Personal:

That's such a cool place. Was it your first time seeing the giant redwoods?

SF is so hilly. Whenever I am there for work, I typically end up just running the flat path along the bay :-) Running/walking through the city is tough. I did run over the bridge and back once, and that was pretty cool.

Phoenix Marathon 26 miles.  I ran with a cute girl I have been helping with her training.  She was aiming for 3:45-3:55 or B goal of sub-4.  It was only her second marathon but she is a very strong runner and has ran several halfs in the 1:45 range.  I do believe she was capable of her goal and I do not believe I paced her out too fast in the first half.

First half:  1:54

At mile 14 she began experiencing awful stomach cramps.  Yuck!  I felt so bad for her.  She had to stop twice to go to the bathroom and had a hard time mentally recovering.  It seems like a lot of runners had stomach problems and I am wondering if the heat had something to do with it.  The second half was pretty miserable for her fighting the cramping so we just made the best of it and made friends along the way.  She told me I could leave her but I was committed to running with her and I didn't really care to run for myself.  I ended up helping 3 girls to the finish line and we all stayed together.  We finished in 4:15.  It was a lot of walking towards the end but it was still a fun day.  It is so humbling to be in the back end of the marathon, especially one like phoenix where it became progressively hotter at the race went on!

~12.5 with Megan and my sis on the river trail, 8:38.  We were whipped after. 12 used to be a regular day and now it wipes me out!  I'm okay with it.  I'm in a different phase of life.

Real Talk - I haven't raced/competed in almost 2 years.  My body physically hit a wall and it was an absolute downward spiral.  Mentally I wanted so badly to push myself and I continued to try for a while.  My body literally wouldn't let me no matter how hard I tried.  I lived in denial for a year. I went through a midlife crisis (ha!) and ran too many marathons "for fun" which definitely didn't do me any favors.  A year ago I slowly started to accept my rapidly declining physical ability and health.

Secondary hypothalamic amenorrhea - This has been my reality for four years.  Not awesome!  I want kid’s waaaay more than I want a million dollars.  So I started working on it finally...  I reduced my mileage from 75 average to 50.  I stopped all faster running!  I worked diligently to reduce stress in my life.  I quit racing, graduated:), and started yoga and hiking.  I worked with my PCP and a fertility specialist and they both helped confirm my diagnosis.  <---This is lucky and rare as most physicians are naive to this as long as you are a normal weight.  My PCP is great!  I added iron supplements and started medication for my under active thyroid.  I threw away my scale, gained 10-12lbs and increased my bmi to 22.5.  After 6 months of still no period I did the progesterone withdrawal with no luck.  I know things like this take patience and that my genetics pretty much suck. Ha!  I struggle with jealousy as I watch much thinner runners keep their period and get pregnant without much of a problem.  I am doing better emotionally at accepting my fate and realizing this is one of my trials in life.  It could be so much worse!

I'm addicted to running, obviously.  But I'm going to gradually continue to decrease my mileage until I'm probably down to 20.  This will be hard for me but so worth it and I'm one determined girl and know I can do it.  It will not be easy for me but I have a lot of support from friends and family.

I posted all this crap mainly to try and hold myself accountable.  My husband is super supportive and has been a huge help.  The main reason I love running is because I love being outside.  So we've started hiking a lot, gardening, SITTING on horses/4-wheelers and biking leisurely together. 

I'd seriously love to hear anyones experience with this.  I understand it, and I do accept it.  I also know I'm not alone.

I have no experience in this area, and I don't even know you, but I've watched your running for quite a while and I've always been impressed with your perseverance which made you a sub 3 marathoner. i vaguely remember a conversation we had about this awhile back.

my body doesn't work as it should for that one fun monthly thing, and it hasn't for a long time. my temporary solution for it is the BC band-aid. even though it's artificial, the regulation helps me in a lot of areas. i know it's not actually fixing anything though, because i've gone without it a couple of times as a test and nothing happens.

"run less and gain weight" has always been the advice from doctors, but this was when i was actually underweight. about 4-5 years ago i gained 10-15 pounds and have held that pretty steady since then (with like a 2 month exception when i got really fit but i gained it back quickly). i can gain weight just by watching james eat chips (we actually do magic shows to demonstrate/monetize this wonderment).

as putting on more weight hasn't resolved anything, it seems that my running might be the ultimate issue. i have never heard of secondary hypothalamic amenorrhea, but i'm going to read up on it now.

i really hope you find something that works for you. russ said it well -- you possess a very high level of determination, which is great for running purposes but should also serve you well in this pursuit. best wishes, rachelle.

Infertility is a long hard road. I did have a period, but it was very short and irregular.

In a nutshell, this is what we did. Birth control -- clomid--clomid with injectable drugs -- break because I was an emotional mess -- IVF in Houston, TX. (if you want more details, I would love to share them!!)

When I took a little break, I knew that I couldn't handle this trial along. I was a HOT MESS!!! I decided that I would give it to God and if I never had children, I was going to live my life to the fullest. AND be OK with it.

Then I got pregnant with triplets. AND had a bonus exactly three years later.

Trust your instinct, find doctors you love and that listen, research...research...research. Finally, give it to God because it is SO very difficult.

Your approach to easing off the mileage is smart - just find all the ways you possibly can to be outside. Running is awesome, but I think a big part of the "addiction" (and I don't think that is a bad word in this case) is simply just an addiction to being outdoors and feeling like you are doing something productive. Hopefully you can find other passions that supplement, but don't totally replace, running.

Allie - BC worked for me as well but was just a band-aid for a short time period. I definitely think weight is not the underlying problem, but rather the running. I'll give it a good go and then go with option B, C, or D whatever those might be.

Toby!! Thank you! I've always had short and irregular periods until they dissipated almost as soon as I started running. I've gotten them back when I got up to a whopping 135+lbs (that is A LOT on my 5'2 frame and technically overweight.)
