Hilly route in Salem with Jen and AmberD, 7:27 pace.  Started slow and finished with a 6:49 mile.  Jen is on fire and I'm having a hard time swallowing the fact that I just really can't help her train for CIM right now.  But I need to do what is best for me.

The incredibly sad thing is this used to be an easy run for me and today I was literally dying.  I'm into being authentic so I'll just state that I basically have every classic sign of overtraining right now.  I probably have all year in hindsight.

work/school/life stress elevated.  

Oh not to mention basically peaking for 3 years straight without a single real break. ha!  So overtrained.

Thus a decision must be made by me as to whether I want to weather the storm and settle for being a hobby jogger for the rest of my life.  Or make an intelligent decision and take time off of running.  If I want to save my body and attempt to compete again (which of course I do at some point) my disordered brain will make the correct choice.

I am planning to run St. George marathon because clearly I'm a complete and utter idiot.  Just running with a friend trying to hit 3:35.  After that I have a plan that includes a  3 x 5 foot rubber room, handcuffs, and A LOT of netflix.

Look at your yearly/monthly mileage graphs for the last 3 years. There isn't a whole lot of variation. Maybe you don't even have to take a ton of time completely off (although do it if you do feel it's what you need!), but just cycle a bit more. You tend to stick in the 50-70 range regardless of how you are feeling. Just a thought. The body interprets all stress the same way, so if you are running 70 mpw and not sleeping and have a lot of life stress, that's like the equivalent of running 180 miles a week!

Thanks so much for your feedback Jake. You brought up a really good point about the variation. I honestly think much of it could just be mental burnout/frustration as well. I'm sure I'll figure it out and learn from it moving forward.

You are not going to be a hobby jogger the rest of your life. You are in a running slump. They happen to everyone. Whether your body needs a break or your mind needs a break, it's all the same. I've learned that if running isn't enjoyable, it's not worth doing. Whether you cycle your mileage a bit or take a few weeks off, your body and mind can use the rejuvenation. I took down time after St. George last year. I didn't run hard until I felt mentally and physically ready to recommit to running. I also added variety into my training. Cycle classes, lifting classes, Zumba. The change is always great, gives me some variety, less pounding, and different people to hang out with. I also like taking one day a week off. I do it for religious reasons, but also I have one day a week that I don't even think about running. It's a nice little refresher every week.

Just remember, your running is yours and yours alone. The goals you set and achieve are for your own fulfillment. There's no deadline or time limit to reaching them. I've been running since I was nine. I think one reason I still love it is that I've learned to ride the seasons of life and haven't been afraid to step away when I need to. Of course, having babies is a forced time out from running! Running is a good friend who is always there to welcome you back. True, you may lose a little fitness, but if you don't have that fire and passion for running it doesn't matter how fit you are. Fitness always comes back. So, do what you need to take care of yourself. Change things up. Take the pressure off yourself, and I think you will find your love for running return and you will be able to commit to it wholeheartedly.

Emily - Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. It truly means so much to me. Especially coming from you. Someone who has road the running roller coaster for years, continues to have success, and someone I admire so much. You reminded me to keep the bigger picture in mind and not get so frustrated with myself. Thank you!
