ran the world's fastest 5K this morning.  unfortunately it wasn't  the world's fastest for me. I decided to run this on the spur of the moment at the expo Saturday afternoon, just so I could say I ran it. Signed up at the expo paying the ridiculous last minute race fee of 50 dollars. That's about 16 bucks a mile. Oh well, it's the 25th anniversary of the 5000 and I was there, so what the heck.

The men's masters is the first race of the day, 7:05 AM. I drove down from the avocado farm, arriving at 6:30 and found my Logan training partners Carol Rowe and Paul Wolf who also ran. Carol's race was at 10AM so she kept my cochlear implant for me while I ran, that was nice. Paul and I warmed up about 1.6 miles. Then we went to the start. I learned a valuable lesson here the hard way- do NOT get stuck back in the pack at the start of this race, with 1500+ over eager 40+ year olds with a lot of testosterone and enthusiasm. Runners were supposed to line up based on predicted finish times, but a bunch of amateurs packed the line making for a big mess. Gun went off and I spent about the first 0.75 miles just muscling through the pack to get some space. Lot's of jostling and elbows, very crowded. Things didn't settle down for about a mile. Draper's Dennis Simonaitis was right at the front at the first turn, he ended up second overall in 14:45, just 5 seconds behind the winner who was five years younger than him.  Just saw he set the American age group record for 47 year olds, wow!!

Me, I finished in 18:01, 21st in my age group. Not as strong a showing as I would have liked coming from altitude, but I didn't start smart, getting stuck in traffic, I hadn't trained for this race, ran a hard 15 miler the day before, and didn't have my standard race kit (I wore my NB 790 trail shoes). Excuses, excuses.

After the race I bugged out, back to the house, showered, gathered the family, and was on the road to Cache Valley by 8:35 AM. Set a new driving speed record arriving home in exactly 11 hours and 20 minutes (800 miles even). One stop in St George to get gas, that was it. And a few ranch exit potty breaks for the boys and dog.

And thus ends another spring break adventure.. disneyland, california adventure, the beach, carlsbad 5000... overall a good week.

nice spur-of-the-moment race! great time on the road trip as well. sounds like you had a fun week.

Not too shabby for an old man!

From Dave S on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 13:52:17 from 4.254.224.141

I agree. That is pretty awesome for an old man! Especially after the hard 15 miler yesterday.

Dennis is amazing. I think the AG record he broke was his own from 2 years ago at 14:47. He's not too shabby for an old man either.

From Scott Ensign on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 14:11:21 from 71.35.221.167

thanks guys!

old man... now I feel much better... thanks Cody..

Dave- watching Dennis and the lead pack was fun. the course is kind of neat because you get a view of the leaders at two turns. the difference between an 18 minute and 15 minute 5K is a quantum leap, I don't know how these guys do it. talent, dedication, drive I guess. pretty impressive.

From Paul on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 15:01:49 from 204.113.19.55

Nice job, too bad about getting stuck behind folks. Still sounds like fun. I saw Dennis' result yesterday, and am amazed by him. I've been amazed by him for the last 8 years, since I've moved here. The guy just is not slowing down.

Great job, Scott! Sounds like a fun race and trip.

I love that picture Scott. Nice run.

From Steve on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 15:58:13 from 198.60.8.33

Great race Scott! You took a minute off your prediction, right? That would be a hard race to do with that many runners. Dennis set an american masters record last month in the 10K as well. He is on game this year!

From Scott Ensign on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 21:52:33 from 71.35.223.135

Paul, I am in awe of Dennis, I wish I could run like that! Steve- I really wanted to run 17:30, was kind of sandbagging my hoped for time. It was a great race just to experience and have a good time, I learned a lot about strategy and can improve next time. Probably in two years when I am 50, as I will be at the bottom of an age bracket then instead of nearing the top.

Also Steve- I will be doing the SLC half with a friend in SLC- do you need a shuttle to the top before or after?

From Jon on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 22:21:06 from 75.169.142.145

That's a pretty good time for a spur of the moment race. Nice job. Love the picture.

From Jon on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 22:21:54 from 75.169.142.145

That is a lot of money, though- I really don't like paying more than $3 per mile, or $5 max!

From Scott Ensign on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 22:49:06 from 71.35.223.135

Jon, yeah, it would have been a little cheaper if I had had the foresight to sign up in January. tremonton turkey trot was the best deal I have run. 30 cents a mile, including a t-shirt, and a turkey for winning the age group! we should all go down this fall and sweep the turkeys.

From Steve Piccolo on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 23:19:08 from 66.60.122.240

Scott, I wish I was running the SLC half. Not within my budget this year. It's a fun course. You'll probably like it, except for the uphill in mile 12. I'm due for a PR in a half though, so I need to run one sometime.

From Kelli on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 14:02:51 from 71.219.92.128

That is a crazy fast race. How do they draw so many people to this 5k??

Glad you had a great time on your trip. I am amazed at the fact you made it with so few stops on the way home. How did you do that? Did you pack food????

From Scott Ensign on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 20:05:43 from 129.123.3.31

Kelli, this race holds the men's and women's 5K road race world records so is the most famous 5K out there. They pay big prize money too to attract the elite runners. Subsidized by us folks running in steerage of course!

Our kids travel well, we have them trained for long hauls. DVDs, books, gameboys.. and yes we carry food too, saves $$ and time. We don't always highball it this fast but I had to get them back for a school night.

From Kelli on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 20:08:12 from 71.219.92.128

I am impressed! We have all the toys and TV going, and we pack food and water, yet we end up stopping constantly!!!!

Cool to be part of such a "famous" race!
