Somehow they didn't get finish times for anybody in the race so all I have is my garmin for an unofficial PR time. The course was also a bit long since they changed it to go around the far side of the library, so subtracting .1 off either end of this course would have given me the sub-19 I was jonesin' for (18:48). Maybe I'll do the 5k instead of the 20k at the end of the series and try to make it official.

Overall it was still a fun morning. Kym, Karina, and Danny ran it with me and I even beat a couple of more experienced, talented, and younger runners that I've been looking up to for a long time. What a great way to start the year!

Next up... sub 40:00 10k on 1/22

Distance    Split pace
1.00    6:07
2.00    6:07
3.00    5:58
3.20    5:18

3:15pm

My little hotties were still warm and I didn't want them to go to waste so I went out again to make it an even 10 for the day.

Distance    Split pace
1.00    6:59
2.00    7:02
3.00    6:59
4.00    6:56
5.00    6:42
6.00    6:44
6.84    6:26

UPDATE: "Official" results are up now. I'm not sure how they determined the times, but they have me down for 19:23 instead of 19:15 and still 4th out of 10in my age division. That is still better than last year so I can't complain about a new PR on a long course. I'm 2nd in my division out of the 5 that registered for the whole series and Dale was first of those. Looks like he's gonna steal my thunder this year. Go Dale!

Nice job.

Was the course different from last year? I thought we went around the end of the library then too? My Garmin recorded 3.24 versus 3.15 last year, so maybe something was different. It sure felt longer, or maybe I just felt slower.

From Tom on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 17:30:24 from 67.199.180.90

Good job and congrats on unofficial PR!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 17:46:45 from 76.121.76.165

Dale - I looked back at my GPS tracks from last year and they didn't change the course until the 15 and 20k races. Both the 5 and 10k courses cut to the inside of the library at the corner last year. It also looks like the turn around on Stevens was even a little farther out this time. I wonder if it's necessary to recertify a course if it is still "at least" the length stated?

Here's a map of the course as certified: http://www.usatf.org/events/courses/maps/showMap.asp?courseID=WA06022BL

It looks like they updated all the certs last year except for the 5 and 10k courses, but they also run those two around the library for the same safety reasons.

Thanks Tom! I also did a 4 miler at 6:04 pace in July which equates to an unofficial sub 19 5k, but I can't seem to pull it off officially. Maybe I just need to race more often. Or maybe I should just quit worrying about it. It's just a number right? nahh, it must be done :)

From Dale on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 17:56:10 from 69.10.215.11

Wow, a small but substantial difference in the routing with the turn past the library. Basically, the anti-tangent route.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 18:05:25 from 76.121.76.165

Yeah, I need to keep that extra tenth or so in mind when I pick my goal pace for the 10k.

From april27 on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 19:19:40 from 99.188.251.180

Great PR! You are starting this year off on the right foot!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 19:29:30 from 76.121.76.165

yeah, I really hit the ground running huh? ;)

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 19:31:32 from 24.10.248.6

Great race. You're getting faster every year.

Maybe we don't need to get old?

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 19:39:23 from 76.121.76.165

Thanks Rob, that speed sure didn't come without a lot of hard work for an old guy like me. It kind of makes me wonder what I would have been capable of back in highschool if I was running instead of smoking.

From Twinkies on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 19:52:43 from 24.2.82.73

Great race. I would count that as sub 19, even if it is not official. Good luck on the 10k.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 20:33:03 from 76.121.76.165

Thanks Twinkies. If I count this one, I may as well have counted the 4 miler in July :(

I'm already thinking about a sub 19 second half for that 10k. I could feel pretty good about counting that :)

From allie on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 20:35:25 from 174.23.238.75

awesome race, and congrats on the PR -- i think it's official.

little hotties. little hotties. best product suggestion of the year.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 20:36:17 from 67.2.114.66

Congrats on the wonderful race and making good use of your little hotties!!!!

Happy New Year!

From DLTheo on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 22:31:07 from 67.183.227.41

Great job today! You ran a good, smart race! Don't get too used to being ahead of me, though :) You and Preston have been spurring me and Carl on to better running in our old age!

From JimF on Sat, Jan 01, 2011 at 22:42:33 from 68.46.211.156

Great job on the race and way to start off the New Year!

From Burt on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 13:13:35 from 173.87.186.51

Nice job. You have the fastest "unofficial" race pace of the year on the blog.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 15:12:47 from 75.196.28.200

Allie and Teena - little hotties are a close second for the best investment I ever made in my training.

Scott - It would be a lie if I said I didn't feel a little too proud of myself when I passed you. Funny how quickly God humbles us though :) My fastest race ever with no finish time or AG award.

Jim - Thanks, I really look forward to this race every year. I think this is 7 in a row now.

Burt - Dale beat me in this race, I just took the liberty of entering 3.2 for the race distance.

From Kelli on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 17:21:14 from 71.219.84.215

WOW, you never cease to amaze me! Dang the course for being long and messing with the sub-19, but you KNOW you did it!!

From Laputka on Sun, Jan 02, 2011 at 20:13:28 from 98.202.142.68

wow, you did it! you're one fast dude! I can't believe your time only gave you a 4th place AG finish. A sub 19 pace should put you on the podium. Tough competition 'round your parts I'd say. Congratulations.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Jan 06, 2011 at 00:26:04 from 76.121.76.165

Results are up now and they have 19:23 for my time. Still a PR :)

Kelli - Thanks, I still need to do it for real. Maybe at Run for Tina on 1/29?

Laputka - I didn't stand a chance in my AG this year. There are some fast old dudes(40-44) around here! My friends Scott and Carl were 23 and 33 seconds behind me and they got 1st and 2nd place in the 35-39 AG.

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 06, 2011 at 13:45:48 from 71.219.84.215

Congrats on the PR either way. It is a bummer when the slower young guys place and you do not! Darn fast old geezers, trip one of them next time!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sat, Jan 08, 2011 at 19:29:42 from 76.121.76.165

I added a few pics to my race report if anybody wants a good laugh :)

From Burt on Sat, Jan 08, 2011 at 19:37:29 from 72.223.84.236

I want a good laugh! Look at that guy behind you. His outside leg is right on the inside of the curb. Did he fall right after the picture was taken?

From Kelli on Sun, Jan 09, 2011 at 15:50:19 from 71.219.84.215

Love Kym's oufit!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Sun, Jan 09, 2011 at 16:46:00 from 76.121.76.165

Burt - He didn't fall but it sure looks that way in the pic.

Kelli - Kym was rockin' the snowflake jammies for sure :)
