Happy Birthday Josse!

| 7 mile true recovery jog from my parents house on rolling hills in Saratoga Springs. 9:07 pace. First 4 miles by myself and then I picked up my sister for the last 3. She hasn't ran at all since October and she hasn't ever ran in the cold...I think I may have killed her!
I did not plan on spending the night at my parents house and did this run in fuzzy socks and a seriously oversized sports bra. Fun times!
There is a small group of us meeting at Kneaders in the River Bottoms of Provo at 7am tomorrow if anyone would like to join. 8-10 miles at an easy pace.

| 7 easy miles on Murdock Canal trail with strides, 7:49 pace. A little colder than normal this morning but it felt okay because the sun was out. :) I'm going to miss running in the light of day so much this week.
I am feeling really good as I slowly build my mileage and I'm excited to start training for Phoenix half on March 1st. That will be my first race of the year and then I will hopefully shift my focus to UVM. I'll likely jump in on a few 5k/10k runs inbetween for training. I'm excited to have something to focus on and add some purpose to my workouts. I'd like to get more quality tempo runs/LR with fast finishes in as I prepare for Phoenix.

| Treadmill tempo workout. 3 mile warm up, 7 mile progressive tempo in about 45 min/6:25 AP splits were approxiametely 6:39 (2%), 6:35, 6:31 (1.5%), 6:27, 6:22, (1%), 6:18 (.5%), 6:15 (0%), 1 mile cool down. 11 miles total in 77 minutes, 7:00 AP. I should have stopped at 5 when my feet started bothering me but I'm stubborn and physically I felt okay and wanted to finish. I'm going to see a podiatrist this week and toying with the idea of orthotics. We shall see but at this point I've tried just about everything and figure between my metetarsalgia and PF custom orthotics really can't hurt...

| 8 miles easy recovery on the Freeman's treadmill, 8:07 pace. I am staying with a couple of teenagers while the parents are on a 2 week cruise and I think I have a new found respect for all of you parents. I woke the kids up to get ready for school, went downstairs and did 4.5 miles, back upstairs to make sure the 14 year old got on the bus, back on the treadmill to get to 6 before stopping to make sure the 17 year old got off okay. I was going to go outside to finish after the kids were both off to school but decided just to finish it out on the treadmill. I must say that the convienence of having an at home gym was very nice.
I am not sure what my running will look like for the two weeks while I am staying with them but with the treadmill right there I do not think it will suffer much. If anything I think I will start adding more doubles. Me and my friend Julia are trading off staying with the kids so it will be a good mix of indoor/outdoor running the next two weeks.

| BYU indoor track with the JJ's Josse & Janae. Mileage is kind of a guess....but I was there for about 70+ min so it seems semi-accurate. I am not sure why the extra lap per mile makes is SO much harder to keep track?!? haha oh well. Quick 1-1.5 mile Warm up and then we started the workout before ROTC flooded the track 1 mile + 5 x on/off laps, 6:00, 66 average for the on's. I didn't really time all of them but the ones I did time we were hitting 65-66 seconds. Stayed and did a longer cooldown with Janae.
Not a great workout for me but not every workout can be great. I had a really hard time breathing on the indoor track for some reason and all the BYU shinanagans just messes with my mojo. haha still a fun workout with the girls. :)

| 13 miles on Murdock with a big group of ladies. I felt really good today after 2 nice and easy recovery days. My body really needed those recovery miles. Jen and I threw in a little tempo on the way back 6:37, 6:30. Not to shabby for the icy conditions. In my opinion tempo's this time of year should be more effort based with less emphasis on hitting specific paces. Overall the entire run was fairly swift after the first mile. 13.38/7:26 pace.

First set was 6:22, 6:18 (1.5% incline), second set 6:18, 6:13 (1.5% incline), last set 6:10, 6:03 (1% incline). 1 min on's were all at 5:42-5:45 pace and 0% incline. Felt good today!

| Couldn't make it to BYU indoor track with the JJ's:( but still wanted to get a good speed workout in even if I was stuck on the treadmill. 1600 + 5 x 400 + 1600 with 400 recovery in between everything. This first mile was 6:03 and felt like quite the push, all of the 400's were @10.5-10.8 (5:39 average), last mile was 5:58 and felt "comfortably hard". It is amazing how much easier the last mile felt after doing the faster 400's. I like the treadmill for tempo runs but not speed workouts like this because I feel like I kind of settle and don't push myself as hard as I would on the track. Still a really great workout for me.
I'm thinking about doing the 10k in Phoenix instead of the half. I've never really trained to race a 10k because there are really no good 10k courses in Utah and it would be kind of fun to go after that 37:xx time at sea level.

| 11.5 miles in the freezing cold orchards of Santaquin this morning. First 7 with Jen, I forgot to start my watch but Jen said it was 53 minutes and then I added 4.5 more on my own. I did a 2 mile tempo 6:30, 6:15. Overall a fairly brisk run for the day after a hard workout. Jen & I really suck at attempting recovery runs together. I kind of front loaded my mileage/workouts this week because I have a pretty busy weekend so I am looking forward to some really easy jogging the next couple of days.

Copied Jake K and transitioned between AT and LT half mile continuous reps. 2 mile warmup and then 8 miles with half mile at AT (marathon pace) 6:45 average, and then a half mile at LT (10k/HMP) 6:10 average. Last mile of the workout at LT 6:07 and then a half mile cooldown. 10.5/72 minutes. What a workout!
Transitioning from fast to fast(er) without any real breaks was a lot tougher than I thought it would be. I liked it!

| Met at BYU to do a track workout with a big group but the outdoor track was snow packed and I just did not want to run on the indoor track. Everyone but me wanted speed and I talked Amber D into just doing a fartlek type workout on the roads. We just ran up University Ave and did 10 x 1 min on/off. My watch doesn't work in the dark so everything was effort based. I have a head cold and I did a really hard workout yesterday so I was really just along for the ride and could kind of careless about what pace I was running. We did somewhere in the ballpark of 8 miles at around a 7:30 pace. I'd guess I was hitting around 6:00 for the ons.

| 8 miles easy on Murdock with Julia, 8:15 pace. I really needed this run with my bestest friend, I'm so thankful for her in my life. The miles flew by and the coversation was great. I'm going to give my body one more recovery day and then hopefully be ready for a workout on Saturday.
I liked this article on Running Times about Scheduling a Breakthrough. It's a long article but worth the read, below are some of my favorite take aways.
"Too often you will feel strong and be eager to push yourself harder, but you have to hold back and keep the pace comfortable and easy."
"Runners usually go at whatever pace they can sustain and think they have to push themselves during each workout, or at least sometime during the week. Slowing to a conversational pace and adding miles to the edge of your fatigue threshold, however, allows the consistent buildup in distance over a number of weeks."
"In other words, you have to get out of your comfort zone. Doing something you've done before, regardless of how hard it feels in the moment, is something your body already knows how to do, so that activity will not produce any meaningful adaptations."

None of us were feeling it during the warmup but I actually felt really good during the tempo part...not great...but good. 6:33, 6:21, 6:19, 6:16, I pulled the plug at 4 but ended up running my 5th mile pretty fast as well as I turned and finished the workout with the JJ's. It was really cold this morning, like only 7 degrees which makes it hard in opinion to really get into a great rythm so all in all a good workout to end the week. My endurance is totally weak but it's getting better. :)

Plus I am racing a 10k on Saturday so this needs to be a bit of a cutback week for me. 2.25 mile warmup and then 5.25 mile AT tempo 6:44, 6:39, 6:35, 6:31, 6:25, sprinted out the last .25 at 5:52 pace. 2 mile cooldown. After I stared at the ceiling for an hour I headed to the gym for a treadmill workout. 5 x 800 + 2 x 400 with 400 recovery at a 7:53 pace between everything. 800's were all 5:56 average pace and the 400's were 5:52 pace. I am feeling burnt out, stressed, and tired and I don't really know why...I think it is just time for Spring to come. It seems like it's been an extra long winter this year.

| 4th year running this race that the Hale Center Theatre in Orem puts on. It is definitely a tradition for me and I look forward to it every year. Mostly, like the guys mentioned I look forward to the Season tickets to the hale center and the pass to Thanksgiving point.:)
Julia, Rebecca & I ran the full 10k course as a warmup.
This 6 mile race is a pretty tough course. The first 3 miles are a gradual downhill and then you climb back up to the theatre. Spence asked me what my plan was and I told him to go out hard and then hang on...I think he thought I was kidding...I wasn't. Splits were 6:16, 6:08, 6:14, 6:40, 6:45, 6:18. I'm not super happy with the way that I ran. I basically raced the first 3 miles and then threw in the towel. Luckily Jen came out and found me with .75 miles to go and pulled me out of my funk and I kind of pulled it back together. I'm a little frustrated that I ran slower than last year by 10 seconds but at the end of the day a win is a win and I cannot be dissapointed about that. I think this is the longest I have ever gone in between races (3 months) and I think I am in an okay place moving forward with my training. I know it is no excuse but having no one to push me really seemed to effect my time on Saturday.
This raced proved to me that physically I am in good shape. I just need to get my heart, my passion, my drive back. I will get there! It was really fun to be back racing and to just feel the spirit and camraderie of the running community. I feel really fortunate to be surrounded by such positive, talented, and supportive runners that continue to inspire me. A great day for the sojourners club with wins in all races. Matt & Scott are just machines and both ran awesome. Always an absolute pleasure to see Brandon, Spencer, Jen, Amber, Marie, Rebecca, JulieC, Julia, and everyone else that raced so well. Also great to have my parents, my boyfriend, and Josse & Des out cheering on the course. Gosh I'm a lucky girl!

| I probably should have skipped the Monday Tempo....but I felt good and thought maybe I'd benefit from some faster miles on fatigued legs. 2.5 mile warmup, 5 mile AT tempo 6:53, 6:48, 6:44, 6:39, 6:35, 2 mile cooldown. 9.5 total/71 minutes I felt okay and kept it pretty light but this was definitely a bit of a risk coming off of a race. There is a fine line between getting a good workout in on tired legs and digging myself into an injury cycle/hole. I'm still trying to learn it... I plan on taking the next 2 days super easy and then a LR/workout on Thursday.
I really need to decide if I'm going to do the Half Marathon or 10K in Pheonix.

| What an adventure! Snowed in at Twin Falls on our way to Boise for a funeral. I forgot my yak traxs....who does that when they're going to Idaho. Anyway there was legit 3 inches of ice on the roads with fresh snow on top so running outside was not really an option. Hotel treadmill was calibrated and stuck at a 12% incline.....I made it .67 mi and realized I was risking injuring myself. Fortunately my parents understand (or just entertain) my crazy need to not function without a run and my Dad found our there was a Golds gym in Twin. Sweet! 7 miles at an 8 min pace. I asked the workers there why the don't plow the roads and they both laughed and said they do but it just keeps snowing.....welcome to Idaho!

My left shin was bothering me a bit on the cooldown so I think I'll be kind of cautious for a couple of days.

I did 12 x 1 min on/off on the way down and felt pretty good. Running has been kind of off for me this week so It was nice to get some turnover going in my legs. Ran the last mile a little faster on accident and hit a good marathon pace. Overall pace for the run was 7:28. A little wet out but overall a really nice morning. :)

That pace felt good for 3 miles but I'm pretty sure I couldn't string it together for 80 minutes. I really need to decide which race I am doing next weekend. I feel like my training is more optimally primed for the 10k.....but wrapping my head around an all out 10k kind of terrifies me. I think I just need to realize that if I decide to do the half that my race can only reflect the training that I've been doing which has lacked long tempos!

Phoenix Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:24:57 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 6.00 | 13.00 | 19.00 |
| This was not a great race for me. But I did have a blast in Phoenix and it was a very much needed break with plenty of sleeping and being completely lazy!
My friends and I got a ride up to the start in style in my friend Chris's Limousine...that was fun! The weather was crazy and I was sick so I didn't really know what I was going to do. Was I going to race or was I going to run for fun with my friends? I am not using my illness as an excuse for my performance (it was my choice to race) but it really has wiped me out and it definitely effected me.
My initial goal when I registered for this race was to run 1:21-1:22 and maintain a solid 6:15 pace. I ran the first 3 miles at exactly 6:15 pace and that was all my body had. I just had no energy and realized it just was not going to happen. So I backed off to marathon pace and readjusted my goal to 1:25.......and Ahh finishing! I averaged a 6:25-6:35 pace for the remainder of the race and barely snuck under my readjusted goal. The only problem was I felt like I was finishing a marathon instead of just a half. I truly had to "pep talk" myself into keep going every single mile it seemed. When we ran into the 10K at mile 7 I found myself pacing with 10kers and all alone. I think I momentarily even forgot I was racing...gosh it was just painful. It was lonely and miserable and I was so happy to finish! I'll update my splits later. It really wasn't a tragic fall apart but I just felt awful and really hope not to feel that terrible again until I actually race a marathon.
Splits: 6:13, 6:14, 6:15, 6:30, 6:33, 6:30, 6:30, 6:30, 6:33, 6:38, 6:40, 6:35, 6:24, :48
2 mile warmup with Julia/4 mile cooldown running my friend Christina in for the full marathon.
A few notable highlights of the race:
- Watching Riley run in was AWESOME!! Major congratulations to him. He had such a big lead and just looked so strong. It was so fun to cheer him on.
- Salted Caramel GU is kind of amazing. That was the only highlight of my race. Once that was gone it was back to my misery but seriously everyone should try this flavor. Yum!
- The Phoenix Marathon is such an awesome race. One of the best organized races I've ever done. The course is great and I highly recommend it. I really can't say enough about how well I was treated by the organizers.
- Seeing Derek and Allison out on the course was so fun. They are both inspiring athletes and just so kind and encouraging.
It was a really great vacation and I am not too upset about the race outcome. Sometimes you just have to do the best that your body has on that day and that is exactly what I did. The last 10 miles I seriously wanted to DNF and I somehow held it together so I guess it was good mental practice at running fast with nothing to give.

I am planning to take the next 3 weeks off of doing any sort of specific workouts. I need a bit of a break mentally & physically and I have some fun things planned the next few weekends....that may not necessarily be smart training wise...but they sure will be fun! Sometimes fun trumps smart. I also hope to get up on the trails again now that the snow has cleared out.
March 15th - Me and the best friend are running 28 miles for our 28th Birthdays. We are just planning a nice and easy run but 28 miles is still a lot farther than I've ever ran before so it should be interesting. I can't wait!
March 22nd - Pacing and crewing my good friend Janice for her 100 miler on Antelope Island.
I'll start training again if I'm ready the last week of March and my next race will be Provo City Half with maybe a 5k thrown into the mix for training. After that I'm planning to race UVM and then I will shut things down and just enjoy Summer fun running.

I live in such an odd place....I love it for running but it is funny the things I notice when it is actually light out. One of my neighbors has a pet goat. This is normal...several of my neighbors have goats in there yards and it's actually a really cute goat! Today I realized the goat goes in and out of the house via a doggy (goat?) door. I laughed so hard I nearly peed my pants.

| 28 miles with Julia to celebrate our 28 years of life! :):) 3:59, 8:31 pace. So so much to say about this run but I think I'll save most of it for my journal and not get too cheesy on the blog. I'm such an emotional runner and for me running is just so much more than logic, math, and physical capabilities. It is just so much deeper and this run was so symbolic and meaningful in so many ways. It was an absolute blast and could not have been more perfect. I was truly sad to see it end. The last mile was by far our fastest and I said to Julia "I feel like I could keep going forever". When your best friend is a Pshycologist it is kind of great, she is so insightful and her response was so perfect and will resonate with me forever. She just looked over at me and said "That's because you have so much more to give. There is no finish line today, life is a journey and your more ready than you've ever been for what lies ahead. You feel so strong still because you are so happy and comfortable with who you are and where your going in life. Your so ready!"
It was really just such a great experience and I'm so thankful for Julia and for my other friends that joined us along the way and made it so fun and memorable. My sister and Mom were going to bike the last 8 miles with us but my sisters bike tire popped when they were filling it with air so she ended up running the entire 8 miles. She hasn't ran more than 3 since May and the headwinds during the last 8 mile loop were 23-25mph. She was about 5 minutes behind me and Julia but just kept following us and never quit. I was so proud of her. My Mom even went back to pick her up after 5 miles and she said she wanted to finish.

I definitely wasn't planning a workout this morning but I was feeling all bouncy and was just naturally running faster so I tempoed out the last 3 6:37, 6:25, 6:20. Nothing too fancy and the last 2 are pretty aided but the effort felt really controlled so I think thats a good sign.
If anyone is looking for a good supportive shoe that is lighter weight I would like to throw out my plug for the Altra Olympus. They are just as supportive as the Hoka (in my opinion) but you can actually run fast in them and they don't look funny. :)

About a month ago Janice, Julia, and I ran 17 miles together. At the time Janice was registered for the 50 miler and after talking about her training Julia said you should just do the 100 miler....I chimed in and agreed. The next week she switched to the 100 miler and since we were the 2 that talked her into it we were committed to pacing her. I'll admit I was completely nervous about this....I mean first of all I'm far from experiences on the trails and secondly what do you say to someone after they've already ran 70 freaking miles?
Julia paced Janice through elephant head and I started running with her at 3am.
Miles 1-4: Things started out okay but after mile 1 there was an incredibly steep downhill portion. Janice's IT band started bothering her at mile 46 so she was walking all of the downhills and running the uphill/flat. We walked down the hill but it was so steep that it irritated her IT band so bad she could barely walk. She was in a lot of pain and the first 4 miles of the run took us 75 minutes. She caked her IT with icy hot took tylenol/ibuprofin and got a blessing from her husband. Somehow after mile 4 she was able to run again.
Miles 5 - 19.5: We ran the entire way. There were miles clicking in between 10:00-12:30 pace and Janice never stopped. Her breathing got a little heavy at one point and I suggested we walk for a minute. She didn't want to. Walking irritated her ITband more than running so we just carried on. We talked the entire time, I reminded her to drink/fuel and really that is all I did. She was absolutely amazing and it was seriously inspiring to see how strong she was this far into the race. It was an absolutely incredibly experience and I was so sad to see it end as we ran into the aid station where we met her husband Greg to run the final leg of the race with her. I finished running with her around 7:30 am and I cannot believe how fast those 4.5 hours flew by. I am so thankful I was able to experience this and I am truly inspired by these ultra runners. It is freaking amazing what our bodies are capable of.
Janice ended up finishing her very first 100 mile race in 22 hours and 19 minutes. She was second place female. She is seriously one tough cookie and I am so proud of her!
It was fun to see some FRB people out there. I finally got to meet the famous Jen (neasts) she is adorable and it was so fun to hang out with her. Also RAD, Kelli, and Scott W. Congrats to Scott on his 100 mile PR.:) I have absolutely no desire to run a 100 miler myself but it sure was a cool experience.

I tripped on a pot hole and fell kind of hard in the first half mile of my run today. I knew I was bleeding but I wanted to finish the run so I did and then headed to the clinic once I got to work since I couldn't dislodge the rock stuck in my right hand on my own. I'm glad I didn't try too hard on my own because Dr. Daly had to get out all sorts of tools to remove the boulder from my hand. She stitched me up, gave me a tetnus shot, and I still made it to Managers meeting by 9am. It was a busy morning for me!

This week was kind of a test to see where I'm at moving forward with my training. My speed is there and my endurance is there but just not together. haha! I felt like I was hanging on hard that last mile and obviously fell off pace a bit. But I'm optimistic as my goal race (UVM) is exactly still about 10 weeks out.

| 11.5 in the orchards with 2 x 3 miles, 7:03 pace. I wanted the first set to be a comfortable marathon pace and the second set a little faster with really hammering the last mile.
#1: 6:41, 6:16, 6:28 - this looks ugly but it is course adjusted. First mi gradual uphill, second mile gradual downhill, last mile flat.
#2: 6:29, 6:22, 6:02 - conservative start but I was really able to push that last mile which felt good. I'd like to say it was comfortable but it kicked my butt.
I'm making progress. I'm frustrated with how uncomfortable running fast feels right now but I think I just need to get more comfortable with feeling uncomfortable! Also the wind was a major issue this morning. It was relentless.

| 15.5 miles on the Utah Valley Marathon course. Julia and I ran miles 7-22 of the UVM course starting on the hills outside of wallsburg. It was a really great run and I hope to do this at least 1-2 more times before the race. Those hills are always tougher than I give them credit for but I really do love the rolling changes and nature of the course. We took the first 9 miles easy and then both started our tempos 6:08, 6:17, 6:18, 6:09, 2.5 mile cooldown.

| Rebecca's husband was nice enough to drive Jos, Julia, Ericka, Rebecca and I up to south fork of Provo this morning. We did a 2 mile warmup and then all kind of spread out and started our own workouts. I was planning to do 3 x 2 miles but after 2 miles I felt really good and decided a nice 6 mile progressive tempo would boost my confidence more than the 3 x 2. I've really been struggling with pacing for some reason lately so the main focus this morning was to start conservatively.
6:44, 6:25, 6:22, 6:14, 6:05, 5:53
After I finished I cooled down back to Julia & Ericka and finished there workout with them. I asked them what pace they wanted and they said 7:10. They did a 7:09 1st mile and then I really pushed them the 2nd mile and they stayed with me so I kind of kept pushing and we hit 6:48. 12 miles total all on the PCHM course.
Core work and IT rehab after.

I wanted more tempo miles but I was pushing the pace a bit on the last mile so I called it good with 6. Not really a great run for me. | Early morning Track workout at Salem HS with the South County Crew. We had a big group this morning including Mack, Aubs, Melissa, Scott, Jen, & Amber. Everyone kind of doing there own workout. Jen was doing 20 x 400 which sounded completely awful. I was late and so everyone was already into the workout when I got there. 2 mi wu
3 x 800: 2:56, 2:55, 2:54 (400 active recovery)
6 x 400: 85, 83, 84, 84, 84, 83 (200 active recovery)
I was really discouraged with this workout initially but I think it is my first time on the track this year so it's really no surprise that I felt a little rusty.

I did 5 mi easy with Janae, Rebecca, and Josse and then started a tempo 6:56, 6:28, 6:35, 6:33, 6:34, 6:31, 6:30, 6:28, 6:35. I wanted 10 but my legs were done at 9. I've had 3 pretty hard runs in the last 4 days and my legs were crying for some easy adaptation days by the end of today's run.
A friend sent me this quote this morning and it really resonated with me.
"I recall the day when I realized that I had become a runner because I had come to contentment in knowing, in deep honesty, that I wasn't running away from anything or toward anything, but was instead running WITH something. That day I felt from the soles of my feet straight through that I wasn't running through the forest; I was that part of the forest that was running. Just like that, today, I also see that I do not run to find meaning to life, but that instead the meaning of life runs through me." Joseph Campbell

| This was a really awesome 7 mile race for me...and a 6.1 mile progressive melt down. The only thing consistent for me so far in 2014 is that I kind of consistently suck and I consistently start out at what I was capable of in 2013 instead of 2014. This is a good lesson for me in realizing that I need to race where I'm at now instead of what I want.
I most definitely started out too fast and ended up running exactly what I thought I was capable of this year (my pre-race projection was 1:22-1:23) but it was oh so very ugly. I felt fantastic the first 7 miles of the race like wow maybe I swallowed some magic beans or something...it was all unicorns and glitter! I ran behind Jen...knowing she is in much better shape than me right now...yet I stuck close to her anyway. Maybe I was faster than I thought? dun, dun, dun......I know this was dumb but I did feel really good. My breathing was not labored, and I felt like maybe I could go even faster! hahaha! Things started to get a little harder at mile 7 and then by mile 10 there wasn't a positive affirmation I could tell myself to get my body to move faster. I am mentally strong but what happened Saturday was a complete physical bonk. It was almost something I haven't really ever experienced in running to this degree...at least not in running just a half marathon. I tried mile dedications, I tried every shiny mantra I could think of....but the bottom line is my legs quit working and there wasn't anything I could do about that. When the legs quit working eventually the brain will follow and by mile 11 I was checked out. My only goal became getting to those dang balloons that meant I could quit moving my body. Eventually the end did come and I was ever so grateful!
Splits: 6:11, 5:59, 6:15, 6:02, 6:04, 6:09, 6:13, 6:21, 6:25, 6:28, 6:39, 6:33, 6:33...sprinted in at a whopping 6:18 pace!
Ran a 2 mile warm up and then a 4 mile cooldown with my sister. I was planning on a super slow cool down but my sister wanted to jump in on the 5K and when Amber races she means business. I trotted behind her and tried to keep up. 19 miles with zero fluids...I practically thought I was going to faint by the end and was so happy to see water I could have hugged a volunteer.
Lots to learn from this one but I'm still in the process of figuring that lesson out so I'll leave the report at this. I love running and I love hanging out with runners but gosh I did not love this race!

I think what I'm experiencing may be a bit of a hole....Jen wants to do 30 x 300's tomorrow. Did we run the same race Saturday?

I'm going to try and kick my mileage/intensity up a notch the next two weeks and see how my body responds. I've been fairly uncomitted with this marathon training - I think a combination of lack of passion + lack of speed. But I've got 2-3 weeks to pull it together so I'm going to do my best!

It was however a beautiful morning and we picked up a snail for my nephew on the trail. :) In case you were wondering yes I did run with a snail in my hand for 1.5 miles and I kept it alive. I'm so talented!
Good luck to everyone racing Ogden tomorrow! I'll be up there running the first half relay style and look forward to cheering everyone in.

Ogden Marathon Relay (13.1 Miles) 01:28:18, Place overall: 1 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 9.00 | 11.00 | 20.00 |
| I had an absolute blast running the relay.
I paced my friend Amber for the first 7 miles of the relay. Her goal was 6:50 and I believe we finished with a 6:55 AP. I thought I might be able to make up some time in my leg but apparently I think I'm faster than I really am... The course from mile 7-13 was a little tougher than I anticipated and I was completely tanked by the end. All I remember thinking as I ran into the half way point was thank goodness I'm not running the full! I did not restart my watch but I think my AP was probably around 6:35 for my portion. I wanted a MP workout so this definitely served it's purpose but dang it felt about a million times harder than MP. I'm super frustrated honestly that running fast feels so forced. I feel like I'm putting in the workouts and training well but I'm just not feeling fluid at all.
That said this day was not about me. It was about supporting my friends who were running the full and I had a blast running all of them in. It was a really tough day for a lot of people and as I sat waiting for my friend Jen I was completely humbled by the peserverence of so many runners. It was a hard day for a lot of people and as the time was approaching noon the heat was fairly defeating. I cheered at mile 25 from about 11:30am until noon high fiving runners and just soaking it all in. People can say what they want, and I realize this is open to criticism but in my opinion running a 5 hour marathon takes a whole heck of a lot of determination. It is in no way shape or form easy to be on your feet for 5 hours. I wont say it's easier to run a sub-3 hour marathon than a 5 hour marathon. That is just like trying to compare trail running to road running. But it definitely opened my eyes quite a bit and gave me a greater appreciation for running and how it brings so many people at different levels of the sport together all reaching for a common goal. "We're all in this together."

Jen gave me a good pep talk this morning and talked me off of my downward spiraling ledge. Thank goodness for her for helping me to see the bigger picture and realize that this funk/sub-par streak of performances will pass as long as I stay consistent. She reminded me of when she went through a similar funk last Summer and how she see's it in her track/XC runners often. As long as I'm not injured or overtraining which I don't think I am I should come out of it. I just need to focus on my mental game and stay consistent. I'm going to get some routine blood work done this week just to rule out anything major being off.

I've realized that timing them gets in my head and I run just as fast and smarter when I don't time them. Jen did time hers and hit 83-85 and I was probably ~5 seconds behind her so right where I wanted to be. I felt really strong today...that was a rare and nice feeling! 10.5 total, 7:18 pace

Run of Remebrance 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:50:40 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 7.00 | 2.00 | 9.00 |
| Ran with my sister because my legs were still completely trashed from the UVM course Saturday and this 10k course is hard. And to be completely honest the last thing I really needed was one more failed race to further deplete the small semblance of confidence I'm currently retaining. Anyway, after the first 4 miles I did manage a 2 mile tempo 6:16, 5:58. I did not feel awesome but was glad I got something out of the race. Amber was also feeling pretty off yesterday and I do not think this race reflects her current fitness. She has had a respiratory illness for 2 weeks and just couldn't breathe well.
We had a good time and this race is always a fun tradition. Jen ran 37 minutes which to those that know this course is just completely outstanding. I may or may not be booking a ticket to MN to watch that girl go after her dream!

After one I could just tell that I didn't have it. Oh well. 6:04 mile, 1 mile steady 7:23, 2 mile tempo 6:35, 6:17. Totally off week and I knew it would be dumb to try and get a quality LR+workout in so I just took it easy and really enjoyed catching up with Julia. Really needed this run. The sad thing is even the 8:06 pace did not necessarily feel easy. Tried the Brooks Pure Flow to see if they would be better on my feet....nope I was aching by the end. Glad I tried them out before the marathon.

Last week was a total wash...it was the worst I have felt physically running in such a long time. Even my easy runs just weren't clicking or feeling fluid at all. I was pissed at myself so I pushed myself with awful form trying to outlisten my body which just further aggrivated my grion strain and lead to me feeling trashed and mentally/emotionally depleted. Being stubborn is often temporarily "nice" but almost always stupid and I know better.
Anyway this week is a new week and I'm trying to turn my attitude around. I may not be able to control the way my body feels but I can control my thoughts! Mainly I need to be smart and remember that this marathon is just a race and not worth injuring my body or being dumb. At the end of the day I'd rather run a 3:30 with my friend, have fun, get my BQ and not risk not being able to run all Summer. I love my summer running. I've been pushing my body for three straight years setting PR after PR and I kind of think my body is trying to tell me something at this point. Also to note is that I had 5 tubes of blood drawn on Tuesday last week and I think that may have taken more out of me than I gave it credit for. I hope that these next 2 weeks I can just focus on taking better care of myself and then just roll the dice on June 14th without any expectations and see what happens. I do not have a problem just enjoying the ride and getting my BQ if that seems like the best choice for my body. I apologize for the emotional blogging and lack of positivity lately!

AM #2: Met my sister for the last part of her last LR before her half. We did 3.5 super slow, she has been sick and struggled breathing for a month now. I talked her into going to the doctor. My Mom works at a clinic and she has insurance so I dragged her there. She has a pretty awful sinus infection and they put her on antiobiotics and a respirator. Apparently being stubborn runs in the family. Now I do feel kind of bad for being so mean to her during the 10k!

| 2.5 mi with a few strides, 7:46 pace. Felt like crap...pretty typical but the no "pop" worries me just a bit. I've got friends here from Minnesota, Nebraska, and Kansas and my parents are partiers so we jumped around way too much last night in the Wardle family races. I did beat my Dad in the foot race but my 4 year old nephew kicked my butt in the potatoe sack (pillow case sack) race.
I have no set goals for the marathon tomorrow besides finishing and doing my best that my body has to offer. To be completely honest I've basically sucked at running all year. Which is fine, I had a good year last year and had kind of chalked it up to just a down year. I can accept a crappy year if it is because I'm not putting in the work...but I was putting in the work and still missing the mark. I know my body fairly well and could tell something was just off. I wasn't recovering from workouts, felt winded all the time, and felt constant fatigue. So I finally made a doctors apt with my chief diagnosis of "I'm not running well". haha! My doctor ordered labs and then basically sat me down and was completely blunt and honest with me. Having been to the doctor twice before for my ongoing amenorrhea and told it was just normal and I shouldn't really be concened I definitely dig honesty. My labs weren't perfect...my hormones are all low (shocker!) and my iron levels are not off the charts but lower than they should be for someone whos runs as much as me. But the bottom line is the amenorrhea is probably catching up to me and hence the fatigue and not recovering well from workouts. There is really no more denial or sugar coating it but sometimes facing our realities really kind of freaking sucks. You can only outsmart genetics, and burn the candle at both ends for so long I guess and my body is trying to tell me it’s sick of pushing so hard I think. To be clear I am not even 5"2 and weigh 112 pounds...my BMI is completely normal by any standards. But apparently my body really really likes fat..aren't I lucky.:) Sure I can argue that it's not fair. It's not. But it is what it is. I've dealt with Amenorrhea basically the past 9 years with maybe 2-3 years in there where I had periods (that were not BC induced) and I'm incredibly fortunate that my dexa scan came back pretty close to normal. So there you have it my dear diary entrance of the month...your welcome!
I'm still running the marathon because I'm stubborn, arguably stupid and its tradition. I'll still do my best, but I'm taking the pressure off and I'm completely content with whatever happens. I need to listen to my body and I'm pretty bad at that so hopefully I'm not willing to put myself through as much pain as I did last year. Also for the record I completely understand how serious what I'm dealing with is and how open to criticism sharing this information could be. But I also think it's something that a lot of female runners deal with and don't talk about. So I'm taking a risk and being honest on a public website. I have no idea what I'm thinking!
Good luck tomorrow everyone! I cannot wait to see some familiar faces. UVM #4: Here we go!

Utah Valley Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:08:44, Place overall: 7, Place in age division: 1 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 0.00 | 26.20 | 26.20 |
| I absolutely love UVM! This marathon makes me happy, happy, happy.:) I knew going into the race that:
A: My race performance has kind of sucked all year.
B: My feet are worse than ever. Really I need to deal with these mortons neuromas or quit marathoning.
C: My Amenorrhea/fatigue/low iron & hormone levels have been effecting me.
That said I am completely okay with the way I responded to my body throughout the race and my time of 3:08. Sure most people would look at that time as disappointing and a setback for me but I had accepted the scenario before the race even started so it wasn't too hard for me to swallow. I'm proud of myself for not being stupid and running through the pain I normally would. The beauty of it all is that I was able to walk after the race which was so not the case in 2013. My only regret is not just starting in my Altra Olympus shoes. It was really quite dumb of me to think I could wear the Virata as bad as my feet have been this year.
Drove up to the start with Rebecca, Josse, and Janae. Laughed my butt off on the ride up. Josse couldn't believe I was just eating a stale slice of kneaders bread for breakfast that I stole the night before from dinner.:) Next I attempted to calm Rebecca down by giving her a heartfelt heart to heart about running and told her don't worry time on the clock is monetary (meant to say arbitrary) and that had us all laughing so hard I don't think we'll ever forget it. Onto the race!
Mile 1: 6:33 Started out a little behind Rebecca & Josse
Mile 2: 6:38 Huh, I guess I'm going to run 26 miles today. That's probably going to be kind of awful.
Mile 3: 6:43
Mile 4: 6:41 The writing on the roads in Wallsburg were really funny. "Get out of our town", "We didn't want you here anyway." All I was thinking is I wish I could hide in one of the pretty red barns and stay.
Mile 5: 6:43 Trying to run on the gravel on the left side of the road because my feet are already hurting. huh
Mile 6: 6:46 I'm kind of bored...I guess maybe I'll eat a GU. Citrus flavor...it made me really crave a pina colada slurpee.
Mile 7: 6:44 "Sally the camel has 3 humps, you got this!"
Mile 8: 7:05 "Sally the camel has 2 humps."
Mile 9: 7:11 "Sally the camel has 1 hump." Hi Steve! Nice surprise to see Steve at the aid station and stopped singing for a moment to run over and high five him.
Mile 10: 6:40 "Everything is awesome!" Lego movie...."Everything is awesome!" I bet I am going to totally PR today. Oh wait.....the downhill absolutely killed my feet. Ouchie Momma....maybe I'm totally going to die today. huh
Mile 11: 6:37 Oh yeah the feet really hurt. Don't touch the pavement, don't touch the pavement. "F" bomb! ScottC bike miles...got a few sips of water.
Mile 12: 6:58 Ran into Seth. Chatted with him this whole mile and told him there was just no way I was keeping up. My plan was to stop at the halfway point and wait for Melissa. I didn't think she would be too far behind and couldn't fathom the thought of running alone with this pain.
Mile 13: 6:56 Gosh I feel kind of awesome, so much better than last year. I'm barely breathing or sweating but my feet are in so much pain I'm pretty sure if I move any faster they are going to light on fire.
Mile 14: 7:14 I need to really slow down if I'm ever going to finish this race with two feet attached. Scott caught me on the bike and I handed him my bag of pills. Can you please dig out my Ibuprofen 800....2 salt pills, 1 caffeine pill. I forgot to pack the ibuprofen 800. Damnm it!
Mile 15: 7:21 Running on the outsides of my shoes.
Mile 16: 7:51 Steve was at the aid station and I told him I needed him to drive to his house and bring me my Olympus as fast as humanely possible. So thankful he was there. No longer racing....just jog it on in at get your BQ Rachelle. Saw Aubrey Running up she told me "You look great". Yes! At least my hair was still in place.
Mile 17: 8:23 Tears! Complete melt down. Jogging hurts so bad...crying while running is so hard I guess I'll just walk. When I walk my feet hurt more and it does not help. Walking, crying wow complete and utter melt down. You are supposed to be an elite runner and you are walking and crying really? I mean really? I am assuming the headwind effected me here as well but to be completely honest I was so consumed with my feet I didn't notice it. I also quit drinking, fueling, and doing anything right really. I thought I was the worst runner in the century of ever and I was probably going to take last place in the race. only semi-dramatic...:) Saw Mack running up and asked her where my lortab was.
Mile 18: 7:30 Where's Cam? :(!
Mile 19: 7:15 Amber found me on the bike. I immediately asked her for a ibuprofen 800 and a gun... She handed me a salt pill....I need a ibuprofen 800...she handed me another salt pill....finally she found the ibuprofen in the fanny pack.
Mile 20: 7:48 More crying more walking. Crying and running is really tough you guys! Saw Janice at this mile.
Mile 21: 7:46 Stopped at the aid station to hug my Mom and tell her I was completely fine. Really physically I was fine I just could not push through the pain my feet were in. My parents do not care what time I run but my running causes them anxiety because they know I normally have no fear. I needed them both to understand that I was okay I just couldn't race through the foot pain.
Mile 22: 7:41 Shoe change. Hallelujah! I wanted to chuck both of my Virata's at that girl that had passed me but I refrained.
Mile 23: 7:28 Finally drank something for the first time since mile 11. I told Amber to tell me a story.....Amber: "Yesterday I ran 1 mile from my house and you know what? Me: What? Amber: 1 mile is so dang far...it was so hard!" Me: Awesome because I still have 3 left...don't you have any better stories? Amber: Oh....I think they have creamies at the finish!
Mile 24: 7:24 Nothing exciting...just planning my nephews Dinosaur birthday party.
Mile 25: 7:13 Wanted to stop at 7-11 for my slurpee but Amber told me I needed to finish. This mile really is gradually downhill.
Mile 26: 6:56 I want to take my shoes off. "Keep fighting, don't give up, never give up." Yo Gabba Gabba
.4: 6:30 Pretty elated to be done....threw my hands in the air with my timing chip in them.
Since I had to take my timing chip off with the shoe change I ran with it in my hand. For the chip to register at the finish line it needs to be within one foot of the mat. So I spent the next 15 minutes working with the timing company to make sure my time was registered. They were actually really nice and got me in the system just fine. I did not really care to have my time recorded but I did really need my BQ. Heaven forbid I run another marathon to get that.
Ripped my shoes off and my feet cramped up pretty bad but not nearly as bad as last year. Hopped on Amber's bike and road back to my friends that were finishing the marathon. I was not upset about my race but I just needed to get out of there and I really enjoyed riding in with my friend Lindsay and seeing Jen, Timothy and others out on the course. Probably my favorite part of the day. And at last I did finally get that creamy!:)

| I need to toot my sisters horn a little bit because she is the most humble, selfless person I know and she completely rocked her first half marathon!
I finally talked my sister Amber into taking the plunge and running a half marathon. I'm 100% sure I was WAY more excited about this endeavor than she was. There is something kind of awesome about seeing someone accomplish something they truly didn't believe they were capable of. And when you love running as much as I do it is also just great to convince someone else in the family to join in on the chaos. For all the years Amber has supported my running, driven all over the state to watch me, and woken up at the butt crack of dawn to bike by my side...she most definitely deserved to do something for her! She truly has sacrificed A LOT to support me and she has never once complained. Cheesy as it may sound Amber is without a doubt my best friend and I wouldn't have it any other way. She has been a major blessing in my life this year as I have literally leaned on her daily.
Amber's Running/Training Background (let's just go with some bullet points here):
- She absolutely refuses to wear a watch. I even gave her one and haven't seen her wear it once.
- Her mileage peaked at 20 miles per week.
- She did one 10 mile run about 5-6 weeks out from the race. She loved it but shortly after she got really sick and ended up having an awful respiratory illness that completely wiped her out.
- She wears sweatpants and T-shirts from HS to run in. I somehow convinced her to wear an actual pair of running shorts on Saturday!
- She always tells me "I'm not a real runner."
- She is competitive and the mentally toughest person I know.
Pre-Race: Rode up to the start on the busses with AmberD. My sister seemed fairly calm considering it was her first half marathon until I mentioned that we would have to run to get back down from where we were driving. Haha I probably didn't need to mention that but it was funny to see her face. We did the normal pre-race routine and then lined up behind the 1:50 pacer. Amber had no real goals beyond finishing.
Splits: 8:15, 8:27, 8:14, 8:09, 7:53, 7:50, 8:09, 8:20, 8:24, 8:14, 8:19 (what hill?), 8:16, 7:46
Finish Time: 1:47:20
Race: We started out behind the 1:50 pacer and remained there until mile 4. Amber's breathing was low and we were just chatting like a normal run. I really just wanted to try and keep her calm. We laughed about people we ran past and made bets about whether or not her husband would make it to the finish. I did absolutely nothing for her beyond being by her side...in fact she probably could have ran faster had I not been talking her ear off.
We passed the 1:50 pacer and sped up a bit the next 3 miles out of the canyon based on effort. Our race strategy that we kind of talked about was that I would run right by her side until mile 8 and then I would run right in front of her and all she would need to do was follow me. Together we also came up with dedication miles for the last 4 miles of the race. Out of the canyon I told her she needed to drink but she was so excited about the fan fair that she flew past the aid station. I chased after her with a full cup of gatorade but she was going so fast and I was spilling so much gatorade that I finally gave up. Crap I was worried about her hydration. I talked her into trying a GU on the golf course and I think she nearly puked "how do you guys eat that crap..it is disgusting!" At mile 9 I made sure she walked for a bit and got fluids in her. She was not even slowing at all out of the canyon but I knew that the next 4 miles would be the toughest.
The next 4 miles were what proved to me that my sister is indeed the toughest person I know. She was in pain but she held it together like a champ. I literally could not believe it. Who maintains there pace in a downhill race....in there first half marathon? I kept expecting her to slow but she just kept fighting. I warned her all day about the big hill in mile 10 and reminded her that is was okay to slow down but to focus and not stop. She flew past me on the hill and I was the one trying to keep up. So much for my pep talk...ha! The last 2 miles of the race were hard for Amber but she never once complained and never slowed down. Mile 12 was dedicated to her daughter Vara and I sang Katy Perry "Baby you’re a firework" out loud the entire mile. It is her Vara's favorite song and I also knew it would probably annoy her enough to move fast. I guess it worked. My apologies for those around us. The last mile we dedicated to Trevor and it was Amber's fastest mile of the race! I'll admit I was pretty mean to her during this mile but she responded and fought hard for every single step. I do not have a split for her last .1 because I tried to run up a head and get a picture. She must have been moving fast because all I ended up with was a picture of her back.
Words do not even do justice how proud of my sister I am. I've always known she was stubborn and tough but she took this to an entirely new level on Saturday. She was overwhelmed with emotion at the finish. I really don't think she realized she could actually do this.
Amber you are a "real runner". A real good one! I hope breaking this barrier can help my sister to realize that she is not the only runner in the family. I'm incredibly thankful I was able to share this opportunity with her and am already planning her first marathon. ;)

| Day #1: Starting a new weight lifting plan with Scott, Melissa, and AmberD M/W/F for 45 min sessions. The early mornings may kill me but I'm super excited and so grateful that Melissa and Scott are willing to take Amber and I through this. They both started this program in the beginning of 2014 and Melissa has improved her race times significantly in every single distance. Beyond that they both look awesome and so incredibly fit! I desperately need to take some extended time off of racing (likely the remainder of 2014) and gaining muscle and finding a new hobby will hopefully fit the bill. I'm really looking forward to it. I can't cold turkey quit running...I'm an addict! But I am hoping to cutback a bit and cut out any sort of workouts. Hopefully this will help me move in the right direction with reversing my Amenorrhea.
I will race Speedy Spaniard and Payson Onion Days because they are tradition. But I don't really plan on doing any workouts for them. Other than that I will be pacing for RYR pacers at Hobbler, Timp, and Nebo half marathons and spending the rest of my time and energy really engaging in this awful feet issue. I cannot race a half or a full at my optimum potential until I figure it out.
Saga of my life. :):)

Great article by Runners Connect yesterday. I love the 4 takeaways and really needed to hear #1 especially since I've had a really crappy running year.
1. Accept the ebb and flow of your running career
"It is extremely rare to have a running career in which every year boasts improvement."
2. Accept the decrease in speed that comes with aging
3. Focus on your own hard work rather than anyone else’s race results
4. Be Brave
“courage is not the absence of fear, but the realization that something else is more important than that fear”.
So, take joy in the struggle and the sacrifice it takes to be a runner. It’s part of what makes this sport so wonderful.

Hobbler Half Pacing (12.92 Miles) 01:33:38 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 14.00 | 0.00 | 14.00 |
| Paced 1:35 at the Hobbler Half Marathon. I know it is possible to lose satellite reception in the canyon but this course was definitely short. I always pace off of mile markers and not my garmin but there was no 13 mile marker so this made pacing a challenge. Rather than standing around and waiting until 1:35 to cross the mat I stayed exactly on my 7:15 per mile pace and crossed at 1:33:38. I was right on pace the entire race and there isn't much I can do to control the fact that the course was short.
What I did do is immediately after crossing I started jogging back to let the other pacers know. For those that pace what are your thoughts on this? If the course is significantly short/long should you stay on your correct mile pace or still aim to hit overall time? In my opinion it is tacky and bad pacing to slow down too much in the finishing shoot...anyway I was just wondering what others (Andy?) thoughts are?

8 mile run mostly with AmberD, 7:54 pace. Gosh whoever stole my running mojo should seriously give it back. Every run just feels forced lately and I really just think it's harder to run after doing weights and in spanish fork. meh...no offense to those that live there but that town kind of sucks to run in IMO.

I am so ridiculously out of shape. I was using every mantra in my brain and counting down the seconds to hit that 6:30! bahaha Melissa and I nearly had to crawl to the drinking fountain at the park. Hot, humid, and miserable out this morning. Waah, waah, waah

| Paced 1:35 at the Timp half. I love pacing but gosh I am so sick of waking up so early on Saturdays! Anyway it was a fun race and I had a blast. I am an idiot and only packed my Viratas (light weight). Between that and the downhill pounding on my feet the last 4-5 miles of the race were pretty dang painful. The pace was fine but I was just in pain. Lame! We paced really well until the last 2 miles where the mile markers were off. I sped up because I always pace by mile markers and didn't want to be off. Of course the mile markers were off and not me so we ended up coming in a little early. Overall I feel I did a good job and I helped quite a few runners. It was a good day!

| I kinda ran the Speedy Spaniard...the only problem was it was not speedy at all and I wasn't registered. I do not know what is wrong with me. Even my lack of training and sleep does not justify how awful/awkward running anything under a 7min pace feels. This is the weirdest thing I've ever experienced. To be clear I am honestly completely okay with it. But it is still weird and a little frustrating to look back at where I was a year ago. Anyway 1.75 mi wu and then 5 mile tempo I guess I'll call it. 6:43, 6:23, 6:23, 6:41, 6:50. I was so done and since I wasn't registered I saw no point in dragging out my misery.
Ran back for AmberD and then ran back for my sister. Long jog back up to the cars after the race. 13 miles total for the day. Felt like 20+ I haven't been so excited to stop running in awhile. I was kinda sick the rest of the day. I've been getting light headed and dizzy feeling super easy lately. Maybe just the humidity and heat or maybe I'm dying. ha! Fun day with family nonetheless. :):)

| 2 mile jog to the start at Grant Park from my hotel.
I signed up for this race on a whim when I heard about my conference in Chicago. I thought I would maybe train for it but thinking was as far as I got. To be completely honest I just haven't had the desire to train for anything this Summer...which has been completely fine with me. I told my parents the night before that I wasn't racing and was planning to finish in around 45 minutes. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that even running that 7:30 pace in the humid air sounded daunting.
Anywho I got to the start of the race and scoped out my surroundings. There were a bazzilion people with pace group/waves starting at 7:00 and going up to 15:00. They announced before the gun went off that there would be prizes for the top 3 men/women and after only 2 women were in front of me the first mile I decided to make a major surge and go for the win! I'm being completely sarcastic...basically this was my worst 10k time ever but lucky for me it was a race not a time trial. :-)
At the turn around point on the Lake Front path the closest female was a good 30 seconds behind me so I knew if I could just hang on to my 6:30 pace I would get the win. I hung on by the string of a thread and soaked in all of the cheering of the runners going out. Out and back courses are great! Everyone made me feel completely awesome and they even had a tape for me to break at the finish line. Apparently I just need to move to Chicago. It was a lot of fun! I'm still taking autograph/photo op appointments so just PM me for an appointment.

I truly cannot comprehend how people recover from actually all out racing this canyon. I am so ridiculously sore and we took it easy. That canyon has got to be an average of ~10% decline the entire way? It was fun but man I am getting old and my body just cannot handle the downhill like it used to.

It was nice to just really take it easy and focus on recovery today. 8 hours of work + 6 hours of school on Tuesdays is really going to take some getting used to for me so these easier wednesdays are going to become a must. :)
Also a must should be getting more than 5-6 hours of sleep per night and eating something besides icecream, popcorn, and diet coke.

| 10 miles in the orchards. I ran the first 3 with Amber and then she followed her taper plan and I decided to try a tempo. I haven't done any sort of speed since Chicago and I kind of just wanted to expirement with where I am at. Ended up with 6:40, 6:32, 6:21. Not terrible but if I decided to race at all this Fall I've definitely got some work to do.

1 mi wu at 9,000 elevation running up hill that was plenty.
Paced 1:35 with Melissa. I think we did a good job. Kept things under control while flying down a cliff.
I bought a new pair of shoes last night that I thought would be better on my feet. They are a step up from the Nike Pegasus which I have liked but I hated these shoes...my feet were on fire by mile 5.:( I'm going to have to buy a new pair of Altra Olympus or Hoka's before pacing Big Cottonwood full next weekend. I'm looking forward to running a full without the pressure of racing but it is still a full marathon and I am worried about my feet.
Ran to my brothers house after the race, played with my neices and nephews for an hour and then ran back up to the finish to wait for my friend Carla to finish the full.

Big Cottonwood Marathon (Pacer) (26.2 Miles) 03:24:32 | Slow miles | Fast miles | Total Distance | 26.20 | 0.00 | 26.20 |
| 3:25 pacer with my friend Amber. This was absolutely the most rewarding marathon I've ever ran. Pacing a full marathon takes on a whole new purpose as many runners are trying to BQ. 3:25 was a popular pace as it is the BQ time for men 45+. We had a really big group and I have absolutely no regrets. It was an awesome experience and one that I am glad I was able to share with Amber and many, many, runners along the way. We had runners with us from Nashville, Tahoe, Austin, St. Louis, Colorado, and a few from UT.:)
To be completely honest I think this is one of the best races I've ever paced. Pacing a full is not easy but I became emotionally attached to my runners, worked really well with my bff and pace partner Amber, stuck to my pacing plan, and just did a really good job. I wont go off on a soap box right now but I am pretty dang passionate about pacing. It is not something to be taken lightly and when I commit to doing it I commit to doing a good job.
Canyon miles 1-16: Absolutely gorgeous! We saw a Moose at mile 4 and I was wishing I had a camera to prove it to my nephew. I liked that the first mile started uphill and by mile 2-3 I was locked into pace. These miles were really smooth and our splits were between 7:15-7:45. I worked to get to know the group and make sure I had everyones names. It was cool running with the old(er) guys because most of them were very experienced runners and 2 of them were running their 99th marathon!
Out and back miles 16-23: I knew these miles were going to be tough not only for the runners but for me as well. I'm typically a 2 hour long run kind of gal so wrapping my head around an extra 85 minutes took me some self talk. I had a few moments of doubt between miles 16-19.5 at the out and back turn around point. My feet were hurting and I was questioning my ability to pace a full. Luckily this race was not about me and those thoughts were quickly erased with worrying about losing our runners. This section was hard after flying downhill but there were also things about it I liked. I loved the view of the salt lake valley, cheering the fast runners on, and seeing so many running friends with the out and back. As a pacer this is also where runners start dropping like flies and it is so hard to keep doing your job instead of staying with them.
23-26.2: These miles were great and this is where the real work starts as a pacer. I felt great and was able to 110% focus on my runners. We picked people up and had a few stay with us the entire race. I loved the downhill finish and Amber and I were able to work together to help as many runners as possible. We gapped a bit and she stayed forward and I held back as I picked people up. Finished in 3:24:32 to ensure we got those that needed a BQ well under 3:25.
It was a great experience and I would definitely do it again. A lot of people have asked me what I think about the course and I honestly think it was great. Obviously with any course that starts downhill it is difficult to transition but as long as you are aware and prepared I don't think it was too bad and the downhill finish was awesome. I don't think I would ever actually race it....steep downhill racing is really hard on my IT bands but I really enjoyed pacing it. :)
I know I'm beating a dead horse with this one but my feet were not happy...even in the hokas. :( I was in pain by mile 16 and walking through the aid stations was enough to keep it at bay. Definitely something I need to address again.
Ending on a positive note it was awesome to cheer, hug, and celebrate with those that got there BQ's or PR's. Pacing is fun and I really enjoy it.

| 10 miles in Salem with Jen & AmberD, 7:25 pace. Track+road+trail+grass
The girls were doing a track workout. I had an eyelash malfunction on the way, nearly wrecked, and spent 15 minutes on the side of the road digging my fake eyelash out from underneath my contact. By the time I arrived they were almost done with the workout so I just jogged jubiously around in circles. My watch somehow clocked a 6:36 mile while I was chasing Jen down to talk during her cooldowns probably. Jen hit her 2:42's for her 800's and Amber hit her 6:35 miles. I hit a wall hard and had to pray to the running god's just to finish 10 miles.

| Hilly route in Salem with Jen and AmberD, 7:27 pace. Started slow and finished with a 6:49 mile. Jen is on fire and I'm having a hard time swallowing the fact that I just really can't help her train for CIM right now. But I need to do what is best for me.
The incredibly sad thing is this used to be an easy run for me and today I was literally dying. I'm into being authentic so I'll just state that I basically have every classic sign of overtraining right now. I probably have all year in hindsight.
Not recovering from workouts ever
not sleeping well at night
work/school/life stress elevated.
Oh not to mention basically peaking for 3 years straight without a single real break. ha! So overtrained.
Thus a decision must be made by me as to whether I want to weather the storm and settle for being a hobby jogger for the rest of my life. Or make an intelligent decision and take time off of running. If I want to save my body and attempt to compete again (which of course I do at some point) my disordered brain will make the correct choice.
I am planning to run St. George marathon because clearly I'm a complete and utter idiot. Just running with a friend trying to hit 3:35. After that I have a plan that includes a 3 x 5 foot rubber room, handcuffs, and A LOT of netflix.

| 4.5 mi wu. I decided to do this little race with Amber & Jen. Jen needed a tempo run for her CIM training and Amber wanted a nice little STG tune up. I did not want to run alone so this seemed to fit the bill.;) I did not register because I did not really plan on racing. I was just there for moral support. Turns out the race was way smaller than I anticipated. They bussed us up to the start. We rode up to the 10k start and then jogged down to the 5k start. It was a gradually downhill course so I thought I could maybe break 20.
I kind of like racing without any pressure. I let Amber go out in front and ran a 6:23 first mile, I caught and passed amber at 1.5 and encouraged her to stay with me. mile 2 was 6:25, and the last mile was 6:22. I stopped after 3 miles because I wasn't registered and wanted to push Amber. I felt pretty good physically but got so dizzy in the last mile I was afraid if I didn't slow down I would pass out. This weird brain fog happens to me whenever I run fast lately. Oh well it was good to push myself since I've just had no desire at all to move fast lately.

| I had a blast running this marathon with my friend Heather. She had just ran Big Cottonwood three weeks prior and wanted to go for a BQ. She is 100% capable...but I think BC was still in her legs. Heather is truly one tough cookie. She started hitting the wall at Veyo and really hammered through and held it together incredibly well. 26.2 @ 8:26 pace. I don't really know what the official time was because I ran the first 4 miles alone until I could find Heather. I stopped at mile 4 and waited and cheered for runners until I found Heather.
Congratulations to everyone who raced so well. Many stand out performances! This was my first time really running the entire course and I really enjoyed it. My feet were not happy even at the slow pace and I'm sad that my ability to run a marathon healthy is just not even a possibility right now. I need to go to the doctor again and try to come up with a more aggressive approach rather than ignorance.

| My running sucks this year but I think I could have a solid career in pacing...if there were such a thing. I'm getting pretty good at it. Ran as Ariel and couldn't see the entire time because of my wig. 1:40:00.0! I liked the course but I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was harder than I thought it would be. I have zero, 0, nada, none, zilcho speed!

PM: 2 miles easy peasy. I've had a hard time falling asleep at night so I thought I'd see if running helped.

1-1-2-3-4-3-2-1-1-30-30-30-30
1 min rest in between, 30 sec in between the 30s, 8:27 pace.
Paces for the on's fell between 9.3-10.2mph. None of it felt comfortable and that 4 min was nearly my death but I figure one speed workout a week wont kill me. Or it might who knows.

6:00am? 5 miles with Heather, 8:30ish pace. Fun run in the sunrise! 50 pushups afterwards. Just watched the video of that and wow my pushup form is absolutely awful.
Leg #3: 12:45pm 5 miles, 7:09 pace? I don't remember. It was 82 degrees, I took a 5 hour energy prerun and felt pretty good running.:) My legs were shot but I felt like I was on crack and was talking to all the runners, drunks, taxicab drivers, ect. All was well.
Not that anyone cares but I'll just note this for anyone who does and for my memory. This was the most awful Ragnar in the history of ever. The course was completely retarded. We literally just looped up and down the same vegas streets for 200 miles. Logistics were awful and there was tons of construction. I averaged 3 major stoplights per leg and there were not cops/volunteers patroling. Dangerous! No food at exchanges or even at the end? What the heck majorly dissapointed and literally cannot believe people pay for that crap.
That said my team is fun and we always have a good time!

| Late start to the morning. My sister was running late per normal and rather than getting out and jogging around while I waited I just sat in my car and twiddled my thumb. She showed up in clown pants because she has no winter running gear. My watch was dead but we spent 30 minutes skating around SF. Just preparing for Disney on Ice tonight. It was so icy which we were not anticipating...we probably didn't make it 3 miles but since we had no watch I get to round up. :)
5 miles on the TM in winter gear that I gradually shedded until I was in my sports bra. My sincere apologies to anyone who was subject to that show.

| Tuesday TM workout with AmberD. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep this up. The gym is so fetching crappy and hot that I literally feel dizzy by the end because I'm losing so many fluids. Gross
7 x 2 min on/1 min off. These were all basically at 6:10 pace which was HARD!
6 x 1 min on/1 min off. These were all at about 6:00 pace which again was HARD!
I was hoping these dumb workouts would inflate my confidence but I fear the opposite is happening. haha oh well at least I'm trying something once a week.
Recovery was at 7.2 whatever in the crap that might be. 8.5 miles in 62 minutes.

| 5ish miles on the CIM course. We were able to get on the course at mile 8, 13, 17, 20, and 25. It was an emotional Rollier coaster for me to say the least. We had Amber, Emily, and of course Jen we were cheering for.
Mile 8: This was a surprise to Jen that AmberD and I were going to be there. We had her girls make a poster and she said the first thing she saw the poster. Her and AmberG were with the OTQ pacer and they looked incredible. I had butterflies in my stomach and Jen was so excited/shocked to see us.
Mile 13: Amber & Jen were still right with the pacer. The pack had spread out a bit and wasn't quite as big but they looked so incredibly strong.
Mile 17: Amber & Jen were leading the pack, They looked incredible. My butterflies were turning into anxiety....but good anxiety. It's going to happen!
Mile 20: Jen was a step behind Amber, her cheeks were flushed, she looked up at us but did not wave. But she was still on pace.
Corom (Jen's husband) was navigating the course and miles 21-26 were a bit more difficult to get on to.
Mile 25: waiting impatiently! I saw Amber, she was alone but she looked good. I cheered and said a quick prayer that she would make it. Where was Jen? I started frantically jogging backwards on the course, the longer it took to find her the harder I cried. Why? Why was this happening,,,where was she. I was a basket case! I ran with her for 1.5 miles with a complete mix of emotions. It is crazy how quickly things can slip away.
Jen ran a 2:48. It was a 6 minute PR but it was not what she wanted. She will get there, that I know.
My thoughts: I know that none of the three girls will ever use this as an excuse or even mention it. But in my opinion the 100% humidity was a major factor. It's just difficult to train to replace that kind of fluids when your training in Utah. When your chasing such a fast time every single little detail has to come together perfectly and I personally think, for Jen at least, it came down to fluids.
We had a 10 hour drive home after the race to talk about a lot of things. Jen is already Registered for Boston so that more than likely be her next shot.

| 9 miles on the treadmill, there was some speed involved but it was just oh so very ugly. 10 x 1 min on/off 6:00, half mile @ 6:30 pace, 3 x .25 mile @ 6:15 pace. Really really ugly like OMG I think I'm going to pass out, pausing the TM whenever I felt like it, sweating until my clothes come off type of ugly.

| Tues TM workout: I am doing AmberD training plan with her just for fun. She is motivated and thrives on having "a plan". I am unmotivated, do not feel like training for anything right now, but do have a part of my crazy that enjoys feeling like death every once in awhile. Apparently my type A personality, and weird satisfaction of killing myself is tough to shake. ha!
Anyway this workout called for a 4 mile tempo. 2 mi wu 8:00 pace and then a progressive tempo 6:53, 6:44, 6:35?, 6:27? 5 x 30 seconds @ 10.1mph + cooldown to 10 miles. I completely cheated twice and paused my TM to drink water. It really is so dang hot at the gym and I'm a weenie.

| 8 miles on the river trail with Amber, Megan, Scott, Melissa, and Jen 8:28 pace. Jen and I got into an argument this morning. We are the best of friends, arguing is healthy and fun. We were arguing about recovery/easy runs as Jen was running up ahead, running circles around us, and doubling our mileage....
My argument = I'm a firm believer that recovery is exactly what the word says and there is no such thing as too slow. I think that the harder your hard days are the easier your easy days should be. Clearly I'm not racing well now but in the past I feel like this is what has worked best for me. But maybe this is just my excuse to run slow? hahaha I wouldn't put it past me.
Jen's argument = That method doesn't work and there is no reason to run anything over an 8 min pace ever. Jen likes to do her recovery days at around ~7:15-7:45 pace and feels that running "slow" is detremental to her progress towards OTQ. I think that if she would have taken her taper week and recovery runs slower it would improve her chances of OTQ.
Obviously there is plenty of scientific research and opinions out there and I think we are both right and wrong.
I think every runner is just different and responds differently to different training. But I like to debate about it and I'd love to hear others input.
