No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

We went to the park for a picnic lunch after church today. After we ate, Jake went fishing, Kym decided to take a nap in the shade and I went for a run/hobble around the lake on my crutches. It was a very long mile and a better workout than I expected. I hope I am off of these things before I am up to doing a 5k. Should I count that mile on my shoe tracker if I was only wearing one? :)

Still hobbling around on crutches today. The doc says its probably mild compartment syndrome and it will get better with time. I looked up compartment syndrome and it sounds pretty scary, and not at all like something I want to just wait out if that's what it is. I'm seeing another doc for a second opinion tomorrow.

PM: I spent an hour on the hand-bike at the Y after work. My arms are dead and my knee still hurts, but I feel much better otherwise, and I think I might have talked my son into doing their 12 week fitness plan with me.

I went to a different doc today for a second opinion. The news was still not good, but he spent lots of time explaining everything to me and actually showed me everything he was concerned about on the MRI films. (very different approach than the first doc.) He also eased my worries about compartment syndrome. What I have is a fractured tibia in addition to my injured hammie, but fortunately it's not bad enough to need a cast. I am however stuck with the crutches until I can walk with zero pain. Once I get there I can start biking. Running is not even an option for about 6 weeks. The good news is that the doc said a late Fall marathon was still in the cards for me if I'm good! I went to the Y with Kym after my visit and spent 45 min on the hand-bike. At least I can still get some cardio in while I'm resting the leg and it's about time I put some effort into building up my wimpy uper body anyway.

I did 60 minutes on a Sci-Fit hand-bike today at the Y. Just getting around the locker room on a wet floor with crutches is kind of an extreme sport in itself :)

Last month I won a $100 gift card for amazon.com just for bicycle commuting to work so today I used part of it to order a Polar HR transmitter. All of the Sci-fit machines (and I think the Precor machines too) have a program where you can set a desired HR and the work load will adjust accordingly, but they only work with Polar HRMs. I'm hoping this will make the hand-bike a little more interesting and useful for cardio training. I think I'll probably use it on the elliptical too once I can get on it.

60 minutes on tbe hand-bike again this morning.

I had a proud parenting moment yesterday that only people here would understand. We were at my grandson's 3rd birthday party and my 20 year old daughter who has been running quite a bit lately says "look at this dad, my little toenail fell off". I said "congratulations, you're a runner now!" We both laughed and did a big high five while everyone else just looked at us in disbelief :)
