Today I start my 18 week marathon training for the Phoenix Marathon on March 1. I will be using a structured marathon training plan for the first time in many years.  I have decided to try the Hanson Marathon Method.  The book was an interesting read and convinced me to give it a try.  One of the keys in that the weekly long run never should exeed 25-30% of the total weekly distance.  They even go as far as to say you never need to do a long run longer than 16 miles.

6 easy miles today.

They stess the importance of doing the easy miles at a slow enough pace.  For a 3:00 marathon goal easy runs are supposed to be between 7:47 and 8:23.  I was too fast today (7:37) even though I kept trying to slow down and felt like I wasn't pushing at all.  I need to do better at hitting the prescribed paces so I'll recover properly and be ready for the harder runs, which don't start until next week.

That training plan sounds interesting. Is it only in the book or can it be accessed online as well?

My wife will be running Phoenix again, too.

Dale, I'm not sure if it is on line. You should run with Amy.

Sounds like a fun 18 weeks coming up for you Rhett. Do you have a time goal for this race? Got another sub 3 in ya?

I'll have to check out that book. Cowtown is about 17 weeks away. Not sure why, but I signed up for it..again...this will be 8th consecutive (I think)

Yay! I am so excited for you!!! Can't wait to read how this new training plan goes for you! I really liked the Phoenix M. I think it will only get better. You will smash it next year. How is Doone doing? Is she running these days? Sure miss you two, lots!!!

Mack, I'm going to give a sub 3 one more shot. I don't know if I still have it in me though. It will have been 4 years since my last sub 3 when I do Phoenix and I'm only getting older.

Marc, great to hear your still running and still racing. You should get some type of life time achievment award at Cowtown for all the times you have don it.

Smooth, Hi!!! I miss reading about all the wonderful things you do every day, but understand how bussy you must be. Keep up the great work! Doone has started running again and her feet seem to be doing ok. She is going to do the local turkey trot with me next month.
