Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:


Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

No ambition today. 

Confession: shins have been bothering me a bit, but it usually fades by the first 1/4 mile or so. It used to bother me after a run (funny walking) but they have gotten better with icing, stretching and my style of scraping them. This morning, it never faded - they hurt the whole darn cotton-pickin' time! Icing is now on the docket for the rest of the day.

New 4 mile route - hill of death in the middle. It's not too bad, it's just 1+ miles of gradual decent uphill. I do like this better than the other 4 mile route I usually do with the jogger though, so it will probably become a regular. Nice flat/downhill at the beginning and end. It's nice to begin and end on a good note :) Felt slow and heavy the whole run, I hope these shin splints go away soon!

AP: 9:11 splits:  9:09, 8:57, 9:45, 8:59, 8:38 (last .25)

Kept the miles short, because I'm hiking with my sister today. DN gave you a free tram pass for Snowbird, so we're going to take the tram up then hike down -yup, the lazy way :)  I think it's about 4-5 miles, so I didn't want to overextend my legs since I want to try and hit 7 miles tomorrow. It will just me her and I (and baby Fartlek of course), so it will be nice to not have any kids to motivate/bribe down the trail. It should go much faster.

HAVE FUN!!! Take care of those shins, i hope the downhill hiking does not aggravate them at all!

Your paces are great and I am sure that is why you feel heavy and tired while running them!

So you have any compression sleeves? I think they help with shin pain. I had them after Ogden and went away wearing compression sleeve as recovery while walking.

Devine, mountain women, have fun, always great to hike. By the way, stay away from running downhill for a few days, don't want those shins to develope a stress fracture. Very tough to get out with a little one, very nice effort.

Nancy, I always seem to be plagued with them, Tuesday's run was just particularly bad.

Kelli, thanks. I don't think the downhill hiking bothered them much at all. I wish I could feel as light as I thought I would after Adam was born :)

Smooth, I may have to look into the sleeves. I seem to get shin splints on and off quite often, and if they help I'm all for it!

KP, I have a sling I wear and he just stays cuddled up in there the whole time. Happy as a little bug in a rug! I might be able to post a pic...

Brent, I couldn't remember if it was up or downhill that was worse for the shins so thanks for the reminder! The mountain women had an amazing time, I don't know how you could do 15 miles of trail running!!

Toby, prevention I'm not sure of. Stretching your calves and the front of your legs (I kneel down with toes pointed then lean back/sit up straight to stretch the fronts) then icing and 'hand massage' is how I treat them. Usually works pretty well, and you can even tape them while you run. That has helped me tremendously in the past...I just don't usually have time to do it in the morning.

I roll my feet and ankles around in circles before a run. That seems to warm up and stretch the lower part of my leg.
