Got a free entry to the SLC half from a friend whose work sponsors employees + a friend., otherwise this one is too expensive for my blood. Met Steve Anderson at West High and we got a ride to the top from my friend's son. Beautiful weather, very little wind and warm. I was shooting for  1:21 but kind of crashed the last few miles, got passed by a few people, bummer. Maybe I went out too fast, but it is hard not to on that initial downhill. The hill up State street was tough. finished 6th in men's masters and a way distant 2nd in 45-49 behind Rob Murphy's 1:15:26.  Steve Anderson destroyed the course, i got to see him and shout at him once at the hairpin turn, I assume that gave him the motivation he needed. Bugged out after the race to go watch my son's tennis match.

Garmin splits: 5:58, 6:14, 6:00, 6:01, 6:27, 6:17, 6:13, 6:23, 6:23, 6:30, 6:34, 7:13, 6:10. 6:04 for 0.02 miles.

Got some blisters, haven't been doing enough downhill training i guess. Actually, haven't done any. oh well.

Good luck to all the Boston runners Monday!!!!!

Wow, Scott! Great time. You really didn't drop off that much at the end. That 7:00 mile is understandable due to the hill on State St. You wouldn't think it would be that hard, but it's at a difficult point in the race. I see you breaking 1:20 for sure this year.

Great job Scott. I thought I had a chance of beating you today, but I ended up about 22 minutes behind you. Oh well, maybe never! :-)

Great run Scott!!! Boy are you putting in some great SW!! so do you think this course is easier than Riverton or are you just speedier in the past few weeks?

From Paul on Sat, Apr 17, 2010 at 22:22:57 from 174.27.225.89

Good job. That's pretty quick!

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Apr 17, 2010 at 23:50:46 from 98.202.182.29

Hey Scott, great race to you too. I know what you mean, I had hoped to hang with Steve for a while today and actually went out in under 5:20. But I could barely see him on the horizon!Anyway, 1:22 is a solid effort and you are definitely improving. Maybe I'll meet you after a race soon.

Wow...very nice time out there for a half. Way to go.

Nice race Scott -

You are a racing machine lately!

From Jon on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 11:16:19 from 75.169.159.140

You're turning into Walter, with tons of great race performances!

From Steve on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 15:30:22 from 64.134.146.120

Scott, it was nice spending the morning with you guys. I totally lost you in that mad, crazy pre-marathon crowd. That mile up State street kicked all our butts. I have 4 really good blisters to show for the day as well!

From Bec on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 15:47:11 from 76.23.55.210

Nicely done my friend. Good luck with those well earned blisters.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 17:08:10 from 67.40.116.131

thanks for the nice comments guys!!

Steve P- did they add that State street hill last year? I ran this in 2008 and could swear the route didn't go up that hill? I wasn't counting on it anyway, ouch.

Julie, I think this course is easier than Riverton with the net elevation drop, but the downhills make it tough on the legs. But I think I have improved a bit in the last 3 weeks (I hope).

Steve A - I lost my Riverton friends at the start too, had to head to the trees like you, then avoid getting arrested for crossing the trax tracks. Bad bad starting line logistics with the tracks and chain link fences. They really ought to do some kind of wave start probably.

Great race Scott! Nice to get those mile splits on the Garmin. I ran the 5k there a few years ago which followed the last 3 miles of the marathon course and it was very flat. Must have been a course change.

From Steve Piccolo on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 20:37:07 from 66.60.122.240

Yeah, I think last year was the first time they had the hill at the end. Driving up State St it doesn't seem as hilly as when you're running it at the end of a half. But looking at the TOU half, it also appears to have a good hill in mile 12. ARe you running that this year? I'm thinking of doing it.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 21:13:01 from 67.40.116.131

I knew that hill had to be new! Maybe I am not crazy afterall.

Steve, I don't know if I will do TOU half this year, though it is a really good race and you should definitely put it on the list if you are doing a fall marathon, and you can stay at my place which is in Providence near the finish and bus pickup. I am thinking of taking a break from "training" style running after memorial day so I can just enjoy the summer: camp, hike, bike, heal my calves and shin. I have already over-raced this year I think.

From Burt on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 21:58:57 from 98.177.220.145

Nice job rooster! Sorry you slowed down there at the end, but you were so far ahead of most everyone else anyway.

LOL JD! You almost had him.

From Matt on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 23:11:02 from 76.23.0.103

Scott, Sorry I didn't hook up with you at the start but I was off to a very late start. I was super impressed when I saw your name on the 1/2 board. I think I want to try the half next time. I did the 5K in 2006 and it was easier then. That Marathon is a bear but you would do awesome. Let me know what other races your doing down this way. If nothing else I am running St. George and I am planning on Hobble Creek. Congrats again.
