Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Got another MRI today, since my pain hasn't gotten better over the last 5 weeks of no activity and crutches.  The tech said the dr. analyzed the MRI as it was taken to make sure they got the images they needed.  So I asked to see the dr.  He showed me the images and we discussed them.

My stress reaction has gotten worse in the past 5 weeks.  Don't ask me why or how, I am not sure.  The joint is much brighter now.  He said maybe there is an infection, though there is not extra fluid in the joint.  He said more severe rest or a pin may be in order.  I left the clinic in tears and visited Lupita, who lives right there, then the imaging clinic called me back and said the dr. called dr. mclane, and they decided to test me for an infection.  I went back to that office, and got a SI tap, which involved enough pain I wasn't sure I could take it, two shots of local anestetic.  They had a hard time actually getting into the joint, which I guess is really a small gap.  It was lovely.  Then I went to Orem CH for a blood draw.  I see Dr. McLane tomorrow, and most if not all of the lab results will be available for our appt.  I am tired of it.  That's all I will say.

Oh gosh. That sounds awful. God bless you. I'm sure you've heard this enough...but hang in there.

Man alive Michelle. I am cringing right now just thinking about those needles and the pain. And thinking about your frustration makes my heart ache. You really have been put through the ringer. Man.

If by chance it is an infection, would antiobiotics clear everything up? I hate to get my hopes up, but that sure would be a relief to finally have some answers.

Were you all alone during and after these procedures?

What can I do for you?

Someone has to have some answers for you ... someone has to.

Michelle I can't believe how this has put you down. I feel so bad for you! This will only make you stronger and if you need anything please let Kellie or me know. I am always up for a fast, we would of course have to have a blog BBQ to break it! Keep smiling, and thanks for blogging everyday. It is still fun to read.

Oh I am so terribly sorry, Michelle! :( You're in my prayers. I know how frustrating injuries can be, but I cannot even imagine how painful yours has been. Stay strong. Keep the faith. You'll get through it. It will be so much better once you recover, I am sure!

Thank you everyone for your supportive comments. It is bewildering, but I am eagerly anticipating my appointment with Dr. McLane this afternoon and hopefully we'll come up with a plan.

Teena - I was alone, but after the MRI I went to my best friends house, had a good cry with her, then went back to do the tap and get the blood drawn. It was good to be alone. When I was talking with Paul after it all on the phone, he said, "Drive carefully and stay away from cliffs!" He was watching the kids.

As for a fast, I am not sure I am a worthy candidate. There are so many people with harder struggles than I have. My family on Paul's side did a fast for me this last Sunday. I do appreciate everyone's prayers and love. It's great to have this community, even when you aren't running.

Oh Michelle, that sounds miserable :(

There IS an end and you WILL get better. Just hang in there. Keep on keepin' on.

When I broke my wrist playing basketball I did not know it was broken right away. As the day went on it hurt worse and worse, so I went to Urgent Care. The guy at Urgent Care said he's glad I came in because even being a hairline fracture, if you don't immoblize it, put it in a cast, and give it a chance to heal, then it could cause an infection and poison your body. The rate at which a fracture heals in proportionate to the amount of blood flow in that area. So I'm sure antibiotics can clean up the infection, but there may be some time of taking it really easy to heal properly. Then you should be better than ever.

Michelle,

I am so sorry. I know this has affected your running life which is a totally bummer. I just hope it hasn't interferd to much with the rest of your life. Being on crutches I am sure it has. Call the RS Prez and get meals for the next month!!! LOL

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 15:05:33 from 64.81.245.109

Don't know if Fast Running Blog fast would be appropriate as we are not a church (although we do have some religious themes), but I am sure it is appropriate to ask a worthy priesthood holder for a blessing. To quote Mark 9:29, when Christ was asked why the disciples could not cast out the evil spirit, he responded "this kind can come forth by nothing but by prayer and fasting".

Also, Ether 12:6 "dispute not because ye see not because ye see not for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith".

To this I can only add that faith is a very tender matter, in fact very similar to running fitness at a high level in a lot of ways. It carries with it real tangible power that can create miracles. At the same time, it requires tender care to maintain in full force, things that appear of little consequence to the world do matter, so it is not possible to nourish the faith while mingling with the world, but maintaining faith in full force is worth every trial and sacrifice.

What did Dr. McLane say?

From kellies on Sat, Jun 13, 2009 at 00:47:24 from 66.119.143.249

Michelle,

I too am anxious to hear what the Dr. said. I am so sorry about all of this especially because you have been so diligent on your crutches and with your healing. I think a FRB party is just the ticket. What could lift your spirits more then friends and good food?? What do you think? What is your schedule like? Tyler and I will host.

From MichelleL on Sat, Jun 13, 2009 at 22:09:01 from 71.35.250.200

Hey Kellie, you know I love parties. That sounds wonderful. Any time should work really. Let me know when you are up for it. We could play, "Don't get your toes run over by Michelle's wheelchair."
