Twelve miles in 1:33 on the Jordan River Parkway.

Abby and I were driving to Einstein Bagels this morning and she told me "I still want to be a veterinarian, but on my days off from being a veterinarian I want to have a mobile cupcake truck that drives around selling cupcakes. And in the time I have left over I'll still train for the Olympics in swimming".

I need to get me some big goals.

PM: Swam one mile at the gym. I'm going to count it as a mile of running.

I have a question. I was just scanning the Olympic 100 meter results, including the preliminary heats, and I was amazed at the number of guys running in the mid 11 seconds to 12 seconds range. A guy from New Zealand ran 11.72. Seriously? That's the best New Zealand can do? I teach at a high school that has 2500 students, 99 percent of them white, and we have plenty of guys that can run that.

Of course if you want to endure some real pain you can attend any high school track meet and watch heat 32 of the 100 and watch guys run 19 seconds. Our sprint coach used to like to send those guys over to me saying "they must be distance runners". As if I could take a 19 second 100 meter runner and turn him into a star in the 1600!

Yeah... I wanted easy access to water along the way. Thought I might go 15 or 16.

I like that Abby has big goals.

You should try to get Alberto to notice her and get her in the Oregon Project.

Ry and I saw that 11.72. We said, "Dang (well I think that is the word we said), that is only 3 1/2 seconds faster than our 9 year old runs 100 meters!!" (Oliver ran a 15.31 at the USATF Youth State Track meet this year. It wasn't his best but it gave him 3rd place. The one I have really meaning to talk to you about is Sophia, our 10 year old girl. She also took 3rd in state running a 6:39 in the 1500 meters with very little training. I think that is pretty good. What kind of speed would she need to get to in order to be competitive in high school at that distance?)
