Had a fair amount of success as a Masters runner for most of my 40s.

Have fun with running, explore more trails, stay healthy.

Keep running and racing consistently for as long as I can. Find what is sustainable for me over the long run.

I teach AP European History and other courses at Alta High School. I coached the track and cross country teams at Alta for 16 years.

I don't know if he is so anti-teacher as he is anti-bad-teacher and anti waste. His results in Ogden seem to be pretty good. He has cut some programs that I wouldn't have cut, but when you are working with public money sometimes you have to make some difficult cuts.

He's why I, a good teacher with a great record, will be teaching in another state next year.

His thuggish policies have driven MANY good teachers from the Ogden district into the Davis and Weber districts. So he's much more than anti-bad-teacher.

Actually, It's not just him, but the attitude he represents that is prevalent here in Utah among certain types. An attitude of general hostility towards public schools and public school teachers.

I would also say that if he really is only anti-bad-teacher he should really work on the perceptions created by his attitude. Every good teacher I know believes he is anti-teacher.

I would guess that 90% of the teachers in Utah have a negative opinion of this man. This will be a huge obstacle to him as he attempts to lead the education establishment in Utah.

You can't lead without the respect of the soldiers in the trenches.

I don't know this guy but it doesn't surprise me to another person appointed to a position of authority where he/she doesn't have the respect of the people he/she is supposed to lead. Are the people making these appointments completely clueless or do they really not care if he has the respect of the teachers? In the corporate world I live in they are clueless but even if they knew the person wasn't liked they wouldn't care.

I would assume that everyone in your company is supremely competent Fritz. Patrick Byrne is one of the chief school-haters in Utah. Unless they're charter or private of course.

It's unbelievably sad that education is in such a state that good teachers who love their jobs start looking elsewhere because of the lack of good faith and respect on the part of those calling the shots and dictating policy. Best wishes, Rob.

I am sure Patrick thinks they are "supremely competent" just as he thinks private and charter schools are better.

This "I know better" attitude from executives and administrators is exactly why good teachers like you and truly competent employees leave organizations.

I didn't realize the situation was so bad in Utah. I was under the impression that things were getting better. When I taught for 4 years in the 80s in the Salt Lake school district at Bryant Jr. and Horace Mann I thought things were improving. Much better than the days when my father taught and the teachers were paid less than the custodians. I only know about this guy from what I have read in the newspaper.

It would be too bad if Utah lost you as a teacher. You seem to really care about your students and their progress.
