went back to my heaviest cushioned shoe the dreaded NB 1062  to protect my strained calf. it seems to have worked as I didn't have any problems, aside from hating the heavy rigid shoes. 9.1 miles.

then I switched into my new nike frees for another 4 miles. don't really know what to say about them. the five fingers and 790s are a much more natural running shoe, but the free has more cushioning. I will leave it in the rotation before passing judgment. important thing now is to protect the calves next week. I may incorporate one day of water running per week to help things out and maybe also do more cross training as I can't seem to break over 50 miles a week right now on the pavement without getting in trouble.

13.15 total miles 7:35 average.

That's quite the closet full of shoes your acquiring there!

Does your form/stride change much when you wear different types of shoes?

I try to maintain the same form, but the heavy cushioned shoes with big heels are designed for heel striking making it hard not to. Heel striking is a lot less stress on the calves, but causes shin splints and tibial tendonitis for me. Best solution I think is just to stay off pavement and concrete, but here in Logan we have few options in that regard unless you go into the mountains and trail run. My ideal running location would be Corvallis Oregon and the logging roads/dirt trails there.

I like your shoe analysis. I am coming to some of the same conclusions myself. When my achilles and calves are tight, its definitely easier to run in more cushioned shoes. But it is easier to keep good form in flatter shoes.

Great run!
