Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Utah Valley Half Marathon, 1:27:35.

A week ago I did something to my back while moving chairs. I did not think it was a big deal since I was able to run more or less normally with only minor pain. However, when we got to the start of the race, it got worse. I was not sure if I would be able to start. However, I did some stretching and massage, and loosened it up enough to get going. The pace had to be slower. I ran the first mile in 6:58, then was able to speed up a bit to as fast as 6:23, then slowed down to around 6:40 range and more or less stayed there. I did better than my worse fears. I am happy I was able to finish and even with some kind of a competitive time. When I finished I was able to walk to the car more or less normally, but once I got out it every step caused extreme pain as I was suspecting would happen. I have had this problem before, it just took more to make it happen when I was younger. It has gone away with some treatment after three weeks or so.

Benjamin had his best half in a while. He still stumbled, but handled it better and was able to run 1:13:45. His last 2 miles were at 5:20 pace.

We wheeled the mile to double-check and it was accurate.

I was not sure how fast I was going to run given that the fastest pace I have been able to run last week with the back problems was only 7:30. But I did a 4 mile warm-up and kept running right up until the start, which allowed me to run 6:15.

Benjamin had a great race, his fastest road mile ever, upgraded his position with a kick at the end and won $50 of prize money. This was a bit of a surprise as due to his stumbling problems he had not been able to run very fast in trainging and work on his speed. But I suppose occasional sub-5:00 pickups were good enough of a conditioning for the mile.

Bella was ahead of me for the first half of the race. That might have cost her a PR. Leigha improved her PR to 7:22.

Stephen had a strange race. He was running well, but then with about 500 to go his legs gave out for a few seconds and he could not run at all. Then he recovered and started running normally.
