I was all set to have a relaxing evening when my wife reminded me that I have to attend the neighborhood street lighting committee meeting tonight. It should rock! I've broken an important barrier by becomming the first non-Mormon to sit on that powerful committee. Seems that my neighbor Shane, who rules the local ward and, thus, the neighborhood has always recruited members at church but it apparently occured to him this year that including the non-Mormon perspective on street lighting would be a positive step towards inclusion. Seriously, Shane is a super nice guy though and always willing to help everybody.

For those of you who live in states or cities that provide residential street lighting as a municipal service and at no extra cost to residents, you're lucky.

You're the Jackie Robinson of street lighting. Although I wonder if it's like in Congress when they say they have a bill with "bi-partisan" support... 200 republicans and 1 democrat (or vice versa).

You are on your way to bishop!

Where I lived in Eagle-Vail we barely had any street lights and you could see the stars at night. It was pretty nice. Vote for that.

What does the streetlight committee discuss? What brand and type of bulbs, the color of poles? I paid $3.68 for streetlights on my last monthly bill. Those are some expensive lights.

That is rather cheap especially if you consider what goes into the maintenance of the power grid. Just saying, coming from three generations of electric utility workers.

Steve always has to go and ruin a good discussion by putting logic into the thread!

We all have to pay $15.00/year. The money goes to bulbs, photo-whatever sensors, Christmas lights that wrap around the poles, and to repair damage when someone backs into one, plus the occasional installation of a new light which is about $1.200.

I asked Megan. We (which is to say she) don't pay for them, at least as a direct line item. Very few when I lived in Lafayette ("darker than a pocket"). And you still could barely see the stars. Stars are pretty good in Maine though.

The Christmas lights give the neighborhood a real Norman Rockwell look.
