:29. For the 5 MGP(ish) I averaged 7:48 (individually they were 8:05, 7:47, 7:40, 7:45, 7:43). Overall 8:15 AP for all 15.
Nice and achy by the end, but my lungs/cardio felt great the whole time, even at the end. Gotta get my legs/joints/tendons used to taking a pounding, though. When I changed speeds to MP, the achiness actually went away for a few miles; guess different muscles were being used? What do I know..
Day off tomorrow, then start week 1 of Houston training. I've been doing 5 days a week this past month, but I'll be doing 6 runs starting next week. |

Nice temps, about 48F! I'm going to quit looking them up to post them since they're not affecting me anymore. From here on out, if the weather is anything but perfect, I'll be sure to complain.
Today starts official marathon training week 1, and I just did an easy 8, 8:15 AP. Tomorrow I'll tackle the first workout. Felt really strong this morning, and I'm loving that the old "easy run pace" is finally dropping. Seems like it's been 8:30-ish forever, no matter what kind of shape I was in. |

I'm doing "key workout 1" each week from a marathon training plan April gave me a link to. Today was 3 x 1.5 tempo with a half-mile active recovery in between. First I ran 5 miles warmup @ 8:23. Then the 1.5 mile repeats (goal < 11:00 which is 7:20 pace):
10:49 (7:13 pace)
4:03 recovery
10:48 (7:12 pace)
4:03 recovery
10:29 (6:59 pace)
4:16 recovery
Pretty hard effort by the last repeat. Felt like the end of my last 5K where I was struggling against the 7:00 guy. AP 7:51 for the 11 miles. |

Didn't really have a plan today. I ended up running the first 4 in the 8:10s and the next 4 in the 7:40s, followed by a cooldown mile. 8:02 AP. Felt sluggish and heavy-legged but probably got a decent workout anyway.
I'm thinking of changing up my plan and making my recovery runs shorter (and slower) to be fresher for these MP and tempo runs. So next week I'd do something like: 8, 11, 6, 10, 6, LR, rest...with the 8 and 6 milers being easy-paced. The 11 and 10 milers will have some faster stuff. I know a lot of people say it's better to get the consistent mileage though (like 8, 8, 8, 8, etc). Clearly I don't know what I'm doing...any thoughts? |

Easy 5 @ 8:36 pace. Should help me out for my 16-miler tomorrow, as my legs have felt tired and dead this week.
Last night I saw people lining up for something; sure enough it was to sign up for a race - there was a 10K this morning. So obviously I go get in line to sign up, but then realized that it might not be a good idea to replace a desperately-needed recovery run with an all-out 10K race right before a 16-miler (a distance I've never before reached). I almost had to give myself a Tonya Harding to the kneecaps to get out of that line, but I eventually left. Eyes on the prize SlowJoe, eyes on the prize.... There will be more races (at more conveinient times). Actually, there is yet another 5K on Sunday, so I'll be fresh for that after a rest day and can go after that sub-21 to scratch that itch. |

Another world-record distance PR, 16 miles. Overall 8:14 AP.
I did the first 10 easy (8:27 avg), then did the last 6 progressively (8:18, 8:15, 8:04, 7:52, 7:42, 7:01). Lots of energy at the end, which is good. My plan was to just run tempo pace for the last mile, but I checked my watch at 15.92 miles and it said 7:08. I put in a quick burst of speed but it was too late to get the sub-7 finish. The fact that I could tap into some pretty good speed at the end was a nice confidence boost.
I'll rest tomorrow, then maybe a 5K on Sunday...maybe. |

This race was for the Iraqi boy and girl scouts, and it came with a free t-shirt. My goal was to break 21:00, and I did by a couple minutes! Unfortunately the race was almost a quarter-mile short.
My splits were 6:34, 6:42, 5:44 for 0.87 (6:36 pace) for a time of 19:00 (6:37 average). I figure worst-case scenario I would've run that last quarter-mile in 1:45 and finished around 20:45, but what can ya do? I like the races up at Liberty (base just to the north) more because they go around a lake that happens to be about 5K and are always accurate. Still nice to know I CAN break 21 though!
It was neat to see the Iraqi kids because I haven't even seen a child in 4 months, the young ones were probably my oldest daugher's age. So a pretty good morning altogether. |

10 miles, 7:42 AP. I did this week's "key workout" today - 2 x 2 tempo with a half-mile recovery between sets.
First I did 5 miles @ 8:07 pace. Then,
7:13, 7:05
3:57 recovery
7:07, 6:58
4:06 recover / cool down
My brilliant idea was to first put in some decent mileage at faster-than-warm-up pace to make the tempo portion more challenging. And it worked, because I was truly miserable for the second set. Mission accomplished. |

Strange pain in the crook of my ankle (where top of foot meets shin) after yesterday's run, but not during the run. Some tendon I think. Ran an 18-miler today, which is 2 miles farther than I've ever run. 8:07 AP.
I didn't really confine myself to any pace; I just knew I wanted to run easy, with a few MP miles at the end. Well, the tendency to speed up as the miles drag on kind of took hold. Here are my splits - 8:28, 8:25, 8:29, 8:28, 8:18, 8:19, 8:22, 8:20, 8:21, 8:09, 8:09, 8:06, 8:04, 7:47, 7:44, 7:41, 7:38, 7:20. The last mile would've been faster but my keys fell out of my pocket with 0.2 to go and I had to backtrack a couple steps to get them That physically hurt.
I'd say my lungs never felt challenged until the last mile, maybe second-to-last. My limiting factor right now is my aching legs, and all the nagging minor injuries that intensify on long runs. I think I just don't have the long runs under my belt yet. I felt like Frankenstein on the last couple miles - almost bit the dust just trying to hop up a 4-inch curb in the last mile. Weak!
The other thing that makes me nervous is the tendon I mentioned yesterday showed up with a sharper, more localized pain on my foot in the last 4 or 5 miles and is killin' me now. It's that big tendon that goes from the shin muscle all the way toward the big toe. I got some ice from the dining facility after my run and was able to ice it a few times before it melted; I'm also gonna hit the ibuprofen hard to nip this one quickly. |

I broke out the anti-inflammatories out of paranoia. When I dorsiflex (new word I learned, means lifting your toes toward your shin) my ankle, that dang tendon really hurts (anterior tibial tendon - 2 more new words). I guess that motion is not required when running though, because I didn't feel it at all while running. So how did I hurt it then? I guess it's ok to run on it. I'm always wondering if the current injury in question will be the one that sidelines me and ends my marathon hopes. It was like this when training for my first half too, earlier this year. Always teetering on the brink of injury. Guess it comes with the territory... |

11 miles, 7:41 AP. I tried to run easy and got carried away on my pace again. The temperature dropped down to 50 this morning and it really felt good out there. I'll call this my workout for the week and really, really try to take it easy the rest of the week until my long run. Getting faster is too fun.
8:10, 8:04, 8:10, 8:05, 7:44, 7:46, 7:50, 7:31, 7:22, 6:59, 6:46.
Not much complaint from my foot. I don't think it's an overuse injury because it came on all at once and seems to be feeling a little better, I think. I stopped taking NSAIDs since I read they are no good for tendons. Hoping for the best... |

I'm starting to feel a bit beat up...everywhere (I won't bore anyone with the full list of problems), so next week will be an easy low-mileage week for sure, in an attempt to rest tight/sore muscles and heal the little nagging tendons, joints, etc. I want to get through this week and my 20-miler first though.
Maybe in hindsight it's a bit agressive to go from a total non-runner to 60-mile weeks in the span of a year or so but that's the kind of impatient dufus I am. |

| My foot stated hurting while just walking today, so I think it's time for a short break. Pushing out my first 20-miler tomorrow seems dumber and dumber the more I think about it. So my tentative plan for now is to take the rest of the week off and start running again on Sunday with an "easy" 40-mile week, which is probably still plenty of miles for me to keep improving with. Hopefully 3 days off plus a light week of running will do the trick, and not cause any loss of fitness. If I want to run a marathon I gotta get to the starting line... |

I don't know about my foot. Pretty much regressed to where it was before. It's basically fine when I run on it. It hurts 45 minutes to an hour later. Maybe that's not a problem? Nothing left to do now but ignore it unless it starts hurting during a run. Then see the doctor medical..guy and maybe they'll have magic pills again. No more mileage increases I think. |

| I cut this run short with foot pain. Afterward, I went to the clinic again and actually saw a doctor this time, who confirmed anterior tibial tendonitis. I think ideally he would like a couple weeks rest, but he took the position that I was probably going to run anyway and was behind me going for the marathon (or he at least accepted that this was what I was going to do, and would try to get me there). He gave me more anti-inflammatories and said I probably wouldn't do any major damage to the tendon but advised it wouldn't really heal until I stopped running. But I can run while on this meloxicam stuff, so I think I will give it a go in a couple days to see if the medicine has dulled the pain. Apparently it will hurt bad enough, even with the anti-inflammatories in my system, to let me know if/when something is really wrong. Anyway, the whole visit made me feel a lot better and now I have a gameplan...just hope I can get through the next 2 months without any major setbacks. There's plenty of time to rest starting January 31. |

7:57 avg pace. Tried to go slow. My legs were super-fresh from not running much lately, and the temperature was 48F (as low as I've ever seen it here), so given all that I think I did pretty good at reining myself in. 8:00 pace felt practically comatose today; I'm guessing this is what it feels like to be tapered for a race. Hopefully I can re-create the feeling in a couple of months.
Tendonitis only made a short appearance toward the end of the run, but felt pretty non-threatening and went away after about 5 minutes. |

7:48 avg. I had a 3 x 2 MP run planned for this week, and I'm becoming confident the tendonitis will not be a factor so I decided to go ahead and do my last 6 at MP. 2 brisk warmup miles, then 7:41, 7:43, 7:42, 7:42, 7:38, 7:42. Nice and steady, felt great.
I've decided to target 7:45 for MP runs. My marathon goal is still 3:30 because I'm betting on an ugly finish (first marathon and all), but I think 7:45 makes sense for a starting pace...or at least a good training pace, even if I decide to play it more conservatively for the actual race. McMillan says 7:44 pace based on my conservative projection of the not-quite-5K race a few weeks ago so why not.
Tendonitis made the same brief appearance today then went away. I start weaning myself from the NSAID on Monday. |

So when we made a turn and I hit a straightaway I wasted him with a little pickup doing the 0.38 stretch in 2:12 (5:47 pace). 2 days in a row, same thing happened. This time it was WAY more blatent. I turn on to Z-lake, where I like to run (as does everyone) about 150m behind an Army dude. My plan today was all easy miles and I was at maybe an 8:20 pace. Very slowly I caught up to Army dude who I'm guessing was running 8:30s. Now when I pass someone on the trail I like to do it quickly, like ripping off a band-aid, so I sped up to maybe 7:45 pace just to get around him. Well you can guess what happened. He's now running 7:45 pace right next to me. Sped it up to a nice tempo pace to seal the deal and, nope, he's stride for stride with me, shoulder to shoulder. Ok, maybe he just wants to run with me. I look over at him with kind of a half smile, stare at him for a good 4-5 seconds and he looks straight ahead, focused. "Mornin'" I say. No response at all. Weird, right? Well, now any chance of me doing the mature thing and returning to a jog have gone right out the window. Sped up to about a 5K pace. He stays right next to me. Finally I put on an all-out burst of speed for 10-15 seconds and he dropped back quickly, after the first second or two. I kept a good tempo pace for the next mile or so to dissuade any re-attacks. Looked back after a mile and he was gone. It was annoying at the time but for the rest of the run I felt very pleased with myself for my win, and did not feel bad about giving into competitiveness. I think I did the right thing. |

8:02 average, 2:40:39. My longest run ever, first 20-miler, is in the books.
I'm not sure why I make statements like "My goal is to just get slowly through this one, no fancy progressive finish or MP stuff" anymore. Who could've predicted I would deviate from that? Hmmm... I got off work pretty late this morning, so I got a late start, chugged an energy drink and took a Gu before I even started. The Gu was because I hadn't eaten in 6-7 hours (meant to start my run 2 hours earlier). So I started off at a fast pace due to all the caffeine probably, then didn't want to slow down. Worked out though.
First 10: 8:17, 8:16, 8:16, 8:16, 8:17, 8:15, 8:13, 8:12, 8:13, 8:14
Last 10: 8:11, 8:09, 8:04, 8:11, 8:00, 7:56, 7:47, 7:42, 7:33, 6:37
Gu at 8, Gu at 15, 60oz of gatorade throughout. The Gu/gatorade combo does not bother my stomach at all so I will stick with it and take all the carbs I can get. I felt ridiculously good after 19 so I made a last-second decision to just empty the tank and see how much was left. Quite a bit apparently, that's a 5K mile for me. Granted I probably will now need double the recovery time because of that last mile, but it was worth it. Just for grins, I added up my last 13.1 miles and it came to 1:43:38, about a 7:55 pace.
I can tell that I'm gonna be sore for awhile based on the difficulty with steps. The cardio is there, the legs are not. Tendonitis seems pretty subdued (still taking nsaid) but I'll get a better idea tomorrow. |

It continued to rain most of the past 24 hours and it was a mess outside this morning. What kind of a desert is this anyway? Also, all vehicles on the road were collaborating with each other to force me into every mud puddle on base. By the second mile my shoes were fully waterlogged.
I slogged through my planned workout anyway, which was 6 easy, 6 MP. 6 easy miles were @ 8:17 avg, then did the MP(ish) miles @ 7:35 avg. 7:56 AP for the run. The heavy shoes notwithstanding, it felt pretty comfortable. |

7:33 avg.
I hadn't done a sustained tempo in 4 weeks so I figured it was about that time. Plan was 6 easy, then 5 fast - the first time I've tried to string together 5 tempo miles in a row. My target for the fast miles was 7:00-7:10.
6 easy miles: 8:04 avg pace. I kinda get psyched up mentally before a tough workout and end up doing my warmup miles too fast, but oh well.
5 tempo miles: 6:54 avg! Splits were 7:05, 6:55, 6:51, 6:55, 6:45.
Pretty motivating workout for me, there have definitely been some fitness improvement spurts going on the past couple weeks. After backing off in tempo mile 1 to hit my target, I decided to let myself run whatever felt right after that. I hit that threshold point right around the end of mile 3 and it went from feeling great to feeling tough in about a 60-second span. I pushed through the weakening legs though, to hold the pace for the last 2 uncomfortable miles. Mental victory! That's the most important kind for a dummy like me. |

8:31 pace. Not sore from yesterday, which is good news.
Tomorrow I'm gonna do a test -- run a half marathon at marathon pace (7:45) and see how it feels. If it still feels nice and easy at the end, maybe I won't be nervous to start the actual marathon at that pace. |

Well, as an experiment the run failed but it was a lot of fun. I was trying to run it at 7:45 pace as a dry run for the marathon but ended up progessively getting faster. After awhile I quit fighting it and just had fun with the run.
AP 7:26, 1:37:27 (unofficial PR). Splits: 7:37, 7:34, 7:40, 7:32, 7:28, 7:27, 7:26, 7:24, 7:22, 7:23, 7:15, 7:21, 7:15, 0:44.
Really, it probably ended up being close to HM race pace. If I was running it as an actual race from the beginning, I doubt it would've been a lot faster -- maybe a couple minutes, tops. I didn't finish the last couple miles like I would've in a race, so as to have a short recovery, but the effort was pretty solid.
I think I still accomplished part of what I set out to do today because I don't think 7:45 is a crazy pace to start at for the race, seems very doable now. |

Ran 6 easy in my trainers (8:10 pace). Then put on my new shoes - early Christmas present! They are "flat shoes" that weigh about half of what my trainers do. Just kinda messed around for a couple miles, and they felt pretty darn good. The highlight was a little 200m acceleration to start a mile in 36 sec.

I'm testing out photobucket - thanks for the tutorial on posting pictures Burt! Will have some actual pictures of this place to post tomorrow... |

Plan was for 5 warmup, then a 3 x 2 tempo, targeting 6:59, with a half-mile recovery between each 2-mile set. Total fail today. I think it's a tough but doable workout for me as long as I'm having a good day; I just felt crappy today for some reason.
The 5-mile warmup felt terrible, even though it was slow. Just all out of breath for no reason. But I decided to give the tempo a try anyway. Kept looking at my watch expecting to see 6-something and would see 7:10 or so - which already felt terrible. I toughed through one set (6:57, 6:56) and it felt like the last set as opposed to the first. Anyway, I just shuffled around until I got to 10 and called it a day. Can't complain too much, I haven't had a bad run in awhile so I was probably overdue for one.
Here's a few pictures of a couple places I usually run over here.

This is Lost Lake which is a 2-mile loop. The fancy houses are where Saddam's cronies, generals, dignitaries, etc. would stay when they came to Baghdad.

Here's a close-up of one of those houses that took a bomb through the roof in 03. Too bad, so sad.

Canal I run along every morning.

Right on the other side of the wall is a mosque. They broadcast the morning prayer every day so loud that I don't even need to run with music. There are loudspeakers on those minarets. It's a mix between a chant and a scream. Who knows what they are saying, but each word seems to take about 5 minutes. The guy has a terrible voice but he can hold his breath for a long time. |

8:15 pace.
This is my 3rd run in a row without anti-inflammatories - so far not too bad. I can feel the swelling slowly coming back along the tendon, but like the doctor said, that's to be expected until I can take a few weeks off to let it heal. If it starts messing with my running too much, I still have plenty of magic pills to douse the fire with.

Here you go Burt, this is me on the throne where I sit for my job...as the King of Iraq(unofficial title, crown pending). |

| Started the first few miles in the low 8's and progressed to a 7:16 finish - 7:49 AP. Felt way better than Monday; those little recovery runs I've been doing are actually doing their job pretty well. I definitely like alternating between short and long runs, versus running consistent daily mileage. |

7:54 average for this 20-miler -- 10 easy + 10 GMP (target 7:45).
First 10: 1:21:46 (8:11 AP).
Last 10: 1:16:20 (7:38 AP). Splits were 7:44, 7:41, 7:40, 7:44, 7:39, 7:40, 7:41, 7:38, 7:32, 7:22.
Pretty good run! It was technically a success but it definitely opened my eyes to how hard it is going to be to go 26.2 miles at GMP. Maybe too hard. My legs were really on fire (not in a good way) toward the end. Of course I went a little faster than goal pace, so that's some of it. Aerobically, it was ok; my lungs worked a little, but weren't complaining too much. This time my legs felt way worse than 2 weeks ago. The faster overall pace, maybe, and the fact that I didn't have anti-inflammatories in my system today probably contributed. I'm hoping I'll even be able to run in 2 days!
It is pretty important to me not to have a bad bonk/deathmarch to the finish so I am considering starting a bit more conservatively for the race. Actually enjoying this first marathon is a top priority.
Merry Christmas to all! |

Not sore at all from Friday, so a good recovery. Did 8:11 average today, the last mile ended up being GMP.
There's a contractor that I've seen around the past few months here who looks exactly like Santa - long white hair, long white beard, round belly, etc. Sure enough, I saw him Christmas morning in the dining facility and he had a Santa costume on. I thought for awhile it might actually be Santa but then as we were both leaving I saw him get into a little Mitsubishi truck. Clearly not a sleigh...imposter. |

Started at 7:58 and slowly progressed to a 7:28. Good effort but still comfortable, AP was 7:42.
Sorry, I didn't get into any fights to write about as I promised... but the guy serving the food in the breakfast line always shakes his head and laughs (and mutters something like 'whew') when I tell him all the stuff I want him to pile on the plate. I guess I eat a lot. Maybe I will fight him later. |

Treadmill miles! I planned to do 16 (outside) today but it rained all night and was going to continue all morning. It was also very windy, making it sideways rain. There is also a lot of dust in the air, making it sideways mud rain. Anyway, I decided to try it on the TM.
I hacked into the manager's configuration like I used to do this summer and put it into marathon mode where it's not supposed to cut you off. After the first mile I was pouring sweat; somehow they managed to re-create the sweltering atmosphere from back in July and August when it was 120 degrees outside. I slogged away and my towel got soaked and useless pretty quickly. On the bright side there was a placard on each TM console that said "ATTENTION! DO NOT HOLD FOR THE CONSOLE!! IT WILL BREAK!" Guess they didn't translate it perfectly - for some reason that was funny to me and kept me entertained, albeit in decreasing amounts as the sweaty miles went by. When I got to 99 minutes, the treadmill shut off anyway, and I took that opportunity to quit. Even now I don't regret it. Pace averaged 8:10-ish. |
