Today I reluctantly ran the Draper Days 5k and surprisingly ran my best 5k in almost two years. 17:34 with nice, consistent splits and a decent kick. Went out fast but not reckless, never got passed, and passed several runners over the last mile. This is the first time I have run Draper Days - surprising because it's a mainstay on the USATF Circuit and always has one of the fastest fields around.

This is a big confidence boost for me going into Des News on Wednesday.

All hail the bower of the beet! I drank beet juice before the race after reading about its performance enhancing benefits for the past couple years. All that I am I owe to beet juice and hard training.

We've been eating beets a lot recently as well. That's the secret!

Good run today, that's a really solid time. You and Kramer are improving at the same rate. By November, you'll be down to 16:30!

Best 5K in two years is quite an accomplishment! You and Allie need to push each other in the marathon on Sat!

Nice running Rob. Good marathon prep!

Now everyone's going to want to drink beet juice before their races. Great job today. I kept telling myself if I could just stay with you that I would run a great time. Not quite there!

Nice race Rob. You have been performing well lately and you deserve a nice pay off.

Emily - Beet juice kinda sucks. But it's a miracle potion that will probably be banned soon :-)

It's easy to test for too as it turns your urine pink. No waiting around for your test results!

From Andrea on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 10:54:54 from 67.177.11.154

I read a whole article on beets and apparently that only happens in about 15 percent of the population. So you are one of the lucky ones!

From Josh E on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 10:56:41 from 75.169.31.22

The problem when your urine is pink after a race is you don't know whether it's beet juice or blood.

I'm leaving for the store right now. What isle is the beet juice on? Congrats on the 2 year PR.

Rob, good to see ya today. I was loving the backside the whole time. Orange and Blue. Good showing on the Alta side. Very nice time today...

Good race! I must say I've enjoyed watching the back and forth about Des News over the last week or so. The mind of a runner for sure!

Way to go. Beet juice is nasty stuff.

Nice race! The fastest 5K in two years is not too shabby. Thanks for your conversation after the race. It's really got me noodling on what to focus on next year. Happy trails, dude!
