really tough run today, maybe my worst ever. I ran out of gas at about 15 miles. After than I felt like I was in some kind of out of body experience, hallucinating, light headed. I intended to go 22 but made 21.1. felt like I was running about a 9 minute pace the last 5 or so so was pleased to see my garmin say 7:37 average when I finished. so the pace was OK I guess.
trying to figure out why I got so tired. I took four shot blocks and some cytomax so I had the sugar. it was my third week of 20 milers in  a row, coming off no more than 14-15 for the weeks before that. I am trying to get some of these long runs out of the way so I can still try for a decent time at the TOU half before doing TOU. I can't figure out why they put that three weeks before the marathon since it would be better as a tuneup 2 weeks out. I don't really want to run another 7-8 after the half. oh well. back to the couch. I am done for the day.

enjoy the couch.

A long run in the bank. You can't go wrong with that.I wish I was doing TOU, but there were more good reasons not to.

Good luck with the training.

Oh yeah, and the Cytomax!

Have you ever read the claims they make on the side of the container? It's magic. I always feel like I should be able to run a 2:10 or something after injesting the stuff.

I wonder if USATF and the IOC know about it?

From Scott Ensign on Sat, Aug 14, 2010 at 22:06:28 from 65.100.220.129

Allie, thanks I did enjoy a completely lazy day. not by choice though.

Rob- I am starting to think I have a lot of good reasons not to do TOU as well, mostly of a motivational nature and desire not to torture myself anymore. I will have to read the cytomax claims, I just drink it because my brother does. Maybe I can force myself to believe the claims and get some sort of placebo effect performance gain out of them... or maybe the stuff in there caused my hallucination problems today!

Way to get out there. Glad you decided to run TOU since you are so fit.

Were you running down the Logan River Trial around 8:40-9:00 this morning? I thought I saw someone very similar to the man in your photo.

I agree with the 3 weeks thing. They should make it 2 or even 4 weeks before TOU, but 3 is just about everyone's long run...Maybe we could request that for next year.

Scott - At the race yesterday I was talking to a couple guys about Dennis Simonaitis. You know Dennis is 47 now, but still continues to crank out incredible times year after year and even remain competative with the newly turned 40 guys. And he's been doing it for years too, qualifying for the Olympic trials back in the 1980s as well. The consensus was that he's expert at listening to his body - knowing when to push, when to back off, avoiding racing when it he's not ready or when it doesn't suit his goals.

Contrast that with Steve Anderson from Logan. I think Steve is an incredibly talented runner who could compete on the national level as a Master. He might have as much talent as Dennis. But he keeps pounding himself, both in training and in frequent racing. I worry that he won't last.

Jason- yeah that was me, and I realized it was you right after you went by. I would have stopped to chat but without my cochlear implant I am pretty helpless. Maybe we will pass again next Saturday?

Rob, Dennis is really amazing, an inpiration for old guys like me, I would love to see how he trains. I ran carslbad this year where he set the 47 year old record. Amazing. And I agree about listening to your body. Right now my body says, make it through TOU and then take a well deserved break. which I will.

I don't have any aspirations to break into the masters scene, I am not that talented or dedicated, I just like running the local races and getting an age group win occasionally, and hopefully stay healthy. I will be happy if I can run a 2:55 at TOU. If I can do that, maybe I will set my sites on 2:50 for the next one?

From Steve Piccolo on Sun, Aug 15, 2010 at 15:09:35 from 155.101.243.223

Scott, we all know you are more than capable of running below 2:55 or even 2:50 as long as you are healthy for TOU. No pressure, though. :)

Some days are just like that...

I actually prefer 3 weeks after the last half before the full TOU- 2 weeks is just a hair close in my opinion.
