Short-Term Running Goals: Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal. It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :) I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!
Long-Term Running Goals:
Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.
Run for the rest of my life!
Personal: 4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!
Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free! I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front. After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM. Favorite Blogs: |

Ahh March! I feel spring in the air...I'm planning on doing a little yard work today, oohhh AND I came home from the gym and felt confident enough to open some windows and turn the heater off. I may regret it once the sun stops shinning in the windows, but right now it's AMAZING!! 45 minutes on elliptical @ L10 - 3.5 miles 45 minutes walking on TM 10% incline @ 3.2 mph If all goes well, I can start my 1 min run, 9 min walk intervals on Friday. Happy March and Good-bye months of Goose egg mileage!!! (I'm hoping there isn't a cap on how many months you can go goose-eggs...I'm almost getting worried I'll get kicked of the RUNNING blog for not running!)

| | Thanks to a bad dream, quick little footsteps into my bedroom and a mountain climb into my bed by my wonderful 2 yr old at 3:56 AM this morning...I decided to go to the early morning (5AM) spin class in Lehi (a 25 min drive). You MUST be there by 4:40 if you want a bike. Since I was up and wasn't comfortably sleeping I left my baby in the good care of his father and trudged off. Spin @ 5 was CRAZY hard, maybe I was just tired, but it was the hardest class I've taken from this teacher (he's the usual Saturday teacher). Muscle Mix @ 6 - GREAT workout, legs were feeling it - not sure I could run a race after a hard ride! drove home...slept for 10-15 minutes while kids showered. Got them off to school, then off to where else? The gym :) Body Sculpting class - not nearly as hard as muscle mix, maybe because I got some rest? 35 min TM walking 12% grade @ 3.2 mph Dr appt today, baby is still snug as a bug in a rug and happy. Unfortunately, mom's weight shot up WAY too much this month - that's what a bunch of valentines crap and birthday crap sitting around for weeks will do to you!!

| | HEY...HEY...LOOK! Miles...miles! I've got miles!! Okay, just a 1/2 a mile, but still I RAN I RAN!! I had to work today at 10, so I only got an hour at the gym (I was too lazy to go early when the alarm went off this morning). However, it was enough to get in my first run since Christmas EVE! I got on the TM, walking 10% grade @ 3.2 mph. Then after 9 minutes I got to run (I lowered the grade of course to 1%). I ran one minute @ 6.2 mph. I just started feeling the groove then looked down - 10 seconds left of my run. STINK! It went too fast. I still got to repeat the walk/run 4 more times, but it all went too fast. So, I probably did just a bit more than a 1/2 but I'm going to count it as a 1/2 since I can't figure it out exactly. Total of 55 min Walking 5 min of running! YAY!

| | Did my first Tri this morning, reverse of course. Couldn't sleep @ 4 this morning anyway, so I got up and headed to the gym. 50 minutes on the TM - 9 min of walking 1 min running, I finished the last minute of running with an additional one, so 2 min in a row :) Total: 49 min walking @ 10% grade 3.2 mph & 6 min running @ 6.5 mph 1% grade.
90 min spin class today. It was a Good class - drenched afterward. I really liked the hill intervals (speed work, but with lots of resistance, felt like hill sprints!).
1 mile swim in approx 40 min. I timed the last 2 quarters and they were just over and under 10 min, so I'll say 40 to round things out. I did stop and rest each quarter though, so total elapsed time was longer. Great workout and makes me excited to do a tri sometime, but a reverse one of course - I hate to be swim pool wet. I also had a great time hanging out with Becca, I don't know how I'd get through this 'recovery' if it wasn't for her company each Saturday!!

So, another Monday *sigh* 60 minutes on the TM: 8 min walking 10% grade @ 3MPH; then run 2 min 1% grade @ 6.5 mph. Repeat it 5 times, total of 10 min running, 40 min walking @ grade - 10 min cool-down at 5% grade. Weights; mostly upper body on the bosu ball - I think I hit all the major muscles. Core on bosu and 2-legged weighted and single leg squats on the ball. Home; stretch and foam roll.... Now for the rest of Monday *sigh*

Repeated for a total of 12 min running 48 min walking. off to a busy day, but now I'm finally home and ready for a busy evening!

| | I was really tired and unmotivated today! Last night, sleeping and this morning were just ughh. Went to yoga, and after I was relaxed thinking about getting on the TM was hard. But knowing how close I am to getting back to consistent running pushed me over the edge. Laced up the shoes and hopped on. Only 40 min until daycare time was up, so I did what I could. I was only going to do 2 min intervals, because I've been scared to move up to 3 min - seems too hard, sometimes at 2 minutes I'm ready for a rest (sad, I know! I'm afraid I'll never run a 5K again!). 2- Two minute intervals running @ 9:13mm, 3- Three minute intervals @ 9:13 mm, and I pushed out an extra 13 seconds to make it a full even mile in 3 min intervals :) I felt better about 1/2 way through and was willing to push the first 3 min interval, and even decided to add an extra one on. Three minutes seems a lot easier than 2, simply because I get over the 'hump' of tiredness. Total 13+ min running @ 9:13 pace; 27 min walking 10% grade @ 3mph.

| | Tired of being a single parent this week...can't wait to go to the airport tonight and pick up my better half!! Oral presentation at school and kindergarten pick-up limited my gym time today, but I tried to make the most of it! 60 min total on the TM. Six - 3 min running intervals @ 9:13mm (every few I'd add on the extra 13 seconds to make a full mile). The rest of the time was walking 10% grade @ 3 mph. Total of 4.2 miles between walking and running. uggghhh, seriously I know I've been keeping up the cardio, but running is so different! I'm afraid I'm never going to run MILES at a time!! I am grateful that through the running I've had no pain in the hip or round ligament pain in the belly - small miracles. Can't wait to break up the monotony of the TM and get outside and run! It's too nice and I'm getting gym dread again.

| | My day/morning/workout got all messed up! After getting home groggily at 12:30AM after picking hubby up from the airport I set my alarm and went to bed -ooops! At 6:30 AM (after forcing myself back to sleep, because I needed all I could get and kept waking up) I cracked open the eyes and realized it was light. It's not light at 5:00!!! STINK! My alarm was set for PM. After contemplating bagging it all, I jumped out of bed hoping that it would be my lucky day and a spin bike would still be open 5-10 min after class started. Well, good things better - I got a bike and started class only about 7 minutes late! Did spin for the hour, then got talked into staying for the next class- muscle mix (cardio and weights/60 min), not too bad - worked the IT really well! Then, I was dreading heading off to the TM....dang thing! -and no Becca to entertain me :( Decided to hit the indoor track instead - 8 laps/mile so I walked 3 ran 4 until I had 2 running miles complete. Then out of curiosity and wonder I decided to try a full mile...all at once! I wanted to know about how fast my AP had been on the rest of the running, so I grabbed my phone (stop watch) and set off. It was hard at first to not try and race the clock, but I kept it nice and smooth (except weaving in and out of walkers and strollers) and finished in 9:17, which is about what I've been doing on the TM! I was SO surprised, it felt SO much better than the TM has ALL week. I guess maybe I can run again :) Total just shy of an hour on the track (3 mi run/2.25 walk), and a wonderful ending to a crazy morning! Oh, and this run made it official: I HATE THE TREADMILL!!

I need a new style that will have better cushioning for a 'heavier' runner (since I'm running for 2 now :) ) Did a shorter workout at the gym today, playing volleyball tonight and I need some fuel left in the tank. 60 min on the TM 5 min on 5 min off. Walking was at 6% grade at 3.7 mph and running was at a 9:05mm pace. Felt good, and went quickly because I had Kelli to talk to! Oh how I miss my long Saturday runs with running friends! I can't wait to get back at it!

Working off cookie dough sitting on my thighs today :) Boot camp - HARD workout/weights! I think I'll be sore tomorrow. Had us run a .2 outside for a cardio burst, felt good to be on the 'road'! Hit the TM - 35 min total: walk 5 min, run 1 mile @ 9:05mm, walk 3 min, run 1 mile @ 9:05mm, walk 3 min, run .55 @ 9:05, cool down. Twice I got to run a full mile! Short break between, but I'm loving getting in a full mile and feeling like I have more to give! I would've done 3 full, but had to get home to babysit. ***such a beautiful day, took the kids to daybreak lake in the evening and walked & pushed stroller while 2 older kiddos rode bikes. GREAT 1 hour walk. Only bad decision was wearing flip flops for the first time this season. Sore feet!***

I was going to run 2-3, but had to dial it back due to how I was feeling. TM 25 min: walking 6% grade @ 3mph then 5 min running at 10mm pace. Walk some more, run one more 5 min. Done.

Still not sleeping well, but feeling better today. Full body sculpting class this morning. Oh my...I think she killed my legs!! 35 min on the TM: 5 min walking 6% grade for .25 miles, then ran 1.25 miles (yes I can put the "s" on the end!!) @ 9:05mm; walk again on grade for .25, then ran 1.25 miles @ 9:05mm, final cool down walk for .20 until I stopped sweating profusely :)
Felt good on the running. I WILL get new shoes today!! (and a belly band, occasionally I get a little achy on the round ligaments. I want to stop it before it get debilitating!)

| | sleep, schmeep....sleep is over rated, who needs it? I was scared of the cold. I was going to run a 5K on the road here at home before spin, but chickened out. I also didn't want to change into 'gym' clothes after sweating in 'warm' clothes...pathetic excuses, but that's what you get while lying in bed at 4:45 after 5 hours of sleep. So, I slept a little extra and did miles (YAY) at the gym. 2 miles on the indoor track - no idea on the pace, but it was a negative split going by the ladies that passed me the first mile, then I caught and overtook the second mile. Spin class; 60 min - dang this was hard today! Seemed like we never got to rest! 3.1 (5K) with Becca on the indoor track. It was fun to have that third mile be my 'mystery' mile :) it's been a LONG time since I've run 'mystery' miles! Again no idea on pace...started slow, my legs were dead from body sculpting yesterday and spin class, but I think it was probably around a 9:10-9:20 AP. Furthest continuous run to date - YAY! Thanks for being so patient with your slow, prego running friend Bec!
drive home and all the while consider doing 2 more with some neighbors at home. They run about a 13mm pace, so I knew it would be slow. Finally friends, downhill, the road, good weather, and a little sun convinced me! PLUS - I finally got to use my garmin again for the first time since Christmas Eve! 2 miles on the road - 1st downhill, but with the ladies (so it was nice and slow) 2nd flat/up to home. Had to pick up the pace a bit...I needed to be home by 10 and they had left late. First mile was 10:37, then the second was 9:08. Felt good to get out today - hip feels fine, ITB feels fine and with new shoes and an amazing belly band (which really just squishes all my fat up out the top and makes me look horribly FAT!) I feel GREAT! Easing back into running has actually been a good thing, and taking breaks between sets seems to be doing my body well. I'm getting more and more confident about running the SLC 1/2 in about a month.

| | I'm honestly getting tired of not sleeping well *sigh* TM day - walked 10 min (.5 miles) at 8% grade @ 3 mph; ran 1 @ 9:05; walked .25 on 6% grade @ 3mph; ran 2 @ 9:05; walked .25 @ grade; ran 1 @ 9:05; walked .25 cool down. This felt rough today. Not sleeping well and still having sore quads made a rough warm-up this morning, but by the time I got to my 2 miles in the middle I felt better. Again, reminding me that it is always those first few miles that are the hardest! stretching and weights on the bosu to round out the 90 minutes. Volleyball tonight, so not much shoulders on weights...I'll be sore enough from serving and hitting!

| | So, let me start with last night. Volleyball was a disaster! Not only do I have to drive 30 miles (I'm only substituting this round), but hubby has to get home early and I miss my kids on family night; however, 2 new girls on the team had spring break this week and decided it wasn't their responsibility to tell anyone OR get substitutes so 4 of us got left high and dry. We were playing a team that was cocky as all get out and well - they think they're all that, but they really don't even play well! Ugghhh...anyway, on the first play (after an official forfeit and we're just playing for fun) I go up to take a block on an over-set and the setter comes under the net. Well, I land on her foot and twist my ankle. You know when you have so much pain it takes your breath away? Yeah...oh, and it's the same ankle I twisted last month as well! Anyway, I wasn't happy and was doing my best not to just sit and hyper-ventilate and cry! I'm telling you...it wasn't good. Luckily, one of the girls on the team works in a PT office and taped my ankle up so I could deal with it. I got to be the fat gimpy pregnant lady....SO fun! Anyway, we called it off for the second game and just left. My neighbor I play with, Amy, and I went to Chili's afterward to drown our sorrows/frustrations in chips and salsa. VERY therapeutic! So, needless to say - anytime I rolled over or the sheets pulled my foot last night I awoke in pain. Another restless night. Before getting out of bed, I wrote the alphabet with my ankle hoping it would move :) I could hardly walk on it, but was determined! I just needed to get it moving. The gym has body sculpting and I knew it wouldn't be a ton of work on the ankle so I went, but moving a bit really helped loosen up the ankle; however it was still pretty painful to walk on it. So, I went to the TM afterward hoping I could just walk 30 minutes on an uphill grade. After 10 minutes I thought I'd try just a couple minutes of running. Once it got moving it felt pretty good...lets go for 5 minutes....okay a full mile....hmmm, feeling good....lets do 2....TM is going to stop at 2.5 I'll stop then....stops at 2.6, let's just finish 3....feeling GREAT don't want to stop....okay one more....okay, okay, I'll stop. I seriously got going and just felt GREAT. It's the first time since I've gotten back that I just found my rhythm and felt like I could go and go and go. If it wasn't for already being 15 minutes over day care time I may have gone more! I'm pretty sure the trick was starting slow. My first mile was 9:50, then 9:40, the third I did the majority at 9:30, but bumped up the last .25 to 8:49 so I'm assuming it was a 9:20, feeling so good I took it up to 9:05 for the first 1/2 of the 4th mile, then went faster each tenth until ending at an 8:00mm. I still just felt GREAT! The ankle was painful, but worth it :) The rest of the body felt great and the pain subsided (or I just got really good at ignoring it). It is still tender and I'm icing it now, but I am on such a high about running 4 straight (except the stop/start at 2.6) I'm just happy!! After a run like today I KNOW I'll be good by April to run the SLC 1/2!! Hopefully, I'll feel as good, but not have a gimpy ankle :) Also, next week I'll be heading back to the BBK's (in the back of course!)!!

| | Ankle is MUCH better today. Still some swelling and tenderness, but when I woke up this morning I didn't have to think about before I walked on it - always a good sign. Boot camp this morning - I swear Heidi was out to kill us today!! We did 3 runs outside during class (only .2 each) - felt slow and tired. Hit the TM to finish up 4. My goal is to do 4 each day (broken up or not) then at least a consistent 6 on Saturday. Walked for 5 min to warm up, then I started at a 10mm, holy cow! I was running next to Kelli while she was pushing a 7:30 or something for her last 2-3 miles and I was breathing harder than she was. It was still slow and difficult, but I stuck with it. Then...I hit the stupid emergency stop - UUGGGHHHH! Well, after restarting and trying to figure out all the math, I got back at the 10mm and trudged through the first mile. Second mile I hit a 9:45mm, then the last mile I bumped it up one tenth mph every tenth of a mile. Ended up at an 8:40 mm for the AP (starting at 9:30mm). A total of 3.4 on the TM straight.
I definitely am a distance runner - those first few miles ALWAYS kick my butt and are hard, but give me a few and I finally fall into my rhythm. Can't wait to build back to mileage I like, slowly, but surely!

| | Pansy...I'm just a pansy. Was going to get up early and try an outside run - but it was too cold and I was too tired -at 10:30 PM when I set my alarm :) Yoga - I really love yoga, our teacher does mostly stretching, not party tricks. Good class today! TM - tired and ornery, hitting 4 was going to be a challenge so I took it easy 10 min walking 10% grade 3.0 mph (.5 miles) Run 1 mile @ 10mm - then a much needed potty break walk .1 mile @ 3 mph Run 1 mile @ 9:50
walk .2 miles @ 3mph Run 1 mile @ 9:31
walk .2 @ 3mph Run last mile (#4) at 9:22 for the first 1/2 then bumped it down each tenth 9:13, 9:05, 8:57, 8:49, then 8:30. I don't know what the AP was...probably 9:10 or so. Walk .5 to cool down Taking it easy was well worth paying $2 extra for more time in the nursery, my head just wasn't in it today. Ankle is still swollen and tender, but little/no pain with walking or running. Yesterday my neighbor saw my ankle and said "you should wrap that up or something, it's pretty ugly" and my hubby thought I had a golf ball in there. It's definitely not pretty, but I'm glad the pain is minimized AND the swelling so far today :)

| | Another blah, blah, blah morning. Kids not cooperating in the morning, running late, backpack stuff all over...I'm sure most of you know these kind of mornings. Got to the gym just hoping to keep moving for the 90 minutes, no Kelli - thought I'd missed her and she'd decided to brave the break in weather :( Started walking, again NO plan and I was willing to just walk! Then Kelli came in - YAY! Someone to whine to :) Thanks a TON Kelli for putting up with my whining craziness on the TM today - I really needed you today!! Walked 10 min (.5 miles) at 10% grade okay, I'll try running - 1 @ 10mm...hmmm, okay I'll do 2...next one @ 9:50...feeling pretty decent, one more....3rd mile @ 9:40mm....by the time I go to turn the speed down I'm at 3.54 miles (remember I walked the first 1/2, so I was only .04 over, but...), so I'll just finish the last one, 4th mile @ 9:31. When I finished my 4th mile I was actually finally feeling like I can run, so I bumped the speed down to 9:22mm and decided to get that 5th mystery mile over with. The last .35 miles I decided to just get it done and kept bumping the speed faster and faster to just be done! I ended at an 8:10 or so for the last .05 - I'm sure the AP was around a 9:10. Again, I was feeling good at the end of the run and am confident in tomorrow's 6 or 7- even all w/out stopping now! Plus it will be outside which always makes running easier - the morning and the cold will be my nemesis' tomorrow :) I finished off my last 20 minutes walking an 8% grade @ 3mph, I had a total of 1.5 miles uphill walking, 5 straight running at an AP of 9:30 - not too shabby. Still sad to think about how that used to be an easy day, but we're working back slowly - body first right now....body first! Oh, as a side note this is the first time I've run 5 miles since Christmas Eve, and hit more than 20 miles in a week since the first week of November. This week and today really are a turning point for me!!

I drug my pansy butt out of bed at 4:15 to get it all in before needing to be at the 5 mile water stop for Riverton 1/2 by 9:00 - honestly it wasn't too bad, because I wasn't sleeping well anyway. Me and all the stuff you'd need to survive in 20 below weather headed down to Lehi. The JRP is a bit scarier at 5:15 in the morning, in the dark, all alone.... 3.5 miles South then a turn around and head back, easy cheesy - okay maybe not as easy as I'd hoped, but not as hard as I had feared. I forgot about wind - dreaded wind! When I turned I ran into the head wind and uggghhh, but due to the curving trail it was just a cross-wind at times. @ 7 even I had a bit more to go so I finished up the run and rounded it out at 7.25. Splits: 9:26, 9:21, 9:28, 9:21, 9:31, 9:37, 9:37, 9:09 (for the .25) AP: 9:28. I figure it's nothing to brag about, but for my first cold, windy, outside 'long' run - I'll take it!! Drove to the Legacy Center for spin - got there the same time as Becca. Had about 20 min to kill before class, so I hit the track and finished up the last .75 mile to round out 8. Then did spin - it sure is a LOT harder after a 'long' run! I probably should've eaten something between as well. It was GREAT to volunteer at the Riverton 1/2! SO many fun running friends to cheer on and there were quite a few fast finishers for such a hilly course! I'm so excited to run SLC 1/2 now, I remember how great that 'racing high' is! CONGRATS to everyone who ran, it was a great day!!

| | BBK day today! It was hard, I'm not going to lie. This morning at my doctor's apt she described running pregnant as "running trying to push a jogging stroller with a 40 pound child, and a corset tied around your ribs". VERY accurate! It did feel good to get out and run with friends, chatting and enjoying the morning! We did a 1.5 mile warm-up, then 3 one mile loops (those wanting a workout did speed for .7 of it then recovered .3 - NOT me!), then the same 1.5 back to the parking lot.
AP: 9:30 splits: 9:20, 9:16, 9:28, 9:29, 9:28, 10:00 (this last mile had the horrible hill that I was dreading the whole way back to the lot!). Hit the gym for total body class - it was tough, but not as bad as it is sometimes! Finished off with 30 min on the elliptical @ L8. Hubby picked me up at the gym and we went to the docs. Only 1.5 pounds this last month - YAY! but it feels like 20 :) Happy hiccuping baby boy, still. Did the glucose test and not eating all morning then drinking that crud almost made me throw up after about 45 minutes - yuck! Doctor told me to keep on running! Just don't push to barf-zone, watch for joint injury/pain, over-heating and getting sunburns easily when I do run in the sun. Cleared medically for SLC 1/2 which is the best news :)

| | Woke up feeling like the world was against me...so I went back to bed! There would be no early running for me this morning.
Boot camp @ the gym. Wow, it was a beat down this morning - honestly it was what I needed to pull my head out and get moving for the day. Hit the TM quickly after wards to get my 2 miles in before having to be home to start work, but I was able to take it slow (I was already hot and tired!!) 9:50mm, 9:40mm. I'm glad Kelli was there to distract me, thanks Kelli - you are amazing!
