Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Anyone need an extra IT band? I've got one I'd like to donate and I don't want another one!!! I am so stinkin' sick of my stupid ITB I could scream!!! Okay, now that the whinning is over I'll start the report. Things started off great, I was keeping a good 8:20-8:30 pace, getting water and powerade and keeping fluids up, took gu at 8 and I felt FABULOUS!! I could see the 3:45 coming already - then just after passing a photographer after mile 10 I felt it...that stupid pain in the side of my knee...UURRGGGHHH! So, I stoped at the next water stop to tape with the kinesio tape I'd brought just in case and my stinky leg was so sweaty it wouldn't stick. Bagged it - rethought how I could tape it with the other one I'd saved for my right IT, stopped at the next fuel station and again couldn't get it to stick. Bewildered and taking every stride with pain I carried on... the hill came (this is the best part) hardly noticed it. At the top I saw a sign that said "like the hill?" and I thought "that was the hill?" so thanks BBKers! Palisades is finally rewarding me :) At 15 after the hill asked for tape and had them tape me. The guy did a great job and FAST! However, still pain :( now it was going up the leg instead of down - hmmm, lets tape ABOVE the knee! I had a lot of time to try and think about how to resolve this! So, after the dam and at the next stop asked for tape "oh which kind? What? Oh, Will this work? Why don't you sit down and I'll look at it?" ARRGGGHH!! Stupid lady just give me some dang tape and let me outta here!!! Got some stupid tape went once around the top of the knee and it helped a little, but to no avail. It was just a couple of miles later I stopped to walk for the 3rd or 4th time (walking even fast was FINE!) and I threw my head up and started to sob "what can I do?!?" I was so frustrated but wanted to finish and didn't want to have to walk the rest of the way. I bucked up, stretched and took off with the 'peg leg' run - this is where you don't bend your left leg and use only your right basically to run, BAD form!! However, it got me through. I would walk for 50 feet or so when needed, stretch when needed and then try to catch all those people who had passed me (ESPECIALLY the 1/2 marathon walkers - I do have my pride!!) Finally, we came out of the forest and I saw the spires of the temple - oohhh, I'm almost done!! I decided no matter the pain I wasn't stopping until the finish, well I walked ONE intersection. I finished, I did!! With excruciating pain from the last 16 miles of bad running and a left knee that wouldn't bend, I finished.

Thats about the good news. I guess with this being my first I did pretty respectably, but I'm really just bummed, because cardio and muscle wise I was FINE!! If it weren't for my ITB I could've run a few more after about 10 minutes rest. So, here is my resolve: FIX my IT, I now know that cortisone shots seem to work well, and run another marathon and show it who's boss!!! My Garmin unfortunately was set on auto stop so everytime my pace was under 16 mm it stopped. So, I don't think my last 15-16 splits are very correct, but the worst was 10:15. According to the toy I finished in 4:00:45, so its like 8 mintues off - and my mileage was 26.4 so that was off too. Guess I need to learn how to use those tangents too.

Thanks to everyone who helped me through this one!! I should feel good about it, it was definately a respectable time - I just know I had more in me - just not in the ITB :) Thanks to Lori for the fun party afterward and Carolyn and Marion for the good visit as well!! I finally know what 26.2 feels like and I'm not "the virgin" anymore :)

I think you did a great job. You really stuck with it. Just think what great shape you're in and what power you've got in you, even though you weren't able to take full advantage of it. You ran a very strong race.

And it was great meeting you. Your kids are adorable!

From leslie on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 21:40:11 from 76.23.61.78

Oh, I saw you too!!!! I am SO SORRY about your IT band, that stinks to have to happen on your first marathon! I think your time is awesome for your first, especially with all the first aid stops and the "peg leg" run!!! Way to stay tough young lady!!!!

Devine Miss M - your still devine in my book, guts of the marathoner, stick it out, get to the finish. From reading your report, very nice race pace, strong. Very good runs ahead for you. 1,000 commando points for the first marathon. It may sound corny, but, I am very proud of you.

Stay Kool, Enjoy the Journey, B of BS Rools out

Thanks all!! I am proud of myself for finishing, because more than once I considered walking through to the end or just stopping all together. I just feel a little cheated...thats all. Its hard when the mind is willing but the body is weak - just one part anyway! As I read your congrats I got a little choked up...I guess I really am proud of myself after all!

From Smooth on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 21:53:17 from 71.36.78.246

Hey Virgin-no-more! CONGRATULATIONS for accomplishing something not very many people could do! That's an AWESOME time for having ITBS at mile 10 on, stopping numerous times to have it taped. I am so proud of you. You toughed it out! You are officially a marathoner, and a dang good one. You owned it now! We must get that ITBS figure out and you will only get better, faster and stronger. Roll with the foam roller as soon you can. Ice and stretch. Hydrate and re-load so you can recover. Kudos to you! WAY TO GO!!! You should be proud! LOVE YOU!!!

From Amber on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 22:10:21 from 64.255.88.143

Congratulations - - - I think you deserve more congratulations than if you finished it faster w/ no pain, cause you STUCK THROUGH IT!!! That takes courage, grit, and guts, and you did it. Please, , , be dang proud of yourself :)

From maurine on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 22:13:47 from 97.117.66.96

Rachel - congratulations on the marathon finish and welcome to the marathoner club! Awesome job with an ITB injury. Heck - I gave up after 12 miles with mine and couldn't even walk without the shooting pain - so this is very impressive.

Now - get better and don't let this become a permanent injury.

From Kelli on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 23:02:38 from 71.219.69.233

You did great! Those IT;s are a pain in the butt, but you finished and you can get healed and move on to the next one where you will waste that time with a HUGE PR!

From britta on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 23:11:23 from 66.74.232.169

All considered 4:09 is AWESOME!! Even had you not had any pain 4:09 is a great time. Welcome to the Marathon Club!!!!

From maurine on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 23:13:26 from 97.117.66.96

I thought they were more a pain in the knee than the butt (LOL)

From bec on Sat, May 16, 2009 at 23:28:24 from 67.177.35.60

Who needs ITB anyway? I hate what happens to our bodies sometimes. In my heart you BQ'd, just so you know. Nice work out there today. What are we going to do about the IT? We can now bike together.

From Shelly9 on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 01:42:48 from 76.27.55.22

Awesome Job! Sorry to hear about the ITB. Running with the pain and still finishing in 4:09 is incredible. Get it under control and there will be no stopping you. Well Done!

From marion on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 08:08:36 from 71.219.59.13

Way to GO!!!! You are my hero in SO many ways, Rachel! Please know that your time was SMOKIN' fast and totally SUPER COOL! It was SO much fun to see y'all and have a great time at Lori's. Your family is TOO cute!!! I am going to copy your shirt idea for my marathon for me and my friend. We will be the Virgin twins ;)

From Nancy on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 09:13:48 from 76.27.11.127

Rachel I'm so sorry about your IT band. I still think you had a great race considering everything. Most people would have given up. Your time is still 20 minutes faster than my first marathon. I'm very proud of you for hanginng in there.

From Cheryl on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 14:18:19 from 76.27.66.153

Hey, that's the exact same time I ran in my first marathon, which was St. George, which I think is easier, so you did great! Get that IT band under control and you'll do awesome the next time around.

From jona on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 17:26:29 from 76.27.81.31

Now that is gutsy! IT problems, walking, and taping stops, and you still just about busted 4 hrs. Awesome! You have much to look forward to in the future. Keep a smile on, and know you did fantastic!

Oh, and its time to change that goal type! You are a marathon FINISHER!!!!

From Michelle N. on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 17:53:47 from 75.162.247.50

Yay! You have now run a marathon. Even if it wasn't what you were hoping for, still a great time and you have plenty of years to work on time. Way to go!

From RAD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 20:27:25 from 67.166.99.8

Thanks all!! I'm feeling good today and having little pain in the IT. Except when I go downstairs :)

I'm so ready to get this IT better for good and then tackle the marathon monster again!!! This is really addicting :)

From bec on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 20:36:35 from 67.177.35.60

RAD,

You're an addict too? One day after the marathon and you're at it again. TOU? I think that is where I will be this fall. (When the femur heals)

From RAD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 22:05:53 from 67.166.99.8

yes, its horrible to admit it- but I loved it. Well, looking back anyway. Even during the race I loved the run, just not the IT! I never even once thought - I don't want to do this again! I'm definately ready for another one!!

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 22:09:52 from 71.219.69.233

Well, there is another one in a few weeks.....KIDDING! Don;t you dare. Get better first. Maybe you should shoot for TOU?

From RAD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 22:19:21 from 67.166.99.8

Are you talking about UV? I'd laugh at myself if I tried!!! I've thought about it, but it depends on this stupid ITB!! I really want to do the 1/2 on memorial day though. However, I'm not making any decisions until I can run 3 miles without pain!! I'd do the 1/2 even if it was terribly slow.

From Kelli on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 22:21:03 from 71.219.69.233

No, TOU in September. That gives you time to heal properly and beat your IT into submission.

From RAD on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 01:33:05 from 67.166.99.8

I guess thats the issue with my ITB. I had it when I fist started running then did races for almost 8 months (one down emigration canyon!) with NO pain what so ever!! I totally thought it was completely gone until I felt it at Myrtle Beach. I guess I'm just afraid that I'll NEVER get rid of it! :(

From Julie on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 11:22:48 from 71.32.224.25

I'm so sorry about your ITB. We definitely should have run together. You should be so proud of yourself for toughing it out like you did. Great Job!!!

From RivertonPaul on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 11:28:42 from 67.42.27.114
