Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Last night pain at 5 in bed.

Today felt ok, felt much better rotating in bed, only one stab of pain up to 5, the rest was lower levels of pain.

PT appt.  I thought to beg to get off crutches regardless of consequences.  He said to be patient, though and to stay on crutches and put more and more of my natural weight on both feet.  Sounds reasonable, and I did just that.

Felt better rotating in bed.  Still pain at times when rotating but not too bad.  (up to a 3 or 4 at most).

Sneezed in bed this morning and had a "nice" crunchy poppy feeling in my SI area, along w/ pain.  I don't mind pain in bed if I can just get off crutches.

I am excited about Saturday's marathon.  I plan on watching the first 3 hours of the race.  Should be fun!

Pain 2-3 during day, pain getting of and off the Walmart jazzy, about a 5 when getting out of bed and shifting during nap (naptime consisted of reading Gone With the Wind--haven't read it since high school, one part today totally cracked me up, I get to watch the movie when I finish it).  Lower level pain is a dull ache, high pain is some times scrape-y some times pinchy.

Got another MRI today, since my pain hasn't gotten better over the last 5 weeks of no activity and crutches.  The tech said the dr. analyzed the MRI as it was taken to make sure they got the images they needed.  So I asked to see the dr.  He showed me the images and we discussed them.

My stress reaction has gotten worse in the past 5 weeks.  Don't ask me why or how, I am not sure.  The joint is much brighter now.  He said maybe there is an infection, though there is not extra fluid in the joint.  He said more severe rest or a pin may be in order.  I left the clinic in tears and visited Lupita, who lives right there, then the imaging clinic called me back and said the dr. called dr. mclane, and they decided to test me for an infection.  I went back to that office, and got a SI tap, which involved enough pain I wasn't sure I could take it, two shots of local anestetic.  They had a hard time actually getting into the joint, which I guess is really a small gap.  It was lovely.  Then I went to Orem CH for a blood draw.  I see Dr. McLane tomorrow, and most if not all of the lab results will be available for our appt.  I am tired of it.  That's all I will say.

Appt w/ Dr. McLane.

She's perplexed, took alot of time with me, called the radiologist who read my mri during my appt to discuss.  It was shocking again to see my MRI images side by side, my more recent one has much bigger and brighter uptake on both sides of the joint.  My lab tests came back negative, except the SI tap culture won't come back until Monday.  We are going to use the surgeon as a second opinion of sorts.  The surgeons office gave me a July 27th appt a couple of weeks ago, with some pressure Dr. McLane got it moved to July 13th, but she also left a VM for the surgeon to try to get me in earlier and explain my case.  He has access to the MRI images.  I'll call Dr. McLane Monday for the culture results and to see if the surgeon called her back.  She said I "probably" could run again after surgury, but it depends on what the surgeon does, and it would require recovery time.  She said there's a slight chance my sacrum and ilium are fusing.  She sent in another lab test to test for that.

Oh, yeah, and I am now in a wheel chair.  I only have one and its in my home (I am sitting in it).  I guess I will be trying more extreme demobilization between now and when I meet with the surgeon.

I was able to watch the first 3 hours of the race.  I saw the leading men, Lisa, Marion, Maureen and Smooth just once, Mary Anne three times, and Josse 4.  I met Crockett, Rivertonpaul, and Amber during the race.  It was really fun.  It was the first marathon I have been a spectator for.  Props to Hyrum for a great second race.
