We woke up today at 6 am and it was already 66 degrees outside and new that it was going to get warm.  By race time at 7:30 it was probably 70 and still getting warmer.  By the end of the race it was 77.  I sure hope it is much cooler next week in Boston.

I was a 1:30 pacer for the race which should be right at marathon pace for me.  We got started and I had about 10 people in my pace group.  The wind was blowing pretty strong and I mentioned to those in our group that we should bank some time going out because the flags were whipping  (I'm guess close to 20 miles per hour.) and we were going to have to run back into the wind for the last 4 1/2 miles.  Those in the group wanted me to keep it at a steady 6:52 so I said OK.  By the time we hit the turn around (we had only banked 10 seconds) spot I had dropped everyone but one runner.  When we turned around we were hit with a serious wall of wind.  I told the one guy with me to get behind me and I would block the wind for as long as I could go.  I was able to hold onto the pace for about 1 mile and a half, but it was just too strong and I had to back off.  I told him I couldn't hold it any more and he kindly went ahead and let me draft off him for a couple miles until he started fading a bit and then I went back ahead, but he couldn't go with me.  He ended up finishing a bit more than a minute behind me.

I crossed the finish line in 1:30:53 feeling like I had worked way to hard to run that pace, but really I just worked way to hard running into the wind at the end of the race.

My splits were:

1 6:48

2 6:47

3 6:53

4 6:56

5 6:48

6 6:51

7 6:48

8 6:57

9 6:51

10 7:07

11 7:15

12 7:25

13 7:03

13.1  6:56 pace

I ended up getting 7th overall and 3 place in my AG and received a nice little plaque.

GREAT JOB pacing, Rhett! WOW! AWESOME WAY to stay with that pace in 20mph and heat! Doesn't that count for at least 10 min. off your time? CONGRATS on placing in your AG and 7th overall! Too bad only one guy could stay with you!

Seriously, your training is SOLID! Now you can race Boston no matter what the weather! Can't wait to see you in 7 days!

Oh Rhett, great job on your halfer! Your a hard act to follow and even harder one to catch. Too bad you pace team couldn't hold your right on pace!

From Andy on Sat, Apr 10, 2010 at 18:26:15 from 198.60.114.178

We ran pretty similar splits today but I didn't have to deal with the wind. Great job. Who are you kidding? A 1:30 half is way slower than your marathon pace.

Nice race I am sure Boston is going to be a breeze! Looks like the weather will be perfect!

Congrats on your successful pacing job!!! That's amazing that a pace group leader can take home hardware in your AG!! Nice job in that tough/hot wind. You'll do just fine in Boston! See you in a week!

Great prep for Boston.

Rhett -- You are so stinkin' hardcore!!!! What a tough windy race to pace ... and you still nailed it, blocking the wind and all. You amaze me!!! Seriously!!!

Very nice! :)

From Mack on Sun, Apr 11, 2010 at 00:22:56 from 71.111.186.66

Nice job Rhett! 1:30 in that kind of wind? You are so very ready for Boston.

From Burt on Sun, Apr 11, 2010 at 01:03:01 from 98.177.220.145

The wind wasn't so bad last year, but it was definitely at our backs the last 4.5. Did Kuck win again?

From Kerry on Sun, Apr 11, 2010 at 13:33:22 from 70.101.194.197

great seeing you and great race Rhett! Your great preparation will carry you to a great day at Boston!

From DonGardinero on Sun, Apr 11, 2010 at 15:38:38 from 75.162.190.158

You did an awesome job in tough conditions. What is up with all the wind lately?!!!

From Rhett on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 14:34:54 from 74.41.249.102

Thanks everyone. I so excited to see many of you this week in Boston.

Burt, yep Dan won again. Some guy from Flagstaff came down saying he was going to run a 1:08 without problems. He ended up doin like 1:19 and Dan did 1:16. He has won the race all 3 years it has been run.

From Burt on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 15:05:36 from 206.19.214.144

Kuck. LOL. I spelled his name wrong.

What do Flagstaffians know? Nothing! Actually, a gal from Flagstaff was the top female in the last race I did. I'm just bitter because my worst races in high school were in Flagstaff. Do you ever have those dreams where you are running as hard as you can, but you don't get anywhere? That's what it's like.

From timp on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 11:20:02 from 144.189.100.25

nice run Rhett. That's a great workout the week before Boston. You are primed and ready to run a fast one.

From Kelli on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 14:07:51 from 71.219.92.128

Nice work!!! That is a bummer about the wind, it really affects fast runners (us slower runners get the affects, I just do not think it is as bad, we have more meat on us to block the wind or something).

Bummer that none of the 10 were able to get their 1:30, especially that last guy. Oh well, had the wind not been there I am sure he could have done it.

Here is to NO wind and great weather in Boston, PLEASE!!!!!

From Huans32 on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 16:56:15 from 138.64.8.52

Great job on the tough windy course. Too bad there wasnt more that could keep up with you. Granted that is a fast pace even without the wind.
